Nobody cares about seeing your food and pets. That’s what I remember hearing for the first time I heard people talking about Instagram. Since then, “the little photo app that could" has blossomed into a billion dollar idea, and my food and pets have been apart of the Internet for a couple of years now. Actually, I tend to focus my account on bands and friends but to each his own. You’re currently holding my favorite issue of LOOKatOKC to date. My co-worker Tiffany Gibson and the #MyOklahoma project were the inspiration for this Instagram themed issue. Gibson explains where the inspiration for the project came from in our exceptionally visual cover story. She’s spent a year curating #MyOklahoma and there’s plenty more to it than just food and pets.

I’m proud of Gibson’s work on the issue and for her efforts to discover different ways to LOOKatOKC. That’s essentially my mission every month. I want to show off what Oklahoma has to offer and highlight the evidence that surrounds us daily. Also, make sure to take note of Lacey Lett’s column this month. She’s working on a new direction for her column and focusing on creative projects throughout the metro. Good luck, Lacey. I can’t wait to see more. I think we are living in an exceptional city and there are countless adventurers using phones to document the results. Based on the response we received from this issue, I see no reason why we can’t do it again. So don’t forget to use that #MyOklahoma hashtag and share how you LOOKatOKC.

White rappers are owning the Billboard Hot 100
I
f you had to guess, who was the last black recording artist to hit No.1 on the Billboard Hot 100 with a legitimate rap song? And when? I posed this question to a dozen or so friends recently and got a wide range of responses, none of which was unassailably correct. The most common were Kanye West (who hasn’t hit No.1 since “Stronger” in 2007, though he was featured on Katy Perry’s “E.T.” which did five weeks at that position in 2011), Drake (“Best I Ever Had” hit No.2 in 2009), Kid Cudi (as if) and Nicki Minaj (like Drake, she’s gotten close a few times — “Super Bass” clawed its way to No.3 in 2011). One person recalled Wiz Khalifa’s “Black and Yellow” (which did one week at the No.1 position, in February 2011), and in truth, he had a pretty convincing argument for its claim to this modest throne. The correct answer is either that or “Whistle” by Flo Rida (two non-consecutive weeks in August/September 2012), depending on how low you set the bar as to what qualifies as rapping. Neither song is propelled along by anything I’d consider elemental to hip-hop; each dude’s delivery suggests as much character as a protagonist in a Michael Bay film, and the beats sound about as rigid and predictable as they come. Regardless, it’s been two years at best, and five years at worst (I’m referring to Jay Z’s last No.1

“Empire State of Mind”) since a black artist made it to number one on the strength of a legitimate rap song, which begs a sad question: Is the Billboard Hot 100 favoring hits by white rappers? I believe so, at least since after 2008. Flo Rida, T.I. and Lil’ Wayne all enjoyed substantial No.1’s that year (28 weeks on four songs, collectively) but from 2009 to current, black rappers totaled 16 weeks at the peak position. Comparatively, songs by Eminem, Macklemore and now Iggy Azalea have combined for 30 weeks at No.1. This dearth of No.1’s isn’t because of a lack of work or quality on the part of black artists, and I think it also reflects a more general decrease in interest for rap music as EDM replaces it as pop’s new engine. But it troubles me that Iggy Azalea, doing a Nicki Minaj-lite impression, can ride “Fancy” to a higher peak position than Nicki herself’s ever been. (Especially when it’s
Charli XCX on that ruthless chorus that actually makes the song.) Artists as hyper-aware as Nicki and Kanye realize this whitening too. Kanye responded by spectacularly dismantling all his pop acumen on “Yeezus” last year, boldly replacing recognizable samples and radio melodies with cold industrial beats and Tom Waits growling. Minaj, by the sound of her two latest singles, is running the opposite direction, leaning heavier on lush Autotuned choruses than her typically neck-snapping rap verses. Meanwhile, Lil’ Wayne’s followed Jay Z into the sports agency business and the Katy Perrys and Robin Thickes of the world are recruiting the lesser tier of rappers for verses on their own No.1’s. We’re a long, long way from Murphy Lee climbing on a No.1 in 2003, people.

