A

s you’ll certainly read in this issue’s profile of Rachel McAdams (shown in the photo above), the Canadian actress gave Oklahoma a glowing review when I spoke to her a few days ago in Los Angeles. Last year, McAdams spent time in Bartlesville filming Terrence Malick’s upcoming and still-unnamed project with Ben Affleck, Rachel Weisz, Amanda Peet and Javier Bardem, and Malick took his cast to places such as Woolaroc and the Prairie National Wild Horse Refuge, giving them a sense of the awe-inspiring natural beauty that can be found in our state. McAdams told me this with six other reporters gathered around a table, and I’m certain it is not the first time she’s told of her experience — the horse refuge clearly made an impact with her. Those reporters might not incorporate this Oklahoma anecdote into their stories, but it will stick in their minds that this personable and talented actress had nice things to say about our home state. The Malick film probably represents the greatest concentration of Hollywood talent to descend on Oklahoma since the “Twister” crew touched down in 1995, and we stand to reap the benefits of A-list actors having great experiences while filming here. They will take these stories back to friends and colleagues, and the next time the Oklahoma Film and Music Office makes a deal to bring a major production to the state, they will have no problem rounding out the cast. McAdams’ experience is not an isolated one — participants in the deadCenter Film Festival regularly return to their home bases with stories about their great experiences in Oklahoma. But every time I hear it from a new person with the influence to spread the word, I know we are on the right track.

Ke$ha is just a normal pop star

M

ack Hawkins isn’t afraid of a challenge. A couple of weeks ago, the Okie audio engineer was holding his own inside a $30 million recording studio in Nashville. His mission was to help record and produce tracks for an upcoming Flaming Lips collaborative album featuring Oklahoma City’s quintessential freak rockers and the pop star Ke$ha. You might know her from the Get $leazy Tour which had a sold-out stop in Tulsa and for her single “Tik Tok” which was legally downloaded more than 5 million times and was illegally downloaded several million times more over. “She’s totally normal,” Hawkins said. “Just like you or I, but she has the crazy girl stigma attached to her. You can go to the Blue Note and pick out another girl that’s probably crazier than her.” Hawkins also said Ke$ha was open to weird recording ideas and experimentation, which helps explain Hawkins’ story about the dollar sign tattoo Ke$ha gave Flaming Lips roadie Matt Duckworth within 30 minutes of meeting him. After the ink had dried, Hawkins began working to combine several song ideas into two tracks. This resulted in a call-and-reply between Coyne and Ke$ha, which involved the Lips frontman getting Ke$ha to mimic a barking dog. At one point there was even a who-can-sing-higher contest between Lips multi-instrumentalist Steven Drozd and the pop star. For the record, Drozd was victorious. “We just hopped in there and immediately got to work,” Hawkins said. “No hang ups or anything like that. It was a very fluid, streamlined process.” Hawkins got the opportunity to record all this madness in Nashville because of Coyne’s enthusiasm for recording and technological shortcomings. In early December 2011, Coyne needed someone with knowledge of Pro Tools audio production software. After receiving a phone call, Hawkins arrived at Coyne’s house and discovered a problem with the rocker’s computer. “I look, and it’s literally just a monitor,” Hawkins said. “I’m like, ‘Where’s the computer?’ “ Hawkins ran home, returned with his own computer and got to work. Hawkins’ adventure is an example of my favorite type of success story. The most interesting opportunities in life appear at random. He couldn’t have planned on making a trip to Nashville to record one of the biggest names in pop. He definitely wasn’t planning on Ke$ha being so pleased with his recording prowess that she put him in charge of helping build a recording studio in her Nashville home. Hawkins said a big part of his success with the Ke$ha session was working hard during his stay as a music production major at ACM@UCO. He’s taking a semester off to keep up with the Lips and the several other music projects he’s producing. Do yourself a favor and follow him on Twitter @ MountMckinley. LACEY LETT

If it gets cold outside, warm up here

C

ozy. Comfortable. Warm. Snuggly. This is how I strive to feel when it’s cold outside. In the winter, I crave hot cocoa, soup, warm sandwiches, and chili. It just feels good, and red wine makes me warm right up. This is the time of year I become a prisoner of war under my three blankets, three pillows and three layers of clothing and sitting on the couch under the blanket watching Brad Pitt’s latest movie, “Moneyball,” seems like the only viable option. I’m telling myself now to snap out of it — don’t let the winter run over you and create an antisocial, lazy human. There’s more to life than Brad Pitt being the only source of (pretend) social interaction. The wintertime glory of sitting back in a comfy couch with a cocktail and a fireplace can be experienced in many bars and restaurants around the city. I call this wintertime excursion cozy cocktail time.

LACEY LETT Her ongoing column, “A Night Owl” is focused on what’s going on in nightlife news for LookatOKC.

Rococo Northpark & Rococo on Pennsylvania Avenue Both of the Rococo locations include cozy fireplaces. The Rococo on Penn is wonderful because there’s a nice couch to relax with the girls and have a few good cocktails. The Rococo Northpark (shown in photo at right) location’s robust red decor has one main centerpiece, a floor-to-ceiling fireplace, so no matter where you sit you’ll have a lovely, romantic view of the fire.

Red Rock Canyon Grill Not only my favorite patio, but also my favorite fireplace happens to be at Red Rock Canyon Grill on Lake Hefner. Although this patio is outside, it blazes so furiously that it will definitely keep you warm. I love to just sit around it and have a glass of wine, and with the table wait that can ensue on the weekends; it’s a nice alternative to just standing in the cold.

Warren Theatre Whether waiting in a gigantic line to see the latest “Harry Potter” or “Twilight” at Warren Theatres in Moore, your best bet is to wait by a nice fireplace located just outside their lobby. I never thought I’d hear of a fireplace in a movie theatre, but then again, I never thought I’d be served full meals while watching a movie at a theatre, either. Other enjoyable weekend spots with fireplaces are Bedlam Bar BQ in north Oklahoma City, Full Circle Bookstore inside 50 Penn Place and West Restaurant on North Western Ave. Going out on the weekend doesn’t have to mean a keg party or dance party. Sometimes just good conversation and a cozy cocktail make everything better.

