HONEYLARK FORMER GREEN CORN REVIVAL-ISTS RYAN AND NATALIE HOUCK TAKE FLIGHT S TO R Y O N PAG E 2 4
from the editor

GEORGE L ANG
n March 28, less than two weeks after seeing Natalie and Ryan Houck perform with Green Corn Revival at this year’s South By Southwest in Austin, Texas, I received the following and completely unexpected e-mail: “Ryan and I wanted to let you all know that our last show as part of Green Corn Revival is this Saturday,” Natalie wrote. “We have made the decision to move on with our own project ... We can’t wait to share our new music with you, and the name of our project, very soon! We have deeply appreciated your help and business relationship with GCR and hope sincerely to continue that friendship with you in our new endeavors!” The fact that the Houcks were playing one last gig with GCR indicated that it was an amicable parting, which is always a comfort to fans. But whenever a band undergoes division, the people who went to the shows and bought the albums always face that question, like Robert Redford in “The Candidate”: What do we do now? Two weeks later, the Houcks had a name for their band, Honeylark, and listed their Web site, www.honeylark.com, along with Twitter and Facebook information. In my cover story on page 24, I talk to the Houcks about their upcoming July 27 show at VZD’s, 4200 N Western, and the process of developing their hypnotic new sound. It’s never easy starting a new band, but I’m certain that many GCR fans will be there, curious to experience the BY GEORGE LANG LOOKATOKC EDITOR first step in the Houcks’ new direction. GLANG@OPUBCO.COM But even as Honeylark begins, I’m BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ equally interested in how Jared and Jacy STATICBLOG Deck will move forward with Green Corn Revival’s music. The Decks are incredibly gifted musicians and nice people, and I eagerly await their next step. If you spend enough time listening to music and watching bands, you get used to breakups, lineup shifts, solo projects and other prismatic divisions. I immensely enjoyed Green Corn Revival every time I saw them, but it was a constantly evolving band — there were different players on stage nearly every time I saw the group. So change seems to be part of this equation. And as LOOKatOKC follows the Houcks’ new music, we look forward to hearing more of the fresh crop of Green Corn Revival music Deck and his bandmates played at SXSW.

Small labels, big sounds
T
here are two stages at The Mohawk bar in Austin, Texas. One’s a double-tiered, open-air patio you can easily squeeze a few hundred people into. The other’s a dingy closet that condenses ricocheting sounds until the audience stuffed inside it cries uncle. The latter was the site of the most brutal sonic beatdown I suffered at this year’s South By Southwest festival, administered by a quartet of scrawny, early-20s kids from Cleveland, Ohio. That band was Cloud Nothings, and they played an especially weighty, dour take on the blazing-fast, lo-fi punk rock from their latest record, “Attack on Memory,” that afternoon at the Mohawk, their singer Dylan Baldi lacerating his vocal cords over the same issues of trust and youth despondence that Bob Mould (who would play the outdoor stage nearly an hour later, with Baldi watching) once did as the frontman of Hüsker Dü. Now almost halfway through 2012 a bumper crop of excellent small-label rock records has sprouted up to join “Attack on Memory,” revealing a crew of young songwriters drawing influence from all over the rock and roll spectrum: Tom Petty radio classics, MC5-like proto-punk, and even ’80s college rock champions like The Replacements. Here are five standouts in the order they were released, and a couple more records to look out for as bonus.
CLOUD NOTHINGS — “ATTACK ON MEMORY” (CARPARK RECORDS) “Attack on Memory”’s entire ethos gets laid out during the lumbering sonic crashes of “No Sentiment,” its sixth track. “We forget what you do / We don’t care what we lose” reads like some nihilistic pop lyric, but the rest of the album suggests Baldi’s only given up on hope, not meaning altogether. “I need something to do /Somewhere to go” he yearns on “Stay Useless,” the song that betrays that Cloud Nothings are capable of parting and revealing some sunshine. THE MEN — “OPEN YOUR HEART” (SACRED BONES RECORDS) The Men were the other band on this list that I got to catch at this year’s SXSW, and they wrote a really scary love song in their latest album’s title track. Over hard-mashed, distorted guitar hooks Mark Perro informs the object of his affections that “there are no mirrors here / do what you want / be who you want to be,” but makes it clear that escape isn’t an option: “Even if she says no, I won’t let go.” Yikes. And while his voice bears little semblance to the late Alex Chilton, “Candy” draws Big Star’s agreeable guitar tones and radio-single subject matter to produce a winner. SCREAMING FEMALES — “UGLY” (DON GIOVANNI RECORDS) Marissa Paternoster twists her voice into all sorts of gnarled shapes, aggressively shifting from shrill to husky before launching into some awe-inspiring solo guitar play. But those who turn away from the Females’ fifth album early will fail to realize her voice is also capable of great beauty, cooing over violins on the album’s final track, “It’s Nice.” Of the albums collected here, Paternoster’s the most distinct

