OKC is a
funny place
H
ow much can I beat myself up for thinking of using the phrase, “There’s something funny going on around here” to discuss the influx of touring comedians in Oklahoma City? You should see the pain on my face — it’s not that pleasant, green tea-infused smile you see to your right. It’s more like Lewis Black’s expression on our cover. I’m furious that I even thought of that. Hopefully, I will have time to edit it out [Editor’s Note: I didn’t], and if not, LOOKatOKC readers will get to see just how well I can simulate dopey, E! style blather. Now that we have that self-excoriation out of the way, just consider how far Oklahoma City has come in the past two years since Jonathan Fowler of Fowler Volkswagen, BradChad Porter and other important players on the local scene began OKC Comedy and started actively campaigning to bring great standup talent to OKC. Paul F. Tompkins and Doug Benson played individual shows at City Arts Center in 2010, and since then, Maria Bamford, the returning Benson, Todd Barry, Rob Delaney, Doug Stanhope and, most recently, Kyle Kinane all played in the city. Part of this can be attributed to the growBY GEORGE LANG ing popularity of comedy podcasts, led by LOOKATOKC EDITOR the format’s superstar, Marc Maron, who GLANG@OPUBCO.COM will play Feb. 18 at City Arts Center. But BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ much of it is simply letting these comeSTATICBLOG dians know they have an audience, that Oklahoma City is not strictly a hub for the Blue Collar Comedy Tour. Some, like Tompkins, just want to know they can be guaranteed a certain number of people to show up, and then he is perfectly willing to book at date. Standup comedy is like anything else in entertainment, but more so. No form of diversion can survive in a vacuum, but comedy without a decent audience is horrific for the comedian. For years, many of them assumed there simply wasn’t a market for them in Oklahoma City. Thanks to Fowler, Porter, Spencer Hicks, Cameron Buchholtz and other comedy professionals and boosters, we can just laugh at that suggestion.

What’s on tap for local music in 2012?
T
SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE
he past is the past and the future is unknown. Lucky for you, there’s something I’m excited about right now. January is the calm before the new music release storm. Last year, I constructed a release calendar giving a rough gauge of what 2011 would bring. This year I got about double the response. We can look forward to more than 40 Okie releases this year. Awesome. A lot of these releases are subject to change because life happens and recording isn’t always easy, but no matter what it looks as if 2012 is going to be another memorable year. While Wayne Coyne and the Flaming Lips brew up more collaborative projects with artists such as Bon Iver and Ke$ha, Okie musicians have more releases in the works than Spotify would know what to do with. If you don’t see a band that needs to be on this list then let me know and I’ll fix my ears. Shoot an e-mail to livenathan@gmail.com.
JAN. 21 – Punk rock will call VZD’s home because Red City Radio, White Girls and Lost Empires are set to shred all in one night. You might want to show up on time because the last White Girls set I saw lasted a brisk 11 minutes. @VZD’s, 4200 N Western Ave. JAN. 22 - If Weezer and “Wayne’s World” could be wrapped together into a band then you would have Nashville duo Jeff the Brotherhood. The actual brothers create scuzzy, stoner rock at its finest. Things will be turned to 11. Maybe even 11 1/2. @The Opolis, 113 N Crawford Ave. JAN. 26 - Expect an exceptional and free acoustic show from The Pretty Black Chains and newly landed Okie band Mont Lyons. @Pachinko Parlor, 1 NW 9th St. JAN. 27 - Allow me to catch you up just in case you haven’t heard Other Lives and Radiohead used in the same sentence. Stillwater’s Other Lives are opening for Radiohead in a string of shows stretching from Kansas City to Mexico City. This is beyond huge. Here’s your chance to wish the Okie quartet farewell before the band jumps into a fame rocket and exits the stratosphere forever. See you there and arrive early. Seriously. @The Blue Note, 2408 N Robinson Ave.

‘ECHOES OF SILENCE’ – THE WEEKEND
he Weeknd’s “Echoes of Silence” is the last of three mixtapes by Toronto R&B singer-songwriter Abel Tesfaye that began in early 2011 with “House of Balloons” and followed a few months later with “Thursday,” and it brings its central character’s debauchery to its logical ending. As with its predecessors, “Echoes of Silence” derives power from a soulful beauty that seduces while Tesfaye’s lyrics prove absolutely terrifying. What began with bad drugs and questionable coupling is turning more sinister: As Tesfaye sings in “Outside,” “Make yourself at home, because baby when I’m finished with you, you won’t want to go outside.” Ingeniously, the horror of Tesfaye’s “Echoes of Silence” chapter begins with “D.D.,” a surprisingly faith-

ful cover of Michael Jackson’s stalkergroupie power ballad “Dirty Diana.” The Weeknd’s version highlights Tesfaye’s uncanny vocal resemblance to Jackson to great effect, because everything that follows, from “Montreal” to the pleading title track, feels like a Stieg Larsson version of the Jacko story, in which the predatory Dirty Diana should have quickly run away. The 21-year-old Tesfaye, who recently turned in several excellent guest vocals on Drake’s “Take Care,” might be dealing in unsavory territory, but the trilogy is too dark to be accused of romanticizing violence — in the end, Tesfaye’s character is ruined and rotten — and simply works as musically impeccable crime fiction, equal parts Kanye West’s “Monster” video and James Ellroy. The mixtapes will be combined into a box set later this year, but the

