The Lips “Terror”-ize Austin
L
et’s not beat around the bush: aside from getting to see a few sets by Oklahoma bands I really and truly love, my South By Southwest sucked some serious eggs. My laptop got stolen right out of my backpack and I subsequently spent a chunk of my time in Austin on the phone with my bank and changing out passwords to everything I’ve ever accessed online instead of roaming the world’s largest playground for music fans. This happened late Wednesday night, and by Friday I’d cheered up a little, mostly by the prospect of seeing the Flaming Lips play a big, free public show at Austin’s Auditorium Shores. Rumor had it they’d be playing all the way through their forthcoming record, “The Terror,” (which rumor also had that the band’s label, Warner Bros., wasn’t too wild about), so I was pretty excited about the enormous spread of possibilities for this show. Would “The Terror” sound as bleak as they were leading on in interviews? How would the many fans the band picked up in the mid-2000s with friendlier-listening albums like “At War with the Mystics” and outsized, thrilling live shows react to the new stuff? Would there even be a space bubble, and if not, would fans leave feeling cheated? And what does “The Terror” actually sound like, anyway?
The Flaming Lips. Photo provided.
The nine songs that droned for over an hour or so along Lady Bird Lake definitely explored a different part of the human condition than any previous Flaming Lips album, even the band’s wriggling, paranoid 2009 gem, “Embryonic”. If “The Soft Bulletin” is a meditation on death, then “The Terror” felt like a meditation on a sort of still-living-but-shriveled-up sinister existence, a climax-free, zombie-like state of persistence where life continues even though all its joy and love have been sucked out as if by some cosmic, all-powerful vacuum. That feeling of persistence came from these heavily digitized, decidedly nonrock drum beats. Derek Brown spent most of his evening smacking at a drum pad instead of strumming a guitar, and Kliph Scurlock’s cymbals often went unbeaten. There were these occasional outbursts of beautiful, shimmering melody, too. “The Terror”’s biggest, darkest moment comes in the middle of the record in a song called “You Lust” that’s got a big, army-stomping beat and features Sarah Barthel from Phantogram (whose hair Wayne grasped while singing, at her odd request). I’m not

one to get easily disturbed by video but the accompanying visuals —of a man-shaped blob choking a woman-shaped blob— left me unsettled. Suffice it to say, a lot of the kids in tank tops got bored. About a dozen people around me left before the album was over, though a dedicated group of fans nearest the stage clapped hard and cheered at the end of each song. “The Terror” proved unique and bizarre, well-realized but difficult to love. I wondered about it for days, way more so than any of the other sets I saw at SXSW. What place does hard-to-access, depressing music have in 2013 anyway, when you can use Spotify to stream just about whatever you like? And then I read the reviews. “The band subjected the rapidly dwindling crowd to an hour of oddly paced new material interspersed with drawling, unintelligible patter from Coyne, which felt like an enormous middle finger to the audience, 90 percent of which comprised families, gray-haired folks on dates, and chubby sorority girls sucking boozeinfused Jell-O out of veterinary syringes,” read one in the Austin Chronicle. “These people want the bunny suits, the confetti
cannons, the upbeat songs they can sing along to and that make them feel happy, not watch a man yank a grown woman around by the hair in the name of ‘art.’” Texas Monthly agreed with the Chronicle’s one-digit assessment, saying it was “100 percent correct”. If SXSW’s own backyard alt-weekly dumps on a band for refusing to do the same old thing, what does that say about the state of the festival? Are they there out of genuine curiosity? Or just to get their regular happiness injection? The strongest conclusion I’ve come to in all of this is that curiosity is a valuable commodity in 2013. A genuine curiosity for music is to be defended and cultivated, and I think the Lips did that in Austin, much the way they did when they conducted one of their Parking Lot Experiments down there in 1997. Much like those, “The Terror” was something different and new, and I’m more curious and open to the possibilities of human experience for having been challenged by it. Bunny suits or not.

