othing’s more intimidating than filling a blank white computer screen. I face one every time I start an article and it stays blank longer than I’d care to mention. Especially when I approach this column. Questions always flood my mind. Should it be fun? Should I be serious? Do I thank our graphic designer Ebony again? Will it be read by anyone besides my mother? Hi, mom. This column can take 15 minutes or two hours depending on my coffee intake. Either way, I was reminded of something during the creation of this issue. LOOKatOKC has a voice. One that gets projected throughout the metro and sometimes beyond. Two developments last week gave me that reminder. Local blog Oxford Karma hung up its keyboards and said goodbye on Aug. 31. The music/culture blog accomplished a lot with a small team and pushed to elevate a lot of the same Oklahoma-based artists I see and hear. I’m a firm believer in the more voices the better. I’ll miss their energy. If you’ve never heard of Oxford Karma then go check it out. Maybe it’ll inspire you to start your own project. Do it and then find a way to tell me all about it. I’m sure creators Josh Boydston

and Zach Hale will enjoy a much deserved break. The same week another website entered the local ring, NON DOC. I met the co-owner and publisher Andrew Rice the other day at Elemental Coffee Roasters. It sounds like they also share my mission to show more than just Oklahoma City’s surface. Good luck to them. Speaking of voices, go check out our cover story with Tallows’ lead singer Josh Hogsett. Our contributor Becky Carman’s feature documents the band’s rise to become a local favorite. It goes without saying that you should make an effort to attend the band’s “Waist Deep” album release Sept. 12 at City Pres. It’ll be in the church’s empty swimming pool. Make sure to wait at least half an hour after eating before you visit the show. Good talk. I’ll see you here again in two weeks.

hen Maddie Marlow and Tae Dye warble about dumping an annoying fishing buddy out of the boat on their new album, the hilariously catchy lyrics can’t help but snare a little truth. That’s because their feisty ditty “Shut up and Fish” is loosely based on a real-life incident that took place in Dye’s home state of Oklahoma. “We took two of Tae’s guy friends — friends, by the way — fishing with us, and they just had no idea what they were doing and were talking the whole time and being annoying and trying to bust moves. So, it really did come from a real place and a true story, unfortunately,” Marlow said. “We did not catch anything because they were awful, but we did get a cool little song out of it.” Although the girls in a country song took home trophies earlier this month at the Boots
and Hearts Bass Classic fishing tournament in Ontario, Canada, the Oklahoma-Texas duo have their hearts set and lines cast for a successful country music career, with a platinum-selling breakout single, a summer of shows with Dierks Bentley and plans for a headlining tour already to the pair’s credit. Maddie & Tae — Marlow, 20, of Sugar Land, Texas, and Dye, 19, of Ada — Friday will release the hotly anticipated full-length debut album “Start Here,” via Dot Records. The duo earned songwriting credits on all 11 songs on the initial album. “That’s whenever your fans can connect: Whenever you open up your heart and talk about your life. It just makes sense, and the artists that did that (when we were) growing up were the ones that inspired us to just pursue music, to be honest and true to yourself — and we’re so grateful that we are able to do

