wouldn’t be angry if you used LOOKatOKC as a giant coaster. But only if you’re sipping a local brew and after you’ve read our thirst-quenching cover story by Nick Trougakos. His feature is an exhaustive peek into how local craft beer brewers went from zeros to craft beer heroes. People almost die, lose their jobs and follow their dreams all in the name of beer. I’m glad Nick liked this idea and made it his own. Great work, Nick. This is easily the most detailed story I’ve read during my tenure as LOOKatOKC’s editor, and I hope you take some time to read it. My goal has always been to remind people about what makes this city special. And I’m not interested in doing it in some gooey, sickly sweet PR sort of way. We even point to struggle and frustraBY NATHAN POPPE tion throughout Nick’s story about LOOKATOKC EDITOR things that are holding our city back, NPOPPE@OPUBCO.COM with that said it’s still getting better here every day and we have an organized piece of evidence that backs that idea up. One of the first beers I ever had was a COOP Ale Works Native Amber, and I wouldn’t mind if it were my last. We have the ability to make some great things here, and I love seeing people enjoy what they do. I think our hometown brewers are living reminders of that. Also, I can’t forget to thank Kimberly Greer for handling the cover art. She’s done label design for Anthem Brewing, and we tasked her with creating an original piece of art to grace the front of LOOKatOKC. I think she did a great job and further proves how talented our Oklahoma artists are. A sincere thank you, Kimberly. Editing this issue has made me thirsty. So, I’m going to go find the coolest looking bottle of Prairie Artisan Ales and call it a night. Cheers.

Jenny Lewis — ‘Late Bloomer’
A big part of growing up is developing the ability to speak clearly about the stuff that weighs heavily on your heart and conscience. Jenny Lewis’s third studio record “The Voyager” does so beautifully, presenting all her most complex emotions as if she were holding a very confident public reading of the juiciest pages of her own diary. In particular is the mid-album epic “Late Bloomer,” a song where an older Lewis reflects on a teenage version of herself who seethed jealousy for a dopey male songwriter, but not for his singing or guitar playing. “I wanted to kiss her / but I hadn’t the nerve,” Lewis sings of the woman who falls, not for her as she hoped, but for him. “The Voyager” is full of these unexpected twists and lyrical left-turns, all
MATT CARNEY All about creating a deeper relationship with music.
set to a very laidback, lush sound that was produced by Ryan Adams in his Hollywood recording studio. Musically, it makes the range of sounds on her previous solo records and entire Rilo Kiley discography look much smaller, especially thanks to Adams’ terrific and understated guitar playing. But like always, Lewis’s vocals are the spotlight of the mix, guiding you the record’s many emotions with a measured confidence.
Lil B — ‘No Black Person Is Ugly’ If you live in Oklahoma City and know about Berkeley, Calif. rapper Lil B then you’re probably either somebody who listens to a lot of rap on the internet or you read somewhere that he put a curse on Kevin Durant for dissing him in 2011. And while KD probably hasn’t become a Lil B fan anytime recently, I can’t imagine the Thunder’s star player disagreeing with the sentiment expressed on Lil B’s latest dreamy, lo-fi release, “No Black Person Is Ugly.” Lil B’s style has always been pretty stream-of-consciousness and that can be a barrier to entry for listeners used to more conventional rap, but he’s especially lucid here: It’s like you can hear his thoughts articulating in real time around that ambling guitar sample. If any Lil B song ever had a chance of poking its head into the mainstream, it’s this one.
while it might feel abrupt on a casual listen, it’s really an emotional roller coaster ride if you follow the lyrics. The song “Falling in Love Again” in particular cuts through to the LP’s tender, self-conscious little heart. Confronted by the realization that he’s actually starting to care about somebody, singer Barry Johnson can only stammer out simple observations about the object of his new affections: “I think you’re funny / I like your friends / I like the way they treat you.”
Jessie Ware — ‘Share It All’
British pop singer Jessie Ware didn’t so much break out in 2012, as if with some loud, audacious EDM single. No, Ware charmed her way into listeners’ hearts and headphones, achieving a subtle, smaller sort of pop sound on her debut LP, “Devotion.” There were moments of elation, sure, but they came in the releases of little tensions in her whispery vocals, and the portraits of
intimacy she painted with her lyrics. Judging by the new singles that Ware’s put out in advance of her second album, “Tough Love,” she’s doubling down on the minimalism by adding layers of warm R&B. On “Share It All,” which she co-wrote with fellow crooner Romy Madley-Croft of The XX, her vocals swim around in low key synthesizers cut straight out of an ‘80s Prince record. Ware’s proving that pop doesn’t always have to be fireworks: Sometimes all it takes is a whisper.
Christopher Owens — ‘Nothing More Than Everything To Me’ Fronting the now-defunct San Francisco indie-rock act Girls and with his debut solo record “Lysandre,” Christopher Owens, has proven himself to be one of the finest writers of love songs of his generation. Owens excels at sad and uncertain love songs, but I like his saccharine love songs best; they’re gooey tunes with sweet sentiments that make you smile the way you do when you’re holding a puppy dog. Owens’ latest single “Nothing More Than Everything To Me” definitely falls in this saccharine category, but it’s dressed up in new clothes. Gospel and country influences were apparent in his previous work, but they’re at the forefront here, taking turns in the spotlight. Owens’ guitarist rips a twangy Telecaster solo right out of a Dwight Yoakam record to kick the song off and a backing gospel chorus guides it skyward for the finish.
Joyce Manor — ‘Falling in Love Again’ California punks Joyce Manor packed a lot into their 19-minute third LP, the excellently named “Never Hungover Again.” It’s got unsuccessful attempts to impress girls, friends who join the army, regrettable tattoos and lots and lots of especially specific details. So Cover art for “Never Hungover Again” from California punk band Joyce Manor. Photo provided

