A whole new State Fair BY ERIECH TAPIA Staff Writer etapia@oklahoman.com

rganizers of the 111th Oklahoma State Fair are hoping this year’s “Bigger, Better, Best” theme brings a host of new attractions that appeal to the next generation of fairgoers. The fair of today is very different from a time when marketing was mainly posters stapled across town and 30-second commercial ads. Now social and digital media are how fair organizers are communicating with younger audiences. “We are having to engage the younger audience,” said Scott Munz, vice president of marketing and public relations. “We are very forward-thinking in terms of the state fair.” The theme will be played out with the largest portable Ferris wheel in North America, which will be trucked into State Fair Park erected in the center for all to see. It will be almost 60 feet taller than the Wheeler Ferris Wheel along the Oklahoma River. “This is a monumental year for the fair,” said Gina Burchfiel, vice president of the fair. “So many new things will be going on this year at the fair.” After years of construction, the 279,000-square-foot Bennett Event Center will be open for the fair. Guests can enjoy a more climate-controlled fair experience. “The Bennett Event Center will be a great place to come in and sit in the

air conditioning and enjoy the fair,” Burchfiel said. “It is going to be the crown jewel for indoor space at the 2017 fair.” The fair runs every day starting at 8 a.m. Sept. 14-24. Buildings at State Fair Park open at 10 a.m. On weekdays, the carnival will open at 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday. More commercial vendors and more food options will be inside the Bennett Event Center, and the car show is making a return indoors taking up

one-third of the trade show floor. “The auto show will be back in its full glory,” Burchfiel said. Munz said this year’s fair will be better organized and buildings will follow a specific theme with what relates inside. “We have always been sold out on commercial vendors during our fair,” Burchfiel said. Fairgoers will find that many attractions have moved this year. “We tried keeping some of our tried-and-true-traditional shows,” Burchfiel said. The state fair has teamed up with the Oklahoma Department of Food, Forestry and Agriculture to bring

3,600-square-foot of retail space for Made in Oklahoma products. “It is who we are. We want to promote Oklahoma,” Burchfiel said. Families can experience history this year with a traveling exhibit about President John F. Kennedy. The display will include hundreds of items from his life and presidency, including one of his presidential limousines. “We have not been able to do this before because we could not put it outside,” Burchfiel said. The exhibit will be a separate ticketed event and costs $5 for those 12 years and older, with several discounts available on varying days. Other new exhibits will include a Live Shark Encounter, where fairgoers can learn about conservation efforts. Panfilov’s Performing Pets also will be making their debut at the fair, along with a new cooking show. The Vintage American Glamping Cooking Show will showcase an interactive 1959 Airstream Trailer and what a camping site would have looked like in the 1950s. “We are always going to make sure to bring our history and culture to the Oklahoma State Fair,” Burchfiel said. Changes to the special promotion days are occurring this year, with Monday becoming the day for discounts to members of the military. Discounts include free gate admission and discounts to the JFK exhibit and for rides on the Sky Eye Wheel. Tuesday will become Dr Pepper $2 Tuesday, with gate admission, rides, JFK exhibit, Sky Eye Wheel and select food items costing $2 each.

State Fair touts bigger rides, better promotions BY KAELYNN KNOERNSCHILD Staff Writer

hock-full of quintessential fair foods, rides galore and ample entertainment, the Oklahoma State Fair kicks off Sept. 14, enticing this year’s potential fairgoers with new attractions and special discounts. The fair, which runs until Sept. 24, will feature the largest portable Ferris wheel in North America, helping to inspire this year’s theme — Bigger Better Best. Rising to 155 feet, the Sky Eye Wheel is the largest Ferris wheel to visit the Oklahoma State Fair. Traces of the 2017 theme can be found in the quality of attractions and fair’s colorful logo featuring the Sky Eye Wheel, said Scott Munz, Oklahoma State Fair vice president of marketing and public relations. “We have a bigger Ferris wheel, better attractions than ever before, resulting in the best Oklahoma state fair ever,” Munz said. In addition to the towering wheel, the fair will have a John F. Kennedy exhibition, showcasing the limo the

