his week, LOOKatOKC’s publisher, OPUBCO, announced plans to renovate the long-dormant Century City Mall at 100 W Main in downtown Oklahoma City and move our operations to that location next year. As I start my fourth year of editing LOOKatOKC, I see this as a great opportunity for this publication to move forward as an ever-evolving and integral part of how you enjoy your days and nights in this great city. Being in the center of downtown activity, close to Chesapeake Energy Arena, Bricktown, Automobile Alley, Midtown, the Plaza District, Film Row and everything else that is part of this city vital renaissance will only improve our mission. I remember talking about this with colleagues in the past, even in the stages when LOOKatOKC was being strategized nearly a decade ago.
Moving downtown will put us directly into that mix. We cover concerts and events in all areas of the city, and that will never change. But look at my cover essay on Jeff Mangum, the genius behind Neutral Milk Hotel, and where he is playing on Jan. 19: ACM@ UCO Performance Lab. The planned new location for OPUBCO will be just blocks away. LOOKatOKC will be mere steps away from Thunder games and A-list concerts at the arena and events at the Civic Center Music Hall and Bricktown. Internet technology made it easier for us to access and experience events from nearly anywhere, but there is no substitute for being there in-person. And that is what we will be — in-person and onlocation. LOOKatOKC prides itself on being on top of everything, but with this new and exciting chapter in our development, we will be in the center of things.

Four things to get you excited for 2013
W
elcome to 2013, everybody: The holidays usually see the output of new music slow from its usual ruptured million-gallon aquarium velocity to a manageable trickle, so I’ve taken the opportunity to look ahead for what 2013 holds, and offer a few good reasons why you should be interested. Here’s to a 2013 filled with great new songs to love from new and old bands. Thing #1: James Murphy is on Arcade Fire’s fourth record.
It was summer 2010 the last time an Arcade Fire record hit the racks and at the time I was interning for Mr. Lang in The Oklahoman’s features department. I remember all this because it took about half a day for the press download of “The Suburbs” to go through, presumably because every critic in the western hemisphere was staring at their computers, trying to will the download tickers across the screen with their feverish concentration. AF Record #4 is slated for a 2013 release and the band’s manager was quoted in Music Week last month confirming that Murphy’s first ma-

Brothers in the other. With apologies to those bands of fashionable woodsmen, I’ll say that the award belongs in the beating Midwestern heart of America.
jor post-LCD Soundsystem music endeavor will be production work on “three or so songs.” This is good news for fans of LCD and Arcade Fire listeners who thought “Half Light II” and “Sprawl II” — with their epic scale and awesome synthesizer textures— were the best parts of “The Suburbs.”
Thing #4: My Bloody Valentine returns.
Thing #2: Beyoncé is performing at the Super Bowl halftime show.
After Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake’s infamous 2004 “wardrobe malfunction,” the world’s biggest stage overcompensated by hosting old-guy rock bands for the next six years straight. (Count yourself lucky we were spared similar costuming issues the year Bruce Springsteen played.) It’s since shifted to mainstream pop mode with a Madonnaled mosaic of flash, glitter, and bang last year and the Black-Eyed Peas’ 2011 cyborgian spectacle. But considering the possibilities of a Beyoncé-led pageant of superstars is downright dizzying here in 2013. A Destiny’s Child reunion is already confirmed, so check that off the list. Who else among her regular stable of A-list songwriters and collaborators will appear? Hubby Jay-Z’s a lock for “Crazy in Love,” a song that actually may be too big and exciting for even the Super Bowl to handle. Lady Gaga’s a fair bet to appear for “Telephone.” Kanye West will surely do or wear something intentionally insane at some point that people will complain and argue about for weeks on end. I’m holding out for a long-shot André 3000 appearance (he and ‘Ye both

