The Future is now
O
ne of my favorite games to play with the music writing blogosphere each December is to watch as — through the usual bustle of year-end lists, looking-back essays, and blustery blurbs — critical consensus on an artist’s image emerges. This image often shapes the criterion by which the artist is judged in the future, but mainly it can be pretty hilarious. This game favors critical darlings of distinct appearance and easy-todescribe sound, which makes Bon Iver’s woodsy, bearded, irony-straddling soft rock (descriptors culled from the pages of various respected music rags) 2011’s top artist in this regard. But 2012’s award for Most Fun to Describe went to Future, the Atlanta rapper whose AutoTuned vocals and bare-itall lyricism inspired descriptions like “wounded-alien thing,” “bleeding cyborg,” and my personal favorite, courtesy of Spin’s Brandon Soderberg, a “dying HAL-9000.” And these only speak a little about the actual sounds on “Pluto,” his major-label debut, musically constructed by the producer of the moment, 23-yearold Mike WiLL Made It. If you’ve heard his name before, it’s probably because Mike WiLL produced some of hip-hop’s biggest hits since 2011. “Mercy,” “No Lie,”

and “Bandz a Make Her Dance,” all bear his elaborate, narcotized bass arrangements and sparkling synthesizers, and while he didn’t do every song on “Pluto,” he definitely set the standard with “Truth Gonna Hurt You”. “Pluto” finished the year as the third rap album to grace the top 20 of the Village Voice’s annual Pazz & Jop poll and has sold a respectable 266,000+ copies to date. Near the top of that same poll was Kendrick Lamar’s “good kid, m.A.A.d. city,” which is getting close to the 700,000-mark in sales, a remarkable number for a major label hip-hop debut in 2012. While record sales’ ability to determine what people are actually listening to has severely dwindled in the last 10 years, there are a lot of reasons why “GKMC” so steeply out-sold “Pluto,” and
while I won’t make the argument that one document is superior to the other (I’ve had to settle on the conclusion that it’s impossible, like choosing a favorite Steely Dan album), I think they’re both super-important because they’re pushing modern hip-hop into separate directions. While “Pluto” has a direct predecessor in Kanye West’s misunderstood and messy “808s and Heartbreak” (and probably a grandfather in some of Lil’ Wayne’s mid-2000s AutoTuned mixtape stuff) “GKMC” is the product of rap’s most exciting young technician working with a fully funded arsenal. Top Dawg Entertainment houses Lamar and his Black Hippy cohorts Jay Rock, ScHoolboy Q, and Ab-Soul, and is currently owned by Dr. Dre’s Aftermath Entertainment, a subsidiary of Interscope Records (which

is owned by Universal Music Group, in case you wanted to be sent further up the food chain). Whatever, the point is that years spent studying E-40 and André 3000’s patterns has Lamar —who grew up poor in Compton where he, at age 8, attended the video shoot for 2Pac’s “California Love” video — in the big money now. Working with elite producers like Just Blaze, Pharrell and Hit-Boy is challenging him to come up with unique, thrilling patterns and rhyme schemes (see “B----, Don’t Kill My Vibe”), and even squeezing out elaborately constructed, multipart songs. The back half of “GKMC” functions as a study in ambitious song structuring, with the 12-minute, two-part “Sing About Me, I’m Dying of Thirst” pivoting across a couple different points of view, each more empathetic, vivid and endearing than a 25-year-old rapper should be able to conjure. So what new territory are these two young hip-hop artists entering? With “Pluto,” Future proved that you can take an effect as tired as AutoTune and make something vulnerable and earnest of it without sacrificing the immediate appeal of melody. Check out “Turn on the Lights,” which does all this in a mesmerizing four minutes and nine seconds. Lamar on the other hand proved that an hourlong dissertation on the social implications of growing up in a broken Compton was a commercially viable artistic enterprise in 2012. They couldn’t appear more different, but what they share is a dedication to legitimacy and vulnerability. Future’s comes through messy and outré, and disarmingly so. Lamar’s is more calculated and better enunciated, and rewards listeners who sit for over an hour to ingest the whole of his record. As long as hip-hop is spawning artists like these guys, I’d say the genre’s in good shape.

