2003: of Ben Gibbard and butt-rock
N
ext week marks the 10th anniversary of The Postal Service’s “Give Up.” Chances are good that if you’re reading this column you’ve got no use for me to put “Give Up” into any sort of context, as you probably lived it. For millions of suburban-raised teenagers of the early aughts, Ben Gibbard’s lyrics were some of the first words that were ever carefully considered through late-night, alone-in-bed headphone sessions, burned to CDs to be nervously offered to potential boyfriends or girlfriends, and obsessed over. A few months ago I put “Sleeping In” on my car stereo while riding around with a new friend roughly my age, and it not only prompted immediate recognition, but even a little excitement. It seems that Gibbard’s and Jimmy Tamborello’s precious, squiggly electronica has aged well. I’ve been listening to “Give Up” sporadically since this fall when I saw its anniversary on the calendar and planned to dedicate a column to it, but in finding my angle, I realized the first time I even heard the ubiquitous “Such Great Heights” was a Ben Folds cover of the song that I’d downloaded on MySpace sometime in college, which would’ve been about five years after

Sub Pop released it. (It’s since become the Seattle label’s first gold record since Nirvana’s “Bleached.”) Somewhere along the line I’d apparently fictionalized an account of having heard “Give Up” before that, probably to impress a girl at a party. (We’ve all been there — admit it.) But in so doing I’d buried the real history of what I spent 2003 listening to, and when I used the “2003 in music” Wikipedia entry to uncover it a few weeks ago, I got overwhelmed with profound shame. You see, the reason I hadn’t heard “Give Up” at this point was because I was too busy listening exclusively to alternative-rock and classic-rock radio formats, which meant that I had a robust appreciation
for bands that made music that was about as sophisticated as that of Jet. Scrolling through that Wikipedia page was like walking through a hall of mirrors at an especially freaky circus. I saw myself in the reflections, but it was an awkward, far-fromfully-formed version of myself who carried around a minidisc player full of Hoobastank. With each band name I recognized, it was sort of like my friend in the earlier anecdote, but instead of excitement, that feeling of recognition came with a festering shame. There was prompted a memory of calling into the local alternative-rock station Z-104.5 The Edge one night to request a song from Metallica’s “St.
Anger” record (it was probably the one that sounds like Lars Ulrich furiously drumming on a set of Lou Reed’s trash can lids), the entire plot and (in 2013, still surprisingly catchy) melody of Puddle of Mudd’s “She Hates Me,” and all the times I’d jumped around in my teenage bedroom, playing air guitar to “I Believe in a Thing Called Love.” So basically, what I’m saying is, I owned all three Creed albums available to the public at that time and loved the song “Smooth Criminal” despite being almost completely oblivious to Michael Jackson. To top it all off — and thereby render complete my cultural hopelessness — I definitely purchased the “Music from and Inspired by Spider-Man” soundtrack from the 2002 Spider-man reboot, specifically because I’d been moved by “Hero,” the collaboration between Nickelback’s Chad Kroeger and Saliva’s Josey Scott. I was quite literally at the bottom of what would now be considered cool or challenging. But the good news about being at the bottom is that you’ve only got one direction to go, and that’s up. I got to college and somebody lent me Radiohead’s entire discography and life improved dramatically. My perspective on the world steadily expanded beyond the alt/classic-rock radio format, and I eventually stopped having to feign recognition of Ben Gibbard’s voice. I realize this all seems pretty frivolous, but I’ve learned an important lesson here: We change and contexts change, but art doesn’t. (And neither does butt-rock, I should probably specify.) All the pleasure I derived from Incubus’ “Nice to Know You” back then causes me some actual pain now, but it’s probably a good thing to look back every so often, lest you start taking yourself too seriously.

