Entertainment writer Becky Carman wrote this issue’s cover story and did an admirable job of putting Morgan’s idea into perspective. It’s exciting to see a creative idea from start to finish. I applaud Carman’s story and Morgan for not giving up on this idea. He’s preparing his fourth issue, and I’ll definitely be on the lookout because one great idea deserves another.

YouTube’s trying to be more like Spotify
U
sually I spend this space promoting musicians I like or comparing specific acts, genres or records with the intent of isolating what really makes a certain song or musician or style stand out. The music news of the day never really gets into the routine, but today’s could be a gamechanger for the whole modern music industry, and I just couldn’t ignore it. Last month it became widely reported that independent artists’ videos could soon disappear from YouTube, when the Google-owned video site confirmed that it would drop videos posted by record labels that don’t sign licensing deals with the music streaming service it intends to launch later this year. In short, it looks like
the days of seeing Vampire Weekend videos on YouTube next to Coldplay’s, could soon be over. This development isn’t an absolute line in the sand for online music distribution. There are boutique labels that’ll probably comply with YouTube’s decree (though details of the licensing agreement haven’t surfaced, the mid-size labels claim they’re not as favorable as the deal offered to majors) and other video hosting services like Vimeo exist as alternatives for those that don’t, but it’s enough to directly challenge the prevailing narrative of music distribution in the internet age — that anybody with a laptop can build an audience — even if that narrative was mostly bunk anyway. But it puts smalltime artists in a serious bind: How are they to de-

velop enough of a following to sustain their business if they or their label can’t afford to distribute their music through a highly socialized network? Recall that Billboard factors YouTube videos into its Hot 100 chart now — this move by Google would strengthen the barrier for independent acts to break into the mainstream. Not all aspire to that of course, but few would turn down the attention that comes with increased radio play. Furthermore, YouTube is the most common medium by which the coveted 12-24 demographic keeps up with music nowadays, according to a study conducted by Edison Research. Setting up a paywall would surely disrupt this behavior though, as I’m sure most of those kids use YouTube specifically because it doesn’t cost anything. So what’s a good listener to do? How can you and I, with our buying and listening habits, help make sure that everybody gets their fair slice of pie as music subscriptions services hijack the vogue? When it comes to music I think responsible consumerism looks something like this: Buy records as directly from the artist as possible. Best way to do this is to go to a show and buy an album straight off the merch table. You might
even get to meet somebody in the band. Sure it might inconvenience you to wait, say, a couple months before your favorite musician comes to town, but you know what’s convenient? McDonald’s. And those hamburgers barely qualify as food. Stop buying digital. I have no idea how much a band takes when you buy its record in MP3 for $6.99 on Amazon, but I can’t imagine it being as valuable to them as the purchase of a physical, longer-lasting thing like an LP or even a CD. And it’s not a good long-term proposition for you, either. LPs might cost more now, but they last longer and, y’know, actually carry resale value. (Imagine trying to sell an MP3 download to a pawn shop or record store.) Nowadays most new records come with MP3 downloads too, so wanting to listen on your phone or iPod’s not an excuse. Frankly, the middleman and technology manufacturer are the only parties that benefit from the purchase of an MP3.
earned a couple of cents out of the deal) but also to me because I couldn’t rightfully call “Kaputt” my own without possessing a physical copy of it. So I bought it and vowed from then on not to lean too heavily on streaming services.
Don’t let subscription services supplant buying records. I like Spotify. I pay $9.99 a month for the premium service. But one day I realized that I’d used Spotify to stream Destroyer’s “Kaputt” half a dozen times and that that was unfair to Destroyer (who maybe
Ask other people what music they like. A wordof-mouth endorsement from an actual human being, even if he or she might be a total stranger, is worth roughly eight gazillion times more than an online ad or prompting calculated by some algorithm that is usually com-
ically off-base. (“Like The Replacements? Try listening to Guns ‘N’ Roses”) And the thing about asking people for suggestions is that they’ll usually offer you the opportunity to reciprocate so if you’re like me and really like Los Campesinos! and constantly fear they’ll never make another record because hardly anybody else likes Los Campesinos!, take the chance to tell another human being about how awesome Los Campesinos is. And who knows? Maybe you’ll find a new record or musician you like a ton but totally missed out on. Sharing!

