he first time I heard a Girl Talk album was at the Flaming Lips’ 2006 concert at the Zoo Amphitheater — the Lips were playing “Night Ripper” at top levels while fans filed into the space. It was not Gregg Gillis’ first attempt at melding music from disparate sources into seamless new sounds, but “Night Ripper” was the album that launched him into the public consciousness and sealed his reputation as a music collage artist. He was no mere “mash-up” artist — each track Gillis creates has more layers than most mere mortals can discern with their fleshy, imperfect ears. Girl Talk’s latest mixtape, 2010 “All Day,” represents a high water mark for Gillis, and belongs in any reasonable conversation about the best DJ-style production of the past 25 years, including the Dust Brothers’ work on Beastie Boys’ “Paul’s Boutique” and Hank Shocklee and the Bomb Squad’s mixing on Public Enemy’s first four albums. Gillis is almost singlehandedly responsible BY GEORGE LANG for making it safe to sample again: LOOKATOKC EDITOR GLANG@OPUBCO.COM after the court decision against Biz BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ Markie that opened the door for STATICBLOG lawsuits against sampling artists, it became prohibitively expensive for hip-hop acts to “clear” their appropriations, but Gillis had a solution: he gives his mixes away, uses the source material through a “Creative Commons” license and earns his money from performances. Brandy McDonnell’s excellent cover story on Gillis, found on page 20, talks about his performance Aug. 2 at the Diamond Ballroom, a show we promoted with free tickets on lookatokc.com because we are nuts about this guy’s work, and it makes a strong case that the ideal Girl Talk experience is the live setting. A Girl Talk concert is not just watching someone push buttons. In the article, he talks extensively about how he makes mixology a compelling in-person experience. Go read it now, and if you’ve done so in time, go to the concert — Gillis works for every dollar, probably burns 2,000 calories every night and makes everyone in the house do the same.

‘Shut up’ is ‘Last Waltz’ for Internet age

I

can’t recall my first time listening to LCD Soundsystem, but I can recall the first time I ever cried listening to LCD Soundsystem. I’ll spare you the gory details, but the song was “All My Friends” and thankfully nobody was there in my car that night to watch me lose my cool while James Murphy meditated on losing cool. That episode reocurred in my head almost two weeks ago when I saw “Shut Up and Play the Hits,” the much-anticipated documentary following Murphy —who first began making music as LCD Soundsystem when the sardonic, scuzzy “Losing My Edge” became an underground dance classic in 2002— before, during, and after his last show under that moniker. There’s a moment in the film where Murphy, now 42, visits the space where his band’s equipment’s in storage the day after the fateful final show, an affair that sold out Madison Square Garden. He stares unfocusing into the room, runs his hand across a few synthesizers, and —with no warning— starts to weep and whimper like a child left alone. It’s the most poignant moment of a selfaware documentary about a self-aware guy; “Shut Up” is basically the “The Last Waltz” for the Internet age. But there’s this weird distance between the scene (and the film in general) and the viewer, whether he or she is an LCD obsessive or neophyte. For all its tearyeyed, last-day-of-camp hugs, carefully posed Chuck Klosterman questions, and straight-up

rocking, “Shut Up and Play the Hits” never decisively closes the case on why a band would bow out when they’ve reached their critical and popular peak. Oh, plenty of reasons are proffered, but they’re all from Murphy: “I want to have a normal life;” “Living on the road is so trying;” “I need more time to shave my face in the morning” (seriously, it takes the guy three minutes of trimming just to get to the grizzle on his neck); but they just don’t seem to add up. Filmmakers Will Lovelace and Dylan Southern focus the vast majority of screen time on Murphy, but I’d love to have heard what backup singer/instrumentalist Nancy Whang and drummer Pay Mahoney and company each think about the decision to dissolve the act after many of them gave a decade of their lives to

play the songs Murphy wrote. Songs that they performed so well as to elevate their live show to a thing of great renown, despite practically zero presence on the popular charts. Shouldn’t they have a say in this? And of course I’m terribly biased in this whole ordeal. LCD Soundsystem’s music helped me laugh, think, and —in one incident— cry my way through college. (Most of those songs are in the playlist, which is composed of all the songs performed in the film.) It gets me terribly sad to think of the couple of LCD albums that we’ll never get to hear, but I’ve chosen to respect Murphy and his decision instead of dwelling on the “what if.” I suppose I’d hoped that “Shut Up” would finally put my hopes for closure to rest, but we rarely get a clean, sufficient ending in life, do we?