‘EMOTIONAL TRAFFIC’ – TIM MCGRAW

fter two years of waiting and a long-in-coming legal drama, fans of Tim McGraw have the chance to get caught in the country music superstar’s “Emotional Traffic,” his final album for Curb Records, the independent label he started his career with in the early 1990s. Released Tuesday, “Emotional Traffic” doesn’t live up to McGraw’s declaration of “my best album ever” boldly stickered on the CD case. Nor does it give credence to Curb’s lawsuit claim that the album didn’t have enough potential singles to warrant release. To this listener’s ear, the truth exists somewhere between those two extremes, and “Emotional Traffic” sounds like quintessential McGraw. In fact, current climbing single “Better Than I Used to Be” bears a bit too

strong a sonic resemblance to his 2004 smash “Live Like You Were Dying.” Despite Curb’s contention the album was recorded too early and would seem dated, “Emotional Traffic” is packed with the huge arena-filling countryrockers, sentimental crossover-ready countrypop ballads and intriguing boundary-pushing experiments McGraw has long favored. In fact, thanks to Tim Tebow, the earnest religious anthem “Touchdown Jesus” has new relevance, and McGraw, an avid sports fan, digs deep to send the metaphor soaring into the end zone. The Louisiana native opens the album with the tour de force heartbreaker “Halo” that, like the best of his hits, matches cutting lyrics with equally aggressive electric and lapsteel guitars. But the momentum dribbles away by the second track,

the insipid soft-rock love song “Right Back at Ya.” From there, “Emotional Traffic” veers a bit erratically between hits and misses. More than a year after it

topped the charts, it’s still great fun to sing along with the danceable “Felt Good on My Lips,” and McGraw and his superstar wife, Faith Hill, show off their easy chemistry and vocal harmony with their lively cover of Dee Ervin’s R&B classic “One Part, Two Part.” “Only Human,” the country singer’s anticipated duet with R&B star NeYo, doesn’t have much going for it apart from the interesting contrast in their voices, with the lyrics taking the well-worn path of countless other empowerment anthems. McGraw turns down a similar road with “I Will Not Fall Down,” which he co-wrote withMartina McBride and the Warren Brothers; it is the only track to bear his songwriting credit. With “Emotional Traffic” out of its jam, it will be interesting to see what musical route McGraw sets now that he is free to pull away from Curb. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Editor

‘THE STARS ARE INDIFFERENT TO ASTRONOMY’ – NADA SURF

hrow the new Nada Surf album in the player or on the turntable and you’ve got summer in January. It’s true that this alternative trio from New York often writes lyrics as bleak as bare trees against a gray winter sky, but its stock-in-trade is setting words of sweet sorrow and restless longing against a blue-sky backdrop of pulse-quickening hooks and bright choruses better than anyone this side of the Beatles, the Byrds or Big Star. Singer/songwriter/ guitarist Matthew Caws, bassist Daniel Lorca and drummer Ira Elliot work their power-pop mannafrom-heaven magic again with “The Stars Are Indifferent to Astronomy,” the band’s seventh studio album and their first collection of new originals since 2008’s “Lucky.”

Program opener “Clear Eye Clouded Mind” is a bracing blast of full-tilt tunefulness containing the cosmic line from which the album title is taken, sung by Caws in a high, earnest voice reminiscent of Byrds frontman Roger McGuinn back when he called himself Jim. “Waiting for Something” lives up to its title with appropriately yearning lyrics sung over busy, edgy, excellent electric guitar accompaniment, while “When I Was Young” starts out as a contemplative acoustic ballad and builds gradually into an expansive electric guitar anthem that sounds at times like one of Paul Simon’s early, moodily cinematic compositions. The theme of getting older also threads through tunes such as the jangle-poppy “Teenage Dreams,” as Caws sings, “Moved to a tear by a subway break-dancer / It’s never too

late for teenage dreams,” and the breezy and upbeat “Looking Through,” during which he bemoans “Every birthday candle / That ever got blown out.” But even in middle-age, Caws shows no signs of losing his youthful sense of musical and emotional wonder.

‘CYRK’ – CATE LE BON

elsh singer Cate Le Bon’s first showcase seems, in retrospect, like an artful bit of misdirection: She delivered the icy R&B female part on Neon Neon’s “I Lust You,” a 2008 electropop duet with her mentor, Super Furry Animals leader Gruff Rhys. Following her much darker 2009 debut disc, “Me Oh My,” Le Bon’s “Cyrk” sounds like a recently unearthed artifact, a collection of irresistibly wry and playful ballads and bashers that, much like the Super Furries or Gorky’s Zygotic Mynci, delivers a Cardiff-bred take on late-1960s psych-rock. Specifically, Le Bon’s vocal timbre suggests Nico with more range — she could easily get away with putting a banana on the cover of “Cyrk” given

the mournful, accented delivery on the stately ballad “Puts Me to Work.” But Le Bon is not nearly as narcotic as Nico, opening “Cyrk” with the winking magnificence of “Falcon Eyed,” which takes breaks from a 4/4 punk rhythm to indulge in a waltzing, genre-bent, Bee Geesreferencing refrain: “It’s the curl in his hair and his falcon-eyed stare / He is more than a woman to me.” The singer’s voice can serve as the strong center in a storm, as it does on the title track, or as the soft counterpoint to menacing Farfisa organ attacks (“Julia”). The production is refreshingly raw, letting “Cyrk” alternately evoke longforgotten garage rock or the early 1970s British folk movement. Le Bon lets her accent grow thick to envelop “The Man I Wanted,” possibly the most Velvets/Nico-style ballad on the album. The sole credited songwriter