exas country standout Cory Morrow may be barefoot, but he gives a bootstomping performance in the latest installment of the “Live at Billy Bob’s Texas” CD/ DVD series. Known for his high-energy but shoeless singing and strumming, Morrow becomes the 40th performer to do a live album at the Fort Worth honkytonk. Recorded last June, the Austin-based singer-songwriter opens his 30th concert at Billy Bob’s Texas with his hit troubadour’s ode “Ramblin’ Man” and revisits life on the road later in the show with the soulful “21 Days.” With “All Said and Done,” he pays tribute to great old country songs including “Whiskey River,” “Big Balls in Cowtown” and “I’ve Been Everywhere,” channels The Isley Broth-
ers’ “Shout” and even scats through a bit of Cab Calloway’s “Minnie the Moocher.” The entertainingly ornery “Good Intentions,” which Morrow wrote with Ray Wylie Hubbard, Radney Foster and Patrick Davis, uses a playful melody and vivid lyrics to tell the story of a scoundrel who freely declares “the road to hell knows me well.” Morrow gives his best vocal performance on the passionate ballad “Spinning Around the Moon (Fly).” On the DVD, Morrow reveals that the March 2011 birth of his son prompted him to record contemporary Christian singer-songwriter Matt Maher’s love song “Hold Us Together.” The fervent cover is Morrow’s latest single. The set closes with a rollicking countrified version of Pete Townshend’s hit “Let My Love Open the
Door” and a rowdy rendition of Reel Big Fish’s “Beer” that has Morrow crawling across the stage, rolling on the floor and assisting on cymbals. Morrow sends his fans home with

‘PROVINCIAL’ – JOHN K. SAMSON
he first solo album by The Weakerthans’ lead singer and songwriter John K. Samson leads the listener on a guided tour of the artist’s old Manitoba haunts, and the many moods and musical styles his memories evoke, and the introspective journey is well worth taking. “Provincial” begins with “Highway 1 East,” which plays out like a brassaccompanied funeral march as he sings of running low on gas, money and love on a lonely road, before seguing into the folky acoustic dirge “Heart of the Continent,” which continues to follow a developing theme of hopelessness and regret before abruptly turning upbeat and happily nostalgic on the lo-fi electric rocker “Cruise Night” (“I know it’s

annoying, borrowing your brother’s car, but mine won’t start, and it’s Sunday.”) And so it goes, ranging from sad and quiet (the mournful, cellolaced “Grace General,” the sobering childhood recollection that is “The Last And,” the rustic ballad longing of “Letter in Icelandic From the Ninette San”) to loud and bright (the garage-rocking, punkpositive “When I Write My Master’s Thesis,” the jangle-poppy “Longitudinal Centre,” and the rousingly anthemic “Highway 1 West”). There are hymns of bleak beauty comparable to those of Bruce Springsteen’s “Nebraska” and alt-pop-rockers full of sunny refrains, but there’s never a dull moment, musically or lyrically, on Samson’s bumpy road trip through his past.

‘TINKER, TAILOR, SOLDIER, SPY’

or all the popularity and meticulous accuracy of his Cold War-era spy novels, John Le Carre’s work rarely adapted well in its time — only 1965’s “The Spy Who Came in From the Cold” did true justice to Le Carre’s expert sense of tension and mood among the players in high-level surveillance. Tomas Alfredson’s landmark version of “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” provides the long-needed corrective measure: Operating masterfully from the distance of nearly four decades, Alfredson gets to the heart of a time when the cloaks were on and the daggers were out. Absolutely spot on as Le Carre’s most famous creation, Gary Oldman plays George Smiley, the former secondin-command at British Intelligence (“The Circus”) who was fired in 1973 after a serious security compromise. Oldman’s boss, Control (John Hurt), sent agent Jim Prideaux (Mark Strong) to Hungary to investigate the presence of a “mole” inside The Circus, an allegation based on intelligence from British agent Ricki Tarr (Tom Hardy), but Prideaux was shot and tensions rose: Tarr was painted as a turncoat, and both Control and Smiley were ousted. And yet, there is still ample evidence of sensitive information being systematically ushered to a Soviet diplomat in London in exchange for supposedly top-shelf intelligence code-named “Witchcraft.” With Control now dead after a long illness, civil serviceman Oliver Lacon (Simon McBurney) calls Smiley out of retirement to investigate the men Control suspected: <<<

