Sweet Christmas. I’ve already started looping Vince Guaraldi Trio. That must mean it’s officially the holidays in Oklahoma City. Igloo shops are popping up, all of Automobile Alley looks like Clark and Ellen Griswold’s rooftop and the movies are getting sadder. I’m totally all right

with all three of those things because December makes my addiction to Braum’s peppermint ice cream seem more festive than sad and sweatpants become less frowned upon in public. It’s really hard for me to believe you’re holding the second to last LOOKatOKC issue of the year. We’ve made more than two dozen issues in 2016, and this one is the furriest one yet. The LICKatOKC hashtag is my favorite because it started as a ridiculous pun and ended up being a goofy reality. A special thanks to Tiffany Gibson for helping gather all the entries to the contest. Remember, you can tag photos of your pets all year on Instagram with the LOOKatOKC hashtag. Or not, and your pet will never get internet famous. That’s on you. I’m going to leave you

on one more festive note. On Dec. 2, I was asked to make a Midnight Toast at Ludivine. The bar was full of friends and strangers. I was told my toast went well, but I don’t remember doing it. However, video evidence of the moment emerged, and I’d like to share the transcript. Glasses up.

Don’t get hung up on last November Before you know it, it’ll be next December We can only go through this world one day at a time This toast is to an Oklahoma night, an Oklahoma bender Never give up, never surrender I’ve yet to hear from any lawyers or “Galaxy Quest” representatives so I’d call that a roaring success. See you again at the end of the year.

Event center proposed for Bricktown Canal property BY STEVE LACKMEYER For LOOKatOKC

A 70-year-old derelict building along the Bricktown Canal, empty since 2002, is set to undergo a $10 million transformation into an event center and sandwich shop. The Falls Event Center LLC started in Utah five years ago and has since grown to eight locations with Bricktown being one of several new locations being planned. John Neubauer, corporate general manager with Falls Event Centers, said the company has a purchase contract for 108 E California Ave., and construction could start by next summer pending approval by the Bricktown Urban Design Committee. Plans call for addition of a third floor and a waterfall that will flow at the building’s canal level. The east-facing wall that adjoins the Brickopolis miniature golf course would be redone with a new brick facade and window openings. “We’re an event center, but we’re a venue only,” Neubauer said. “It’s for businesses, nonprofits and families seeking places to do events. Guests do their own catering, alcohol and event planning. Our niche is we provide a country club environment for a ‘Target’ price.” The development also will include an “Even Stevens” sandwich shop, which along with the Falls Event Centers was started by Utah entrepreneur Steve Down. The shops, started in 2014, donate sandwiches to a local nonprofit that feeds the hungry. As of July, the

chain gave away 500,000 sandwiches. The two-story building originally was home to a paper company but was empty for several years before it was briefly leased to a nightclub after the opening of the canal in 1999. The first presentation of the project will be at the Dec. 14 Bricktown Urban Design Committee meeting, with an application for plan approval in January. Neubauer said discussions have been ongoing with the city’s parks department about adding the waterfall and with Mallory O’Neill, Bricktown Association program manager, about ensuring the venue is a good fit with the district. “We want to rebrick the side wall — it’s such an ugly view for people who come into the area,” Neubauer said. “We will put some really nice artwork on the wall in coordination with Mallory and the Bricktown Association.” Because the event center allows customers to choose their own catering, Neubauer expects the venue will benefit Bricktown area restaurants. O’Neill is excited to see the project come to fruition. “This event space and restaurant concept is the perfect addition to the canal,” O’Neill said. “Seeing this building active and thriving is the end goal for the district and we are confident that The Falls will do so. They have already proven how invested in the community they will be. We are very excited to have them call Bricktown home.”

LINCOLN PLAZA

Lincoln Plaza started with ambitions to top Dallas BY STEVE LACKMEYER For LOOKatOKC

T

he Lincoln Office Plaza, announced in 1967, was to be no ordinary office complex. Led by John Lewis, president of First Fidelity Corp., the 24-acre project was to include a hotel, trade mart and ample underground parking. Lewis estimated the development along Lincoln Boulevard at NE 42 would cost $15 million. Everything was to be “ultramodern” — including computers devoted to oil companies. Lewis proclaimed a trade mart at the complex would put Oklahoma City in competition with Dallas as a wholesale shipping hub. “There will be a lot of consolidation here of offices from all over the country because of the efficiencies made possible by this location and facilities,” Lewis said. “That’s the reason we’ve got to get going in a hurry.” Delbert Cravens, president of the Northeast Chamber of Commerce, was an enthusiastic supporter. “This is the kind of project we’ve been looking for to kick off the inevitable development of the east side of Oklahoma City and complement the development of the medical center and State Capitol complex,” Cravens said in anticipation of the project’s completion. The trade mart idea had already faded from the headlines when the complex opened with a Quality Inn banner on July 15, 1970. The hotel featured 312 rooms, a dinner theater with a rotating stage, a 14,000-squarefoot ballroom, and 17 meeting rooms.

