taring down my third anniversary as editor of LOOKatOKC, looking at everything we transformed and all that transpired, I’m taking stock of just how we keep the plates spinning. It is one thing to be a writer and be responsible for telling the story effectively, but putting your name on a publication, determining the creative course and letting readers see your nerdcore official head shot in every issue is a Pepto Bismol party. Obviously, editing has its perks. Much like LOOKatOKC’s “Mad Men” issue in 2011, our cover story on Devo, who will play with Blondie Sept. 20 at the Zoo Amphitheater, does a triple lindy down the rabbit hole of geekery. Yes, it is indulgent to focus so much information on a cult band, but the deep mythology Devo accumulated over the course of 40 years is worth exploring. If you were born after, say, “Oh No! It’s Devo” and most of the band’s work exists in your pre-history, your lesson plan begins on page 20. But one of the greatest lessons of the past three years is developing the frequently valuable trait of extreme flexibility. The first couple of times we had writers or staffers move on and we brought new talent into their positions, I freaked the freak out. My BY GEORGE LANG friend Matthew Price, features editor for The LOOKATOKC EDITOR Oklahoman, often points out that I am change GLANG@OPUBCO.COM resistant. Sure, I’m all-in for new tech and BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG new music, but substantive changes in my work environment tend to send me into fits of bellowing and bargaining. I’m learning to be better at this. Tai Chi might help. In the next issue, LOOKatOKC will change, but will not lose anything. That is the easy kind of transition, in which there is no threat of Devo-style de-evolution and only forward movement. I will introduce someone new in our pages, but because so many of you know this person already, the results will feel like they were always meant to happen someday. I hope this gets your attention and brings about mass speculation as to who is joining LOOKatOKC. This is going to be massive, and thanks to David Downham, Matthew Carney, Lacey Lett, the Food Dude, the new contributor to be named later and everyone else who helps build this publication and keeps me from having to hit the medicine cabinet.

Deacon’s ‘America’ provides a lot to dig into
I
n the dozen or so reviews I’ve read of Dan Deacon’s third LP, the wonderful and challenging electro-acoustic “America,” not a single one cited a lyric from the 43-minute record. Yes, in the critics’ defense, we’re talking about Dan Deacon, the oddball Baltimorean who titled his first listenable album “Spiderman of the Rings” and once cartoonishly warped the words to Ludacris’s “What’s Your Fantasy?” like a VHS running on fast-forward. “Bromst,” his second LP for a respectable indie label, attempted to divorce both lyric and sound from any real-world associations and metaphor, successfully aided by the onomatopoeic groupchanting and complicated electronic programming of which Deacon is fond (see: “Snookered”). Paul Simon, he certainly isn’t. But there’s a lot of important artistic growth and questions raised over the course of the nine tracks on “America,” the last four of which are linked in a suite titled “USA,” which Deacon said was inspired by a cross-country railroad trip in 2006. Over five days in December he watched as the country’s geography rolled and morphed from Seattle to New York, a progression that’s captured in all its natural beauty by the suite’s euphoric, electronically generated melodies (see: “USA II: The Great American Desert”) and minimalist woodwind loops (see: “USA III: Rail”). The latter is exactly the soundtrack for when you wake up to find the morning sun breaking over mountains that weren’t there when you fell asleep. Here’s where Deacon’s big step up in the

lyric-writing department comes into play, an improvement that my friend Ethan compared to Sufjan Stevens’ growth as a songwriter from his frivolous early records “A Sun Came” and “Enjoy Your Rabbit” —remember how silly “Super Sexy Woman” sounds?)— to the exhaustive, storytelling breadth of “Michigan.” By filtering out all the weirdo cartoony stuff that made “Spiderman” so much fun, he’s able to ask serious existentialist questions about consumerism, property rights, and whether or not we’re better off living in an America that often sacrifices its abundant natural resources for technological progression. Vaguely apocalyptic prophecies spill out in a short, repetitive meter like “Live the lives you’ve been sold/as a nightmare unfolds” on “True Thrush,” the best individual song on “America.” This is the capital-R kind of Romantic stuff that Wordsworth and Coleridge wrote poems about, set to propulsive, undulating drum beats, orchestral arrangements, warped electronica, and Deacon’s signature zany pop melodies. It’s unprecedented. The other big accomplishment of Deacon’s stepped-up lyric game is how it supplies his songs with the landscape imagery that his music seems to —at times— pass, plow, walk, and rush
through. His previous records feel frenetic and untethered, but in “America” there’s a strong sense of setting. Mountains, plains, deserts, hillsides, and skylines are populated by wise owls, blind dogs, burnt crops, scattered ash, and flames. And there he stands at the end of the record wondering about his place in all of it on “USA IV: Manifest”: “Feel like I’m all flesh and no bone/I’m not the shapes that I’m shown/ Hope I get it right tomorrow.” Like the subject of its title, “America” provides a lot to dig into, and is loaded with conflicts. “America is a word with an infinite range of connotations, both positive and negative. Even its literal definition is open to discussion,” Deacon wrote on his Web site. “In using it as the title of album, in a small way, I’m contributing to the discussion...It’s that juxtaposition of fundamentally opposed ideologies that makes up the American landscape.” Like Bruce Springsteen before him, Dan Deacon’s using pop music to explore the personal conflict that comes with American citizenship. And being that “America” is way more honest and earnest than your run-of-the-mill stump speech, I might suggest writing in his name come November.