teve Schlegel is a man about town and his favorite way to get from point A to point B is on two wheels. Schlegel got into the bicycle retail business at the age of 12 when he worked at The Bicycle Store in Oklahoma City. He then opened Schlegel Bicycles in 1988 in south OKC under the name Bicycle Store Too and finally moved to its current location in Automobile Alley in 2007. If you’ve met Schlegel, you already know he’s full of personality and loves a good conversation with a nice cold beer. What you may not know is that he’s a self-proclaimed “Mr. Fix-it.” “I love building and fixing stuff — home repairs, cars, “Look at electronics,” me” focuses he said in a on creative phone interpeople and view. “You projects based name it, in Oklahoma. and

I may have fixed it. I love saving money, and I am a huge ‘do-it-yourself guy.’ ” Although fixing things is a favorite pastime, it’s his cycling passion that keeps him feeling alive. “Most don’t know about some of my past success in the cycling world,” Schlegel said. “I’m hiding behind all my fat I put on these last few years.” Self-deprecation is part of his charm and lighthearted persona. His resume is anything but modest with numerous cycling awards in his distant and near past. “I have won multiple Oklahoma State Championship medals in all disciplines of cycling (road, mountain, cyclocross, time trial, triathlon and criterium racing) from 1986 to present,” he said. “Most recently I have completed multiple half and full iron-distance triathlons.” For those unfamiliar with the lingo, an iron-distance triathlon challenging race involving swimming, cycling and running. It’s a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike ride followed by a 26.2 mile run. When he’s not cycling, which seems like never (he had just done a 70-mile bike ride when we talked), he’s doing one of two things — eating at a local restaurant or serving on multiple community boards. “I love good food, wine and beer,” Schlegel said. “Hence, the reason I am still very active to keep from growing in size.”

DRINK & DRAW
W
elcome to maybe the weirdest edition of our collaboration with Drink & Draw, the event that invites doodlers of all skill levels to gather on a weekly basis in Oklahoma City. In case you’re new to the party, here’s the rundown. Every Thursday night from 8 to 11, Drink & Draw is hosted at any of three locations in the metro. On the third and fourth Thursday of the month, the event is held at Tree & Leaf Clothing in the Plaza District. And that’s where you’ll encounter the Drink & Draw Challenge. After a random theme is selected, you’re kindly requested to draw on specially designed Drink & Draw paper and then the results are published once a month in LOOKatOKC. This issue’s theme challenged artists to draw Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne sleepwalking in outer space. It’s been a pleasure to see new faces join the festivities, and I hope to see more. The summer months are little slower than usual so now is an opportune time to join the fun. It’s really just an excuse to show off the talented artists in our city and invite people with a hint of artistic aspiration to share their gift. Again, Drink & Draw is an invitation to an open dialogue in the art community. One story or drawing wouldn’t do this event justice. Instead we are making this a monthly celebration of all things awesome. Pens, pencils and markers of all shapes and sizes are welcome. It’s just another reason to LOOKatOKC. — Nathan Poppe, LOOKatOKC editor

SHABAZZ PALACES, ‘LESE MAJESTY’
S
habazz Palaces’ “Lese Majesty” is an epic. Ishmael Butler, one-half of the intergalactic hip-hop duo Shabazz Palaces, is the album’s hero. Known as Butterfly when he won a Grammy in 1994 with the jazz-rap trio Digable Planets, he now prefers to be called Palaceer Lazaro. If that’s not enough pretense, take into account that the new album is broken into seven astral suites designed to assist listeners through the Palaceer’s dense, philosophical narrative covering eternal landmarks, cheating puppeteers, inferior artists and eating cake. Contained in the fourth suite entitled “Pleasure Milieu” is the song “#CAKE.” In 2014, it’s easy to assume this is Shabazz Palaces’ way to get a song trending on Twitter. A quick search reveals that not only does Shabazz Palaces lack a Twitter account but also there are thousands of literal cake enthusiasts in the world. Instead, the song references the timeless proverb as filtered through Palaceer’s hook: “I’m having my cake and I’m eating cake.” Coupled with the hashtag,
LOOKATOKC.COM
the track comes across as mocking society’s addiction to consuming pleasure, “#CAKE” not excluded. It also takes aim at popular rappers who use their songs to flaunt their riches, unaware that their wealth is temporary. The notion is amplified one song later when Palaceer unveils “Colluding Oligarchs” as the dark powers-that-be who are waiting to take it away. “Lese Majesty” is not the future of hip-hop. It’s closer to a blueprint (or a “Sonic MythMap,” according to the last track) of what hip-hop could be if all rappers exercised verbosity with a wider range. Palaceer’s range of topics on “Lese Majesty” feels extremely wide and can be difficult to parse. Regardless, I’d be hard-pressed to find any other group in hiphop taking chances and trying to shake things up as much as Shabazz Palaces. “Lese Majesty” is an interstellar odyssey that manages to be futuristic and ancient simultaneously. It simply requires its listeners to be as brave and open-minded as its creators.