‘Man on a Ledge’ has edgy moments

T

he high-stakes action-thriller “Man on a Ledge” effectively keeps viewers on the edge of their seats for much of its run time before eventually slipping into conventional cinematic territory. With its unique if far-fetched premise, the debut feature from Asger Leth, who previously directed the gritty Haitian gang documentary “Ghosts of Cite Soleil,” also boasts a twisty story, which he effectively unveils in tantalizing little pieces. Of course, the mystery only really surprises if you haven’t seen the too-revealing trailers for the film. Australian actor Sam Worthington stars as Nick Cassidy, a former New York Citypoliceman wrongly convicted of stealing a $40 million diamond from coldblooded businessman David Englander(University of Oklahoma alumnus Ed Harris). Imprisoned in Sing Sing, the ex-cop is a favorite punching bag among the inmates, and it seems everyone except his loyal former partner Mike Ackerman (Anthony Mackie) has forsaken him. Cassidy readily admits to the prison psychiatrist that he has considered suicide. When he is furloughed to attend his father’s fu-

neral, Cassidy tangles with his younger brother Joey (personal favorite Jamie Bell) and then makes a breathtaking escape. A few days later, he checks into the historic Roosevelt Hotel, eats a lavish meal that could be his last, wipes the room clean of fingerprints and then steps outside onto the narrow ledge 200 feet above 45th Street in midtown Manhattan. When police negotiator Jack Dougherty (Edward Burns) arrives on the scene, Cassidy demands to speak instead with Dougherty’s rival, Lydia Mercer (Elizabeth Banks), whose life, confidence and standing with the department have been shaken since an encounter with a jumper that went terribly wrong. Mercer quickly realizes Cassidy isn’t your typical jumper, and as she learns his identity and listens to his pleas of innocence, she suspects he has more in mind than just being heard. While Cassidy seizes the attention of people on the street and an ambulance-chasing TV journalist (Kyra Sedgwick), brother Joey and his faithful girlfriend, Angie (TV star Genesis Rodriguez in her winning bigscreen debut), carry out a fantastic scheme to prove in dramatic fashion that Cassidy has been falsely accused.

Go-to action guy Worthington ably leads the strong, diverse cast. He creates a character a bit more intriguing and worthy of cheering on than the generic ciphers he played in “Avatar” and “Clash of the Titans,” and he and Banks forge solid chemistry from opposite sides of the hotel window. They filmed their scenes on the ledge on a real-life strip of the Roosevelt Hotel’s exterior that is actually 21 stories above the ground, and their fear and caution get the audience’s adrenaline sympathetically pumping. Safe on the ground, Burns and Mackie are as stalwart as ever, while Harris gleefully chews scenery as the baddie Occupy Wall Street supporters will particularly love to hate. But Bell and Rodriguez nearly steal the film as smart-mouth lovers on a secret mission, bringing just the right amount of sexy banter and comic relief to the proceedings. Eventually, the action becomes too grounded in the usual action-movie cliches we’ve seen so many times. But between the realistic scares of the ledge and the taut suspense of the story, “Man on a Ledge” reaches entertaining heights before the drop-off. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

Mixing pulp, philosophy makes mess of ‘Grey’

D

irector/co-writer Joe Carnahan’s attempts to mix pulp and philosophy just make a muddled mess of “The Grey” For the grim survival thriller, “The ATeam” helmer reunites with late-career action star Liam Neeson, one of the few actors I can think of who can believably play a deeply depressed sharpshooter who spouts poetry one moment and punches a wolf in the face the next. Carnahan also gets stalwart performances from his supporting cast of where-have-I-seen-that-guybefore character actors, who with Neeson braved hipdeep snow, cutting winds and subzero temperatures to give the film its striking authenticity. But the filmmaker either has no idea what kind of movie he really wants to make or doesn’t have the wherewithal to pick a tone and stick with it. “The Grey” plays too bleak and talky to qualify as a guiltypleasure action-horror flick, but it relies too much on stock characters, laughably fake computer-generated wolves and gruesome nature-as-slasher-villain death scenes to be taken seriously as a meaningful existential drama. Neeson plays Ottway, a reticent marksman hired to shoot the wolves that prowl too close to the remote

Alaskan oil refinery where he is an outcast among the rest of the workers: ex-cons, fugitives and others he deems not fit for the rest of mankind. Devastated by the loss of his wife (Anne Openshaw), whom he remembers in many hazy flashbacks, Ottway teeters on the brink of suicide, but changes his mind when he hears the plaintive howl of a wolf. Instead, he heads to Anchorage with a group of fellow roughnecks, but the small, rickety plane crashes violently on the way. The brutal crash — one of the movie’s most visceral action sequences — leaves just Ottway and a half-dozen others alive and stranded in the unforgiving wilderness. Ottway soon proves he will fight fiercely to survive and emerges as the de facto leader of the ragtag group. The survivors include the standard action characters, including the kind family man Talget (Dermot Mulroney, almost unrecognizable in thick glasses and a thicker beard), the sensitive introvert Hendrick (Dallas Roberts), the quiet, gentle giant Burke (Nonso Anozie) and the antagonistic ex-con Diaz (Frank Grillo), who challenges Ottway’s leadership until they come to an understanding. All of these actors, especially Grillo and Neeson, get some meaty scenes in which they contemplate the harshness of nature,

question the meaning of life or die spectacularly. While the tundra poses many dangers, including a dearth of food, water and shelter from the frigid cold, one of nature’s perils soon emerges as the deadliest: a huge pack of marauding wolves that begins picking off the crash survivors one by one. Unfortunately, the wolves have been augmented with CGI so cut-rate it makes the digitally crafted werewolves in the “Twilight” movies look like documentary footage by comparison. But the canines’ shoddy appearance isn’t nearly as ridiculous or offensive as their use as a cheap plot device. Carnahan’s wolves have an interesting habit of surprise attacking just as the plot begins to lag. They then snap threateningly at the heels of the men, almost catch them in their slathering maws and then retreat to yowl until Ottway and Co. have the chance to build a bonfire, muster their strength or deal with some other more pressing hazard. Filmed on location in British Columbia, Canada, Masanobu Takayanagi’s cinematography effectively sets the scene, making you practically shiver with the biting cold. But “The Grey” just doesn’t have a story worth getting lost in.