When they attended the official release party for “Start Here,” the singer-songwriters not only received platinum plaques for “Girl in a Country Song,” but they also got to perform with one of their idols, Lee Ann Womack. “She’s one of our biggest influences and a fellow Texan … and just getting to sing with one of our heroes was the coolest part of that night,” Marlow said. “We were influenced by music that wasn’t just about boys and love and falling in love and falling out of love. You know, that story gets told all the time. So, we were constantly trying to think of subjects that we could cover that were different. … I think the Dixie Chicks and Lee Ann Womack were really great about that thing, just not telling the same story over and over again. “This is basically our life story for the past five years, and you know, there’s a lot more to life than falling in and out of love.” COUNTRY SOUNDS The up-and-comers croon hopefully about embracing the future on “Waitin’ on a Plane” but let some of the trepidation about leaving home show on “Downside of Growing Up.” They profess their love for the road on “No Place Like You” and put a mean girl in her place with “Sierra.” While the lyrics are unashamedly youthful, the sound is unabashedly country, with banjos, fiddles and mandolins framing the duo’s seamless vocal harmonies. “It was really important to us to bring our roots Country duo Maddie & Tae features Sugar Land, Texas, native Maddie Marlow, left, and Ada native Tae Dye. Famed Lips recording engineer Dave Fridmann assisted several songs and a handful of the tracks were recorded in Oklahoma City’s Pink Floor Studio, a recording studio located on Wayne Coyne’s homestead. The album also features contributions from Ariel Pink, Mike Will Made-It, Sarah Barthel of Phantogram, Miley’s father Billy Ray Cyrus and Big Sean. Cyrus and Wayne Coyne have been hinting at the album via social media and interviews for several months before the surprise release. Upon first listen, it’s a spazzy and polarizing set of songs that does everything in its power to earn a Parental Advisory sticker.
In our Flaming Lips cover story in 2014, Coyne shared the two bonded after Cyrus wished him a happy birthday via Twitter. The two collaborated previously on a Beatles tribute album, “With a Little Help From My Fwends.” “I thought she was crazy and cool,” Coyne said in an interview. “And we ended up going to her show in L.A. ot every 7-Eleven is a right of passage. But you might know the one Oklahoma City-native rapper Tony LeSure (aka LTZ) is dishing about in “73120 (The Good),” a track off of his new album “Barcelona ’92.” You can hear it for yourself on NewsOK.com/blogs/middleofnowhere. After 6 p.m., the 7-Eleven off of NW 122 and Pennsylvania becomes a hangout for people too young to get into actual clubs. “There were a lot of great things happening, and then were a lot of bad things happening,” LeSure said in an interview. I met with LeSure at Elemental Coffee Roasters in August to talk about the track. Ten years ago, that 7-Eleven was LeSure’s stomping grounds. He’d walk there for candy and catch youngsters offering $10 for a pack of Swisher Sweets cigars. Patrons of the gas station would drive up and pay for one gallon of gas just to check things out. Most importantly, that’s where girls would hang out. It’s just one of the many scenes LeSure paints in “73120 (The Good),” a warm, detailed tribute to his ZIP code. The track begins with a sample from Spike Lee’s seminal film and race manifesto “Do the Right Thing.” Samuel L. Jackson’s iconic lines set the mood with a description of the summer heat. A decade ago, Oklahoma’s summer was blistering, and LeSure was getting ready for the Soul Bowl, a yearly football meeting between Millwood and Douglass high schools that also gets detailed in the song. Back then, things were simple. LeSure said the pressures of growing up hadn’t hit yet. He’d drive around with his older brother and try to keep him out of trouble with various levels of success. “It’s still feels like yesterday,” LeSure said. “I wasn’t stressed about gas money, girls or anything. Who cares if you stress out at 15?” But pressure hit hard as he started working on a follow-up album alongside Jeff “Chips” Kraetzer. They’ve been cooking “Barcelona ’92” for more than a year. It was a big learning process. Sometimes beats or album artwork would get lost. LeSure ended a long-term relationship and lost a few jobs along the way. Luckily, he was never alone. Depending on whom you ask, LeSure said, the hip-hop community is tight. LeSure’s close friend Jabee helped guide the album release process and a lot more. He also mentioned how much the hip-hop scene has grown. Open mic nights at Ordinary People Lounge and Hubbly Bubbly Hookah Cafe are leading the way. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

