utsiders might perceive it as just civic pride and boosterism, but I hear it every year from both participating musicians and fans: the Norman Music Festival feels like our SXSW. The festival, now entering its ﬁfth year, will bring over 120 bands to 19 stages throughout downtown Norman April 26-28, most of them Oklahoma-based, and this concentration of talent always offers incontrovertible evidence that our state is excelling in all musical genres. The initial buzz always centers on headliners: this year, Portugal. The Man takes the slot previously held by The Walkmen, Dirty Projectors, Of Montreal and the Polyphonic Spree, and the Alaska natives’ spacious and melodic songs from their major-label breakthrough, “In the Mountain, In the Cloud,” will sound amazing wafting down Main Street. But the Main Stage is only part of what makes NMF one of my favorite local events. Everything is represented, most of it is local, and our Oklahoma-based talent stands up alongside the imported acts. OKC Comedy is staging a superb stand-up showcase BY GEORGE LANG LOOKATOKC EDITOR featuring Randy and Jason Sklar of the GLANG@OPUBCO.COM Sklarbro Country podcast, but supporting BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ acts on the bill, including Spencer Hicks, STATICBLOG BradChad Porter, Cameron Buchholtz and Dan Skaggs, are unequivocal all-stars of the local scene. The hip-hop showcase, featuring cover story subject Josh Sallee and headlined by Jabee, proves that Oklahoma has solid hip-hop credentials. The headlining performer on the rootsoriented Jack Daniels Stage is Austin’s Alejandro Escovedo, one of the most extraordinarily gifted singer-songwriters of the past four decades, but those who show up to see locals such as The Damn Quails and Camille Harp will see artists who have what it takes to support such a towering act. Our next issue is devoted entirely to a comprehensive guide for the Norman Music Festival, including interviews with headliners and a look at Blackwatch Studios. But we at LOOKatOKC always get a head start on things by focusing the previous issue on a local performer such as Sallee, who will play on two stages during the festival. In our minds, we’re already there.

Jump back into vinyl on April 21

f your idea of fun is ﬁnding new music and spinning around in a circle hundreds of times then you’re either a vinyl record or a fan of Record Store Day. For ﬁve years, April has been home of the day dedicated to celebrating the several hundred independent record stores in the U.S. On April 21, Okie vinyl lovers will line up outside their favorite record stores hours before they open, so use this column to educate yourself about what’s in store at your record store.

THE WINTER BOYS As if Stillwater’s Other Lives wasn’t busy enough touring throughout Europe and opening for Radiohead, the band’s frontman Jesse Tabish collaborated with Tyson Meade of the Chainsaw Kittens and Derek Brown of the Flaming Lips. The trio is known as the Winter Boys, and they prepped a vinyl release. The hand-screened 7” release features two tracks recorded this winter in Stillwater. “Winter Boys Cutting a Rug” is limited to 700 copies and is only available at Guestroom Records locations. Based on the solemn band name and album cover, I’m guessing this will sound more like sleepy Other Lives B-sides as opposed to hard rocking, weird Chainsaw Kittens cuts. I have a feeling this one will be very hard to come by in the future. Make sure to line up early for this release or get ready to scour eBay. I don’t suggest the latter.

THE FLAMING LIPS Oklahoma City’s weirdo rockers not only made the strangest Record Store Day release but also the most exciting one, too. By ﬂexing its clout in the indie music world, the Lips enlisted several artists ranging from Coldplay and Ke$ha to Biz Markie and Bon Iver to collaborate on “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends.” The result is 13 tracks of oddness. The high proﬁle collaborations are just the beginning of the release. A few rare versions of this album will include the blood of the collaborators. Wayne has the donations sitting in his fridge. He’s just waiting on the right vinyl to inject it into. ‘AGNOSTIC HYMNS & STONER FABLES’ – TODD SNIDER

odd Snider is at his troublemaking, buttonpushing best on “Agnostic Hymns & Stoner Fables,” as if that title didn’t announce his rabble-rousing intentions before you hear a single note. The album opener, “In the Beginning,” is the East Nashville songsmith’s version of the dawn of man, with that slightly shopworn, attitude-laden voice singing over ﬁddle and low-register electric guitar, “In the beginning man wondered to himself why oh why are we here ...’Til one day this one guy said to this other guy, he said / ‘Hey you see that guy over there?/ He’s got more than everybody else has got / To me, that don’t seem fair.’ / Well, the second guy agreed with the ﬁrst guy / Everybody else did too. /