OKC native Jeff Ragan started working on the healthy food concept in 2011 while he was employed at Chesapeake. After the business started to grow a year later, he quit his job to work on Kize Concepts full-time. “For our process everything is a handmade labor of love and joy. We mold and package [the products] by hand,” Ragan said. “We put ‘handmade with joy’ on our packages because it’s true. We do everything with lots of joy and love trying to fuel people’s best which is our slogan and mission. Just trying to change the world for the better,” Ragan said. It’s a tall order for a small business, but it seems to be working. Kize energy bars can be found in Whole Foods and dozens of local businesses in the state. Each of the Kize energy bars are made with four to six ingredients and come in cocoa, peanut butter, cinnamon raisin, pumpkin seed and vanilla almond flavors. They are made to be filling, healthy and convenient on-the-go snacks. Ragan’s passion for a healthful community spills into his personal life. “I like to be active, having nice meals and conversations of depth with friends, volunteering at Children’s Hospital, mentoring, reading, going to church, spending time with family and friends.” And he doesn’t have one favorite hangout spot. It’s more about the company. “My favorite places to hang out would be wherever great, high quality people are. It’s not what you do it’s who you’re with,” Ragan said.

DJ DODGER STADIUM, ‘FRIEND OF MINE’
F

orget the DJ name for a few seconds and focus on the fact that the duo of Jerome LOL and Samo Sound Boy has crafted an honest, dark and exhilarating ode to Los Angeles. Best defined as house music, “Friend of Mine” contains grand revelations that likely won’t be played at a Dodgers game anytime soon. House music isn’t as popular as the electronic dance music scene it gave birth to, but DJ Dodger Stadium reminds us that a great dance track doesn’t need a ridiculous drop. Intro track “The Bottom Is as Low as You Can Go” is a fairly deceptive title for an ambient intro, but it hints at the loneliness buried underneath the entire album. It feels like a slow emergence from the depths of the Pacific Ocean, then washing onto a beach with the sounds of a dance party in the distance. The rhythm emanating along the shore is lead single “Love Songs,” far and away the best song on the album. Skittering drum patterns trip over

themselves as a female vocal loop repeats and slowly falls into focus. The phrase “lately I’ve been singing love songs by myself” is looped like a mantra in place of verses or a chorus. Most of the songs on “Friend of Mine” follow this formula of repeated vocal samples floating above cascading synths and heart-pumping bass. Club dance music is often pegged as overly joyous, straightforward or sometimes shallow. The beauty of “Friend of Mine” is that it could easily be enjoyed sweating on a dance floor or underneath a blanket banging through headphones. The repetitive pulses and deliberate vocal samples are hypnotic and deserve contemplation as much as celebration. The real magic on this album is how DJ Dodger Stadium can take songs with defeated titles like “One Who Lost” or “Never Win” and transform them into optimistic ballads. That even in the darkness of Los Angeles, there is a friend by your side.

POWER PYRAMID, ‘POWER PYRAMID’
album review
W
hen a promising young band puts out two or more releases a year, some of the more diehard fans have the tendency to break out in a cold sweat. Their inner monologue begins the typical machine gun barrage of questions, such as, “Is the band going for quantity over quality?” or “Will this release even match the lofty expectation I have for them?” Thank goodness Oklahoma City has a band like Power Pyramid, because not only has it succeeded in making its eponymous release a strong and addicting listen — like its previous “Insomnia EP” and “Silence” — but also it has crafted something that beckons the listener deeper. “Power Pyramid” gives listeners a hazy ride through their own inner turmoil, demonstrating the beauty in sometimes letting yourself get lost. “Blue” is the kaleidoscopic tumble into “Power Pyramid” that gives every fan of rock his four-on-the-floor, a trick every band seems to use to suck in the casual listener for a cheap thrill. Here, the band uses it as a launching pad to send the song and the entire record into the stratosphere after a casual buildup, leading the way to a sonic ambush of guitar swirl and ethereal vocals that mix together in an eerily soothing concoction of a lead-off track. Guitarists Trey Millward, Kilyn Massey and Daniel Weaver continue to paint this loud picture on guitar, using colors of records past to create a color all their own. An interesting theme on the record is the use of interludes, namely in the songs “Alpha,” “Beta” and “Gamma,” that could be full-on songs of their own given the chance to really develop. “Manx,” the album’s centerpiece, is nothing less than beautiful. Weaver’s vocal lines, unlike so many of his peers, seem to be riddled with actual emotion through experience, which makes the song that much more enticing and appealing. “Power Pyramid” is full of moments that pull you in deeply. Whether they be the perfect combination of ambient destruction or that roll at the beginning of “Silence” that is, to be blunt, awesome, there is something here for even the casual listener to get attached to. In the age of junk we seem to be sifting through, it’s such a relief to have bands like Power Pyramid, with musicians who put their hearts and minds fully into what they create. Loud is beautiful.