SPOON, ‘THEY WANT MY SOUL’
I
t begins like a time bomb. A drumbeat sounding like gunshots counts down to the first electric guitar strum of Spoon’s eighth studio album. Even though it has been four and a half years since “Transference,” it takes only seconds for “They Want My Soul” to prove the wait was worth it. “Rent I Pay” is an explosive album opener that highlights the stop-start rhythmic technique that has become Spoon’s calling card for decades. It’s an exhilarating relief for Spoon fans, confirming that the band hasn’t lost a drop of energy this late in its career. Just as quick as it began, “Rent I Pay” abruptly ends and gives way to the most magical Spoon moment since “Jonathon Fisk” transitioned into “Paper Tiger” on the landmark 2002 album “Kill The Moonlight.” Only two songs into “They Want My Soul,” Spoon decides to give us a song seemingly crafted in heaven. “Inside Out” slows down and stretches out into space, where Britt Daniels sings, “There’s intense gravity in you. I’m just your satellite.” Then a harp solo kicks in that I can only imagine was performed by an angel. It’s tough to peg what makes “They Want My Soul” one of Spoon’s best records to date. After repeat listens, I think it’s because Daniels doesn’t hold back, and he alone sells every one of these songs. Hearing Daniels whimper, snarl, plead and hum along to lead single “Do You” highlights that age has been kind to his vocal cords. Perhaps his brief 2012 side project Divine Fits reinvigorated him, or maybe a little time off was all it took to record an album this refreshing. Either way, Daniels has never sounded better. Spoon has been an underdog for far too long. I’m reminded of when Phoenix released “Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix” and how it catapulted the artist into a festival headliner. I feel Spoon has been knocking at that door for some time, and “They Want My Soul” could be the album that finally opens that door. In a world overrun by electronic dance music and DJs, we’re overdue for some good old-fashioned rhythm and soul.

THE RAVEONETTES, ‘PE’AHI’
M
ore than a decade into their prestigious and vastly under-appreciated career, Danish noise pop geniuses The Raveonettes find a beautiful medium between the snap and snarl of their earlier releases like the “Whip It On” EP and the darker, moodier delivery of “In and Out of Control” to deliver “Pe’Ahi.” Raveonettes mastermind Sune Rose Wagner, who has helmed every release of the Danish duo, has been busy over the past few years as the world of garage rock and psych has slowly come to realize a natural ear for the sound. He can be found in production roles for bands like Dum Dum Girls, Crocodiles, No Joy and many others. Truly, it can be said that The Raveonettes were at the forefront of the garage rock revival of the early 2000s, and “Pe’Ahi” sees them returning to form, proving why they are brilliant with their personal signature of catchy, irresistible hooks and layers of beautiful fuzz and reverb. What jumps out from the word go on “Endless Sleeper” is that classic Raveonettes’ fuzz that is often duplicated but never replicated. One difference to note from previous releases is the percussion seems to stand out a bit more. Whether it’s turned up in the mix or genuinely more creative like on “Endless Sleeper,” it’s obviously been running around in Wagner’s head that this is a detail that deserves
LOOKATOKC.COM
more attention than it had been getting. The band uses this discovery to its advantage throughout “Pe’Ahi.” Songs like “Killer in the Streets” have an almost hip-hop feel to the percussion, as Wagner and the unmistakably talented Sharin Foo weave vocals in and out in a way only they can do. “Z-Boys” fully embraces the sound of The Raveonettes’ first LP “Chain Gang of Love,” with that massive wall of fuzz washing over the listener while mixing tiny elements of its severely underrated release “Pretty in Black,” giving the overall feeling of a sort of sugar-sweet impending doom, whether it be falling in and out of love — or the drama of too many nights out. Wagner and Foo have always had a knack for putting you right in the middle of dark, dreary nights on their own time. Where songs like “A Hell Below” have you bopping and skipping down a rain-ruined dark street at the beginning of your night, “The Rains of May” has you skulking slowly back the other direction, soaked to the bone in booze and rain, the love of your life fading slowly into memory and deeper still into what can only be described as your imagination of how your life went versus what actually happened. It’s this relationship The Raveonettes have with mood that truly gives their releases a feeling that they know what life’s gristle is all about. That feeling of loss and failure that’s sugar-coated by Wagner and Foo’s ear for pop and generally catchy music is something they execute perfectly. Somehow, with “Kill!” the
album review
Raveonettes even make the feeling of the loss of love from a dream girl and that feeling of death and doom seem sexy. To put it bluntly: Rock doesn’t get much smarter than The Raveonettes. For a record so loud and so massive, you’d think it would be difficult to describe “Pe’Ahi” as crisp, clean and precise, yet that’s exactly what it is. Nothing on The Raveonettes’ most recent foray into pop brilliance is there without reason. — Kellen McGugan, entertainment writer

