I

t’s hard to believe I’ve got more than 10 issues of LOOKatOKC under my belt. And that belt is slowly starting to grow and this time it’s not because of breakfast tacos and my bi-monthly Mother Tucker habit. In fact, it’s because of the time and talent of our contributors. Kellen and Beau have been knocking out four album reviews per issue like champs. Matt Carney has altered his format to both share interesting new tracks and has continued to stay on top of the pop music world. Lacey Lett has started profiling some of the most interesting folks in Oklahoma City too. Even our newest features, Art Speaks and Drink & Draw, continue to shine a light on the immense amount of artistic talent in the metro. Becky Carman, Nick Trougakos, Tiffany Gibson and Steve Lackmeyer have knocked out some of the most interesting LOOK cover stories I’ve ever read and our design team is still top notch. Even our calendar is changing thanks to an effort from Melissa Howell. Also, if you haven’t noticed the new angle of the “shots” section then I suggest taking another look. Alright, I’m done bragging for now. I don’t mean to but I think the output as of late has been solid, and I only see us getting better. And in this issue we get a little weird. I hope you’re OK with that. The Confluence Con crew took to the interwebs to do some Twitterviews with some of the stranger Twitter users in the city in anticipation of the digital creativity event’s second year. Make sure to check that out. I’ve got a lot of optimism for the rest of this year’s issues of LOOKatOKC. So, make sure to keep up with us on Twitter and Facebook. We’ve got a lot of interesting news to share and it’s the easiest way to see who’s making things happen in OKC. In other words, let’s get digital.

‘Turn It Off,’ Carney can’t ‘Shake’ the blah taste of Swift’s single

MATT CARNEY All about creating a deeper relationship with music.

For every one thing I like about Taylor Swift’s garish, zippy new pop single “Shake It Off,” there are probably three or four that cause every joint in my body to cringe at once. There’s that terrific studio-engineered vocal rip at the end of the breakdown, the farty, fun little horn line that drives the song and, sure, it’s real catchy on account of the repetition of the hook, which is a war of attrition strategy when it comes to writing a hit. So saying “It’s real catchy” about a song like “Shake It Off,” where the phrase “shake it off” is used exactly 46 times, is like praising a hammer for hitting nails well. Having spent the last two years trying to sell my friends on Taylor Swift The Songwriter, I found “Shake It Off” to be embarrassing and hard to listen all the way through, a blunt instrument lacking the subtlety of the best songwriting on her last record, “Red.” “Shake It Off’s” sentiments boil down to “haters gonna hate so I’m gonna do my thing,” which is perfectly fine and inoffensive radio fodder, the kind of thing that gets people talking about a singer for a couple of weeks. It’s fun — essentially a dance song for people who can’t dance — but bland. As my girlfriend put it when “Shake It Off” came on the radio in her car last weekend, “I can’t even tell it’s her. It might as well be Carly Rae Jepsen or whoever.” So, why is the woman that New York Magazine last year declared the reigning queen of pop making the music industry equivalent of mono-genre vanilla? We may find a satisfying answer in two months, when Swift’s fifth studio record hits shelves.

According to the press that accompanied “Shake It Off,” “1989” is to be the 24-year-old’s first full-on pop album, a clean break from the country genre she came up on. But I’ve been wary about this proposition for months now, ever since the rumors started that Swift was writing her new record exclusively with Max Martin and Shellback, the Swedish pop masterminds who co-wrote three of the four hits on “Red.” Within the context of that exceptionally wellwritten record, “We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together,” “22” and “I Knew You Were Trouble” felt like frivolous detours into pop from the performing songwriter. But “Red’s” real bread and butter was its stadium rock balladry and lite-country crunch. “22” may have been the song you belted along with your friends on a roadtrip but “All Too Well” — which Swift co-wrote with veteran Nashville songwriter Liz Rose — actually endeared her to you with its specificity and vulnerability, traditions found in country. It was worth time in your headphones for lines like “You call me up again just to break me like a promise” and even poetry like “plaid-shirt days and nights when you made me your own.” An album full of “Shake It Off’s” — which is pretty much what I’m dreading of “1989” — seems too much to me like a pet project to be taken seriously, which is a huge bummer because of how hard I’ve tried to convince people to listen to Taylor Swift as a legitimate songwriting talent these last two years. After this, we may never ever get back together.

t’s a food truck frenzy in Oklahoma, and if you’ve been to H&8th on the last Friday of the month then you know what I’m talking about. Dozens of food trucks pack the city streets, but what happens to the gourmet eateries on wheels once the night is over? Josh Delozier and Travis Stephens made finding food trucks as easy as a tap of a button with Truck It OKC. Delozier said they created the app last year with the help of food truck owners to give them what they wanted in an app. “Once they (food truck owners) set up their profiles, they can check in at a location in under 30 seconds, push a single button to tweet out that location to their followers, and share their menus with the click of a button,” Delozier said. “Time is critical in the world of mobile cuisine, and our app is a great resource for everyone involved in the process.”