At a time when downtown’s aging hotels were either going bankrupt or being torn down by Urban Renewal, the Lincoln Plaza offered modern accommodations, ample meeting space and free parking. Throughout the 1970s, the Lincoln Plaza remained a top destination for travelers, politicians, executives and couples seeking a fun night at its dinner theater. In 1984, the hotel was sold for $20 million. But trouble was looming. The collapse of Penn Square Bank had triggered an economic depression throughout the

state, and Lincoln Boulevard itself was beginning to look shabby. Aging motels along Lincoln Boulevard, no longer attracting cross-country travelers, became havens for prostitutes and drug dealers. The strip’s reputation suffered. The property frequently changed hands throughout the late 1980s and early 1990s. Owners in 1991 promised an overhaul, and managed to bring in new furniture bought at auctions of the closed Heritage USA. That plan ended with a foreclosure in 1993. More promised comebacks followed. Another set of owners in 1998 promised a sweeping overhaul that would rebrand the hotel as a Ramada and feature a theme restaurant owned by legendary football coach Jimmy Johnson. The Ramada banner didn’t stay up for long. The hotel tower closed. The restaurant closed after 18 months. In August 2006, local developer Tom Parrish bought the three-story and six-story hotel buildings and drew up plans to bring them back as a modern hotel conference center. A downturn in the national economy helped kill Parrish’s vision and the property went into receivership and was then bought by Richard Tanenbaum. The office park, separately owned at the time, was filled with state agencies, but it too went empty and ended up in receivership. With Tanebaum’s purchase of the office park, the one-time landmark is positioned to come back to life. But it’s days as a hotel and destination for the state’s political power brokers is unlikely to ever return.

The emphasis on historic art is changing in Bricktown PAGE 10

DECEMBER 15–28, 2016

he very first mural in Bricktown disappeared more than 25 years ago, but like most art in the district, it was decidedly tilted toward showing off the area’s history. It was 1982 and Neal Horton was just a couple of years into his redevelopment of the forgotten collection of decadesold brick warehouses just east of the Central Business District. Horton saw art as a means to generate interest in the district, which he envisioned as an old town destination with restaurants, shops, condominiums, offices and a bed-and-breakfast.

Horton spent six months planning the mural with art students and professionals at Oklahoma City University. The first mural, displayed at Walnut and Sheridan Avenues, depicted the Armstrong Hardware Co., one of the early firms to locate in the old Military addition, where U.S. Army troops camped to keep order after the 1889 Land Run. The mural showed an elderly man and woman, dressed in their 1910 best, about to enter Armstrong's door. The “mega-mural” was assembled as a series of plywood panels, each four feet wide and eight feet tall, individually painted. Two rows of panels shaped the SEE MURALS, 12

ART SPEAKS

MURALS CONTINUED FROM 10L mural, making it eight feet tall. Over the next three decades, public art in Bricktown would follow the precedent set by Horton — historic themes, nothing too abstract and funky. Such rules were even added into the district’s design ordinances. Those rules were lifted earlier this year, and very first game changer is artist Jack Fowler, who is wrapping up work on the “Bricktown Octopus.” The octopus is colorful, huge and it has nothing to do with state, city or Bricktown history. Spanning a 5,000-square-foot alley side wall of the Chevy Bricktown Entertainment Center, the mural was commissioned by the property owners, Brent and Brett Brewer and Downtown Initiatives, a nonprofit operated by Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. List me as someone who was a skeptic when this project was first launched. But as it nears completion, I get it. This is a mural that will become a photo spot, a total celebration of nonsense in a world that desperately needs to be cheered up by colorful silliness. The game changers in the Bricktown art scene can be found at Downtown Oklahoma City Inc. They also commissioned murals along the Reno and Sheridan Avenues underpasses at the BNSF Railway viaduct that were a reflection of our city's American Indian heritage — but far more abstract in nature than what we've seen previously. More art is planned. Amanda Bradway is set to present plans next month to the Bricktown Design Review Committee for a mural light board that will be displayed along a wall under the Oklahoma Avenue bridge over the Bricktown Canal. Bricktown program manager Mallory O’Neill, meanwhile, is working with property owners along the canal for at least one more art project, and a mural also will be added along the final BNSF viaduct entry into Bricktown at Main Street. We can expect this new wave of public art in Bricktown to continue to be a departure from works done in past years showing a timeline history of the state, a long old west train filled with celebrity passengers, a large vintage style downtown post card mural, and works at the ballpark depicting Bricktown’s industrial past. It’s a changing theme for the state’s premier urban entertainment district. The art reflects a new direction for Bricktown — one that remains popular with tourists and late-night club crowds, but also one that is set to be far more local with the addition of hundreds of residents and an influx of more locally focused restaurants and shops. Neal Horton understood the importance of public art in place-making back in 1982. And while the murals are different, the intent of using art to add to a visitor’s experience remains intact.