I would like to continue to foster this concept in The Project Box by creating a medley of art projects the community can join in on at a level that is comfortable for the participant,” said Allswede. Their most recent show featured artwork by AK Westerman in an exhibition titled, “Organik.” Her work has often been described to her as, “organic, imaginative, intricate and vibrant” by viewers and followers. “Mankind continually strives for evolution, both in process and in innovation. We search out that which inspires us. We dream, create, destroy, and dream again. Our successes and our failures weave a complex and unique tapestry that defines our struggle for advancement. Yet even as we grasp for elusive perfection, our efforts often see the destruction of the natural elements around us. Nature and man in constant battle, man and technology, life and death, locked in an endless war, bloody yet beautiful. Every cycle cleansing and bringing life anew. Organik is an exploration of that process, and a subject I find endlessly fascinating,” said Westerman.
“ I returned from a three week cross country trip earlier this year armed with dozens of nature photos, an idea for a new series, and a determination to create work that was more engaging, detailed and imaginative than anything I had done before. The Forgotten was an attempt to take a giant leap forward with my work, and the reaction has been incredible and inspiring to me as I continue to grow in my craft.” - AK Westerman

TOM KRELL, ‘HOW TO DRESS WELL’
T
om Krell has discovered the perfect balance, and on his third album under the How to Dress Well moniker, he puts his voice front and center while dressing it with various percussive effects. Whether it’s the sounds of hail hitting rooftops at the end of “What You Wanted,” drums sounding like footsteps crunching through packed snow on “Repeat Pleasure” or even the default hold music for a popular phone company on “Precious Love,” Krell’s voice soars above them all. Howling into the void he calls the future, Krell questions when it’s necessary to make big life changes. On “What Is This Heart?,” those questions are commonly about love — the kind of love that makes hearts beat and break. Krell has tackled love and loss before, but never with this much clarity. His debut “Love Remains” helped reintroduce R&B to indie kids, even with its low-quality production and Krell’s vocals hiding in the mix. It showed more promise than perfection, which was proven an album later on “Total Loss,” with his vocals snapping into focus.

July 3 − July 16, 2014
But it wasn’t until March of this year, when Krell released advance single “Words I Don’t Remember,” that we got our first glimpse at just how far he plans on taking How To Dress Well. Stretching past the six-minute mark, it builds on keyboard swells and hand claps while Krell sings about wanting love and space. It eventually breaks into a climactic finish with accompanying horns and Krell cooing for the apple of his eye. In the sequencing of “What Is This Heart?,” it is the album’s centerpiece, but it could arguably be its masterpiece. I say arguably because there are plenty of other songs on this album that could be considered How To Dress Well’s best track. I could foresee someone using “Very Best Friend” to win the heart of their own love interest, or using “Childhood Faith In Love (Everything Must Change, Everything Must Stay the Same)” as a catalyst for some major personal life choices. There is one fact that can’t be questioned: Tom Krell wants to show you what that beating drum in your chest is capable of doing. — Beau Blackstock, entertainment writer

THE ANTLERS, ‘FAMILIARS’
album review
T
here is an intimate energy emanating from The Antlers’ fifth studio album. “Familiars” dials back the intensity of the band’s previous albums in exchange for something similar to a warm, loving embrace. Opening track “Palace” slowly builds with twinkling piano notes and lead singer Peter Silberman reminiscing about a simpler past with a troubled lover. One of the most notable sounds throughout “Familiars” is the sound of Darby Cicci’s trumpet adding extra weight to Silberman’s poetry. The combination works best on the accessible “Hotel,” where Silberman attempts to isolate himself from his past. It’s an early stand-out as one of the shortest songs on the album, but the best “Familiars” has to offer comes when the band sinks in and stretches out. Album centerpiece “Director” subtracts the trumpet from the equation and adds seductive guitar picking to build to and sustain its climax. Silberman’s plea to overthrow the past is lifted with a guitar swell that is merely a tease before he cries to the skies, and the drums come crashing into the picture. It’s one of those rare musical moments that can cause tears to pool up in your eyes. It transitions into “Revisited,” a song that acts as a reprise to the album’s A-side with the trumpet returning to support Silberman’s recognizable falsetto. He wishes to cut ties with past mistakes in hopes of finding a newer, holy space on “Familiars” — the album’s longest track, just shy of eight minutes. Based on the lyrics and slower pacing on “Familiars,” it sounds like the band has found a sound it is ready to call home. The Antlers has been weighed down by past albums, especially 2008’s breakthrough “Hospice,” which was lyrically very grim. Silberman’s calmer approach to his lyrics makes the real highlights on “Familiars” the slow-burning instrumentation across the album’s 53-minute run time. Given the gentle, ethereal production, I predict this album won’t fully sink in until winter rolls around. But if you take the time now to recognize the subtle nuances of “Familiars,” when the time comes, you could be the one reaching for its comforting embrace. — Beau Blackstock, entertainment writer