He said the idea started after trying to find a food truck to eat at for lunch. “I work in downtown and wanted to find a food truck for lunch one day,” Delozier said. “After downloading a couple of national food truck apps, I quickly realized that OKC’s trucks weren’t on them.” After going to each food truck’s social media site, he decided to give his buddy Stephens with the App Shop a phone call to roll out an easy-to-use smartphone app. It’s also an opportunity for them to get out to one of the weekly festivals and street parties to network with the more than 60 food trucks available in the metro. “Our app exists to help connect all of the dots in this series of events, locations, festivals and trucks,” ,” Delozier said. “And, since we’re food truck lovers too, it’s been an awesome experience.” Find out more about the app at www.truckitokc.com.

AARON NEWMAN & THE OK CARAVAN, SELF-TITLED

album review

Aaron Newman & The OK Caravan.

A

aron Newman is wise beyond his years. The Oklahoma City-based singer/songwriter knows that hard work pays off. Despite not having a record label, Newman pulled up his bootstraps, formed the OK Caravan and released an album filled with country-leaning songs himself. Album opener “1892” wastes no time demonstrating the talent of the OK Caravan. It’s a great fit that supports Newman as he ponders life in the 19th century. His reminiscing leads into the tragic story contained in “The Battle of Washita River.” Newman mournfully recounts the bloody Battle of Washita as Carlyon Dorsey makes his fiddle soar in the background. Lead single “Day Is Done” keeps the momentum going as it segues into a big band throwdown on “Going in No

Direction.” It’s a strong song highlighting Newman’s guitar playing and the thunderous roar of the OK Caravan. After such a powerful opening batch of tracks, “Winter Blues” is a welcome reprieve and a perfect album centerpiece. It’s a sincere, heartfelt song that was surely inspired by Oklahoma’s recent snowy winters. It’s a gorgeous track that becomes more beautiful with the album closer “Winter Blues (Reprise).” “Aaron Newman and the OK Caravan” is a solid collection of songs that is well sequenced for an easy full-album listen. It’s the sound of a tight band that has plenty of live performances under its belt. If you’re looking for a band that respects Oklahoma tradition, it’s time to saddle up with Aaron Newman and the OK Caravan.

FKA TWIGS, ‘LP1’

T

ahliah Barnett is stepping out of the background. Under the stage name FKA twigs (The “FKA” stands for Formerly Known As to avoid confusion with another artist named Twigs), Barnett has released a confident debut album simply titled “LP1.” It’s a dark, minimal make-out record that soon will overshadow the fact that Barnett used to be a backup dancer for other pop stars. Twigs bridges her past and future on the track “Video Girl,” where she admits to lying about being “the girl that’s from the video.” It’s the sound of Barnett being so close to the center of attention and not settling until she is the camera’s sole focus. A quick YouTube search will show she’s doing just that with the music videos from her previous EPs and especially with lead single “Two Weeks.” It’s hard to listen to “Two Weeks” now without seeing her dressed up as a goddess in the video as she enunciates her lyrics in sync with the icy beat underneath. It gives way to

Page 12

August 27 - September 9, 2014

her howling to the heavens, displaying her vocal range and proving she’s ready for the spotlight. Despite working with a wide range of producers, “LP1” doesn’t jump through multiple style hoops. The Clams Casino and Devonte Hynes co-produced “Hours” seamlessly segues into Oscar-winner Paul Epworth’s co-contribution “Pendulum” without missing a beat. Each song has Barnett’s voice front and center, with stuttering drum machines clicking in the background. She is in full control throughout, putting her fragile voice on full display. Although Barnett sings about a sensual evening on “Lights On,” there is a haunting darkness woven into the song and the rest of the album. For someone ready to be the center of attention, she’s still leaving one foot in the shadows and maintaining a sense of mystery. FKA twigs is walking a fine line between stardom and obscurity, but with a debut this strong, I suspect she’ll keep her balance gracefully.

BEAR IN HEAVEN, ‘TIME IS OVER ONE DAY OLD’

B

rooklyn’s Bear in Heaven is still finding a way to let its unique electropsychedelia brand of pop explore new areas of itself on “Time Is Over One Day Old.” Singer Jon Philpot, who has been the band’s leader in an everchanging think tank of artists since the project’s inception, is finding himself more composed and driven with purpose than with the band’s last and truly underrated record, 2012’s “I Love You, It’s Cool.” Where that record reveled in the joy of emotion found or love triumphant, this release finds Philpot settling into his songwriting groove and tying up sonic loose ends here and there. The new album gives off a futuristic, trippy sensation, like a record removed from a time capsule 3,000 years in the future. The album’s single “Time Between,” with grinding synth and pounding percussion putting out a feeling of purposeful funk, is complemented by Philpot’s airy, translucent vocal melody that’s akin to acts like Stone Roses. It’s the mixing of these two different styles that might seem off-putting, like barbecue sauce and ice cream, that actually turns out to play in the band’s favor. “They Dream,” another standout, finds the band rocketing off into galaxies unknown. The mystery of the unknown drives everything about this song, with Philpot again lending his vocal stylings perfectly. Other tracks on the record, like “Dissolve the Walls,” let the band enjoy its time in a beautiful limbo of leaving Earth and entering space, using a sort of quiet noise and dissonance to the song’s advantage. It lets the listener in on this journey. Perhaps that’s the whole point of “Time Is Over One Day Old” - to know that it’s time to create a journey of your own, be it physical, spiritual or mental. There is a message here of elevation and flight, or perhaps an elevated way of thinking. Philpot floats, arms spread, over this entire record as a sort of guide for the journey that you may not even know you need to take. The beautiful part is that it’s a risk, and a risk worth taking.