ALVVAYS, ‘ALVVAYS’
T
he beautiful bliss of a summer steeped in nonchalant freedom rings from every corner of Toronto’s Alvvays’ self-titled debut, but not in that sugary, gone-in-aweek sort of way. Like so few of its contemporaries, Alvvays has crafted a record that notes impressions left on the artist. Whether it be musically or personally, “Alvvays” takes you to places of the band’s imagination. Places where summer can run free with the end painfully waiting like the grim reaper. That inevitable end sees the band members wearing their hearts on their sleeves, letting it all hang out in a refreshing and irresistible blend of garage and bobbing indie-pop. “Adult Diversion,” as the title suggests, finds the band cruising down their street at 2 a.m., legs dangling out of the car, enjoying the company of now. Immediately the breezy and intoxicating guitars grab your attention. It’s the kind of work that will make a permanent home in your head for weeks. “Ones Who Love You” is an absolute standout, with a beating-heart drum machine and a gorgeous musical composition that not only brings back memories, but shows the potential to create them also. Molly Rankin, who does a beautiful job with vocals throughout the record, gives this song that extra bit of feeling it needs to make it something special. In fact, that’s one of the great parts of “Alvvays,” as nothing feels contrived or full of itself. The band plays to its strengths of a great pop sensibility and a knack for making listeners close their eyes, sway and grin. That feeling has been lost in translation a number of times through the years, but Alvvays with its debut makes it easy to be comfortable in your own skin. “Party Police” is a great example of comfort, even when that comfort isn’t the comfort you wanted or thought you were going to get. Picture a downpour of a summer, befriending someone you have a crush on but never having the guts to make it happen. This is exactly the kind of record every kid going back to college should be listening to. It’s bursting at the seams with regret and reflection. Love lost in complacency, that feeling where you can get lost in that special someone’s beauty but, after a time apart, all of the little things seem to get lost and you’re stuck with this imagined version of them. Alvvays forces you to confront and deal with those feelings, and though it may be difficult, it’s something everyone has or will experience. For better or worse, Alvvays will be there to help you along the way.

Biopic doesn’t sugarcoat eccentric James Brown’s life The James Brown biopic “Get on Up” doesn’t sugarcoat the tumultuous life and eccentric personality of the Godfather of Soul (played by Chadwick Boseman). But it also won’t cultivate a new respect for the singer. Rather than follow Brown’s life chronologically, director Tate Taylor (who also directed “The Help”) employs a random order that feebly tries to string together the many personalities of Mr. Dynamite/ Soul Brother No. 1/“the hardest-working man in show business.” One of the first scenes shows a healthy motherson relationship — snatched away by a later scene in which Brown’s mother, Susie (Viola Davis), is chased out of the family’s wood cabin by her abusive husband and Brown’s father, Joe (Lennie James). The trouble for Brown continues into his teenage years, when he is sent to the slammer for stealing a three-piece suit. He was previously dumped at his Aunt Honey’s

(Octavia Spencer) brothel but now has no place to stay and thus no hope of parole — until the lead singer of a gospel group takes him under his wing. Bobby Byrd, played by Nelsan Ellis, gives Brown and viewers hope for the star’s future. For a while the audience roots for Brown. He lands a spot as a singer in that gospel group. He transforms the band into “The Flames.” They gain the attention of King Records. But again, the idea of a happy ending is stripped away when manager Ben Bart (Dan Aykroyd) tells the boys the name has been changed from the Famous Flames to James Brown and the Famous Flames. The entire band walks out, although Byrd comes back. From then on, Brown is depicted as a lone ranger, needing no one and unafraid to sacrifice others to further his own success. Even Byrd, the one person who has stuck by his side, finally gets fed up and leaves.
Brown makes a feeble attempt to reconcile with Byrd years later, when he pulls up in his chauffeured limousine in front of Byrd’s modest suburban home, hands the old pal two tickets to that night’s concert and returns to the car. It seems Taylor realized documenting such an unlikable character without some cinematic assistance wouldn’t pull in the success he wanted, so the screenplay is littered with comedic relief. This humor succeeds in creating a delicate balance between maintaining an accurate portrayal of Brown while making the story easier to digest. Taylor does not discredit Brown and his success, and in the grand scheme of things the film does a good job of portraying the artist. After all, it’s not Taylor’s fault Brown had a tendency to be coldhearted and ruthless in his quest for fame. — Jessica Allison, entertainment writer