new MI6 head Percy Alleline (Toby Jones), his lieutenant Bill Haydon (Colin Firth), next-in-command Roy Bland (Ciaran Hinds), Hungarian-born agent Toby Esterhase (David Dencik), and Smiley himself. Each is given a code name: Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Poor Man and Spy. All those parenthetical names provide ample evidence that “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is no flyweight Le Carre adaptation — all these titans of British cinema could just show up and the film would be eminently watchable. Instead, “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” is beautifully executed on all fronts. Alfredson, the Swedish director of 2008’s superb thriller “Let the Right One In,” recreates the early 1970s spy era with the same detailed eye David Fincher brought to that era’s newsrooms in “Zodiac.” It’s not just the phones and typewriters. In several key scenes inside MI6 offices, Alfredson shoots from inside an electric dumb waiter, not just symbolizing the levels of British Intelligence but also illustrating the ways in which information moved four decades ago. As he did with the 1980s-set “Let the Right One In,” Alfredson sets his time period not through obvious pop-cultural iconography but with seemingly mundane objects, and he gets it right throughout. Not that there was ever a doubt, but Oldman is simply one of the best actors of his generation, and he proves it during a great soliloquy in which Smiley tells his assistant in the investigation, Peter Guillam (Benedict Cumberbatch of “War Horse”), about his attempt to bring Soviet master spy Karla over to their side. Karla is clearly Smiley’s greatest personal and professional failure, and
LOOKATOKC.COM
the anguish on Oldman’s face as he recounts how things went bad is astonishing. Most of Oldman’s performance in “Tinker” is quiet, slow-boiling and thoughtful — some of Smiley’s greatest behavioral assets — but this moment, when the old spy lets his guard down, stands tall above all others. Beyond Oldman, everyone is on the mark, but some of the great performances come farther down the cast list, especially Hardy as Tarr, a “scalp-hunter” whose doomed entanglement with a Soviet operative (Svetlana Khodchenkova) left him emotionally wrecked and ruined his career with The Circus; and Strong as Prideaux, whose misadventure in Hungary might not have killed him, but definitely left him as a ghost. Casting director Jina Jay, who also brought Oldman in as Sirius Black for “Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban,” assembled the perfect acting ensemble for “Tinker.” Outside of “From the Cold,” the best Le Carre adaptations came after Cold War hostilities ended: 2001’s “The Tailor of Panama,” “The Constant Gardener” and now “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy.” Perhaps filmmakers needed the distance from “mutually assured destruction” to truly get at how these spies thought, felt and operated. As a former British Intelligence officer, Le Carre knew his material better than most spy novelists, and “Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy” seems to know everything he knew. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

‘CARNAGE’
Rating: R (Language) Running time: 1 hour, 19 minutes Starring: Jodie Foster, Kate Winslet, John C. Reilly, Christoph Waltz.

Polanski’s ‘Carnage’ barely leaves a mark
M
ost viewers who admired and endured Edward Albee’s “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” will see Roman Polanski’s “Carnage” as a compact retread of Albee’s play and Mike Nichols’ film. But “Carnage” quickly devolves into calculated conflict during its short running time, and by the end of this shrill exercise in uncivil discourse, even the performances by normally fine actors go wildly off the rails. “Carnage” opens with a distant view of two 9-year-old boys fighting at Brooklyn Bridge Park, and then cuts to the home of Michael and Penelope Longstreet (John C. Reilly and Jodie Foster), a seemingly agreeable, civilized and cultured couple putting together a joint legal statement on what transpired between the boys with the other child’s parents, Alan and Nancy Cowan (Christoph Waltz and Kate Winslet). In the early running, all parties are presenting their best selves, but it is also clear that these couples should wrap up their unpleasant business and part ways: They do not belong in the same room together. Unfortunately for all parties, Penelope makes the
friendly gesture of inviting the couple to stay for some cobbler. Alan, a high-powered lawyer for a pharmaceutical company, is constantly on his BlackBerry, dealing with a media meltdown over a drug that appears to be a neurotoxin, and the prickly Nancy becomes increasingly irritated as Penelope and Michael become incrementally more honest in their assessment of the fight. But the Longstreets, whose son lost a tooth in the incident, are hardly without fault: Penelope’s idealism contains a virulent streak of self-righteousness, and Michael’s affable exterior masks the soul and ethics of a caveman. As “Carnage” descends into a miasma of cutting remarks, property destruction, vomiting and drunkenness, the story becomes an increasingly obvious statement on the fragility of polite society but is revelatory of nothing. Based on Yasmina Reza’s play “God of Carnage,” the film is rendered with the insularity of a stage play, with all the limited action taking place in the Longstreets’ Brooklyn apartment. The Cowans attempt to leave at least three times, and yet are enticed to stay by inconsequential niceties and the proffering of food, coffee and booze, meaning that under any normal circumstances,
“Carnage” should be a shorter film than its 79 overlong minutes. At least that would save viewers from the final 15 minutes, in which Foster, an Oscar winner and a lifelong vessel for great acting, delivers one of the worst performances of her career. As Penelope becomes more drunk and indignant, Foster’s character develops a cartoonishly pugnacious stance, like a knockoff of a James Cagney gangster in a 1940s B-movie. Part of it is the material, which clearly is attempting a cross between comedy of manners and lacerating social commentary, but Foster does not look for a moment like she believes in anything she is saying or doing in this scene. The other three principals do not fare much better, descending into histrionics with hardly any provocation. For suffocating brutality between adults, seek out Nichols’ “Woolf” or his more recent exploration of this emotional territory, 2004’s “Closer.” Despite its similarity to both of those films, “Carnage” barely leaves a mark when it clearly wants to cut deeply.