MIKE HOSTY
Norman fixture Mike Hosty still going strong on the heels of a health scare
I
t isn’t hyperbole to call Mike Hosty legendary. If you are from Norman, and particularly if you went to college there, you’ve seen or heard about his Sunday night residency at The Deli. An amalgam of unusual technical skill and quirky humor, Hosty is one of few local artists to have created — and then perfected — his own niche.
Q: Welcome back to the grind after a break following your recent surgery. How are you feeling? Mike Hosty: It’s great to be back. I found out last summer that I had a problem and had one year to fix it — one year. I waited until January and had open heart surgery to replace my aortic valve with a Ross Procedure. The hospital staff and doctors were incredible. My sternum was in two for the operation, and I sat around in a recliner like an astronaut, so getting back into shape has been interesting. I have gone to cardiac rehab and am feeling way better. You don’t realize how bad you felt until you start feeling better.
Q: What was it like taking a planned, extended break, and how long were you off the stage? Hosty: After playing 250 shows for the last 20-plus years, when the train comes to a screeching halt, the feeling is strange. As I recovered, I knew it was time to rest, repair and recoup, as well as be thankful I made it through the operation. I was able to semi-plan for the break, but being self-employed, there is no safety net. You have to walk on the high wire yourself. I was off the stage from January to April 1, when I played for the first time again. The doctors gave me a weight restriction. I couldn’t lift more than 10 to 15 pounds, so I had to wait until I could carry some of my gear. Q: You play lots of shows out of town but probably have the most secure residency of anybody I’ve seen, with your Sunday nights at The Deli. Why is it so important to come home that often?
Page 12
July 30 - August 12, 2014
Hosty: The paradox is: Everybody loves the road, but being on the road, everybody can’t wait to get back home. I have driven back from Colorado and California, flown from Denver and driven from Memphis all night to get back to Norman for Sunday night, because that means I am also coming home to my wife, Kellie, and son Liam — and my three-legged dog Sammie. Sunday means family, and that’s what the night’s about, too. There is also a “Sunday Theme” you can find on my Twitter (@mikehosty). Q. Rather than always find a person to fill a specific musical void as your lineup changed, why did you go the route of playing (or making) instruments in unconventional ways in order to play “with yourself?” Hosty: Back in 1993, I played a place called Liberty Drug on a Thursday “free beer” night. The place was packed with people hoping to get at least one cup from the one keg. My bass player and drummer got in a disagreement over a business transaction and walked off the stage. I told the owner what happened, and he said, “You better think of something quick.” I grabbed the drums and my guitar, moved the microphone and played the rest of the night. Everybody danced, the owner was happy, and it was the first time I “played with myself” in front of people. My style developed from necessity. I came up with playing one-chord songs because it was easier to tell the guys you are playing with, “This one is in G,” than to conduct through the song while trying to keep the audience too. The freedom of the song gave the musicians leeway to do whatever they wanted, because how could you go wrong? That later developed into how I sound and has become even more useful “playing with myself,” which (thanks to an appearance on the “Headlines” segment of “The Tonight Show”) is my tagline.

styles and spontaneity mixed with knowledge of classical techniques, what’s your philosophy for teaching beginners how to play? Hosty: My philosophy is “Mel Bay or the highway.” The Mel Bay Grade 1 blue book is the book that Joe Bob Nelson
taught me out of, and I use it today. If a child learns to read music early, they will never forget it, and they’ll be able to return to it easier than an adult. Teaching beginners is my favorite because the endless possibilities in the mind of a beginner remind you all the roads have not been traveled, and there is much work to be done. — Becky Carman, entertainment writer