‘FALLING OFF THE SKY’ – THE DB’S

he original lineup of New Wave, power-popping Southern boys known as the dB’s are back together in the studio for the first time in 30 years, and “Falling Off the Sky” sounds like they never took off on all those solo flights. Of course, chief guitarslinging singer-songwriters Chris Stamey and Peter Holsapple have never been out of touch for long, having recorded two duo albums, “Mavericks” and “Here and Now” in 1991 and 2009 respectively, with original bassist Gene Holder and founding drummer Will Rigby making guest contributions here and there. So it’s been a long warm-up since the last dB’s album that gathered all the charter members under one roof (1982’s “Repercussion), but from the opening garage-band twang and Vox organ strut of Hol-

sapple’s “That Time is Gone,” you know dB’s still stand for decibels — in the high numbers. Stamey brings his trademark guitardriven Brit-influenced melody and beat to “Before We Were Born,” Holsapple throwing in the requisite harmony, and Rigby contributes the broken-hearted bubblegummer “Write Back,” sweeping the listener right back to the heyday of Boyce and Hart, without losing sight of the band’s modern edge. Then there are the Beatleesque (you knew that word was coming) chamber strings weeping through Stamey’s dreamily melancholy “Far Away and Long Ago,” and the electric chiming and psychedelic imagery of “The Adventures of Albatross and Doggerel” to dispel any possible doubts that his ‘60s influences are deep-rooted as ever. And Holsapple, late of the countryrocking Continental Drifters with

ex-wife Susan Cowsill, brings a dash of rural steel to “I Didn’t Mean to Say That” and “She Won’t Be Driving in the Rain,” two of the more reflective songs on the album, rounding out a generous dozen shots of julep-flavored jangle that are sweet going down but still pack a wallop.

‘WELCOME TO THE FISHBOWL’ – KENNY CHESNEY

F

ans of Kenny Chesney’s signature cocktail of islandcountry anthems, power ballads and the middle-age introspection found on his acclaimed 2010 studio effort “Hemingway’s Whiskey” likely will eagerly dive right into “Welcome to the Fishbowl.” But overly fussy production threatens to drown some of the best songs on the superstar’s latest album. Case in point: His newest gold-certified smash “Come Over,” a steamy-but-sad booty call that needs its cheesy echo effects like the perpetually bronze singer needs a full bottle of self-tanning cream. Chesney and co-producer Buddy Cannon build up so many layers of vocals and instrumentation over the mournful ballads “El Cerrito Place” and “To Get to You (55th and 3rd)” that a listener practically needs an archaeology

degree to scrape down to the promised poignancy. Likewise, “Sing ‘Em Good My Friend,” about an old man selling his last worldly possession, an old guitar, to pay his sick wife’s medical bills, has the potential to become one of those great old country story-songs, but the emotion gets lost amid the bevy of backup singers incessantly cooing over every chorus. Fortunately, fewer frills get in the way of the heartbreak Chesney pours into the relatable piano ballads “While He Still Knows Who I Am,” about a son trying to make the most of the time left with his dementiaplagued father, and “Always Gonna Be You,” about a man despairing over lost love. The Tennessee native and U.S. Virgin Islands dweller channels a beachy breeze on “Time Flies,” ponders turning a friendship into something more with “Makes Me Wonder” and delivers a

‘THE DARK KNIGHT RISES’