Streep, script are strong in ‘The Iron Lady’
F
rom the moment her name and the subject of her next film were announced, you knew Meryl Streep’s performance as/ impersonation of Margaret Thatcher had Oscar written all over it. And true to form, the Academy might as well emboss her name on the statuette now. It’s an uncanny turn by the screen’s greatest actress, an acting job with towering bombast and marvelous subtlety. She nailed the look, the tone, the speech patterns, the little snap of the head of the imperious British prime minister. Bloody brilliant. What’s stunning about “The Iron Lady” is what a good film surrounds her performance. Phyllida Lloyd, Streep’s “Mamma Mia!” director, cast this to perfection, putting Streep toe to toe with the A-list of British character players, from Jim Broadbent (as Thatcher’s husband, Denis) to Richard E. Grant, Roger Allam and Anthony Head as her political confidantes. Lloyd finesses a deft script of brisk, quick strokes by Abi Morgan (“Brick Lane,” “Shame”) into a terrific entertainment, and a film that celebrates and to a far lesser degree criticizes a woman who inspired a generation of conservatives, at home and in America, to refuse to compromise, to turn every debate into a battle over “principles.” <<<

Morgan’s framing device follows the elderly Lady Margaret, long-retired, losing her sanity in tiny increments. She still chats with and fusses over her long-dead husband, still manages to slip out to the local grocer’s — unrecognized. And at times, she thinks she’s still prime minister. Streep’s mastery of little-old-ladydom is perfect in most every detail, and she maintains it from first scene, vaguely displeased at a rude businessman who cuts in line in front of her at the convenience mart, to the moment when she, vaguely lost, dodders out of the frame before the closing credits. It’s hard to imagine anyone but the great Broadbent as Denis — something of a goof, a charmer who can do a deft Chaplin walk and keep his complaining to a minimum, even as their entire family’s lives are upended by Margaret’s political ambitions. Alexandra Roach is the younger Margaret, a grocer’s daughter who absorbed Dad’s Tory politics during the London Blitz, who learned the hard way how to crack into the boy’s club that was British politics of the 1950s. “One’s life must matter,” the young Margaret tells her future husband (Harry Lloyd is the young Denis). “I will not be one of those women,” she fumes, laying out ground rules before she’ll accept his proposal. No quiet, shy retiring wife for him. She means to change Britain.
LOOKATOKC.COM
Morgan’s quick-stroke telling of the story amounts to Maggie’s Greatest Hits — her first political victory, her standing up to the establishment in her own party, her party’s victory in 1979, and the riots, IRA bombings and hard times that greeted it. We see Thatcher at war over the Falklands, and bathing in the glory of the end of the Cold War. And we get an earful of her byyour-own-bootstraps economic policy, crushing unions, shuttering British industries and becoming the most hated prime minister ever before the little war gave her and her people a boost in prestige and confidence that turned her political tide. Streep says a phrase that Thatcher shared with Ronald Reagan, “There you go again,” as if she owns it, and conveys the tactless bullying that characterized her rule, decrying “weak, weak, weak men” who show their political cowardice at every turn, upbraiding friend and foe alike. But the film is far more of a celebration than an evenhanded accounting, not dwelling on her failings and her failure. And showing her as a very old woman tends to sentimentalize someone who didn’t allow room for that emotion. — Roger Moore, MCT Information Services

ollywood is a big circus, and as the film industry has proved every year since “Jaws” took a bite out of the box office in 1975, it cannot put on a circus without “tentpoles.” That is, of course, the business term for movies that hold everything up, and after a year in which every one of the top 10 films was a sequel, remake or adaptation, prepare for more unsubtle familiarity keeping the tent over everyone’s head. But are there new trends? Just follow the breadcrumbs, boys and girls, to a plethora of princesses, dwarves, giants and witches, all imbued with the kind of darkness that could only happen after “Twilight.” Yes, fairy tales such as “Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters” (March 2), “Mirror, Mirror” (March 16),“Snow White and the Huntsman” (June 1) and “Jack the Giant Killer” (June 15) are the gold rush du jour, and only time and box office receipts will tell whether audiences decided to bite into these apples or if they just stayed home and watched “Once Upon a Time” or “Grimm.” But if fairy tales do not make the studios live happily ever after, the slate of big movies for 2012 proves there is more than one way to spin a web, go to space, deal with vampires or survive the apocalypse. This is not a complete list, but these are the films that spark our childlike wonder. They give us hope that there is still some magic under the big top. >>>> SEE LIST OF MOVIES ON PAGE 20, 21