GUM, SELF-TITLED

O

klahoma City’s Gum is on the forefront of the rock vanguard and has taken its time with this self-titled debut. No stone has been left unturned, and no detail has been breezed over. From the jump, there’s a sense of a band that has a purpose in giving an eponymous release something more than just 11 songs. In every click and clack, every bang of the drum and every crunch of a guitar and dawdle of keys, there is a band creating an identity and musicians crafting something that leaves a mark. “Care About Nothing” is an excellent example. Rambling drums take a dip in a wash of keys while Joe Bello’s confident tone carries the song that shows, deep down, the need for a symbiotic relationship with someone or something. The song builds beautifully as that wash of synth slowly possesses the entire track. On the track “Loves Her,” the Interpol-esque drive of instrumentation sets the scene that maybe love could be in the cards. “Though we still pretend to be

alone/ how can we believe what we don’t know?” Bello asks. It’s an interesting observation that even when things go great, humans tend to wallow in their sorrow at times. The sorrow of never finding relief is present on “So Long Ago,” and not just lyrically. Muted licks and a synth plucked out of the ocean give that sense of urgency with the aid of release being left somewhere you’ve been but you’ve forgotten, like a vacation or simply traveling before smartphones. Perhaps the best part of “So Long Ago” is the band’s good ear in not letting the guitar howl as predictably as it does in other songs from other bands with similar ambitions. Instead, Gum has the good sense to let it ride in the background, carrying the song and every so often stepping out of line for a squeal or two that adds another layer to a song that already has plenty of depth if you know where to listen. “Weird Dream” gives itself over to the Air “Pocket Symphony” styling, with an absolutely gorgeous

piano line skipping like a stone on a silent pond that is Bello’s melody before giving way to Gum’s clever guitar work. Rhythmically, “Weird Dream” excels in such a way that it does just enough to give the song that drive that “Gum” is teeming with. Few moments stand out on any record the way “Fly Me to the Ocean” does, with the way it simply gives itself to the melancholy of its own pace, slowly forming into a beautiful cataclysm of thundering drums and guitars that ache to roar. With rock music being the ever-evolving enigma it will always be, Gum has put its own warped, oddly beautiful spin on the norm, constructing a record that questions the true genesis of loneliness, depression, loss and ultimately the redeeming power of love. “Gum” does us the favor of finding the beauty in all these things. It’s a record to share with your friends, and it’s a record to smile about.

ELECTRIC WURMS

band q&a

Lips’ Drozd talks about being Wurm’s frontman BY BECKY CARMAN Entertainment writer

If you’re a fan of the Flaming Lips, then you already know him. The operatic background vocals and life-changing drum fills on record; the man behind the curtain to Wayne Coyne’s floating wizard head; the caped gentleman stage right, playing a hundred instruments in ways the average human could never figure out how to do. Those are all Steven Drozd, the Lips’ resident prodigy and multi-instrumentalist. Drozd is tentatively stepping into the figurative limelight with Electric Wurms, a tangential, proggy, sinister offshoot of the Lips. Electric Wurms is, sort of, the prog-rock little brother of the Flaming Lips, featuring Drozd on lead vocals and guitar and Wayne Coyne on bass. The duo, for future shows, will be joined onstage by Nashville, Tenn., band Linear Downfall. Electric Wurms’ debut, “Musik, Die Shwer Zu Twerk” — that is, “Music that is hard to twerk to,” loosely — comes out on Warner Bros. Records on Tuesday, and the group has tentative European club dates planned. Drozd is indisputedly, as a Warner Bros. rep said to me during a pre-interview phone call, “a genius.” He’s also funny and polite, and his dream karaoke song is “Gypsy” by Fleetwood Mac, as I found out when I chatted with Drozd for a few minutes recently to get the scoop on how the Wurms came to be in the midst of all the Lips chaos. Where did the material for this band come from? Steven Drozd: Probably two years ago, Wayne and I had a “what if” conversation: What if someone did this or did that, did this kind of music or was this kind of band? That turned into, “Oh, we should do that,” so we started this sort of side project ... the two of us and some other people playing a type of music that doesn’t necessarily have to be Lips music. We started recording a while back, and then everything was put on hold, since we go through phases where the Lips are just too busy to do anything. It was like that for a while. So, yeah, it started as a “what if,” and I’m usually satisfied with just saying, “That would be cool if

someone did do that,” and forgetting about it, but Wayne, of course, said, “We have to do it.” It just went from there.