‘Rises’ delivers satisfying end of trilogy

W

ith “The Dark Knight Rises,” the final film in director Christopher Nolan’s meditative and brutal “Batman” trilogy, Nolan orchestrates an artistically brave, uncompromised conclusion. It does not top 2008’s “The Dark Knight,” but it sustains that film’s excellence, building tension throughout and ending the saga with equal measures of wrenching catharsis and cautious hope for Bruce Wayne’s beloved, beleaguered Gotham City. Eight years after the Batman took the fall for District Attorney Harvey Dent’s death and disappeared, the prosecutor is something of a Gotham saint: his policies of airtight due process, harsh penalties and nonexistent parole effectively decapitated organized crime in the city. Wayne (Christian Bale) and Commissioner Jim Gordon (Gary Oldman) quashed the reality of Dent’s final miserable days as Two-Face, but as “Rises” opens, Wayne is a recluse, in seemingly permanent mourning after the death of lifelong love Rachel Dawes. He stays locked in Wayne Manor with only Alfred (Michael Caine) allowed to see him. It seems, for the moment, the Batman is no longer needed. Then a master jewel thief masquerading as hired help steals something precious and irreplaceable from Wayne, who begins to re-engage, slowly but just in time, because the clever thief, Selina Kyle (Anne Hathaway) offers the billionaire a warning. There’s a storm coming, Mr. Wayne,” she said. “You and your friends better batten down the hatches, because when it hits, you’re all going to wonder how you

ever thought you could live so large and leave so little for the rest of us.” To be sure, Wayne let many things slip, including his business and charities, and just as the entreaties of philanthropist Miranda Tate (Marion Cotillard) and the lassitude of his company awaken his concerns, the storm begins. It starts with identity theft, corporate malfeasance, bad policing and robbery, but it ends with Bane (Tom Hardy), a monstrous, hulking master criminal who speaks through a mask that looks like one-part radiator, one-part ball gag. Bane comes on like a nightmare and operates like a terrorist, but he speaks like a master politician through that awful mechanical filter. Once he harnesses one of Wayne Industries’ instruments of good for the ultimate evil, a terrified Gotham City populace is cowed into a kind of Stockholm syndrome-like fealty to the captor, who leverages Dent’s overreach to pit neighbor against neighbor in a city edging toward apocalypse. Gordon and his police force, including a trusted rookie cop named John Blake (Joseph Gordon-Levitt), must fight a guerrilla war against Bane as the clock ticks toward Gotham City’s end time. As one of the few auteur directors entrusted with massive event movies in 2012, Nolan creates spectacular, big-budget summer films that are never truly beholden to gadgets or effects. Much as he did in “The Dark Knight,” Nolan evokes the grubby 1970s New York police dramas of Sidney Lumet as often as he deploys the aesthetic of “Batman” scribes Frank Miller or, in the case of “The Dark Knight Rises,” Chuck Dixon. Yes, the effects are flawless and a new weapon from Lucius

Fox (Morgan Freeman) is a total knockout for this series, but Fox’s gadgets always serve the story, not the other way around. “The Dark Knight Rises” is a crime drama at its heart: most of the horrors could take place in the real world, resulting in far greater tension and believable stakes. The story of “Rises” pivots on key plot points from the 1993 “Knightfall” series by Dixon and other collaborators, but Nolan and his brother, co-screenwriter Jonathan Nolan, streamline elements of that storyline to fit the arc of these films — significant callbacks to 2005’s “Batman Begins” show up, including thematic and aesthetic through-lines and some real and satisfying surprises. The director also continues to display a thoughtful sensibility toward casting: the core acting team including Bale, Freeman, Caine and Oldman delivers at peak levels, and the ringers from 2010’s “Inception” (including Cotillard, Gordon-Levitt and Hardy) fit nicely in Nolan’s repertory. Hathaway brings intelligence and sleek charm to Kyle, and, in particular, Hardy overcomes the considerable challenge of acting without most of his face showing (his situation is roughly an inversion of Bale’s) and still coming on like a palpable threat. “The Dark Knight Rises” is nearly three hours long, but it moves forward with the assurance that comes from great, uncompromised storytelling, and its conclusion flouts the conventions of its genre. But as this trilogy ends, that seems to be the point: Like its predecessors, “The Dark Knight Rises” does not seem to know it’s a summer event movie, and it is all the better for it.

‘BEASTS OF THE SOUTHERN WILD’

Rating: PG -13 (Thematic material including child imperilment, some disturbing images, language and brief sensuality) Running time: 1 hour, 31 minutes Starring: Quvenzhane Wallis, Dwight Henry.