Wearing white is still all right LACEY LETT
S
adly, Labor Day is over. It marks the unofficial end to summer. There won’t be another national holiday from work until Thanksgiving. The night begins beating out day. The pools are closing. And you can’t wear white anymore. Wait a second. Oh no, you didn’t! What’s the deal with not wearing white after Labor Day? To some it’s a major offense if you do so, but I’ve never adhered to the rule or understood why, until now. I looked it up. Being the super columnist I am, it only took 20 years of wondering to actually Google the question. Labor Day started in 1882, according the Department of Labor’s Web site, as “a creation of the labor movement and is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of American workers. It constitutes a yearly national tribute to the contributions workers have made to the strength, prosperity, and wellbeing of our country.” So what does that have to do with white? So far, nothing. According to a Time.com article, there are several theories behind the white faux pas. A lot of it had to do with weather and white being the coolest color to wear in hot summer months. White clothes would become too dirty during fall rain. Another theory is the elite leaving on vacation to Europe in white and returning in their bright new clothes. So really there is no reason to not wear white after Labor Day. The holy grail of etiquette, “Emily Post’s Etiquette” even gives you permission to wear the cool color. So do it, you daredevil, you. The fashion elite want you to. Alexander Wang, Carmen Marc Valvo and Derek Lam created fashions in all shades of white for fall into winter. Celebrities including Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Katherine Heigl have all been recently spotted wearing the trend. It’s a look that can be workappropriate with a white blazer or dressed down with white jeans and

a T-shirt. It goes well with any color as long as you don’t try to be too matchymatchy with it. The White Stripes used to pull that off onstage, but offstage it’s a costume. It is equal parts elegant and sexy. I mean, arguably the sexiest scene in a movie was Sharon Stone wearing a white dress in “Basic Instinct.” It’s romantic, sexy, and elegant all in one. Consider it the “every color.” Everyone can wear it, in any way you choose to do so. So let’s give Labor Day a blank slate, and sport the utterly fabulous color that is white or cream or beige or bone or whatever variation you choose. Photos provided.

‘SUN’ – CAT POWER
han Marshall took an elliptical path to recording “Sun,” her first Cat Power album in six years. Originally, Marshall entered the studio to record a batch of pre-2000 songs, only to sideline those archival compositions when all-new material began to develop during the sessions. But then, as Marshall said in a recent interview for Spotify, a friend told her that those new songs were “super depressing,” prompting her to discard both those dark songs and her old ways of writing. So Marshall began composing on synthesizers and drum machines before bringing in Cassius member Philippe Zdar, who produced Beastie Boys’ “Hot Sauce Committee, Part Two,” to brighten the sound on “Sun.” The presence of technology on “Sun” is not entirely left field — drum loops showed up on “American Flag” from
1998’s “Moon Pix” — but the crisp futuristic bent is evident on opening track “Cherokee” and builds from there, leading into the jeep beats and atmospheric synth washes on the title song. “Ruin,” Marshall’s examination of first-world complaints and third-world realities, begins with an Afro-Cuban piano figure before accelerating to an energetic dance-rock gallop. Cat Power’s embrace of present-tense pop methodology on “Sun” is not as alienating as the list of styles and collaborators might suggest. But while her previous album, 2006’s “The Greatest,” was recorded in Memphis with Al Green sidemen — on the surface, a much more complimentary environment — Marshall’s lyrics and her rich, soulful voice are still the most important components of a Cat Power album. “Sun” proves that any attempts to pigeonhole Marshall as a bare-bones traditionalist were premature. When “Sun” misses the mark, it’s
not because of the high-tech polish. Burnished by Auto Tuned background vocals, Marshall’s “3,6,9” is a distressingly trite hip-hop/folk exercise — the execution might be cutting edge, but the shopworn song structure makes “3,6,9” sound like a late-1990s postgrunge relic. Hearkening back to earlier days is not inherently bad, but while “3,6,9” evokes Everlast, the majestic “Nothin’ But Time” is redolent of more rarefied artists. A song directed at