‘Til they all got so worked up / They ﬁgured there was somethin’ they just had to do. / Divide his things up among each other / After they killed him, of course ...” And so it goes in Snider’s world. Human nature was nasty from the git-go and it just gets worse on the harmonicaheated, country-rocking “New York Banker,” which brings us into the modern day ﬁnancial crisis where “good things happen to bad people.” The down-and-dirty, twanging rural blues of “In Between Jobs” and even the deceptively mesmerizing folk-waltz twang of the album’s only cover, Jimmy Buffett’s “West Nashville Grand Ballroom Gown,” carry angry sentiments against the haves from the have-nots’ point of view. Snider’s a 21st-century protest

singer with a sharply pointed sense of humor, and he gets his point across quite effectively while underscoring his topical observations with exquisitely earthy Ameri-

‘BLUE CHIPS’ – ACTION BRONSON/PARTY SUPPLIES

diver Party Supplies and available as a free download, “Blue Chips” is proudly and loudly an East Coast revival album, heavily ladled with 1970s funk samples and garnished with left-ﬁeld head scratchers. Bronson’s New York is a place where people scream out of windows, just like the messed-up couple in “Thug Love Story 2012,” which is built on the vocal hook from the Flamingos “I Only Have Eyes for You.” In Bronson’s world, a gangsta victory is celebrated with culinary ﬁnesse, and Party Supplies keeps the beat loose and strange, looping the Ozark Mountain Daredevils’ “Jackie Blue” under “Dreamer,” Extreme’s “Rest in Peace” on “Pouches of Tuna” and, in the piece de resistance, Frank Zappa’s “Tell Me You Love Me” on “Expensive Pens.” Most East Coast purists’ grade-A beef with Bronson is that he cops too much from Ghostface, and it’s under-

gangsta foodie whose raps feel like equal parts Ghostface Killah and Rocco DiSpirito, Action Bronson mingles ingredients from the black market and the farmer’s market, drugs and haute cuisine, serving up thug life with a raspberrybalsamic reduction. An Albanian-American former chef shaped like a kettle but boasting sexual conquests like he was Lil Wayne, Bronson can take a gritty street opera and drop in a line about “bone marrow roasted, spread it on the rosemary bread, lightly toasted, drizzled with the vinaigrette” without much stretching. This is no joke: This is Action Bronson’s “Blue Chips,” the title of which connotes high-value stocks, poker or something to slather with ﬁre-roasted habanero puree. Produced by rising Queens, N.Y., crate

standable: Bronson’s style is built on the Wu-Tang MVP’s foundation, and most of “Blue Chips” can ﬁt seamlessly into a mix between “Supreme Clientele” and “Fishscale,” but while he indulges in the same kind of hardboiled stories, he’s not really poaching.

Since his ﬁrst forays after he hung up the chef’s coat and picked up the mic, Bronson is much improved as a storyteller and on “Blue Chips,” he serves up crime and grime and then tops it with a rich demi-glace. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘PROBABLE FLAWS’ – JOSH SALLEE

osh Sallee bestowed his second album with a humble title, “Probable Flaws,” but as the opening title track beautifully illustrates, the Oklahoma City-based rapper makes few mistakes on this followup to 2011’s “Return to Sender.” Producer Dante Jones cuts up Hall & Oates’ “Did It in a Minute” to create an ultrabright beat behind Sallee’s did-it-in-a-millisecond delivery, the kind of hyperkinetic rhyming that generates legends. He’s got “bigger dreams like sipping tea in Italy, speciﬁcally, in Sicily, with Miss Sallee on Christmas Eve,” and he puts it forth so effortlessly that his Sicilian holiday feels within reach. Rather than settle into a speciﬁc bandwidth in the hip-hop spectrum, Sallee moves freely through the

genre, delivering his rapid-fire verses over modern R&B beats on “Not Following” and then finding a slow-burn flow on “RIP to Regret,” a low-slung ballad built by producer Blev on a James Blake sample. This is a rapper with considerable polish to his delivery, but as his taste in sampling attests, Sallee is alternative hip-hop through and through. His fealty to the eccentric, uncompromised work of artists such as Kendrick Lamar comes through clearly on “Put Out” and the unbelievably brisk “Big Kid Bars.” “OKC to KC” quotes liberally from Beck’s “Loser,” but this is where Sallee makes salient points about coastal perceptions of his home state and the challenge of building a hip-hop foundation on red dirt soil. It’s the messiest track on “Probable Flaws” but stronger for it, because the frustration is felt all the way from