n March 11, LOOKatOKC will descend on The 512, 408 E 6 in Austin, for the Buffalo Lounge, a showcase for dozens of Oklahoma’s best up-and-coming musicians. For two solid days during the SXSW Music Festival, LOOKatOKC will be on the spot with video, daily stories, social media and all the information you need to be in the right place at the right time for the right sounds. Dave Morris of NewsOK.com and I will be shooting new Static performances and uploading them as quickly as possible, so even if you defer SXSW and the Austin traffic for another year, you can still experience the great performers at the Buffalo Lounge and interact with me, Dave and several of the musicians on static.newsok.com/sxsw. Most exciting of all, this year we’ll be joined by LOOKatOKC columnists Matthew Carney and Kerry Myers, who will help shoot video and provide commentary on the best acts they see at the Buffalo Lounge and at SXSW as BY GEORGE LANG LOOKATOKC EDITOR a whole. This will be my first time to GLANG@OPUBCO.COM attend SXSW in its entirety, and the BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ reason is simple: Oklahoma is becoming STATICBLOG more and more of a major force at the festival. With several Oklahoma acts participating in official SXSW showcases, it is a must for LOOKatOKC to be there and witness these artists on the rise, not to mention seeing The Flaming Lips debut new material from their April release, “The Terror.” Visit our site throughout the event, and if you are down there, stop us and say “Hi.” We’ll be the ones fueled on massive caffeine intake and unabashed love for our great OKC and Tulsa musicians.

absolutely love this time of year, with local musicians are announcing huge dates at music festivals like SXSW and Norman Music Festival. Oklahoma City has been catching some fantastic touring bands, and the locals improve every time I attend a show. Here’s your guide for the next two weeks, Oklahoma. Follow wisely. » Feb. 28: Will Gaines hosts open mic night at Kamps 1310 Lounge.
Open mic starts at 8 p.m. and will continue until 11 or until the party stops. Local musicians like Baylor Judd and Matt Jewett-Williams typically make appearances at this event. If you’ve never heard Will Gaines, do yourself a favor and check him out now. He’s one of the most humble and talented people that I know. » March 2: My So Called Band at Kamps Lounge. Oklahoma cannot
get enough of My So Called Band. This 90’s cover band formed between friends from existing original bands has easily become one of the most popular bands in the Oklahoma City area — they are so much fun to watch,

tyle fads are a vicious cycle, going out of style and magically reappearing in your closet 20 years later. It makes you want to be a clothing hoarder. Your vintage wear could make you the hippest fashionista in town. An article in Lucky magazine describes the resurgence of — wait for it — overalls. It took me back to my elementary school days of couples skating, rollerblading and watching “Saved by the Bell.” I also remember looking back at photos of overalls, with one strap undone, and asking myself, “What was I thinking?” Now the farmer’s basic attire is being recreated by designer brands and sold at steep prices, with some costing as much as $1,400. Kristin Chenoweth, Heidi Klum and even the extremely youthful Miley Cyrus are wearing them. Personally, I’m not a fan of overalls. They died in the early 1990s for a reason. They aren’t flattering on any figure, not even for the perfect Heidi Klum. They create a saggylooking posterior and a boxy look. Now they are coming in leather, which is a hard trend in general to pull off anyway. My hope is the overalls will stay in the high fashion world and never make their way to large retailers or boutiques. If you do choose to wear them, fashion. allwomenstalk.com suggests purchasing a slim cut as opposed to a baggy pant to prevent being swallowed by a yard of denim. Also, choose a fun color, as opposed to the straight denim so you can make it look a little edgier and less agrarian. Dress it up with some heels and a blazer. Now that we have that covered, let’s talk about the other 1990s trends making a comeback. The past two seasons’ trends from 20 years ago include neon, dark

auburn lips, lace and florals. I’m happy to see lace back in the picture. It can look really feminine and sweet if done right. A chic lace dress or a tank with lacy black is so hot. I haven’t been able to get on board with the flower power trend, though. I used to own washed-out floral jeans, and I left them in the ‘90s to stay for good.