‘GUARDIANS OF THE GALAXY’
2:01
****
Starring: Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana, Dave Bautista, Lee Pace, Michael Rooker.
(Intense sequences of sci-fi violence and action, and for some language)
‘Guardians’ brings fun, humor to comic-book movie What a bunch of losers. That’s the most accurate way to describe the quirky, bruised main characters that inhabit Marvel’s supernaturally enjoyable “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It’s a waste of time explaining the plot for the comic-book epic, because it’s pretty wafer thin in this flick. What’s worth noting is that it’s set in space during an intergalactic political crisis, there’s an army of villains and, most importantly, it’s hilarious. I imagine I stand with the majority of moviegoers when I say a vocabulary-challenged tree, a feisty, foul-mouthed raccoon, a reddish-gray rage monster, a green ninja and a dorky guy nicknamed Star-Lord don’t land on the top 10 list of most notable superheros. Maybe not even the top 50. Groot, Rocket, Drax, Gamora and Peter Quill are more superzeros than anything, and they’re exactly why this movie is so enjoyable. They don’t need a
Page 16
August 13 - August 26, 2014
lengthy backstory or countless flashbacks to learn they’re a pack of exceptional weirdos together or alone. There’s already a ton of comic books to enrich those stories. Each Guardian doesn’t necessarily need an entire movie to set up his or her plight (like their Avengers counterparts). Instead, “Guardians of the Galaxy” smushes its protagonists together and lets their outlandish personalities do the talking. The result? A freewheeling adventure from some of the most odd, funny comic-book characters that have ever jumped from page to screen. “Guardians of the Galaxy” also has just as much, if not more, visual splendor and grandeur as 2012’s “The Avengers.” It acts like it has nothing to lose. Packed with crass jokes, a bevy of swearing and a ridiculous body count, the movie plays things loose and fast. And it employs the best use of a groovy ’70s-style sound-
track since “Reservoir Dogs.” “Guardians of the Galaxy” is a neatly curated mess of summer fun, and it’s the most fun I’ve had watching a movie in years. Kudos to the galaxy of digital artists who brought this to life and for soonto-be superstar Chris Pratt (Star-Lord) for delivering a performance as zany and funny as his character in “The Lego Movie.” There’s been enough self-serious superhero movies. Between countless heavy Batman, SpiderMan and X-Men entries, someone forgot to give the audience a chance to come up for air. Those movies have their place, but few come close to being as enjoyable as “Guardians of the Galaxy.” It’s the comic-book movie I’ve always been waiting for. Here it is, and it’s out-of-this-world good. — Nathan Poppe, entertainment writer

Veteran actor gets the blues in ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ BY GENE TRIPLETT Entertainment writer
It’s not easy being blue, but it was an out-of-this-world blast for Michael Rooker once he was in full makeup for the character he plays in the 3-D screen adaptation of Marvel Comics’ “Guardians of the Galaxy.” Directed by James Gunn, who co-wrote the screenplay with Nicole Perlman, this epic space adventure also stars Chris Pratt, Zoe Saldana and Dave Bautista. It features the voices of Vin Diesel as Groot and Bradley Cooper as Rocket (an angry, talking raccoon), and appearances by Lee Pace, Karen Gillan, Djimon Hounsou, John C. Reilly, Glenn Close as Nova Prime and Benicio Del Toro as The Collector. The movie takes the audience to a different corner of the Marvel Universe, where pilot Peter Quill (Pratt) is hunted relentlessly after stealing a mysterious orb from the villainous Ronan (Pace), who has plans that threaten an entire galaxy. Quill is forced to enlist the dubious help of a wild bunch of misfits including the gun-wielding Rocket Raccoon, a tree-like humanoid named Groot, the deadly Gamora (Saldana) and the vengeful Drax the Destroyer (Bautista). Rooker is cast as the blueskinned Yondu, surrogate father to Quill, a role written expressly for Rooker by Gunn, a longtime friend and collaborator (“Slither”). But beyond the fact that his skin is blue, Rooker refuses to disclose how his character fits into the story line. “I can’t be tellin’ you that before the movie comes out,” Rooker said with a laugh, during a phone interview from his Los Angeles home. “It’ll spoil it. It’ll spoil the whole thing.” Rooker, a veteran character