‘ALBERT NOBBS’

‘Albert Nobbs’ does not dress for success

R

oger Ebert famously created the term “idiot plot” to describe a film in which the central story hinges on every character being completely clueless for it to progress beyond the opening credits. For all its good intentions and the clear commitment of Academy Award nominee Glenn Close, “Albert Nobbs” depends entirely on an idiot plot to convey the story of a woman cross-dressing to survive in the dire job market of 19th-century Ireland. Close’s Nobbs is a waiter in a posh Irish hotel, a prim and reserved player in the daily drama of the establishment. With a carefully crafted veneer, Nobbs is the picture of solemn propriety and order, but the bowler hat, formal wear and girded physique are the protective armor of a woman who, ostensibly in order to avoid destitution, must hide her true gender. Nobbs has lived with this ruse for so long that she cannot remember her birth name. The large staff, including the constantly soused house doctor (Brendan Gleeson) and young maid Helen (Mia Wasikowska), are completely convinced, but when the proprietor hires Hubert Page for a painting job and forces Nobbs to share quarters with the handyman, the waiter’s subterfuge begins to unravel. Janet McTeer as a woman in similar straits but who, because of her physical stature, is able to pass as a brawny laborer. And yet McTeer is ultimately no more convincing than Close, both of whom received Oscar nominations for their performances, but neither actress is doing her best work here. Conscientious viewers will ask whether Close is simply too well-known as an actress, too obviously recognizable from 30 years of film work, to pull the wool over moviegoers’ eyes in the same way her character gets one over on every single person in her life. But McTeer, a lesser-known actress with an impressive career of her own, is clearly a woman from her first appearance in “Albert Nobbs.” It does not take a designedto-shock revelation, one that unfortunately recalls the most memorable scene in the 1985 teen comedy “Just One of the Guys,” to know the truth about Hubert Page, let alone Albert Nobbs. Close, who also receives a screenwriting credit, originally played Nobbs 30 years ago in an off-Broadway adaptation of George Moore’s short story “The Singular Life of Albert Nobbs,” and spent the next three decades trying to get the film made. There is no question that “Albert Nobbs” has worthy

LOOKATOKC.COM

points to make about gender identity and societal repression — this is no mere Victorian retelling of “Bosom Buddies.” But “Albert Nobbs” is possibly a textbook example of literature that cannot effectively translate to film, or perhaps a case in which an actress became so protective of a project that she could not see past a key limitation. But unconvincing gender depictions are not the only detriments to the film’s success. Nobbs is inspired by Hubert’s happy life with a wife (Bronagh Gallagher) and home to pursue her own idyllic future with Helen, who is currently embroiled in a tempestuous courtship with shiftless boiler worker Joe (Aaron Johnson). Not only must Close contend with making a gender-based disguise convincing, she must also effectively try to woo an actress who, at 22, is nearly a third her age. These problems create a steep uphill climb for director Rodrigo Garcia, who beautifully directed Wasikowska in the first season of HBO’s “In Treatment.” Sadly for the many talented people involved, Garcia and his cast are unable to make “Albert Nobbs” play like anything greater than a Hallmark Hall of Fame television movie with flashes of nudity and profanity. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘HAYWIRE’

Rating: R (Some violence) Running time: 1 hours, 33 minutes Starring: Gina Carano, Ewan McGregor, Michael Douglas, Channing Tatum, Michael Angarano, Bill Paxton.

***

‘Haywire’ debuts a new action star

G

ina Carano has a face that can hold a Hollywood closeup and a fist that can hold your nose until it comes clean off. Steven Soderbergh cast this mixed martial arts star/model in “Haywire” and surrounded her with experienced actors because he wanted to see an action movie starring a woman who could credibly beat the living daylights out of legions of guys who got in her way. No “Bourne” or “Bond” quick cuts and shaky cameras to hide the speed of the punches, the athleticism of the brawlers. Carano holds her own in this sauntering, multicity film that’s slyly funny at times as various men — Ewan McGregor, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender — in the spy game underestimate agent Mallory Kane (Carano). Or don’t underestimate her. Kane, working as a private contractor for Kenneth (McGregor), has been set up. She’s trying to figure out who betrayed her. Was it Kenneth? The government guy, Coblenz (Michael Douglas), who uses Kenneth’s

team? Rodrigo, the mysterious Spaniard (Antonio Banderas)? Screenwriter Lem Dobbs (“The Limey,” “The Score”) frames much of the story in flashback, as Kane takes off with the civilian (Michael Angarano) who tried to save her from a Tatum beatdown in a diner. “Put your seat belt on,” she orders. “You’re going to fix my arm while we drive.” They make their getaway, and Kane tells her story and makes the kid memorize details so that he can go to the authorities when they’re caught. She expects to be caught. Heck, she kind of wants it. Soderbergh’s innate cynicism and lack of empathy for his characters bubbles through, as it did most notably in “Contagion,” and that is cool, though the better label is “chilly.” That means we’re not as engaged to Kane as we might be, that there’s little warmth to the character’s romantic partners or even to her scenes with her rich novelist ex-Marine dad (Bill Paxton). Compare this to the action pictures produced by Luc Besson (“Taken,” “The Transporter”),

in which you invest in the characters and feel there’s more at stake. And the script isn’t exactly packed with snappy dialogue: “I’ll take a rain check.” “This is Ireland. It won’t be long.” But the fights are epic. The movies, too often, make killing people too easy. Bad guys or victims are dispatched as plot devices. Not here. Carano takes realistic punches, gets foes into grim, life-or-death chokeholds and covers her face in makeup to hide the bruises and split lips. The chases, on foot, also have a veracity the movies rarely attempt — none of this leaping into the void, relying on an awning you don’t know is there to break your fall. Yes, there have been action heroines before, but Carano brings an arresting screen presence and an instant credibility — she’s beautiful but solidly built — to screen action that’s been missing. Who knew the new Jean-Claude Van Damme, Chuck Norris and Jet Li would be a woman?