I think neon works best as an accessory, whether it’s a handbag, shoes, or a belt. It adds an extra pop of color to the black-and-white trend that’s all the rage right now. So what’s next from the 90s? Possibly flannel tops, slap bracelets or maybe JNCOs. Please be kind and rewind the VHS tape to set the next trend.

‘LOVE, CHARLIE’ — CHARLIE WILSON
O
ne of the music industry’s most heartwarming comeback stories in recent memory triumphantly continues with “Love, Charlie,” Charlie Wilson’s fourth album in the past eight years. The Tulsa native just celebrated his 60th birthday but he affirms his status as one of the best crooners working today with the follow-up to his Grammy-nominated 2010 release “Just Charlie.” “Love, Charlie” recently debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Top R&B Albums chart and No. 4 on the cross-genre Billboard 200 list. The former GAP Band frontman penned all 12 tracks with a songwriting team including his wife, Mahin Wilson, so it’s appropriate that “Love,

Charlie” lives up to its amorous title. Starry-eyed slow jams that spotlight Wilson’s still-soaring tenor dominate the new album. The shimmering “I Think I’m in Love” and the simmering “My Love Is All I Have” revel in the thrills of new romance, the heartfelt “Say” passionately ponders the life-altering power of true love, and the bubbly “Our Anniversary” celebrates an enduring relationship in style. And age is just a number; Wilson’s seductive “Turn off the Lights” is straight-up sexy. “Uncle Charlie,” as Wilson is affectionately known, has collaborated in the past few years with many top hip-hop and R&B stars. This time, he and fellow R&B balladeer Keith Sweat put plenty of soul into

‘JAMIE LIDELL’ – JAMIE LIDELL
amie Lidell is an accidental soul man, an English electronic dance music artist (with Super Collider) who unexpectedly emerged on 2005’s “Multiply” as a credible R&B singer. The title song to that first proper solo album sounded like a lost classic from the Stax/Volt vaults, and after making a full move to organic soul with 2008’s “Jim,” it looked as though Lidell was aiming for a growing audience of discriminating adult-alternative listeners. But Lidell threw his new fans a curve with his Beck-produced 2010 album “Compass,” a sonically challenging left turn, and on his self-titled new album he takes one of the many directions he explored on “Compass” — 1980s funk — and goes fully freak-a-zoid with it. “Jamie Lidell” uses the Minneapolis <<<

funk of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis and the “freestyle” and “new jack swing” subsets of 1980s R&B as its starting point, then embellishes beyond the big beats and syncopated keyboards. The opening “I’m Selfish” and “Big Love” sound like throwbacks at first, but Lidell executes the grooves with an ear toward modern hits — it’s the kind of confidence that comes from using pop music’s history to predict its future. Lidell can veer toward dissonance and atonality — especially on third track “What a Shame” and the Tom Wait-by-way-of Parliament groaner “why_ya_ why” — but he gets his groove back quickly, singing like a man possessed on the vocoder-fueled “Do Yourself a Faver” and “You Naked.” There does not seem to be the kind of machinery in place that would make

Lidell a star, but “Jamie Lidell” is packed with ear candy, especially the can’tlose stretch of five songs that begins with “Blaming Something” and ends with the album’s finale, the smashingly funky “In Your Mind.” Lidell probably
changes gears too much for mainstream taste, but that’s what makes “Jamie Lidell” such a killer exploration of dance-floor possibilities: you never know his next step. — George Lang, LOOKatOKC editor