‘Lucy’ armed with action thrills and feverish pace

uc Besson creates a potent hybrid between his kaleidoscopically kooky science fiction and his adrenaline-gushing action films with “Lucy.” The French writer-director’s latest cinematic mind-job mashes up the rainbow hues and superwoman savior concept from his ridiculously entertaining “The Fifth Element” and the blood-pumping car chases and shoot-ups from his crazily stylish “Transporter,” then adds hefty doses of “The Matrix”-style high-concept sci-fi musings. “Lucy” is based on that old chestnut that people only use 10 percent of their brain capacity, a notion that modern science has debunked. Since Besson veritably embodies the phrase “style over substance” — and it is a movie, after all — the auteur nevertheless takes the concept and runs with it. Wisely, he keeps “Lucy” a sprint, a breathless 90-minute dash that thoroughly entertains and then ends before the ludicrousness of it all can knock moviegoers off track. After playing a supporting role in the Marvel cinematic universe, Scarlett Johansson proves she

has the chops to carry an action movie as Lucy, an American student living in Taipei, Taiwan, who has gone a bit wild. That includes a sketchy boyfriend (Pilou Asbæk) who bullies her into delivering a package to a businessman’s luxury high-rise. Of course, Mr. Jang (Min-sik Choi) is actually a gangster — and a rather bloodthirsty one, at that — rather than a businessman, and he turns Lucy into a mule for a new drug. But when his sadistic lackeys accidentally break open the pouch in her abdomen, her body is flooded with powerful blue crystals that unlock previously untapped quadrants of her brain. As she is able to access increasingly high percentages of her brain’s capacity, she can control every aspect of her body’s function, then control other people’s bodies and finally all matter and energy around her, rapidly evolving into a super being. Desperate to understand what’s happening to her, Lucy tracks down Professor Norman (Morgan Freeman), a respected researcher who is in Paris giving a lecture on his theories about the untapped potential of the human brain.
It quickly becomes apparent that Lucy is changing into something not human, and one of the movie’s most riveting scenes comes when she holds a surgeon at gunpoint and forces him to remove the busted bag of drugs from her tummy. No longer able to feel pain, she tearfully calls her mom to say that she loves her — and can remember petting the cat the family owned when Lucy was just a baby. As she races to Paris to meet Professor Norman, Lucy is pursued by Mr. Jang and his thugs and crosses paths with an able and honest French cop (Amr Waked), who becomes her astonished sidekick. Under all the candy-colored spectacle and doubledigit body counts, Besson possesses a great gift for fully using his assets on any given project, and he employs Johansson’s expressiveness, Freeman’s gravitas, Choi’s menace, Thierry Arbogast’s eyepopping visuals and Eric Serra’s throbbing score to maximum effect. Although the ride can’t last, Besson deserves props for making it a fun one. — Brandy McDonnell, entertainment writer

oo much artistic freedom can be a perilous thing. For “Wish I Was Here,” Zach Braff’s long-awaited follow-up to his 2004 indie hit “Garden State,” the amiable actor, director and co-writer (with brother Adam Braff) launched a crowd-sourcing campaign to finance part of his $5.5 million budget. The unorthodox arrangement, Braff insisted, allowed him to avoid studio meddling and to retain full artistic control over his highly personal project. It also enabled Braff to produce a film that, while touching and appealingly quirky, would have benefited from a little judicious editing. It’s a highly ambitious story, filled with big spiritual questions, complex family dynamics and offbeat flights of fancy, that clearly bears Braff’s nerdy, emotionally vulnerable auteur stamp. At best, it’s a suitable continuum of “Garden State’s”

generational groping for life’s true meaning. “Wish I Was Here” features Braff as Aidan, a Los Angeles actor and family man whose last paying gig was a while back in a dandruff commercial. His long-suffering wife, Sarah (Kate Hudson, in her best role since “Almost Famous”), holds down a dead-end clerical job to keep the family financially afloat, but her patience with Aidan’s thespian dream is wearing thin. Meanwhile, their precocious children, Grace (Joey King) and Tucker (Pierce Gagnon), must drop out of Hebrew school because Aidan’s father, Gabe (Mandy Patinkin, exuding fierce life force), can no longer cover their tuition since he’s learned of the return of his once-remissive cancer. Aidan is forced to step back from his airy selfinvolvement and homeschool his kids — leading to misty moments of parental bonding, religious
questioning and off-track educational excursions (involving Day-glo wigs, wild demo rides in flashy sport cars, doddering rabbis crashing their Segways into walls and so on). There are touching sequences concerning the family coming to grips with Gabe’s imminent passing and his failings as a father. There’s a nice dynamic between Aidan and his ne’er-do-well brother, Noah (Josh Gad), a techno-geek estranged from the judgmental Gabe. But those moments are often cut short by cutesy subplots and silly asides. Among the roundabout plot lines and erratic tone shifts are just enough moments of emotional honesty and deft psychological insight to make you wish “Wish I Was Here” were informed more by keen editorial restraint and less by unbridled artistic freedom. — Dennis King, entertainment writer