Q:

When you’re writing or recording something, do you have the end game for that piece of music in mind? Do you think about what the release might be, or just what you’re doing right in that moment? Drozd: It depends on what it is. Some things, as soon as I start on them, I have an expectation that it’ll do this or do that. Other things I just enjoy working on in that moment. Right now, I’ve got this song I’ve had for a little while, and I was hoping Miley Cyrus could record it with (the Lips). As soon as I came up with the chords and this melody, that was in my mind. But then there are things I do, that I’ll play for Wayne, and he’ll say, “I like that,” and start working on it, and I actually just forget about it. It’s all over the place, really.

Q:

If you are working on something and then get really busy with touring, are you able to come back to it and pick up where you left off? Or do you have to start that creative process over with the now-old material? Drozd: You know, that’s a good question; I don’t know if anyone has ever asked me that. Sometimes I’ll try to think of a piece of music that got put on hold for whatever reason, and it’ll stay in my mind, and I’ll think that whenever we can get back to it, we should do this or that.

But I’ve had songs before that I’ve played for Wayne, as far as Lips stuff, that he just didn’t respond to, so I forgot about it for a year or two. “Race for the Prize” had four different versions. I played it for the first time in 1992, and it felt like a Dinosaur Jr. song. After hearing it again years later ... it’s no wonder none of us wanted it. A few years later, I revamped it, and then Wayne said it sounded like a car commercial. In the summer of 1996, I came up with the big drums and the small drums and the kind of ’70s AM radio sound, and that was when he finally responded to it. There have been a few like that. I’ll forget about them and then listen back later and say, “Oh yeah.” It surprises me, and hearing it for the first time again a couple years later, it’s like someone else’s music, almost. That’s pretty fun. How do you feel about being the frontman? What’s this other element like for you onstage? Drozd: I am the lead singer on most of the Electric Wurms songs but not on all of it, and I have to say, it did not take me long to really like it. Within a couple of hours of us practicing, with me standing in the middle, I understand why you’d want to just do lead vocals. You’re there and you’re listening to cool music, and you get to sing on top of it. I love it. At first, though, I didn’t really know what to do, and Wayne said to keep standing there, focusing on singing as well as I can, and that it looked great. It’s really fun to just get to sing. I’m playing a little guitar but not really while singing; it’s one or the other. I very quickly learned that I am way into it.

STARDEATH AND WHITE DWARFS

Stardeath releases new album, talks highs and lows of flying under Flaming Lips’ wing

on’t ask bands how they chose their names. It’s a ridiculous question and one often answered with annoyance, embarrassment or even straight-up fiction. I learned this lesson in the fall of 2006, when a summer internship with Hellfire Enterprises music marketing office in Edmond led me to an interview with a relatively new local band at the time, called Stardeath and White Dwarfs. Singer Dennis Coyne’s exasperated explanation didn’t make it into my final article, but I vaguely remember him telling me they pulled the name randomly from the title of an old book that was lying around. That tidbit does not make for a good story. NASA defines a white dwarf as a low-mass star burning dimly at the end of its life. The first was discovered in 1863, a comparatively miniscule glow near Sirius, the brightest star visible from Earth, after the sun. White dwarfs are difficult to find on their own. They are often noticed only because of

Page 16

August 27 - September 9, 2014

their attachment to something bigger. I doubt that Oklahoma’s Stardeath and White Dwarfs had this in mind when the band formed in 2004, though the metaphor is fitting. Astronomers struggle with the same thing music writers have failed to accomplish. None of us can recognize Stardeath’s autonomy because of its bigger star. In this case, that star is front man Dennis Coyne’s uncle Wayne Coyne’s band, The Flaming Lips. Calling on that connection is an easy out; ignoring it is glaring omission. Most of Stardeath’s fans first heard of the band via its connection with the Lips. Sure, it’s nepotism, but this is a case where that makes sense. They are related. And they do sound alike. “It’s obviously helped us. It got people to listen to us who would’ve never listened to us,” Dennis Coyne said. “And it’s hurt us in some ways too. People may have decided to hate us because of that connection. So it evens out in the end, I guess, but if I had to weigh it on one side, it’s been a blessing more than a curse.”

Drummer Matt Duckworth added, “At this point, the bands are so connected, there’s no escaping it.” Duckworth, who recently took on drumming duties with the Lips after Kliph Scurlock’s departure, rightly points out that The Flaming Lips now encompasses a network of bands. Dallas artist New Fumes, for example, is one contributor to the Lips’ creative pool, and he — along with the Lips, of course — makes a cameo appearance on Stardeath’s new album, “Wastoid,” released July 29 on Warner Bros. subsidiary label Federal Prism.

