All about the ‘love’
A
s a term of intense, abiding appreciation, “love” gets thrown around a bit much when not applied to real human beings. We say things such as “I love farmhouse cheddar” or “I love post-holiday clearance sales” with disconcerting casualness, the kind of laissez faire bandying of devotion that has prompted countless elementary school philosophers to ask, “If you love it so much, why don’t you marry it?” But when you start using “love” to describe people, well, you better mean it – a good, earthy cheese might be delicious, but it does not have feelings. So when I took over as LOOKatOKC’s editor in 2009, I tasked myself with developing an annual special issue looking at the people who make living in Oklahoma City a richer, constantly evolving experience, the kind our grandparents never thought they would see. I could have called it something less commitment-centric, like “40 People Under 40 Along I-40,” but I decided to go “all-in.” I called it “LOOK at the People We Love.” Can’t exactly wriggle out of that BY GEORGE LANG one, can you? LOOKATOKC EDITOR Yes, it is extreme, but this is the real GLANG@OPUBCO.COM thing, trust me. In Oklahoma City, BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ doing wonderful things requires more STATICBLOG commitment than it does in most other places. Our culture conditions us to light out for the coasts if we really want to make an impact, but the people who populate these annual issues decided to stay home and be amazing. They work hard and bring boundless creativity to bear in making this place so much cooler than most people outside our state can comprehend. Some of these people are famous faces who are absolutely everywhere. Others are background movers, changing this place through their constant, behind-the-scenes efforts. But all of them are essential to the growing coolness of Oklahoma City in 2012. So we love them. Is that too personal?

Motto for 2012: Work together
I
t’s a new year, which means I have roughly 365 days to see concerts. Trust me when I say that I would go to one every day if the fates allowed. On this edition of Live Nathan, I wanted to share my New Year’s resolution because I think it’s the sort of thing that will make local music stronger than ever. Work together as much as you can. The more help you have then the more time you’ll have to enjoy what you’re making. I think working together is what has brought the Okie music scene to where it is today, and it’s the thing that will keep it growing. Thanks for a great 2011, and I’ll see you at the show in 2012.
SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE JAN. 7 – Six Okie music talents are swapping and sharing songs in a show that sounds more fit for a living room than a venue. Samantha Crain, Ali Harter, Penny Hill, Brine Webb, John Calvin and Jesse Aycock will have to squeeze together pretty tight to fit on the Opolis stage, but once they do, you’ll be in for a treat. Not to be missed. @ The Opolis, 113 N Crawford Ave. JAN. 12 - Daniel Walcher is playing a free acoustic set which will be good to your ears and to your wallet. The singer/songwriter is heavy on heartfelt ballads and soulful crooning. John Calvin, Jerrod Beck and Ben Stookey are scheduled to play too. @ The Society, 1609 Blackwelder JAN. 13 - Paintscratcher is simply the loudest band I’ve ever seen come out of Oklahoma. I sat in front of stage speakers at the Flaming Lips on NYE but my ears didn’t take a pounding like they did when I saw Paintscratcher. Even if you don’t go to this show, you’ll be able to hear it. @ The Conservatory, 8911 N Western Ave. Is there a local band I need to see? Do you have an album coming out in 2012? Feel free to e-mail me info here: livenathan@gmail.com