“DR. SEUSS’ THE LORAX” Given the beloved source material, it’s amazing how barely lovable to downright intolerable most of the Dr. Seuss bigscreen adaptations turned out to be — the Mike Myers version of “The Cat in the Hat” should have been euthanized. “Despicable Me” director Chris Renaud is on board for this version of Seuss’ environmental fable, withDanny DeVito voicing the Lorax, but time will tell whether the love story and the other noncanonical subplots will make sense to anyone who grew up loving Truffula Trees and Bar-ba-loots in their Bar-ba-loot suits. (March 2)
“JOHN CARTER” Oscar-winning Pixar helmer Andrew Stanton (“Finding Nemo,” “WALL-E”) makes the jump to live-action filmmaking to adapt Edgar Rice Burroughs’ classic novel about a war-weary soldier (Taylor Kitsch) who is mysteriously transported to Mars (aka Barsoom), where he becomes entangled in an epic conflict among the planet’s denizens. Hopefully, Stanton will have as much success working in live-action as his Pixar counterpart Brad Bird did with last year’s spy spectacle “Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol.” (March 9)
“THE HUNGER GAMES” May the odds be ever in the favor of Oscar-nominated it girl Jennifer Lawrence(“Winter’s Bone,” “X-Men: First Class”), who will fight to the death in the film version of Suzanne Collins’ best-selling novel, the first of a trilogy that has sold 16 million copies in the U.S. alone. In the not-too-distant future, North American society has collapsed and been replaced by Panem, in which every year two teenagers from each of the country’s 12 districts are summoned to the corrupt Capitol to participate in the deadly “Hunger Games,” a spectacle televised throughout the land. (March 23)
“THE AVENGERS”
the place in ruins and occupied by dysfunctional descendants. It also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Grace Moretz, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley. (May 11)
“MEN IN BLACK III” A decade after the last installment, the Men in Black are back. The movie series, based on the comic book written by Lowell Cunningham and illustrated by Sandy Carruthers, stars Will Smith as Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K. The agents are members of a secret task force that monitors alien activity on Earth. In “MIB III,” Agent J must travel back in time to the 1960s to prevent Agent K (played in the 1960s era of the film by Josh Brolin) from being assassinated. “Men in Black III” also starsAlice Eve, Emma Thompson and Johnny Knoxville. (May 25)
“PROMETHEUS” This might be an act of misdirection, but Ridley Scott now indicates that “Prometheus” is not a prequel to the “Alien” films but contains some of the same elements as that landmark series. Little is known beyond the basic premise involving a late-21st-century space exploration delving into the origins of the human species. The film stars Charlize Theron, Michael Fassbender, Noomi Rapace, Guy Pearce, Idris Elbaand probably not Sigourney Weaver, but everyone will know for sure June 8.
“BRAVE” Pixar’s animation wizards look back to ancient times for their first fairy tale, the story of courageous and impetuous Scottish princess Merida (voice of Kelly Macdonald), a skilled archer who defies a venerable custom and inadvertently causes chaos in the kingdom of her parents, King Fergus (Billy Connolly) and Queen Elinor (Emma Thompson). Craig Ferguson, Robbie Coltrane and Kevin McKidd also lend their brogues to the Highland adventure. (June 22)
Marvel’s heroes will gather en masse to battle threats no one of them can handle alone in this expected blockbuster to be directed by Joss Whedon (“Serenity”). The film will bring together actors from the casts of “Iron Man” (Robert Downey Jr.), “Iron Man 2” (Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson), “Thor” (Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner) and “Captain America: The First Avenger” (Chris Evans), adding in Mark Ruffalo as the new Hulk for good measure. (May 4)
Benjamin Walker stars as the 16th president of the United States in this film from “Wanted” director Timur Bekmambetov. But this is a version that you didn’t read about in history class. Has there ever been a more appropriately named director than Marc Webb? The “(500) Days of Summer” director takes over for Sam Raimi as the Spider-films are rebooted, with Andrew Garfield (“The Social Network”) signing on as timid teen Peter Parker, who becomes the Amazing Spider-
Man following an encounter with an unusual spider. Webb told the Los Angeles Times that Peter’s outsider status remains, though the idea of what it means to be a geek has changed since the Raimi films. “Nerds are running the world. Andrew Garfield made a movie about it. Nerds are no longer pariahs, and knowing how to write computer code is longer a (mocked) quality. What was important in those early comics was this notion that Peter Parker is an outsider and how we define that in a contemporary context.” (July 3)
“JACK THE GIANT KILLER” Bryan Singer (“X-Men”) creates a “Jack and the Beanstalk” update starring Nicolas Hoult (“X-Men: First Class”) as Jack, a young farmer who accidentally opens a gateway — by means of apparently, a beanstalk — to the giants’ kingdom. This restarts a dormant war between humanity and the giants, and leaves Jack to rescue a princess from the giants. (July 15)
“THE DARK KNIGHT RISES” The big finale to Christopher Nolan’s Bat-trilogy brings in Tom Hardy as bad guy Bane and Anne Hathaway as the sexy Selina Kyle, aka Catwoman. Christian Bale returns asBruce Wayne/ Batman for the final time. The movie takes place eight years after the events of “The Dark Knight.” (July 20)
“THE BOURNE LEGACY” Matt Damon has finished his stint as Jason Bourne, the superspy with the foggy memory, but two-time Academy Award nominee Jeremy Renner (“The Hurt Locker,” “The Town”) will be introduced as a new CIA operative traversing the murky universe based on Robert Ludlum’s novels in the action-packed franchise’s fourth film. After penning the three previous “Bourne” movies, two-time Oscar nominee Tony Gilroyagain takes up the pen but also takes the director’s chair for “Legacy.” (Aug. 3)
“SKYFALL” On the 23rd go-round, James Bond (Daniel Craig) faces a test of his loyalty to M (Judi Dench) during an attack on MI6, but “Skyfall,” directed by Sam Mendes, should only extend audiences’ loyalty to the 007 franchise, featuring supporting performances byRalph Fiennes, Naomie Harris and Javier Bardem. (Nov. 9)
“THE TWILIGHT SAGA: BREAKING DAWN, PART 2” The final chapter of Stephenie Meyer’s paranormally popular story comes to its dramatic conclusion with a potential vampire war brewing and Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) acclimating to her new life as a wife, mother and supernatural being. Heartthrobs Robert Pattinson and Taylor Lautner and the rest of the “Twilight” regulars will be back for the fifth and final installment, which will introduce an array of additional bloodsuckers. (Nov. 16)
“THE HOBBIT: AN UNEXPECTED JOURNEY” Director Peter Jackson’s last journey to Middle Earth yielded “The Lord of the Rings,” a trilogy that earned the praise of fans and critics alike, won 17 Oscars and became one of the highest-grossing film series ever. So expectations are higher than the Lonely Mountain for Jackson’s two-part film version of J.R.R. Tolkien’s prequel novel, “The Hobbit.” The first installment will introduce unassuming Hobbit Bilbo Baggins(Martin Freeman), who undertakes an epic quest to reclaim the lost Dwarf Kingdom of Erebor from the wicked dragon Smaug. (Dec. 14)
“THIS IS 40” Not so much a sequel but a spinoff of 2007’s “Knocked Up,” director Judd Apatow’s next film features Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann reprising their roles as Pete and Debbie, now facing down midlife five years after Debbie suspected music business scout Pete of having an affair when he was just secretly involved in a fantasy baseball draft. Returning players include Jason Segel and Charlyne Yi. (Dec. 21)
“LINCOLN” This one does not hunt vampires, but given its pedigree (directed by Steven Spielberg, based on a biography by Doris Kearns Goodwin), “Lincoln” does not need supernatural goofiness to resonate. Daniel Day-Lewis stars as Abraham Lincoln, withSally Field playing Mary Todd Lincoln, and Jared Harris portraying Ulysses S. Grant. Early press photos indicate that Day-Lewis was born to play Lincoln, but then again, he was born to play most people and things. (December)
“KING OF THE ELVES” Not much is known about Disney’s animated adaptation of Phillip K. Dick’s only short story in the fantasy realm, but just the notion intrigues. It’s said the movie will center on a regular guy living in the Mississippi Delta who reluctantly helps a desperate band of elves, prompting them to name him their new king. (December) LOOKATOKC.COM