‘Beasts’ creates indelible story of disaster, survival

S

uffused with that potent blend of beauty and ugliness that stays with a viewer far longer than either of those qualities alone, “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is a fever dream about people choosing to live on the margins as a cataclysm of supernatural proportions bears down on them. Benh Zeitlin’s feature-length debut might be about the end of the world, or it might only be about the end of their world, but if the survival of the human race ultimately depends on 6-year-old Hushpuppy, it might be in good hands. Played by newcomer Quvenzhane Wallis, Hushpuppy lives in a secluded bayou community known as “the Bathtub,” a collection of makeshift homes assembled from scavenged lumber and corrugated metal. It is a place completely cut off from everything else and there is no discernible economy — people who live in the Bathtub hunt, fish, gather and scavenge, taking care of each other and avoid contact with outsiders. It is a place with its own mythology, a community where folklore is fact and Hushpuppy’s school teaches about Aurochs, prehistoric animals trapped in ice that, once freed from their frozen

<<<

I

crypts, will serve as harbingers of doom. Hushpuppy learns to be self-sufficient from the beginning. Her father Wink (Dwight Henry) suffers from dementia that might be a symptom of physical illness, and so when Wink does not have a wild animal to roast over a fire, Hushpuppy can open a can and cook whatever is in it — beans, dog food, anything that can simmer over a flame. She has almost no memory of her mother, an almost mythical wild beauty who, according to Wink, “swam away” and left her husband and daughter to fend for themselves. What “swam away” means is left entirely to the viewer, but “Beasts of the Southern Wild” hints that the topography of southern Louisiana is permanently altered in the wake of ecological disaster, and New Orleans is either gone altogether or left in shambles. Zeitlin’s 2008 short film “Glory at Sea,” which featured some of the same themes and minor characters, touched on this with its story of outsiders constructing a boat from materials salvaged from the underwater Crescent City as they try to find loved ones trapped under water. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is equal parts magical realism and “Road Warrior,” a rich and disturbing

LOOKATOKC.COM

fantasy in which the familiar and the otherworldly collide. Zeitlin and co-writer Lucy Alibar, who mined elements for the screenplay from her one-act play “Juicy and Delicious,” invoke the still-palpable legacy of Hurricane Katrina, the BP oil spill and the disappearance of protective wetlands to create this world, a place that becomes threatened after the storm to end all storms hits and the Aurochs prove to be all too real. Zeitlin cast “Beasts” with nonactors, and Wallis is an extraordinary find — she is frequently described in news stories and reviews as a “force of nature,” and it’s a fitting phrase. Wallis gives the film its emotional ballast and is the chief focus of Zeitlin’s camera, and her ability to take hold of viewers’ attention is a key factor in the success of “Beasts.” But it is not the only one. “Beasts of the Southern Wild” is a kind of cinematic Rorschach test, a film that invites all manner of interpretation. It will mean many things to many different people, but at its core is a story of the stalwart, bullheaded survival of a little girl who can face down any monster — real, prehistoric, environmental or metaphorical. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘Step Up’ sets civil disobedience to block-rockin’ beats

‘‘S

tep Up” movies do no harm and never fail to showcase pretty people executing superhuman dance moves, but the puppy-dog earnestness, Mentos commercial-level rebellion, silly plots and downright laughable acting still make these films feel like tests of will. To its credit, “Step Up Revolution” tries for something more resonant than competing teams in a poplocking battle for supremacy, but the standoff between super-fit Miami dancers and an evil land developer winds up playing like “The Idiot’s Guide to Civil Disobedience — Flash Mob Edition.” Yes, flash mobs — that past-its-prime YouTube phenomenon in which intricate mass dancing events materialize in unlikely and usually crowded public spaces — provide the main impetus for “Step Up Revolution.” A renegade band of ragtag service workers in Miami’s hotel district calling itself “The Mob” stages flash mob events that crash gallery openings, tie up traffic in South Beach and send local television reporters into paroxysms of breathless stupidity. It’s all to win a YouTube contest to attract 10 million hits, collect a cash prize and achieve endless fame as

dancers in Pitbull music videos or something. At the center of all this Miami heat is a Romeo-andJuliet couple trying to overcome their differences to find love and stave off rampaging commerce. Sean (Ryan Guzman) works in a posh hotel but lives paycheck-to-paycheck and flash mob-to-flash mob. He immediately falls for Emily (Kathryn McCormick) during a meet-cute at the hotel’s beach club, not knowing that she’s the daughter of Bill Anderson (Peter Gallagher, who deserves better), the hotel owner who wants to tear down the city’s riverfront to build more marble-and-glass accommodations. Emily wants to escape her corporate cocoon to become a great modern dancer, and soon is pulled into the Mob. One of the victims of the proposed tear-down would be Ricky’s Club Habanero, the traditional salsa club where the gang hangs out, which means that “Step Up Revolution” is essentially a Mickey Rooney-Judy Garland “Babes in Arms” plot with a layer of modern corporate greed and dubstep beats. The Mob is going to save Ricky’s Club Habanero by dancing into the hearts of the city council, which will clearly reconsider siding with Anderson thanks to these lovable scamps’ irrepressible dance explosions.