Sallee and guest rapper Joey Cool’s traded lines down to the rattling bottleneck guitar in the background. Sallee’s greatest power is strong imagery — he’s not just clocking syllables. On “Never Ever,” Sallee says

osh Sallee woke up on Monday, March 26 and announced on Twitter it was “Probable Flaws” day, but when the fast-rising, faster-rapping Oklahoma City emcee dropped his second album in two years, no one had “a case of the Mondays.” Thanks to the buzz coming out of South By Southwest and the multiplying size of Sallee’s live shows, “Probable Flaws” rolled out with no errors, and Twitter blew up with such force that it nearly knocked Sallee out of bed. “I woke up around 10, and by 11 o’clock I was getting a hashtag ‘Probable Flaws’ every 30 seconds,” said Sallee, who will perform at 7 p.m. April 28 at the Red Room, 114 W Main during the Norman Music Festival, as well as an afterparty later that evening at The Garage, 307 E Main. The ratio of positive-to-negative online responses to “Probable Flaws” clocked at 50-to-1 in the hours after its initial upload. A ﬂood of Tweets and strong reviews came in the wake of a SXSW showcase that also featured XV, Chevy Woods and Action Bronson, giving Sallee the chance to rock the mic in front of Wiz Khalifa and Jay-Z engineer Young Guru. It was time to think big after the SXSW surge, and according to Sallee’s manager, Gray Thomas, Sallee’s breakout success beyond the region is

looking more probable. “Young Guru, a legend, was standing five feet away from him performing,” said Sallee’s manager, Gray Thomas. “I couldn’t think of anybody else I’d rather have standing there, except maybe L.A. Reid.” “For me, the most interesting feeling of the whole thing was being like, wow: It’s time to physically prepare, mentally prepare,” Sallee said. “Prepare yourself for success on a national scale.” The artistic leap from last year’s “Return to Sender” to “Probable Flaws” can be heard in both Sallee’s confident, mile-a-minute syllabic flow and the bright, sonically diverse production on tracks such as “Big Kid Bars” and “Not Following.” The lion’s share of the beats and production came from Sallee’s roommate, Courtney “Blev” Blevins, with contributions from Dante Jones on the Hall and Oatessampling title track and Brain Gang Blue, the Dallas-based mastermind behind tracks by independent upstarts such as Kendrick Lamar, Schoolboy Q and Mac Miller. But much of the progress can be attributed to maturity and positive head space. Sallee, who grew up playing basketball in the Tulsa suburbs and went on to study at the University of Central Oklahoma, said that despite the bright and laid-back aura of the breakout track “So Chill,” “Return to Sender” was recorded during a season of loss. He broke up with a girlfriend after four years, lost a friend to suicide and his overall confidence in his career prospects was at low ebb, even as his crowds at Kamp’s were packing the place to the ceiling and he was being invited to perform at Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant’s home studio. “It was incredibly self-doubting at a time when we were actually experiencing success,” Thomas said. But Sallee has more confidence in his career following the “Probable Flaws” reception. The success of the SXSW showcase, held poolside at Austin’s Nice Kicks, and his reception at the Buffalo Lounge on Sixth Street, gave

the album a considerable boost. Then came “cosigns” from fellow artists such as music biz scion/ Schwayze mastermind Cisco Adler, people who were willing to put their names on the line for a Sallee endorsement, as well as a message from Sony Music expressing interest in the 24-yearold rapper. When he received the e-mail from Sony, Sallee said that a friend compared the event to a D-1 athlete getting his first letter of intent. Sony has not yet signed Sallee, but the corporate shout-out gave the rapper bragging rights, a bargaining chip that can help him engineer long-term success in a short term-oriented business. Thomas said he and Sallee will not sign any “360 deals,” the currently in-vogue business model in which labels take percentages of recordings, tours, television opportunities and publishing. If everything goes according to plan, Sallee would sign an imprint deal with a major, giving national distribution to his current label, Pairadime, and ensuring more creative control for his future recordings. In the meantime, Sallee and Thomas are planning a summer built around coastal dates, including plans for a New York showcase to give Sony a close-up look. Before the coasts, Thomas plans to get Sallee into at least five major Midwest markets, which will prepare him for east and west coast exposure in the eyes of the labels. “If you can get five to 10 on your own, they’ll give you three to five on each coast,” Thomas said. But Sallee said he will tread carefully on his way up — he is aware of the more-than-probable flaws in the music business. “If they say, ‘sign your name in blood and put on a dress — this is your initiation,’ well, I’m going to go work on the golf course,” he said. “I don’t want to ink my life over for a few years of happiness. If this is going to happen, it’s going to happen organically.”

The gang is back together for ‘Reunion’

he “American Pie” series developed a cult following by serving up steamy, seamy helpings of juvenile angst, adult insecurity, sexual humiliation and outrageous potty gags, always leavened with forgiving dollops of sweet sentimentality on top. But “American Reunion,” the fourth slice in the unabashedly cringe-inducing franchise — after “American Pie 1 and 2” and “American Wedding” (plus four tepid direct-to-video spinoffs) — tips the scales perilously toward gross comic gluttony. Unfortunately, the ingredients of this “Pie” are mostly stale. Sticking to the series’ pattern of following a core group of nerdy pals from East Great Falls High School — Jim (Jason Biggs), Oz (Chris Klein), Finch (Eddie Kaye Thomas) and Kevin (Thomas Ian Nicholas) — as they make a prom-night pact to lose their virginity, as they party-hearty at a summer resort and as the sexually awkward, pie-loving Jim ﬁnally weds “band geek” Michelle (Alyson Hannigan), “American Reunion” is just what the name implies. It’s time for the gang’s high school reunion, and the