klahoma consistently proves to outsiders that the reality of our state outstrips the perception by a long shot. The Oklahoma City Thunder showed that we were more than just college football, the Flaming Lips revealed that great psychedelic rock could spring from the same Woody Guthrie roots that produced our A-list country artists, and with the rise of Jabee, Josh Sallee and this issue’s cover subject, Johnny Polygon, Oklahoma is a source for credible, innovative hip-hop, as well. Just last month, Jabee was blowing up in XXL, one of the leading oracles of hip-hop culture. The magazine prominently featured him in an interview and profile in its section for rising talent, The Break, and posted several of Jabee’s videos on its site. I’ve known Jabee for a few years now, and he is a tireless supporter of Oklahoma and its musicians — he’s collaborated on stage with so many people that I started to lose count about a year ago. One of the absolute best local albums of 2012 was Sallee’s “Prob- BY GEORGE LANG able Flaws,” a record filled with LOOKATOKC EDITOR top-shelf beats that supported the GLANG@OPUBCO.COM otherworldly verbal flow of this BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG hip-hop prodigy. Sallee had a huge week last year at SXSW, and his reputation continues to expand. This month, he released a superb, cinematic new video for his track “Not Following.” Similarly, Polygon’s popularity seems ready to explode at any moment, and as Adam Kemp details in his cover story, we’ve been waiting a long time for this Tulsa rapper to follow up on 2010’s “Rebel Without Applause.” With the release of “The Nothing” this month and the growing presence of Polygon’s friends and colleagues on the mic, it is finally time, for Polygon and for Oklahoma’s hip-hop scene to get some deserved time in the spotlight.

pring is upon us, Oklahoma. Freshen up your music selection by visiting these local shows in the next two weeks. There are many more than I was able to mention; however, this list should keep you music lovers busy. » Feb. 15: BRONCHO, Colourmusic, Riot Bear at Kamps 1310 Lounge. Two of my favorite Okla-
homa acts on one stage is almost like a dream come true. Colourmusic has a trademark psychedelic, ultra-loud sound. They recently opened for Blondie and DEVO at last fall’s Zoo Amphitheater show and the group recently signed to Warner Bros., so I suggest seeing them while they are on their way up. BRONCHO, an Oklahoma favorite, is on tour non-stop. I still don’t know why their song “Try Me Out Sometime” isn’t in a Cadillac commercial. Heavy and upbeat, this will be a great show. Guarantee your spot in the crowd by purchasing tickets on ticketstorm. com. Check out one of BRONCHO’s latest music videos here:

mantha Crain? She is perhaps one of the most down-to-earth and talented musicians in our scene. In 2012, Crain gained national media attention from Rolling Stone and other major press outlets while on tour, and she will be performing at an official SXSW showcase. Her modesty follows her on stage, and her music is true ear candy. Her support, Parker Millsap, is just amazing. His home hub is Norman, but he is loved across the state. the biggest hip-hop show of the season. Tulsa native Johnny Polygon will be visiting his home state for one week only. Polygon has worked with great acts such as Kid Cudi, Dead Prez, and Nas, and after being signed to a label in his early years, he announced in 2010 that he was going independent. Oscar-style allure: 10 Red Carpet beauty secrets
I
t’s not the shiny gold statue that will be garnering all of the attention at the Academy Awards — it’s the fashion statement that’s made by those will be lucky enough to hold one. Don’t get me wrong. It definitely makes for the best accessory at any red carpet event, but many end up talking more about who wore what and who looked best walking through the media circus than who got to hold that prized statue. Buzz names you’ll hear when a reporter asks the inevitable “Who are you wearing?” are designers including Dior, Zac Posen, Versace, Oscar De La Renta, and many more. But it’s about more than the dress — it’s about the look. Shoes, bags, jewelry, hair. Each detail is all-important to the overall flawless appearance. In anticipation of the 8th Academy Awards on Feb. 24, I’ve found beauty secrets the stars use to perfect their looks. Here’s 10 that you can use too. According to Makeup Artist Joanna Schlip (refinery29.com) putting cherry Jell-O on moisturized lips will stain your lips so you won’t have to reapply constantly. She says to just dip your finger in the powder and layer on wet lips. If you want luscious, silky hair condition your hair when it’s dry, author Kym Douglas suggests. It holds in moisture better. You can leave it in for a while or rinse straight away. My favorite beauty tip is to apply nasal spray or Visine to a blemish to take away the acne inflammation. Proactiv founder Dr. Kathy Fields says they work like a steroid. Since eye drops and nasal spray shrink blood vessels, they can get rid of puffiness and under eye circles. According to refinery29, celebrities often take baths after their makeup is applied. This sets the makeup and gives it a dewy look.