2011 was great, but looking forward to 2012
R
eflecting on the past year is bittersweet. It means you are one more year closer to old age yet one more year experienced, as well. As life goes on, we don’t think of each day as a new experience. Maybe some do, but for many it means passing the time by until the weekend when we can get on with our social life. I’m highlighting some of my favorite events from the past year.
FEB 2, 2011 — EGGS, IT IS The Omelet Party is my earliest recognition of a good time in 2011. The Oklahoma City Museum of Art puts on this fundraiser every year with all of the proceeds benefiting the museum. There are dozens of food vendors creating various kinds of egg dishes as part of a competition. I remember the beginning of the night: Hundreds of people of all ages filled the Coca-Cola Bricktown Event Center. As the night went on, the free beverages made everything a bit hazy, but there was a band and therefore dancing, as well as mingling with tons of fantastic people.
AUG. 10, 2011 — MOUTHGARDENS If there was one hipster trend that has crossed over into the mainstream it has to be the love of the mustache. Events across the nation support the facial hair. Oklahoma City is no different: The annual Mustache Bash is all about supporting local retailers, celebrating local music and eating local food. I saw Ben Kilgore, Denver Duncan, Dr. Pants, Matt Lowery, Jabee and Student Film play that day. Some of that time was spent drinking a skinny margarita at Iguana Lounge, but when Jabee hit the stage, the crowd swarmed him. I’ve never seen so many people pile into a tent at once to see one man play. He stole the night and the intensity of the crowd made it an amazing night of localness.
NOV. 12, 2011 — BLOCKHEADS The second annual Block Party OKC was a night to remember, partly because I got to see my boyfriend as a model (He wore his “blue steel” look) and partly because it’s a ton of great people together wearing LEGOs for a good cause. I wore an outfit by Nicole Moan that would cut you if you got too close to me, as well as a more demure look by LSD Hats and OSU fashion design students. The runway was straight up Michael Jackson style, with tiles that light up as you walk across them. Local musician Sherree Chamberlain had a field day with it as she danced her way down the catwalk. Those are some of my favorite events of the past year. I try to frequent as many different bars as possible in the 365 days given to me each year, but there are a few standouts: VZDs, Ludivine and the Red Piano Bar treated me very well with their friendly owners, tasty cocktails, and cool ambiance. I asked my fellow social media friends what their favorite hangout of 2011 was, and the hands down the top pick was Blue Note Lounge. The runner up was Hilo Club and the late Prohibition Room. As we move into the New Year, venues will open and closed venues will be missed. We say goodbye to Prohibition Room and hello to a new S&B Burger Joint. January is a symbol of change and new beginnings, so let’s begin 2012 like there will be no 2013, because it could happen. The Mayans think so.

‘EL CAMINO’ – THE BLACK KEYS
e Black Keys have grown from two kids banging out blues-rock in an Akron, Ohio, basement to big-time Grammy-grabbing greatness, and their sound has grown to gargantuan proportions, too, with a little help from a few good friends — Danger Mouse in particular — on their seventh collection of souped-up studio sessions, “El Camino.” The ride kicks off in high gear with “Lonely Boy” (not to be mistaken for your grandma’s favorite Andrew Gold hit of the same name), with Patrick Carney’s driving drums pushing Dan Auerbach’s snarling guitar riff through the sound barrier while Mr. Mouse — aka Brian Burton — adds a high ‘60s-style organ sparkle to the slapback-echo mix and Auerbach bemoans a love that keeps him waiting while a trio

of females (Ashley Wilcoxson, Leisa Hans, Heather Rigdon) supplies sympathetic vocal backing. Burton adds more deliciously cheesy organ to the pulsating fray of “Gold on the Ceiling,” while Auerbach turns his amp to maximum buzz and Carney’s kick-drum relentlessly thumps the listener in the chest. “Little Black Submarines” is strongly reminiscent of a Led Zeppelin epic, entering lamblike with an acoustic ballad, then suddenly rising from a whisper to a lion-size electric roar in the final, fiery half. Don’t let the cover photos of old beat-up vans fool you. With Burton serving as unofficial third member this time around, co-writing and co-producing all 11 tracks, the Black Keys have become a mightier music machine than ever.

‘THE COMPLETE EP COLLECTION’ – JAMES MCCARTNEY
ooking like his father but vocally resembling his father’s greatest collaborator, James McCartney faces the same uphill battle waged by Julian and Sean Lennon, Frank Sinatra Jr. and other children of music icons: how to assert a singular identity with a historic last name. In the past two years, McCartney released two EPs, “Available Light” and “Close At Hand,” produced by Paul McCartney and the elder Macca’s frequent producer, David Kahne. “The Complete EP Collection” brings the two discs together with bonus material, showcasing a slight debut and a much-improved follow-up. James McCartney’s Rickenbacker guitar and clear vocals on “Angel” offer the key highlight on the “Available Light” disc, and “Glisten” showcases
his talent for stream-of-consciousness lyricism — the ballad sounds like a solid Neil Finn song. But McCartney runs out of steam quickly, ending the original five songs with a forgettable cover of Neil Young’s “Old Man.” Bonus tracks such as “New York Times” and “I Love You Dad” should have been left unshared, though the closing “Moonstar” is pleasingly reminiscent of Wings’ more propulsive songs such as “Hi Hi Hi.” Fortunately, “Close at Hand” shows the younger McCartney on an ascendant path, deploying stronger melodies on “I Only Want to Be Alone” and “Wings of a Lightest Weight,” and then displaying impressive fingerpicking on the electro-rock of “Else and Else But Dead.” While James McCartney has unquestionable potential as both a singer-songwriter and musician, these songs only make a good
showing rather than asserting their creator’s singularity. The name is a blessing and a curse, but if “Close at Hand” is any indication, his tentative