friends, family and significant others return to their picturesque Michigan burg lugging along groaning loads of adult baggage. Jim and Michelle are now parents of a rambunctious, thumb-sucking boy and the magic — read that: sex — seems to have gone out of their marriage (not to mention the fact that Jim still has a thing for Internet porn and tube socks). Oz has a cool job as host of an L.A. sports talk show and a buxom bimbo girlfriend (“30 Rock’s” Katrina Bowden), but he still carries a torch for down-to-earth Heather (Mena Suvari). Kevin, sporting a weaselly beard, is a whipped, soap-opera-loving househusband with a successful working wife and a lingering longing for boring classmate Vicky (Tara Reid). And Finch arrives on a sleek motorcycle, a mysterious world traveler whose pompous tales of adventure mask some really mundane secrets. And then, of course, there’s the snarky, rabidly obnoxious Steve Stifler (Seann William Scott), the “Stifmeister,” now stuck in a dead-end office job but still prone to those rude, crude, troublemaking antics that dominate most films in the series. Various lesser classmates show up briefly (for instance,

Natasha Lyonne’s Jessica to set up a quick lesbian joke). Jim’s sweet-natured, now widowed dad (Eugene Levy) turns up in all his nattering glory, and he’s coaxed into a naughty flirtation with Stifler’s buxom mom (Jennifer Coolidge). Biggs’ nice-guy Jim is the steady center of the wildly episodic story that tries to tie up a lot of loose strands. But Scott’s gleefully misanthropic Stifler is the swizzle stick that stirs this stringently R-rated comic cocktail. Levy, as always, provides the sweet soul that takes a little of the edge off the over-the-top raunch. Co-directors and writers Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg are right in their comfort zone juggling this sort chaotic, episodic mishmash of a story that delivers sexually charged slapstick and raw bathroom humor with just enough heartfelt sentiment to make it palatable. And that’s probably the secret that makes the “American Pie” films — and “American Reunion” — such sure hits with fans. They may be terribly gross and raunchy, but they’re never really mean.

Hard to ﬁnd magic on screen in ‘Mirror Mirror’

ulia Roberts chews up the scenery and spits it back out again with great brio in her ﬁrst truly villainous role as the evil Queen in “Mirror Mirror.” And oh, what scenery it is. After all, this is a ﬁlm from Tarsem Singh, director of such spectacular spectaculars as the trippy “The Cell” and last year’s dreary “Immortals.” Basically, the scenery IS the movie — and the costumes, of course, from the late Eiko Ishioka. They dominate every moment of this cheeky, heavily tweaked version of “Snow White,” but at least they’re a marvel to watch. They’d better be, because the dialogue and the action are, for the most part, rather dull and weirdly devoid of energy. This anachronistic, genre-hopping fairy tale — I swear, there’s a “George of the Jungle” joke at one point — comes from screenwriters Marc Klein and Jason Keller from a story by Melisa Wallack. It begins with the beautiful, innocent Snow White (Lily Col-

lins, daughter of Phil), who’s just turned 18, trapped in her bedroom in a castle perched high on a precipitous cliff. Her father, the King (Sean Bean), set off into the woods one day long ago and is presumed dead; her stepmother, the Queen, has taken over the kingdom and tyrannically transformed a place that was once merry into a wasteland of poverty and strife. The Queen’s right-hand man is the butt-kissing Brighton (Nathan Lane), who keeps trying to tell her she’s broke, but she won’t listen. All she cares about is her status as the fairest of them all, which she reinforces by visiting a mirror housed in a thatched hut hidden dramatically in the middle of a dark, isolated lake. But fortunately, into her kingdom comes the young, gorgeous, single and (more importantly) wealthy Prince Alcott (Armie Hammer in a perfect bit of casting; he seems game to make fun of his all-American good looks). The Queen tries to woo him with a lavish ball, but the Prince only has eyes for Snow,

whom he’d encountered briefly in the forest earlier that day when neither of them realized the other was, you know, royal. When the Queen tries to have Snow killed out of jealousy, the young beauty escapes and makes a new home with the Seven Dwarves, who get actual back stories and some of the film’s funnier lines. None of them is named Dopey or Doc, but they do give Snow a tough-girl makeover, complete with the obligatory training montage. Collins has a lovely screen presence — she’s got this young Audrey Hepburn thing going — but she lacks a certain oomph, even after her character has learned to fight and supposedly found her inner strength. Roberts rules her at every turn, even when she flashes that iconic smile in cruel fashion. She seems to be reveling in playing a role that’s such a departure; that sense of joy only sporadically finds its way to the rest of the film. — Christy Lemire, Associated Press