Those who missed 2010’s “Step Up 3D” will not feel lost stepping up to this fourth installment, since there are only tenuous connections between the films: Jason (Stephen “Twitch” Boss) from the previous film’s “Pirates” crew has relocated from New York to Miami to join the Mob, and then Moose (Adam Sevani) from the second and third movies shows up late in the game without any explanation. Beyond Gallagher and a few of the older supporting players, most of the cast are dancers first, actors second or maybe third. The most bizarre and memorable performance comes from former “So You Think You Can Dance” judge Mia Michaels, who plays the chief choreographer in the company that Emily dreams of joining. Michaels drifts through her scenes, calling people “baby girl” and generally acting like cartoon characters do after being shot with tranquilizer darts. With all that and more, “Revolution” fills the traditional “Step Up” slot as a late-summer time waster, technically impressive but a little embarrassing. But the lessons are there: next time a major corporation tries to invoke eminent domain and take away your favorite bar, just break out the sound system and start krumping to Skrillex.

‘TH E S E CRE T W ORL D’

A thinking person’s online role-playing game

I

t’s no secret that most massively multiplayer online games take place in either fantasylands, sci-fi galaxies or apocalyptic dominions, which is why it’s so refreshing that “The Secret World” is ambitiously set in a twisted take on our own world where apparently everything that ever happened on “The X-Files,” “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” and “Fringe” is real. With “The Secret World” (Electronic Arts, for PC, $49.99, with 30 days of game time), developer Funcom has a created a mythical virtual Earth populated with haunted houses, secret societies, vampire cults and zombie invasions that feels completely distinct from other titles in the genre like the hugely popular “World of Warcraft” and “Star Wars: The Old Republic.” The adventures begin in New York, London or South Korea, depending on whether recruits choose to join the clandestine Illuminati, Templar or Dragon factions. However, that decision hardly matters because players of any ilk are quickly dispatched to a dark corner of New England where they pursue — solo or together — all the same quests. “The Secret World” has abandoned a typical class structure in favor of abilities determined by weapons such as shotguns, swords, assault rifles and magical books. Players can equip two at a time with a total of seven active and passive abilities. The freedom is wel-

come, but it probably sounds more groundbreaking for the genre than it plays out. While many quests are of the kill-an-X-amount-of-this or fetcha-Y-amount-of-that variety, the developers have neatly masked such MMO grinding with storylines that are both spooky and funny. They’ve also created mind-boggling investigation- and puzzle-based missions, some of which require players to do stuff like decipher Morse code or read the Bible. However, such innovations are continually undermined by the game’s cadre of glitches — incomplete quest descriptions, disappearing objects and the like — that continue to exist even though the MMO went live more than three weeks ago. It’s tough to be forgiving of such bugs, as well as build enthusiasm for investing time and money in “The Secret World” when an online shop stocked with virtual goodies requires real cash for purchase, perhaps foreshadowing that this experience is already headed toward a free-to-play venture. That or the game’s makers are just way too greedy. To be certain, “The Secret World” is an MMO for players more interested in globe-spanning expeditions than gun-toting raids. The player-versus-player zones provide minimal action, and the chances to bombard dungeons are sparse. Unfortunately, those less compelling diversions provide some of the best opportunities to gain ability points and nab the best loot. Despite the shortcomings, “The Secret World” is most certainly an online role-playing game that shouldn’t be kept secret. With its intoxicatingly cerebral blend of haunting landscapes, engaging plots and thoughtful quests that actually require a brain, “The Secret World” is proof that an MMO doesn’t have to be mindless fun. GREGG GILLIS GETS BUSIER AS ELECTRONIC DANCE MUSIC GROWS IN POPULARITY BY BRANDY MCDONNELL ENTERTAINMENT WRITER MCDONNELL@OPUBCO.COM