“Terry took us out to the wild horse reserve. It’s an amazing place, it’s like ... a nursing home for wild horses,” McAdams said, laughing at how emotional she gets when talking about the refuge. “It was so lovely, and so many of the horses have never been touched by humans. But anyway, it was incredible, being out with the wild buffalo — it’s really an extraordinary place, I’ve never experienced anything like that before. At the time, the tallgrass was at its peak, so just the sound of that in the wind, it was so... there was something spiritual about it.” McAdams, 33, is reaching her own peak, having built a strong career by splitting her time between event films, romances and the smaller independent films that give the Canada native a chance to stretch artistically. After appearing in the Canadian cult series “Slings and Arrows,” McAdams quickly caught attention for her roles in “Mean Girls,” “The Notebook” and “Wedding Crashers.” More recent projects such as Guy Ritchie’s “Sherlock Holmes” films, “State of Play” and the Oscar-nominated “Midnight in Paris” cemented McAdams’ status as an actress who could hold her own in both brazenly commercial fare and intelligent, adult dramas. “Midnight in Paris” gave McAdams the opportunity to work with Woody Allen, whose one-film-per-year work ethic often produces uneven results. But “Midnight in Paris,” which co-starred Owen Wilson, Sheen, and Marion Cotillard, became the most commercially successful film of Allen’s career, and is now in contention for a “best picture” Oscar. It’s really exciting,” she said. “It was, like, his 40th film and it was wonderful, so amazing, because we had full access to places that are usually swarming with tourists. I’m so elated that he’s getting so much attention for it.” For “The Vow,” a romance based on a true story, McAdams plays Paige, an artist happily married to music engineer Leo (Channing Tatum) when both are injured in a freak car accident. After she regains consciousness, Paige remembers nothing about the couple’s four-year marriage, forcing Leo to explore ways to bring her memory back and face the prospect that his wife might never fall in love with him again. McAdams and Tatum spent time with the real-life couple who inspired “The Vow,” Kim and Krickitt Carpenter, and McAdams conducted her own research into the possible outcomes of such trauma. In essence, McAdams had to approach the role of Paige as if she were playing two separate roles, since the Paige who emerges from a coma scarcely resembles the character in the first scenes. “The more you remind somebody of something they don’t remember, the more you push them away,” McAdams said. “Just the very act of trying to get someone back actually makes the chasm between you greater. “I mean, what I found most interesting at the end of the day is that people who suffer from brain traumas such as this, where your memory is completely erased — the tape is erased and it’s not necessarily going to come back — they will actually find their way, nine times out of 10, back to their old ways. Back on the same career path, back with similar kinds of people,” she said. “So it was kind of like playing two different people who amalgamate in a way, and she comes back around to a more whole version of herself. So, it was fun to layer the two and come up with something completely different in the end.”

Signing shows owners are willing to spend

S

am Presti spoke at length last week about his chief goal as the general manager of the Oklahoma City Thunder. It’s one that hasn’t changed in the franchise’s four years of existence. At a news conference announcing guard Russell Westbrook’s contract extension, however, Presti offered a reminder that his main mission has been to build a team that, above all, has long term sustainability. “Nothing really changes in terms of what our vision for this organization is,” Presti said. “This is just another step in that direction.” Consider it the third of a five-step program. Step one was inking Kevin Durant to a long-term deal. Step two was acquiring and extending the contract of Kendrick Perkins. Now comes the most critical part of the process. Steps four and five will be re-signing James Harden and Serge Ibaka. They’re now the most critical cogs to the franchise’s ability to sustain success. Many have wondered over the past two seasons how the Thunder could possibly retain its core, which quickly became cluttered with talented parts. But the picture finally is beginning to crystallize. And in between pre-written paragraphs praising Westbrook, Presti on Sunday provided the most telling answer as to how it will be done. “Days like today are made possible because of our owner, Clay Bennett, who’s shown unwavering support in our efforts to build and sustain an elite basketball organization,” Presti said. “We’re fortunate to have an owner as committed as Mr. Bennett is.” Translation: Bennett is prepared to dig deep. He and his partners who make up theProfessional Basketball Club, LLC are primed to back up the Brinks truck to two more houses if need be and do what it takes to continue to compete. That would mean this Thunder team could soon be headed into luxury tax territory. But when that day comes, it will be viewed as a justifiable business expense because the building blocks that have been put in place have been model pieces. A major part of the organization’s vision has been to

identify and insert certain types of player. The front office has aimed to bring in players who can grow together, players who are hard workers and have high character and a commitment to winning and community. That’s precisely what the current core embodies, and the brain trust appears ready to ensure it remains intact. Though he declined to take credit for it, Westbrook had a direct hand in helping the franchise complete that objective. The explosive All-Star could have held out for a larger contract. Had he been selected to a second All-NBA Team this season, he could have demanded the “super max” contract that pays players whose performance exceed their rookie scale contracts 30 percent of the salary cap. Instead, Westbrook signed now and

showed he is content with the regular maximum of 25 percent of the salary cap, roughly $80 million over five seasons. To average Americans, that’s no big sacrifice. To pro ballplayers, it’s a difference of about $15 million. And to the Thunder, it could be the difference of whether Harden or Ibaka, or both, stay or go. “That wasn’t my objective,” Westbrook said. “My objective was to find a spot where I’m happy and where I have an opportunity to win championships.” What about Ibaka and Harden? “Sam and them guys will find a way to figure things out,” Westbrook said. “I’m not sure how that’s going to work. But I know now we have a great team and hopefully we can keep everybody together.”