THE FRESH AND ONLYS, ‘HOUSE OF SPIRITS’
S
an Francisco vagabond’s The Fresh and Onlys newest effort “House of Spirits” is its eighth record in six years, which might be misleading. Usually, when a group puts out that many releases in that amount of time, listeners either get the impression that they’re jaded on their own genius or that some of the work may be a bit watered down. Fortunately, The Fresh and Onlys have never had that problem, putting out quality work appealing to music heads and casual listeners alike from their early days on Castle Face Records. “House of Spirits” is the band’s third release on Mexican Summer, and it finds the band in a powerful, wandering-the-beach-at-midnight sort of head space that beckons listeners to forget what they’re doing tomorrow to take a trip into the realness of the haunted heart. Opening with a lovely piano lullaby, then catching fire, “Home Is Where?” gives a sense of longing not only lyrically but also musically. The hook is so well crafted that you can absolutely feel the emotion dripping in every note, giving Tim Cohen a soapbox to proclaim his nervous love and woe. Just when the

band eases us back down, “Who Let the Devil” takes us by the arm and drags us deeper into the night, the rhythm wandering blindly, but with purpose, letting Cohen use that soapbox again. One of the strongest tracks on the record, “Ballerina,” finds the band trading hard for soft, letting breezy, light percussion and twinkling guitars take listeners into a world where that beautiful someone is smiling back at them with a warm sort of love barely experienced but always pursued. The kind of love that’s so good that surely it must be a dream. Fresh and Onlys has achieved that lofty feat of bulking up its sound while at the same time retaining the honesty, integrity and emotion of its music without compromising. What makes this record so interesting is that although it sometimes sets your speakers ablaze, it never feels loud. Every single sound, from the squall of the guitar to the percussion and Cohen’s wonderful delivery, has a specific purpose. Everything is a small part of something greater. The Fresh and Onlys’ “House of Spirits” may be dark, but never has the band known where it was going with fuller hearts. — Kellen McGugan, entertainment writer

SAINTSENECA, ‘DARK ARC’
album review
C
olumbus, Ohio, troubadours Saintseneca offer up a different sort of record with “Dark Arc.” But it’s the kind of different that revels in exploration of the familiar unknown, traveling to places your friends have been or that you’ve longed to visit when skimming through National Geographic when the younger you knew nothing of consequence or responsibility. Singer/songwriter Zac Little is the tour guide, and “Dark Arc” breezes through all your wanderlust desire with the kind of Americana and twee tinge that’s prevalent but not the least bit overbearing. “Blood Bath” starts things off, bringing one of the strongest points of the record to the forefront from the word go. Little’s croon is the type most all folk singers wish they had: a little bit of crackle giving it the power of emotion, yet range enough to make his lyrics seem earnest and unique. The way he slides up and down his own range shows a singer comfortable in his own skin, yet still bold enough to push boundaries. “Daendors” gives a little peek into what surprisingly feels like Broken Social Scene, with clever guitar lines crisscrossing into a bouncy sort of song that belongs in your car as you wind your way through a new city. “Old as you are, all you ever do is wander,” Little sings on “Falling Off,” which gives us a wonderfully bulbous rhythm to bob down the street to. The band particularly shines here as no small part goes unnoticed — and not one thing sits out of place. The harmony of vocals mixed with poignant instrumentation is the kind of thing that’s often underappreciated in an age known for loud everythings. “Only the Young Die Good” brings this point home fantastically as the percussion drifts down the flowing torrent of whispering synth, and plucking, naked electric guitar is the perfect concoction to turn any cold-footed folk fan into a believer. Not to say that these songs are all about “kumbaya,” as Little’s lyrics are vulnerable and living things, decorated with the kind of heartache and desire surely all of us have felt even if we’d not care to admit it. Saintseneca offers us the perfect record to satisfy our wanderlust in “Dark Arc,” even if we can’t travel far. There is no filler here; no song is devoid of emotion or a clever instrument here or there that keeps you pleased through its duration. Indeed, some folk pulls all your usual heartstrings in all the usual ways. “Dark Arc” is just pulling those strings, tangling them up, cutting some loose and generally doing things with them you didn’t know could be done. — Kellen McGugan, entertainment writer

