It’s so hard to say goodbye
W
hen I took on the LOOKatOKC editor position in 2009, my ideas seemed simple enough. Make it fun to read and create a relationship with the readers by being responsive to the community. To call itself LOOKatOKC, it had to truly look at Oklahoma City, and it had to look great while doing it. And through these past three years, the man who made LOOKatOKC evolve to its current visual standard is Matthew Clayton, the lead project designer. Clayton created all of the “architecture” in LOOKatOKC: designing the graphic tags, selecting effective fonts and building layouts that do justice to the stories within. He redesigned our logo last year and completely knocked us out with it — simple, direct and versatile. Because of his background in journalism, Clayton’s aesthetics always put communication at a premium — every design had to serve the publication, the story and most of all, the reader. A good way to chart the visual progress of this publication is to cull through copies of our annual swimsuit issue, a project that Clayton and our superb photographer, Chris Landsberger, BY GEORGE LANG have taken to new levels of excellence each year. LOOKATOKC EDITOR GLANG@OPUBCO.COM Clayton and Landsberger understood that this BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ issue could become something greater, and its STATICBLOG progression is something to behold. Not only is it reflective of the beautiful women we see every day in Oklahoma, but I think it can measure up to the work being done on national publications. Fittingly, this year’s swimsuit issue is also Clayton’s final one for LOOKatOKC, a chance for this great designer to do one last amazing issue before moving on to a new opportunity. I’m happy for him and I hate to see him go, but Clayton set a great standard for LOOKatOKC. In our next issue, I will introduce the designer who will take this thing forward, but I will always be grateful for the distance Matt Clayton traveled with us.

‘Blown Away’
‘Palisade’
Carrie Underwood (19 Recordings/Arista Nashville)
A
little bit of extra time makes a huge difference with Carrie Underwood’s fourth album, “Blown Away,” which mostly lives up to its bombastic title. The 14-track collection will follow the Checotah native’s last album, 2009’s platinum-seller “Play On,” by 30 months, stretching her previous every-two-years release schedule by just six months. The country music superstar clearly put those additional months to good use. Never has her progress as a singer, songwriter and artist been as striking as on “Blown Away.” Underwood, 29, already has another top 10 single to her name with the album’s rollicking first single and opening track “Good Girl.” Despite its bouncy hand-claps, full-on rock guitars and the five-time Grammy winner’s go-for-broke belting, the infectiously feisty pop cautionary tale might give fans pause, since it bears no small resemblance to her “Play On” launcher “Cowboy Casanova.” But “Blown Away” whips in a sharply different and unprecedently dark direction for Underwood with the title track, a vivid story song about an abused girl who leaves her drunken daddy to the swirling winds of fate during an Oklahoma twister. The singer sticks with the revenge theme and delivers another haunting vocal performance on “Two Black Cadillacs,” a spine-tickling tale about the wife and mistress of a supposedly good man meeting face to face for the first time at his funeral. The album sweeps Underwood back onto more familiar territory with “See You Again,” an uplifting pop ballad about reuniting with a lost loved one, and the sweet, down-home ode to first love “Do You Think About Me.” A bittersweet air drifts through “Good in Goodbye,” which she penned with frequent collaborator Hillary Lindsey and Grammy-winning Tulsa native Ryan Tedder, and the album catches a raucously fun vibe with the good-natured romp “Cupid’s Got a Shotgun,” which she wrote with Josh Kear and Chris Tompkins and turned into the latest surefire-hit collaboration with her superstar pal Brad Paisley, who contributes his trademark scorching electric guitar licks. For Underwood’s legions of faithful followers, the eclectic and ambitious “Blown Away” will prove worth the wait. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment writer