showed up on the deeper cut “Party” on B’s last album), but if you’re looking for an insane prop bet to blow money on, wager that Diplo will be there plunking an MPC for the beat on “Run the World (Girls)”. Thing #3: An Oklahoman could beat out Mumford & Sons for a Grammy.
The fact that Bearden, Okla.’s John Fullbright has his debut album up for a Grammy in the first place is kind of amazing, not because of some deficiency in the record (it was one of the country’s strongest folk offerings in 2012) but because the Grammys aren’t exactly known for being inclusive when it comes to little guys. This year’s Best Americana Album field is a true David and Goliath matchup, with humble Fullbright in one corner and the bellowing trad-anthemics of Mumford & Sons and The Avett
HEADPHONETICS 15: GET READY FOR 2013
Remember when Guns ‘N Roses’ “Chinese Democracy” finally came out? Well My Bloody Valentine’s third record will be like that, except it most likely won’t invite instant disappointment (but “Street of Dreams” rules and it would’ve been a big hit if Billy Joel had written it). It will also inspire Belieber-level insanity among grown-ass men. Hands-spread-tothe-heavens joy, open weeping, the whole shebang. Every sound engineer worth his equipment has been waiting around forever to hear new material from the band that blew the top of their skulls off with “Only Shallow,” but if their currently unnamed album will be your introduction to them, simply know this: 1991’s “Loveless” — their last LP — cracked open the canon for a half-dozen rock sub-genres and prompted Robert Smith of The Cure to declare that MBV had “quite clearly p — — d all over us,” and that “It’s the sound of someone who is so driven that they’re demented.” It bears mention that 2013 should be a good year if you like rock music by bands that haven’t released much in a while. Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, Queens of the Stone Age, and Yo La Tengo have all announced fulllengths — don’t wait for Record Store Day to get in line.

Keys player Laura Leighe Gossett and band partner Zack Dumbleton is a winning pair – their pop-punk sound is danceable and fun. Sounds like: Katy Perry with a spash of Adele, and a tiny sprinkle of Taylor Swift. Listen to Laura Leighe here:

Underground heroes, international icons and emerging upstarts all managed to make memorable statements in the Oklahoma music arena in 2012. The 100th anniversary of Woody Guthrie's birth turned discerning ears toward Okemah, while the emergence of singer-songwriter John Fullbright kept them there.
Garth Brooks was inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame one month and threw his enthusiastic support behind former bandmate Tom Skinner's self-titled album release the next. On the national scene, Sooner State-born and bred hit makers Carrie Underwood and All-American Rejects released LPs that showed marked maturation, while local singer-songwriters Camille Harp and John Calvin left me yearning for more with excellent self-released EPs. Oklahomans were involved in one of the biggest and best compilation albums of the year, as Tishomingo resident Miranda Lambert and her Pistol Annies contributed a song to the soundtrack "The Hunger Games: Songs From District 12 and Beyond." Oklahomans also were involved in one of the most star-studded and stellar tribute albums of 2012, as Vince Gill, Leon Russell and Ronnie Dunn helped Jamey Johnson with his "Living for a Song: A Tribute to Hank Cochran." Oklahoma music was so good in 2012 that it was tough for me to limit my list of top LPs to just 10. So check out the honorable mentions at the bottom of the list. STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 11