PRETTYBOY
Prettyboy talks new album, being a gay artist in OK BY BECKY CARMAN Entertainment writer
I
n just a few short years, Prettyboy, also known as Jacob Abello, has achieved Oklahoma pop icon status. Known for his elaborate stage shows and costume changes, he’s moving toward stripping down — this time in a more figurative sense — on the brink of his second album. Q: After the release of your first record as Jacob Abello, you changed the name of your band. Why? Jacob Abello: I wrote a lot of the first record (2009’s “Nothing but Gold”) when I was 18 or 19, and it was more about figuring out the trials of youth. I feel like I’ve found myself now; I don’t need to figure it out anymore, so I needed it to be an obvious transition for the music and for just who I’ve become. The name Prettyboy came from a friend who was dressing me up as Cruella de Vil for Halloween. She was doing my makeup and said, “I thought you’d be a pretty girl because you’re such a pretty boy, but you’re not.” The word struck me. I grew up in a small town, and “pretty boy” wasn’t a positive thing, so I kind of wanted to turn it around. That’s how I feel about pop music: Take negatives and turn them into positives. Q: Can you give us an update on the Kickstarter-funded fulllength album? Abello: We had a month at Blackwatch Studios (in Norman). We didn’t get as much done as we would like to, but that’s how those things go. I also had a respiratory infection for a month and a half that’s finally gone, so we’re scheduling everything now. It’ll hopefully be out in the fall. I had a lot of songs ready for it, and Jarod (Evans, producer) said, “We don’t have very many love
16
July 3 − July 16, 2014
songs.” I wrote four or five new ones, and now the record is almost all love songs, so it’ll be a different feel. I went through my first record the other day, and I don’t think there’s a single love song on there. There’s something very challenging about writing a love song. It’s been done so many times. I think when you’re young, you have to bleed all your feelings out into your songs, but when you’re older and you’ve figured some things out, the writing becomes more of an art form and less of an existential process. Q: How has your longtime friendship with Blackwatch Studios, and Jarod specifically, affected your growth as an artist? Abello: I met Jarod at Bible school. I think I was 6 years old. My first memory of him is going to his house. I got in trouble for jumping on a trampoline because I wasn’t allowed to do that, and also Jarod made fun of me because I had never played Monopoly before. We kind of lost touch a little bit, but I recorded a demo of “Why,” from the first record. It was the only song I had. Jarod believed in it and in me, and he was excited. Chad (Copelin, of Blackwatch) and Ryan (Lindsey, of BRONCHO) were local idols of mine at the time, and he was friends with them. Chad introduced me at a bar as an artist they were recording and said they were some of the best songs he’d ever recorded. It blew me away. That community of friends really believed in me without much to go on, and that became a friendship ... they’re my family now. They’ve really helped me become who I am as a person and as an artist. So supportive. I wouldn’t be myself without them. Q: You’re hesitant to perform if you don’t have time to plan something big for the show, something really entertaining. Tell me about your process for planning a live performance.
Abello: I want to do something people will remember and talk about the next day, and if I can’t do that, I feel like I’m wasting my time. Before, I relied a lot on costumes and theatrics, and I probably will do that in the future. Right now, though, it’s more of an internal process. I like to create a story. With this specific show, I’m thinking about growing up in Oklahoma, one of the worst places to grow up gay in the U.S. I’m thinking about what this community means to me. Even if people don’t exactly know what they’re seeing, they’ll feel something. Q: Your June performance was in celebration of Norman Pride Night. As a gay person, how do you think you’d be different as an artist if you lived somewhere else? Abello: This community has allowed me to be myself, to not think about it at all. I don’t wake up and think, “I’m gay.” I feel normal. I do everything more honestly. Lyrically, it hasn’t affected me much, but for sure, performancewise, all the bells and whistles stripped away, I can go up there and just project who I am, and that’s enough. This place has allowed me to feel that way. It sounds sort of cheesy, but I feel like myself onstage when I see people are enjoying it. I don’t have to think about being gay or even being a performer. I’m just myself. I have always felt connected to performers who do that, and I’m thankful for people who have allowed me to be who I am.