and dexterous musician: She’s Jack White unhinged on the guitar and a mental patient bellowing vibrato into the microphone all at once, much more than just a welcome replacement to the now-defunct Sleater-Kinney. JAPANDROIDS — “CELEBRATION ROCK” (POLYVINYL RECORD CO.) It’s going to be tough to cheer against these dudes for album of the year, so I think I may just not even bother trying. “Celebration Rock is chock-full of top-of-the-mountain-reaching classic-rock lyrics (I actually caught myself shouting “Take it easy, baby / Make it last all night” after Brian King’s and David Prowse’s “Oooh yeah! Alright!” hook on “Evil’s Sway”), but that’s not to say it’s sentimental for the ’70s — just the hard-charging, hard-drinking duo’s early twenties. “Remember when we had them on the run / and the night when we saw the midnight sun?” King asks on “Younger Us.” Somewhere, Bruce Springsteen’s got both fists in the air. TY SEGALL BAND — “SLAUGHTERHOUSE” (IN THE RED RECORDS) Recorded in just three days in February of this year, “Slaughterhouse” introduced us to a new side of Ty Segall, a 24-year-old whose output is so prolific as to warrant the release of last year’s 25-track “Singles (2007-2010).” Now, in 2012 he’s welded his endearing sketchbook lyrics (see: “Fuzzy Cat”) onto some distorted, Stooges-inspired bluespunk to terrifying effect. “Tell Me What’s Inside Your Heart” stands out in particular, its cooing Lennon melody rattled by Wayne Kramer guitar solos. And while you’re at it, here’s a handful of other records due out this year that fit the bill: Jeff the Brotherhood — “Hypnotic Nights; Bob Mould — “Silver Age; The Vaccines — “The Vaccines Come of Age;” Thee Oh Sees — “Putrifiers II.”

Tales from behind the bar
I
have quite a few friends in the food service industry, bartenders especially, so I hear a lot of the frustrations they have with patrons. While I listen to my friends discuss how ridiculous a person is trying to wave them down like they are invisible until they wave their magic hand or listening to the indecisive person make a drink order when there are about 100 other people waiting for a drink, I find myself committing some of the same crimes. Jeff Cole has been serving up cocktails for years working at Red Prime Steak, the Mantle and now Local so I decided to get an etiquette lesson in bartending from a man with experience.

you may be better served with delivering an apology. A tip isn’t a substitute for decency. “This drink isn’t strong enough.” First of all, as a rule, this is a warning sign to any responsible bartender. Every respectable establishment has a set pour that is policy. If you want a stronger drink, order a double next time. At any rate, calling a bartender out for a “weak” pour isn’t the best way to start off. “Your [insert body part here] is [insert comment here].” Bartenders are essentially on stage. This makes us used to being watched. But comments on physical attributes are generally perceived as creepy. Telling that cute girl bartender that her hips are a gift from God probably won’t get you anything but ignored. Keep those comments and phone numbers to yourself. “Can I get a free drink?” No.
THINGS TO NEVER SAY TO YOUR EXTREMELY BUSY BARTENDER
“Hey, bartender!” I know, I know. How else do you get our attention!? I promise, all there is to it is to belly up to the bar and have nothing in front of you. This also excludes whistling, waving currency in the air, and slapping the bar. Bartender: “What can I get for you?” You to your friends: “Hey, everybody, I got the bartender. Whadday’all want?” No one will blame the bartender for simply skipping you and your friends to move on to the next guy. Get the order together before hand and if you’re really helpful, you’ll try to keep it halfway coordinated. “What’s good here?” The short answer: everything. Take advantage of that bar menu. If they don’t have one, stick to the basics. “Can you make a [insert complex offthe-drink menu item] here?” I said the basics! I understand you really are craving that frozen margarita or whatever else you can think up. Have some empathy for everyone in the bar and keep it simple. Oh, and that slick new Mad Men classic cocktail app you downloaded to your mobile device? Don’t be that guy. “Smile!” Trust me, we’re all smiling on the inside. After all, who doesn’t like making money? This is an intense part of our evening and its game-face time. And for some reason, this single word — and I know my colleagues agree — makes the opposite happen.