ex-boyfriend Giovanni Ribisi’s teenage daughter, “Nothin’ But Time” references the similarly themed “Hey Jude” in terms of viewpoint and epic length, with Iggy Pop’s baritone kicking in at the six-minute mark to tell the girl that she “Ain’t got nothin’ but time, it ain’t got nothin’ on you/ Your world is just beginning.” It is one of Cat Power’s best and most relatable songs, primarily because its heartbeat is so distinctly human. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘DEVOTION’ – JESSIE WARE
essie Ware does not have a default setting for her uncommonly expressive, soulful voice, but the British singer’s full-length debut, “Devotion,” occupies a rarefied sonic space. “Devotion” embodies the same sense of lush, seductive atmosphere that made Roxy Music’s “Avalon” and Bryan Ferry’s follow-up album, “Boys & Girls,” such essential alt-rock romance staples, and it does so in service to a singer who possesses an actor’s sense of what her material needs. That range and intuitive sense of what is required and desired gets illustrated quickly, with Ware crooning about mutual devotion on the pensive title song, then opening up with full anthem pipes on “Wildest Moments.” Ware avoids overselling or “oversoul-

ing,” staying away from the histrionics that might attract lesser talents, which makes her displays of power and her sense of when to keep it in reserve so impressive. On “Running,” she begins at a quiet storm level as the echoing drums and elegant guitars vibrate behind her, but then she hits turbo. As she sings “And I’m lost again” at the midpoint of “Running,” Ware is in soul-diva territory, then dials it back on the Ferry-esque mantra of sadness and seduction, “No To Love.” Ware writes songs worthy of her expensive sounding production by Julio Bashmore, Kid Harpoon and Dave Okumu, expressing sentiments of cautious romantic hope in “Night Light” that radiate soul — on this track, her vocal clarity and strength evoke one of Ware’s idols, Chaka Khan. She maintains a serious mood throughout “De-

mature. Plenty of reviewers compare Ware to British pop-soul singers of the recent past, such as Lisa Stansfield or Tracey Thorn, but if “Devotion” is only the beginning, her impact could be closer to that of Dusty Springfield. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