CLINT EASTWOOD, ‘JERSEY BOYS’
Eastwood discusses musical aspect of his movies NEW YORK — If your prevailing image of Clint Eastwood is of a rough-hewn, taciturn actor in guns-ablazing Westerns and noirish crime dramas or of a workmanlike director of varied and weighty films (ranging from “Breezy” and “Bronco Billy” to Oscar winners “Unforgiven” and “Million Dollar Baby”), then you’ve overlooked one consistently melodic strain that runs throughout his career. The no-nonsense, “make my day” actor-director is indeed possessed of a highly cultivated sense of musicality that often escapes wide notice. Both in front of the camera and behind it, Eastwood has always worked to put his personal stamp on the musical aspects of his movies. On screen, he portrayed a hip, womanizing disc jockey in 1971’s “Play Misty for Me,” a roguish country singer in 1982’s “Honkytonk Man” and even tried his hand at an old-fashioned big-screen musical in 1969’s “Paint Your Wagon.” In 1988, he directed “Bird,” a well-regarded biopic of jazzman Charlie Parker, and as an accomplished pianist he has composed original musical scores for nearly a dozen of his own films. In fact, in 2007, Eastwood was awarded an honorary doctor of music degree from the prestigious Berklee College of Music. So, while at first blush it may have surprised movie fans to see him take the director’s chair for a film adaptation of the Tony-winning Broadway musical “Jersey Boys,” to hear Eastwood tell it, it’s not that big a stretch. “I’ve done movies on country music, jazz and pop music of the ’50s and ’60s. I like music of all kinds, so I just immerse myself in it,” the lean, soft-spoken, 84year-old Eastwood said during a press conference for “Jersey Boys” hosted by Warner Bros. at the Waldorf Astoria Hotel. “I love to do films that are about musicians, or in this case singers. Of course, this one was easy because of the great cast.”
‘WHAT A NICE PROJECT’ “Jersey Boys” follows the Broadway book in telling the rags-to-riches story of four New Jersey friends who came together to form the iconic ’60s rock combo. The Four Seasons. The based-on-fact story charts their rise to fame and the personal problems that eventually tore the group apart, despite amassing a catalog of enduring pop hits (“Sherry,” “Big Girls Don’t Cry,” “Walk Like a Man” and so on) and launching the still-thriving solo career of falsetto-voiced lead singer Frankie Valli. Eastwood said he had heard good things about the Broadway play but hadn’t seen it before he signed on to direct the film version. After reading the film script by Marshall Brinkman and Rick Elice (who also wrote the book for the Broadway production), he said, “I went and saw three different versions of the play — in New York, San Francisco