‘The Only Place’
Parker Millsap and Michael Rose
Best Coast
I
ethany Cosentino’s paeans to summer romance and California idealism on “Crazy For You,” Best Coast’s 2010 debut, were filtered through a lo-fi musical aesthetic that shrouded Cosentino’s bright-and-brief pop songs like fog rolling over the Santa Monica Pier. The fuzz-toned Phil Spector-isms on “Boyfriend” and “Summer Mood” had the charm of imaginary soundtracks for Super 8 surf footage but with “The Only Place,” Cosentino steps out of the haze, delivering a newly crisp sound that exposes the singer-songwriter’s shortcomings. “The Only Place” is produced by Jon Brion, who typically blankets his work with off-kilter lush orchestrations — Kanye West’s “Late Registration” bears the mark of his baroque sensibility. But Brion and Cosentino are having little of that, rendering the sweet title song and its soundalikes (“Why I Cry,” the second track, is nearly indistinguishable from its lead-in) with clear jangles that demystify Best Coast’s sound. There are few surprises, and Cosentino’s lyrics and chord changes rarely go in unexpected directions. “The Only Place” reflects the cover image of California getting a literal bear hug: with the title song, the state has one of the best endorsements for Pacific fun in the sun since the Beach Boys wore striped shirts. And yet with the exception of the haunting ballad “Dreaming My Life Away,” Cosentino and multi-instrumentalist Bobb Bruno do not display the adventurous spirit that took Brian Wilson from “Little Deuce Coupe” to “God Only Knows” in a few short years. “The Only Place” is amiable but surprisingly bland, a workmanlike collection that could use a few sonic vacations. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor
(self released)
If you give Parker Millsap and Michael Rose’s debut album a listen — and I highly recommend you give it more than one — you might just get the wrong idea. After all, they sure don’t sound like a couple of baby-faced recent Purcell High School graduates. With “Palisade,” the red dirt duo proves the adage that age is nothing but a number. The Oklahomans do it all on this acoustic album: Millsap wrote the 11 songs, plays guitar and harmonica and sings every track in a deep, gravelly and preternaturally knowing voice that you won’t soon forget. On bass, Rose not only gives each song a sturdy structure but also demonstrates an uncanny knack for knowing just when to nudge his rhythms toward the forefront. The musical partners have been playing together for about four years — you know, since they were high schoolers — and they’ve developed a solid chemistry. The album opens with the bluesy title track that emphasizes the duo’s remarkable musical maturity, particularly Millsap’s gritty vocals reminiscent of Tom Waits, then takes a more folksy tone with the pretty ballad “Seed.” The duo shows off their impressive skills with the lively yet old-fashioned instrumental “Tuesday Night Rag,” which has a timeless sound that could fool you into believing it’s been passed down from one picker to another since the early 20th century. In the grand red dirt tradition, the pair especially excels at vivid story songs like the mournful lover’s plea “Central Pacific,” the matter-of-fact musing on mortality “I Hope I Die” and the sad but cleverly worded tale of a trio of hard-luck cases “Jackson’s in a Hole.” — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment writer

Leaky ‘Battleship’ sinks on mind-numbing voyage
T
he United States of Hasbro breaks out the big FX guns in a noisy, clunky, vainglorious effort to transform its dated board game “Battleship” into a big, brassy summer blockbuster of the Michael Bay kind. Bay, who has managed to cobble the giant toy and game manufacturer’sTransformers action-figure line into a silly but serviceable summer sci-fi franchise, is not at the helm of this leaky vessel. That distinction goes to directorPeter Berg (“Friday Night Lights”), who steers the groaning accumulation of cliches, stereotypes, bombastic action and cardboard characters through a predictable, ear-thumping, mind-numbing voyage. Taking off from a ponderous screenplay by brothers Erich and Jon Hoeber(“Red”), the story centers on the USS John Paul Jones, a Navy battleship engaged in maneuvers with the Japanese off the coast of Hawaii. In an overlong setup we’re introduced to longhaired bad boy Alex Hopper (Taylor Kitsch, limping away from “John Carter”), who is steered straight by his

spit-and-polished military brother Stone (Alexander Skarsgard) and convinced to join the U.S. Navy. Leap ahead to the Pacific naval exercise, and Alex is now a slyly insubordinate officer on the USS John Paul Jones, still in trouble with the brass but indispensable when humongous alien spaceships show up and create a force field that traps the Jones and two other ships at sea. The extraterrestrials (gnarly, bearded beings whose crafts bear a suspicious resemblance to Transformers) decide whether to blow it to smithereens. But the Navy gets in the first shot and the battle is under way, with intrepid Lt. Alex Hopper taking on a yeoman’s share of the fighting. Naturally, he’s backed up by an only-in-Hollywood contingent of shipmates — supermodel Brooklyn Decker as a physical therapist; Hamish Linklater in comic relief as the communications geek; Liam Neeson in an eye-blink turn as the grumpy admiral; pop-star Rihanna doing a Michelle Rodriguez impression as a spitfire manning the big guns, and real-life war hero and double amputee
Col. Gregory D. Gatson in a gimmicky cameo. Despite the rather perfunctory presence of these humans, the real stars of the movie are the battleships and aliens and the virtual army of behindthe-scenes hardware wranglers, computer programmers, visual-effects specialists, special-effects techs and stuntmen (whose end-credits scroll numbers several hundred names and runs on and on and on). Berg deserves some credit for engineering the blustery, big-bang action sequences with verve and a certain visual artfulness. It’s as if he hopes the eye-dazzling fireworks and busy spectacle will distract us from the utterly inane story he’s telling. “Battleship’s” story is truly goofy and dumb. Anytime a character in an action movie utters a line like, “I’ve got a bad feeling about this,” you know you’re in for a barrage of cliches, trite conceits and tired old action-movie tropes. But, then, what more could we expect from a story inspired by a clash between board-game conventions and action-figure con— Dennis King, Staff Writer traptions?