CONFUSION, THEN CLARITY The release of “Wastoid” has been a long time coming, with Stardeath wallowing in record label turmoil for several years following its 2009 album “The Birth.” “It seemed like every time we’d make some headway, the label would fire someone,” Dennis Coyne said. “Whatever guy at the desk was about to pick

LOOKATOKC.COM

STARDEATH AND WHITE DWARFS

music feature

up the Stardeath paperwork, that’s the guy who got fired, and we went to the bottom of the stack.” This sounds common enough, but when the only real example you have of how the music industry works is a tenured band with significant creative freedom on a major label, it comes as quite a shock. “I think our frustrations are only from not expecting it. We always heard about records getting shelved, but Wayne just puts something out at a moment’s notice,” Dennis Coyne said. “I never knew there were things beyond a band’s control that stopped them from putting out records.” The members of Stardeath kept themselves busy in the meantime, writing and recording individually and as a group. They also worked jobs unrelated to music to support their young families (bassist Casey Joseph and Dennis Coyne are fathers). Coyne had a temporary gig giving Water Taxi tours of the Bricktown Canal, which led to a late-night moment of clarity. “I saw a band loading out of Bourbon Street, and I felt so out of place. I thought, ‘I should be loading out. I shouldn’t be doing this,’ ” Coyne said. “No offense to Water Taxi, but I’m the one who should be loading at three in the morning, not somebody else. When your personal lives get involved with your music, it either makes the things you’re doing more important or less important, and for me, it’s made this more important.”

‘IT NEVER STOPS’ You can scoff at the idea that Stardeath has it as hard as any other local band, but the reality is just that. Its elevated profile has garnered it a few things that remain elusive for many bands, but it’s also operating under a bureaucracy it has minimal control over and at a level where a single show can make or break it financially in the short-term. Coyne says of the band’s immediate future, “We just hope the record has enough life to get us on tour, playing for people.” With the fluidity of the band’s particular community and multiple other things keeping its members occupied, has Stardeath found a reason yet to let the light go out? “We’ve had plenty,” Coyne said laughing. “One of the great things about this, though, is that we’re always working on something,” Joseph said. “We all have a pretty extensive catalog of stuff to pull from individually. It’s not like we sit down and say we’re going to make a Stardeath idea. The idea of not doing this terrifies me more than doing this, so I do it. I don’t know how to do anything else.” Coyne agrees and says he spends much of his time at the Lips-owned Pink Floor Studio in Oklahoma City. “It never stops. There’s plenty of time to make a lot of music, but as for what it’s for, I don’t know.” Scientists speculate that a white dwarf, after billions of years of releasing its stored energy, will eventually go dark. But it’s impossible to know for sure, because it hasn’t happened yet.

‘If I Stay’ has plenty for music lovers to ponder

D

ecisions, decisions, decisions. First, gifted teenage cellist Mia Hall (Chloe Grace Moretz) must choose between going to Juilliard and devoting her life to a career in classical music, or following the new love of her life, Adam (Jamie Blackley), an up-and-coming rock star. Then, the stakes are raised to a far more critical level when a horrific car accident leaves her in a coma, suspended between life and death. In an out-of-body experience, she assesses her relationships with Adam, her family and friends — and the dreams she’s held so dearly since childhood — and faces the impossible choice of letting go or clinging to a life that may not turn out the way she’d always hoped. In the immortal words of the Clash, Mia’s dilemma is: “Should I stay or should I go?” That’s the basic storyline of “If I Stay,” based on the best-selling novel for young adults by Gayle Forman, adapted for the screen by Shauna Cross (“Whip It”) and directed by R.J. Cutler (“The Sep-

Page 18

tember Issue”), making his narrative film debut. The question is, will this film appeal to anyone beyond the young — predominantly female — adult market? Possibly, if word gets out about the fine acting from a solid cast, and the excellent music — classical and rock — which is essential to this film about music lovers being in love, enhancing and underscoring the emotions of the most telling and crucial scenes that are unfolding in flashback during Mia’s out-of-body experience in the hospital where she lies comatose. In fact, it’s music that runs through the veins of Mia’s entire family. Mireille Enos (“World War Z”) and Joshua Leonard (“Higher Ground”) are funny and lovable as Mia’s ultra-hip parents. Dad’s a former drummer with the punk band Nasty Bruises, now a teacher and responsible family man though still a rocker at heart. Mom, now a travel agent, used to carry Mia to her husband’s gigs and is still a fan of people like Deborah Harry, and Mia’s little brother, Teddy (Jakob Davies), is handy with

the drums himself and worships Iggy Pop (pre-1978, mind you). Yet Mia has grown to be a shy, retiring virtuoso on the cello, with the full support of her parents, and the center of Adam’s universe when he spots her one afternoon at school, playing her cello with the kind of passion he invests in his guitar solos. Without ever getting too soapy or pseudo-hip for its own good, “If I Stay” has its own moving, sometimes funny, sometimes overly sentimental way of examining how romantic and familial love, hard choices and unexpected tragedy can define us and change the course of our lives. It helps, too, that Moretz and Blackley form a sweet chemistry together, and Blackley is pretty impressive on vocals and guitar in Adam’s band, Willamette Stone, which is a real band performing some very solid songs selected by Cutler, music supervisor Linda Cohen and the film’s composer, Heitor Pereira. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment writer