PICTURES and Las Vegas — and saw all these wonderful actors and thought what a nice project to be doing.” Eventually, Eastwood cast three of the four band mates from those productions (Tony winner John Lloyd Young, from the Broadway show, as Valli, and Erich Bergen and Michael Lomenda, from the road shows, as prolific songwriter-keyboardist Bob Guardio and bass guitarist Nick Massi, respectively). Bad boy lead guitarist Tommy DeVito is played by “Boardwalk Empire” star Vincent Piazza, whom Eastwood discovered in auditions.
CLIMB TO STARDOM Although his personal musical tastes run more toward cool, West Coast jazz, Eastwood said he could identify with the Jersey boys’ creative struggles, which coincided with his own climb to stardom and his breakout part in the hit TV series “Rawhide.” “It was about the right era,” he said, “the same time, around 1959-60, my first break after years of doing bit parts and unappealing roles.” But that kindred spirit aspect had its limits. “I met Frankie Valli years ago in passing,” the director
said. “I was never a fan of music of that particular era, because I came along before all that. But I did like The Four Seasons a lot. “I think that their music was far superior — ‘Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You’ is one of the real classic songs of that era and would have been a classic song in the ’30s, ’40s or ’50s or any time in history.” “And all of their stuff was very energetic and great fun,” he said. “Certainly superior for that particular time in history, I believe. So it was a pleasant challenge to do this and to work with the actors that had actually formulated the play on its run throughout the country. It was great to be using the original people.” As for the challenge of translating the glossy spectacle of the stage play into a coherent screen story, Eastwood seemed typically matter-of-fact. “I didn’t think that was too much of a challenge,” he said. “It’s a wonderful play and it has a lot of excitement in it. But I could approach it more from a realistic angle. There are a lot of things you can do in a movie that you can’t do on stage, where they have to keep things moving and be very practical. So we just tried to open it up and give it a certain realism.” — Dennis King, entertainment writer

Eastwood’s careful direction elevates ‘Jersey Boys’ In translating Des McAnuff’s Tony-winning, golden-oldie stage musical “Jersey Boys” — about the rise and fall and redemption of Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons — to the big screen, director Clint Eastwood steps gingerly between soaring theatricality and hard-nosed realism. The long-running stage version is largely a formulaic jukebox production that shapes the story of the iconic pop band — and particularly its stand-up-guy, falsetto-voiced front man Frankie Valli — into a ragsto-riches, “Dreamgirls”-style saga crossed with a knee-breaking mobster tale of the “Casino”/“Goodfellas” kind. Mostly though, it uses its loose biographical framework to showcase the band’s dazzling array of pop hits. In his usual, low-key, no-frills fashion, Eastwood applies a level of careful craftsmanship to the core story, “opening it up,” as they say, and giving it more realistic dimensions and a grittier texture. While his version lacks the show-biz razzle-dazzle of the play, it compensates with deeper emotional development

of each character and a richer evocation of time and place. The narrative follows a standard biopic arc, introducing us to four Joisey mugs (Broadway Tony winner John Lloyd Young as Valli, Vincent Piazza as bad boy Tommy DeVito, Michael Lomenda as Nick Massi and Erich Bergen as clever pop tunesmith Bob Gaudio), showing us their halting formation as a band, their early struggles, their big break and rise to fame, their personal travails, their downfall and ultimate redemption, culminating with their 1990 induction into the Rock ’n’ Roll Hall of Fame. Eastwood has smartly cast three of the quartet from the stage shows, and he finds new dimensions of musical skill and macho chutzpah in “Boardwalk Empire’s” smoldering Piazza. He surrounds the four stars with a stellar supporting cast, including a silkysinister Christopher Walken as connected Jersey mobster Gyp DeCarlo and Mike Doyle as the flamboyant producer-lyricist Bob Crewe. The screenplay is by Broadway book writers Rick
Elice and Marshall Brickman (he collaborated with Woody Allen on “Annie Hall” and “Manhattan”), and it maintains the play’s multi-narrator structure, in which each bandmate relates his version of the story, sometimes talking directly to the camera (an awkward device that disrupts the film’s naturalism and throws things occasionally off kilter). As was the case with the Broadway show, the Jerseyfied Horatio Alger tale is interesting, but it’s the catchy Top 40 tunes that really drive the whole enterprise. And that’s most passionately embodied in the amazing performance of Young (a charismatic dynamo who originated the role on Broadway) as Valli. He’s the undisputed star of the show, and when he unleashes that soaring falsetto tenor, the film truly comes to life — capturing a world of hope and heartbreak as it carries us along from the sugary rush of “Sherry” to the achingly sublime pop poetry of “Can’t Take My Eyes Off of You.” — Dennis King, entertainment writer**COLR**