Swing tracking for ‘Tiger 13’ almost there

With the Masters tournament being held this weekend and Tiger Woods coming off his ﬁrst victory in more than two years, “Tiger Woods PGA Tour 13’’ couldn’t arrive at a more opportune time. Video game golf has made some of the greatest strides of all sports titles over the years. The player customization is more detailed and the game physics truer to life than ever before. And “Tiger 13’’ (EA Sports, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99) lets you swing a club - or at least pretend to - from the comfort of your living room. The Xbox 360 version introduces Kinect-enabled swing tracking that allows the player to take a full cut with an imaginary club and see the results on the screen. The action is much like real golf: It can be sweet if things fall into line, but if you’re off by a little, you’re off by a lot. But the latest in golf game technology is not without its hiccups. Occasionally, in the middle of my backswing, my onscreen player’s club would blink around in different positions, only to return to the correct position when my hands came back down into the hitting zone. Things got a little better as I got closer to the holes - the slower motion required for short approach shots seemed to allow the Kinect sensor to monitor things a bit better and deliver a more truly tracked swing.

Then came the putting woes. Lining up putts requires a series of hand motions - but as I put my hands back together to grasp the imaginary putter, the path was nudged offline slightly. This happened over and over again, and had to continually readjust my aim. Often I just hit the darn ball and hoped I guessed right. This putting alignment mayhem made me reach for the traditional Xbox controller. The Kinect swing method is worth trying in all the different game modes, but the standard controller is quicker, easier and more accurate. As long as you’re connected to the Internet, almost everything you accomplish in “Tiger 13’’ - whether you’re playing solo or in online tournaments - earns you coins. You can use the in-game currency to buy rounds at downloadable courses or “boost pins,’’ which may gave you a few extra yards on drives or some better lies in the rough. You can also seek assistance from a caddie, who advises you on which clubs to play, what stance to use and other nuances that help shape your shots. The caddie isn’t available in every mode, but he’s handy when he’s there. Finally, it’s a blast playing the Tiger Legacy Challenge, where assume Woods’ playing persona from childhood through adult PGA Tour domination. A poignant touch comes early on when Woods’ late father, Earl, is teaching the game to toddler Tiger. The challenges range from chipping balls into a backyard pool to popping shots close to the pin from deep in the rough. Tiger Legacy gives you an insidethe-ropes feel of what it’s like to be Tiger - to be that driven. And when the fun of the Kinect controls subsides, that feeling lingers when playing the game. ‘The Show’ offers amazing MLB experience

o video game can duplicate the drama of the end of the 2011 Major League Baseball season. You remember: The historic collapse of the Red Sox. The Rays’ late-inning recovery from a seven-run deﬁcit on the last day of the season. The Cardinals coming back twice in game six of the World Series and eventually winning the trophy. It’s still early in the 2012 season I’m simulating on “MLB 12: The Show’’ (Sony, for the PlayStation 3, $59.99; for the Vita, $39.99), so I don’t know if I’ll see those sort of September-October heroics again. But I’ve already witnessed plenty of stirring offensive explosions, nerve-racking extrainning duels and an Opening Day, two-hit shutout by the Nationals’ Stephen Strasburg, each made all the more exciting because I was controlling them. “The Show,’’ perhaps more than any baseball video game before it, delivers the feeling that you’re in the middle of a high-pressure major league contest. Sony does a ﬁne job recreating ballpark atmosphere, but the real trick comes from the precision and intuitiveness of its controls. You never feel like you’re wrestling with the controller just to, say, make a runner try to score from second on a single. My favorite feature remains the Road to the Show, in which you create a player from scratch and try to work your way up from AA ball. Almost as addictive is the new Diamond Dynasty, in which you build an entire

team, mixing real and fictional players. To improve your players’ skills, you need to earn cash by competing in games against the computer or other humans online. But the most groundbreaking element of “The Show’’ is the integration between its PS3 and Vita versions. If you’re going to be away from your home console for a while, you can save your season to the “cloud,’’ then download it to your Vita from on the road. It’s a terrific feature that I hope will be added to more PS3/Vita games. While “The Show’’ continues its championship reign, “Major League Baseball 2K12’’ (2K Sports, for the Xbox 360, PS3, $59.99; Wii, $39.99; PC, $29.99; Nintendo DS, PlayStation Portable, PlayStation 2, $19.99) feels like it’s playing out the string. It’s an adequate simulation - and, if you don’t own a Sony console, it’s your only choice. The hitting and pitching mechanics are fine, but the sluggishness of the base runners and fielders is irritating. And when an infielder does catch up to a ground ball, you have to contend with a “throw meter’’ - misjudge your timing and that easy toss to first will end up in the dugout. It’s an attempt to make fielding just a bit more interactive, but it feels like one gimmick too many. The most promising addition to “2K12,’’ called MLB Today, invites you to play as your favorite team, day-by-day, as the real season unfolds. It may be just the thing to make the 2012 season bearable for disgruntled Mets or Orioles fans. From The Associated Press

