GEORGE L ANG

avid Downham always seemed like a natural choice to take over as lead project designer at LOOKatOKC — after successful studies at Ball State University, where he made the dean’s list for three semesters, he came to the Oklahoma Publishing Company as an intern in our art department. A lot of interns spend summers in these offices, but we remember the great ones. LOOKatOKC is a perfect environment for design experiments and creative layouts, complete and forward-thinking entertainment coverage, and there is nothing we value more than fresh ideas. Downham did some stellar work in this building before going to work in a design office in Nashville, but we wanted him back here, and his first issue is one of the big blowouts, our coverage of the 12th Annual deadCenter Film Festival. The first order of business is to prove you can make a LOOKatOKC that looks like a LOOKatOKC — say that fast five times while posing for the “Shots” in the back of the issue. Staffing changes in BY GEORGE LANG the publication world generally give you that LOOKATOKC EDITOR GLANG@OPUBCO.COM five-bottles-of-Pepto feeling, but DownBLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ ham is a natural, and he made it look like he’d STATICBLOG been doing this for years. Now that he’s put together a LOOKatOKC, expect some jaw-dropping design work in his future issues. Like I said, the intern pool around here overflows with journalism talent, which is how I got to know Nathan Poppe. After a few months as editor, I found out I needed a new music columnist — the kind of person more concerned about his next show that his next meal or good night of sleep. He interned with us for two summers, and in between internships I always saw him at concerts or festivals. I was convinced he had a twin and was pulling some kind of film noir scam on us, but it turned out he was just a tireless worker and music obsessive. This issue features his last “Live Nathan” column, and I hate to see Poppe shut it down, but he put in over two years of work, and I am proud to have known him in his early days, before he eventually becomes a global phenomenon. So my natural response was to call Matthew Carney immediately. Yes, Carney was also an intern, part of a completely nuts class of powerhouse journalism students we had here two years ago. The man is a great writer and reporter as well as a superb photographer and videographer, plus he lives and breathes music. Carney is not just up to date but several minutes ahead, and he also possesses a sharp curiosity about the artists who shaped what he listens to right now. His column will begin with the next issue, and while it will focus on music, Carney will bring an entirely different, completely new perspective. Late last month, we welcomed a new group of interns, and I’m already seeing some hard work and great reporting instincts coming from these future journalists. Nathan Poppe, Matthew Carney and David Downham are great examples of how it is done, and how to forge real careers in the tricky realities of modern journalism. I am sure the new class is paying close attention.

ayne Coyne leans against a kitchen counter. The Flaming Lips frontman is resting his head against his palm. Behind Coyne is a poster. Surprisingly, it’s not adorned with concert dates, naked women or skulls. The poster says “Make Your Mark on the World” in bold black letters. I found this photograph while surfing the Interwebs before sitting down to write, and it’s more than appropriate to sum up my feelings on this final Live Nathan column. I’m terrible at goodbyes. More than anything, I wish I could prompt you to look behind your shoulder. Before you turned around, I would be gone and you would have a text that says, “lol something came up brb.” It has been more than two years since George Lang handed me the steering wheel to this column. I couldn’t be more thankful for the opportunity to scare small children with my mugshot and reach Oklahomans with my musical musings. My goal has always been to get people excited about Oklahoma musicians and to push artists that are on their way to making a mark on the world. It’s almost unfair to call this column work because it’s the musicians who are doing all the heavy lifting. Just this year, Stillwater’s Other Lives managed to land an opening spot on tour with Radiohead. Josh Sallee released a sophomore hip-hop album that’s good enough to make me believe OKC could become an epicenter for all things rap. Skating Polly recorded a sophomore album before either member could legally rent a car or vote for a president. Broken Arrow-native JD McPherson is set to perform on “Conan” by the time you read these words. I could go on for hours. The musical environment in Oklahoma is incendiary. Fellow music lover Matt Carney will take over this column, and I couldn’t think of a better fit. He frequents concerts and record stores more often than he visits the bathroom. ‘HEAVEN’ – THE WALKMEN

ock ‘n’ roll does not usually grow up well — it was engineered to either stay forever young or age badly, and for bands showing signs that the anger of their youth is ebbing away, contentment can be the slippery slope leading to complacency. But in all their considerable wisdom, The Walkmen recognize on their blissful sixth album, “Heaven,” that happiness can be its own form of rebellion. So, on the back cover of “Heaven,” all five members of The Walkmen pose with their young children, and that photo, along with the gorgeously energized songs behind it, feels cooler and more defiant than a thousand exposed tattoos or cigarettes dangling from lips. Consider the lyrics to the title song, which plays like a tougher-minded cousin to John Lennon’s “Grow Old