t its best, hip-hop is folk music. It tells us something about the human condition, the places and people that formed an artist’s world view. Jabee, the subject of this issue’s cover, is getting attention nationally after several years as one of Oklahoma’s best rappers thanks to “Stephanie,” a great single that explores Jabee’s recovery from getting dissed by a middle-school crush nearly 20 years ago — one of the most relatable subjects in pop music. The song was so strong that Jabee’s personal hip-hop hero, alt-rap titan El-P, agreed to produce the track. This kind of honesty almost always pays off with a standout track, and the dividends don’t stop there. During South By Southwest in Austin, Dave Morris and I asked Jabee to take a break outside Oklahoma’s Buffalo Lounge showcase and talk about the buzz that “Stephanie” is generating with serious hip-hop publications such as XXL. While we were setting up, ACM@UCO president and Flaming Lips manager Scott Booker pulled Jabee aside and offered him an opportunity to teach one of the school’s master classes. Jabee could not stop smiling. After that, he went on to play two more showcases at SXSW, continuing to work hard to tell his stories and collaborate with a wide range of artists. LOOKatOKC can hardly wait to hear the next full-length album from Jabee — “Stephanie” feels like an artistic breakthrough, one that will lead the way to the body of work we always thought he could create.

ho wears short shorts? When I was young, the only shorts out there were denim or khaki, and rompers came in the form of overalls. Then there were the “skorts” — a skirt in the front and shorts in the back. And at private school, we wore Culottes. Those were the long shorts that looked more like skirts. Now, shorts come in every length, pattern and color. This is one of the most exciting trends to spark in the last few years. The ability to go to work in shorts without looking like Daisy Duke or a floozy has arrived. Some of the shorts at retail stores are as nice if not nicer than dress pants, and they can come in crazy patterns without looking too obtrusive on your body since it’s just a small part of your outfit. Dress them up in pumps or fun wedges, and you get a classy look. Wear shorts with patterned tights, and you’ve created a completely new look. On a Whim at Classen Curve in Oklahoma City carries the fun lace shorts that are extremely popular right now. They give women a feminine look that goes really well with the pastel trend we are currently seeing. One look that is less feminine is the Bermuda short. Designers including Michael Kors, Nicole Miller and Vera Wang brought in the Bermuda look as part of the New York Fashion Week Spring/Summer collection. If you’re still afraid of being judged at work with the shorter shorts, this is another viable option. You can pair it with a button up blouse or go for a full suit jacket. ‘Wonderstone’ can’t conjure magic for success
N
ow you see it, now you don’t. The funny stuff, that is. “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” succeeds in conjuring some hilarious hocus-pocus one minute, then fails to pull any hilarity from its hat the next, depending on who is on-screen at any given moment. Even under the direction of Emmy-winning Don Scardino (“30 Rock”) and working from a script by Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley (“Horrible Bosses”), Steve Carell can’t seem to conjure much in the way of sympathy or solid laughs from the title character, a long-established Las Vegas magician with an overblown ego, a soured relationship with his performing partner and one-time best friend Anton Marvelton (Steve Buscemi) and an outdated act that’s losing its marquee glow on the glittering Vegas Strip.
Carell is relentlessly one-note, unfunny and unconvincing as a self-centered jerk, in sharp contrast to Oklahoma City’s own Mason Cook, 12, who, in flashback scenes, plays Burt as a bullied kid who turned to magic for self-esteem and found friendship with nerdy Anton (played as a boy by Luke Vanek), another young aspiring illusionist. The real mirth materializes when a startlingly muscular, long-haired Jim Carrey seizes scenes as guerrilla street magician Steve Gray, who shuns glitzy theater venues in favor of ambush performances in outdoor settings, drawing crowds as much for his wild-eyed charisma as his outrageous, pain-defying physical stunts (sleeping all night on hot coals, holding his urine for days at a time, cutting holes in his skin to retrieve disappeared objects, etc). Alan Arkin also brings some bright moments as retired old-school magician Rance Holloway, Burt and Anton’s boyhood hero.
As Gray’s popularity soars, the fortunes of the Incredible Burt and Anton — not to mention the last vestiges of their friendship — are about to vanish, unless they can come up with the most sensational stunt Sin City has ever seen. Burt eventually gets his comeuppance and starts to regain his true sense of self, but it’s Carrey’s reliably uproarious, rubber-faced, over-the-top shtick that saves the whole show from going up in a puff of smoke. Buscemi is woefully wasted as sidekick Anton, Olivia Wilde as Burt and Anton’s “lovely assistant” Jane — aka Nicole — serves as little more than eye candy for the males, James Gandolfini barely registers as a casino boss, and Carell never quite transforms himself into a protagonist worth rooting for. In short, “The Incredible Burt Wonderstone” doesn’t quite do the trick.