‘DOUBLE-WIDE DREAM’ – CASEY DONAHEW BAND
hile I consider myself an ardent advocate of free speech and expression, I often wish I could ban country songwriters from certain overused phrases. Heading that list of worn-out lyrics would be “I love that pretty little country girl,” an eyeroll-inducing line that seems to be experiencing unprecedented popularity as rural anthems extolling the virtues of downhome lifestyles and the women who thrive in them dominate the genre’s charts. The insipid cliche makes yet another appearance in the chorus to the title track of the Casey Donahew Band’s “Double-Wide Dream,” and vanilla lyrics like it are the chief shortcoming of the popular Texas <<<

country sextet’s follow-up to its 2009 breakout album, “Moving On.” The band’s Burleson-born and bred frontman wrote or co-wrote all 10 tracks on “Double-Wide Dream,” but Donahew makes listeners wade through too much generic material to get to the stronger stuff, especially considering the album clocks in at less than 40 minutes. Still, those who slog through the blander tracks are rewarded with some engrossing songs, most notably the rollicking yarn “White Trash Story II (The Deuce),” another hillbilly ode enlivened with all sorts of intriguing imagery. Similarly, Donahew and co-writer Aaron Copeland bring enough vivid details and genuine emotion to “Running Through My Head” and “Regrets” to set them apart from the usual maudlin breakup ballads.

When it comes to love songs, Donahew and Steve Rice, lead singer of Stillwater red dirt band No Justice, collaborate on a couple of keepers: “Lets Not Say Goodbye Again” makes palpable the relieved joy of a man grateful for reconciliation with his lady love, while “Give You a Ring” is less noteworthy for its play
on words than for its protagonist’s unrestrained vulnerability. The band makes frequent jaunts to Oklahoma and will play Feb. 18 at the Diamond Ballroom. For more information, go to www.diamondballroom.net. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO’

he stark, chilly 2009 Swedish screen adaptation of the late Stieg Larsson’s “The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo” and its two follow-up films utterly belonged to Noomi Rapace, a spiky, darkly seductive actress who seemed to inhabit the role of punk, pieced computer hacker Lisbeth Salander with eerie ferocity. So the questions that persistently hovered over director David Fincher’s American remake of the first in Larsson’s blockbuster Millennium Trilogy of blunt, pulpy crime novels were: Who will play Salander and how will anyone ever match up to Rapace’s fearsome intensity? Well, the answers to those questions are: 1) Rooney Mara, the tart coed who practically stole Fincher’s “The Social Network” in a brief, brilliant and pithy openingscene performance, and 2) Mara more than matches Rapace, piercing for piercing and tat for tat and delivers a bold, brash and brave acting turn that makes this slick, new adaptation of “Dragon Tattoo” all her own. Since Larsson fans (of the internationally best-selling novels and fine Swedish-language movies) are legion, it hardly merits detailed synopsis to describe Fincher’s movie. The artful, perfectionist director of such stunning police procedurals as “Se7en” and “Zodiac” and his canny scenarist Steven Zaillian (“Moneyball,” “Schindler’s
List”) are fully on their game with this interpretation that trims away loads of exposition and ancillary characters yet stays true to the author’s dense plot and his duo of mismatched, world-weary crime solvers. While they jigger the ending slightly and juice the thing with stylish visuals that make director Niels Arden Oplev’s Swedish version seem staid by comparison, Fincher and company smartly keep the focus on hyperintelligent Goth Salander and disgraced crusading journalist Mikael Blomkvist (Daniel Craig in a nice, stubblefaced contrast to his suave 007 persona). Indeed, they are the characters that propel Larsson’s three stories so compellingly — his Nordic, anti-Nick and Nora Charles, if you will. Wisely, Fincher doesn’t try to Americanize the story and setting. It’s still set in the well-scrubbed Stockholm metropolis and the craggy, frigid climes of Hedeby Island, where the wealthy Vanger clan — a creepy nest of drunkards, hermits, greedheads, abusive parents, closet Nazis and anti-Semites — has its ancestral estate. The plodding, old-school Blomkvist, with jazzy computer aid from Salander, takes on the case proffered by elderly tycoon Henrik Vanger (smooth Christopher Plummer) to look into the disappearance, and presumed murder, of his beloved teenage niece at a family gathering 40 years earlier.
The rest is a complex, perverse tangle of serial murder, S&M depravity, stark nudity, coldblooded brutality, rape and mutilation, painstakingly unraveled by two unlikely investigators. But it’s their startlingly unconventional relationship (and love affair) that provides the passionate, coursing pulse for Larsson’s coldly complex tales. As usual, Fincher surrounds his stars with stellar support, from the suavely patriarchal Plummer to the smarmily convivial Stellan Skarsgard as Vanger scion Martin, and from efficient Robin Wright as Blomkvist’s crisp editor-lover Erika to the porcine Yorick van Wageningen as Salander’s slimy, manipulative legal guardian. Undoubtedly, Fincher’s film will have its detractors and its champions, its debates between purists and partisans. But, whatever the consensus of readers and moviegoers, it’s a measure of Larsson’s storytelling prowess that two such fine films have been rendered from the dire, pulpy doings of his first novel. Note: Fincher and co-stars Craig and Mara said last week in interviews that they have not been contracted to participate in remakes of the other books in the trilogy — “The Girl Who Played with Fire” and “The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet’s Nest.” But all three said they would be ready and willing if called.