he overused “supergroup” label can often mean one of two things: a messy ego-clash of frontmen from different hotshot bands that doesn’t measure up to anyone’s expectations, or a meeting of kindred creative minds that satisfies or exceeds everybody’s expectations. Divine Fits is one of those rare side projects that succeed in exceeding. The trio is comprised of Spoon’s Britt Daniel, Dan Boeckner of Wolf Parade and Handsome Furs, and New Bomb Turks’ Dan Boeckner, all of whom share a propensity and enormous talent for creating spare, urgent, percussive alt-pop explorations that are consistently catchy, and lyrics that often delve into the chilly dark side of existence. Daniel’s spiky guitars, rhythmically halting song structures and me-
lodic pop hooks seem to just naturally complement Boeckner’s new wave synthesizer stylings from the get-go on the throbbing album opener “My Love Is Real,” penned by Boeckner, which is the album’s first single release, and the stripped-bare, buzz-embroidered, telegraphic guitar rocker “Flaggin’ a Ride,” written by Daniel. Daniel’s tuneful fuzztone and blare and slapbackechoing vocals dominate much of the proceedings, especially on Spoon-like deconstructions such as the jittery “Would That Not Be Nice,” the uncharacteristically danceable and summery “Like Ice Cream” and the fever-dreamy “Neopolitans.” Through it all, Brown runs a tight and efficient, fine-tuned engine room that keeps everything rocking steady, and the listener is left hoping Divine Fits will do it again sometime. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘The Words’ builds on triangle of tangled truth, lies
W
hat is truth and what is fiction? Do the two ever touch? How do you tell? These are some of the riddles worth solving in “The Words,” a haunting story of love, loss, truth and lies. It will leave you wondering what happened and who is telling the real story. “The Words” opens with best-selling author Clay Hammond (Dennis Quaid) reading from his new novel “The Words.” As he starts to read, the scene dissolves into the story he tells. Rory (Bradley Cooper) and Dora (Zoe Saldana) get into a limo on a rainy night. Rory is nervous. He’s accepting a major literary award for his gripping book “The Window Tear.” Dora is doing her best to soothe his nerves. The young author is the embodiment of overnight success after years of work. He has studied writing and thought he had ideas to share, but his first book got a stack of rejection letters. He had worked at a menial job in a publishing house, hoping to make contacts that would help later. He recalls moving to New York with Dora, marrying her and honeymooning in Paris. There, Dora bought him a battered leather briefcase, perfect for holding the works of a young writer. As Rory fills the satchel with his own work, he stumbles on a timeworn folder full of typewritten pages. The story there is electric and he reads it through and is caught by the prose of the writer he will never be. The love story haunts him — he can’t sleep for thinking of it. What to do? He knows it is an original because there is an inky smudged fingerprint on one page. Thrown into an ethical quandary, he does something
both predictable and despicable. He copies it onto his computer to see how it feels to write that poignantly. Quite by chance, his wife finds the story on his computer and realizes her husband has written something so different, so beautiful that he has to have editors and agents take a look at it. Should he tell her the origin of the story and risk changing the adoring expression on her face? That book is his ticket to the world of recognition, awards and having his other work published. He takes the chance no one will discover his lie. He doesn’t know he has been followed since the night in the limo ride in the rain. It’s a sunny day and Rory is sitting on a park bench by a pond when an old man (Jeremy Irons) stops, sits, and tells Rory what an amazing book he had written. Used to adulation by now, Rory is nice, thanking the old man and talking to him. He autographs the old man’s copy of his book and tries to brush him off, only to be stopped as the old man says the thing he thought could not happen. It’s the old man’s story. Rory can see his world crashing down, but curiously, the man only wants Rory to listen to how those pages found their way into that case. Set in Paris at the end of World War II, a young American soldier has realized the world extends far beyond the borders of his Philadelphia neighborhood. He has met a beautiful French woman and as they fall in love, he must return to that tiny world. He breaks free, returns to Paris and marries his beautiful girl. They have a daughter and things seem to be going well. A tragedy shatters the little family and in two weeks of angst-ridden writing, his story is told and safely tucked LOOKATOKC.COM
into a brand-new leather case, which is lost on a train. Author Clay Hammond is taking a break when a young postgraduate student comes to seduce the middle-aged author. Daniella (Olivia Wilde) wants to understand what drives a man to write such a complicated work, and is anxious to see how the young author in the book deals with this ethical quandary, or if the fictional story might be true. It’s these layers that make “The Words” work. Each question brings more questions and the viewer must decide what makes sense and what is his own truth. The Parisian love story is easily the best. Actors Ben Barnes and Nora Arnezeder are perfect as the young pair whose lives are defined by great loss. Their curiously innocent tale is the bedrock of “The Words.” Rory and Dora’s contemporary tale is one of choices and beliefs. What would you do for the person who loves you? Would you support them no matter what? Would you change your version of what’s right and wrong to convince your spouse you’re the person they think you are? Hammond and Daniella, while necessary, provide the weakest side of this triangle of tales. Hammond is world weary, Daniella unbending as the answers she gets about Hammond’s book shake her version of standards and ethics. “The Words” will leave you without answers. You must make your own judgment about whose story is true, who is hiding things and what happens after the last scene fades. It’s a great movie to discuss, to discover what others think the actual words mean. Flawed as it is, “The Words” is a movie you will want to see again. — Sandi Davis, Satff Writer I

eleste and Jesse Forever” explores the relationship of the perfect couple, and why they couldn’t seem to make it work. Star and co-screenwriter Rashida Jones starts with an amicable parting and then really messes with the lives of the title couple, giving herself a strong seriocomic showcase and finally letting Andy Samberg confirm suspicions that the former “Saturday Night Live” star can really, truly act. At the outset, Celeste (Jones of “Parks and Recreation”) and Jesse (Samberg) seem ideal as they banter at a dinner with friends Beth and Tucker (Ari Graynor and Eric Christian Olsen) — they share an easy and rare chemistry. But the infuriating truth, as Beth sees it, is that people who clearly love and like one another this much should not be getting a divorce after six years of marriage. Jones and script collaborator Will McCormack, who appears in a small role as Jesse’s pot-dealing buddy Skillz, go to work fleshing out the characters and how it went wrong without any flashbacks or much exposition. marketing company, so it is her business to be right about the past, present and especially the future. Jesse, on the other hand, is an artist without the drive or the certainty to keep up with his wife. He is sweet natured, but barely knows what he’s doing. As much as Jesse and Celeste loved each other — and as the title suggests, they always will — their personalities caught up with their good intentions. The explication over just how much Celeste’s attitudes affected the outcome can be a little too on-the-nose, since a key framing device involves how Jones’ character deals with people who are clearly and defiantly in the wrong. She is paid to tell people the truth as she sees it, and as it turns out, it is also a hobby. Jesse is less grounded in certainty. This carries its own failings, since he is stumbling into parenthood with Veronica (Rebecca Dayan), a woman he just barely knows, but he is trying to fall in love with her partly because he feels it is right, and partly because he misses what he had with Celeste. Directed by Lee Toland Krieger, who made an impressive debut with 2009’s “The Vicious Kind” (starring Jones’ “Parks and Recreation” co-star, LOOKATOKC.COM
Adam Scott), “Celeste and Jesse Forever” is bolstered by nice supporting performances by Elijah Wood as Celeste’s boss and Emma Roberts as Riley Banks, a Ke$ha-like pop star who the contemptuous Celeste is forced to market. But this is Jones and Samberg’s show, and both give impressively emotional performances as people who smile and laugh a lot but are secretly — and then not-sosecretly — sad and getting sadder. Fortunately, the funny moments and sweet chemistry between Samberg and Jones keep “Celeste and Jesse Forever” from becoming a study in miserable-ism a la “Blue Valentine.” The film does meander and occasionally traffics in overly familiar characters and behavioral tropes, but “Celeste and Jesse Forever” is brave enough to suggest, against the strict laws of romantic comedy dynamics, that some things cannot be fixed and true love might not conquer all. But the consolation in the post-married life of Celeste and Jesse is that smart people, if they start paying attention, can learn from their many mistakes. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘Robot & Frank’ will steal your heart