‘Admission’ takes light look at college life
O
n a scale of sheer likability, “Admission” scores fairly high on its SATs (See At Theaters). This earnest but lightweight comedy-drama-romance from director Paul Weitz (“About a Boy”) — scripted by Karen Croner from a novel of the same title by Jean Hanff Korelitz — is a busy affair with a high-achieving cast (Tina Fey, Paul Rudd, Lily Tomlin, Wallace Shawn), a somewhat convoluted plotline and a gently satirical eye for the cutthroat process of gaining entrance to America’s most elite and selective universities. The pantheon of higher learning in this case is Princeton, where Fey’s straight-laced Portia Nathan serves as an overworked but disciplined admissions officer, guarding the ivy-covered gates against the annual onslaught of bright, ambitious, overachieving high school seniors vying for one of the Ivy League’s few coveted letters of acceptance. Portia’s annual ritual — of poring over reams of admission documents, visiting schools to deliver bland advice (“be yourself”) and finally championing a select few candidates in an up-or-down vote

with her fellow admissions officers (Wallace Shawn as the officious dean of admissions and Gloria Rueben as her chief rival for promotion) — is knocked off kilter with the appearance of an old college friend/flame, Rudd’s touchy-feely do-gooder John Pressman. John, who runs a crunchy-granola alternative high school in upstate New York, believes he has a young genius on his hands in Jeremiah (Nat Wolff of “The Naked Brothers Band”), an abstractly precocious math and science whiz with an odd penchant for ventriloquism. And besides that, John is convinced that Jeremiah is the illegitimate son Portia gave up for adoption 18 years ago in college. Naturally, this news throws Portia’s well-ordered life into chaos, exacerbated by the cheating ways of her live-in boyfriend, the priggish English Department chairman Mark (Michael Sheen, Fey’s Brittwit boyfriend in “30 Rock”), the firebrand romantic advice of her randy, feminist mother Susannah (Lily Tomlin, hilarious and sporting a Bella Abzug tattoo) and John’s entreaties to lower her rigid standards for the unorthodox Jeremiah. In the midst of Portia’s agonizing over Jeremiah’s
LOOKATOKC.COM
identity and his worthiness for Princeton mantles, a grudging romance sparks up with the well-meaning but footloose and paternalistic John. Weitz, who seems to alternate between personal films (“Being Flynn”) and for-hire jobs (“Little Fockers”), navigates the meandering story and its tonal shifts, not always smoothly, through some odd twists and turns. But his uncertainty with the material is redeemed somewhat by pithy performances from his cast. Fey and Rudd form an amiable if unexciting couple. They exude a breezy and enjoyable chemistry without generating much real heat. Wolff turns in an easygoing but confident performance in a tricky role as the teen savant. And Tomlin virtually steals the movie with her prickly, caution-to-the-winds performance as the old-school bra burner. If “Admission” lacks the teeth to be a truly biting satire on the madness of the college selection ordeal, it works some genial magic as an old-fashioned romantic comedy with a light message and dramatic undertones to give it some academic heft. — Dennis King, entertainment writer