president took from the White House to Dulles International Airport the day he was killed, among other memorabilia. People looking to enjoy the fair on a budget can take advantage of promotions, including discounted admission and coupons, which are valid at vendors throughout the event. Fairgoers have four opportunities to visit for free or at a discounted rate. People attending opening day receive $2 gate admission. Dr Pepper $2 Tuesday, Sept. 19, will also feature $2 outside gate admission and various $2 rides. On Sept. 18, military personnel and their spouses with military ID get in free as part of the Military Monday promotion. Senior Citizens’ Day, Sept. 20, provides free admission for senior citizens with ID. Both groups also receive discounted exhibition and Ferris wheel tickets. The purpose of the promotions, Munz said, is to encourage people to visit the fair on days when it’s typically less crowded. Last year, about 800,000 people attended the Oklahoma State Fair, a decrease from pre-

vious years, he said. He blames the hot temperatures and bouts of rain last year for preventing people from visiting. Typical attendance is at least 900,000 or more, and Munz said he hopes to see attendance numbers rise and the weather cooperates this year. The fair’s coupon book, offering more than $250 in savings, is available for $5 outside gate ticket booths, at information booths and at the Jim Norick Arena Box Office, Munz said. “We are all on some sort of budget, so why not take advantage of our discount days and special promotions?” Munz said. “There are certainly ways to stretch your dollar at the Oklahoma State Fair and we encourage everyone to educate themselves on how to make the most of their family’s budget.” Munz, who has now helped coordinate 29 Oklahoma State Fairs, said he and his team strive to bring new attractions each year, making each fair better than its predecessor. “I really think we accomplished that this year,” he said. “I think we’ve hit a home run.”

‘Follow Your Heart’ features many familiar faces Disney On Ice BY JESSICA PHILLIPS Staff Writer

D

isney On Ice is heading into its 30th year at the state fair with “Follow Your Heart.” The show will bring beloved characters new and old, including aerial acts that allow Rapunzel and Ariel to gracefully drift above the ice. “It gets one of the biggest reactions every night,” said Tristan Josef, company manager. With more than 60 characters from several Disney and Disney Pixar movies, the show offers entertainment for all ages. “It’s a compilation show this year,” said Scott Munz, fair spokesman. “It’s a faster-paced show that touches a lot of different bases instead of just one theme.” Josef said there’s definitely something for everyone in this show. Characters from “Finding Dory,” “Inside Out” and “Toy Story” will glide across the ice. And from “Frozen,” Elsa and Anna, with Olaf and Kristoff, also will have a story to tell. “Frozen” had its own Disney On Ice show in 2015, but remains a crowdfavorite. “The kids still go crazy for that,” Josef said. Audiences will see classics such as Mickey Mouse, Minnie Mouse, the princesses and princes.

Forty-five skaters from at least seven countries form the cast. Josef said most have backgrounds in competitive figure skating. The first leg of “Follow Your Heart” finished this summer after 10 months on tour. Oklahoma City is the first stop on the next leg of the tour, which extends to mid-April 2018 with 10-12 shows most weeks. “We’re really excited to start a new tour,” Josef said. “Walt Disney’s Snow White On Ice, featuring Mickey Mouse” was the fair’s first Disney On Ice show in 1987. Snow White brought greater attendance than previous ice shows, such as the Ice Capades, according to an article published in The Oklahoman on Nov. 19, 1987. “It’s been popular ever since it started here,” Munz said. “It’s a great compliment to the family component of the Oklahoma State Fair.” The fair shows open at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 14, with a $4 discount for upper-level seating. Ticket prices range from $11 to $45 at the Jim Norick Arena. Tickets for shows Sept. 15-19 range from $15 to $45, and tickets purchased on or before Sept. 13 include free gate admission. Children ages 2 and younger do not require tickets, but must be held by a ticket holder.