unny how some of the warmest heartbreakers in the science-fiction genre involve relationships between humans and machines. There was Ray Bradbury’s “I Sing the Body Electric,” a short story and classic “Twilight Zone” episode about a wise and kindly automaton grandmother (Josephine Hutchinson) who becomes a beloved member of a motherless family; Richard Matheson’s “Steel,” also a short story and “Twilight Zone” teleplay about a failed boxer (Lee Marvin) who invests all his battered hope in a robot heavyweight that’s obsolete and breaking down; and Steven Spielberg’s “A.I. Artificial Intelligence,” a 2001 film based on a Brian Aldiss short story about a little android “boy” (Haley Joel Osment) programmed with the ability to love. “Robot & Frank” follows that well-used manmachine relationship plot gimmick, too, but with fresher, less sentimental and subversively funnier
twists, while still managing to be heartwarmingly human, too. Frank (Frank Langella) is a retired burglar, a onceskilled second-story man (although he’s done two prison stretches) now entering his forgetful twilight years in the near future. His adult children, Hunter (Oklahoma-born James Marsden) and Madison (Liv Tyler) are worried he’s no longer fit to live alone and they’re thinking it’s time for the nursing home. But then Hunter thinks he has a better idea, and buys Frank a walking, talking robot butler (voice of Peter Sarsgaard) programmed to improve the cantankerous old man’s physical and mental health. Frank wants no part of this, but it beats the alternative, so he puts up with the little machine’s obnoxious preaching about diet and exercise until it gradually dawns on him that Robot could be a useful tool in breaking back into the burglary business. Since knowledge of the law and the moral implications of things like stealing are not part of his proLOOKATOKC.COM
gramming, Robot complies with Frank’s wishes and becomes a skilled lock-picker. And the first target Frank picks is the neighborhood library where he’s been carrying on a long-standing flirtation with lovely librarian Jennifer (an irresistibly fetching Susan Sarandon). What transpires when Frank resumes his felonious ways is at turns surprising, bitingly funny and bittersweet enough to make one’s eyes well up, without ever sliding into sappiness. “Robot & Frank” is an impressive debut for director Jake Schreier and screenwriter Christopher D. Ford, both NYU graduates and co-founders of Waverly Films. But the real treat here is Langella’s masterful portrayal of a willful and mischievous man beginning to feel the chill of his winter years, and the consequences of neglect. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘M ADDE N NFL 13’ A ND ‘ NCA A FOOTBALL 1 3 ’
‘Madden NFL 13’ a bold revamp of franchise
E
A Sports has rolled the dice on a major overhaul of its best-selling “Madden NFL” football franchise this season — and most of its gambles have paid off. “Madden NFL 13” (for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, $59.95) swapped out the booth announcers, switched to a more classic presentation, overhauled the menu system and crafted a comprehensive Connected Career mode. But the most notable change is a new physics engine that dramatically varies the hits and avoids the repetitive sequences of previous years. The realtime action is way more exciting than in previous years, as players bounce off each other with force and stumble over on-field pileups. The Infinity Engine is far from perfect, resulting at times in bentback arms, overly dramatic flailing and enough neck snaps to keep a team neurologist running tests around the clock. But most of the animations hold their realism in slow motion. Introducing real physics into collisions is a huge change for the Madden franchise, and the developers are sure to refine it in future installments. One of the major offensive changes this season is the addition of receiver awareness. A quarterback now must wait for a receiver to be ready (as indicated by his icon changing from grayed-out to color) before making a throw. That’s a big improvement, since quickly throwing a 10-yard pass to a wide-out running a deep route should not result in a completion. Xbox 360 players can now use the Kinect microphone to control some of the action. To be able to simply call out “Audible, Deep Pass” when you see the defense stacked against the