CHLOE GRACE MORETZ, ‘IF I STAY’

movie feature

Chloe Grace Moretz tackles love, music in dramatic film role BY GENE TRIPLETT For LOOKatOKC

DALLAS — When it comes to landing roles in all kinds of movies, age doesn’t seem to be an issue for Chloe Grace Moretz. At 17, the Atlanta native already is known as one of the most versatile actresses in film, and many of her characters have been on the dark side in R-rated features. The bestknown of these are the foulmouthed 11-year-old vigilante Hit-Girl in the controversial “Kick-Ass” and “Kick-Ass 2,” and the shy high school outcast turned telekinetic monster in the 2013 remake of the horror classic “Carrie.” And don’t try to tell Moretz that her latest film, “If I Stay,” based on the best-selling young-adult novel by Gayle Forman, is strictly for teenage females. “It’s just a basic story about love of life and the family, and I think no matter how old you are, you can have a love of life and family,” she said during a recent publicity tour stop at the Ritz Carlton Hotel. “It’s not just about your first love,” Moretz said. “That’s a very small plot point in the scheme of this gigantic, all-encompassing kind of story.” In “If I Stay,” Moretz again plays a shy outsider, but this girl, Mia, is a cello virtuoso who must choose between her dreams of attending Juilliard and devoting her life to classical music, or devoting herself to the love of her life, Adam (Jamie Blackley), who’s destined for rock stardom. Forman, who accompanied Moretz in the interview with The Oklahoman, said she was happy with the way screenwriter Shauna Cross and director R.J. Cutler adapted “If I Stay” for the screen, and the author

was especially pleased with the way Moretz brought Mia to life. “Everything I saw, from the drafts of the scripts to what I saw on set, to what I saw when I saw the first cut, to the final cut, to the music, to the way (Cutler) cast it, everything along the way was like one more puzzle piece put in play, and now there’s the final product, and I couldn’t be happier,” Forman said. “When (Moretz) came on board, that was the linchpin of it all. And there was a moment when she started taking cello lessons and she posted a picture

of herself playing the cello, and at that moment, she became Mia in my head,” the writer said. “And the more I got to know her in real life, I understood how similar the two of them actually are and why that kind of made sense.” Moretz said one of the main aspects of the story that appealed to her was the way Mia’s family life was depicted: tight-knit, with loving parents (Mireille Enos and Joshua Leonard) who are former punk rockers yet fully supportive of their daughter’s desire to play classical music. “One of the biggest things (that attracted me) was the fact

of the familial love and the kind of palpable relationship between every character in this story,” Moretz said. “There wasn’t a moment left untouched where you didn’t feel that this girl had so much love in her life, and to feel the impact of that all leaving. And I felt that it really hit home with me and my family — and how much I love my family and how close they are to me — and I think it was so much more than just a typical young-adult, noveloriented story. It really reached levels that I didn’t expect to be hit with in my life.” So don’t expect just another

“cutesy” teen romance if you buy a ticket to “If I Stay,” Moretz warned. “It’s more just witnessing life,” she said. “And instead of some sort of societal issue being shoved down your throat, it’s more just watching life happen, because we don’t do that anymore. We get so caught up in everything lately. The older generation might actually like this movie more because it’s not based around all the new, young stuff that we all live with. Honestly, it’s much more of a ’50s kind of movie in that sense, which is based more around naturalistic things.”

‘Boyhood’ captures high notes, boredom of messy life

R

ichard Linkater’s “Boyhood” is being billed as the movie roughly 12 years in the making. Director Linklater (“Dazed and Confused,” “School of Rock”) and a relatively small crew, aged along with the movie’s production as it chronicled the life of a fictional youngster named Mason (Ellar Coltrane) from age 6 to 18. That premise is equal parts ambitious and impressive. As far as I know, there’s nothing quite like “Boyhood” in existence. At the very least, it sure makes for some great trailer hype, right? Yet, it was hard for me to disconnect from the movie’s premise. “Boyhood” undoubtedly will continue to receive accolades for its unique structure, but I have to ask: Does spending more than a decade using the same actors really add to a story? I think not.

Page 20

August 27 - September 9, 2014

If I had walked into “Boyhood” without knowing the premise, then I wouldn’t have realized Mason was being played by Coltrane for all those years. Same actor or not, the success of “Boyhood” instead teeters on how emotionally invested you get into the plight of an adolescent dealing with harsh realities, love, divorce and very flawed adults. At times, I felt “Boyhood” dipped into boring territory. And it almost had to. I forget just how often I was bored growing up, and the film captures Mason’s restlessness perfectly. “Boyhood” is also grossly uncomfortable. Watching Mason’s deranged, drunk stepfather erupt at the dinner table made me want to lock myself in a bathroom and call for help. Much of “Boyhood” is messy, and that’s what I love about this movie. So was my adolescence. I literally stood over a dying bird as my friends egged me on to finish it off. I had idiot middle school friends who joked

about romantic escapades that probably never happened and who lived for grossing people out with macho nonsense. I was even bullied. And a lot of that is mirrored throughout scenes of Mason’s life as his family moves between various Texas communities and he ends up in college. You can only cover so much in single movie, but Linklater and company hit the high notes and wrap the film in a weirdly nostalgic soundtrack (with contributions from Okie heavyweights the Flamings Lips and Kings of Leon). If you’re looking for something dramatic and different this summer, here it is. If you’re not, then there’s some ninja turtles and various comic book characters a few theaters over to keep you company. — Nathan Poppe