ach Braff is admittedly weary of defending his decision to partially finance his sophomore movie venture, “Wish I Was Here,” the offbeat, highly personal follow-up to his 2004 indie hit “Garden State,” through Kickstarter. But with the finished film now working its way out to the nation’s theaters, all the sniping and Internet criticism Braff endured for hitting up fans for $3.1 million in small donations to help finance his $5.5 million film have come rushing back. During press interviews hosted by Focus Features at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel, that was a topic the affable Braff inevitably faced. “There was just an incredible amount of Internet insanity,” Braff said. “Everyone and their mother weighed in, and there was a lot of misinformation. Such as, ‘Hey, you’re

a rich Hollywood actor. You have money. Go make it yourself.’ Well, I do have money, but I don’t have $5.5 million to spend on a movie.” Some vocal critics argued that Braff had the clout to get studio backing, and that crowd-sourcing programs such as Kickstarter should be reserved for starving artists with no other resources for finding financing. Braff says that despite his bankable status as an actor (based largely on his long-running “Scrubs” TV series) and the following created by the success of “Garden State,” he still found himself at the mercy of studio bean counters when he pitched his idea for a quirky film about a struggling Los Angeles actor at a crossroads in his career and family life. “I simply could not get the money without a lot of strings attached,” he said. “Maybe I could have if I’d been ready with this right after ‘Garden

State,’ because I was so hot right then. But that hotness fades pretty quickly, six months or so.” Studios were receptive to his pitches, he said, but with stifling caveats. “Hire certain big-name actors, whether they’re right for the parts or not. Shoot in Vancouver for the financial incentives. Give up the final cut. Those were the deals we were presented with, and I just wasn’t going to make all those concessions.” To Braff’s mind, the system is rigged to produce generic, star-driven movies rather than foster risky, eccentric, personal films. “The same thing happened with ‘Garden State.’ Everyone passed on ‘Garden State.’When I write these movies, I try to make them unique, but that’s not really something that the money guys and studio heads are looking for.” Braff was shooting to raise $2 mil-
lion of the budget from the Kickstarter campaign but reached that goal in a matter of days. Eventually, contributions of more than 20,000 investors reached $3.1 million. Braff said he believes his use of Kickstarter has had benefits beyond his own movie. “We drew a lot of new visitors to the (Kickstarter) site, who helped fund other projects.” Through the hubbub, he said he hopes a clear message comes through. “Audiences should know that there’s a reason they’re not seeing more movies ... that have a personal touch and that tell unique stories about people’s lives,” Braff said. “These small personal films, where a director wants to retain final cut and tell his or her own story without a bunch of interference, no one will say yes to that without a lot of strings attached.” — Dennis King, entertainment writer

yOklahoma started as a way to showcase why we all live in and love this state by featuring user-sub- mitted photos in The Oklahoman. In the aftermath of the 2013 deadly storms, we wanted to get more involved with the community and highlight all of the wonderful things Oklahoma has to offer. That’s when we decided to launch a hashtag that would have an impact far greater than just on social media. #MyOklahoma was a tie that could bring us all together and remind us why we love this land. It reminded us of good times spent with loved ones and opened the gate for new opportunities with others. It showcased the state for its beauty and not destruction. Since then, support for the tag has

grown beyond our expectations; a community has formed around it. If you scroll through the pictures, it’s not uncommon to see people talking about the back story of photos, complimenting each other on techniques and even planning gatherings to explore more of the state. And as we approach the one-year mark, we now have more than 19,000 submissions that vary from little league games, to fishing trips, snapshots of sunsets, adventures with friends and pet photography. Every day, we select one of these to run in The Oklahoman, and we also feature another one on our @News_ OK Instagram account. Our goal is to keep the hashtag going as long as the community wants it to exist. We’ve enjoyed running the photos in the paper for the past year and hope to continue to do so for the foreseeable future.

BRANDON PUFFER (@bpuffer360), 34 The pic was taken at our local Skate shop, Core Extreme Sports. We support local businesses. The car was parked in front, and to me it represents going back in time when skateboarders used to ride with passion. They still do, but the folks up there at Core Extreme have that “love” mentality. They encourage kids and people period to do what they love.