Hitting the right notes OKC Orchestra League’s Instrument Playground lets children try their hands at classical music-making BY BRANDY MCDONNELL For LOOKatOKC

mid the jangle of tambourines, bleating of horns and chattering of eager aspiring musicians, Cassie Cackler smiled as she coaxed a lilting note out of a flute on her first attempt. “I think it’s really fun,” she said as she moved on to give the cello a try. Cassie, a 10-year-old student from Heritage Elementary in Edmond, was among about 40 Junior Girl Scouts and Brownies who recently played their way through the Oklahoma City Orchestra League’s Instrument Playground. The hands-on program allows children to explore several instruments featured in the four sections of a symphony orchestra. “They can pick up a French horn and learn how to play it. They can pick up a trombone and learn how

to play it. A violin, a cello — well, they won’t want to pick up the cello necessarily,” Orchestra League member Joan Bryant said with a laugh. “They are able to try out the instruments … which introduces them and lets them know this might be something that they might like to do.”

get a chance to see an instrument up close and to really just touch it and feel it.” Founded in 1948 as a support organization for the Oklahoma City Philharmonic, Bryant said the Orchestra League started hosting competitions for advanced student musicians in 1958. Its SEE ORCHESTRA, 15

educational programs have evolved and expanded over the decades. “The mission of the Oklahoma City Orchestra League is to educate, enrich and inspire the community by supporting orchestral music and volunteerism, so this is one of the ways that we do this,” she said. “It’s like a best-kept secret, the education that the Orchestra League does. Because everybody thinks about the Orchestra League and they think, ‘Oh, they do the (Symphony) Show House’ — which we do, which raises funds. But we go all over the state with the Instrument Playground.” The Instrument Playground’s most regular gig involves warming up the crowds for the Philharmonic’s Discovery Family Series concerts. The next Instrument Playground is planned for Jan. 29 before the OKC Philharmonic’s funky performance with Oklahoma City kindie rock duo the Sugar Free Allstars.

INSPIRING EFFORTS The Orchestra League also partners with other nonprofit organizations, schools and events to take its interactive instrument collection to children around the state. As public schools cut music education programs due to funding constraints, Bryant said such outreach efforts are more vital than ever. The Instrument Playground recently has appeared at the Oklahoma State Fair, the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Honor the Child festivities in Anadarko and the Down Syndrome Association of Central Oklahoma’s Buddy Walk at the Chickasaw Bricktown Ballpark. Wherever it goes, Bryant said it’s thrilling to see children experience the joy of music — and occasionally hear stories of students taking the experience out of the playground. “There was this young girl who picked up a violin, and she obviously knew how to finger it and she knew how to play it. And I talked to her mother, and a few years ago, she had been to the Buddy Walk — she comes every year — and she

was introduced to the violin. And she fell in love with it and she has been taking lessons ever since,” Bryant said. “It’s just inspiring.” Cera Perez, Junior Troop Support Specialist with Girl Scouts Western Oklahoma, said the hands-on nature of the Instrument Playground complements the Girl Scout philosophy. The Orchestra League partnered this month with the OKC Philharmonic, Allied Arts and OK City Chorus for Journeys in Harmony, an interactive event that gives Junior Girl Scouts a chance to earn their musician merit badge. “It allows them to … learn by doing. Since Girl Scouts talks a lot about girlled, this is a way for them to be girl-led in a sense of ‘Hey, I’m gonna touch this instrument and I’m gonna be able to know I can do this,’ ” Perez said. “I’m glad that they were able to let them actually touch those things, especially like those cellos … because that’s exciting. I was like, ‘You’re gonna let them play with that?’ And they were like, ‘Yeah, let’s go.’ So, they’ve been awesome.”