I hate being limited to three, but you can’t have everything. For the sake of America, I’ll keep it to American beverages. Old Fashioned (1800s) This is the quintessential American cocktail. With its documented roots reaching back to the 1880s (the Bourbon Old Fashioned), this drink contains the original four ingredients constituting a cocktail as defined originally in 1806 in a publication from Hudson, NY. These guidelines include spirit, bitters, sugar, and water.
THINGS TO NEVER SAY TO YOUR BARTENDER EVER
Ramos Gin Fizz (1888) Created in New Orleans, this drink was extremely popular from its creation and for the next 60 years. Originally it took 12 minutes to make one drink.

Brandy Crusta (1852) Also created in New Orleans but much earlier, this cocktail is one of the first documented cases of balancing sweet and sour flavors in a drink. Hundreds of drinks have spawned from this recipe including the sidecar, the cosmopolitan, and even the margarita. When properly constructed, this drink will take at least four minutes to make by even the most practiced bartender. Good luck finding one in town, though. I only know maybe three bars capable of recreating it.

THINGS EVERYONE SHOULD KNOW ABOUT BARTENDING
Bartending is a more than century-old occupation. That being said, there are all kinds of bartenders and bars. Not every bartender works for a bar that is set up to make anything you want. Not every bartender has the knowledge or experience to fall back on to come up with something best suited to your palate. Order accordingly. When you do find that talented keeper, don’t squander your experience by ordering a common lager. We want you to have a memorable experience. Take advantage of it: We want you to have a safe and fun time! We are on your side and are willing to do as much as we can to make you happy. With that in mind, remember, half of our job is making sure you get home safe.

CRAZY STORY TOLD BY THIS BARTENDER
When you have a job like this, there are a million stories you could share, but
most aren’t considered PG. The first one that comes to mind was when I was working for a fine dining restaurant. This is important because on our back bar (the area behind the bartender where the bottles are kept on display) we kept several super-premium spirits. So imagine me, my bar-back (kind of an assistant bartender) and two wellto-do couples winding down and eating dinner on a weekday evening. Two young gentlemen come strolling into the bar area that I immediately pin as homeless. The two couples eating are noticeably perturbed. I greet the guys, “Hey, how are you two this evening?” “Aw, pretty good, man. Say, do you carry Louis XIII?” they ask. I reply, “Sure, it runs about $150 an ounce, though.” “Alright man, give me two two-ounce shots,” one guy says. Taken aback, I pour the shots, carefully measuring each drop. “I really need you to pay first, if that’s OK.” The guy then lays out a couple thousand in twenties. In the end, they ended up buying three shots apiece. With tax that comes to around $2,000. All of this happened in the space of an hour. I don’t usually discuss tip, but I made roughly .0025 or .25 percent. Totally worth it for this, though. I wouldn’t trade it for anything, especially the look on the couples’ faces.

‘SWING LO MAGELLAN’ – DIRTY PROJECTORS
ave Longstreth’s neat trick with Dirty Projectors is finding tiny patches of common ground, those sweet spots in the Venn diagram where Led Zeppelin and Rick Ross bob their heads in unison and David Byrne and Beyonce share a tender moment. This was not always the case: Until Dirty Projectors’ spectacular 2009 breakthrough, “Bitte Orca,” Longstreth was hardly the aesthetic peacemaker, creating odd-duck rock operas about Don Henley and covering Black Flag’s “Rise Above” from sense memory. But “Swing Lo Magellan” not only continues Dirty Projectors’ trend of playing nice along popular music’s demarcation lines, it does so without being audibly nervous about it — compared to “Bitte Orca,” “Swing Lo Magellan” sounds surprisingly comfortable about
its mission. Consider the opening “Offspring are Blank,” which commences with humming that sounds like Frank Oz’s Muppets voices and a flurry of hand claps before giving way to tight Brian Wilsonstyle harmonies and an SUV-rattling bass line. And before Longstreth’s keening tenor pipes up with “Once there was a single one/ then there were 10,” he actually can be heard clearing his throat. Before “Offspring are Blank” hits the 2-minute mark, what was once esoteric is just rocking out tremendously: heavy metal guitars and four-part harmonies, together again. From there, Dirty Projectors break out the funk as Longstreth rhapsodizes about “hoodlum love” on “About to Die” and powers the first single, “Gun Has No Trigger,” with a New Jack Swing beat worthy of Teddy Riley. Time and again, “Swing Lo Magellan”
impresses by taking musical feats of stunning clarity — the intricate “high life” guitar figures on the environmental nightmare ballad “Just From Chevron,” for instance -— and leaving just enough fingerprints on the final product to show that real humans were involved. The results are surprisingly warm and endearing: on “The Socialites,” Amber LOOKATOKC.COM
Coffman continues the winning weirdodiva style she mined on the “Bitte Orca” single “Stillness is the Move” and even makes sly reference to a Dirty Projectors motif by asking, midsong on “Unto Caesar,” “When should we bust out into harmony?” The answer is simple on “Swing Lo Magellan”: as often as possible. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