klahoma City’s Plaza District is usually full of action these days but rarely like this. An Oklahoma-based film crew, roughly a dozen strong, occupied a back alleyway behind No Regrets Tattoo. They were preparing to film a beat down. It’s a pivotal scene in “Nora,” a short film from the mind of director/writer Tanner Herriott. The script is loosely based on a tattoo-covered girl Herriott met a decade ago. I’ve followed this production from when he started meticulously planning months ago in Coffee Slingers to the hot August evening when his crew started shooting it. Herriott went so far as to individually sketch and watercolor many of the short film’s scenes in a notebook well before grabbing a camera.
He knew what he wanted and exactly how he was going to get it. The freelance filmmaker said he was aiming to make a stew. Not one for dinner though. A cinematic one that flexes the strengths of his cast and crew. Alone, Tanner’s like the broth. Good, but he isn’t nearly as great as when everyone is building a scene together. “We’re all just trying to make stuff,” Herriott said in an interview. “We’re all friends. Projects like this bring us closer together. We love getting to flex that creative muscle.” Having a team comes in handy. Especially when a huge trailer full of Paint N’ Cheers art supplies pulls up and parks in the middle of your set. “Cut!” Herriott said. “Stop what you’re doing and unload the truck.” The slate from “Nora.”

Even I lent a hand. Dozens of easels and canvases are cleared out of the truck. Back to work. The short’s title character (Olivia Abiassi) is laying the hurt on her estranged boyfriend (Kelly Phillips). The University of Oklahoma student is punching the tar out of a soft mattress pad, but for unsuspecting onlookers it looks like she’s bloodying her knuckles on a dude’s face. You’d be amazed at how much work it takes to capture her short scene. There’s a laundry list of questions to answer. How much light will make the alleyway feel dubious? How much apple juice should be in the whiskey bottle? How much fake blood does it take to look real? MONKEYING AROUND A couple of days later, “Nora” was about ready to wrap. I arrived at the Velvet Monkey, just a block away from where the fight scene was shot. Between all the mannequins and shampoo bottles, Nora meets Matt (Matthew Holmes) during an awkward haircut where he asks prying questions about her tattoos. The actors worked hard to make the scene not feel stale. Holmes wouldn’t hesitate asking for another take to try something different. For one scene, he gets shampooed over and over again. It was like watching Nora follow the bottle’s rinse and repeat directions for half an hour. But after four days of shooting, Herriott wrapped the set. “That’s it. I’m done,” he said with a sigh of relief. Not too much time for rest though; he’s got to catch a plane in a few hours for another gig. I guess you can only stay cut for so long. SUPPORT Herriott & Co. are trying to raise $10,000 for the short. That would cover production and post-production and Kickstarter fees, which requires 10 percent of what’s raised. DMOND — Peter Holloway’s restaurant career began with the Val-Gene Restaurant group in the 1970s and continued through the early 1990s. But the foundation of his current Holloway Restaurant Group emerged from his wife and partner Sheree’s passion for baking 20 years ago. While Peter Holloway was off in Terre Haute, Ind., opening a Pepperoni Grill concept in August 1995, Sheree was opening the doors to Cafe 501, 501 S Boulevard, in the old Ollie’s Donuts space. The idea was to offer fresh-baked bread, pastries and light fare to satisfy her newfound love of baking. What was supposed to be a humble little bakery was an instant success and quickly built up a consistent, passionate following. Cafe 501 helped build the Holloway Restaurant Group, which now includes two 501 stores, Boulevard Steakhouse, The Martini Bar, Ice House and Park House in the Myriad Gardens. The bakery is still Sheree Holloway’s favorite playground, and general manager and executive chef Gerry Reardon makes sure the Coyote Chicken and Santa Fe Sandwiches arrive just as they did 20 years ago. Meanwhile, Reardon puts out an ambitious dinner menu to go with a wine list that didn’t exist when the place opened as a lunch and breakfast emporium. “A guy named