With Me.” Singer Hamilton Leithauser, ever the intense air-puncher, tells his mate “Don’t leave me, you’re my best friend/All of my life, you’ve always been,” informing her that their “children will always hear romantic tales of distant years” as if he cannot wait to bore them with their stories. The album opens with “We Can’t Be Beat,” in which Leithauser pleads, “Give me a life that needs correction,” and insists that reaching perfection equals the end. It is a far cry from the early days of “We’ve Been Had” and “The Rat,” in which Leithauser’s worldweariness and pugnacious fury was “beating down your door,” and yet these attitudes, given extra lilt from Fleet Foxes’ Robin Pecknold on background vocals, sound just as genuine and carry a surprising power. Producer Phil Ek’s recent work with Fleet Foxes, Band of Horses and Father John Misty emphasized mystery and

gauziness, which comported nicely with The Walkmen’s sound up through 2010’s “Lisbon,” but on “Heaven,” Ek sharpens the mix. In this environment, the up-tempo tracks get more punch (the smart and caustic “The Love You Love”) and ballads feel more immediate, less distant. So much of “Heaven” is men feeling good about life, but it’s also an album by a band getting better

and sounding surprised by this development after more than 10 years together. The Walkmen sound like Walkmen on “Heaven,” and they are taking things that rock ‘n’ roll typically defined as uncool — parenting, domestic happiness — and presenting them as the radical, daring pursuits they always were. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘THE ROCK ‘N’ ROLL DREAMS OF DUNCAN CHRISTOPHER’ – SOUNDTRACK

his should not be a surprise, but the soundtrack to Justin Monroe’s “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreams of Duncan Christopher” is a spectacular weapon to be used against coastal twerps who might sneer at or otherwise doubt the rich bounty of great indie music in Oklahoma. Featuring some of the best emerging talent in this state, the soundtrack to Monroe’s indie film about an Oklahoma music scion’s journey of rock ‘n’ roll ambition plays like a particularly amazing weekend at FreeTulsa or the Norman Music Festival. This is not boosterism: the collection is that strong. Colourmusic, Sherree Chamberlain and Broncho’s Ryan Lindsey contribute three tracks each — all of which will be familiar to longstanding fans. Lindsey’s tracks, including “Open Late” and the atmospheric

“Summertime,” hark back to his 2006 album “White Paper Beds,” emphasizing the more introspective side of his songwriting that dominated before the launch of the ‘77 punk-inspired Broncho. Chamberlain’s contributions include her superb “Circus Dear” and “Help Me,” and Colourmusic includes “Put in a Little Gas,” “Someday Speaks Loudly” and “The Gospel Song.” But beyond those three major contributors are standouts from Tulsa hip-hop adventurer Johnny Polygon (“Ebonics”), Ithica (“Broken Kaleidoscope”), Beau Jennings’ great former band Cheyenne (“That Was the Ghost”) and Vandevander (“1000”). In addition, the cast contributes some excellent powerpop songs in the guise of the fictional King Arthur & the Legends, especially “Angeline.” As a film, “The Rock ‘n’ Roll Dreams of Duncan Christopher” taps into the magical thinking of aspiring

musicians, and the music that fuels it displays the actual magic being created

‘RIZE OF THE FENIX’ – TENACIOUS D

he prominent orange-andblack sticker on the wrapper of Tenacious D’s new CD bears the message “Warning! Not for children (or religious people). Censored.” In other words, six years may have passed since lead singer/guitarist Jack Black and lead guitarist/singer Kyle Gass released their previous album, but the acoustic metal/comedy duo definitely hasn’t outgrown their love for four-letter words, raunchy sexual humor and arena-filling rock anthems. Like the rest of their catalog, which includes their platinum selftitled 2001 debut and the gold-certified soundtrack to their 2006 film flop “The Pick of Destiny,” “Rize of the Fenix” isn’t intended for the easily offended. But even if you find their sense of humor off-putting, you have to admire