Audra Mae and the Almighty Sound “Audra Mae and the Almighty Sound” (SideOneDummy Records)
1
The sophomore LP from the Putnam City High School graduate and her aptly named backing band has stayed on my personal playlist since its release way back in February, and I’ll probably keep the swaggering romp “Little Red Wagon,” the toasty-warm ballad “Old Italian Love Songs,” the foot-stomping raveup “Jebediah Moonshine’s Friday Night Shack Party” and more in rotation for another 11 months and beyond. The Oklahoma-born and bred chanteuse wasn’t bragging in the album’s opening number: She is “The Real Thing.”
Ray Wylie Hubbard “The Grifter’s Hymnal” (Bordello Records)
2
The 66-year-old Oklahoma-Texas music icon, who was born in Soper, throws down with a raw rock ‘n’ roll album that is by turns rootsy, bluesy and twangy but always uninhibited, a little bit messy and a whole lot ornery. The album opens with “Coricidin Bottle,” a blazing romp that boasts wicked-smart lyrics including “I got a Coricidin bottle that I use as slide/And a woman sweet as a Tootsie Roll/When she kissing and licking and cussing and a grindin’/Shakes the mortal coil round my amaranthine soul.” The album stays both rowdy and intelligent for 45 solid minutes. Now that’s rock ‘n’ roll.
David Byrne and St. Vincent “Love This Giant” (4AD)
3
We already knew that the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer best known for fronting the Talking Heads and the Tulsa-born singer/songwriter/guitarist also known as Annie Clark were individually capable of creating artful pop-rock. But who knew the divergent experimentalists would make such cohesive collaborators, too? Their deliciously brassy duet album goes down like the musical version of a black and tan, with a full serving of Byrne’s coolly creative world music wanderings and a full serving of St. Vincent’s darkly cerebral guitar rock layered in perfect balance. And all those intricate horns are like the tasty foam topping this heady sonic brew.
John Fullbright “From the Ground Up” (Blue Dirt Records/Thirty Tigers)
4
When the Grammy nominees for Best Americana Album were revealed last month, it quickly became clear that one of these things was not like the others. The Okemah-area singer-songwriter and his Kickstarter-funded studio debut will compete against Bonnie Raitt’s “Slipstream,” Mumford & Sons’ “Babel,” The Avett Brothers’ “The Carpenter” and the self-titled debut from The Lumineers when the golden gramophones are handed out in February. If we’re judging on musical merits alone, though, I wouldn’t call him an underdog. From the fire-and-brimstone opener “Gawd Above” to the tender piano ballad closer “Song for a Child,” the authentic album Fullbright built proves that he deserves his shot at Grammy glory.
5
JD McPherson “Signs & Signifiers” (Rounder Records rerelease)
The Broken Arrow singer-songwriter got a well-warranted opportunity last year to take his freewheeling brand of retro rock nationwide when Rounder rereleased his celebrated 2010 indie debut. Recorded with vintage microphones into an old 1960s Berlant 1/4-inch tape machine, McPherson’s fun fusion of 1950s-inspired rock, old-school R&B and rockabilly still sounds as fresh and classic as ever. Plus, the rerelease gave the Talihina-bred musician the richly deserved chance to reach a national audience, top the Billboard Heatseekers Albums chart and appear as the musical guest on “The Tonight Show With Jay Leno,” “The Late Show With David Letterman” and “Conan.”