hen people think of the State Fair there’s one deliciously fun part that surely comes to mind among others: food. This year’s list of new and unique foods features fried foods, unusual combinations and food on a stick, in addition to other fun foods for fairgoers to try. Breakfast cereals are being repurposed as breading. Netterfield’s Popcorn & Lemonade will have Frosted Flakes chicken on-a-stick, and Diamond Dawgs will bring its Wonder Boy, a Cap’n Crunch battered corn dog. Other items on a stick include The Pork Council’s pork chop on-a-stick

and Chef Ray’s Street Eats chicken and waffles on-a-stick. Chef Ray’s will also have deep fried banana pudding for those looking for fried dessert options. The Urb Express will feature two fried desserts: deep fried pineapple raisin bread pudding bites and funnel cake fries. Food vendors are also getting creative with burgers this year. Harvell Concessions is using Honey Buns as the bun for its bacon cheeseburger. Layne Concessions is putting macaroni and cheese on a burger, and Porky’s is bringing interesting combinations with its peanut butter and jalapeno burger and doughnut burger. Other new foods to try include the unicorn crepe and Monte Cristo crepe from Coco Flow, macaroni and cheese with toppings ranging from roasted pork and BBQ sauce to a spidershaped hot dog from MacTastic, and baconwrapped Brussels sprouts and zucchini from The Bacon Habit. J.P. Wilson, co-owner of St. Paddy Cakes, is bringing his food truck to the fair for the second year in a row. His food truck is based in Oklahoma City, and he said adding local food trucks to the fair gives it a more local feel.

THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

“We have a lot of people that come from all over the state that have never seen a lot of the food trucks before because so many of them just stay right here around Oklahoma City and the metro area,” Wilson said. “And so it’s great exposure, and I know last year we got a lot of great feedback from everybody around the state.” One of the items St. Paddy Cakes is bringing is the Twinkie bacon cheese slider. Wilson said the cream inside the Twinkie combines with the cheese and bacon to taste amazing. Nicholas Johnson, owner of the Sweet Shop, said he has been coming to the state fair for about 10 years and this year will have two locations on the fairgrounds. Based in Columbus, Ohio, the Sweet Shop goes to state fairs and special events across the country. Johnson said the Oklahoma State Fair is his favorite special event of the year. “The food environment at the fair is top notch,” Johnson said. “There’s no other special event or fair in the country that I see producing so much delicious food and new products.” The Sweet Shop brings a different cinnamon roll to the fair every year, and Johnson said this

year they will be bringing back the red velvet cinnamon roll by popular demand. He said they also have something new for this year’s fair. Their bacon cheddar meatloaf cupcakes are making their world premier at the fair. Topped with mashed potato icing and bacon and cheddar sprinkles, Johnson said he hopes everyone loves the meatloaf cupcake. “Everyone at the fair allows us, and pushes us, to do bigger and better things every year we go to the fair,” Johnson said. All of these fun foods and more will be available at this year’s fair.

Made in Oklahoma Store gets a lot more room 10S

BY NICK SARDIS Staff Writer

Since 2014, the Made in Oklahoma Store has provided fairgoers the opportunity to buy various products and help Oklahoma businesses in the process. This year, the store returns to the Oklahoma State Fair, bigger and better than in previous years. Since the store’s debut, it has never looked like an actual store. In its first year, it was a small, 300-square-foot booth. It has increased in size each year, but it had its challenges. “It was always crowded,” said Gina Burchfiel, vice president of the Oklahoma State Fair. “We knew we needed to be bigger than the 300 square feet when we started.” The opportunity for an improved store arose with the opening of the Bennett Event Center in January. The event center is more than 200,000 square feet, THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

providing an abundant amount of space for the revamped Made in Oklahoma Store, which is now more than 3,000 square feet, Burchfiel said. Burchfiel said the extra space will help fairgoers have a better shopping experience. “We wanted the public to be able to have enough room to really come in and have a store experience — not just walk by a booth,” she said. The Oklahoma Department of Agriculture, Food and Forestry launched the Made in Oklahoma program in the 1980s, said Tandy Kidd, the department’s marketing coordinator. Kidd said the store is a way for the Made in Oklahoma program to fulfill its mission to assist and support Oklahoma businesses. “The mission of MIO (Made in Oklahoma) is to build a brand awareness for the (Oklahoma) companies,” Kidd said. “This is a great way for us to get local companies in front of the public where they can actually go and help support local people.” Burchfiel said the Made in Oklahoma program and the state fair are able to benefit from each other because both share a mission to support Oklahomans. “This was a very natural relationship,” she said. “The Department of Agriculture already had a relationship with a lot of the individual vendors that fit the description of locally grown, locally produced, locally created.” “It makes sense for the fair to partner with the Department of Agriculture to reach those people to help those vendors grow their business and receive some additional marketing recognition and community recognition.” Kidd said he thinks this year will be a success for businesses selling products at the store. “With it being in the Bennet Event Center, everyone wants to see the new building. We feel like with us (the store) being in there, it’s going to be a great way for us to promote our MIO companies,” he said. “We’ve kind of created a destination spot for people to come and find products that are made here in Oklahoma.” Kidd said nearly 50 Oklahoma companies are featured in the store this year and a variety of items will be available, including food, furniture and clothing. Bedré Fine Chocolate, of Davis, is one of the companies participating, as well as Billy Goat Ice Company, of Stillwater, and Always Greener, a synthetic grass company in Oklahoma City that sells artificial grass door mats during the fair. For those who like to buy particular products at the store each year, Burchfiel said that many of the same items are still available at the store. “This just helps us have enough elbow room for some real serious shopping to happen.”