run or yell “Blitz” on defense is much easier than scrambling with buttons. After modeling its presentation style in previous years around Fox Sports and ESPN broadcasts, “Madden NFL 13” has opted for a more subdued CBS-style approach, replacing rock and hip-hop tunes with orchestral scores and putting Jim Nantz and Phil Simms in the booth. The play-by-play and commentary are remarkably natural considering EA Sports started from scratch with the announcing pair, and their laid-back style is better suited to make 9,000 recorded phrases sound like they’re being spoken in sentences. Attempts during the past two years to piece together clips of Fox announcer Gus Johnson — ranging from calm to frenzied — never quite worked. After revamping the franchise mode last year, “Madden NFL 13” combines the franchise and be-a-star modes into Connected Careers, which offers incredible depth. Gamers can create a rookie, become a coach or take control of a Hall of Famer in either off-line or online modes. Altogether, the upgrades in “Madden NFL 13” provide great hope for the future of the franchise. Three-and-a-half stars out of four. EA Sports has taken a more conservative approach with its college football sim, “NCAA Football 13” (for the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3, $59.95). The series has continued to improve its graphics to keep up with its pro-football cousin. It also made some key improvements on offense, adding new quarterback dropbacks, throw and catch animations and pass trajectories as well as the receiver awareness feature found in “Madden NFL 13.” A great new mode is the Heisman Challenge that allows players to take control of a legendary player during his breakout season. Since EA can only refer to current college athletes with generic names like “RB (hash)22,” the ability to run over defenses as Barry Sanders or Herschel Walker is a welcome addition. The Heisman Challenge also offers the ability to briefly slow time to look down receivers or find key blocks to trail. It’s like the bullet time in “Fallout 3” — without the bullets. “NCAA Football 13” is a solid game, but its improvements are incremental and I’m not sure it’s worth shelling out another $60 if you own last year’s model. ‘PAP O & YO’ A ND ‘ DU S T’
‘Papo & Yo’ tells disturbing tale of abuse
B
ig-budget video games are becoming more and more like Hollywood blockbusters — plenty of spectacle, but not much room for small, personal stories. Independent game designers, like indie filmmakers, are trying to fill the gap. “Papo & Yo” (Minority Media, for the PlayStation 3, $15) takes place in an unspecified South American slum, a setting we gamers usually see only as the backdrop for a crime drama like “Max Payne 3” or the guerrilla fighting of the “Call of Duty” series. This barrio, however, is home to a boy named Quico, who discovers ways to transform his bleak environment into something magical. Graffiti turn into keyholes that unlock secret portals; shacks can be piled atop one another to form bridges. Quico is accompanied by a lumbering pink beast he calls Monster. The creature is initially helpful: The boy can coax him into holding down pressure plates, or bounce off his belly to reach rooftops. But Monster loves to eat frogs, and if he gets one in his jaws, watch out. They turn the big lug into a furious brute, and if Quico cannot scramble away quickly enough, the kid takes most of the damage. A piece of fruit is usually enough to calm Monster down, but the rampages are terrifying. Monster, it turns out, is a metaphor for the alcoholic, abusive father of Vander Caballero, the lead designer of “Papo & Yo.” As Monster’s rages become more frequent and more violent, Quico has to make a decision — one that will resonate with anyone who has ever lived with an addict. As a game, “Papo & Yo” isn’t entirely satisfying. Its puzzles are generally obvious and its mechanics are a little rough around the edges. But it explores a distinctive world, and gracefully tackles a disturbing subject. It will linger in players’ minds long after they’ve forgotten about more slickly produced games. Three stars out of four. Another indie auteur who’s making waves is animator and self-taught programmer Dean Dodrill. His “Dust: An Elysian Tail” (Humble Hearts, for the Xbox 360, $15) isn’t a personal tale like “Papo & Yo”; instead, it’s a loving tribute to some of Dodrill’s favorite things, including Walt Disney, “Super Metroid” and “Ninja Gaiden.” Dust is a foxlike critter with a bad case of amnesia. With the help of a talking sword and a flying rodent named Fidget, he begins to remember his role in a brutal civil war — and, when he sees the damage done, tries to stop it. Dust’s odyssey takes him through a series of two-dimensional landscapes that evoke the great Disney movies; the deer and bunnies frolicking in one forest, for example, are reminders of “Bambi.” There are thousands of monsters to slay, but a lively combat system that lets you chain together hundreds of attacks prevents the fighting from ever getting dull. There’s also a sprawling world map to explore, plenty of hidden treasure and some basic role-playing elements. For an indie game, “Dust” tries to squeeze in a lot — and, fortunately, most of it works. Three stars. — From The Associated Press