actor perhaps best known these days as Merle Dixon in the smash AMC TV series “The Walking Dead,” would only offer a few teasing hints about his role in “Guardians of the Galaxy.” “I’ll give you an idea,” he said. “The idea is, my guy plays a really significant part in this whole thing, and for me as an actor to get a chance to do this role was a complete thrill. ... To have a role written for you using ... James Gunn’s imagination ... That’s mind-blowing, dude.” The film’s press notes do reveal that Yondu is the leader of an interstellar gang of bandits called the Ravagers, who pillage all over the galaxy. Yondu also has a troubled paternal relationship with Quill, whom he raised from a small boy to manhood.
Passing the color test Rooker wouldn’t discuss any other particulars, but he was happy to talk in detail about the process of turning blue. “Dude, this is not just blue. This blue took like five, four hours, 31⁄2 hours to put on. Not one level, it’s multiple levels. It’s like three, four, five different, six different combinations of coloring to create this whole, very rich skin. I mean, it looks like skin. It looks like blue skin, man. It doesn’t look like I’ve been painted, you know? And it just simply amazes me because they did tests on a guinea pig actor, or guy. We did this in England, so before I got over there, they’re doing tests on this cat for weeks, a couple of weeks. Ordering more colors and doing more tests, more colors, more tests. “So by the time I got over
there, they were like, ‘This is the combinations we’re gonna use.’ But they had no idea what my skin was gonna do with these colors, what it was gonna do when they started putting this stuff on me. “First of all, as an actor, as a human being, I wanna know is my skin gonna breathe. They wanna know that, too. Am I gonna be able to sweat, and if I do sweat, what’s gonna happen? “So we put this stuff on, and we’re going like, ‘Well, now what? What’ll we do?’ I said, ‘Here, I got an idea.’ So I jumped out of the makeup chair and I started running. I ran up and down the stairs, ran around the block, ran around the building, up and down the stairs several times, and so I broke a real good sweat. “And lo and behold, I ran back into the makeup room,
looked in the mirror and the smiles on everybody’s faces was awesome. Because I was sweatin’ like a pig, first off. And it wasn’t running. It was staying in place, it was coming from my skin through all this paint, as if it were real skin.” The Jasper, Ala., native, 59, says it was all a labor of love, having grown up reading comics and exploring the Marvel Universe. “You know what, I know (Marvel Comics kingpin) Stan Lee, and I’ve met a few of the actors that have been in a few of the Marvel pieces, and I’m a big fan of sci-fi and fantasy and comics and stuff, and I’m thrilled,” he said. “Let me tell ya, I’m beyond thrilled to have the opportunity to hang out and be involved with a project of the caliber that ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’ is. I’m tickled.”

he guy responsible for perhaps the most iconic beer to come out of Oklahoma was doing social work at the state Department of Human Services just a few years ago. A little more than two years ago, the man who dreamed up the recipes that took this year’s Oklahoma Craft Beer Festival by storm was editing videos for a local nonprofit. And one of the state’s most well-regarded India pale ales is crafted by a person who was managing the Guitar Center in northwest Oklahoma City last year. These homebrewers-turned-professional-brewers find themselves on the leading edge of the Oklahoma craft beer movement — a movement picking up steam seemingly by the day, with new start-ups clamoring to join the fray. In fact, Oklahoma has nine brick-and-mortar breweries making full-strength beer — up from just two at the start of 2008 — with several additional brewers contracting to make their beer in-state, and a handful more in the planning stages.

PRAIRIE ARTISAN ALES
If you ask the brewers, they’ll tell you the only thing separating Oklahoma from becoming a legitimate beer destination is a key legislative tweak — a move that could open the flood gates for those already in business to become more profitable and for those who want a piece of the pie to make the leap into the professional ranks. But what about those who already made that leap? How did they get where they are? How is it that their beers are crowding old standards out of liquor store shelves and pub tap handles? Their stories are diverse, but share a common thread.

On the western outskirts of Tulsa, tucked between a shaggy, overgrown disc golf course and row after row of towering oil refinery storage tanks, sits arguably Oklahoma’s most renowned brewery. The metal building that houses Prairie Artisan Ales is not much to look at — it’s nondescript from the outside. It’s relatively small for a commercial brewery. You certainly wouldn’t guess the beer that’s made there is sought in faraway markets like Europe, Australia and South America. Despite its inauspicious facade, no brewery better illustrates the upward curve of the Oklahoma craft beer scene than Prairie. And perhaps
no brewer has grown up within the movement more than Prairie brewmaster Chase Healey. Healey got his first professional beer gig with Oklahoma City brewery COOP Ale Works, which opened for business in 2009. An avid homebrewer while in school at the University of Oklahoma, he started brewing for COOP full time before graduation — skipping his turn to walk across the stage at OU so he could focus on recipes and day-to-day operations. The relationship didn’t last. When Healey and COOP parted ways, it became the state’s first case of beer industry soap-opera drama. COOP declined to site specific reasons for the change, but rumors abounded.