‘THE SIGNAL’
**COLR** 1:35 PG-13 2 1⁄2 stars Starring: Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp, Laurence Fishburne, Lin Shaye. (Some thematic elements, violence and language)
‘The Signal’ fades a little toward end of science-fiction film Science-fiction cinema doesn’t get much more beautifully strange than “The Signal.” An alien-interaction thriller that borrows from generations of such films that preceded it, it has the visual tone, production design and especially sound design to rival the best recent films in the genre. It features a compelling young cast and a wizened, inscrutable veteran of the genre as the chief antagonist. And then the filmmakers trip over themselves with a too-conventional, exposition-heavy “Let us explain this to you” finale that kind of unravels the strangeness that preceded it. “Signal” begins as “Catfish,” with three college kids played Brenton Thwaites, Olivia Cooke, Beau Knapp driving a battered Volvo cross-country. They’re Massachusetts Institute of Technology students, and they’re being hounded by a hacker. “Nomad” is “messing with us again,” Nick (Thwaites) warns Jonah (Knapp). They taunt the hacker, and the hacker taunts back — turning on the camera of a nearby computer in the hotel room they’ve just checked into, posting traffic camera shots of their trek, messing with their heads.

Nick, who suffers from a debilitating illness that has him on crutches, ignores his girlfriend’s first warning. Nick used to be a jock, a cross country star. Now, looking at a less mobile future, he’s moving that girlfriend, Haley (Cooke), across country, where she’ll attend Cal Tech. He’s irked, and he’s arrogant. He and Jonah trace Nomad to an address in the middle of the Nevada desert. “This doesn’t look right,” especially in the dark. And “Nick, you know this is stupid, right?” has no effect. Next thing you know come screams and a supernatural event. Nick wakes up in what appears to be an underground research lab of the type we’ve seen in films from “The Andromeda Strain” to “The Stand,” where everybody wears elaborate haz-mat suits, including Dr. Damon (Laurence Fishburne), who quietly, calmly, asks questions. And gives one answer. “You’ve made contact.” Director William Eubank handles the script’s “How
can I get out of this place?” sequence with skill. Nick’s methodical problem solving and reasoning, and his rising rage (he can see Haley is in a coma in another sealed room) bring out his arrogance. “You’re dinosaurs with government grants,” he fumes. “You’re a relic protecting ruins.” Is that him insulting Dr. Damon, or some higher intelligence infecting him? Thwaites, the Aussie actor who is Prince Phillip in “Maleficent,” makes a great, empathetic presence at the center of this, and Knapp (“Super 8”) a credible foil, even if the hacker with thick glasses is a genre cliche. But what makes “The Signal” work, up until it turns predictable, is the world they place these characters in. Meghan C. Rogers’ production design, David Lanzenberg’s cinematography (lovely flashbacks to Nick’s cross-country sprints in the woods in springtime), Nima Fakhrara’s eerie score and the overall sound design are top drawer. So, even though “Signal” isn’t great sci-fi, you’d never know it to look at it and listen to it. — Roger Moore, MCT Information Services

LARRY FLYNT: THE NEW GUY IN OKLAHOMA CITY LINGERIE? Oklahoma City has just gotten a little hotter. With summer’s onset, the weather is obviously getting hotter, but so are the lingerie options in town. In fact, summer’s lingerie styles are smoldering. A new Hustler Hollywood store that recently opened on S Meridian is upping the town’s ante on sexy lingerie and, ahem, accessories. Yes, Larry Flynt, owner of the chain, knows Oklahoma’s reputation as a conservative state. He doesn’t care. “What a lot of people don’t realize is that our

products sell better in conservative states than they do in the more liberal states,” Flynt said in a telephone interview. “I wish I knew why.” The Oklahoma City store is the first Hollywood Hustler in the Midwest, but will Oklahoma women flock or balk? Flynt said the average customers at his stores are middle-age women. Could this be a trickle-down effect of the erotic “50 Shades of Grey” fiction series by E.L. James, which some have dubbed “Mommy Porn”? Many think so. The Huffington Post, along with

dozens of other news outlets, recently featured stories declaring the series responsible for a “Baby Boomlet.” Whether you are inspired by the steamy “Shades of Grey” scenes between Christian and Anastasia or you blush at the thought, there is a perfect lingerie style out there for you. And with so many trends to choose from, you’re bound (no pun intended) to fall in love with some of the gorgeous lingerie looks available.