OKLAHOMA CITY THUNDER

29 2011-2012 NBA SEASON

At some point, the Oklahoma City Thunder will have to say goodbye to a part of the talented young core, but that time is a long way away.

he ink hardly had dried on Russell Westbrook’s contract extension before some Thunder fans began fretting about the next two in line. A signing that should have been celebrated as a deal that secured the long-term future of two of the league’s top players — Westbrook and Kevin Durant— somehow became a cause for concern. Locally, the lingering question has been, will the Thunder now be able to keepJames Harden and Serge Ibaka? It’s the NBA’s version of borrowing trouble. Someday, Oklahoma City surely will be forced to bid adieu to someone in its talented young core. But now is not the time to worry over how imminent that day might be. SEE REST OF STORY ON PAGE 32

2011-2012 NBA SEASON

Harden and Ibaka are eligible for extensions this summer. If deals aren’t reached by Oct. 31, they will become restricted free agents in July 2013. That means the Thunder has their rights this season and next season, as well as the right of first refusal to match any contract offer they might receive from another team as restricted free agents. But for whatever reason, a segment of the fan base can’t seem to avoid anxiety about the future. It’s the same stuff that rattled fans in Cleveland, and it’s what’s plaguingOrlando right now. The big difference is, unlike the Thunder, the Cavs and Magic never surrounded LeBron James andDwight Howard with a stable of young complementary pieces that could grow together and sustain success. Nevertheless, James and Howard still re-signed at the end of their rookie contracts, which should be a lesson to the fearful faction in Oklahoma City. That is, the most skilled players simply don’t skip town at the end of their rookie deals. These second contracts, or first extensions, almost always get done when a team has a player worth keeping. Plenty of young players have moved teams. But since the current rookie scale contract format of two guaranteed years and two team option years started in 2005, not a single impact player has gotten away. The first-round selections that have moved on either couldn’t play (Adam Morrison), were injury prone (Sean May), no longer fit and were allowed to walk (Raymond Felton) or were traded, either for better pieces (Martell Webster, Charlie Villanuevaand Randy Foye) or to shed salary cap space (David Lee and Michael Beasley). The Thunder lost Jeff Green, the fifth overall pick in 2007, because the two sides couldn’t come to terms on an extension. But Oklahoma City traded Green to Bostonand netted Kendrick Perkins to become the low-post defensive presence the Thunder sorely lacked. Stars, though, stick with the franchise that drafted them. From the 2005 draft class, Andrew Bogut, Marvin Williams, Deron Williams, Chris Paul, Andrew Bynum and Danny Granger all remained with their teams following their rookie deals. Only Paul and Williams have since departed. From the 2006 class, Andrea Bargnani, LaMarcus Aldridge, Brandon Roy (though now retired due to injury), Rudy Gay and Rajon Rondo all re-upped. From the 2007 class, Durant, Al Horford, Mike Conley, Joakim Noah and Thaddeus Young stayed aboard. And so far, the three best players in the 2008 class — Westbrook, Derrick Rose, Kevin Love — have resigned with their original teams. Obviously, the Thunder can’t continue to disburse $80 million deals. But who else on the Thunder can command anywhere near that chunk of change? Besides, we’ve watched the Thunder front office build a wonderfully layered team over the past two years, which could offset the burden of anyone else unexpectedly approaching that tax bracket. Second-year center Cole Aldrich is now being groomed to supplant Nazr Mohammednext season. And though it hasn’t been mentioned anywhere, it’s not absurd to think a much cheaper Aldrich very well could be the player who’s been penciled in to replace Perkins as opposed to the team paying him $9 million in the final year of his deal. Also, despite many questioning the selection of Reggie Jackson in last year’s draft, the season-ending injury to Eric Maynor illustrates clearly how Jackson is now the next point guard in line. We all know there isn’t another Harden or Ibaka waiting in the wings. But, remember, Thunder GM Sam Presti started in San Antonio. He was there when the Spurs built a dynasty not by overpaying to keep talent, but by identifying two or three stars to build around and filling in the gaps with complementary pieces that could play a role. By now, it’s safe to say Westbrook, Harden and Durant are the future. They get dibs on the dough, and everyone else must fall in line. Spend too much time stressing over who fits where, though, and you’ll miss out on a pretty good basketball team.

Russell Westbrook is averaging 20.8 points per game so far this year while shooting 45.6 percent from the field. Against Golden State on Jan 27, Westrbook played just over 41 minues and scored 29 points. Photo by CHRIS LANDSBERGER, The Oklahoman

G AMING 2012

I

t is widely accepted: from both a technological and cultural standpoint, 2011 was a massive year for gaming. Last year saw a slew of trilogy finishers, from the brutal lands of Helghan in “Killzone 3” to the cinematic and thrilling action of “Uncharted 3: Drake’s Deception.” RPGs such as the epic “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” and the gruelingly difficult “Dark Souls” pushed their respective consoles and their players through new limits in both their storytelling and gameplay, helping to solidify the growth of a prevalent genre in the video gaming industry. Plus, with the mixture of puzzling gameplay seen in “Portal 2” and the stealthy assassinations of Assassin’s Creed: Revelations, it is clear that 2011 saw an evolution in gameplay. Having these highly successful titles from last year in mind, what can we expect for 2012? It is already a given that this year will herald the expected mass of party games for the much anticipated WiiU, and indeed another installment of Activision’s numbingly popular “Call of Duty” franchise. Will these titles live up to the flurry of gaming wonder which 2011 brought us? More importantly, will 2012 bring us improvements on such behemoth titles as Skyrim and Uncharted 3? With new boundary-pushing consoles being released this year and an already exciting line up of titles set to instill mad finger mashing in even the most casual of gamers, such exhilaration could make this year a promising sequel after an already stellar 2011.

‘GRAND THEFT AUTO V’

W

idely regarded as one of the most popular and controversial video game franchises of all time, Rockstar is set to release the fifth main episode in its series in the fall of 2012: “Grand Theft Auto V.” With a return to the sunny and fictional representation of Los Angeles from the final and wonderfully successful PS2 title “Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas,” “GTA V” places you in the massive locale of Los Santos in the feet of the stillto-be-named main character. The game’s story and details are shrouded in secrecy by Rockstar, but from what has already been said and hinted at, it is clear that this game is going to be huge. From the rabid YouTubers throwing theories in every direction to the frustrating hush-hush of the dev team, little has been confirmed in terms of story or gameplay. However, if the bridge between San Andreas and “Grand Theft Auto IV” is anything to go by, this title will almost certainly be a contender for one of the best games released this year.