‘War Horse’ is a galloping good movie
S
ome wags — or, perhaps, nags — have glibly dubbed Steven Spielberg’s visually majestic “War Horse” as “Black Beauty on the Western Front.” It’s an often stirring, beautifully mounted and rigorously retro epic that draws on the familiar conventions of classic equine sagas (“Black Beauty,” “National Velvet” and so on) and on well-known tropes from the “war to end all wars” genre. Although the master director of “Saving Private Ryan” maintains this is not a war movie, it portrays some of the most gritty and stunning depictions of World War I battle — from a stately, old-school cavalry charge to the grimy, hand-to-hand horrors of trench warfare — to appear on film since “All Quiet on the Western Front” and “Paths of Glory.” Spielberg also asserts that this is not a children’s movie, although its original source material is a best-selling 1982 young adult novel by Michael Morpurgo, and it falls staunchly in line with the filmmaker’s sentimental, square-jawed vision of youthful adventure and childhood longing for home and family. The episodic story, ably scripted by Lee Hall (“Billy Elliot”) and Richard Curtis (“Four Weddings and a Funer-

al”) and synthesized from Morpurgo’s book and dramatist Nick Stafford’s grand, Tony Award-winning stage play, follows a classic narrative arc of meeting, bonding, separation, grim hardship and uplifting reunion that has informed boy-and-animal tales through the ages. Opening in the hardscrabble farm country of Devon, England, the tale centers on young Albert (newcomer Jeremy Irvine), whose parents Ted and Rose Narracott (Peter Mullan and Emily Watson) are struggling tenant farmers on a rocky plot leased from an aristocratic, Simon Legree-style landlord (David Thewlis). When the rascally Ted goes to a rural auction to buy a much-needed plow horse, he impulsively plops down the family’s savings instead on a young colt, a spirited animal that seems totally unsuited for farm labor. Albert quickly takes the horse under his care, names him Joey and through determined, patient training forms a special, spiritual, bond with the animal. But when financial hardships persist and World War I looms, Ted is forced to sell Joey into service with the British army. Capt. Nicholls (Tom Hiddleston), a noble young cavalry officer, takes to the steed and promises Albert he’ll respect and care for Joey. But war is war, and in France Joey finds himself embroiled in a series of har-
LOOKATOKC.COM
rowing adventures. He comes under the care of a kindly widowed farmer (Niels Arestrup) and his sickly granddaughter Emilie (Celine Buckens) and is eventually conscripted into labor, pulling massive artillery pieces through the muck, for the German army. Albert enlists in the British infantry and finds himself slogging through the trenches at the bloody Battle of the Somme. All this sets up a not surprising but nonetheless heartrending climax amid the rubble and barbed wire of No Man’s Land (a scene that recalls several classic Christmas truce tales, notably the 2005 French film “Joyeux Noel”). While cynics might sneer at the bald emotions and the obvious manipulation at work in “War Horse,” the movie falls squarely in the heart-tugging tradition of horse movies past — with the added bonus of Spielberg’s populist sensibilities in full glory and his creative collaborators working at the height of their powers (especially artful cinematographer Janusz Kaminski). Indeed, “War Horse” is a shamelessly old-fashioned horsey movie, but old-fashioned in the best possible sense. — Dennis King, Wimgo.com