he big man wanted both to check their egos at the door. He wanted his All-Star teammates to cool it on any stat-padding and selﬁshness and anything else rooted in the wrong place that can work its way into a marathon season. Perkins wanted Durant and Westbrook both to sell out for the team. “We’re getting close to the end of the season, and everything is over with as far as the All-Star Game and all that other stuff,” Perkins said. “So we can just concentrate on getting better as a ballclub and taking steps to trying to reach our goal.” If you’re searching for what’s gotten into Westbrook over the past two weeks, we suggest you start with that conversation. Something about it seems to have done wonders for Westbrook. Ever since, Westbrook has shot up to special. He’s taken his already spectacular skill set to an even higher level in the blink of an eye and captained the Thunderon a six-game winning streak. Westbrook used Sunday’s 92-78 win overChicago to conﬁrm what has been clear for weeks: he’s in the midst of the best ball of his career. “He’s grown up right in front of our eyes,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. Over the past six games, Westbrook has averaged 28.7 points on 50.3 percent shooting. He’s added 5.8 assists, 2.8 rebounds, 2.3 steals and just 2.5 turnovers. Beyond the raw numbers, Westbrook has demolished nearly every opponent

he’s faced in the past six games, and it’s how he’s attacked his assignments that has stood out most. The winning streak started with Westbrook thoroughly outplaying Clippers guard Chris Paul. Westbrook scored just 19 points but was terriﬁc defending the pick-and-roll and limiting Paul’s effectiveness. Two nights later, Westbrook scored a career-high 45 points in 50 minutes against Minnesota and never lost his head against the always irritating J.J. Barea. In the ﬁrst game against Miami, Westbrook played through a 4-for-16 shooting night and remained sound defensively while continuing to get teammates involved offensively. Against Portland and the Lakers last

week, Westbrook was simply unstoppable, scoring 32 and 36 points, respectively. Against the Bulls without Derrick Rose, Westbrook abused backup C.J. Watson in the post, in transition, in the pick-and-roll and from his sweet spot, the free-throw line extended elbow. His ﬁnal line: a game-high 27 points on 10-of-18 shooting, three rebounds, ﬁve assists, four steals, zero turnovers and zero fouls. “To me, he’s fearless,” said Chicago coach Tom Thibodeau. “He sets the tone for them. All you have to do is look at their record. That says a lot.” To some, the record isn’t enough. While Durant seems to get the glory for all 40 of the Thunder’s wins, West-

brook seems to be viewed as the goat for the team’s 12 losses. Everything from Westbrook’s body language to his turnovers and his number of shot attempts has been criticized over the past 3 1/2 seasons. “I don’t listen to it,” said Rose, a friend and summer workout partner of Westbrook’s. “Almost the same grief that he gets I’ll probably get too by the way that we just play the game. We laugh about it. I actually care about what people say. But you can’t stop people from stating their opinions.” Rose called Westbrook a great player and said he likes how Westbrook has improved his decision-making and ability to get everyone involved while also staying aggressive. It’s exactly what Perk wanted his point guard to do. “His attitude has just been crazy, in a great way; the way that he’s been coming out and encouraging teammates,” Perkins said. “One thing I notice about him is that he’s trying to get people more involved early. “I think he’s been doing a great job. He’s been a pleasure to play with. He’s deﬁnitely the key to why we’re winning these games now the way we’re winning them.” Beaming with a smile as wide as the Bricktown Canal, Westbrook talked about how much fun he is now having. He explained that his success stems in large part to simply slowing down. And then came the best part, the scary part. “I’m still learning,” Westbrook said. “And I’m going to continue to learn and continue to get better.”