“I was really immature and just not a good employee, I don’t think,” Healey said, leaning against a shiny metal table in his brewery, surrounded by towering steel brewing tanks and wooden barrels of aging beer. “I was just like a young kid that kind of was left to this brewery ... and I don’t know that I was ready for it.” He didn’t stay out of work long. He fell back on his degree and took a job at DHS. Then, a small group of investors looking to start a brewing cooperative in Oklahoma City brought Healey on as the brewer of a new label — Redbud Brewing Co. Now a moonlighting Healey started to flex his creative muscles, dreaming up recipes unlike any made in the state to that point. He poured his beer at festivals and got bottles into liquor stores. But it didn’t last. “There were a lot of mistakes in that deal,” Healey said. “But, the biggest one is that I just wasn’t all-in on it.” Healey left Redbud abruptly, heading to the Dallas area with his wife, Erica. She had sisters and a good job offer there, and Healey had lined up another brewing job — as a worker-bee-type brewer. That, too, wouldn’t last. Working for someone who “knew way less about running a brewery than I did” caused Healey to realize, “I just needed to suck it up and open a brewery. So we did.” Healey and his brother, Colin, founded Prairie in the summer of 2012. Chase provided the brewing know-how while Colin schemed the company’s off-the-wall bottle labels. They started out by

brewing their beers under a contract at Choc Beer Co. in Krebs. During his time at Redbud, Healey had cultivated a relationship with international beer distributor Shelton Bros., and he called on Shelton when he was ready to hit the market with Prairie. That move put his beer in front of consumers around the country and world — a reach far greater than any Oklahoma brewer had seen. And then came Bomb! “We brewed the first batch of Bomb! on a whim, because I just wanted to try it,” Healey said of the dark, thick stout, with its hints of coffee and vanilla beans, chili peppers and cocoa nibs. “Zach (Prichard) at Choc was like, ‘Well, this is the most expensive thing we’ve ever brewed, but just one batch, OK, no big deal.’ “It blew up,” Healey said. The brew became a national phenomenon. Craft fans from out of state would offer trades of four or five rare beers in exchange for just one 12 oz. bottle of Bomb! “Bomb! has helped grow our business in a big way,” Healey, 29, said. “We’re making big moves and probably a lot of credit is to what Bomb! has been able to do for our brewery.” The moves included securing his own brewery building in west Tulsa, where he brews anywhere from 15 to 25 percent of Prairie’s beer — the rest is still made at Choc. And he acquired land in Glenpool that will become Prairie Farm. It’s Healey’s vision of a massive brewery expansion combined with a tourist destination and functioning farm.

I had a hard time accepting that at first, that I couldn’t just make it all about me. We’re changing and maturing, I suppose.” The early struggles — and the arrival of his son, Denver, this summer — have seemed to ground Healey. “There was a point where I was really struggling and wasn’t sure that I should stay in brewing,” he said. “I try not to forget that part. (There’s) the highest of highs and the lowest of lows, and I could screw it all up again still.”

If you’re a homebrewer trying to break into the professional craft beer scene, nearly crushing someone with 500 pounds of grain on one of your first commercial brew days is a bad first step. Making beer that tastes like bologna is a close second in the bad-step pantheon. Having to toss out an entire batch of beer that you just spent a miserable 18 hours trying to make? Maybe it’s time to consider a new line of work. That’s what weighed on Matt Anthony’s mind late one night in May 2012. “I was just lying in bed thinking, ‘I’ve made the biggest mistake of my life,’” Anthony said. Less than a week before, Anthony took his passion for homebrewing and left his job of almost 11 years at Feed the Children — where he edited video and worked on motion graphics for the nonprofit — to start up Anthem Brewing Co.

He found himself in the brewhouse at the OK City Brewing Cooperative, trying to make a leap from the size of batches you can brew on your stove top to those that require hundreds of pounds of ingredients. “Right from the jump, loading in the hopper on the mill, the whole mill on the hopper dumped over, almost killing — I forget who it was helping mill — but it was like 500 pounds of grain. It would have just completely killed him.” If that weren’t enough, as the beer was fermenting, the unit that regulates its temperature broke down. “Kinda cooked some of the yeast,” Anthony said. “When you taste it and it tastes like bologna, I said, ‘No, I can’t send this out.’” Fast forward to this July. Anthony, 35, sits in his office at his spacious brewery in the Farmers Market District just southwest of downtown Oklahoma City. His business survived that early disastrous batch. It survived the May 31, 2013, storm that wrecked the OK City Brewing Cooperative and left him without a place to brew for several months. “Thankfully my wife is really, really awesome and she’s got a really good job, too,” he said. “She was infinitely patient. That helped us. That’s the only way we survived.” He’s survived and thrived. His successful launch this summer of three canned offerings — Golden One Belgian ale, Arjuna wit bier and Uroboros stout — has him eying future expansion.

At the annual Oklahoma Craft Beer Festival in May, he turned out 20 different beers that he poured to rave reviews. It’s a far cry from those first few frenzied days at the brewhouse. “I can laugh about it now,” he said. “I didn’t laugh about it then.” Anthony said he feels that not only has he grown up in his beer knowledge, Oklahoma has as well. He describes the change in the state’s craft beer scene from five years ago to today as “night and day.” “Five years ago you’d have been hardpressed to walk in and get a local craft beer anywhere — let alone five or six different breweries,” he said. To move the state even further forward, Anthony and other brewers recommend a seemingly simple amendment to Oklahoma law: Allow brewers to sell beer by the pint at their breweries. “It’s so frustrating,” he said. “You go to every other state and you see these breweries that are doing really, really well. And they don’t even have wide distribution. Having your own tap room really helps the business out.” In the meantime, Anthony is riding the momentum his Belgian-inspired beers have created. “It’s happened really fast, and I’m extremely grateful for my partners and my investors,” he said. “Without them, this wouldn’t be here. The tornado would have come and that would have been it.”