Fair shopping promises to offer ‘anything you can imagine’ BY ANNA BAUMAN Staff Writer

S

hoppers flocking to the Oklahoma State Fair can expect to find a wide array of products this year. “Anything you can imagine, I’m sure we will sell it at the fair,” said Suzy Cason, state fair senior manager of space sales. Shopping options promise to be more glamorous and convenient than years past with an exhibit space that will make its debut at this year’s fair. The Bennett Event Center, a 279,000-square-foot space, will hold more than 220 shopping and food vendors, plus the auto show. The space was completed in January after having been under construction for the past two state fairs. Now, the Bennett Event Center will connect smoothly with the other two shopping spaces, the Centennial and the Pavilion buildings. “I think it will improve it tenfold,” Cason said. “You’ll notice if you come out to the fair, the flow of the buildings and shopping is going to be so much better because we’re going to use the Pavilion, the Centennial building and the Bennett, and you can just flow straight through all three of them.” Another improvement is the clean and professional look of the shopping outlets, Cason said. Each vendor must meet high display standards, such as having flooring and a semi-permanent back display. “I think the setup is going to be nicer and cleaner,” Cason said. “It’ll be top-notch vendors — it’s going to be beautiful.” About 600 indoor and outoor vendors will populate the three exhibit spaces. Items within the broad categories of lawn and garden, beauty and health, jewelry, home repair, home appliances, lotion and soaps, home furnishings, clothing, boutiques, and more will be sold. Most vendors offer a special fair deal so that fairgoers can take advantage of cheaper prices. “In all three of the buildings we will have hot tubs, swimming pools, mattresses, tornado shelters,” Cason said. “Light up LED tennis shoes, puzzles, jewelry, games for kids, belts, purses, wallets, sunglasses — probably just about everything.” In addition to traditional products, there are some items that can only be found at the fair, like homemade dog treats, old time saltwater taffy and hand-poured, triple-scented candles. “There’s a few things you just can’t get anywhere,” Cason said. “We have homemade dog treats — I look forward to those — I only get them here at the fair.” THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

The Made in Oklahoma store, new this year, will carry official Oklahoma State Fair merchandise such as T-shirts, hats, trinkets and lapel pins. Beyond that, the store will offer products like home decor, soaps, jellies, beef jerky and an assortment of other local products made right here in the state. “I think that every single person needs to go to the Made in Oklahoma Store,” Cason said. “It’s beautiful — 3,000 square-feet, brand new this year. That’s probably going to be my favorite thing this year.” Cason said she is convinced that shopping is the third most popular attraction at the fair, behind food and carnival activities. Vendors typically see successful sales, she said. “It seems to be pretty popular,” Cason said. “We have some really loyal vendors that come back every year. They’re happy, they’re excited, so they must be making the sales.” SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