Director uses slow-burning suspense in thriller ‘Stoker’
A
s the opening credits of “Stoker” flow and falter, blow in with the breeze and materialize out of the smoke of extinguished birthday cake candles, it’s clear that South Korean director Park Chan-wook’s distinctive style isn’t going to be lost in translation with his first English-language film. To say the psychosexual thriller is more about style than story is in no way an insult: Park and cinematographer Chung-hoon Chung adroitly use extreme camera angles, distorted focuses and an ever-shifting color palette to develop the film’s substantial, slow-burning suspense. He and his crew have an exquisite command of the movie’s sound, too. In concert with the masterful score, the amplified cracking of an eggshell, the foreboding rasp of a pencil being sharpened and the heightened beat of a metronome lend an eerily atmospheric mood to actor Wentworth Miller’s (the
TV show “Prison Break”) conventionally Hitchcockian script. Known for his shockingly violent cult favorites “The Vengeance Trilogy” — “Sympathy for Mr. Vengeance,” “Oldboy” and “Sympathy for Lady Vengeance” — Park even cannily uses the audience’s expectations of his movies to build an almost intolerable sense of dread. It’s no mystery that something rotten is happening inside the Stoker family’s Southern gothic mansion, and film fans familiar with Park’s repertoire will be braced for the worst until the end credits roll. The cinematic mind-job also serves as another stellar showcase for Australian actress Mia Wasikowska (“Alice in Wonderland”) and Brit Matthew Goode (“Watchmen”), who have a creepily effective chemistry. Wasikowska stars as introverted high schooler India Stoker, whose beloved father Richard (Dermot Mulroney) dies in a horrible accident on her 18th
birthday. At the funeral, she is shocked when her Uncle Charlie (Goode), her father’s younger brother, turns up. After all, India didn’t even know she had an uncle. Over the protests of India’s fretful great-aunt, Gwendolyn (Jacki Weaver), Charlie moves in with the teenager and her cold, brittle mother, Evelyn (Nicole Kidman). The ingratiating Charlie fixes gourmet meals, works in the garden and develops an inappropriately cozy relationship with the youth-obsessed widow. But he also has watchful eyes for India, who is both distrustful of and drawn to her handsome long-lost uncle. Although he gets a bit heavy-handed with his use of symbolic omens like scuttling spiders and stuffed birds, Director Park (as the cast and crew respectfully dubbed him) makes an unsettling and auspicious Hollywood debut with “Stoker.”

‘THE NEXT DAY’ — DAVID BOWIE
ith the title of his new album, “The Next Day,” plastered in the middle of the cover photo of his 1977 album “Heroes,” David Bowie is sending a message that the music of his first collection of new songs in 10 years not only takes up where 2003’s “Reality” left off, but also contains shades of his artful electro-pop experiments in Berlin with Brian Eno and producer Tony Visconti that included “Low,” “Heroes” and “Lodger,” all of which still stand as some of his best works more than 30 years down the line. With Visconti back at the controls and a little help from some of Bowie’s favorite sidemen (guitarist Earl Slick, bassist Tony Levin), “The Next Day” delivers those promised goods, from the spirited and danceable opening title track in which the Thin White Duke proclaims “Here I am /
Not quite dying,” to the jubilantly rhythmic, synthesizer-shiny love song “The Stars (Are Out Tonight),” which conjures nostalgic images of young lovers lying in the grass and staring with wonder at a velvety black, generously sequined heaven. “Where Are We Now?” is a string-shaded ballad reminiscent of John Lennon feeling all romantic and existentially inspired at once, while the altered militaristic percussion and dramatic vocal protestations of “I’d Rather Be High” deliver Bowie’s anti-war sentiments in very certain terms. Then there’s the soulful “You Feel So Lonely You Could Die,” and the fever-dream drone of “Heat” to round out an album that proves Ziggy still hasn’t lost the ability to spread magical Martian stardust and some of the most sophisticated and elegantly passionate pop-rock that’s ever fallen to earth. “The Actor” is back. — Gene Triplett, entertainment editor