She told In Style Magazine the healing ointment keeps her skin looking fresh when she’s doing movies in freezing locations. Gwyneth Paltrow uses Omega 3 oil on her face for a youthful glow. Now that you have your look down, it’s time to rock the fulllength photographs with these tips to looking slim. These are tips I use when hosting on television as well. Turn your body slightly sideways positioning your feet in front of one another.

Keep your arms away from your body so you aren’t squeezing any fat or muscle on your arms in unflattering ways. Of course, good posture is key. Think head over shoulders and shoulders over hips when you’re adjusting yourself. Roll those shoulders back. You’ll also feel more confident about yourself. Also, don’t hold your smile for too long. It will inevitably start looking forced. Wait until the last minute to shine those pearly whites. My favorite slim trick is to try to be slightly lower than the lens. If the photographer can take the photo a bit above you and looking down, you’ll instantly look slimmer. Use these tips at your next charity event or special occasion and be a stand out in the crowd.

he bottle clearly said “drink me.” I accepted the invitation to follow the crew members of the Flaming Lips around for a week prior to their landmark show at the Zoo Amphitheater on Oct 26, 2012. I found myself surrounded by talented, creative people in a world of neon paint, space globes, peacocks, gummy skulls and music. Always the music: the unparalleled, singularly unpredictable music of the Flaming Lips. Frontman Wayne Coyne grew up in Oklahoma City and loves the local fans, and the Lips put their money where their hearts are by hosting the free Halloween Freak Night show, and it was a fond farewell to longtime promotion company Innervisions, which operated the amphitheater in the 1970s and 1980s and then returned to run the facility for the past decade. The first day I spent with the crew members, I was intimidated by the rock star aura, because frankly, these are the biggest rock stars I know. But I was able to observe how the Flaming Lips crew creates their surreal concert experience. I did my best to blend in with the neon paint and multicolored duct tape to get the real scoop on the fascinating people and the imaginative nuts and bolts behind one of the most singular and unique concerts in the music world. The Monday prior to the show, I met with crew member and laser operator Pete Winslow. Winslow has been a close friend of Coyne’s since before the Lips’ formation. “Wayne’s dad owned an office over in one of those older buildings by The Blue Note. It was an old meat locker from the 30’s-40’s,” Winslow said. “After it was all cleaned out, Wayne and some of the guys started using it as a practice space.” Lasers are essential to the look and feel of the show, and the laser used at the Lips show is a converted piece of medical equipment, a LaserScope 800. It is a surgical laser, a gigantic monster of a machine that Winslow and Coyne transformed into a YAG (yttrium aluminum garnet) light laser, which is optically pumped and uses a flash tube. This laser is programmed on Windows 98. “It took us about a year to get the laser to where we could use it in public; however, now we are looking into getting a color one,” Winslow said. Immediately after each show, Winslow calls the FAA to let them know they’re finished. Winslow greeted me outside the Womb Gallery at NW 9 and Broadway in Oklahoma City. He introduced me to members of the crew and walked me to the back of the gallery, where Caleb Lenertz was assembling the back lighting wall. Each light is individually digitally programmed, like a giant high-tech Lite Brite. He said the task took close to 100 hours from start to finish. By the time the screen is programmed, loaded up in a giant moving truck, transported to the Zoo Amphitheater stage and reassembled, I could tell that Lenertz was probably not exaggerating. Lenertz was also the lucky guy who lived in a pop-up tent on stage all week to ensure that nothing was stolen. Fortunately for him, the Oklahoma weather was beautiful that particular week. Later, like the quintessential White Rabbit, always punctual and knowledgeable, Winslow escorted me to Coyne’s home base, located just south of Oklahoma City’s Plaza District in the same neighborhood where Coyne grew up. ing studios, a large converted workroom, Coyne’s residence, a giant disco ball, a space globe of some sort, a couple of dogs and three peacocks. Everywhere you look, someone is working on something — editing video, producing music, making merchandise or creating art. At the compound, I was able to spend some time with Flaming Lips video director and owner of DELO Creative, George Salisbury. Salisbury became involved with the band in 1989. “I showed up at a show one day with this box of Flaming Lips T-shirts that I had made and asked if I could sell them at the show,” Salisbury said. “I told them I’d split the profits, they looked at me weird and let me do it anyway. I did that for a while, and once ‘She Don’t Use Jelly’ broke I couldn’t keep up. A few years later I made a CD bootleg and brought it to one of their shows to sell, just like I did the t-shirts. Once again, they looked at me funny, but that proved to them that I could do the packaging and everything that they needed, so they hired me.”
LOOKATOKC.COM
Salisbury transitioned into video production and developing his own company in 1999 and has since shot videos for Amanda Palmer, Skating Polly, BRONCHO, and numerous projects for The Flaming Lips. “I toured with the band for a few years and stopped around 2003. My place is playing with computers,” said Salisbury. When I met with him, Salisbury was editing video for Friday’s show with Lips drummer Kliph Scurlock by his side. I could tell Salisbury was feeling the pressure, and it was only Monday. “Wayne is going to watch this later. I might have to change some things, and I might not,” Salisbury said. It took Salisbury well over 100 hours to produce the final edit that was shown during the performance. It’s not a typical music video: it plays for the duration of the concert. Tuesday I spent some time with Flaming Lips crew members Jake Harms, Zac Cox, and Phil Bearshield while they created hand-printed posters to be used as band merchandise in a refashioned garage/workroom on the compound. This particular room also served as the location for much of “Christmas on Mars,” a film Coyne directed that featured members of The Flaming Lips as well as some friends and family members. He is quiet, with an acute sense of humor and mountains of quirky personality. Bearshield remained reserved during the process, very zoned in on his work. Coyne taught Harms, Cox and Bearshield an oldschool style of garage screen printing, and they say that
as far as they know, there isn’t another screen press like it. “No one prints like this anymore,” Harms said. “This is real garage screen printing, a labor of love. We do it because we want to. We really don’t have time to do it for anyone else — there’s always something for us to do. Finish one project and move onto the next.” It takes the team about an hour to produce each poster, depending on how many colors are used and the details involved. “The human aspect is what makes it special,” said
Harms. “It’s not like pushing a button; this is a work of art.” Everything they put into these posters is labor intensive. The Flaming Lips posters normally sell for around $100 retail — a bargain considering the time and labor that went into each poster. The weather all week was mild and calm, but as any native Oklahoman will attest, the weather can change at the drop of a giant rubber laser glove. By late ThursSTORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 12