COVER STORY

W

hether he is playing a massive festival or a modest club, Gregg Gillis prepares for all his concerts the same way. He painstakingly envelopes his laptops in plastic wrap, protecting them from the soaking sweat he inevitably works up bouncing, clapping and dancing through his show even as he triggers hundreds of samples by hand. “I think of it like a boxer like wrapping up his hands. ... As soon as I’m wrapping the laptops, it’s officially showtime,” he said with a laugh in a recent phone interview from his hometown of Pittsburgh. “I’m in show mode, I’m thinking about it, and I like it. It’s like usually I crack open a beer, turn on some tunes, it takes a half-hour to do both computers. It’s a routine that kind of gets me in the mental state, so I don’t think I’m ever gonna switch that up.” While some things remain the same, for Gillis, the mash-up maestro better known as Girl Talk, many aspects of his career as a DJ and remixer just keep getting

bigger and better as electronic dance music surges in popularity. “For five or six years, it was truly underground for me. You know, showing up in cities and playing to five to 30 people, that’s what it was. And then even kind of when it started to take off, it was still kind of more bars-on. I think about it a lot just in terms of festivals, you know, where we’re billed at and these larger stages and who we’re playing up against. A lot of times we’re playing against really big bands,” said Gillis, who opened for Snoop Dogg last weekend at New York City’s Catalpa Festival. “I really haven’t changed my approach that much. I think I’ve worked towards some more accessibility, but how it’s framed and just the size of the shows and all of STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 22

COVER STORY that has definitely gone through the roof. At one point in time, there was all this just like talk of ‘Oh, is the live laptop show like a legitimate thing to go see?’ Whereas now it’s just become kind of like a revolution, not even with my music, just with people doing dubstep or house or whatever, electronic music is just really blowing up. So I think doing what I’m doing, there’s an audience out there and I don’t think it’s as radical as it used to be.” FLAMING SPECTACLE On Thursday, Gillis, 30, will bring his laptop show, which has evolved into a full-blown spectacle, to the Diamond Ballroom. It will be his first Oklahoma City tour stop since he released his acclaimed fifth album “All Day” in December 2010. “Especially in the past year to year and a half, I think the show’s become a lot more orchestrated. ... Prior to 2011, I never really had a touring lighting guy; I never had touring visuals that were entirely synced up to the music or anything like that. So the show for a long period of time was more freeform. And I think that worked well at smaller venues when it was just more of a free-for-all both with the crowd jumping up on stage and with the music, kind of improvising and figuring it out on the spot,” said the well-spoken Gillis, a former biomedical research engineer. “As it’s progressed and as the venues have gotten bigger, I’ve kind of just wanted to tighten it up a bit, so now a lot more rehearsal goes into the set. I kind of have a stronger idea of what I’m gonna do. I think the past year or two we’ve really been working STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 24

to make it a spectacle. You know, I’ve played a lot of these festivals over the years, and I think when I first started playing them, it would just basically be me and the laptop up there and then we’d get some people on stage and that would be it.” Lately, Girl Talk has been featured at major music fests like Bonnaroo and Coachella; he will set sail in December as a headliner on the maiden voyage of the S.S. Coachella Caribbean cruise. On the festival circuit, Gillis has been inspired by a certain merry band of psychedelic Oklahomans with an unabashed penchant for confetti cannons and giant balloon drops: The Flaming Lips. “They’re definitely an inspiration. I’ve seen them a number of times over the years, and in my

opinion, I feel like they’ve just changed the game, especially when you see them at festivals compared to all these other bands. They really are kind of pioneering in terms of just really taking the show and just exploding it. So we’ve definitely kind of taken a page out of that book and tried to do our own spin on it,” Gillis said. “That’s what we’ve been working on, just kind of going as big as we can go and catering it for that festival size. And now it’s like when we do the show in a smaller club environment and we’ve been building it up for those larger crowds and things, I really like that, you know, to kind of compress everything into a smaller space and make it as excessive as possible.”