‘THE 20/20 EXPERIENCE’ – JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE
T
public radio station, was playing JT’s jams by the end of the decade. Except for guest appearances, Timberlake largely sat out the last seven years of pop music, but “The 20/20 Experience” has him applying for Michael Jackson’s old job, a position that has attracted few serious or deserving applicants. And no, “The 20/20 Experience” is not an achievement on the level of classic Jackson, but while 2002’s “Rock Your Body” had “Off the Wall” aspirations, most of this album is actually in the ballpark. The gold-plated urbane disco slammer “Suit & Tie” with Jay-Z and Timberlake’s regal centerpiece ballad “Mirrors” are the obvious out-of-the-gate winners, but Timberlake and his collaborating producers, Timbaland and Jerome “J-Roc” Harmon, spend their downtime from the singles diving into expansive pools of funk. Most of the 10 tracks on “20/20” clock in around seven minutes, allowing plenty of time,
his matter of Justin Timberlake — his ascendance as not only an A-list pop performer but a singer worthy of serious consideration — took some convincing, and a good portion of the persuasion was done when he was not even recording music. Timberlake’s hilarious and totally game performances on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon” and as a member of the exclusive club of five-time “Saturday Night Live” hosts went a long way toward transforming his popularity into coolness, and those who were still suspicious of his boy-band roots began to reassess. Plus, his music undeniably improved: the unencumbered freak funk of “SexyBack,” “My Love” and “Sexy Ladies” from 2006’s “Future Sex/Love Sounds” was a quantum leap from ‘N Sync and 2002’s “Justified.” Even KCRWFM, Los Angeles’ proudly eclectic but decidedly noncommercial taste-making

as Timberlake chants on an exhilarating Afrobeat showstopper, to “Let the Groove Get In.” This kind of stretching suggests that Timberlake is cannily walking the fine line between being a polished chart monster and an all-out weirdo. By exploring earthy Southern soul on “That Girl” and pulling in a Parliament Funkadelic-style guitar solo on “Spaceship Coupe,” he is incorporating just enough eccentricity to be interesting but not alienating. This is a growth album for Timberlake, but also for Timbaland, who produces with newfound warmth. Opening salvo “Pusher Love Girl” still incorporates the yelps and asides that have been Timbaland’s stock in trade since his work with Missy Elliott, but the Hammond B-3, hand claps and strings behind Timberlake’s Curtis Mayfield-style falsetto make this feel both classic and current. Just two years ago when he was deep into movie commitments, Timberlake sounded ambivalent about a singing career, but on “The 20/20 Experience,” he seems to have a vision for life on the pop throne. — George Lang, LOOKatOKC editor

mong mainstream country music stars, Gary Allan has always been a bit of a maverick, and his trendbucking ways prove more tuneful and welcome than ever on “Set You Free,” which just debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard Country Albums Chart and the cross-genre Billboard 200 Chart. The California native’s musical maturity is even more appreciated than usual amid the glut of Southern rock party anthems permeating the country airwaves these days. The follow-up to his critically acclaimed 2010 effort “Get Off on the Pain” is a sort of emotional concept album, with the singer-songwriter exploring various musical styles as he follows the narrative arc of a man coping with a broken love affair. The stages of grief are represented on “Set You Free,” although not necessarily
in order. There’s a kind of dodged-a-bullet vibe to the rollicking opener “Tough Goodbye,” in which he drawls that it tore him up watching the girl try not to cry but quickly adds “I’m not done being free.” Already a No. 1 hit on Billboard’s Hot Country Songs chart, the darkly pretty single “Every Storm (Runs Out of Rain)” sets a hopeful tone and showcases Allan’s raw vocal style. He moves on to anger with the gritty countryblues boot-stomper “Bones,” and by the middle of the album, it’s clear the pain has set in. The organ opening of “It Ain’t the Whiskey” contrasts with the stark lyrics, as his protagonist interrupts an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting to declare “It’s all these things I can’t forget ... It’s ain’t the whiskey that’s killing me.” Allan puts a bleakly surreal spin on the island country trend with the wallowing “Sand in My Soul,” and he harmonizes beautifully with co-writer

“When I was 11 years old, I liked this girl named Stephanie, and she called me ugly,” Jabee said while taking a break outside the 512, the Sixth Street bar that was ground zero for this year’s Buffalo Lounge, the annual SXSW showcase for Oklahoma artists. “I think I’ve been carrying around that bitterness since I was 11. I wanted to tell a story, so I wrote a song like I was 11 years old but with the mind that I have now, so I could tell her who I would become and what I would be doing.” Jabee had the subject and the verses ready to go, but he needed someone to put it all together. Since his teens, Jabee had been a fan of ElP, the rapper, producer and founder of the Definitive Jux label, and when asked during interviews what his dream collaboration would be, Jabee always mentioned El-P. After a few years of casual talk, Jabee sent El-P an instant message, formally asking him to produce a single. “I said, ‘If I don’t ask, I’ll never know: would you consider doing a track with me?’ He said, ‘Let’s do it,’ and I promise you that I was thinking, ‘This can’t be for real.’” El-P sent Jabee a backing track he created during sessions for Killer Mike’s acclaimed 2012 album, “R.A.P. Music,” but had ultimately set aside. In turn, Jabee asked his friend, North Carolina-based soul singer Carlitta Durand, to write a chorus for the song.