ewis Black is mining renewable resources for his anger energy and generating an endless supply of twisted-up comic rage. And he owes at least some of his ferocious success as a standup comedian and commentator on “The Daily Show with Jon Stewart” to a tragic vomiting incident. In a previous life, Black was a Yale-trained playwright who spent years staging plays at the West Bank Cafe Downstairs Theatre Bar, an 80-seat dinner theater in midtown Manhattan where Bruce Willis tended bar before he started “Moonlighting.” Black, who performs Jan. 26 at the Rose State College Performing Arts Theatre, often warmed up the audience with his standup routines, but in the 1980s, his dark heart was devoted to a theatrical career. So when Houston’s Alley Theatre invited Black and co-writer Rusty Magee to premiere their musical, “The Czar of Rock and Roll” at the venue, Black thought he was on the verge of a breakthrough. Instead, Black experienced one of the most explosive early disasters in his career. Black and Magee invited theater critics from the major Houston newspapers and gave away several tickets to fill the seats. Everything was looking up for Black’s play about an American singer who moves to the Soviet Union to become an Elvis-style phenomenon, but then one of the recipients of a free ticket suddenly became ill — spectacularly, theatrically ill. To make matters worse, she was sitting just behind the theater critics for the Houston Post and Houston Chronicle. In short order, “The Czar of Rock and Roll” was fragrantly dethroned, and Black was forced to take stock. “It was like a bad version of a Greek tragedy,” Black said during a recent phone interview. “We bring her in so she can throw up on the critics. It was too perfect. There was a part of me that said, ‘Well, we’re (expletive deleted),’ and there was another part of me that couldn’t stop laughing.” That night, Black needed a palate cleanser, an indication that something could go right. A Houston comedy club called Spellbinders was just what he needed. >>>> SEE REST OF STORY ON PAGE 25