band’s own sax-honking, runaway train of a rant against narcissism, “Mirror in the Bathroom.” They could get heated up politically, too, trashing Thatcherism with the acid-spitting “Stand Down Margaret.” “Wha’ppen” was a little less frenetic — and a little less engaging — as the band branched out into a wider assortment of world music styles, calypso and Mediterranean rhythms and reggae. But “Special Beat Service” found them regaining their footing with sleeker, more pop-oriented, MTV-friendly tunes such as “I Confess” and “Save It for Later.” After that, the members of the Beat felt they had exhausted the limited possibilities of their hybrid style, and vocalist-guitarist Dave Wakeling and vocalist Ranking Roger moved on to form General Public while guitarist Andy Cox and bassist David Steele turned into Fine Young Cannibals.

‘THE TARNISHED GOLD’ – BEACHWOOD SPARKS
purred on by a 2008 reunion at Sub Pop Records’ 20th anniversary celebration, Beachwood Sparks make things more permanent with “The Tarnished Gold,” the psychedelic country-rock band’s first album in 11 years. The most obvious evolution since 2001’s “Once We Were Trees” is that the band’s songwriting and performances are less idiosyncratic but far stronger. While singer Chris Gunst’s vocals were formerly a love-or-hate proposition, the band perfectly executes these AM radio slide-guitar ballads on an album that improves on “Once We Were Trees” at every level. Guitarist Dave Scher’s impeccable lapsteel work sets the sunny tone on the opening ballad “Forget the Song” and powers the self-referential uptempo track “Sparks Fly Again.” Occasionally,
the more aggressive psych-pop stance Scher and drummer Jimi Hey took with All Night Radio, their post-Beachwood Sparks project, comes out on meditative space-rock anthems such as “Mollusk” and “Leave That Light On,” but most of “The Tarnished Gold” has a firm foundation in the California countryrock pioneered by Gram Parsons. While Beachwood Sparks once sounded like a left-field throwback, the success of freak-folk bands such as Fleet Foxes and Band of Horses in the intervening years created a safe harbor for “The Tarnished Gold” — the campfire jamboree bluegrass of “The Orange Grass Special” and Southern rock redux on “Earl Jean” make perfect sense these days. Also, after Beachwood Sparks’ honey-toned 2001 cover of Sade’s “By Your Side” earned a second life on the “Scott Pilgrim vs. The World” soundtrack, it reminded a lot of
people of this band’s unusual, off-kilter beauty, and “The Tarnished Gold” is LOOKATOKC.COM

Grisly ‘Savages’ goes deep into drug war drama
I
t takes some obvious narrative shortcuts and contains a nearly unforgivable fake-out climax, but Oliver Stone’s “Savages” is the director’s most engaged and energetic film in many years. This hard-boiled, blood-soaked melodrama about love and revenge among drug merchants maintains a nasty tension level and gives its actors all the scenery they can chew. Chon and Ben (Taylor Kitsch and Aaron Johnson) are best friends who made a fortune selling the most popular and potent marijuana in Southern California, a bumper crop grown from seeds Chon brought back after his tour of duty in Afghanistan. Ben is the sensitive, altruistic humanist who wants to parlay their fortune into sustainable energy and charitable acts, while Chon is the muscle of the operation and perfectly happy with maintaining status quo. The spoils of success include a sprawling oceanfront mansion in Laguna Beach and the devotion of
rich Orange County beach girl Ophelia (Blake Lively), who goes by “O” and is completely committed to this conflict-free love triangle. But then the Baja Cartel comes calling with a business proposal that is more like a shakedown. Chon and Ben reject the deal proposed by the advance team (Demian Bichir and Antonio Jaramillo) and make plans to skip the country, but then the cartel led by the elegant and ruthless Elena (Salma Hayek) attempts to force the boys’ hands by kidnapping O. “Savages” is an apt title, an epithet that nearly everyone uses against one another, including Elena’s chief enforcer Ludo (Benicio Del Toro) and crooked drug enforcement agent Dennis (John Travolta). Stone and fellow screenwriters Shane Salerno and Don Winslow create a queasy balance of savagery and amorality between Elena and her American competition as Chon and Ben begin to fight on the same vicious level as the cartel. Obviously, Elena and her underlings are the aggressors, but everyone gets
dragged into the viscera. What keeps “Savages” from total success is an oppressive voice-over by Lively that is laden with cheesy portent and mixed-bag literary references that seem too worldly for the character — it feels as tacked on as Harrison Ford’s postproduction “Blade Runner” narration. And then Stone deploys the aforementioned plot switcheroo at the climax: viewers who have seen either version of “Funny Games” will recognize the technique as a variation on what Michael Haneke did in those films, and identify it as a big-time cop-out. But beyond these problems, “Savages” is a surprisingly effective ride most notable for its off-thecharts pulp-style acting, including Hayek’s imperious Elena and memorably sleazy turns by Del Toro and Travolta. “Savages” is raw, but thanks to these fully invested performances, it’s a psycho killer.