JOYFUL NOISE At the percussion table, Junior Girl Scout Kate Clark, 10, flexed and bent her thumb and index finger to clang together the tiny finger cymbals often used by belly dancers. Although she had seen the finger cymbals, maracas and triangle at school, the Will Rogers Elementary student was surprised by one instrument amid the beat-keeping noisemakers. “One of the things that I didn’t know existed was the little spoon clappers,” she said. “I thought you were supposed to, like, clap those together and like move them. But you actually hit them against the side of your leg. It’s cool. … I actually had seen them once, but I thought they were just, like, two spoons. I didn’t know that they actually have a handle.” Along with experimenting with the spoons, Kate also was excited to try out the French horn. “I like the brass. I like the sound and how it’s, like, loud. I like making loud noises,” she said with a grin. “We’re good at loud noises,” said Orchestra League volunteer Cheryl Hudak. “We make a joyful noise.”

DOUBLEVEE

DoubleVee gets

PAGE 16

DECEMBER 15–28, 2016

There’s barely a moment of doubleVee’s origin story that wasn’t soundtracked. Former Starlight Mints frontman Allan Vest and Barb Vest comprise the Oklahoma City-based band, and the duo met through a series of Okie concerts and conversations about music. The couple bonded when Allan played her Ennio Morricone’s evocative theme from the 1969 crime film “The Sicilian Clan” in a makeshift studio. They’d marry five years later in October 2015 with the same song kicking off the ceremony. All cuteness aside, the Vests have completed a full-length album of original music under the moniker doubleVee. The soon to be self-released effort is called “The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider.” It won’t land until Feb. 10, but you can pass the time with the band’s digital PledgeMusic campaign. The pre-order campaign ends Dec. 27. I caught up with the pair and asked about the new song, the album’s mysterious central character, performing this material live and more. Q: What can you tell me about the album’s title character, Jack? Where did he come from and what made him a driving force for the record?

Allan Vest: “Jack the Rider” was the first of three songs we initially created together. We just stumbled on the character while working on the song one day. We knew there would be a repeating line with certain phonetics, and poof, he was born. Barb spearheaded creating an underlying storyline while we began working on the other songs and we started to approach the album as more of a theatrical piece, with Jack at the handlebars. He’s a traveler who descends into a world reminiscent of “The Twilight Zone” where nothing is exactly as it seems. I think for the listener, the album is a puzzle; as for us, we know how we see some of the pieces fit, but we like for our songs to be open for interpretation by the listener. Q: You guys have been working on this material for a while. How long has the process been and how does it feel to be so close to a release? Barb Vest: When we first started working on the songs, we didn’t have an album in mind, but knew we enjoyed working on music together and wanted to get our songs out there one way or another. We digitally selfreleased three songs in October and November of 2013, and as we continued creating we knew we wanted to SEE Q&A, 17

Q&A CONTINUED FROM 16 finish a full album. It was important to us to do quality work and have it professionally distributed and promoted, with an actual physical CD and plans to release it on vinyl in the future if we can swing it. We’re very excited to be on the verge of releasing the album after pouring so much of ourselves into it. Q: Did Allan handle the instrumentation on this? I’d also be curious to hear how he feels this project differs from work with Starlight Mints? Allan Vest: I did play and program most of the instruments as I did with the majority of the Starlight Mints records. We had the very talented trumpet player Kevin Stringfellow come in and record some brass parts on three songs. Barb, having played piano and sung since she was a child and having worked with audio production programs during her time in public radio, has been picking up learning more of the software side of things, playing some virtual instruments and

LOOKATOKC.COM

learning several of the sampler-based programs we work with including Reason, Play and Kontakt. I think the project is somewhat similar musically to the Starlight Mints but quite different lyrically and with a more prominent female voice in Barb. Looking back, I think every Starlight Mints record had its own vibe and progression with songs ranging from being playful to emotional to simple to sometimes heavily orchestrated. Although there is a bit of orchestration and sound effects on this debut album, it feels pure to me musically, and lyrically haunting and full of metaphors. Q: What prompted Allan to build a home studio? Has that made the production process a lot easier and convenient? Allan Vest: I’ve had a micro studio of one sort or another for several years, but I’d never had a space with any proper sound treatment and a controlled listening environment. Barb’s dad and I built over a dozen bass traps and cut my nine foot work table in half (then carefully put it back together) when it wouldn’t quite fit through the house. Barb and I have been slowly making improvements to the studio since then, purchasing

sets of industry standard speakers, microphones and software and making the most of the space. It does make the production process a lot simpler and more convenient, considering we can work in the studio anytime day or night and not have to worry about paying any rental rates. Q: The songs on “The Moonlit Fables of Jack the Rider” feel very theatrical. I’m curious what a live show would look or feel like. Do you guys have anything in mind for that? Barb Vest: We love hearing that our music has a theatrical or cinematic feel to it and have sketched out plans for what live performances of the album would look like, with stage sets, a plot line, and visual and special effects elements. We would add a member or two for the live band version of doubleVee. We’ll accelerate those plans once we see how our PledgeMusic campaign to help fund the release goes, and we are hopeful that a successful campaign really propels the next steps. Q: How has being a couple affected the creative process? Was it always a fit for you to work together on music?