“I went across town that night and auditioned to do stand-up at a club. I do 20 minutes onstage and I kill. That club goes, ‘OK, we’ll take you,’” Black said. “To able to go into a place, audition in front of them, have them see it, have them hire me and have them pay me what I was making on the play... The play took four years. I was going to make in a week what I was going to get for four years of work,” he said. “I was going to get a nicer car and a better place to say, and I said, ‘Well, there’s something (expletive deleted) wrong with this picture.’ I was 40 at the time, and I said, ‘I can’t live like this anymore.’ “People were paying attention to my comedy in a way that they weren’t paying attention to my writing,” Black said. “If you look at my history as a playwright, I’d really done everything you could possibly do to kind of put myself in a position to be seen as an interesting young writer. It wasn’t happening.” Black, whose father studied mechanical engineering at the University of Oklahoma before moving to Silver Spring, Md., found his footing quickly. Dan Ballard, a fellow comedian who frequently worked with Black’s regular opening act, John Bowman, told Black that he needed to tap into his most primal impulse. “He said, ‘You know, you’re really angry and I don’t know why you aren’t yelling on stage. I want you to go back onstage and just yell. And I did, and that was it,” he said. “The blind spot of most comics is that most comics are really funny when they’re sitting around with a group of people, because they instinctively let that part of their personality come out that is the funny part, and the funny part of me was when I was angry. I missed the point for a long time.” If “The Prophet” is any indication, Black learned more quickly than he admits. Released by Comedy Central Records in September 2011, “The Prophet” is a rough, low-fidelity recording of a 1990 performance in which Black holds forth on former Vice President Dan Quayle, the Exxon Valdez and Manuel Noriega. Throughout this early performance, Black sounds much like the man who would debut on “The Daily Show” six years later, then go on to perform in multiple “Comedy Central Presents”
episodes and HBO standup specials, but still clearly working on his now-mastered sense of how to gradually bring the audience along to a climactic explosion of anger. The key, Black said, is to let the audience know that he’s on their side: he’s not yelling at them, he’s yelling with them. “You’ve got to build to it. There’s a lot to be gained by nuance, if anybody knows what that word means anymore,” he said. “You could lose 500 readers with that word.” Another thing Black is building — on a constant basis — is his routine. With the presidential primaries in full swing, Black scans newspapers, magazines and television news every morning and every night to keep track of the current events. Much like Louis C.K., Black tries to reshape his routine every year. “This year was a tougher one for me. If I’m on my game, it’s every nine months; if I’m off my game, it’s every year and some change. My hard part is that there’s always something in the old act that takes me (expletive deleted) forever to give up. I like saying certain words so much. It’s disgusting!” While his work as a playwright is largely behind him, his most promising plays recently received revivals, including an acclaimed 2011 performance of 1982’s “One Slight Hitch” starring Justin Long and Mark Linn-Baker at Massachusetts’ Williamstown Theater Festival. And in 2010, Black decided to mount a staged reading of “The Czar of Rock and Roll” to see if it would work two decades after the end of the Cold War. This time, no one vomited, but Black said it takes forever to get anything done in the theater. This slow movement is just more evidence that Black made the right decision when he left the Alley Theatre that night in 1990 and took the stage at Spellbinders. “It gave me the satisfaction that there was me and the audience and there was nothing between me and the audience,” Black said. “I was treated better by alcoholics in clubs than I ever was by the theatrical community. I still look at the theatrical community as if I ended up in an abusive orphanage by accident.”

ack in 1992, urban renewal was just lapping up to the shores of Bricktown. Other than the Spaghetti Warehouse, the area had little to offer. In September of that year, Bricktown Brewery, 1 N Oklahoma, set up stakes, and the fledgling entertainment district had life. The city’s first brewpub was a pioneer not only for Bricktown but for brewpubs that followed as it spearheaded a campaign to legalize the concept. But time isn’t always kind to pioneers. The R.T. McLain family opened Bricktown Brewery in 1992, then original manager Jim Cowan bought it. Cowan sold to Emerging Brands of Edmond in 2007. Last spring, Emerging Brands sold its interests in Bricktown Brewery, three Old Chicago Restaurants, Bellini’s and Coach’s to Enduring Brands. Enduring has some common partners with Emerging; they are Jim Burke, Brad Grow and Kim McClendon. Enduring Brands immediately went on a campaign to revitalize the new properties and sold Bellini’s about two months ago. Buck Warfield, president of Enduring Brands, has overseen the reinvention of Bricktown Brewery. Warfield is a stonecold restaurant executive. He has invested in a complete makeover of the historic Bricktown space built in the 1920s. But exteriors and interiors weren’t the only thing due a second look.

U P DAT I N G T H E B R E W S Gone are the beers the pub was founded on: Land Run Lager, Bison Weizen, Red Brick Ale, Copperhead Amber Ale and Santa Fe Rail Ale. They are replaced by Old King Kolsch, Wiley One-Eyed Wheat, 46 Star Oklahoma Amber Ale, Remington Red and Bricktown Brown. Seasonal brews are also on the roster. Further, Bricktown Brewery now offers other local beer, including Choc and COOP, plus other premium microbrews from around the world. While the beers have been rethought, Warfield said Oklahoma’s regulations on microbrews limit what can be done. “With some changes to the law, we can go from producing really good beer to truly great beer,” Warfield said. State law doesn’t allow brewpubs to produce and serve beer that exceeds 3.2-percent alcohol content. This limitation links back to Oklahoma law’s insistence that 3.2 beer isn’t an intoxicant. ABOUT THE FOOD
Elvis Fries
As for the food, Warfield mentioned beer, bacon, bourbon and chocolates as his four major food groups. “We haven’t figured out how to get chocolate in there all the way, but we’re working on it.” The other ingredients are well-represented. The menu brims with Southern, Southwestern and all-American influences. Warfield said he’s always leaned toward Southern food, and the menu reflects it with items such as pimento cheese, skillet cornbread, catfish and fried chicken tenders. The burgers are as we demand them: big on beef and bold ingredients on buns baked in Norman at the La Baguette Bakery. Appetizers are large enough that they should arrive by forklift. The chili is of the Cincinnati persuasion, meaning it’s tinged with cinnamon and allspice. The All-Oklahoma Corn Dog consists of Schwab’s hot
link, Shawnee Mills breading and Griffi n’s jalapeno mustard. My personal favorite is the Fat Elvis Fries, a heap of sweet potato fries drizzled in peanut butter sauce, mixed with chopped bacon and sprinkled with dried banana chips. Another favorite was the Chopped and Chipped Nachos that include pulled pork with Head Country barbecue sauce, cheese, charred onions, smoked jalapeno and Cholula cream.