‘Part of Me’ falls short of star’s colorful persona
L
ike or loathe her music and image, Katy Perry is unquestionably one of the most colorful figures in contemporary popular music, and not just because of her penchant for peppermint-striped dresses and neon-hued hairstyles. So there’s just no excuse for making any movie about her as boring as “Katy Perry: Part of Me,” the longest 95 minutes I’ve spent in the theater in a long time. In the interest of full disclosure, I’m nowhere close to a Katy Cat or even a casual fan of Perry’s vapid earworms; I’m clearly outside her target demographic, but to me, her music comes across as artificially sweet and sonically satisfying as a vat of candy corn. As a parent, her obsession with looking and acting 16 at the age of 27 is a bit disturbing, while her aggressive marketing of her candy-coated, hyper-sexualized persona to girls as young as 4 is downright alarming. Though devotees will undoubtedly enjoy each insider interview with “Team Perry,” every meet-and-greet scene of the pop star charming her fans and all the glitter-strewn concert tidbits in between — particularly if they couldn’t get tickets to the real live shows — “Part of Me” just doesn’t have enough compelling moments. And it waits too late to show them, to appeal to any but the singer’s most loyal followers. With “Part of Me,” Perry joins the trend of pop stars becoming the subject of 3-D concert films, which combine footage of big-budget onstage theatrics, behind-the- scenes vignettes and “Behind the Music”-style back story and personal drama. While it’s a relatively new subgenre, it apparently only took the <<<

blockbuster success of “Hannah Montana: The Best of Both Worlds,” “Justin Bieber: Never Say Never” and the like for the tween- and teen-friendly formula of peppy music and eye-popping spectacle, backstage moments and inspirational storylines to become as fixed as concrete. “Part of Me” trails Perry on her 2011 “California Dreams Tour,” a grueling yearlong trek across the United States, Europe, South America and Asia that sold out more than 124 arena dates and earned spots on Pollstar’s and Billboard’s top tours of last year. Over the course of the arduous journey, Perry ascended to lofty professional highs — most notably becoming the first woman and first recording artist since Michael Jackson to score five No. 1 hits from one album — but then plunged into a terrible personal low when her fledgling marriage to comedian/actor Russell Brand disintegrated. Since every human who has an interest in modern music and access to a television, radio or Internetenabled device already knows this story, “Part of Me” offers a prime opportunity to explore creative ways of telling it, especially with Perry’s quirky geek-chic personality and visually astonishing concert set pieces to frame it. Instead, the concert film follows practically every convention straight down the line. With all the most obvious concert clips popping up in all the most obvious places, the movie runs through Perry’s ultraconservative Pentecostal Christian childhood, her desire from a young age to perform, her attempt at mounting a career as a contemporary Christian singer at age 15,