intrepid individuals who are willing and able to turn their failures into triumphs, and as the title indicates, “Rize of the Fenix” finds the D simultaneously spoofing and falling in line with a grand rock ‘n’ roll tradition: the comeback album. The band reveals the album concept in the first line of the title and opening track, with Black crooning, “When ‘The Pick of Destiny’ was released it was the bomb/ And all the critics said that the deed was done” before growling “The D would rise again/Just like the phoenix.” Even the surprising sonic diversity of the album seems part of the joke, the sort of bet-hedging strategy a beleaguered band seeking a new foothold in the marketplace might adopt. The pair tries a flamenco flair with “Señorita,” shifts from spacey to hard core and back again with “Deth Starr” and delivers an epic folk-rock tribute to the unsung heroes that “make the rock

go” with “Roadie.” They channel Neil Diamond and Bob Seger with the funny album closer “39,” about an aging rocker finding romance with a chick closer to his demographic for a change. The duo pays homage to synthy 1980s soundtrack hits like “Eye of the Tiger” with “Simply the Best,” which provides the perfect launchpad for an uproarious comeback video featuring Val Kilmer, Josh Groban and Foo Fighter Dave Grohl. Tenacious D and their third album are ultimately successful because they are equally capable of rocking your face off and making you laugh your head off. Black and Gass may not look like rock stars, but they can certainly play like them. Plus, they have their pal Grohl on drums for most tracks, and the rock standard-bearer, as usual, brings the thunder. Tenacious D will play a sold-out July 21 show at Tulsa’s Brady Theater. ‘SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN’

Rating: PG-13 (Intense sequence of violence and action and brief sensuality.) Running time: 2 hours, 7 minutes Starring: Kristen Stewart, Chris Hemsworth, Charlize Theron, Toby Jones.

Movie is a dark, stylish take on ‘Snow White’

F

ollowing the trifling, empty-calorie confection of “Mirror Mirror,” the season’s second cinematic stab at the famed Brothers Grimm fairy tale “Snow White and the Huntsman” unfolds in a stylish fashion that’s much bolder, darker and, well, grimmer. While it contains all the “once upon a time” elements so familiar to generations of fable lovers — the vain, conniving queen; the pure, guileless princess; the poison apple; the boisterous woodland dwarfs, and the forebodingly robust huntsman — this interpretation by first-time director Rupert Sanders (who apprenticed on high-end commercials and music videos) is swift and sure-footed and is marked by some bracing flourishes of revisionism and postmodern attitude. Where “Mirror Mirror’s” director Tarsem Singh took a decidedly lighter and jokier path to happily-everafter, Sanders steers his picture along an eerier and grittier trail — through “Game of Thrones” territory where the darkling woods ooze black tar and drip with snakes and where the forest trolls are anything but merry, singsong and Disneyfied. We get a quick initiation into “Snow White and the Huntsman’s” sinister shadings in the opening scenes

on a blood-soaked battlefield, where victorious King Magnus (Noah Huntley) encounters the mesmerizing beauty Ravenna (a fearsome, ravishing Charlize Theron) and soon takes her as his queen. But in short order, the ruthless Ravenna slips a sharp blade into the king’s heart and seizes the throne for herself. Quickly, she banishes her lovely stepdaughter Snow White (“Twilight” alum Kristen Stewart looking wane and overmatched) to the dungeon, plunges her kingdom into a deep funk, and, through the counsel of a magic mirror, determines to consume Snow White’s pure heart to ensure her own supremacy as “the fairest of them all.” But delicate Snow White proves herself no pushover as she escapes and flees into the Dark Forest, where she gathers around her a colorful cadre of allies, even as Queen Ravenna dispatches the cunning, hunky Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth, sporting a bristly Scottish brogue) to track her down. Then, the storybook path to “the end” takes some unusual and mildly compelling turns. While at times the film’s bleakly beautiful atmospherics — its craggy scenery and spiky arsenal of CG effects (Theron bathing in a vat of silky milk and then fracturing apart in a flock of flapping ravens) — threat-