ive music and free concerts will accompany the sights and sounds of the Oklahoma State Fair. Musicians — local and otherwise — will play on stages across State Fair Park. The Adventure Road Entertainment Stage, Bandshell Stage, the Patio and Jim Norick Arena will all hold live performances. After the price of admission to the fair, all shows are free to attend except for the concerts at the Xtreme Bulls pro rodeo event in the Jim Norick Arena, said Scott Munz, vice president of marketing and public relations. The Adventure Road Entertainment Stage in the Entertainment Plaza features some of the state fair’s more prominent acts. One performance will take place on the stage each day, bringing artists of varying genres. The 11 acts on the Adventure Road Stage, in order of their performance date, will be William Michael Morgan, The Oak Ridge Boys, BeatleMania Live!, La Mafia, Hawk Nelson & Zach Williams, Gary Puckett and the Union Gap, Elvis Extravaganza, Chase Bryant, Tony! Toni! Tone!, Dennis DeYoung: The Music of STYX, and Sugar Free Allstars. Munz booked the Adventure Road Entertainment Stage acts through David Snowden at Triangle Talent. Snowden, the CEO of the Kentucky-based agency, said fairs across the country, especially the Oklahoma State Fair, focus on having a diverse lineup appealing to different ages and preferences. “Diversity is the name of the game because you have such a melting pot of people that come,” Snowden said. “We try to have something for everyone.”

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

Weekday performances are scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m. Beatlemania Live! and Dennis DeYoung: The Music of Styx, which make up the two Saturday concerts, are expected to start at 8 p.m. The two Sunday performances, La Mafia and Sugar Free Allstars, will go on stage at 3 p.m. Local artists will perform daily on the Bandshell Stage, on the corner of Stagecoach and Land Rush, from 11 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. Visitors can listen to a variety of music genres from live performers and watch dance routines, clogging, poetry reading, choirs and drama acts, Munz said. Musicians will also perform at The Patio. The stage is nestled between the Capital City Café and Oklahoma Expo Hall. Munz said admission to the two Xtreme Bulls concerts, featuring country artists Gary Allan and Josh Turner, on Sept. 22 and 23 comes with the extra ticket price of attending the bull riding event. Allan will take the stage after bull riding action that starts at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 22. Box seat tickets are $38. Upper level seating costs $30 for adults and $25 for children. Turner will perform after bull riding action that starts at 7:30 p.m. Sept. 23. Saturday box seats are $35 while upper level tickets cost $27 for adults and $22 for children. Children younger than 12 are eligible for the children’s ticket prices, and adult tickets cover anyone 12 and older. Children age 2 and under get in free sitting on an adult’s lap. “The Oklahoma State Fair has really upped their budget (and) has improved immensely,” Snowden said. “They’ve raised their budget bringing in bigger acts each year, and in the rodeo, that has become very, very successful.”

Fair features wide range of rides new and familiar BY DYLAN JACKSON Staff Writer

Rides and games play a major factor in what makes the Oklahoma State Fair so special, said Frank Zaitshik, who owns and operates Wade Shows. The state fair runs Sept. 14-24 at the State Fair Park. Bigger, Better, Best is the theme of this year’s fair, and Zaitshik believes that they can deliver on that promise with 75 different rides, both new and old. It starts with the largest portable Ferris wheel in North America, the “Sky Eye Wheel.” At 155 feet tall, the attraction is so large that it takes seven tractor-trailers to move. It has 36 gondolas, which can hold six people each, adorn the 15-story wheel. And though there will be many new attractions, many old favorites will return this year. One familiar ride is the RC-48, a 160 foot highspeed roller-coaster with tight banks and turns. “I always say that by the time you’re scared, it’s already over,” Zaitshik said. In addition to the Sky Eye Wheel, there will be plenty of ride options for families with small children such as a kiddie tractor ride. Zaitshik said families can

16S

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

plan ahead by visiting the Wade Shows website, wadeshows.com/attractions, to find out about height requirements for rides. That way, they can decide whether its best to buy an unlimited Carnival Ride Armband or purchase individual tickets. Zaitshik also puts a large emphasis on safety. He cautions fairgoers to use common sense and understand their limits. “The biggest reasons for accidents are rider and operator error,” Zaitshik said. And if a family really wants to save money, Sept. 19, is “$2 Dr. Pepper Tuesday." All carnival rides will be $2 and most food vendors will have a $2 item on the menu. In addition to rides, there will be dozens of traditional games of all kinds from basketball to water races. Better prizes come with a higher difficulty. On average, Zaitshik says, games return from 25 to 30 percent of the money it makes in prizes. All in all, Zaitshik believes the most important thing is for fairgoers to have a fun, memorable time and enjoy the fair. “As a person that has a range of experience in state fairs and major state events,” said Zaitshik, “I believe the Oklahoma State Fair is one of the top events in the country.”