“Mission: Impossible” is a kick to the head
T
om Cruise’s “Mission: Impossible” series began 15 years ago with a flashy, visually acute but largely incoherent installment from Brian DePalma, and after John Woofollowed it up with a better film that had almost nothing in common with its predecessor, the “M:I” series started looking like an extremely malleable directorial exercise: Put Cruise in an action film and make it work. Put the wrong director in the seat, and the whole series could selfdestruct in five seconds. “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” achieves something exceedingly rare by simply being the hands-down best on the fourth go-round. J.J. Abrams changed the game entirely with 2006’s “M:I:III” by introducing some emotional stakes and an undercurrent of nervous humor, and “Ghost Protocol” masterfully builds on that foundation thanks to the impeccable creative instincts of director Brad Bird, who brings the sense of kinetic energy and sharp-witted storytelling that made his Pixar films such as “The Incredibles” so indelible. In fact, “Ghost Protocol” slightly resembles “The Incredibles” in terms of its sheer love of the genre — that film’s third act was almost more of a spy film than
a superhero epic. Unlike the first two installments, which depended heavily on new technology to move the plot along, the high-tech moments in “Ghost Protocol” employ entirely feasible gadgets. A caper involving a camouflaging back-projected image in a hallway might be hard to pull off, but in the hands of Ethan Hunt (Cruise) and returning “M:I:III” gadget man Benji Dunn (Simon Pegg), it works. Well, at least they try. That is part of the charm of “Ghost Protocol”: A good portion of the technological assists turn out to be dangerously buggy, which forces Hunt, Dunn and new Impossible Mission Force team members Jane Carter (Paula Patton, finally getting the cool role she deserves) and intel analyst William Brandt (Jeremy Renner) to use their brains and agility. The setup is fairly simple this time: While on a mission to extract top-secret material from the Kremlin, Hunt and Dunn get broadsided by a completely unrelated explosion, and because IMF had agents in the building, the U.S. and Russia are on a countdown to mutually assured destruction. The real culprit is Kurt Hendricks (Michael Nyqvist), a former Soviet military adviser who lost his mind and began preaching global thermonuclear war as a
method of restoring order to the world. Hendricks has the intercept device, and the IMF team has to find Hendricks and delay the end of civilization. This mission has Hunt and his colleagues scaling high-rises in Dubai just before a sandstorm hits and crashing a glitzy party in India to get closer to the villain. Bird fills “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” with set pieces that play like instant classics — dizzying fits of kinetic cat-and-mouse action that are as memorable for their wry humor as for their danger. Cruise is all business in “Ghost Protocol,” making the transition from the IMF’s young hotshot to the experienced leader with admirable grace. All the players get to have their fun, and the crackling script from Josh Applebaum and Andre Nemec, veterans of Abrams’ spy series “Alias,” never lets the actors down. From the first scenes, Bird lets everyone know that “Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol” is operating at a different level. During an orchestrated jailbreak from a Russian prison, Hunt orders Dunn to pipe in some music to set the tone. And as the violence ramps up, Dean Martin serenades the angry rioters. Ain’t that a kick in the head?

‘We Bought a Zoo’ lacks bite or roar
A
lthough it’s far superior to last summer’s toothless comedy “Zookeeper,” and it holds the promise of something warm and friendly from long-absent director Cameron Crowe and the always reliable star Matt Damon, the feel-good family film “We Bought a Zoo” is an odd cinematic creature that’s neither fish nor fowl. Part drama of family loss, father-son conflict and middle-aged anxiety and part cuddly comedy of cute kids, cuter animals and budding romance between a widowed father and a harried zookeeper, the story is well-meaning but suffers from the same problem that sabotaged Crowe’s last picture, 2005’s rambling “Elizabethtown.” It’s a hodgepodge of interesting, potentially compelling parts that never quite gel into a satisfying whole. Crowe and his co-writer, Aline Brosh McKenna (“The Devil Wears Prada”), aim for something heartwarming and PG-rated in this Americanized adaptation of British journalist Benjamin Mee’s touching memoir about buying and restoring a ramshackle zoo in an effort to heal his family while his wife was dying of brain cancer.