He mixed it and mastered it for me, a kid from Oklahoma City.” El-P suggested that he rename the song “Stephanie,” which helped give the song more emotional resonance for Jabee. Then, Jabee found a way to use the Steven Jones-directed video, which included a bullying scene, to do some good for current 11-year-olds facing difficult social situations. After Taft Middle School teacher Emily Ray saw the video, she invited Jabee to speak at a March 8 school assembly. Jabee talked to the Taft students about the many forms that bullying can take and how to deal with the issue. Fortunately, the bad memories and big dreams of Jabee’s childhood are now coming together beautifully, thanks to El-P and the growing buzz around “Stephanie.” He’s now working on completing his next album, a project that will no doubt benefit from the attention his single is receiving. “I’m just trying to work hard and be good at this rap thing,” Jabee said. “But I’m living my dream now. My dream, as a 15-year-old kid, was to work with El-P.”

For men, fashion is a much slower rollercoaster ride than for women. Men’s fashion trends evolve over time — they don’t change overnight as in women’s trends. “By not going extreme on the fashions, the changes are more subtle,” said David Ooley, owner of Mr. Ooley’s Designer Clothes, Suits & Shoes at Penn Square Mall. “I think men are a little slower to change, and they don’t demand the change. “Sometimes they have to be given a gentle nudge.” One thing men do notice, however, is how other men dress, and they do not want to be out of step. For spring, men’s fashion is bright, playful and full of patterns, with new high-tech fabrics and a slim, sleek silhouette reminiscent of the 1960s “Mad Men” look. We talked with four local fashion experts about what men will be wearing this spring and summer. Our experts are Steve Haggard of S.J. Haggard & Co., Lucas Westendorf and Spencer Stone of Spencer Stone Co. (both stores are in Nichols Hills Plaza) and David Ooley.

One of the most important trends in menswear is the narrow silhouette. Still playing off the “Mad Men” trend, it’s all about proportions as they relate to the shape of a shirt, rise of a collar, width of a tie and lapel, shirt sleeve length and coat and pant lengths. For most men, a collar with a medium spread and rise works. Mini collars with a very short rise are on trend on New York runways, but not embraced in Oklahoma, the experts agreed. WESTENDORF: “When you look at a gen-
tleman, you’re supposed to see about an inch of shirt collar sticking out of the lapel of the jacket when you look at him from the back. It correlates to the amount of cuff that’s sticking out of the sport coat, to the amount of pocket square sticking out. If one of those things are out of proportion like a miniature collar or the sleeves of his shirt aren’t long enough, it doesn’t create a visually pleasing look.” STONE: “Our ties are all three inches or narrower. No wider. A younger perspective, with narrower size lapel, keeps it all in balance. Everything we have just fits slimmer, trimmer.” OOLEY: “Sometimes (the slim fit trend)
frightens guys because they’re afraid they’re going to lose comfort if the clothing is downsized. But we’re careful to edit our buys for our store into models that have a contemporary look but are not extreme. Real guys can wear them.” HAGGARD: “If you tie a great big tie and
you’re wearing narrow lapels, it throws everything out of balance. Cuff should break right at your wrist. The bigger the neck size, the larger the cuff. Some guys end up with a big neck, but their (wrists) are not that big. And the cuffs come down and fall over their hands. Cuffs should never fall down on the heel of the hand. It should stop where the heel begins.” Many men have their cuffs altered to fit their wrist sizes better, espeically since an industry move toward sizing men’s dress shirts as small, medium and large instead of using neck and arm measurements. When altering, allow an inch and a half of blousing in the sleeve, Haggard says, so the cuff stays in place however you move.
Men’s suits, shirts and ties are blooming in shades of blue, green, purple and lavender, along with the traditional gray and navy. When putting together a suit, shirt, tie and pocket square, don’t get too matchymatchy. Varied patterns with similar color families add interest Also, collars and cuffs lined with contrasting colors, patterns, or white, are popular. Shirts and ties are making big color and pattern statements, with gingham checks and plaids playing a huge role in men’s spring and summer fashions. Spring sport and dress shirts come in every color of the rainbow, and especially pastel shades, and can be dressed up with a suit or worn casually with jeans, with or without a blazer and pocket square. OOLEY: “Sometimes guys get overly fussy
on matching. It’s almost better if it’s not a perfect match. You want a little interest. Everything’s kind of coming up brighter. Ties and shirts are meant to pop some life into a suit.” WESTENDORF: “The dressiest shirt has
a contrasting collar and cuff. It’s very business, very powerful. I’ll put that on a guy with dark denim, tan tasseled loafers and a navy gingham checked sport coat. And everybody would freak out about that outfit. Every woman wants it on her guy and every guy wants to wear it. We will sell our dressiest shirt to wear with jeans and boots and a sport coat. ” Printed chambray is one of Stone’s most popular fabrics for spring, especially worn opencollar, sans tie, with a blazer and dark jeans. A chambray print shirt is also a great choice paired with white or color jeans or chinos for a casual weekend or vacation look.