‘FINAL FANTASY XIII-2’

R

PGs peaked last year in the intensely bountiful world of “Skyrim” and the addictively difficult dungeon crawling experience of Dark Souls. “Final Fantasy XIII,” released in 2010, was widely polarizing for critics and gamers alike, who both praised the story but were critical of the game’s fall from the ‘golden age’ of the JRPG. This year, Square Enix have taken it upon themselves to right the wrongs and placate the masses of RPG nuts quarrelling over what really makes for the classic Final Fantasy experience with their sequel, “Final Fantasy XIII-2.” With the main story being set four years after the original, we control Serah, the sister of the main character from “FFXIII.” With gorgeous locations and graphics, as expected from Square Enix, we are given a time travelling adventure through new and familiar landscapes. It is clear that the development team has taken every criticism into consideration. Interaction with environments and characters return, and an entire collection of

mini-games that are vaguely reminiscent of the fanboy’s beloved “Final Fantasy VII” are set to provide a wealth of extra content. All in all, “FFXIII-2” appears to be taking on and sorting out what seemed wrong with “FFXIII,” and by doing so can almost certainly confirm a vibrant and bountiful RPG experience set to mend the division that the latter title created.

‘BIOSHOCK INFINITE’

W

ith the story incorporating Ayn Rand’s philosophies combined with a desolate and submerged dystopian setting, “Bioshock” quickly became one of 2007’s most unique releases. After much strained waiting and overwrought delays, the third game of the series, “Bioshock Infinite,” is set for a mid-2012 release. Neither a prequel nor sequel, Infinite moves far away from the bleak but mystical underwater city of Rapture to the fantastical and exceptional floating city of Columbia, which holds a strong neo-steampunk feel. Maintaining the blended first-person shooter and RPG feels, Infinite finally looks set to be a gorgeous and invigorating gaming environment while preserving elements of the familiar choice-based story system for a compelling experience.

‘TOMB RAIDER’

V

ery much a staple in the videogame industry, “Tomb Raider” and the character of Lara Croft have both become a much beloved series and a prominent persona in the minds of many gamers to this day. 2012 sees the fourth generation of the platforming and puzzling adventure experience, with a revamp of the titular character and a striking graphical upheaval. Promising new survival elements and a wealth of emotional and physical challenges, 2012’s “Tomb Raider” looks to be a rather gritty episode of the long-spanning series, with hugely realistic environments and gameplay.

G AMING 2012 ‘CALL OF DUTY 9’

W

ith “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, “fans of the franchise got what they wanted, which was a wholly familiar gaming experience, albeit with several new features implemented in an effort to achieve some form of innovation. Being one of 2011’s biggest releases, one can expect the confirmed ninth installment, set to be released this year, to have an entirely similar effect. Although details of the game are very much just speculation at this point, it is clear through the franchise’s repeated history that 2012’s title will strike gold in the hearts of first-person shooter veterans, and newcomers to the genre will hopefully have a number of much needed updates.

‘METAL GEAR RISING: REVENGEANCE’

F

ans of Hideo Kojima’s bewilderingly epic “Metal Gear” series will remember the trepidation they felt upon laying their eyes on the controllable character of “Metal Gear Solid 2,” Raiden. Furthermore, fans will remember the excitement they felt as he was revived in MGS4 as the saga’s token ‘cyborg ninja’ character, and the sheer marvel that was experienced as his character evolved into something wonderfully outrageous. As something of a trope in Kojima’s storytelling, he decided to take this excessively brilliant paradigm and package it into a game – “Metal Gear Solid: Revengeance.” Once again we take the control of Raiden, though we are placed in a setting after the events of the fourth game, allowing us to finally command Kojima’s absurdly brilliant gameplay. Revengeance takes the form of a ‘hack ‘n slash’ game over the stealth-based system the previous titles have encompassed, and with the wickedly overthe-top gameplay footage released, it is clear that Revengeance will be an altogether eccentric and unique experience.

‘SILENT HILL: DOWNPOUR’

THE PLAYSTATION VITA

W

F

ith a disappointing decrease in quality after the move to next-gen consoles, many fans of the atmospherically disturbing horror franchise are placing their hopes on the next installment, “Silent Hill: Downpour.” Although the departure of the series’ regular composer Akira Yamaoka led to an already mixed outlook, perhaps the growingly stale movement needs a reboot. Downpour will visit new areas of the titular town and focus primarily on the new main character, escaped prisoner Murphy Pendleton. Although moving forward is always the best way to continue a successful progression, we can only hope that Downpour still maintains and successfully evolves “Silent Hill’s” uneasy horror and atmospheric desolation, and that the fan’s tension in waiting for this installment is reflected into something truly terrifying within the game’s misty town of “Silent Hill.”

‘BORDERLANDS 2’

T

he unexpectedly successful “Borderlands” from 2009 saw an entertaining cel-shaded shooting RPG hybrid, with in-game mechanics offering players a bountiful feast of features and weapons to engage. In light of the original’s success, “Borderlands 2” promises to retain the RPG feel with intense character customization and the typical quest and reward system, but also maintain a strong first-person shooter environment. With new initial characters to choose from and a wealth of skill trees to follow and loot to hunt, “Borderlands 2” could very well be a further successful bridge between two opposing genres.

ollowing the somewhat disappointing release of the extremely portable, but ultimately lacking PSP Go, a successor of Sony’s popular PSP-3000, the developers certainly had to pull out all the stops to come out on top of the handheld gaming market. 2012 heralds the release of the PlayStation Vita, an excitingly polished portable system. PSV features full backwards compatibility with everyone’s favorite PSOne Classics and downloadable content from the once-tentative PlayStation Network. The PSP-3000’s UMDs are disappointingly rendered redundant with then new release’s updated software distribution, but that does not mean the PSV will be anything short of a breath of fresh air. Coming with the much sought after second analog stick, a responsive touch-screen and upcoming trophy support for all the hardcore hoarders out there, the Vita promises to deliver a new handheld experience, and with versions of the popular “Uncharted” and shamefully entertaining “LittleBigPlanet,” the system looks to be a very nifty gaming gadget for an array of game players.