KENNY PORTER (@bigkat._), 25 The day I took this photo my best friend and I had planned to go to the tallgrass prairie; granted we ended up there but I didn’t realize how awesome the journey to there would be. Osage County has some amazing views and is just awesome to just get lost in. We had a great time just taking in the scenery and capturing Oklahoma.
BRIAN LAWES (@brianlawes), 24 I believe life needs adventure to keep our eyes open to how incredible the world around us is, so I began joining friends at work on their Thursday photo adventures around OKC. This particular photo adventure we were exploring and jumping off hay bales near Jones, OK. It shows off one of my favorite things about Oklahoma — that in just a span of a few miles you can go from an awesome downtown to a wide open space of country.
JEREMY DUNKLE (@JeremyDunkle), 31 On this day we were actually heading to our annual family vacation over on Lake Taneycomo in Branson to do some trout fishing. This picture says a lot about Oklahoma to me. The most striking part being that you can almost feel and smell home through it with the haybales, watercolor sunset, bird dog, and summer breeze. The only thing missing is an oil well.
TAMARA FEATHERSTON (@fullhouse4), 43 This was just a random Saturday when my daughter and I went exploring (like we do a lot on weekends). We love nature and sunsets and often hop in the car spontaneously when we see there may be a particularly beautiful sunset about to happen. To me, this photo speaks to the strength and determination of Oklahomans. Horses are such beautiful animals that are able to project both strength and vulnerability and then the landscape here in Oklahoma is so serene. When I look at this photo it just reminds me that “the land we belong to is grand.” It really is.

DANIEL MUDLIAR (@danielmudliar), 18 The day I took this photo one of my friends and I were on our way to explore some new parts of OKC and we were involved in a car accident. After the crash his car wasn’t drivable because the bumper had bent and was touching the wheel. Using a chain we bought we were able to fix it ourselves and get back to what we had planned. Around early evening we found a pretty cool section of railroad tracks and climbed onto the train where I took this photo. I was beginning to be discouraged that I had seen pretty much everything OKC had to offer, but I learned I needed to be more creative and this photo encouraged me that there were so many more photo opportunities here in Oklahoma then I realized.
KOON VEGA (@Koonvega), 39 That morning, my son, Attitan (pronounced Ad-di-Ton) was running around in our living room with the cat toy on him. The bells were making noises along with his rapid foot steps on our 110-year old wood floor. It was loud, it was crazy, but the best part of it was his laughter that makes it all even more beautiful. It says everything about my Oklahoma. It’s my life. My son was born here, my wife was born and grew up here. I’m from Bangkok, half a world away from here, but I call Oklahoma home.

ERIN MERRY (@3.rin), 15 This photo was taken in March. My sister and I were going to Cain’s Ballroom to see her friend’s alternative band called La Lune. When we walked in they were having a country band playing and everyone was square dancing. From what I remember, it was a private concert for some club or organization. We were disappointed to find out that he wasn’t playing there at all, he was actually all the way across town. I thought that I might as well try to get a good photo of their famous sign out of it.
LISA LEE (@LittleGhostLuLu), 29 An out-of-town friend was visiting Oklahoma City for the first time all the way from Mississippi. I wanted her to see the best our city has to offer so we started with brunch in Midtown and ended with a visit to our fabulous art museum. #The rooftop of the museum was also a great place to take in a view of the cities skyline. This image represents to me a vivacious city “where the wind comes sweeping down the plain.” Our city is a great place to live.

So what does fall have in store, fashionwise? Let’s start with the new stuff. The ’60s is huge, with shiny black go-go boots rising just above the knee, straight mini skirts and black and white motifs. Normcore is a newish movement in fashion that will take hold this fall. From beauty blog The Cut, “In fashion ... (normcore) manifests itself in ardently ordinary clothes. Mall clothes. Blank clothes. The kind of dad-brand non-style you might have once associated with Jerry Seinfeld, but transposed on a Cooper Union student with William Gibson glasses.” Perhaps aimed at the normcorers, colors for fall are decidedly bland, with dark green being the go-to neutral. Black, gray, white and browns will rule, with pops of color coming from bright, big handbags. Bright colors, however, such as orange, purple and pink, are also popular. Not neon, just bright. Trousers will be thankfully full, in blatant opposition to the last few years’ skin-tight skinny jeans. Graphic prints, also called Rave or New World prints, are another fun trend. Sneakers are crazy hot, and practically all the designers are adding them to their collection.