The 11-piece Western swing supergroup featuring Norman-born and Oklahoma City-bred Country Music Hall of Famer Vince Gill and many of Nashville’s top session players doesn’t just cover old Bob Wills songs on its studio debut. Gill, who only officially joined the group in 2010, wrote or co-wrote five of the album’s nine superb original tracks, along with contributing his considerable chops as a singer and guitarist. His heartbreaker “Three Sides to Every Story” has all the hallmarks of an instant country classic.
7
Wanda Jackson “Unfinished Business” (Sugar Hill Records)
It’s remarkable enough that the Oklahoma City-based Queen of Rockabilly is recording new albums at age 75. But it’s even more impressive that the Maud native continues to push herself musically. In 2011, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer released the barnburner comeback album “The Party Ain’t Over,” produced by respected rocker Jack White, and in 2012, she teamed with acclaimed alt-country singer/songwriter/producer Justin Townes Earle for “Unfinished Business,” a completely different sonic experience that still sounds just like her. While “The Party Ain’t Over” celebrated her rock ‘n’ roll trailblazing with raucous horns, scorching electric guitars and forays into neo-soul, funk and calypso, Jackson and Earle (son of wild-card Texas singer-songwriter Steve Earle) planted their collaboration in her country, rockabilly and gospel roots. Here’s hoping Jackson’s 31st studio album won’t be her last, because I can’t wait to hear who she teams with next and what they come up with.
8
Tom Skinner “Tom Skinner” (598 Recordings)
Take Garth Brooks’ word for it: The eponymous album from red dirt elder statesman is a “very, VERY special gift” indeed, a warm and inviting showcase for the Bristow native’s vibrant storytelling and convivial voice. Although the Tulsa singer-songwriter’s name often turns up in album credits for the likes of the Red Dirt Rangers, The Great Divide and The Departed, Skinner has rarely recorded himself, preferring the energy of playing live. With his stalwart pal Mike McClure, frontman of The Great Divide and co-founder of 598 Recordings, and the esteemed Joe Hardy, who has worked with the Georgia Satellites, Steve Earle and ZZ Top, coproducing, Skinner’s album has the laid-back, cozy vibe of a great living room show.
9
Karen Dalton “1966” (Delmore Recordings)
The 75th birthday of the folk enigma passed with little fanfare last year beyond the release of this collection of impromptu, previously unheard tracks of the Enid-bred singer/musician and her then-husband, guitarist Richard Tucker, rehearsing for a gig at their remote, primitive cabin near Summerville, Colo. With her goosebump-inducing croon and natural gift as a song interpreter, it’s a shame Dalton — who died at the relatively young age of 55 — is hardly known outside Bob Dylan’s reference to her in his 2004 biography “Chronicles: Volume One.” Bob the Bard’s praise that “Karen had a voice like Billie Holiday’s and played the guitar like Jimmy Reed” is right on the mark, and her cover of “God Bless the Child” is probably the only one that can hold a candle to Lady Day’s original.
10
Shiny Toy Guns “III” (Five Seven Music)
The highly anticipated return of vocalist Carah Faye Charnow, whose crystalline pipes helped propel the Shinys to a 2007 Best Electronic/Dance Album Grammy nomination for “We Are Pilots,” turned out to be more than just a reunion. It was a full-blown revitalization for the electropop band, which bassist/synth player Jeremy Dawson and singer/guitarist Chad Petree, who hail from Shawnee, founded in 2001. It’s a testament to the album’s overall strength that I wind up with a new favorite track every time I listen to it.
Honorable mentions: Jimmy LaFave “Depending on the Distance” (Music Road Records); The Departed “Adventus” (Underground Sound/Thirty Tigers); Chad Sullins and the Last Call Coalition “Incommunicado” (Smith Music Group); Parker Millsap and Michael Rose “Palisade” (self released); and K.C. Clifford “The Tag Hollow Sessions” (Free Skipper Records). <<<

‘Zero Dark Thirty’ more than an action thriller
I
f “Zero Dark Thirty” were merely an action thriller, it would be remarkable in that even though the whole world knows the deadly outcome, it’s still incredibly suspenseful. But as director Kathryn Bigelow and screenwriter Mark Boal’s gripping, journalistic narrative about the long, grueling hunt for 9/11 architect Osama bin Laden is so much more than a macho exercise in revenge mythology, it’s all the more significant. With its astute blending of shoe-leather journalism, potboiler politics, police procedural, personal psychodrama and high-octane action thriller, it’s one of the most riveting, debate provoking and entertainingly ripped-from-the-headlines movies to come along since “All the President’s Men.” “Zero Dark Thirty” (military jargon for half-past midnight, the launch time of the SEAL Team Six raid) is framed by two stark scenarios — opening with an horrific aural evocation of Sept. 11, 2001, (static radio chatter and panicked cries of help from the stricken Twin Towers) and ending with the calculated, clinical SEAL strike on bin Laden’s austere compound in Abbottabad. In between, Boal’s exhaustive reporting loads the story with arcane ins and outs of counterterrorist

technique, as well as political infighting, internal CIA debates and numerous dead ends and setbacks encountered along the way. There are dispiriting tragedies (the 2008 bombing of the Marriott Islamabad in Pakistan and the 2009 suicide attack on Afghanistan’s Camp Chapman that killed seven CIA operatives). There are nifty bits of techno wizardry (like triangulating a cellphone signal amid the teeming populace of urban Pakistan to track down a bin Laden courier). And there are the harrowing but nonjudgmental depictions of “enhanced interrogation” (read: torture) by American ops — personified most chillingly by Jason Clarke as brainy CIA jock Dan — that have already fired up harsh partisan debate. Bigelow is perfectly adept at juggling the story’s mind-boggling detail with its shadowy moral ambiguity and keeping the narrative hurtling forward. And giving human dimension to the relentless hunt is chameleon actress Jessica Chastain, who plays CIA analyst Maya with a single-minded ferocity that should cause even the most hardened al-Qaida goon to quake in his tunic. Maya is a composite figure based on a real-life CIA operative who Boal encountered in his research. It’s one of the film’s more daring conceits to cast her as