her break away from gospel music and organized religion and her move to Los Angeles. It lingers far too long over her struggles to find a label team willing to let her be herself (as opposed to a variation of Britney Spears or Avril Lavigne) and make the brand of fun, bubbly, good-girl-gone-a-bit-bad pop she envisioned. While it’s clearly meant to establish Perry as an inspirational fighter determined to make her music her way, this part of the narrative stalls to the point that little girls attending Monday’s preview screening weren’t just fidgeting in their seats, they were out of them entirely. By the end, the movie regains its momentum and dramatic arc as Perry exhausts herself by spending off days flying back to the U.S. to spend time with Brand, who is pointedly absent from most of the film. Even the loudest of detractors can’t help but feel empathy and admiration as the soon-to-be-divorced singer breaks down before a sold-out show in Brazil, weeping uncontrollably until her team tells her she has to either cancel the concert or get in her first costume now. “Todd, get started,” she chokes out, letting her makeup artist fix her up, only to start crying again right before taking the stage, bending low at the waist and aiming her tears at the ground so as not to muss her false eyelashes. If nothing else, “Part of Me” proves that Perry knows how to craft a first-rate concert spectacle, complete with 3-D-friendly costume quick-changes, aerialists and Candyland backdrops, with a whipped cream cannon and confetti on top. It’s a shame the movie isn’t as interesting as the scenery or the subject. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘Intouchables’ gets in touch with real emotions
O
ne of the biggest French box office hits in years and it’s easy to see why, Eric Toledano and Olivier Nakache’s “The Intouchables” is an ingratiating and ultimately irresistible comedy, a movie that looks like it’s going for maximum emotional manipulation but comes across as genuine thanks to great performances by Francois Cluzet and Omar Sy. Philippe (Cluzet of “Tell No One”) is a stupendously wealthy man who hit a bad luck streak, losing his wife to a terminal illness and then suffering spinal injury in a freak accident. When he and his assistant, Magalie (Audrey Fleurot), interview potential caregivers, the applicants are bland functionaries. Philippe needs constant care to stave off atrophy and the myriad other maladies that can impact a paralyzed man, but he is put off by the morose men looking for work.
Then a tough Senegalese immigrant named Driss (Sy) shows up, looking to just have his application rejected so he can collect unemployment. Driss is unrehearsed and not eager to impress, ready to get his paper stamped and go away. Instead, Philippe offers him the job, partly as a challenge to the young and directionless man from the Parisian projects, but also as a challenge to his own regimented life. “The Intouchables” carries all the warning signs of being a “Driving Miss Daisy” update, a cloying oversimplification of race relations that provides easy but trite solutions to societal divides. But this is all about execution and chemistry — Cluzet and Sy each deliver magnetic, sympathetic performances using entirely different skill sets. Cluzet is remarkably expressive given the limitations of his character’s movement, while Sy derives his power from a kinetic, force-ofnature presence.
There are scenes in “The Intouchables” that desperately need trimming or outright omission, particularly a dance sequence in which Driss teaches stiff, rich people the joys of dancing to Earth Wind & Fire — it’s almost a deal-breaker, a moment when Toledano and Nakache overplay their hands and do a “Big Chill” dishwashing-to-the-oldies scene. But given the story and the circumstances of the characters, it’s a wonder that “The Intouchables” is able to feel as genuine as it does for 90 percent of its running time. “The Intouchables” has all the earmarks of a sleeper hit, mainly because it offers a satisfying emotional arc without force-feeding those emotions. There is an inescapable joy in seeing actors hit a rhythm, and Cluzet and Sy deserve great credit for taking what could have been stock characters and giving them unexpected life.

‘Quantum Conundrum’ blinds with science
D
isc-based video games, the ones that cost $60 and come in a plastic box, may be heading the way of the VHS cassette and the eight-track tape. Many industry pundits believe that by 2020, if not sooner, you’ll download all your games — just as you do now with music and smartphone apps. Right now, though, the download-only market is still somewhat of a laboratory for game designers who want to experiment with new ideas. And no lab is wackier than the one you’ll visit in “Quantum Conundrum” (Square Enix, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $15). Kim Swift, the lead designer of “Quantum Conundrum,” was the mastermind behind the 2007 classic “Portal,” and fans of that puzzle game will feel right at home. Professor Fitz Quadwrangle has discovered a way to switch among four dimensions with unusual physics. The “fluffy” and “heavy” dimensions make objects, respectively, lighter and heavier; you can also slow down time or reverse gravity. In each of the rooms in “Quantum Conundrum,” your mission is to use your primary tool, the Interdimensional Shift Device, to escape. For example, you may need to put a safe on a pressure-sensitive plate — but you have to make the safe fluffy to pick it up, then make it heavy to drop it on the target. By the final levels, you’ll be frantically juggling all four dimensions. Quadwrangle, voiced by “Star Trek” veteran John de Lancie, is sarcastic but not quite as malevolent as “Portal” villain GLaDOS, and the jokes here aren’t as sharp. But the puzzles themselves are every bit as clever. Rating: 3 stars out of four.