Superb acting and narrative redeem dark ‘Calvary’

n suspenseful dramas, we wait for the rewarding moment when the wicked receive their comeuppance, but John Michael McDonagh’s tightly wound “Calvary” turns this expectation on its head. After the film’s shocking opening line — uttered in a confessional booth by an unseen male — grabs our attention, we are taken on a dark journey that shows humanity at its most caustic. Brendan Gleeson (“In Bruges,” the “Harry Potter” series), in perhaps his best role to date, plays Father James, a gruff, witty and compassionate man who comes across as an example of a “good priest.” Ironically, it is his goodness that will eventually lead to his unraveling. The mysterious confessor rages to Father James about the sexual abuse he suffered as a young boy,

LOOKATOKC.COM

which came at the hands of a morally corrupt priest. The confessor had suffered horrifically with memories of violation. In order to reconcile this theft of innocence, the confessor chooses to exact his own judgment, taking the eye-for-an-eye approach. He seeks revenge in the form of murder, but he doesn’t want to kill a bad priest, he wants to kill a good priest. He wants to take someone’s innocence. “I’ll give you a week to get your affairs in order,” he tells Father James. In the following week, every parishioner becomes a suspect when Father James reveals to the archbishop that he knows who was in the confessional booth. Although he knows, he continues with his routines, which often involve attempting to help those who clearly despise what he stands for.

The people of this small Irish town share one thing in common: a suspicion of the Catholic monolith. Father James is their straw man against whom blame is hurled for every slight his parishioners experience. Being a good man, he bears a tremendous amount of bullying, but he continues to stand his ground until the film’s electrifying conclusion. “Calvary” is a triumph of good storytelling and superb acting, powered by dark intensity and bitter humor. It’s a film that will stick with you long after it’s over, prompting uncomfortable questions about the modern state of humanity. — Grace Gordon, Entertainment writer

onfluence Conference is Oklahoma City’s digital creativity conference. That description isn’t specific, we know — but that’s kind of the point. The Confluence team works hard to bring together people that live, work and play in all corners of the Internet. Our speakers include web designers, professional bloggers, award-winning journalists, videographers, and comedians. That means that our attendees can gain insights into whatever it is they do on the Internet — whether that’s marketing themselves, their businesses, their agendas or connecting with people in the community. Confluence isn’t just for Internet professionals: It is geared to help you find your way and your voice in the dynamic digital world. If there’s one thing that unites all of the speakers and attendees in the room, it is everyone is looking for ways to have fun with the Internet. It’s one of the best ways to connect with people and create bonds, after all. We wanted to find some of the most influential digital entities out there and bring them into the Confluence community. Some of these individuals have cultivated impressive engagement and created a loyal following. Perhaps unsurprisingly, some of them aren’t real: They are infamous parody accounts on Twitter. Over the past few weeks, we’ve been conducting a series of interviews with some of the most interesting and entertaining digital influencers to show that being sharp, funny and trend-aware can take you far in the digital world.

OH SAY CAN YOU SEE? MY MONUMENT IS COMING TO THEE. READ MY WORDS, OKLAHOMA.

@ConfluenceCon: Do you prefer 'Bill' or 'William' among friends?

@BillofRightsOKC: I prefer Bill. But, people have the right to call me the name they prefer best.

@CC: Okay, Willy. What is the most important right that you provide for people in Oklahoma? @BoROKC: I give a reminder of the right to rights & the rights derived from the Bill of Rights. Rights is a weird word.

@CC: Seems like the right to bare/bear arms could be quite fuzzy. Next question... Why did you turn down the role of "treasure map" in the National Treasure movies with @NicolasCagest? @BoROKC: To be honest, because of his eaglelike hair & declining reputation. I can't besmirch myself.

@CC: @NicolasCagest HAS THE RIGHT TO MAKE ANY MOVIE AS BAD AS HE FEELS NECESSARY. Moving on... Who do you consider as your biggest threat in Oklahoma? @BoROKC: I have a growing fear of Sally Kern and Governor Fallin's pantsuits. @CC: Which amendment do you like the least and what would you replace it with?

@BoROKC: Do we really need the 3rd? I think a new consideration would be the right to wear casual attire to work. @CC: Can you describe the perfect date night for the Bill of Rights? Who would you go with? @BoROKC: The (hot) citizen & I would sit upon the steps of the Capitol & passionately discuss their rights until dawn. I would love to talk about rights with @RepEmilyVirgin, as she is a vision of protecting citizen's rights.