WHAT YOU’VE GOT Now for the stuff you already have in your closet. Leopard (sigh) is a favorite animal print for fall, though it seems it needs a year or two off. Those nude strappy sandals? They’ll hold over until the weather renders them impractical. Booties are still a versatile shoe style to be worn with skirts, shorts or trousers. Freshen them up with a pair of lady-like ankle socks. And menswear-inspired shoes, such as lace-up oxfords, are huge, as they made their debut last fall. Long, oversized sweaters will be just as cozy and on trend this fall and winter as they were last.

LANE TIFFEE (@suprtucksmama), 34 The day I took this, was a wild one. And in our home full of family and our dogs that’s nothing unusual. But Ruby sat quietly. So stoic watching the world go by her. It truly made me take a breath. And stand still. I think being a proud Oklahoman is completely enveloping your world with family. Blood relative or not. It’s that bond that pulls us together. Brings us home. Created families from friends. And makes us proud Oklahomans.
SARAH HASTINGS (@dear.sarah), 18 Here is the picture. I took it July 12th at one of the ”Make Guthrie Weird” block parties that they have once a month during the summer on 2nd street and Harrison - Downtown Guthrie. They have live music, dancing, and food vendors. It’s a genius idea if you ask me! Lots of fun for the whole family! I think it shows how warm and friendly people in Oklahoma truly are and how we live such a fun and simple life.
TONY HARMS (@twharms), 55 The shot was taken at the Worldwide Instameet in Martin Nature Park on May 17, 2014 It says what an awesome state we live in. Such a great community that people of all ages, backgrounds and walks of life can come together and enjoy what our state has to offer. When and where at the Boathouse District? I’m game for that, but had not heard about it.
KRISTA GATZ (@kriskilla), 24 My 3-year-old was watching it rain all morning out the front door and when it finally stopped we put on some rain boots and jumped in the puddles. To me, this picture shows how quickly the Oklahoma weather can change. We went from being cooped up all morning to spending the rest of the day playing outside and making memories. I love my Oklahoma.

BRITTON WILSON (@Wapakalypse), 20 The day I took that photo, my close childhood friend, Jacob (pictured), and myself decided to go on a mini day trip to Lake Arcadia just east of Edmond. I was just days away from moving to Edmond so it sparked me to do something adventurous around the city I was about to be living in for school.
KAYSIE BISHOP (@kaysiebishop), 39 The fisherman in the photo is my husband Marty Bishop. We love to go fishing whenever we have any free time. He loves the sport, I just love being in nature and trying to capture its beauty in pictures. In my opinion, that is the beauty of Oklahoma, being able to slip away from the real world and lose myself in the natural, peaceful beauty of this great state.
BO APITZ (@le_ciudad), 27 It was almost a year ago and the night was perfect biking weather. Downtown OKC in the evening always has little to no cars and gives you the opportunity to explore the area freely. The presence of the Devon Tower in downtown definitely has OKC looking into the future and simply, that is what the subject is doing in the foreground, looking into the future of not only this city, but the state as well.
JONATHON BOWIE (@eiwob41), 32 To kick off the summer, I took this photo during a writing session sitting alone on my back porch after midnight. I have always had an unwavering passion for writing, playing guitar, and singing my own lyrics and music. My wife, Emily, bought me this Taylor acoustic/electric for my birthday while I was overseas on my most recent deployment. I didn’t get to play it until the tour was over. This was a remarkable gesture in the way that I think she wanted to let me know that she never wants me to give up on my dreams. I love her like crazy. Oklahoma is where I call home. Every time I leave, I can’t wait to come back. No matter how far out I travel, even if to the moon, I’ll never find a place such as here to get a better vibe. This state has been and always will be my natural catalyst for creativity.

KALEB NIMZ (@brewedtogether), 29 The day the photo was taken was on the 4th of July. We went exploring through the country to find the perfect fireworks stand to buy fireworks for that evening. On the way back, the sun was setting. We came across this beautiful field near Kingfisher and had to stop and take a photo. To us this photo represents the wide and serene open spaces that cover most of Oklahoma. We feel blessed to live in a place where we have freedom every day and where a road trip 15 minutes down the road will take you to some of the most beautiful country in the world.