day, a cold front came in and the crew endured a fierce Oklahoma wind that made setting up a dangerous challenge. Crew members were anchoring the giant screens to the bottom of the stage to keep them from hurting someone. This is when the dangers of the job became apparent: The catwalk was swinging from side to side as they waited for the wind to die down to further secure the rigging. Jake Ingalls, member of the Tennessee band Space Face, played a show at the north Oklahoma City bar Hilo Club with Stardeath and the White Dwarfs the day before the show, primarily for preshow hype. Ingalls, whose wavy blonde hair and boyish good looks earned him the nickname “Bieber,” is more of a rock legend in the making than a teen heart throb. Ingalls travelled from Tennessee to do more than play a show at a bar: He and Cox were responsible for setting up confetti and balloons, and also changing out guitars for Steven Drozd during the show. Like so many other roadies on the set, his Lips-centric mind eventually scored him a spot on the crew. “I was a huge nerd, huge fan. I just stuck around and worked, and here I am,” Ingalls said. Ingalls was also involved in making special merchandise for the show: custom guitar picks. “I sent them off to In-Tune to have them made, they were all custom designs,” Ingalls said. “Some of them were Wayne’s designs and some of them were Steven’s, and we worked with Zac (Cox) on the artwork to make them look a lot more colorful. I just love those dudes, they work really hard.” On Friday, the Zoo Amphitheater filled with thousands of Lips fans in full costume, prepared to see the show of their lives. Watching the crew in action during a show is like scanning through a movie in fast forward. Cox and Ingalls were running back and forth assisting the band with whatever they needed, from switching out guitars to filling huge machines with confetti and launching them over the crowd. Shortly after the Lips’ set began, Coyne announced that the gates to the VIP section would be open — it was a freefor-all. People who were sitting atop the hill began running down, many of whom had never experienced the VIP area before and now they were openly invited to come to the front! What a thrill. The Flaming Lips closed out their set with “Do You Realize??” and I stood on the stage with several close friends, sang, and watched the confetti go into the crowd in awe. Cox asked me later, “Was it awesome? Did the crowd love it?” Yes, they did. Next time you’re lucky enough to hear The Flaming Lips perform, give a little nod to the artistic, hard-working people backstage and the hours of sweat and toil they put into each and every detail. It may have felt like a dream world while you were there, a Wonderland, but when you find confetti in your shoes and glitter in your hair days or even weeks later, you’ll know it was more than just a dream. You really did fall down the rabbit hole.