en to overwhelm all else, there are a few potent performances from the cast that keep things in balance. Clearly, Theron herself exerts a powerful counterbalance to the director’s lavish obsession with surface and style. Her chilling rendering of Ravenna combines regal beauty, a heart of black ice and a soul-sucking zeal for evil that adds up to an awesome portrait of ruthlessness. It’s a performance that gives the fable a kind of mythic moral heft. For much-needed comic relief, there are the eight (yes, count ‘em) mushroom-loving dwarfs — a lovably savage band that includes heavy-duty stars Ian McShane, Ray Winstone, Toby Jones and Bob Hoskins, all made diminutive via trick photography. Their uncouth antics and ragged, ruffian warmth offer some welcome respite from the film’s otherwise unrelenting funereal tone. As it wends its way inevitably, if too slowly, toward the requisite fairy-tale ending, “Snow White and the Huntsman” often makes up for what it lacks in storytelling heat with sheer visual inventiveness. Still, with its broody, moody look and fierce, elegant villainess it’s a welcome yin to “Mirror Mirror’s” frivolous yang. — Dennis King, Staff Writer

‘Men in Black’ offers familiar, fizzy sci-fi fun

T

he Men in Black, a top-secret organization protecting Earth from aliens, returns in “Men in Black 3.” Director Barry Sonnenfeld also returns for the third installment of the sci-fi action/ comedy, based on the comic book series by Lowell Cunningham. Will Smith stars as Agent J, who became the partner of Agent K (Tommy Lee Jones) way back in the series’ first installment in 1997. In the new film, the alien criminal Boris the Animal (Jemaine Clement) escapes confinement and travels back in time to prevent Agent K from apprehending him in 1969. Boris is a mass-murderer with eyes on further destruction: He wants to lead his hostile race of ravaging aliens to Earth for a new conquest. When the timeline changes, Agent J must also time-travel, back to the early days of the Men in Black program in 1969, to stop Boris from killing Agent K.

He meets the younger Agent K, played by Josh Brolin, and is coerced into revealing the truth to him. The two agents must work together to stop both Borises — the one from 1969 and now the one from 2012 — to keep Earth from being invaded. Brolin is outstanding as the young K — his mannerisms and method of speaking are eerily similar to Tommy Lee Jones as K. Brolin’s K has a little more hope, a little less world-weariness, but clearly appears as the same gruff, gravelly agent. Smith plays Agent J with the same smooth cockiness he brought to two previous installments. Even if “MIB 3” sees Smith and Jones going through the motions to some degree, they have the motions down. With this being Smith’s first film since 2008, there’s some joy simply in seeing the one-time summer box office champ return to the silver screen. And by making Smith’s J travel back in time to 1969, J is still the audience’s entry point to a strange new world. In this case, that strange new world is the 1960s (with aliens, admittedly).

LOOKATOKC.COM

Michael Stuhlbarg (“Boardwalk Empire,” “Hugo”) plays the wise yet childlike alien Griffin, who can see the various timelines that the agents could cause by their actions. Emma Thompson plays Agent O, the new head of Men in Black, and Alice Eve plays the 1969 version of O. Tulsa’s Bill Hader has a brief but funny appearance as Andy Warhol. The time-travel elements will make your head hurt if you think about them too long, but the script keeps things moving quickly to prevent that from happening, at least while the film is rolling. The effects and design are great, and the 3-D is actually not distracting, for theatergoers who choose that option. With “MIB 3,” the franchise improves from the misstep of “Men in Black 2,” but doesn’t surpass the original. Overall, “MIB 3” is a fizzy summer concoction with some refreshingly familiar flavors. — Matthew Price, Entertainment Editor

lame it on Jamaica’s tourism department or the “trustafarian” in every college dorm who plays the “Legend” album on a constant loop, but the life and work of reggae superstar Bob Marley got oversimplified and commodified in the years following his death. Director Kevin Macdonald’s “Marley,” which kicks off the deadCenter Film Festival at 8:30 tonight with a free outdoor screening on the Oklahoma River and opens wide on June 14, takes a deep look at a musician who, on a global level, is as iconic as John Lennon or Elvis Presley. And like those other great men of rock, there is far more to Marley than his afterlife as a brand. “Marley” was made with the full cooperation of the Marley family: son Ziggy Marley is an executive producer on the film, and Marley’s widow Rita and daughter Cedella are both extensively interviewed. Given that Cedella Marley is now the chief executive officer of her father’s record label, Tuff Gong, it’s easy to assume beforehand that “Marley” will be pure hagiography and devoted to the myth-building traditions that surrounds him. But the family has always been honest about Bob Marley, and Macdonald gives this life a full airing, diving into the family history that would shape his work. Macdonald goes all the way back to Norval Marley, the British colonial supervisor who, at age 60, impregnated