Chad Scothorn, a guy who’d been with us at Val-Gene, the Eagle’s Nest, he was talking about artisan bread, and that’s when Sheree got the bug,” Peter Holloway said. Pretty soon she was off to France to learn from the masters. She came home with an idea for the vacant corner space just blocks from their home at the time. “At first it was just the front part of the building, and the kitchen was extremely small,” Peter Holloway said. Several dining expansions followed, then the bakery was remodeled for larger commercial production in 2000. But Holloway said that was never the plan. “This all just started from Sheree’s passion for baking,” he said. “But this place was busy immediately, and the next thing you know, we go from breakfast and lunch to lunch and dinner with brunch on the weekends, a seven-day operation and then a second place in Classen Curve.” That second store opened in 2010 with a chic, modern interior, highlighting the concept’s evolution. Margaret Holloway, Peter’s sister, manages that store. CHICKEN TO HOWL FOR But originally the concept was opened for lunch and breakfast, emphasizing Sheree Holloway’s considerable passion for baked goods, including breads and pastries. proved to be prime time, thanks in no small part to the Coyote Chicken family of menu items. Caramelized onions, jalapenos and grilled chicken are what make the Coyote Chicken family of menu items howl at the moon. It’s available as a sandwich served on housemade focaccia or in a wrap with fried tortilla strips, giving cruncho-philes like me an irresistible alternative. It also comes on a salad if you’re watching your carbs or gluten intake. Reardon said a good percentage of the original menu is still represented on today’s menu by popular demand. “The Tomato-Basil soup has been here since day one, and people will order it even if it’s 105 degrees outside.” WINE SETS THE STANDARD As popular as many original items still are, the Holloways and their staff have evolved from a breakfast-and-lunch concept to lunch and dinner with brunch on the weekends. Holloway restaurants such as Boulevard Steakhouse and Park House emphasize wine, so it’s no surprise Cafe 501 does the same. Reardon said the menu needed to rise to the standards of the wine when dinner service was added, and that process is never-ending, because trends and tastes change over time. Today’s menu indicates influences from around the globe. Lunch is about the original lineup of signature sandwiches, soups and salads, plus pizzas to prove Pete’s Pepperoni Grill days haven’t been forgotten. You’ll also find deli sandwiches and street tacos. Dinner is a reflection of the restaurant’s growing maturity with items like Slow Roasted Short Ribs with Roasted-Garlic Mashed Potatoes and Cabernet Pan Gravy, Tenderloin-Stuffed Poblano Pepper, Bacon-Wrapped Meatloaf and Whiskey Pork Au Poivre. While 501 is no longer a daily breakfast stop, it offers brunch on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Signature brunch items include Huevos Rancheros, Stuffed French Toast, Chorizo Migas, Biscuit Debris and Eggs Benedict served with Black Forest Ham or crab cake. STILL PASSIONATE FOR BAKING About three years ago, Sheree Holloway’s passion for baking reached a new level when she developed a line of rustic breads, which look a lot like a sourdough but without the sour flavor because of the way the starter is stored. That’s important, because this is a bread made from natural yeast. A little of the starter dough born years ago is a part of every rustic loaf that emerges from the ovens in the 501 bakery. The loaves are sold in classic form, Walnut-Raisin Rye and Cranberry-Pecan. The bakery also produces house-made granola plus a varying selection of cookies and cupcakes. Both stores do special dinners and caterings. On Tuesday, the Classen Curve location will host a five-course tequila dinner created by chef Pancho Gallegos. The menu includes queso fundido, Shrimp Diablo, a Chimichurri filet with Avocado Risotto, salad, dessert and tequila-based cocktails. For reservations to that event, call 844-1501. The original concept’s 20th anniversary is a great time to see how it’s progressed over the years — and snatch a loaf of rustic bread to-go. Each store is open seven days a week. For specific store hours, reservations and full menu details, go online to www.cafe501.com.