DEVO: Z A F R O M to
BY GEORGE LANG LOOKatOKC Editor
Devo emerged as one of the key architects of high-concept post-punk and became one of the most important audiovisual bands of the early 1980s. After a series of short reunions, Devo released its first album in 20 years, “Something for Everybody,” in 2010. Devo has a long and storied musical history, so start studying with this safe and effective Z to A list. The test will be held at 7 p.m. Sept. 20 when Devo performs with Blondie at the Zoo Amphitheater. Spuds unite!

THE SAME YEAR THAT NEIL YOUNG RELEASED his experimental electro-rock album, 1982’s “Trans,” Young (working under his cinematic pseudonym Bernard Shakey) and Dean Stockwell directed “Human Highway,” a bizarre “midnight movie” about radiation and apocalypse which featured Devo as “Nuclear Garbagepersons” and Booji Boy drinking gasoline from the pump. It also features a collaboration between Young and Devo on a sub-genius version of “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black).”
O IN 1981 AND 1984, MEMBERS OF THE CLUB DEVO ng fan club were able to purchase the “Devo E-Z Listening Muzak Cassettes,” soothing instrumental versions of “Swelling Itching Brain,” “Come Back Jonee” and “Peek-A-Boo.” It’s not exactly Mantovani/101 Strings-style elevator music — the collections, compiled in 1987 in convenient compact disc form, sound more like mutated karaoke backing tracks of Devo favorites.

IDEAS COME
L.EAZY FOR LOCAL RAPPER BY G E O R G E L A N G LOOKatOKC Editor

ee Jarrett saw two paths he could take as a hiphop artist: try to cultivate interest with record labels or be fully self-sufficient. So as he built his rep as L.eazy through frequent regional tours, he also created a YouTube concept, “Making of a Hip-Hop Mogul,” a reality series that he said can be applied to any hip-hop star — from humble beginnings to success. “It’s basically a marketing and branding tool for any new artist, because you get a chance to see them in the beginning stage, in their McDonald’s job, and then see them turn it around,” Jarrett said. “Going to meetings, having record companies interested, and then going back to work Monday morning.” In his own trailer for “Making of a Hip-Hop Mogul,” released on YouTube through his video production group Video Junkies, Jarrett, who was born in Dallas but decided to stay in OKC after graduating from Southwest Christian University in Bethany, is shown performing shows interspersed with footage of him at Will Rogers World Airport, where he worked for American Airlines. The Oklahoma City-based rapper, who will tape a segment for KSBI’s “Oklahoma Live” on Sept. 17 at the Oklahoma State Fair and will stage a “Freaks and Geeks Party” on Sept. 28 at Thunder Alley Grill and Sports Lounge, I-240 and Penn, said he takes his inspiration from independent acts such as Tech N9ne. The Kansas City, Mo.-based rapper created a cottage industry for himself, releasing albums on his own and building a fan base through incessant touring. Jarrett’s ongoing tour is called “All Gas, No Brakes,” which he said describes his attitude toward cultivating his hip-hop business. “My idea is, as I grow and my business grows, so does my music,” he said. Jarrett established a multi-tiered approach to promotion, something he applied to his recent bass-heavy songs such as the 2010 single “Captain Kirk” and more recent songs “Coach Put Me in the Game” and his just-released electro-tinged ballad, “In Your Heart.” By establishing a management company, Gate 4 Music Group, and working closely with local acts such as Big Grump, who performed with L.eazy at a Gate 4 showcase at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Events Center in May, Jarrett is trying cover all the bases. “You can do it by yourself,” he said. “By having talent and being business-savvy, you’re going to be fine. I’ve talked to artists who are signed, are popular and are broke. Those horror stories — I never want to be in that position.” Photo by CHRIS LANDSBERGER, The Oklahoman <<<