JFK exhibit included in this year’s fair BY ALYSSA SPERRAZZA Staff Writer

A childhood hobby has grown to a quarter of a million dollar collection for Jim Warlick, owner of the JFK Exhibition heading to the 2017 Oklahoma State Fair. “When I was a kid, I remember getting a little John F. Kennedy bust in Washington D.C.,” Warlick said. “That was in eighth grade, and now I own a gift shop in D.C.” More specifically, Warlick owns a gift shop located right across the street from one of the most famous houses in the world — The White House. “I have had political memorabilia stores since 1989,” Warlick said. “There are stores today in Washington, Baltimore, Chicago and Boston. We have six stores total.” Not many can claim they own more than 1.2 million campaign buttons, some originals from 1896, but that’s just the sort of thing Warlick loves. And he’s not afraid to admit JFK is his favorite. “Kennedy has always fascinated me,” Warlick said. “I was in the sixth grade when that day happened, Nov. 22, 1963. Kennedy’s death had such an impact on me in terms of following politics and starting to collect political memorabilia.” Scott Munz, vice president of marketing and public relations for State Fair Park, said it’s the first time the fair has had an exhibition like this. “I’m looking forward to it because it’s a piece of history,”

THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

Munz said. It will include a full replica of Air Force One during the Kennedy administration, a full replica of the Oval Office decorated as it was during his presidency, audiotapes, videos, pictures and replicas of clothing and artifacts that belonged to the Kennedys. “We have an audio tape of Lyndon Johnson calling Jackie Kennedy, offering his condolences,” Warlick said. “We do an oral history throughout the exhibition. We tape recorded people who tell us about that day they got the news that Kennedy passed away.” “We have one of Jackie’s bathing suits, JFK’s shaving kit, shoes Jackie wore to Paris ... we even had the Oval Office built by Warner Brother Studio in California.” Warlick’s collection doesn’t only contain artifacts tied to JFK. “I brought in the Reagan presidential limousine, one of the three he had,” Warlick said. “We have multiple First Lady gown replicas ... and we have a second plane.” The size of the exhibition is something the state fair hasn’t been able to consider until now, with more space available after the opening of the Bennett Event Center. “We look at what’s out there available to fairs and what can fit in the space we have and our budgets,” Munz said. “We decided on JFK exhibition because, now with the Bennett Event Center and the move-

ment of some vendors from other buildings, it freed up the space needed.” Munz said the exhibition was just under 15,000 square feet and is “the largest exhibit brought in in recent history.” Warlick’s collection initially was shown at a museum in Branson, Missouri. It was open for five years before, in 2007, Warlick decided to take

his collection on the road so more people could experience it. The exhibition will open Sept. 24 and admission prices for ages 12 and up are $4. Any child age 11 or under is admitted free with paid adult. Exhibition times are Sunday-Thursday 10:00 a.m. to 8:30 p.m. and Friday-Saturday 10 a.m. to 9:30 p.m.

Fair’s Senior Day finds a permanent home BY MEG BRITTON-MEHLISCH Staff Writer

After 41 years, Senior Day is settling down. This year “There’s No Place Like Okla’Home’a” is the Senior Day theme, in honor of the event’s move into a permanent space in the Modern Living Building on Sept. 20. The event, which allows fairgoers 55 and older to enter the fair for free, includes a day of activities. These activities were housed in Carriage Hall until 2014 when the building was demolished with the MAPS 3 fairground renovations. Senior Day was located in the Capital City Theater for the last two years. Senior Day committee member Arrianne Rodriguez said she remembers when the planning committee learned that Senior Day would be settling in the Modern Living building. A committee member reacted with the line, “there’s no place like home.” The sentiment was apt. The planning committee adapted the quote, originally from “The Wizard of Oz,” with an Oklahoma twist and this year’s theme was born. A little piece of home Cindy Dimit, another committee member, spent her childhood at state fairs across the nation. She said she understands what draws people back to the fair — and Senior Day. “A lot of the seniors come back year after year to see us,” Dimit said. “It is kind of a little piece of home. It’s a ritual. It’s something you look forward to because there’s nothing else quite like it.” Part of that ritual comes from Senior Day’s schedule. Each Senior Day is filled to the brim with activities and entertainers. “You can spend the whole day sitting at a table or chair and see something different about every 15 or 20 minutes,” Dimit said. “It gets pretty fast paced.” 18S