17-year-old Cedella Booker. She gave birth to Robert Nesta Marley in 1945, and throughout his early years, Bob Marley contended with the Trenchtown attitudes toward mixed-race residents and the outright rejection he suffered from the white Marleys. Macdonald documents how a confrontation between Bob and Norval’s other descendants informed the lyrics to 1970’s “Corner Stone”: “The stone that the builder refused/ will always be the head corner stone.” Those words ultimately predicted Bob Marley’s rise as the head of the family and the reduction of the Norval Marley clan to footnotes in the singer-songwriter’s history. The documentary covers Marley’s early days of recording ska versions of pop hits such as Dion and the Belmonts’ “Teenager in Love,” and how his embrace of Rastafarianism informed his adoption of the slower reggae rhythms that powered 1970’s “Soul Rebels” and the two 1973 albums that cemented his worldwide stardom, “Catch a Fire” and “Burnin.” Songs such as “Stir It Up,” “I Shot the Sheriff” and “Get Up, Stand Up” became crossover hits on rock radio and Marley achieved unusual political power for a musician, single-handedly forging a truce during a concert between warring parties in Jamaica. Macdonald (“The Last King of Scotland,” “The Eagle”) does not shy away from touchy subjects such as Marley’s multiple infidelities, including with Jamaica’s 1976

Miss World winner, Cindy Breakspeare (mother of Damian “Junior Gong” Marley), but Rita Marley was and is matter-of-fact about her husband’s wanderings — both women were at his side when he died. The director also offers some fascinating footage of Marley making the wrong choices during his African tour, playing at the invitation of dictators such as Gabonese President Omar Bongo and Robert Mugabe of Zimbabwe. These details are presented in a straightforward, scandal-free tone: Macdonald takes a journalistic view of these stories, which serves to re-humanize Marley after years in which he was exalted as a symbol, the fallen leader of a movement, and eventually as a kind of brand name. The final 20 minutes of “Marley” are a direct and painful description of his final months, when a melanoma on one of his toes metastasized. Marley passed out while jogging in Central Park after a New York City concert, and eventually underwent experimental treatment in Germany, snowed in far away from his tropical homeland. He died on May 11, 1981 and was given a state funeral in Jamaica, and the footage of mourners at the close of the film signals the point where Bob Marley became a kind of reggae demigod. But “Marley” is far more exceptional for showing who this man was before he became the legend. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

RISING ‘X-Men’ star Famke Janssen takes a new direction with deadCenter’s ‘Bringing Up Bobby’