We still sell those, but now people will add on a hot pink or coral lace bra.” Hanky Panky lace camisoles and boy shorts are a big seller at The Lingerie Store, she said. They’re comfortable to sleep in, and women can wear the lace cami with jeans, skirts, over or under tank tops, or alone, if so daring. Slinky chemises of silk are another favorite for sleepwear, Brooks said. And even if you just want a pair of button-up jammies, you’ll find them in decadent fabrics and elegant styles at
The Lingerie Store. “Our clientele are pretty much open to the sexier stuff and the functional stuff. We pride ourselves on having both options available,” Brooks said. From silk night shirts to sheer chemises, the key, she said, is comfort. Manufacturers are making softer fabrics and designs that are more wearable than ever, she said. So, you look amazing without sacrificing comfort. — Heather Warlick, Life & Style editor

tos, curated by Tepsic, are then used to fill the pages of the magazine. There are no writers, no interviews with the artists or reviews of their work. The magazine’s fourth issue is currently in production. The concept of a magazine that contains only photos doesn’t seem so far-fetched for Tepsic if you consider his lifelong interest in photography. At age 6, Tepsic’s father gave him a handful of disposable cameras, which he used to take photos of his family. After they spent years in his childhood garage, Tepsic developed those rolls of film just one year ago. “It was a very full circle experience,” Tepsic says.
Early exposure At age 18, Tepsic moved overseas for a year and started documenting his travel through film photos. It was around this time also that he started developing his Lomography, a trademarked name for a community movement for off-the-cuff film photography, ideally using relatively inexpensive Lomo-branded cameras, which are known for their vivid photo colors and inconsistent exposures.

He kept photographic records of his travels, including a road trip across the United States funded by a private art grant, and he published his developed photographs via online mediasharing sites like Tumblr and Flickr, though there was some notable online news outlet coverage when Tepsic’s Flickr account was hacked and thousands of his photos were deleted. During this time, he also started what would become the precursor to Tepsic Magazine’s current incarnation, publishing a handful of issues before deciding on the current size and format. “When I approached the concept of this magazine, I wanted to create a premium-quality product on a startup budget,” Tepsic says. That meager budget is a primary reason why the disposable camera idea was born. “There just wasn’t any money to spend on digital cameras, and I am not interested in printing Instagram pictures, so I got creative and decorated the most affordable cameras I can send out,” Tepsic says. “I try and tell Kodak and Fuji that I can save this failing market for them — all you have to do is make it look cool.”

The inherent “cool” of Tepsic Magazine is certainly the result of a combination of a few things, including Tepsic’s eye for choosing interesting people to participate and then carefully selecting from the resulting photos. His primary focus has been on musicians — The Flaming Lips, A$AP Rocky, Twin Shadow and other independent music favorites have participated in past issues — as well as celebrity chef and author Anthony Bourdain, whom Tepsic calls the photographer of the most surprising pieces so far. “Anthony Bourdain had four cameras over the course of a year and half and went literally all over the world filming,” Tepsic says. “In some remote location in Africa, he’s ashore with women and children bathing and washing their clothes in a river. I had to take a step back and realize the (slim) chances I would ever receive pictures like his in a million years.” Tepsic spends much of his time on the magazine researching how to contact potential photographers, and he says about 95 percent of the cameras he sends out make it back. Once the photos are developed, the painstaking selection process begins. “It usually takes weeks for me to really make a decision about what pictures to print,” Tepsic says. “I am always finding new

This meticulousness comes through in the final product. Previous issues have caught the eye of Internet trendmakers like www.hypebeast.com and Urban Outfitters’ blog. “People are drawn to the magazine because it’s an incredibly simple concept that completely supports each artist,” Tepsic says. And artists like the concept because “it’s a format to show your life in pictures and to add whatever you want without the fear of us running photos you don’t want or getting negative reviews.” As Tepsic Magazine’s clout grows, Tepsic has his eye on one potential contributor in particular: Yeezy. “Kanye West is my dream artist to collaborate with,” Tepsic says, calling him “the biggest artist alive right now” and noting his “passion for design and art.” Far-fetched? Maybe, but Tepsic has a point about what makes Tepsic Magazine unique, not only to his audience but to the artists who participate: “It’s only a matter of time before all of these artists realize there’s an outlet to get cool exposure without risk.”