SAMPLE SIZE If ever an album warranted a full-blown spectacle of a live show, it’s Girl Talk’s “All Day,” an intricate and epic sonic collage of classic rock, hip-hop and pop that easily holds up to dozens of listens. The 71-minute album, which is intended to be heard as a whole piece, features 372 samples from Jay-Z and John Lennon to the Black Eyed Peas and Depeche Mode. He and his label, Illegal Art, released “All Day” as a free download under an “attribution noncommercial” license, which means he cannot profit from the album and has to list the samples. COVER STORY Fans can listen on sites like mashupbreakdown. com and see where Gillis has placed every snippet, sometimes layering as many as five samples. Gillis released his debut album, “Secret Diary,” on Illegal Art in 2002. Like most musicians, he wanted “All Day” to build on the breakthroughs he achieved with his previous records, including his recent acclaimed efforts “Night Ripper” (2006) and “Feed the Animals” (2008). “I always want to raise the bar, and I think in doing this style of music, to me raising the bar, I didn’t want to go in the direction of just adding more samples. You know, ‘The last record had 200 so this one has to have 400.’ You can always just add more stuff and cram in more things, but that doesn’t necessarily make it better or more technical. It just makes it busier,” he said. “With this record, a big goal was just to make it more dynamic. There are parts that are as fast and as quickly edited as anything I’ve ever done, but I also have parts that have more breathing room. I wanted kind of the flow of it to be more unpredictable, where maybe there’d be a 15-second segment that has 30 samples, and then it might transition into something that is a bit slower. And you’re not gonna know kind of the pace or where it’s going.” Using bigger chunks of songs and finding multiple connections between samples also were among his aims in making “All Day.” “In doing this music, the goal for me is always I like it to be technical and evolved, but I want it to flow in a way that if you didn’t know any of these songs it would just sound like a band wrote this as opposed to someone chopping it up on a computer. I want it to just sound as organic as possible. And I think kind of using the larger chunks was moving in that direction for me,” he said. The Pittsburgh native especially relishes taking well-known — some might say overplayed — songs, from Lady Gaga’s “Bad Romance” to U2’s “With or Without You,” and giving them fresh context. Getting there, though, requires plenty of trial and error. “That’s always the goal, to make something that’s transformative, something that becomes a STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 26

new entity. A lot of times it doesn’t work for me. A lot of times I have this sample and I’m working with it, and even when I’m remixing or adding something to it, it’s not going somewhere new in my ears. And if that’s the case, I won’t use it. I won’t use it on record, I won’t use it live. ... Even though these songs are so familiar, I want it to just go somewhere else. I think that is a challenge and that’s part of the fun, too, hearing this thing that you’ve heard a million times and you’re familiar with and it’s just manipulated and forced into this new situation,” he said. “I think it’s kind of at the heart of all music. You know, people use their references and influences and they’re always trying to put a new spin on the past.”

two or three days a week and spend the rest of the time at home working on new music. As a result, his set is continually in flux. “With the show, I’d say now at least half the material’s new ... so the set in itself is just a new kind of piece of music, even though it’s heavily based on the last release. There’s a lot of references to the albums,” he said. “For those people who have followed the project and know the albums well, it’s hopefully kind of exciting ... to see everything wrapped together and remixes of the remix.” With fan expectations for a new album looming, Gillis finds himself at a bit of a creative crossroads. “I don’t want to put together a record until I have an idea of how it’s gonna be different than the last one, how the material’s changing, how it can be better than the last one. Right now ... I would say as far as the loops and samples, I have roughly as much material prepared after the last record as I did going into ‘All Day.’ I’m definitely excited with the new material, how it’s going over in the show and kind of still experimenting with it there. But I haven’t officially started editing it down into a record,” he said. “I’ve also been working on some material that is not intended

for the show, which is the first time I’ve done that in like four or five years. I’ve been working on some other material that’s off to the side that’s sample-based that’s just a little bit different. You know, I have a vision of where I want it to go, but I don’t want to say just yet ‘cause it’s definitely not there. But I’m excited about working on that material, too. It’s kind of been out of the box and a little bit liberating to work on stuff that I’m not concerned with how it’s going to go over in the live show.” STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 28

As it stands, either of those separate sets of new music could evolve into his next album. “I have a lot of new material that kind of relates to the last record and I think is what people would expect the next record to sound like. Simultaneously, I do have this other material that’s just a little bit of a departure ... and it could come <<<

together quicker than the other stuff. If that’s the case, I think the next record could be a little bit of like a left turn,” he said. “I am excited to kind of make that shift and kind of get into something else at some point, I just don’t know if I’m there yet. But I am kind of working towards it.”