the single most dogged pursuer in the decade-long hunt for bin Laden. In his second outing with Bigelow (after their Oscar winning work on “The Hurt Locker”) Boal deftly evokes inspiration from The New Journalism of the 1960s and ‘70s, working in the tradition of such socalled “nonfiction novels” as Truman Capote’s “In Cold Blood” and Tom Wolfe’s “The Right Stuff ” to create a form of cinematic storytelling he calls “the reported film.” Even given the necessary composites, distortions, dramatizations and broad literary license taken, Bigelow and Boal’s fictionalized version of the post9/11 manhunt wields uncommon power to cast complex and abstract historical events into a defining narrative. For good or ill, this is likely the version of events most people will equate with fact. Both epic-scaled and intimate, “Zero Dark Thirty” is a masterly accumulation of journalistic detail and fictional urgency that packs a potent one-two punch — it draws us in with entertaining urgency and leaves us struggling with the flawed concept of “closure” and the questionable place of ruthlessness in service of our humanity. — Dennis King, staff writer

‘GANGSTER SQUAD’

‘Gangster Squad’ never realizes full potential
‘G
angster Squad” starts with an amazing true story about Los Angeles police detectives taking down a notorious mobster and processes it down to a simplistic cops-versus-villains melodrama. This was a story worthy of grand, “L.A. Confidential”-style film noir that winds up shooting blanks. Missed opportunities abound, including a cast that looks like it shouldn’t fall short in any set of circumstances and director Ruben Fleischer, whose previous films, “Zombieland” and “30 Minutes or Less,” were fueled by a never-flagging supply of energy and wit. But in “Gangster Squad,” the ingredients just never gel together. Just imagine what this could have been: Sgt. John O’Mara (Josh Brolin) is the leader of an off-thebooks division of the Los Angeles Police Department known as the Gangster Squad, a group of
square-peg detectives assembled in the late 1940s to take down Mickey Cohen (Sean Penn), the Chicago Outfit hoodlum who is running most of the bookmaking and organized crime in Southern California. O’Mara puts together a dream team, including gunslinger Max Kennard (Robert Patrick), surveillance expert Conway Keeler (Giovanni Ribisi) and wild-card Jerry Wooters (Ryan Gosling), who takes a shine to Cohen’s moll, Grace Faraday (Emma Stone). Yes, “Gangster Squad” is filled to its snapbrimmed hat with possibilities for greatness, and the film certainly achieves a romantic vision of post-World War II Los Angeles, complete with period landmarks such as Slapsy Maxie’s nightclub and a re-creation of the original “Hollywoodland” sign. But Fleischer’s sense of style is muted in “Gangster Squad” when everything about his previous two films suggested an unhinged mastery of action. Even players like Stone and Michael Pena, scene stealers
from Fleischer’s earlier projects, are given little to do. As for Penn’s Mickey Cohen, he almost seems like he’s been cobbled into the scenes from another movie — his grotesque facial prosthetics and outsized acting make Cohen feel like a “Dick Tracy” villain. In real life, Cohen looked a lot more like Bob Hoskins in “Who Framed Roger Rabbit?” and the Gangster Squad’s pursuit of the man lasted over a decade. This was all detailed richly in the source material, a seven-part 2008 Los Angeles Times series called “L.A. Noir: Tales from the Gangster Squad.” But in Fleischer and screenwriter Will Beall’s version, the battle is seemingly over in months and what little substance was left in the final film evaporates. For a film that has dodged controversy for its stylized violence, “Gangster Squad” feels bloodless.

F IF T E E N Y E A R S AG O, Neutral Milk Hotel released one of the most influential and acclaimed albums in indie rock. The band broke up soon afterward, and their leader disappeared. But with a recent series of concert dates, including OKC performances at ACM@UCO, Mangum seems to be getting his 'Aeroplane' flying again.