‘BUILD’ – LOTUS
fter years with feet planted in both the dance music and jam band camps, Denver-based Lotus retooled significantly on its self-titled 2011 album, adopting more hip-hop textures and cleaning up the arrangements — the group finally sounded less like a jam band that loved rap and more like a hip-hop band with Bonnaroo-bred chops. Lotus’ new disc, “Build,” continues the band’s strides toward sophistication: The horn-and-strings fueled opening track “Break Build Burn” is just waiting for some luxury-rap verses from Kanye West to push it up the charts. The band still sounds thoroughly organic thanks to drummer Steve Clemens’ powerful fills and Luke Miller’s soulful organ work on “Middle Road” and “Kodiak,”
but Lotus finds a way on “Build” to incorporate dubstep effects and Krautrock keyboards — on “Ashcon” and the album’s two-part closer, “Neon Tubes,” the band seamlessly brings together these aesthetics. Bassist/sampling artist Jesse Miller’s depth charges combine with Mike Rempel’s guitars to create just the right balance between man and machine. While so many SCIFidelity bands are better experienced live than on record, Lotus, which performed this month at Diamond Ballroom, proves with “Build” that their albums are not just enticements to buy concert tickets. Few jam bands could be slotted into electronic mixes without causing a few dancer injuries, but with “Build,” Lotus never misses a beat. — George Lang, LOOKatOKC editor LOOKATOKC.COM

eah, Happy Valentine’s Day, Mother Russia. But is it “A Good Day to Die Hard,” a good time to be had by all as Bruce Willis takes his fifth shot at “shootin’ all the scumbags”?
Naaah. Loud and tedious, “Die Hard” 5 is a shaky-cam/ Sensurround blast of bullets and bombs, digital explosions and death defying feats of defying death. Not a decent villain or catchphrase in it, it’s an attempt to CIA-up the New York-cop-takes-on-theworld’s-terrorists franchise. And it doesn’t work. Director John Moore (“Behind Enemy Lines”) spends an endless opening filled with no-names speaking Russian and laying out an elaborate scheme to nab/ kill or release a rich “political prisoner” (Sebastian Koch). Moore gave his cinematographer a Steadicam and a case of Red Bull, and shot the whole thing with a jittery frame that doesn’t mask how dull the action beats are, and how

REALLY dull the chatty father-son bonding scenes in-between the action beats are. John McClane (Bruce Willis) is in Moscow to check up on a son (Jai Courtney of “Spartacus”) who’s in jail. Turns out the estranged son is CIA, and he’s on a mission. And dad, who’s “on vacation,” is interfering. Or saving the day, depending on your point of view. The kid calls the old man by his first name. “John? Whatever happened to ‘Dad’?” “Yeah, whatever happened to him?” They don’t get along. “Need a hug?” “We’re not really a hugging family.” They crash through an epic Moscow traffic jam — which Moore & Co. shoot and edit into a jumble of crushed cars and feeble wisecracks from the villains — “Boy, dis guy iz really gettink on my nerves.” They get into fights with helicopters. In the middle of the city. Not that local law enforcement notices. And it’s all in pursuit of some mysterious “file,”

which the prisoner they’re trying to slip out of the country has. Or doesn’t. Vast arsenals turn up, at their convenience. Unlimited supplies of lead are exchanged with legions of evil minions. With “Red Dawn” remade, badly, and Stallone and Schwarzenegger stinking up cinemas in the weeks leading up to this, you kind of hoped the last ‘80s action star to take his shot could conjure up a little of the old magic. Willis, sad to say, doesn’t. For 25 years, it’s generally been “A Good Day to Die Hard.” But these last two films have neutered the franchise and wrecked any hopes that Bruce as McClane might be Bourne again. The guy can still take a licking, but the character is weary, and the “I’m on vacation” line is played out. McClane needs to trot out “I’m retired” from here on out. — Roger Moore, MCT Information Services