Pocket squares are showing up everywhere you look. Pocket squares are a great way to add a pop of color, interest and extra style to a sport coat and suit jacket.

According to www.pocket-squares.com, the glorified hankies were especially popular in the 1920s, when men would wear a pocket square in combination with a suit, a vest, and the era’s typical fedora hat. The website has a good tutorial on several popular pocket square folds. Once they achieve the perfect fold, some men like to pin the square in place. Silk squares don’t keep a fold as well as other fabrics, so Ooley says they usually look better randomly situated in the pocket rather than carefully styled. OOLEY: “Pocket squares have become re-
ally big again. It’s being driven by our youngest customers. And I think what is driving it is if a guy is going to wear a jacket or even a suit with no tie, he’s wanting to have some color or pattern. If you’re going to go without a tie, you need an interesting shirt and a pocket square. Otherwise you have that ‘They lost my luggage’ look.”

MADMEN COLLECTION CHANNELS MOD TRENDS “Mad Men” season 6 premieres April 7 on AMC and we couldn’t let the huge “Mad Men” fashion trend go without mention. The “Mad Men” style has been influencing fashion for years and there’s no reason to think the slim, mod styling is going anywhere soon. The Banana Republic MadMen Collection takes its inspiration from costumes featured in the show and is designed in collaboration with Emmy Award-winning Costume Designer for “Mad Men,” Janie Bryant.
Today’s menswear fabrics are far more advanced than they were even a decade ago. Whereas wool used to be too itchy and silk too shiny, today these fabrics are high-tech and blended to be softer, more wrinkle-resistant and more wearable for men than ever. Men are looking for fabrics that are comfortable and light to match the decade’s warmer climate trends. OOLEY: “Wool is the ultimate natural fi-
ber — with its self-regulating temperature. So these lightweight woolens are not only beautiful and comfortable but they’re amazingly wrinkle-free.
“With a new era of fashion inspiration, the design process was exciting for us and allowed for lots of creativity, which is completely visible in the end result,” said Simon Kneen, Banana Republic Creative Director and Executive Vice President, in a press release. “We took Janie’s mod inspiration for the costumes on-screen and translated it in a way that today’s Don or Megan will aspire to wear.”
“Sport coats are still a very dynamic part of our business. Guys are wanting soft constructed jackets. Soft meaning they don’t have real built-up shoulders so they don’t have an overly tailored or formal look. You can wear it with a tie for business but also can pair with casual pants and knitwear or no tie for casual.” French cuffs are a trend that’s on the outs, but Spencer Stone offers a convertible cuff that can be buttoned normally or fastened with cuff links for a dressier look.