“Spelunky” (Mossmouth, for the Xbox 360, $15) is one of the friendliest-looking games on Microsoft’s Xbox Live Arcade, with an adorably stout hero who will remind you of a certain lovable plumber. But once you take a few steps into its mysterious mines, you’ll realize this is one of the nastiest games ever created. Each level is a two-dimensional maze filled with treasure, traps and monsters. Some traps will kill you outright; others will nibble away at your health. It’s fairly easy to survive the first few levels, but you will eventually die. And there are no saves or checkpoints in “Spelunky” — every defeat sends you back to the very beginning. Success in “Spelunky” requires playing each group of mazes over and over until you discover a way to tunnel through. The levels are randomly generated, so you don’t see quite the same thing every time — but after dozens of fruitless trips, they start to blur. Deaths are frequent and cheap, and escape feels too often like a matter of luck. Some of the more hardcore gamers I know are raving about the unforgiving difficulty of “Spelunky,” but I found it tedious and even somewhat mean-spirited. Rating: 2 stars Telltale Games’ video-game adaptation of the zombie graphic-novel series “The Walking Dead” (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $5 per episode) has been much more compelling than the AMC series based on the same material. Episode two, “Starved for Help,” finds the survivors holed up in a motel and running out of food. But when aid arrives, you have to make some tough decisions about whom to trust. “The Walking Dead” isn’t a zombie shooting gallery like “Dead Island” or “Left 4 Dead.” Instead, it’s a thoughtfully paced drama in which the still-living humans can be just as dangerous as the undead ones, and every act of violence is surrounded by ambiguous moral choices. With three episodes still to come, I’m dying to find out where these characters end up, which is more than I can say about the stiffs on the TV show. — From The Associated Press

‘Spider-Man’ exciting when above Manhattan
I
t’s been five years since SpiderMan’s previous appearance in movie theaters, but Marvel’s webslinger has been plenty busy on video-game consoles. Since 2007, he’s headlined four games and made guest appearances in at least four more. None of them has been particularly outstanding. Fans have been hoping that a new movie Spidey might reinvigorate the video-game franchise. But while the Quebecbased developer Beenox has given “The Amazing Spider-Man” (**, Activision, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $59.99) some new tricks, it still feels a little threadbare. Moviegoers beware: The game takes place after the events of the latest film, and it blithely spoils a couple of major plot points. The upshot is that a few more humananimal hybrids (like the movie’s villain, the Lizard) have escaped from the labs of Oscorp Industries. Meanwhile, robotics whiz Alistaire Smythe has shifted Oscorp’s research focus, creating an army of mechanical behemoths to take down the mutants. Spider-Man, being somewhat of a hybrid himself, is stuck in the middle. Spider-Man’s duels against Smythe’s robots and familiar comic-book villains like the Rhino, the Iguana and the Scorpion provide the noisy, somewhat predictable spectacles you would expect in a superhero game. But the main story also includes missions in which Spidey has to infiltrate various Oscorp facilities. You need to carefully plan your attacks here, taking out Oscorp
guards one by one so they don’t gang up on you. The gameplay is reminiscent of “Batman: Arkham Asylum,” but it’s frequently marred by awkward camera angles that make it difficult to spot your enemies before they spot you. “The Amazing Spider-Man” becomes exciting only when you step outside its main story and take to the skies. Swinging between the skyscrapers of Manhattan is exhilarating, and the new “web rush” feature, which lets you pinpoint your next goal and zip right to it, is very handy when you’re trying to find the stray comic-book pages hidden all over town. Spidey’s aerial acrobatics are so thrilling it’s a shame they aren’t better integrated into its story. There’s plenty to discover in “The Amazing Spider-Man,” but it falls short of being the truly inspired adventure fans have been anticipating. “The Dark Knight Rises” is due at the multiplex in just a few weeks, but the Christian Bale version of Batman won’t be getting a video-game doppelganger. Instead, fans of the Caped Crusader can enjoy “Lego Batman 2: DC Super Heroes” (***, WB Games, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, $49.99), a more lighthearted, familyfriendly romp. The designers at the U.K.-based Traveller’s Tales have hit upon a successful formula: Take Lego-ized versions of beloved characters like Harry Potter and the “Star Wars” gang. Set them loose in brightly colored versions of familiar settings where they can destroy the furniture and build new devices out of Lego blocks. Throw in some clever but not too challenging puzzles and enough collectibles to keep the kids busy for weeks. “Lego Batman 2” adds a few new elements, most notably some first-rate voice acting, that energizes the confrontations between Bruce Wayne and a rogue’s gallery of villains. (And other heroes, too: Batman’s surly attitude toward Superman is hilarious.) Also, the game world is more open than usual, so you can freely explore Gotham City in between story missions. There are dozens of playable characters as well as an assortment of suits that give Batman and Robin special powers. — From The Associated Press

that defies harsh weather Lii nd L n a Miller | For The Oklah ahom o an
Oklahoma’s summer weather can deliver a nasty blow to your hair and hairstyle. Blame it on the dreaded triple Hs — heat, humidity and harsh winds. One or all can pump up the volume on frizzies, dry locks and split ends or turn those morningperfect loose waves into a limp mess before noon. Luckily, you can look to the catwalk for a couple of stylish options. Slicked-back hair and hair wraps were all over the runways for spring. The wet look is just that — hair that looks wet and slicked back, either in a low ponytail or bun or worn stick straight. Hair wraps were shown twisted and tied like a turban or headband, as well as wrapped around the head in a nod to boho. Continued on next page