THE STUFF ROCK ‘N’ ROLL LEGEND IS PACKED WITH DISASTERS, but sometimes a disappearance can feel just as tragic. If Kevin Shields actually delivers on that My Bloody Valentine album in 2013, it will be a full 22 years after the release of their 1991 shoegazer masterpiece, “Loveless.” Before David Bowie announced this month — on his 66th birthday, no less — that he would release a new album in March titled “The Next Day,” it was widely assumed that the Thin White Duke would not be returning. It took Brian Wilson nearly 30 years to complete “SMiLE.” And some people, like Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, never returned, their genius diverted by misadventure or madness.

But in the pantheon of indie rock, few absences resonated quite like that of Jeff Mangum. Shortly after the release of his band Neutral Milk Hotel’s second album, a 1998 work of timeless ramshackle beauty called “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea,” Mangum broke up the band and walked away. Some said it was because the acclaim and attention was just too much, or because the challenge of living up to Neutral Milk Hotel’s legacy was far too great. Regardless, Mangum made no public appearances for a decade after “Aeroplane.” He was not a recluse — friends and fans reported seeing him frequently in and S TO R Y C O N T I N U E S O N PAG E 1 8

around Athens, Ga. at the turn of the 21st century — but Mangum seemed to want nothing to do with the fame that comes with rock ‘n’ roll mastery. He made some field recordings of Bulgarian folk music and contributed some music to The Apples in Stereo’s 2006 album “New Magnetic Wonder,” but he did not release any new material of his own. When asked by Pitchfork in 2002 if there was new music coming from Neutral Milk Hotel, he said that the windows for such opportunities “don’t stay open for very long.” He went on to express a degree of disillusionment with how his mind began working after “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea.” “I went through a period, after ‘Aeroplane,’ when a lot of the basic assumptions I held about reality started crumbling,’” Mangum told Pitchfork’s Marci Fierman. “I think that before then, I had an intuitive innocence that guided me and that was a very good thing to a certain point. But then I realized that, to a large degree, I had kept my rational mind at bay my whole life. I just acted on intuition in terms of how I related to life. At some point, my rational mind started creeping in, and it would not shut up.” When his rational mind piped up, the music stopped. The sadness of this stems from the fact that “In the Aeroplane Over the Sea” was the culmination point in one of the great stylistic movements in indie rock history, the Elephant 6 collective. An exploration of the Elephant 6 Recording Company’s actions and influence works as an alternate history of 1990s indie rock.. Bands such as Neutral Milk Hotel, Olivia Tremor Control, The Apples in Stereo, Of Montreal, Elf Power and Beulah empham sized melody and psychedelic adventurism at a time when alternative rock was going for volume. Much of “Aeroplane,” which Mangum once said was inspired by Anne Frank’s “Diary of a Young Girl,” is given a musically timeless execution — some of the

JEFF MANGUM instrumentation has almost no traditional rock ‘n’ roll components (“Fool” is a good example), but then modernity can sweep in just as quickly on tracks such as “Holland 1945.” The influence of “Aeroplane” is most keenly felt in the sea shanties and pre-rock orchestration of early Decemberists albums. It’s hard to imagine albums such as “Her Majesty” or “Castaways and Cutouts” without “Aeroplane” providing the maps and charts for those musical journeys. The critical estimation of “Aeroplane” only increased during Mangum’s absence, but over a decade after its release, Mangum started working his way back into performing. In 2009, he took part in a benefit concert for New Zealandborn indie musician Chris Knox, then a 10-song set for an

invited audience in Brooklyn, N.Y. the following year. Two full sets in Toronto in August 2011, then an appearance for Occupy Wall Street protestors two months later. By the time he announced a set at Coachella in 2012, it was clear that Mangum sightings were not the stuff of myths anymore. Now, as part of a January-February 2013 solo acoustic tour, Mangum will appear Jan. 19 at ACM@UCO Performance Lab. According to his Web site, walkingwallofwords.com, Mangum is playing sets in places like Oklahoma City with an eye toward making them unique experiences — he does not plan to play these towns again “in the foreseeable future.” At a time when people are so used to having everything at their disposal, any time they want, a Jeff Mangum concert in Oklahoma City, one that will only happen once, is worth every effort to see. Welcome him back, and wish him safe travels going forward.