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

From 8 a.m. until 6:30 p.m., this year’s program includes free health screenings, line dancing, tai chi, return performances by The Okie Stompers, The Yellow Rose Dinner Theater and Music Central, Men’s Acapella Chorus. For seniors looking to commemorate their trip to “Oz,” there will be a photo booth with live characters and props. One of the most well-loved activities is Oklahoma State Fair Senior Royalty contest. Hosted like the “Newlywed Game,” couples compete for the title of Mr. and Mrs. Senior Day Royalty. “We get a lot of repeat seniors who have known about it for years and won contests and titles,” Rodriguez said.“There’s a royalty contest, years ago we had a spelling bee and we had a game show. They really enjoy coming back and letting their presence be known

if they’ve had a prior royalty title, and we definitely love to recognize them.” Repeat visitors will notice that the event’s new home has given another Senior Day favorite some space to shine. “We have more vendors in there this year,” said Melinda Parsons, Oklahoma State Fair director of Special Events and Attractions. The new building "gives us a little more breathing room. It was so crowded, even in the Carriage Hall, especially when you get all the vendors and wheelchairs in there.” Some of the new additions to the list of vendors have Dorothy’s beloved Toto in mind. Dimit said several pet-related businesses will make an appearance this year. For more information about this year’s Senior Day, visit www.okstatefair.com/ content/senior-day. Fair reaches out through community efforts SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

BY NURIA MARTINEZ-KEEL Staff Writer

A

s visitors flood in, the Oklahoma State Fair plans to give back. Fair executives oversee annual community outreach programs that support educational efforts, creative arts initiatives and special events. Â

THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

Trying new things Nancy Nortz, creative programs senior manager, said the state fair conducts educational outreach for children through Academy School Tours. The fair’s program invites schools and home school groups from across the state to bring thirdto fifth-grade students to learning centers at the fair. Participation in the program is free. Each home school group must have at least 12 children. Registration opens Aug. 1 and ends Sept. 6. The 2017 Academy School Tours will take place Sept. 19-22. At the learning centers, students can play musical instruments with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, try soap making and metalsmithing at the frontier experience, observe woodworking and robotics, and visit livestock and horse barns. “There are so many educational opportunities at the fair always, but this organizes them where (students) can take advantage of all the educational opportunities,” Nortz said. “Their teacher can come and guide them through as many educational opportunities as they can fit in.” Cash for college The Oklahoma State Fair Scholarship makes up another educational effort, which has assisted college-bound students since 2002, said Scott Munz, vice president of marketing and public relations. More than 100 students applied for the scholarship this year before Munz and state fair Vice President Gina Burchfiel selected 20 for interviews. Ten students were awarded a one-time $2,500 scholarship based on GPA, extracurricular activities, leadership, community involvement and interview performance. “On paper, (the students) read very similar,” Munz said. “We decided very early on a part of the process would be to see how a person handles themselves in an in-person interview. “Some things you can only determine sitting in a room talking with a person.” Blowing their own horn The state fair has also focused on community outreach through creative arts and special events. Middle and high school bands from across Oklahoma will