Allan Vest: Barb and I have always been in sync musically, randomly singing improv songs, with each of us bringing different musical tastes and backgrounds to the table. Our first song together was a cover we did as a holiday gift for family. We enjoyed the interplay between our voices and harmonizing together and started recording original material not long afterward. It’s been a good fit, since we really feed off each other’s ideas as our songs start coming together, working out melodies and harmonies and sketching out the lyrics. I’ve been composing music since I was a teenager, so having gotten to this point and getting to create songs with my wife has been a really special turn of events.

TRACK DEBUT You can also check out an exclusive debut of the doubleVee single “Dangerous World” on NewsOK.com/blogs/ middleofnowhere. Think of it as a theatrical return to form for Allan Vest whose arrangements have always tickled pop sensibilities with a lush, orchestrated flair and a chance to hear Barb Vest hold her own with harmonious vocals and electronic flourishes.

He is big teddy bear that loves to lay on the couch and be on my lap. Coco is 4 years old, and my wife Ashlea, brought her home as a puppy. Even though she is only seven pounds, Coco thinks she is the biggest dog around. They make a pretty good pair and love to play together.

Ben Abraham, @benabraham My best friend in the fourth grade had two gorgeous huskies. I pestered my parents ever since then to get one and about seven years ago we found the perfect one and were able to adopt him. This is my dog, Aspen. He is a purebred Siberian Husky. He is the joy of our family and full of energy, especially in the cold months. Aspen loves on every person he meets. He has brought our family closer together and always let’s us know when any argument annoys him by utilizing his beautiful howl. We are so blessed to have him, and we thank God for bringing him into our lives.

Emily il Ifill, fill @emilyifill il ifill In 2012, Pirrow was found wandering my neighborhood at 3 months old. The long-hair miniature Dachshund was covered head to toe with 20 ticks, and I removed every one of those suckers. We put up “lost dog” fliers for a week and a half, and after no one came for him, I claimed him as mine. I mean, how can you say no to such a cute face like his?

Naoma Serna, @naoserna Her name is Prairie. My vet said she is a mix of Norwich Terrier and Corgi. My fiancé and I adopted her a month after I graduated from UCO. We found her on the Nextdoor neighborhood community app when one of my neighbors had caught her running onto the on-ramp of I-235 and 36th. My neighbor tried to find the owners but she seemed to be severely abused. She couldn’t keep Prairie and was looking for the perfect people to adopt her. Prairie has been spoiled ever since and takes up most of the bed, but she deserves it.

Leah Nelson, @leahn19 This is L.D. He is a 7-year-old Maine Coon and Domestic Longhair mix. We adopted him in 2010 after the loss of our first cat. He likes to talk to birds, sing cat songs in the middle of the night and be carried around like a baby. He also steals my hair ties and keeps them under the refrigerator in case I need them for later. He has a great personality.

Mena Ganesan, @liliotis74 This is my Shih Tzu and Yorkie mix mutt, Darby. He is almost 3 years old. After my beloved dog died of old age back in 2014, my friend brought this little ball of fur to my home in hopes of helping me through the grieving process. When Darby came to live with me, he was a scared, shy little 3-month-old pup. Now he is a rambunctious, playful boy who loves every human, dog and cat he meets. He loves toys and hates to eat vegetables. He’s never met a ball that he can’t fetch. He is my favorite little cuddlebug.

Sheryl Salisbury, @sherylsalisbury We named her after a Willow tree because she’s about the same color as its bark. When she is practicing hunting, she disappears among the tree bark. My husband is an avid quail hunter and the Weimaraner makes great pointers and retrievers. We love this breed for their hunting ability as well as their loving disposition. We bought Willow from a couple in Amorita. She’s just a puppy (about 6 months in this picture) and a love dove that’s for sure.

@okmort Oliver was adopted from a possible puppy mill as a scrawny little mutt. Now, he’s a handsome mixed breed who loves watching for squirrels out the window. We pretend he’s a new breed, a 16 pound Micro-Labrador.