The film moves the tale from Devonshire, England, to Southern California and casts Damon as Mee, an adventure-seeking newspaper writer still grieving over the recent death of his beloved wife (played in flashbacks by Stephanie Szosak). Mee casts about looking for a fresh start and a way to connect with his two confused kids. Angry teen son Dylan (brooding Colin Ford) channels his bereavement into macabre drawings of bloodletting and decapitations and gets expelled from school. Seven-year-old daughter Rosie (adorable Maggie Elizabeth Jones) misses her mom and looks to her overwhelmed father and anguished brother for support. In a fit of inspiration — and against the advice of his banker brother, Duncan (Thomas Haden Church in roguish comic support) — Mee quits his job in L.A. and invests his inheritance in a rural property of 18 acres that includes the ramshackle Rosemoor Animal Park. There, he’s suddenly in charge of a ragtag crew that includes workaholic animal lover Kelly (Scarlett Johansson in an underwritten part) and a menagerie of shaggy, sickly endangered animals (including Buster, a

650-pound grizzly bear, and Spar, an ailing and decrepit tiger). As the overwhelmed new owner works to bring the park up to code against the nitpicking of an antagonistic inspector (John Michael Higgins), halting but inevitable romances play out between Mee and Kelly and Dylan and wide-eyed young zoo hand Lily (Elle Fanning, too sweet and dreamy by half). It all works its way toward an ending of uplift, and true to form, the music-savvy Crowe punctuates with an eclectic soundtrack of oldies and contemporary tracks (ranging from Bob Dylan and Neil Young to haunting songs by composer Jonsi of the Icelandic cult band Sigur Ros). But even here, Crowe seems a little rusty and uncertain as he hits a few notes too heavily — such as when he backs a rainy-day montage with Randy Newman’s funereal “I Think It’s Going to Rain Today.” That’s the story of “We Bought A Zoo.” It’s a shaggy, loose-jointed movie with a good heart that we want to love a lot more than we actually do. — Dennis King, Wimgo.com

Spielberg brings ‘Tintin’ to life on film
D
irector Steven Spielberg brings the classic comic book “Tintin” to life in a computer-animated film that makes for an all-ages rollicking adventure. “The Adventures of Tintin” is based on the comics by Herge, which have sold more than 200 million copies worldwide. The mystery in “Adventures of Tintin” is based on three of the Tintin books — “The Crab With the Golden Claws,” “The Secret of the Unicorn” and “Red Rackham’s Treasure.” A CGI representation of Herge himself makes an appearance near the film’s beginning, as the painter crafting a portrait of Tintin. Intrepid young Belgian reporter Tintin (voiced by Jamie Bell) buys a model ship, the Unicorn, at a market stall for
a pound — and is immediately beset by people eager to buy it from him for much more. Suspicious, Tintin takes the ship home and begins to investigate the story of the Unicorn, the original on which the model ship was based. Before long, Tintin’s investigation leads him into danger, as he’s kidnapped and headed to Morocco on a cargo ship, where Mr. Sakharine (voiced by Daniel Craig) has bribed the crew to revolt against Captain Haddock (voiced by Andy Serkis). He’s aided by his dog, Snowy, a charming character in his own right. The supporting cast is nearly Dickensian, including bumbling detectives Thomson and Thomson (voiced by Simon Pegg and Nick Frost) and opera singer Bianca Castafiore (voiced by Kim Stengel). As the movie unfolds, the connection among all the players and the importance of the Unicorn becomes
clear. Along the way, Spielberg treats the viewer to beautiful scenery, compelling action and some of the least distracting CGI/motion-capture work in recent cinema. The characters come to life brilliantly without falling into the “uncanny valley” of uncomfortable viewing that’s often the result of characters that are neither fully human nor fully animated. The settings are dynamic and bristling with action. With pirates on the high seas, lost treasures and desert vistas, this is every bit a classic adventure tale. Finding the truth and righting past wrongs are important themes in the film, which should delight Tintin’s many fans and create even more new ones.

I
f “Guitar Hero” was the spunky teenager who made music gaming fun, “Rocksmith” is his older, cooler brother in a distressed leather jacket. “Rocksmith” (Ubisoft, for Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $79.99) trades in the now familiar plastic guitar with buttons for the real, six-stringed deal. You simply plug your electric guitar — or an acoustic guitar with a pickup — into your console or computer. For $199, you can get the software bundled with an entry-level Epiphone Les Paul Jr. guitar. Generation after generation of wouldbe Eric Claptons have tried learning the guitar with instructors, books, DVDs and other teaching tools. Most of us get stuck at the intro to “Stairway to Heaven.” With some minor guitar experience under my belt, I dared “Rocksmith” to teach me, entertain me and keep me engaged. It succeeded on all fronts. Guitar lessons turn into a game: Keep in step with the colored, glowing and spinning rectangles that fall down the screen and land on a numbered fret. The more notes you get correct, the better your score. It takes some getting used to. The descending rectangles are colored with a different hue for each of the six guitar strings. But most guitar strings aren’t colored, so you have to mentally keep track of those color-and-string pairs — which change quickly during the action. I was able to learn the melody to The Rolling Stones’ “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” within minutes, but the techniques get more complicated. For example, the double-stops technique requires covering two strings at the same time while muting the adjacent strings. It’s easy when you’re looking down and staring at your fingers with all the time in the world. It’s a lot harder when you have to look at the screen, remember where the correct frets are by muscle memory and strike them fast enough to get ready for the next set of notes. The teaching aspect of “Rocksmith” hinges on the very nature of playing a video game. You have to watch the screen. You don’t have a lot of time to look at your hands. So you are forced to get better at knowing where the frets are by feel, as well as how to pluck, say, the fourth string instead of the fifth without looking. The “Rocksmith” playlist runs from classic rockers like The Animals and Cream to up-and-comers like Titus Andronicus and the Black Keys. There’s also an “amp” mode in which you can play whatever you like, and you can download filters that add fuzz, feedback, distortion or other effects to the sound mix. Once you’ve mastered a few techniques and chords, you might want to power off the game and see where the instrument will take you all on its own. The ultimate challenge presented by “Rocksmith” is to get good enough that you won’t play it all. You’ll just play the guitar. From The Associated Press