The countdown is on to the 12th annual Oklahoma City Memorial Marathon, and many people’s New Year’s resolutions include either running a marathon or just running for exercise. Whether you’re an experienced runner hoping to win the April 29 marathon, or a newbie just hoping to complete the 5K, you should be training now, experts say, if you haven’t been training year round. Probably the most important part of your running wardrobe is your shoes, because a good pair can help you avoid painful and costly injuries.
PERFORMANCE
“Some people can put on anything and run or walk or whatever they’re going to do for exercise,” said Brent Gaddis, owner of The Runner, 9644 N May Ave., one of the few locally owned shops in the city that caters specifically to runners. “But if you’re having problems with your feet, heels, knees or shins, then you have to get the proper shoes. That way, the injuries won’t be as bad, and you’ll be able to exer-

cise more without any pain.” Stores such as The Runner or Red Coyote in Classen Curve have experts who can analyze your feet. “We fit you for the purpose you’re using them for,” Gaddis said. “All the $140 shoes feel good. But if you’re just walking or running a mile, you don’t need to spend $140 for a pair of shoes.”

Finding the proper shoe for you depends on your arches, any injuries or weaknesses you have in your feet and legs, and the type of exercise you’re planning to do. For example, cross-training shoes are different from running shoes. Cross-trainers are made to provide more lateral support for side-toside motions; they’re good for training for football and other activities with more lateral movements. Running shoes typically have more shock absorption than cross-trainers and are made to provide more vertical support to the foot.
MAKE SURE YOU KNOW WHAT KIND OF FEET YOU HAVE TO DETERMINE THE LEVEL OF STABILITY YOU NEED IN A SHOE.
Further, there are several different types of feet, Gaddis said. People with high arches need a “neutral arch” shoe. If you’re flat-footed, you need a motion-control shoe. And if you have medium arches, a stability control shoe is your best bet.

Burke Beck and her husband, Jon, own Red Coyote, 5800 N Classen Blvd., one of the city’s newest additions to locally owned athletic shoe stores, having opened in April 2010 in Classen Curve.

Red Coyote carries some brands of running shoes not found in many other stores in Oklahoma, such as Brooks, Newton and Zoot. Zoot is a seamless shoe geared toward triathletes because it is seamless and easy to get on and off quickly.

opBut, Beck said, it’s becoming popular among runners because it can an be worn without socks and the he n’t seamless inside of the shoe won’t rub blisters. Also, she said, the he seamless carbon fiber plate in the he ght sole of the shoe keeps it lightweight but very responsive. It’s also made de with antimicrobial lining to minimize odor.

If you’re shopping for new running shoes, you can make a difference to a child or adult in need by donating your old athletic shoes to “Runners for Africa,” a project spearheaded by a local woman who collects shoes for people in Africa who need them.

If you’re new to running, Red Coyote is offering a class that could help you go from novice to 5k runner. “Newbie Running P rogram” is a 10-week course that started Jan. 10, but you can still join the class, officials at the store said.

THINGS TO CONSIDER There are several things to keep in mind when you’re shopping for running shoes. First, make sure you know what kind of feet you have to determine the level of stability you need in a shoe. At Red Coyote, Beck videos the customer’s feet as they walk or run barefoot on a treadmill. She plays back the video to analyze whether the customer’s feet tend to pronate (weight is on the inside edge of the sole), supinate (weight is on the outside edge of the foot, and the ankle rolls away from center), or if they have medium arches or flat feet. With your type of foot in mind, another important consideration is to find a shoe that fits correctly. Most running shoes are sized smaller than other styles, Beck said.

“So you may wear an 8 or 8 1/2 in a heel, but you may have to go up to a size 10 in a running shoe,” Beck said. “Just remember that size is just a number, and make sure you have enough room, like about a thumb-width at the toe, so you don’t lose any toenails. That’s pretty gross.” stor y cont inues

When beginning any running training routine, Gaddis says to always start slow and work your way up to your goal. Walk for five minutes, then run for two minutes, for example. This lets your body “get used to the pounding.” Compression garments a good way to help support your legs and feet while running or walking. Compression socks or running tights compress the muscles in your legs, helping your muscles warm up, stay warm and can ease muscle fatigue and strain. Whatever shoe you choose, it’s important to stay safe while you run. “We sell pepper spray,” Beck said. Gaddis mentioned a flashlight that doubles as a weapon he has carried in the past. “I would say if you’re running at odd times of the day when there’s nobody around, make sureyou’re running with somebody else. Don’t run by yourself,” Beck said.
START SLOW AND WORK YOUR WAY UP
TO YOUR GOAL
If you’re running after dark, most running wear comes with reflective elements to help keep you visible at night. Saucony makes a cap with a built-in LED light clip.