THE WII-U

P

arties with friends and nights in with families were revolutionized with the boom of motion-based gaming and ultimately the popular Nintendo console, the Wii. As other powerful systems ruled over the seventh generation of gaming, Nintendo has saw fit to update its family flagship with the first of the aptly described ‘eighth generation’ of consoles – namely, the Wii-U. Boasting 1080p high-definition graphics for the first time in Nintendo history, the new console comes with a slick and almost James Bond-worthy touch-screen controller, which will allow frantic gamers to continue their sessions after their time with the television is up. With the Wii-U presenting such family friendly features and a wealth of updated classics and new releases, you may want to think twice in 2012 before reaching for the suddenly drearylooking Monopoly board at the next family gathering.

The bar is still adorned in Rolling Stone covers, the walls teem with indie music icons from The Clash to the Pixies and Sid Vicious to Debbie Harry. Bathrooms aren’t marked with Ladies and Gentlemen or even Men and Women. Instead, the men’s room door is a wall-size shrine to Keith Richards while Joan Jett stands guard over the other. The Championship Vinyl setting was no accident. “I wanted this place to feel like a record shop,” Neel said. “I’m a music fanatic, it’s my passion. Record shops are where I grew up.” Mission accomplished. Music on vinyl was only partially about what poured out of the speakers. Breaking the plastic wrap to see whether the album would include a lyric sheet, poster or some other surprise was part of the excitement. And then there was the vinyl itself, a groovy black sea upon which a fragile stylus set sail to help illuminate the mysteries of youth. As the record aged or sat leaned one way too long or sandwiched too tightly between others it warped, leaving the stylus rocky seas to navigate. High fidelity faded but made way for a more profound sound as the listener heard beyond imperfection as the music planted itself permanently in the subconscious. The dawn of the digitally enhanced compact disc made the scratch and growl of dusty stylus on a middle-aged record sound like the spirit of youth cloaked in the reality of old age. But it didn’t take long for audiophiles to realize that was pretty cool. Vinyl has found a new, growing market. S&B Burger Joint is new vinyl produced by a couple of old vinyl fans. The menu is a burger mixtape with elements of the Green Country walk-up burger stand, the El Reno onion burger and the independent drive-ins that dotted the landscape like corporate fast fooderies do now. Hand-made, never frozen burgers with enough toppings to satisfy the finicky and the adventurous, S&B is destined to become a landmark. With its Elvis fries, a burger called the fatty and a perfect view of The Womb, counterculturists will find it irresistible. But so will families looking for a great burger on their way to a Thunder game. With two locations, this once low-fi burger joint has turned it up to 11.

Top, S&B Burger Joint co-owner Shannon Roper prepares an order at the new location, 20 NW 9th St., in Oklahoma City. The doors to the men’s and women’s restrooms are identified with pictures of Keith Richards and Joan Jett Photos by NATE BILLINGS, The Oklahoman

Tangerine

An important color, especially one charged with providing a shot of energy and encouragement to the nation, needs a descriptive name. Like Tangerine Tango — Pantone Color Institute’s color for 2012. Described as a “spirited reddish orange,” the color is being touted as the tonic that will provide the energy boost we need to recharge and move forward. That’s asking a lot of a color. Is it up to the challenge?

Tangerine Tango “Sophisticated but at the same time dramatic and seductive, Tangerine Tango is an orange with a lot of depth to it,” said Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute. “Reminiscent of the radiant shadings of a sunset, Tangerine Tango marries the vivaciousness and adrenaline rush of red with the friendliness and warmth of yellow, to form a high-visibility, magnetic hue that emanates heat and energy.” It’s just a month into the new year, and the color already is making a statement on apparel, accessories and makeup. What’s appealing about this hue is that it looks great neck to knees or paired with neutrals or other brights. Designer Tommy Hilfiger likes the color with red. Nanette Lepore mixed it with citron. Elie Tahari showed it with other shades in the orange family. Tangerine Tango is also keeping company with green, red, pink, blue and brown in a kaleidoscope of prints. “Color is the trend for spring, and the color is orange,” said DeDe Benham, co-owner of Balliets at Classen Curve. For those hesitant to fully embrace such a spirited color, the same shot of energy can come from a scarf, handbag, shoes or bracelet.. “I have that color in bangles, underwear, beaded bracelets,” said Alex Bratton, fashion director at On a Whim at Classen Curve. “I’m looking around the floor, and it’s everywhere.” More than anything, tangerine is showing up in prints, everything from geometrics to Moroccan to tiles. “If you can’t do the color all over, a print is an easy way of getting the color into your wardrobe without just relying on an accessory,” Bratton said. Tangerine Tango is almost an Indian summer color, a warm shade that’s good for all ages and looks good on most skin colors. “It’s very flattering,” she said.

FA C E T I M E Makeup is another way to embrace the color. Alex Mendez-Kelley, owner of The Makeup Bar, said a light sweep of tangerine blush will add a pop of color. “It’s a great way to show off the apples of the cheeks. ... It’s kind of a youthful look.” You might want to skip tangerine on the eyes, though. She suggests shades of peach, nectar or salmon. “Those colors are pretty on everybody.” And know that you can mix warm and cool colors together. “I think you can mix a cooler eye with a warmer lip, and I like to mix bronzers that are warm with a cool blush,” Mendez-Kelley said. Lips are the perfect feature for the color of 2012. “I think tangerine on your lips is fantastic,” she said. “It’s bright, it’s fun, and it’s happy, and I think that’s the thing for spring.” It’s not surprising that Tangerine Tango got the nod this year. Orange has grown in popularity during the past few years, and people are accustomed to seeing the color as an accent in fashion and home decor. When the economy is questionable, there’s a tendency to go back to neutrals, especially in big-ticket items, Eiseman said. But even with concerns about jobs and the economy, people are experimenting with color in fashion and home accessories, she said. Tangerine Tango is a color that’s uplifting, spirited, animated and, at the same time, a little seductive, she said. It’s about getting your adrenaline pumping, Eiseman said.