Katie Wicks Crystal Vision DJ
Take one look at Katie Wicks and you’ll see more “Girl With A Dragon Tattoo” than a dozen movie theatres. Black makeup. Black hat. Black hair. Black everything. Take a few minutes to speak with her and you’ll probably get schooled by her music knowledge. There’s also a good chance you won’t be able to say goodbye without a hug too. Wicks is a music enthusiast. On Wednesday night’s she’s DJing the Robotic dance party at Kamp’s, which is easily one the most discussed and popular shindigs in Oklahoma City. Wicks also helps run Robot Dance Records, a digital record label. We almost forget Wicks hosts a weekly two-hour radio show on The Spy and is in at least two bands. In case you couldn’t tell, the woman lives and breathes music. We love Wicks because she builds our music community every day. If you see a black blur running past you then it’s probably Wicks on her way to another gig. We suggest following her to the party.

Audrey, Justin Falk Owners of Shop Good
Audrey Falk and Justin Falk weren’t born in Oklahoma, but you can’t tell that after walking through their Okie-centric boutique. The Oklahoma transplants own Shop Good, a downtown Oklahoma City gift hot spot with more character than your favorite novel. Justin is the store’s creative force. He’s the one screen-printing the shirts hanging throughout the store and putting holes in the walls to show off a few more. Audrey is the brains of the business. She’s the one behind the cash register who’ll help you leave Shop Good with a greeting card and a smile or two. Together, the duo has created one of the most interesting philanthropic ventures in Oklahoma City. A portion of every sale at Shop Good is donated to a non-profit organization, and the giving doesn’t stop there. The couple has successfully thrown one the biggest parties in Oklahoma City two summers running. It’s called Mustache Bash and the latest installment in August not only attracted about 2,000 patrons but also raised awareness for local shopping, music and art. We love Shop Good and the Falks because they are proof that you can never have too much of a good thing. – By Nathan Poppe, LookatOKC columnist

George Salisbury Délo Creative
Tucked away in the backyard of Flaming Lips frontman Wayne Coyne’s house is an army of video and graphic design fanatics known as Délo Creative. George Salisbury is the leader of this collection of AV misfits. If you’ve watched a Flaming Lips music video in the past 10 years then you’ve likely seen Salisbury’s devilishly creative influence. Salisbury and his crew sport a signature guerilla filming style that captures the spirit and liveliness of local bands such as Broncho and CHUD in ways that a tripod or a trained eye could never dream. Délo’s video cameras and fearlessness have filmed everything from a dumpster diving documentary to a live Flaming Lips music video in front of a cemetery. You’ll be hard pressed to guess what Salisbury is going to release next. We love Salisbury because he’s able to bottle lightning, and he’s not afraid of standing in the eye of the storm to get it. – By Nathan Poppe, LookatOKC columnist