Even as he considers taking his music in different directions, Gillis expects some things to stay the same, whether it’s his whirling-dervishmeets-one-man-music-machine performances or even the Glad Wrap swaddling his laptop. “That’s kind of my style: I find what’s working for me, and stick with it.”

TASTE OF ITALY GABRIELLA’S OFFERS A SAMPLE OF KREBS IN HISTORIC OKLAHOMA CITY

or roughly half of Oklahoma’s history, the little town of Krebs has been known as the mecca for Italian food and culture. Now we can get a taste of Krebs without leaving Oklahoma City limits by taking a trip to Gabriella’s Italian Grill and Pizzeria, 1220 NE 63 St. Vicki Muhs’ great uncle was Dominick Giacomo, who founded the Isle of Capri restaurant in 1950. She grew up working in the restaurant while learning to cook at home.

“I wanted to share the food I grew up with, and the best food we made at home,” Vicki said. She put her skills on ice when she and her husband, Duane moved to South Padre Island in Texas close to two decades ago. But the skills and desire never left her. In fact, they bubbled to the surface. “After a few years, my husband could tell I missed cooking so he asked me if I wanted to open a restaurant, and I said ‘Yes,’” Vicki said. “So, we got everything together and opened Gabriella’s on South Padre Island.” The restaurant succeeded for 10 years before the

chance to return to the red dirt of Oklahoma finally presented itself. “We had a great time down in Texas, but we always wanted to come home,” Vicki said. She said her husband’s contracting business and the many opportunities he found in Texas are what took them away in the first place. Vicki is now prepared to share the food of her heritage in her home state. Gabriella’s is not only rooted in Oklahoma history by blood but also by bricks and mortar. It resides in the space last occupied by County Line, but most notoriously by the Kentucky Club, which was known for gambling, shady ladies and scandalous busts. The building first housed the Silver Club in 1935, followed by the Oakcliff Nite Club, then the Kentucky Club in 1939. The building survived those raids, a major fire and Father Time, though the last was part of the reason the County Line closed in 2010 after a three-decade run. The building was in a poor state when the Muhs family took over, but having an experienced contractor as a patriarch has obvious advantages. “My husband did a great job on this place,” Vicki said. “The place was in pretty bad shape.” Once through the door, it’s immediately apparent the place has been overhauled. A new deli counter is a few paces south of the entry, decorated with faux grapevine. The private booths are still in place, as is the central dining area. The place still has enough creaks to remind you you’re walking through a historic building, but the bar area is where the most notable upgrade was performed. The kitchen resides to the east and the bar spans the western wall of the bar area. Both point guests toward the impressive view of tree-laden eastern Oklahoma City and the Capitol dome peaking over the treetops in the south. The bar also has its own exterior entrance to the west, and a patio is outside the southeast corner of the restaurant. The remodel is remarkable. But Duane isn’t the only family member pitching in. Son Mike makes all the sausage from his own recipe, daughter Ashton Gabriella is not only the restaurant’s namesake but chief pizza maker, and son Brandon works on the business and marketing side. This family-owned and operated Italian restaurant looks poised to carve a niche among the city’s familystyle Italian restaurants. Vicki’s four-page dinner menu includes pastas, pizza, steaks, seafood, salads and all the things you expect from an Italian restaurant with tables checkered in red and white. And then there’s a few things you’ll find you might not expect — like 29 beers on tap. “My son is a craft beer fanatic,” Vicki said. Add a rock-solid wine selection and you’ve got a stop where the whole family walks away satiated and satisfied. For lunch, the menu is pared down, offering pizza, sandwiches, and salads. Aside from the house-made sausage and bread, Ashton’s pizzas are cooked in a new wood-burning oven built in Italy. And if you don’t believe me, ask for a kitchen-side table and watch the Muhs clan and crew do their nightly dinner dance. On a trip for lunch I tried a wonderful sausage soup and excellent pizza. The homemade bread was tasty and the service on point. Gabriella’s is a great new addition to our local restaurant scene, and one of a very few places where you can eat a slice of pizza and get a slice of history on the house.