Sonic carhops ready for skating competition

S
ome of the best skating carhops in the country were practicing their jumps and spins in the parking lot of Sonic Corp.’s Bricktown headquarters in August to prepare for Sonic’s annual carhop skate-off finals. Six carhops from Sonic stores across the nation are selected each year for the skating competition and win cash prizes, new roller skates as well as the title of best-skating carhop. Carhop finalists Alex Clack, who did not want to give his age but said he was “old,” works at an Edmond Sonic, delivering orders on wheels with

flourishes like jumping curbs and dipping under the order screens. “If a customer is in a convertible and has their music up, I just might come out tapping my feet to the music on my skates,” Clack said. He mostly taught himself how to skate while working at Sonic and now teaches his co-workers. “It’s part of the Sonic culture,” he said. “I tell people if they can walk, they can skate.” Dawson Snow, a Sonic carhop from Greenbrier, Tenn., is the only woman in this year’s group of finalists.
During her two years working at Sonic, she has honed her skating skills using YouTube tutorials. In her audition video for the Sonic skate-off, she jumped over a trash can. It’s optional for Sonic carhops to skate, but Snow said delivering orders on wheels earns her better tips. “People like to see us on the skates and it makes work fun,” she said. — Brianna Bailey, for LOOKatOKC

Plaza Mayor incubator tenants learn tips for business, hope to grow

H
oping for a boost in sales, Lorena Solis moved her Western wear and saddlery business from a flea market on SW 44 to a booth at the El Parian marketplace at Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads this spring. Solis’ business, El Charro Grumete, sells everything from horse saddles and lassos to the flashy belt buckles and leather boots favored by “charros,” cowboys who compete in Mexican rodeo events, called “charreada.” “Business has been good; we’ve had a lot more sales here,” Solis said through a translator. Solis said she has also learned a few tips for managing her business since she moved in, like a

system for taking inventory, something she had not done in the past. Situated on the ground floor of the former Dillard’s at Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads, El Parian is Oklahoma City’s first retail business incubator. The hope is that the businesses in the mall will eventually become successful enough to lease storefronts in the mall, filling it with new shops, said Robert Ruiz, marketing manager for Plaza Mayor at the Crossroads. Tenants can take advantage of business workshops and also get one-on-one consulting sessions. The marketplace has booth space for 53
vendors. So far businesses in El Parian range from jewelry, perfume and clothing shops to an exterminator. It’s been slow going getting the spots filled, and El Parian is about 26 percent leased right now. Ruiz hopes to bump occupancy up to 33 percent in time for the holiday shopping season. Plaza Mayor is trying to lure more shoppers to the mall on weekends with a mix of programming that includes live music and festivals. The mall will host a Fiestas Patrias celebration beginning at noon Sept. 13 that will include Mexican wrestling matches, food and live music. The mall has continued to attract a mix of new

shops and restaurants, many with a Latin flavor. There are snack stands that sell churros and empanadas as well as boutiques with bright displays of quinceañera dresses. The mall is also seeing success in adding many new, nontraditional tenants, Ruiz said. An Oklahoma City charter school, Lighthouse Charter School, plans to move into the mall for the 2016-2017 school year. “Getting educational uses into the mall will be important because it will add foot traffic with kids and parents,” Ruiz said. A bilingual beauty school also recently opened on ground floor of the mall. Integris Health has also just opened a new family clinic in the mall with bilingual staff. Dora Ochoa also moved her business, Edgel Joyeria Y Novedades, into El Parian in April. She also previously had a booth in the main mall. The shop sells jewelry, as well as clothing like white suits and dresses for childrens’ First Communions and other special occasions. Today, most clientele are mostly from the Hispanic community, but she hopes that changes as traffic in the mall grows, she said. “We want everyone to come,” she said. California burger chain fans are hoping to lure one to Oklahoma