Teresa Randall, @terrierteacher Bodie was confiscated from a puppy mill eight years ago and came to me as a rescue dog. He brings, or creates, happiness everywhere he goes with his infectious Terrier attitude.

@abel_bird Abel is a 4-year-old French Bulldog. I adopted him from a lady off of Craigslist. He brings so much joy to everyone he meets and has more personality than we can handle sometimes. He loves car rides, naps, and wrestling with his pug sister, Birdie.

@hayemargo argo The Dude. He’s a rescue from the local organization, All 4 One Rescue. We actually signed up to foster him and his sister but fell in love on our first day together and decided to adopt them both. He is about 2 years old and is a Pomeranian mix.

Holly Jones, @narwhalthepoom Our dog, Narwhal, is a 10-years-young Pomeranian. We adopted her and her brother on July 4 of last year from All 4 One Rescue, a local small breed and senior dog rescue organization. Narwhal is always smiling and enjoys checking out her plants in the garden, playing with her brothers and sister, enjoys being a shop dog at STASH and always posing for photos.

Rachel Bohanan, @rachelkb04, My husband Isaac and I adopted Izzy when we were engaged to be married in 2012. Izzy is a little bundle of joy to our marriage. She is playful, smart, loving and constantly makes us laugh. When we are having a bad day, a marital argument or feeling sick, Izzy is there to lighten the mood and cheer us up. She reminds us to laugh every day, and let go of the little things that don’t matter. Izzy loves wearing clothes, eating green beans, sleeping in our bed, riding in the car and taking walks.

@sneakysadventures Sneaky is a Snowshoe Siamese that came into our lives eight years ago. On a cool evening in June, we found him under the hood of one of our cars parked in the driveway. He was a kitten of about 8 weeks, I suppose. At first he was very sneaky and timid around us.

That’s how he got his name. Little by little, he warmed up to us until we made him ours, or should I say he made us his and the rest is history. He is a very energetic cat but veryy lovable and sweet at the same time.

Mary Frantz, @momfrantz_fx During a search for two Christmas kitties, we aimed to find an orange one and a Calico one. In the middle of a blizzard, we met a woman who had both. Ginger was the Calico kitty we got that week of Christmas nine years ago. Ginger manages the house, keeps track of each of us, and lets us know when we’re off our schedule. She’s feisty but lovable. Persnickety but cuddly. She’s the absolute queen of our house.

puppy, it’s not a bad time to pop into the adoption center.” The Oklahoma City Animal Welfare also has animals available for adoption almost daily and all of their adoptable pets have been spayed or neutered, have had their shots and have been treated for worms. They’re located in south Oklahoma City at 2811 SE 29th St. They’re also running Feline Navidad and Hounds for the Holiday specials where you can adopt a puppy or kitten for $30 between Dec. 14-23. Adult cats are free. Animal Welfare Superindent Jonathan Gary also visited NewsOK’s video studio recently. He shared that his co-workers will be staying up until midnight on Dec. 23 to try to get every animal adopted. “December is always a big month for us, and this year we’re very close to reaching 75 percent live release rate goal,” Gary said in-studio. “... That just means 75 percent of all animals that come into the shelter go out alive. We’ve made a lot of progress towards that goal. Last year we ended just over 70 percent.” Up north in Edmond, the volunteer-based Pet Angels Adoption

Center is expanding to a 4,000-plus square foot facility. It’s estimated to be finished in spring 2017 and the rescue organization is accepting donations for all sorts of supplies via contact@petangelsrescue.org. Dana Huckaby, executive director of Pet Angels Rescue, said she’s hoping for increased adoptions because the new building will make it easier for the public to view available pets versus the handful they bring to adoption events. Also, she’s looking forward to increased volunteer programs and community service options. “Winters are tough,” Huckaby shared via email. “We have to reduce the numbers of animals we can take in. Sadly, around holidays, many animals get returned. Also, adoptions do slow down because people don’t want to adopt when they will be traveling. ... We house about 75 dogs at any given time, often more, but in the winter we try to get the number in the 50 range.” As you can see, there are plenty of ways to reach out to the pet community. There’s no wrong way to LICKatOKC.

Nina Wroblewski, @kitty_rancher I have a lot of feral cats that I feed on my property. I found Pugsly, pictured, and his sister abandoned on my back patio. I took them in, bottle fed them until they could eat on their own and they became a part of the he family.