Good news, ladies. You can stop washing your hair as often. Well, that’s if you want to organically achieve the tousled, lived-in styles that are all the rage in Hollywood. In fact, many experts recommend you don’t wash your hair everyday, and today’s styles support that recommendation. Whether you want to go with a cute little pixie cut like Halle Berry or a long, full, sexy look like Kim Kardashian, the looks are loose, unstructured and lived-in.

HOLLYWOOD HAIR

We chose some of Hollywood’s favorite and most glamorous actresses and asked some local hairstylists how to achieve the looks. We talked to Adrian Crawford, color director and manager at DK Salon and LaShanda Willis and Erika Henderson, stylists at JC’s Funky Hair Ranch in Edmond. “All these styles look lived in,” Crawford said. “Nothing is perfect, nothing is fixed. Its’ all very natural, very relaxed. So if you have some frizz, if you have something disconnected, that’s almost encouraged because it looks more lived in, more like ‘I just got out of the beach and I’m glamorous and awesome.’ “ this is awesome.

THE PIXIE Halle Berry has long had short locks but this season, she’s dumped the angular cut for a softer, more naturall look. Willis said first to give the hairr a blowout, completely straight, using g a relaxing serum and a moisturizer.. Using a round edge iron, pull sectionss o into smooth, long curls all the way to h the ends. Finish the look with a high d shine wax to separate the curls and hold them in place.

THE LOB The Lob, or long bob, is super popular in Hollywood, d, high schools and business offices this fall because it’s t’s put together without looking too fussy. It’s an easy sy style to maintain and has a bit of edge when you go asymmetrical, with “dropouts” that add accent and interest. Crawford said this is a very popular style among women men with h long hair who want to go shorter but don’t want to o take the plunge and go pixie. Try a salt or sugar spray and some root boosting mousse usse with this look. Chin length lob cuts are perfect for a heart-shapee face like Reese Witherspoon’s, but if you have a more round or square ccentuatface, let the lob be a little longer, to keep from over-accentuating your chin.

GOING TO LENGTHS For longer hair, a new version of the shag may be just your groove. Jessica Biel is rocking a new method of ombre color called Balayage. Balayage, Henderson explains, is a way of adding bright highlights, similar to ombre coloring, but more artistically painted on, for a softer affect. Jennifer Garner is taking advantage of her own gentle curl pattern with her lived-in look. Her full fringe (bangs) is side swept, for versatility. She could part her hair in the center, and her long bangs will act as face-framing layers (see Kim Kardashian’s style). For these lived-in looks, back combing and root boosting is key. Salt and sugar sprays are helpful (unless your hair is naturally dry, then opt for a moisturizing styling wax). Emma Watson rocks her medium length beachy waves in a classic half-up style with her ends blunt-cut. To gain height, Henderson recommends using large hot rollers at the crown. To achieve the next day texture, dry shampoo is your ticket. “Dry shampoo is a girl’s best friend,” Crawford said.

I S THAT R E AL? And if you desire extra long hair, try waiting for years, or slip on some extensions. It’s almost certain that Kim Kardasian’s inhumanly thick hair is partly thanks to long extensions worn under her natural hair, or permanently attached. Clip in hair extensions are a fun way to change up your hair style on a daily basis. They’re also to twist and finagle into an updo for a special occasion. And bucking the mussed up trend, Taylor Swift, with her masses of perfect curls, could be the poster girl for curly hair extensions. If you are gifted with hair this long, a one-inch barrel curling iron, a thermal protectant, mousse for hold and volume, and about an hour’s work, will yield results like these.

Revamped ‘Phantom’ comes to Oklahoma City

Producer Cameron Mackintosh gives “Phantom of the Opera" a fresh look as it embarks on its second quarter-century. That revamped production arrives this week in Oklahoma City, where it will run for two weeks at the Civic Center Music Hall. It’s the opening production of Celebrity Attractions’ 2014-15 season. “In honor of the 25th anniversary, Cameron wanted to create a new version of ‘Phantom,’ both as a gift back to the original production and as a gift to future audiences,” said Seth Sklar-Heyn, the production’s associate director. “People have seen the show, they know it, and they love it. Why not create something that will let them experience it in a new way again? Now there’s a deeper intention behind what the characters are doing. That brings a different clarity to the production.” The show runs Aug 27 through Sept. 7 at the Civic Center Music Hall, 201 N Walker. Curtain times are 7:30 p.m. Tuesdays through Thursdays; 8 p.m. Fridays; 2 and 8 p.m. Saturdays and 2 and 7:30 p.m. Sundays. One 2 p.m. matinee is scheduled Aug. 28. For information, call (800) 869-1451 or visit celebrityattractions.com. — Brandy McDonnell, The OklaThe “Phantom of the Opera” company performs “Masquerade.” Photo by Alastair Muir homan

coyotes and circus performers, and thus doesn’t know his real birthday.