fter moving to Southern California in my late 20s, eating at In-N-Out Burger for the first time was a cultural initiation of sorts. The white cups with their red palm tree motif and the secret menu — explained to me by a native Californian in a hushed tone of reverence — seemed exotic to a girl from a fly-over state. Ordering fries “animal style,” that’s with melted cheese, grilled onions and a mix of pickle relish and Thousand Island dressing known in In-N-Out jargon as “spread,” was to conjure the spirit of Jeff Spicoli from “Fast Times at Ridgemont High,” like you just crawled off of the beach, or out of a smoke-filled VW microbus. From Huntington Beach to Anaheim, each Double-Double I ate was uniform in its deliciousness. The bun always toasted to the same shade of golden brown, like a valley girl fresh from the tanning salon and the cheese always melted just so. I moved back to Oklahoma in 2010, doomed, it seemed, to live out my 30s Double-Double-less.
As luck would have it, I returned to Oklahoma in the middle of a burger renaissance. We now have Five Guys Burgers and Fries, Smashburger, Freddy’s Frozen Custard and Steak Burgers, as well as a some local favorites like Tucker’s Onion Burgers and Nic’s Grill. The “Better Burger” craze, they called it. Even In-N-Out is expanding its reach during this burger arms race. In 2010, the family-owned, Irvine, Calif.-based company announced plans to expand into north Texas and build a distribution center there. In-N-Out does not freeze its products and has long vowed not to expand further than one day’s drive from company distribution centers. A Dallas distribution center would certainly put Oklahoma City on the radar screen for In-N-Out expansion, I hoped. Like me, Oklahoma City resident Jeff Nokes, left a little piece of his heart, and maybe his stomach, in California. He founded the In-N-Out Burger OKC page on Facebook, which has garnered more than 3,500 likes. Nokes urges people who have liked the page on Facebook to send regular emails to In-N-Out’s corporate office, urging them to bring the chain to Oklahoma City. An actor and entertainer, Nokes lived in Southern California from 1985 to 1994, and quickly became an In-N-Out devotee. “The first thing that was cool to me was kind of the laid-back way of doing everything,” Nokes said. “They greet you with a ‘hey, how’s it going?’ ” In-N-Out also has not sold any franchises and all restaurants are corporate owned. “Everything is made fresh and it’s spotless inside,” Nokes said. “That corporate nature keeps the quality up.” Even with Nokes’ urging, he and I could still be driving to Dallas for our Double-Double fix for at least a few more years. In response to my inquiries, Carl Van Fleet, vice president of planning and development for In-NOut, said the company won’t be in Oklahoma any time soon. “While we hope to make it to Oklahoma someday, our slow growth plans will prevent us from getting there in the near-term future,” he wrote in an email. Although Nokes’ Facebook page hasn’t seemed to speed things up any, a little hype never hurt things. “We are honored and sincerely flattered that the page even exists and the comments definitely caught our attention,” Van Fleet said. — Brianna Bailey, for LOOKatOKC

Western Avenue is throwing its hat in the yearly street and music festival ring with the emergence of WestFest. The free festival takes place Sept. 19 from noon to 10 p.m. Tulsa’s Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey is headlining alongside a slew of Okie acts such as Tallows, Beau Jennings and the Tigers and DEERPEOPLE. JFJO is kicking off its fall tour at WestFest in support of a new comic book and album, “The Battle for Earth.”
The festival will be held between NW 41st to NW 43rd with food trucks lining the new streetscape which should be clear of construction. A beer garden featuring local breweries will be located next to the Barrel, 4308 N Western Ave. Although there will be food trucks, WestFest aims to promote the existing bars, restaurants and retail. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

SEPTEMBER 4-27 “Dislocated Histories” by David Crismon at JRB Art at The Elms during September. The exhibits run through Sept. 27. In creating his work David Crismon digitally alters large reproduced images of art, splicing them into fractured tiles before painting them onto metal. The works become translations of photographed history that has become marred and transformed with the erosion of time.
Currently a professor of Fine Arts at Oklahoma Christian University and a lecturer at the University of Central Oklahoma, Crismon teaches art history, design history, painting and drawing. His works have been exhibited at 20 solo and 30 group exhibitions nationally including the Michael Berger Gallery, Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Craighead Green Gallery, Dallas, Texas, Mainsite Contemporary Art Gallery in Norman and JRB Gallery, Oklahoma City.