STORY BY GENE TRIPLETT ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR

S

he’s played a powerful psychic mutant in the “XMen” films and a super-villainous Bond girl in “GoldenEye,” but Famke Janssen found her greatest thrill behind the camera, directing a down-toearth family dramedy in Oklahoma City. The result is “Bringing Up Bobby,” which the Dutch actress turned writer-director will introduce to local moviegoers on Saturday during the deadCenter Film Festival. The film will screen at 8 p.m. Saturday in the Sam Noble Theatre at the Oklahoma City Museum of Art, followed by an audience Q&A with Janssen and executive producer Cole Frates after the screening. The film will be shown again at 8 p.m. Sunday at Harkins Bricktown Theaters. The deadCenter Film Festival runs Wednesday through Sunday. “It really feels like we’re bringing it home, and it will be a perfectly complete circle,” Janssen said in a phone interview from her New York apartment last week. “You know, very few things in life can be neat, and I feel like something very nice and complete about the process is when we bring it back as a fully finished product, and we can celebrate the evening with everybody, and there were so many people who were part of getting the movie off the ground, who were part of making it as great as it became, and it’s a celebratory event. I’m very excited about it.” Janssen has already shown “Bringing Up Bobby” at festivals worldwide, including the Cannes and Deauville festivals in France, and festivals in Italy, Holland, Shanghai and Canada, but she admits the anticipation she feels for the deadCenter screening is edged with a bit of opening-night jitters. “To me, the scariest thing is to bring it home, because you want to make sure that the people from Oklahoma like it,” she said. “And I was so taken by the place and I thought that certain things were so beautiful, and I loved putting Pops (on the former Route 66) in there, which is so different-looking from any other building I’ve ever seen.” Other locations used in the film include the postcardfamous Round Barn in Arcadia, Leadership Square in downtown Oklahoma City, a palatial private residence in Nichols Hills, and a couple of the metro area’s less elegant districts. The screenplay by Janssen, based on a story by Janssen and Frates, centers on Olive (Milla Jovovich, “Resident Evil,” “The Three Musketeers”), a nomadic European con artist who settles in Oklahoma City with her 10-year-old American-born son Bobby (Spencer List), hoping to find a better life for him. But Olive’s unrealistic ideas about life and her illegal shenanigans soon become her undoing, landing her in jail while a wealthy couple (Bill Pullman and Marcia Cross) take the wild-spirited Bobby into their care, feeling responsible for the boy in the wake of a nearly-disastrous accident. When Olive regains her freedom with a new grasp on reality, it remains to be seen whether she’ll earn a second chance at responsible motherhood for fall back into her old larcenous ways. Janssen said the idea for the story and its setting came to her when her Los Angeles-based businessman boyfriend Frates brought her back to Oklahoma to meet his family.

“I’d seen the Round Barn and I’d seen Pops and I’d seen all these places where I thought it would make it really interesting,” she said, “ ... and there’s something about Oklahoma, where you still have a train coming right through town. “... And, being a foreigner, even though I’ve lived in the United States for about 20 years in New York, I thought it was a unique and different place, very American in a way. “So that then became a topic of conversation: What if we set a movie in Oklahoma and make the protagonist European, like I am, because it was sort of through my eyes ... What are the things that as a foreigner you either take for granted or you find interesting or funny or different,” she said. “And so that’s how the story kind of came about.” Janssen said another enticement for filming in the Sooner state was its Film Enhancement Rebate Program, which offered a 35 percent return on film production expenditures made within the state. “And it was really wonderful, the help we got from everybody, from (Oklahoma Film and Music Office director) Jill Simpson.”

Filming of the $1.5 million production was Film completed on a tight month-long schedcom ule in July and August of 2010 and is set u ffor wide theatrical release this coming October. Meanwhile, Janssen has been O maintaining a steady income taking roles m iin the upcoming “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” with Jeremy Renner and W “Taken 2” with Liam Neeson. “Ta wanted to couple our ‘Bringing Up Bobby’ “I wan to one of the bigger movies because it’s so difficult to get press for a small movie these days,” she said. “And I thought if I had a big studio film, then at least when I do publicity I can use that a little bit for my own movie.” Janssen is hoping her directorial debut will lead to other projects behind the lens, because she likes the taste of artistic control. “I’ve already written my next screenplay that I want to direct in my next hiatus,” she said. “Yeah, you know, it’s so much more fulfilling on so many different levels than acting has ever been to me. Not that acting isn’t wonderful. It is a really great job. But ultimately everything is in the hands of somebody else, so you have to give up so much control and what happens to the end product has nothing to do with you. “And you can do your best work, but if somebody decides to cut you out of the movie, it’s better served cutting your scenes in a different way. I know now because I’ve been through it as a director. You can really change people’s performances. This is much more satisfying because I have a lot more control.”

It’s a blessing for the many local artists, too, who have jumped on the current Thunder fever, producing creative designs in high demand for the booming Thunder der wear market. At Blue Seven, Arter ter said he carries items designed by about 18 local artists. You can even wear your Thunderr pride on your fingernails with team m nail decals, sold at Party Galaxy. High-end local jewelers are also so getting in on the action. Mitchener ner Farrand can’t seem to keep Thununder jewelry in stock, owner Mark Mitchener said. The store carries several pieces with affordable prices and a few big-ticket items priced about $10,000. Whether the Thunder snags a title or not, the Oklahoma City team has added an exciting camaraderie to its city that is evident in Oklahoma’s new favorite color scheme: Thunder blue, orange and white.