‘AMOUR’
Rating: PG -13 (Mature thematic material including a disturbing act, and for brief language) Running time: 2 hours, 7 minutes Starring: Jean-Louis Trintignant, Emmanuelle Riva, Isabelle Huppert
stars
***
Tragic tale of aging painful to watch
T
he rumors of filmmaker Michael Haneke developing a warmer, gentler side with his latest film are somewhat earned but greatly exaggerated with “Amour.” The Oscar win for best foreign language film isn’t the only high praise Haneke has received for “Amour.” Since the film won the prestigious Palme d’Or at last May’s Cannes Film Festival, critics have been hailing it as a surprisingly sympathetic drama from the filmmaker notorious for his cold, borderline brutal way of portraying the dehumanizing cruelties people too often inflict on each other. With “Amour,” Haneke, 70, instead explores the dehumanizing effect that old age has on people. While he incorporates a few hopeful moments absent from much of his previous work, this is the same writer/director that made “Funny Games” and “The White Ribbon,” and he hasn’t changed all that much. For instance, the title, French for “love,” appears just as a corpse of one of the principal characters is hauled away. Much of the movie’s newfound warmth seems to emanate from the sensitive, soul-baring lead turns Riva and Jean-Louis Trintignant give as a long-married couple coping with a ruinous illness. Both retired music teachers in their 80s, Anne and Georges are a cultured, well-to-do Parisian couple still quietly, companionably in love. One day, Anne eerily
spaces out for a few minutes, but that moment turns out to be life-changer: She has suffered a stroke. Haneke confines almost the entire film to the couple’s finely outfitted apartment, skipping the stark hospital scenes and grim doctor’s speeches so common in these types of films. But it quickly becomes clear that a surgery to help Anne has failed, and she is confined to a wheelchair and paralyzed on the right side of her body. Anne makes her husband promise that she will not be hospitalized again. The once-vibrant woman’s health declines steadily and inexorably but not quickly, and caring for his increasingly infirm wife takes a horrific toll on Georges. There is no indignity of age or illness that the couple doesn’t suffer through together: Georges hauls Anne on and off the toilet, later learns to change her diapers, spoons baby cereal into her mouth and coaxes her to drink from a sippy cup. As Anne loses her speech, Riva earns her Academy Award nod by conveying every humiliation with her eyes and limited body language. Trintignant should have received an Oscar nomination of his own, since he effectively emits a helpless agony his character rarely verbalizes. The sicker Anne becomes, the more apparent it becomes that Haneke isn’t abandoning his usual funny games. In our death-dreading Western culture, he
deserves credit for unsentimentally and unflinchingly depicting the ugly realities of growing old and dealing with terminal illness. Yes, there is value in fixing an unblinking gaze in the places where our worst fears dwell, but as usual, Haneke seems intent of punishing his audience. The filmmaker just keeps lingering on and revisiting one of the most painful human experiences to the point of tormenting the viewer. The film’s pace deliberately drags; 127 minutes is a long time to watch someone die — and to watch the person she loves most lose his life, too. For anyone who has experienced even at a distance the loss of a parent, grandparent or other loved one to a long illness, “Amour” is practically torture. There are a few instructive moments: Anne’s nowfamous former piano student (Alexandre Tharaud) can’t conceal his horror at her condition or stop asking her questions about what happened to her; a homehealth nurse (Dinara Drukarova) tends her patient with an almost mocking callousness and then curses Georges when he fires her; and the couple’s daughter Eva (Isabelle Huppert) continually confronts her father, insisting there must be something they can DO for her mother. In the end, Haneke’s “Amour” is less about love than about loss, depicted as painfully as possible.

oulder, Colo.’s Big Gigantic distills the intricate musicality of jam bands and the head-spinning, pulsing power of electronic dance music, a combination that is building a huge audience for the duo of Dominic Lalli and Jeremy Salken. Formed in 2008, Big Gigantic honed its considerable skills in live settings, energizing audiences at Bonnaroo, SXSW and Chicago’s Lollapalooza, and the duo’s music works well on stage or in headphones — “Nocturnal,” the band’s
latest album, reached No. 2 on iTunes’ electronic chart. As the duo prepares to play March 3 at OKC Farmers Market, drummer Salken talked about the band’s energy and approach to live performance, as well as its plans for an upcoming album.
Q: Since your first release in 2008, BG has been gaining tremendous popularity. What are your expectations for 2013? Salken: More of the same from us. We got a new light rig that we’re super excited about and we’re working on a new album for the end of the year. Other than that, playing shows all day, every day.
Q: Big Gigantic is known for high energy performances and for making appearances at large music festivals such as Bonnaroo and SXSW. How will this OKC show differ from the others?
Q: Big Gigantic’s sound is a combination of electronic beats with live saxophone and drums. You two are also known for incredible light shows and astounding performances. What pushed you two to combine these electronics and organic sound to make your music?
Salken: The only difference is that we’ll be in Oklahoma instead of Tennessee — we’ll bring it just as hard for OKC people!