It was Guitar Center that took Tielli — the brewmaster and co-founder of Roughtail Brewing Co. — from his home of Mansfield, Texas, to Fayetteville, Ark., where he was asked to run a store. And a little more than a year later it was Guitar Center that relocated Tielli to manage the Oklahoma City branch on N May Avenue. For the up-and-coming homebrewer, “It was kind of the perfect-storm scenario.” “I had this job where I was kind of in charge of everybody at the store, so I wasn’t really friends with any of them outside of business,” Tielli said. “I didn’t know anybody else in town, and I had all this space at the house we were renting. “So that’s when I decided, I’ve got room, I can kind of dig into this homebrewing thing.” So he dug in. Around 2008, Tielli “started getting really intense” about his homebrewing. He got into the competition scene, started bringing home awards and commenced a heavy education in the art of brewing.

A little more than a year later, their beers are available in cans and bottles at state liquor stores and on tap at numerous pubs and restaurants. Getting to that point wasn’t easy, though.
Tielli recalls the stress of his first commercial batch, knowing he was operating on a razor-thin margin. “During those early days ... we were going to zero in the bank account like pretty much all the time,” he said, sitting at a giant wooden spool-turned table in the tasting room at his brewery. “There was no margin for error.” Add to that the hardship of selling your beer when nobody knows your name.

“In April of 2013, walking into a bar or a liquor store, they were like, ‘Who in the hell are you?’” Tielli said. “It was really, really tough. I’m thankful for some of the early adopters, the guys that came on in the beginning and gave us a chance.” Like Anthony, Tielli sees increased success hinging on legislative change. “Breweries have to be able to sell on-premise,” he said. “It’s completely insane that that’s illegal. “That one rule changing suddenly makes it — I don’t want to say easy — but it makes it less incredibly difficult to turn a profit in this business.” Tielli said he feels that one change could trigger a flood of new breweries in the state. In that scenario, he envisions a state with as many as 50 brewers banded together, making a united push for improvements to Oklahoma’s alcohol laws. Faced with the legislative hurdles that exist now, Tielli, 30, said he thinks the industry hasn’t come as far as it could. But it has still made strides. “I think that the industry as a whole is going to continue moving forward,” he said. “There’s enough people out there that want good, quality craft beer. And there’s enough of us that want to make it. So we’re going to move forward, period. “We’re going to find a way.”

Q: WHAT KIND OF CHANGES HAVE YOU NOTICED AT YOUR BAR SPECIFICALLY?
Greg Powell has been general manager at TapWerks Ale House for four years, and served in the same position at Bricktown Brewery for three years before that. Powell is the founder and organizer of the annual Oklahoma Craft Beer Festival. He has had a front-row seat for the development of Oklahoma’s craft beer scene. Powell took part in a Q&A for LOOKatOKC: Greg Powell. The Oklahoman Archives
Q: HOW FAR DO YOU THINK THE STATE’S CRAFT BEER SCENE HAS COME IN THE PAST FIVE OR SIX YEARS? GREG POWELL: Oklahoma, like a lot of states, has seen major growth in craft beer in the last five or six years. Back then it was pretty much just Choc and Huebert as the only production

breweries in the state. Now, I think our count is closer to 12, with a few more in planning. What’s even more exciting is that the good people of Oklahoma have proven that they want craft beer. Six years ago anyone wanting to spend the money to build a craft brewery in Oklahoma would have had their sanity questioned. “Just gives us our Bud
Light in a frozen mug and leave us alone.” Now, I sell more F5 IPA than any other beer at TapWerks. That alone speaks volumes. Besides that, the beers our brewers are making are fantastic. Marshall, Roughtail, Anthem, Choc, Prairie (and the list goes on), they all have great beers in their portfolio, and they add to it every year.
POWELL: The biggest change I have seen at TapWerks is the willingness of our guests to try anything. What makes craft beer drinkers great is that they rarely have the same beer twice in one sitting. They want an IPA, then a saison, then stout, and back to an IPA, and all from different breweries. That’s why we try to represent as many styles as possible, because these days, someone will ask for it. Q: WHERE DO YOU SEE THINGS GOING IN THE NEXT FIVE YEARS?
O K L A H O M A
POWELL: In the next five years I see our selection continuing to lean more local-heavy. As more local breweries open, and our current ones expand their offerings, they will continue to gain tap space over some of the old guard macro stuff that isn’t up to par. We will always give the people what they want, and local craft beer is where we see the most growth. As a beer lover and bar operator it is a win-win. I get to put the freshest, besttasting beers on tap that I want to drink, and the guy sitting on the other side of the bar couldn’t be happier about it.