compete in the Band Day Parade. The event will take place at 10:30 a.m. Sept. 18 on General Pershing Boulevard at State Fair Park. Judges watching the parade will evaluate bands, drumlines, drum majors, color guards, twirlers and mascots from schools of various sizes. Winners of each category will receive cash prizes. Registration to compete is free, and the deadline to enter is Sept. 6. Down to an art The state fair has offered competitions for visual arts students, as well. Teachers submitted up to 20 pieces of art per school for the Oklahoma Student Art Exhibition. Judging was completed in the spring, and 900 pieces of art from students of all ages have been admitted to the exhibition. Artwork in the exhibition will be on display in the Oklahoma Contemporary Arts Center for the full run of the fair. Schools with the most merit in the exhibit will receive $100 Hobby Lobby gift cards, Nortz said. Students who win individual awards earn their school an additional $100 gift card from Hobby Lobby. The Visual Arts Scholarship Event admitted the top 20 middle and high school submissions for display at a ticketed event in the Special Events Center at 6:30 p.m. Sept. 12. These art pieces will also be available for auction at the event. Part of the event’s proceeds will go to the 20 VASE artists, and the rest of the funds will contribute to visual arts scholarships, according to the state fair website. Philanthropic organizations will receive donations from three creative arts charity contests. Pieces submitted to the needlecraft competition will be donated to Infant Crisis Services. Threads of Compassion will receive knitted or crocheted scarves to give to victims of sexual violence. A quilting competition will contribute to Quilts of Valor, which donates quilts to veterans affected by war. Contestants can register for each of these competitions for free through Aug. 15. Certified 501(c)(3) nonprofit organizations can also request donations from the Oklahoma State Fair, provided they align with specified guidelines.

11 THINGS TO DO

OKC cook rises to her 33rd year of contests 11

BY ERIECH TAPIA Staff Writer etapia@oklahoman.com

It all began in July with Pam Kloiber searching farmers markets for the freshest fruits and crafting up recipes for her 33rd year of competitions at the Oklahoma State Fair. Her fair career began in 1984 when she entered a jar of plum and peach jelly in the Cleveland County Fair and made her way to the Oklahoma State Fair. “The story that goes behind preparing the jellies and the jams and the interest that each person brings to it is such a wonderful story,” Kloiber said, who is now 63 and lives in Oklahoma City. “The fair is a family.” 26S

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2017

Now she is baking dozens of cookies and producing hundreds of pints of jams, jellies, preserves and butters every year for the state fair in hopes of winning the highest ribbon in each category. “It gets a little hectic around here when the fair comes around,” she said. This year, Kloiber is also in the process of moving several weeks before the fair. Judging will takes place on Sept. 11, and Kloiber makes all of her baked goods the day before, working to make sure everything is as fresh as it can be. Every recipe is scrutinized for looks and taste, with her cookies undergoing multiple taste testings and recipe changes. The most crucial aspect is the amount and type of fat that she uses in her cookies. “You have to enjoy it for what it is. Enjoy it for the fun, enjoy it for friendly competition and meeting THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

At left, Kloiber made this cookie jar lid, featuring family pictures and a poem about baking with her mother and grandmother, for the cookie jar competition in 2012 at the Oklahoma State Fair. The theme that year was “Home Grown Fun.” Kloiber started entering competitions at the Oklahoma State Fair in 1984. with friends who you come in contact with,” Kloiber said. During the 2016 fair, Kloiber entered more than 60 items. She also enters the quick bread category and does the live competition. “We are trying to keep and maintain the homemade and life skills from years ago,” she said. Kloiber’s neighbors and a lucky member of the military get to help with taste tests. Kloiber started a program four years ago called Team Tinker. Through the program, she and others invite an airman to their homes to give them a home away from home. “Baking together is just how the family grows together,” she said. During the 2016 fair, Kloiber placed in the top 10 on most of the competitions she entered. Her sister, Carolyn Martin, takes her ribbons and other items from the fair and makes a scrapbook each year for Kloiber. The exact number of ribbons and metals that she has remains a mystery. Over her years of entering the fair, Kloiber has met many

THE OKLAHOMAN | NEWSOK.COM

great cooks she said, but one in her 80s, Carolyn Demaree, has always given her a run for her money. “She is phenomenal and has the talent and the knowledge when it comes to cooking,” she said. “If you loose or get a low ribbon you got to go and look at who was number one and I am always looking at Ms. Carolyn.” Inspiration for Kloiber comes from her late grandmother, Nora Stanfill, and mother, Thelma Bloomfield, who helped inspired her to bake. Some of her fair memories include her mother, who died in 2012. “I remember when the monorail opened and I told my mother ‘we got to ride this, this is so awesome’.” “I remember every year pulling into the fairgrounds and my mother would be sitting there on the corner waving as we went in to drop off our stuff,” she said. Even as the scrapbooks give Kloiber the ability to look back on her many wins, they may help her in the future. She hopes to hold the world record for having the most blue ribbons.