FRIZZIES Satin pillowcases allow the hair to glide, instead of roughing up the texture by rubbing hair against moisture-zapping cotton. Satin pillowcases also help avoid split ends. Shampoo less frequently. Use a shampoo designed to tame curly, unruly hair and condition hair every time you shampoo. Use a deep conditioner once a week and a leave-in conditioner as needed. Recommended products include Smoothing Shampoo and Conditioner, Smoothing Repair deep conditioner, and 7 Seconds Leave In, all by Unite. Tame unruly frizz and lock out moisture on humid days with products like U Luxury Argan Oil and anti-humectant D Frizz Argan Spray. Do not rub wet hair. Squeeze or pat dry hair from scalp to ends. Wear a scarf on windy days to avoid frizz. Minimize heat usage and keep those split ends trimmed. — Greg Welchel, co-owner of Trichology Salon

ix months ago, Natalie and Ryan Houck were still incubating the atmospheric, country-noir music of Honeylark, trying to chart their next steps as musical collaborators, when Natalie took their two children to the park and found inspiration for the band’s name in an unexpected place. “I love birds — I really love owls, but I’m crazy about all kinds of birds,” she said. “My kids and I found a dead bird in the park, and it upset them. They didn’t understand it, and I was trying to explain to them that death is just a part of life and it can even be beautiful.” In an effort to capture that sad beauty, Natalie Houck took a photograph of the bird. Over the course of the next week, her children kept asking to see the picture. S TO R Y C O N T I N U E S O N PAG E 2 6

STORY CONTINUED FROM PAGE 25 And I thought, ‘What am I doing? I’m macabreing out my little children,’” the singer said, laughing. That image proved difficult to shake for all of them, and soon Natalie and guitarist-producer Ryan were free associating, trying to pair the image of the bird with something that sounded sweet. And I thought, ‘Sugarbird!’” she said. “And Ryan was like, ‘No...’” Molasses did not work, either, and less said about sorghum, the better. “Then he said, ‘What about Honeylark?’” she said. “I just knew that was it.” In retrospect, it made sense that the band’s

name came after having to explain change and mortality, since Honeylark marks a shift in the Houcks’ musical career. In March, following a successful performance by Green Corn Revival at Austin’s South By Southwest, the husbandand-wife musicians parted ways with the Weatherford-based cowpunk/countrypolitan band they formed with singer-songwriter Jared Deck in 2009. They relocated to Oklahoma City, and began concentrating on the swooning ballads and haunting imagery of Honeylark, finding inspiration in Nick Cave’s murder ballads and the hazy, humid production style of T Bone Burnett. The three-plus years the Houcks spent with Green Corn Revival resulted in the 2010 debut album “Say You’re a Sinner,” a collection of time-

less “big sky” country crossed with the energy of classic cowpunk groups such as the True Believers, X and Lone Justice. The band debuted strong new material at its South By Southwest performance, which made the Houcks’ departure more surprising. And yet, many of the songs posted as rough mixes on Honeylark’s Facebook page, including “Love is Red,” “Chlorophyll” and “Bones,” date back nearly half a decade. “It had been coming for quite a while,” said Ryan Houck. “We had been getting more and more excited about doing our material that we had been working on and had tried to work on integrating STORY CONTINUES ON PAGE 27

it into CGR, but it was just not really happening. We had been trying to fit a square peg into a round hole with that.” Honeylark, featuring the Houcks and fellow flock members Kenny Holloway, Caleb Creed, Justin Ransford and Wally Tarkington, makes its live debut at 10 p.m. July 27 at VZD’s, 4200 N Western. While the band is currently working on an album, Natalie Houck said they are only committing to a release date “sometime in 2013.” “The majority of what will make it onto this first album is newer, and it’s been morphing into what you hear now for awhile,” Natalie Houck said. That wide berth for Honeylark’s recording debut is due, in part, to the rhythms of the band’s creative process. Some songs gestate for months as the Houcks try to find the right mood and final melodic and thematic direction. “And sometimes, we’ll write it on the porch, record it on my phone and bring it to practice two days later,” Ryan Houck said. Honeylark plans to maintain a busy performance schedule, including an Aug. 18 date at the Blue Note Lounge, while they continue to write and record new music. Natalie Houck said she has a concept for how these live performances will go: sweet but mysterious, like the group’s name. “You know, this is all in my head and I hope it works out this way,” she said. “But I think my fantasy for it is the perfect marriage between a folk performer who talks to you and connects with the audience on a really human, friendly level, and a dark rock show, where you’re kind of mesmerized.”