‘HEARTTHROB’ — TEGAN AND SARA
T
hey started as folk singers, but amazing singles such as “Monday, Monday, Monday,” “Walking with a Ghost” and “Alligator” proved that Tegan and Sara Quin could go pop and be proud about it. “Heartthrob” formalizes the twins’ evolution, and with producer Greg Kurstin (The Bird and the Bee, Lily Allen) giving their mini-dramas a hard candy shell, Tegan and Sara are now making music as accessible as Katy Perry’s dance epics but with a higher IQ. Kurstin’s electro-pop production style usually includes callbacks to 1980s New Wave, and while opening single “Closer” has more in common with modern electronic dance music, “Goodbye, Goodbye” and “Drove Me Wild” are as Day-Glo as they come. The sisters even include a love-it-or-hate-it power ballad, “I Was a Fool,” that could pass for listening to mid-’80s Heart, or Roxette’s “Listen to Your Heart,” but infused with enough substance to inoculate listeners against sugar shock. “Heartthrob” is brief but filled with potential singles, all driven by an interlocking narrative about a crush that gives way to disillusionment. Given Sara Quin’s recent work with fellow Canadian Carly Rae Jepsen, it would be nice to see Tegan and Sara rewarded with some mass-market adulation of their own after 14 years as cult act. Any one of these songs could be the one that puts them over. — George Lang, LookatOKC editor

‘LA COSTA PERDIDA’ – CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN
amper Van Beethoven has always been an eclectic and fun-loving bunch, and nine years away from the studio hasn’t dulled their sharp wit and musical wildness. After all, you’d like to think that a band that had its first success with an outrageously titled ditty like “Take the Skinheads Bowling,” and once recorded a song-for-song remake of Fleetwood Mac’s studio epic “Tusk” just for laughs, would never lose its sense of fun and adventure. “La Costa Perdida,” this eccentric left coast outfit’s first full album of new material since 2004’s excellent “New Roman Times,” brings the good news that lead singer/guitarist David Lowery and company still possess the agile ability to turn stylistic cartwheels through rock, punk, folk and world music without ever losing their balance. The members have touted this record
as a celebration of Northern California where Lowery and bassist Victor Krummenacher first got together as students at UC Santa Cruz, rounding out their sound with Jonathan Segel on guitar, mandolin, organ and prominent violin. “Come Down the Coast” is the warm breeze of a rock ballad that paints the first strokes of ocean sunset imagery, before the mood turns trippy with the surf-guitar-driven “Too High for the Love-In,” which finds the singing narrator (Lowery) flashing back to a woozy night of overindulgence in his misspent ‘60s youth. There’s more haunting, psych-blues, noir guitar on the shadowy “You Got to Roll,” while Segel’s violin brings an Eastern-flavored fever-dream tension to the emotionally shadowy “Someday Our Love Will Sell Us Out.” The proceedings abruptly brighten with the double-time, Celtic- and
country-flavored reel called “Peaches in the Summertime,” then turn dreamy with the acoustic-electric ode to “Northern California Girls,” with its sunny lyrical portrait of going “barefoot on the beaches” and teaching the kids “how to surf and play baseball” under deep blue skies. And so it goes from dark to light, as LOOKATOKC.COM