“Kids write letters to Santa Claus. It doesn’t mean they’re crazy,” observes one of the characters in “Collateral Beauty.” He’s defending a friend, Howard Inlet (Will Smith), who has just suffered a tragic loss and has taken to writing letters to love, time and death. To his surprise, these three facts of life begin appearing to him in human form (Keira Knightley, Jacob Latimore and Helen Mirren, respectively) to answer his desperate questions about the meaning of existence. This drama from writer Allan Loeb and director David Frankel also stars Kate Winslet, Edward Norton and Michael Pena.

Remember when musicals ruled Hollywood’s cinematic output? “La La Land” does. Along with “Whiplash” director and writer Damien Chazelle, who lovingly revisits the genre with the story of an aspiring actress (Emma Stone) and a dedicated jazz musician (Ryan Gosling). The two fall in love after a handful of chance encounters in Los Angeles and share more than a few charming music and dance numbers.

He is forced to participate in an experiment and relive the memories of ancestor Aguilar de Nerha (also played by Fassbender), an assassin during the Spanish Inquisition. Expect a riveting performance from Natalie Portman as she portrays the iconic first lady.

Bryan Cranston starts breaking bad as an outraged, overprotective dad when he meets his future son-in-law (James Franco), a tattoo-covered, socially unhousebroken Silicon Valley billionaire who’s wellmeaning but unintentionally shocking to his future in-laws in “Why Him?,” a comedy from writer-director John Hamburg (“I Love You, Man”) and co-writer Jonah Hill. Also starring Zoey Deutch and former Oklahoma City resident Megan Mullally.

Inspired by a true story, “Gold” charts the exploits of an unlikely pair of treasure hunters as they venture into the deepest Indonesian jungle in search of riches. Matthew McConaughey plays a down-on-hisluck soldier of fortune who teams with an eager geologist in search of hidden gold, a quest that leads them from the steamy Asian jungles into the most powerful boardrooms of Wall Street. Ben Affleck takes on triple duty as screenwriter, director and star of “Live By Night,” the action-packed adaptation of Dennis Lehane’s novel set in Prohibition-era Boston. Joe Coughlin (Affleck), the son of a Boston police captain, rises from petty thief to cohort of the city’s most fearsome mobsters. But life on the dark side carries a heavy price as Joe wallows in ill-gotten riches but always skates on the edge of doom. Cast also features Zoe Saldana, Elle Fanning, Sienna Miller and Brendan Gleeson.

Santa Barbara, California, in the boisterous 1970s, an era of social change and rebellion, provides the backdrop for “20th Century Women,” a pithy comedy-drama from writer-director Mike Mills (“Beginners”). Dorothea Fields (Annette Bening) is a determined, middle-aged single mom raising an adolescent son in a turbulent time. To get by, she enlists the aid of two younger women — Abbie (Greta Gerwig), a free-spirited punk artist, and Julie (Elle Fanning), a smart, provocative teenage neighbor.

JAN. 6 Martin Scorsese directs the historical drama “Silence,” which stars Andrew Garfield and Adam Drive as two 17thcentury priests who face violence, persecution and the ultimate test of their faith when they travel to Japan in search of their missing mentor (Liam Neeson) at a time when Christianity was forbidden.

JAN. 20 Director Chris Wedge (“Ice Age and the Oscarwinning short “Bunny”) takes on his first live-action movie with “Monster Trucks,” a CGI-driven adventure about a boy and his pet truck. Tripp (Lucas Till) is a small-town high school senior who builds a monster truck from parts of old scrapped cars. But an accident at a nearby oil rig unearths a strange subterranean being that takes up residence in Till’s truck and becomes his unlikely pal and ally in a battle to shake off the shackles of his small-town life.

Co-writer Peter Berg (“Lone Survivor,” “Deepwater Horizon”) directs Mark Wahlberg, Melissa Benoist, Michelle Monaghan, J.K. Simmons, Kevin Bacon and John Goodman in “Patriot’s Day,” a dramatization of Boston Police Commissioner Ed Davis’s actions in the events leading up to the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing and the aftermath, which includes the citywide manhunt for the terrorists responsible for the disaster.

Secret agent and extreme athlete Xander Cage (Vin Diesel), long assumed dead, emerges from his self-imposed exile in “xXx: Return of Xander Cage” for a daunting new assignment from his handler Augustus Gibbons (Samuel L. Jackson). This time, Xander must recruit a new team of buff thrillseekers to take on the deadly alpha warrior Xiang (Donnie Yen) and stop him from deploying a seemingly unstoppable weapon known as Pandora’s Box. D.J. Caruso (“I Am Number Four”) is in the director’s chair.