Making Kevin Durant is putting together the best season of his NBA career. Maybe not from as a scorer, but as a rebounder, defender and better overall basketball player S T O R Y B Y D A R N E L L M AY B E R R Y, S T A F F WRITER ne is the league’s reigning MVP. The other has thrust himself into the conversation for this year’s award. And yet Derrick Rose and Kevin Loveboth have said it’s Thunder forward Kevin Durant who has to be considered the front-runner to win this year’s hardware. Twice in nine days, Durant had the perfect platform to further make his case as the Thunder took on the Miami Heat. In the ﬁrst meeting between the two leading candidates, Durant dominated James in every respect while leading the Thunder to a 16-point win before a nationally televised audience. The rematch is set for a prime time telecast on ESPN2, and many believe Durant can sway more votes, if not wrap up the award altogether, with a second strong showing. “With what Kevin Durant is doing,” Love said, “I think he is just taking his team above and beyond … so I think you really have to start off that conversation with Kevin.” Durant, of course, shies away from the conversation. He has repeatedly tried to downplay the matchup and shift the attention back on the teams. But in the next breath, Durant admits the award is something he would like to add to his stable of trophies. “Why not?” Durant asked rhetorically. “Only one person gets MVP every single year. There are so many great players in this league so of course you want to win one. But it’s not my concern. I just want to come out there and keep getting better every single game.” Durant is stringing together the best season of his career. Maybe not from a statistical standpoint in terms of scoring, but Durant has taken great strides as a rebounder, defender and playmaker. “I think he’s diversiﬁed his bonds,” said Thunder guard Royal Ivey. “He’s becoming a complete player.” James, meanwhile, is a two-time winner of the Most Valuable Player Award. the heavy favorite to win the honor for the third time in four years. But a recent rough patch, coupled with Durant’s head-turning performance in their head-to-head meeting on March 25 in Oklahoma City, has narrowed the gap. Only a handful of other players — Lakers guard Kobe Bryant, San Antonio guard Tony Parker, Thunder guard Russell Westbrook and Clippers guard Chris Paul — are even in the discussion. Durant doesn’t ﬁgure to be taken off that shortlist anytime soon. “You could probably mark the conversation down for the next decade or so,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. “The guy is only going to get better. I love what he’s about. He’s about winning, and if you’re one of the better players and you’re winning the way we’re winning, he’s always going to be in consideration.” Both Durant and James are discredited by some for playing alongside two other stars. James has Dwyane Wade (questionable Wednesday with a knee bruise) and Chris Bosh. Durant has Westbrook and James Harden, presumably this year’s Sixth Man of the Year in waiting. “But Kevin’s been playing amazing this year and we have a tremendous record,” Westbrook countered. “I don’t really think there’s too much anybody can say different about it.” Durant insists he will not attempt to use this second meeting with Miami to win over voters. Westbrook, though, knows how difficult it might be for Durant to avoid turning the game into a one-one-one showdown. “It can be tough, but at the same time Kevin is real humble and he’s teamﬁrst,” Westbrook said. For his part, Durant genuinely seems more focused on seeing his team bounce back from a lost against Memphis. Everything else, as Durant is fond of saying, will take care of itself. “We got to continue playing hard,” Durant said. “I’m looking forward to another challenge and we’ll see what happens.”

A new farm-to-fork concept opens in Norman, offering local ingredients in an imaginative menu

hree sisters and a veteran local chef have combined to create a farm-to-fork concept aimed at changing how Oklahomans view food in a way the whole family can enjoy. The sisters are Heather Steele, Melissa Scaramucci and Abby Clark. The chef is Ryan Parrott. The restaurant is called LOCAL, at 2262 W Main St. in the Normandy Creek Shopping Center. The 10,000-square-foot space was home to Furr’s Cafeteria for years, but no one would guess it without prior knowledge. After a short walk through a covered patio, visitors enter the lobby with its swank check-in desk. A few paces down a curved corridor is a market and gift shop to the right and Localville’s entrance on the left. Localville is an on-site child care operation with playhouses, screening room and space for infants to catch a little peace and quiet. The idea began with Melissa, who along with her husband, Todd, visited a hotel restaurant that included a children’s club. “We thought, ‘Why can’t we have one of these in Oklahoma?’” she said. When that conversation developed into a fullﬂedged idea, Melissa reached out ﬁrst to family. Sister Abby was a third-grade teacher, and Heather has a retail management background. The sisters then reached out to longtime friend Robert Painter, Parrott’s partner at the Iguana

Painter sought the help of Parrott, who decided the concept was too good to give up to another chef. “I was helping them find a chef and decided I didn’t want another chef to have the kitchen,” Parrott said. Just beyond the market and Localville junction is a bar, featuring local beer and draft wine, that is the last stop before entering the expansive dining room. LOCAL has seating for about 200. Overlooking the dining room is the open kitchen where Parrott, who developed one of the city’s top reputations with his Table One chef’s table concept and in the Deep Fork Group kitchens, oversees ingredients that are nearly 100 percent local. “The seafood obviously isn’t local,” Parrott said. “But DeLancey Miller is our fishmonger, and I have the utmost respect for his methods.” Miller’s DeLancey Street Seafood sells only fish that are in season and works with fishermen who use sustainable techniques. “Citrus fruit and a few other fruit aren’t local,” Parrott said. “But everything else is.”