is the way with so many of this schizophrenic assemblage’s works. Most of CBV’s albums are uneven at best, and don’t go down as smoothly as the music of Cracker, which is Lowery’s more mainstream, alt-country-oriented outfit. ‘SET YOU FREE’ – GARY ALLAN
A
mong mainstream country music stars, Gary Allan has always been a bit of a maverick, and his trendbucking ways prove more tuneful and welcome than ever on “Set You Free,” which just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and the cross-genre Billboard 200 Chart. The California native’s musical maturity is even more appreciated than usual amid the glut of Southern rock party anthems permeating the country airwaves these days. The follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2010 effort “Get Off on the Pain” is a sort of emotional concept album, with the singer-songwriter exploring various musical styles as he follows the narrative arc of a man coping with a broken love affair. in order. There’s a kind of dodged-a-bullet vibe to the rollicking opener “Tough Goodbye,” in which he drawls that it tore him up watching the girl try not to cry but quickly adds “I’m not done being free.” Already a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, the darkly pretty single “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” sets a hopeful tone and showcases Allan’s raw vocal style. He moves on to anger with the gritty countryblues boot-stomper “Bones,” and by the middle of the album, it’s clear the pain has set in. The organ opening of “It Ain’t the Whiskey” contrasts with the stark lyrics, as his protagonist interrupts an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting to declare “It’s all these things I can’t forget ... It’s ain’t the whiskey that’s killing me.” Allan puts a bleakly surreal spin on the island country trend with the wallowing “Sand in My Soul,” and he harmonizes beautifully with co-writer I
LOOKATOKC.COM
Rachel Proctor on the heartbreaker “You Without Me,” about seeing his one-time lover with a new man. The old-school country of “Hungover Heart” contrasts intriguingly with the reggae groove of “No Worries,” which effectively sets up the album’s big finish. Acceptance is the theme of the uptempo anthem “Pieces,” as his character
acknowledges the mistakes made and lessons learned along the way. Finally, the lust of the sultry jazz-inflected come-on “Drop” proves to be true love that makes him “Good as New” on the fervent ballad that closes the album, the all-around strongest to date of Allan’s career. — Brandy McDonnell, entertainment writer

He made famous friends along the way, hanging out with megastars like Nas and Kid Cudi, which only added to his status as one of the fast-rising future stars of hip-hop. Never expecting anything to just be handed to him, Polygon said he knew he had clear his own path. “Make your own way in this game or shut up,” he said. “It has to start from within instead of waiting for some label or some tour to come in, swoop in and make your dreams come true. Go get it, go get hyped.” In his Twitter presence (@JohnnyPolygon), he comes across as a carefree spirit interested in a slim variety of things, most of them of the illegal or eyebrow-raising variety. When speaking with the 28-yearold, it’s clear that Polygon has more worries than he lets on. He speaks with brute-force confidence about the places he’s been, but when the subject turns to the future, the rapper speaks thoughtfully and sometimes timidly about what he hopes to see next. Polygon’s big hit from 2010’s “Rebel Without Applause,” “The Riot Song,” broke into MTV’s top 10 and also helped land him in parties and penthouses filled with industry elites. He admits the stardom went to his head; which he said is why his next album, “The Nothing,” is so late in arriving. “This business will mess your s--- up if you slip up in the slightest way,” he said. “It’s kinda like climbing a mountain and then seeing there are a ... ton of mountains after that you still have to climb. The further you climb, the further you realize you have to go.”

After promising fans a new album for nearly two years, Polygon is about to deliver. “The Nothing” will be released Feb. 20 and will be followed by a four-month, 30-state tour. He describes “The Nothing” as a no-nonsense album devoid of gimmicks. “It’s 100 percent about the music: no features or samples or skits, it’s just music,” he said. “This record is a lot more musical and ambient and cerebral in the sense that I feel that I’ve grown as an artist these last few years. The sound definitely reflects the things that I’ve been through and seen.” Polygon said one of the things he’s most looking for-

ward to is hearing the reaction from fans, at the Feb. 21 show at Kamps and beyond. “I’m really excited to just have that conversation with my fans and the world again,” he said. “It’s like extending the relationship because I have no idea what it could mean to them. It could be something that helps them get through a breakup or cancer. Or it could be something that people just get high to. Either way, I did my part.” Polygon said he was ready to release this album because he finally felt at peace with the music he was making. He said that in the early stages of a career, it’s hard to make a name for yourself, so artists often overcompensate and overwhelm their audience with too much material too soon.

“There are artists that will release a song a day for 40 days and it’s just like throwing it out there into the abyss of other mediocre s---,” he said. “I don’t want to put anything out unless I’m really feeling it. There is no need for me to drop stuff just to keep up with the Joneses.” Making it big out of a place like Oklahoma can have its challenges in the hip-hop world. Polygon said it is a hard process, but he found a way to move forward. “Coming from Oklahoma, I didn’t have anyone guiding me anywhere,” he said. “I was just a lost babe in the woods. I just had to find my own way. Which was a blessing, because I feel like it helped me find my own sound and my own voice.”