JAN. 27 “The Sixth Sense” maestro M. Night Shyamalan again takes on twisted reality in “Split,” the story of a man with 23 personalities. Kevin (James MaAvoy), confounds his trusted psychiatrist (Betty Buckley) when one of his personalities abducts three teenage girls, and his most dangerous submerged persona, “The Beast,” materializes and escalates the war for survival for Kevin and everyone around him. As usual, Shyamalan also wrote the script.

“Resident Evil: The Final Chapter” takes up immediately after the events of “Retribution,” when the human population of Washington, D.C., is on the verge of annihilation and that ultimate survivor, Alice (Milla Jovovich), must return for a final stand against the undead hordes. To that end, she returns to where the nightmare began, Raccoon City, where the Umbrella Corporation is massing it forces for a final strike against the last survivors of the apocalypse. “Retribution” direction Paul W.S. Anderson returns for big finale with a cast that includes Ruby Rose, Ali Larter and Iain Glen.

Disney continues animated streak with dazzling, familiar effort BY BRANDY MCDONNELL

‘MOANA’

For LOOKatOKC

Disney delivers a visual and auditory feast of an animated film with “Moana,” which follows the basic princess movie outline but manages to lift it like a boat on an ocean wave at every turn. The Mouse House took a team approach to “Moana,” and it pays off gorgeously, with Ron Clements and John Musker (“The Little Mermaid” and “Aladdin”) helming along with co-directors Chris Williams and Don Hall (“Big Hero 6”). Tony winner and “Hamilton” mastermind Lin-Manuel Miranda crafted the soulful songs in concert with composer Mark Mancina and Samoan musician Opetaia Tavita Foa’i, and the

musical numbers are teeming with catchy melodies and adventuresome lyrics. Penned by Jared Bush (“Zootopia”), “Moana” isn’t some generic animated fairy tale. It’s respectfully rooted in Polynesian folklore, and it boasts a heroine who is no passive princess. Moana (voiced by remarkable teenage newcomer Auli’i Cravalho, a Native Hawaiian cast after a worldwide search)

is the daughter of the chief and future leader of the fictional Pacific Island of Motunui. Intrepid from an early age, Moana is chosen by the ocean to be its champion when she’s just a toddler. She grows up with a deep longing to explore its mysterious depths, but her father, Chief Tui (Temuera Morrison), sternly reminds her that all travel beyond the reef surrounding the island is forbidden. When the crops begin dying and the fish disappear, Moana realizes her Gramma Tala’s (Rachel House) fantastical tales are true: The daring demigod Maui (Dwayne Johnson, who is of Polynesian descent and surprisingly impressive singing voice) years ago stole the heart of the island goddess Te Fiti, cursing the

ocean with darkness. The ocean delivers the heart to Moana, and despite her father’s edict and her lack sailing experience, she sets off across the vast waves to find Maui. Once she locates Maui, she not only has to persuade the selfcentered demigod to help her return the heart but also has to convince him to keep going when they face formidable foes, from a fierce tribe of tiny coconut pirates called the Kakamora, who want to get their hands on the heart, to a giant treasure-hoarding crab named Tamatoa (voiced with oily glee by Jemaine Clement), who has stolen the magical fish hook that provides Maui with his shape-shifting powers. Visually, the movie is an absolute stunner, boasting

cutting-edge computer-generated animation that gives a sea battle epic scope, brings a lava monster convincingly to life and captures the luminosity of sunshine on tropical waters. But hand-drawn animation steals the show in the form of Maui’s sentient tattoos, which tell his heroic story and serve as his moral compass. Like the spring smash “Zootopia,” “Moana” refreshingly swaps the obligatory romance of so many Disney entries with an entertaining buddy movie vibe. Cravalho has the charm and chops to stay in the lead role even when Johnson starts wielding his considerable charisma, and her Moana is the kind of smart and tenacious heroine who can inspire girls and boys alike.

DEC. 30 Geoff Nelson over on Consequence of Sound wrote a stunning review of BRONCHO’s “Double Vanity” earlier this year. Here’s a line I especially liked from the story concerning the Okie band: “There is little doubt what BRONCHO know and how they know it, a beautiful and frustrating absence of complexity.” Simplicity has always been at the heart of BRONCHO and maybe that’s why its concerts often result in sweaty mosh-pits. Consider Dec. 30 as an invitation to get rowdy with the band and celebrate the heavy touring schedule they’ve sustained throughout the year. Don’t just come to hear “Class Historian.” Show up early to hear grittier versions of the band’s entire catalog and to chuga-lug along with those crunchy guitar riffs.