FLAVORS OF OKLAHOMA LOCAL’s intention is to celebrate the flavors of Oklahoma, but the menu reaches around the globe for inspiration. “All of us love food,” Melissa said. “We all have favorites, and we wanted the menu to reflect our passion for food.” Entrees, which range from $10 to $18, include a burger, meatloaf cupcakes, chicken pho, Moroccan-style lamb, fish tacos, salmon, roasted chicken, pork belly, Bouef Bourguignon and ratatouille. Lunch also includes a Berkshire pork sandwich and Reuben sandwich. Pasta dishes include Lobster Mac and Cheese, Paparadelle with Roasted Mushrooms, Turkey Lasagna, Sweet Potato Ravioli, Ox-Tail Ravioli, a play on stroganoff and daily risotto. The Bacon and Egg Salad, which includes a flash-fried poached egg and Peach Crest Farms arugula, is a highlight from the variety of salads. The appetizer

menu is highlighted by Risotto Meatballs, which are sure to be ordered as entrees. The prosciutto-wrapped, goat cheese-stuffed dates are addictive. Both the tapenade and carrot dip offer plenty of ﬂavor, and the BLT Deviled Eggs will doubtlessly be popular with Oklahoma palates. Parrott said if you like his current dessert list, which includes Mascarpone Apple Spice Cake and Deconstructed Black Forest Cake, to name a couple, then you should stock up, because they won’t be around long. “I wrote the dessert menu with a winter opening in mind,” Parrott said. “Spring just started, so we’re already looking at some new ideas.” Parrott said his farm-to-fork menu won’t rotate as frequently as the one at Ludivine. “The dishes are going to stay on the menu for a while, but the components will change with the seasons,” he said.

FINE FAMILY DINING The New American Cuisine is served in a family-friendly ﬁne dining atmosphere. Floors are polished concrete, and tables aren’t adorned with linens. But glassworks and a small art gallery in the rear of the restaurant make it clear that patrons are in for a special evening. Parents who want to experience an intimate evening without ﬁnding a baby sitter can bring the kids, who order from a special menu. Children’s orders are rushed so youngsters can retire to Localville before Mom and Dad are through with their appetizers. Experiencing expertly made food made from close to a dozen Oklahoma producers is sure to move the needle on how we view dining out. The success of LOCAL could be a cornerstone in how the rest of the country views Oklahoma’s dining scene.

And a thousand in floral fabrics, Lord Byron (to whom this quote is usually attributed) might have added, especially had he witnessed the evolution of floral fashion into modern day. Flowers have never been far from fashion. Mother Nature’s delicate works of art are woven into the very fabric of fashion throughout the ages. So it’s no surprise that catalogs showing this spring and summer’s looks are fi lled with fanciful florals. But this season, there’s a twist — brighter colors and bolder patterns. “We’re mixing up prints and colors in a way we’ve never done before,” said Cindi Shelby, owner of Ruth Meyers. Today’s florals are far from the heavy designs woven into brocade silks of the Middle Ages. They’re practically the opposite of floral tapestries with their backgrounds of quiet florals. Wallflowers? Forget about it. Today’s florals aren’t shy. They don’t whisper; they shout in shades of neon not seen since the ’80s. They’re still sweet, mind you, but with more than a touch of “Mad Men”-style sass. “The newness here would be the neon feel,” Shelby said. “They’re so bright.” Stor y cont inues on Page 2

NEW RULE S FOR FLORAL Here are the rules for today’s florals: be bold, be bright and make them your own. “In the past, florals were more subtle,” said Heather Loyd, store manager of Talbots in Edmond. Whereas in previous seasons florals were often used as embellishments rather than as an allover statement, “Now we’re seeing them all over.” A few years ago, the big deal was to throw a floral scarf over the safe solids fashion embraced, to create a fresh look. Today’s florals don’t have to stand alone. Couture houses are swathing models in a melange of mixed (not matched) florals. Abandon the idea of “matchy-matchy,” Loyd said. It’s tres chic to combine floral patterns. Another incarnation of today’s fresh florals is flowery crop pants, if you’re daring enough to wear them. “Even if you’re not girly-girly, it’s just fun to put a ﬂoral with a stripe and be bold about it,” Loyd said. “Different and fun.”

NJ Stevenson’s “Fashion: A Visual History from Regency & Romance to Retro & Revolution” is a beautiful new book that takes the reader on a tour of fashion trends and the reasons for them. Stevenson explains that after World War II, as soldiers returned home and reintegrated themselves into the job market, women were encouraged to “reprise their traditional roles as homemakers.”

Stevenson describes this incarnation of 1950s styles as dolllike and ultrafeminine, emphasized by sweet, innocent floral patterns. The floral day dress was a radical departure from Rosie the Riveter and the practical styles that were adopted when husbands went off to war and women took on the workplace. In 1947, Christian Dior launched his Corolle line which made him a household name. “The New Look,” as Life magazine dubbed the line, became the silhouette of the era: form-fitted bodices atop full, flowing skirts, despite American and European government balking about “wasteful” and excessive use of fabric after strict wartime rationing. Corolle, a botanical term for the opening of a flower, was an apt name for Dior’s line that featured fresh florals. Dior’s line, Vogue patterns and matching mother-daughter dresses along with Horrockses’ ready-to-wear fashions were signs of a lighter, happier postwar time — and perhaps were even a relieved nod to wartime victory gardens where people grew not flowers but their own food out of necessity.