n December 2013, the Metro Wine Bar and Bistro, 6418 N Western Ave., turns 25, but owners Chris and LaVeryl Lower are celebrating more than a year in advance after hiring chef Christine Dowd to amp up the kitchen of one of the city’s most respected restaurants. When Dowd closed her downtown Trattoria il Centro earlier this year after seemingly endless construction in the area, it was a dark day in the local dining scene. She and partner Maggie Howell still run the highly successful Aunt Pittypat’s Catering, but paraphrasing Chris Lower, it didn’t seem right that diners could enjoy her food by invitation only. So, a few months ago, Lower engaged chef Dowd, and a deal was struck. Dowd takes the executive chef jacket, following chef Rolyn Soberanis, who is now at Big Truck Tacos. “Rolyn is doing great with Big Truck,” said Lower, who is also co-owner of the wildly successful gourmet taqueria. “We’ve got some plans for maximizing his talents there.” Dowd, who was born and raised in New Jersey with professional stops in New York, San Francisco and Chicago, has spent her first month-plus at The Metro getting to know the kitchen staff, streamlining the operation and gauging how best to make herself at home. She was charged with taking the Metro to the next level. After a short audit, she was struck by the wine list. “The wine list here is one of the best in the state,” Dowd said. “My goal is to create a menu that matches the wine list.” Dowd and the Lowers are currently engaged in a menu makeover. They expect to unveil it this month. “We will still offer classic, seasonal dishes,” Lower said. Dowd concurred, saying she looks forward to the broader canvas The Metro offers her.

DOWD’S ‘WOW’ FACTOR
IF YOU GO
Those who knew Dowd only for her work at Trattoria il Centro will be wowed by her range. Her ability and knowledge of Italian food is unquestioned, but she is a classically trained chef. She is well-known in the chef community for her knowledge and technique across the board, not to mention uncanny leadership and passion for sharing it with students and young chefs. I love to tell the story of when Dowd joined us for the Chefs Recipe Challenge at Culinary Kitchen. Tasked with making fish sticks, she made what I still consider the best dish I had during that 13-month run. Then,

four-minute egg rolled in breadcrumbs at Odyssey de Culinaire in 2011, which chef after chef called the dish most likely to be stolen for a weekly special. Dowd’s passion is seasonal cooking with local ingredients, which matches the mission the Lowers have put on The Metro over the years. This partnership has the potential to not only improve one of the city’s mostloved restaurants but to raise the bar for the entire local restaurant landscape. It’s a win for a city working hard to develop its culinary reputation, and a win for diners.

German dermatologist Dr. Christine Schrammek developed the first “blemish balm” in 1967 for use after peels or other procedures. It was created to soothe and protect skin while offering light coverage. A couple of decades later, beauty balms became all the rage in Asia, where women loved the flawless finish. Now BB cream, reformulated for American women with a special emphasis on treatment, is the “it” product in the U.S. Bobbi Brown just launched one, following MAC, Es-
tee Lauder, Smashbox, Too Faced, Jane Iredale, Clinique, L’Oreal, Garnier, Maybelline, Dr. Jart, Stila, Origins and Boscia. The benefit to BB cream is that it’s a cross between skin care and makeup, said Beth Nicolaisen, lead color consultant at Sephora, Penn Square Mall. “It’s the best of both worlds.”

Most promise to moisturize and prime and are armed with a high SPF, but, depending on the cream, many also have ingredients to even out skin tone, lighten dark spots, correct redness and brighten skin. Some control oil and mattify. Others are water-resistant. Most offer light coverage, though Jane Iredale’s is a full coverage mineral BB cream. The biggest difference between BB cream and tinted moisturizer is the level of SPF and the lack of primer, skin tone correctors, antioxidants and skin treatment, Nicolaisen said. Most BB creams are available in at least two shades, but some such as Boscia have chameleon ingredients that adjust to match most skin tones. “I myself am a huge BB cream fan,” Nicolaisen said, adding that it’s perfect for those days when you don’t want full-face makeup but you want to look pulled together. These dream creams make it easy to get out the door in flash. “Most of the customers have really liked BB creams,” she said. “I hardly ever see one returned.” But seldom is one cream all things to all women. Beauty routines need individual attention. Women with dry skin may fi nd they still need a moisturizer, even though BB creams tout hydration as one of the benefits. Additional sunscreen may be necessary, depending on the day’s activities and the product’s SPF factor. Light coverage can get a boost from an application of powder. While BB creams are new to most American women, many companies have all-in-one products that offer similar results and benefits. Story continues on page 33

“Beauty balm has become the new buzzword, I think, for things that are already in place,” said Alex Mendez-Kelley, owner of The MakeUp Bar. Products by Nars, for example, inject skin benefiting ingredients in makeup but without the BB label. Makeup artists tend to gravitate toward these types of products because they’re effective and easy to use, she said. Convenience coupled with results makes these creams especially appealing for women to use at home, too. Prices range from about $8 to almost $50. A little product goes a long way and most have a good feel to them, Mendez-Kelley said. With so many choices, where do you start when it comes to fi nding a beauty balm? Ask sales people, makeup artists and dermatologists for their advice. Read online reviews and take away information pertinent to your needs and wants.