Kristen Vails
Plaza District executive director This year, Matt Damon bought a zoo. Kristen Vails decided to run one. Your best bet to catch Vails in her element is during the second Friday of every month at Live on the Plaza. You’ll probably need help finding her in the crowds though. She’s responsible for fueling the growth of the monthly art walk in Oklahoma City’s Plaza District. The artwork and shopping in the district is already stellar, but Vails is the one helping people connect the dots and celebrate the budding artistic community. Her calculated planning and enthusiasm for culture has attracted hundreds of people to the Plaza District on freezing cold nights and melty summer evenings. Without Vails, there wouldn’t be fanny pack fashion shows in front of The Velvet Monkey Salon or hipster Santa photo contests throughout the Plaza District. We love the Plaza District and Vails because every good zoo needs a great zookeeper. – By Nathan Poppe, LookatOKC columnist
Josh Sallee
A rising star in hip-hop Three decades into its history, hip-hop is the dominant music of the mass culture and permeates all neighborhoods from shore to shore, so now it is entirely possible for one of its best new exponents to emerge from the suburbs of Bixby, Okla. But Josh Sallee’s talent would be considered extraordinary regardless of origin: having opened for rising alt-hip-hop acts such as Kendrick Lamar and The Cool Kids as well as mainstreamers like Mac Miller and Big K.R.I.T., Sallee is proving to the national players that hip-hop can thrive in the plains. This summer, when Sallee released “So Chill,” the first single from his debut album, “Return to Sender,” it received 1,500 hits in the first hour after he tweeted the track. Much of the credit goes to Sallee’s impressive lyrical flow, a mile-a-minute stream that is just as mellifluous when the rapper is freestyling. Consider that Sallee only started rapping a little more than two years ago, and it feels like his career could go supernova at any moment. And yet, Sallee is prepared to stay in Oklahoma. While temptations abound for uprooting his act and lighting out for a bigger market, Sallee is prepared to stay near home and make the record companies seek him out. It was rapper Asher Roth who suggested that Sallee continue to produce homegrown hip-hop during a discussion at Austin’s SXSW 2011. “I think it’s possible to get big out of Oklahoma, and maybe major labels would come to me and fund what we are doing here and let it stay here,” Sallee told LOOKatOKC’s Adam Kemp in July 2011. When those labels show up, expect a bidding war. – By George Lang, LookatOKC editor

Kamala Gamble
Chef, Queen of locally grown foods It’s easy to get pulled in by chef Kamala Gamble’s big smile and contagious enthusiasm. When she mentions working for chef Rick Bayless and appearing on his cooking shows in the early days, it’s obvious you’re in the presence of rare talent. Taste her food, and the heart begins to palpitate. But take a step within her Guilford Gardens, and it’s true love. She and her family live in a lovely home in Nichols Hills, not the mansion variety the town is known for, but one that includes an industrial kitchen and a gorgeous dining room that hosts private parties and cooking classes. On its own merits, the home is enviable. Glancing out the back window, what starts as desire ends in deep respect. Hidden in a well-populated neighborhood is almost an acre of land where some of the city’s finest produce grows: tomatoes that come in heirloom, early girl, juliet, sun gold, big beef and pretty much any other variety you can imagine. Squash that is born yellow, white, green and sometimes a mix of all three. Golden beets as well as red. Small, medium and large potatoes breach the earth in brown, yellow and purple. Then there’s the cantaloupe, sweet potatoes, hot and sweet peppers, herbs and leafy lettuce, chard and arugula. You get the picture. Kamala now operates a community-supported agriculture service. Details on how to join or get on the waiting list are available on her Web site. As if running several miles a morning and raising an enormous organic garden weren’t enough, Kamala also helped found Oklahoma City’s own Slow Foods Convivium. The Slow Foods movement is a rallying cry to take a left when a fast food establishment is just a right turn away. It’s a celebration of local, sustainably grown ingredients. It’s a touchstone for those who seek an alternative to food from cans and boxes. But Kamala doesn’t just talk or blog about it, she works and grows it every day. And when she’s not in the garden, she’s likely teaching cooking classes. What’s not to love about that?
Rumble the Bison
NBA mascot, community superstar There are many examples of why having an NBA team in Oklahoma City is great. “Community pride,” “watching great basketball players” and “it’s good for the economy” are all really good thoughts and equally important. But the biggest reason we love the NBA is a basketball-dunking, flag-waving, birthday-appearing all around community superstar. It’s Rumble the Bison. Rumble is perfect. Rumble is funny, charming, soft-spoken, athletic, good with kids and really gentle for a large animal. Rumble does birthday parties, reading events at schools, hands out valentines on that special February day and even finds time to practice dunking a basketball. He can play the drums, climb ladders and had some quality dance moves. Do we need to keep going? You get the point. Rumble is what is great about the NBA in Oklahoma City. Rumble debuted Feb. 17 at halftime against the New Orleans Hornets in 2009 and has been doing amazing things since. – By Matthew Clayton, LookatOKC graphic designer
Andy Sipes
Co-creator of web series on Adultswim.com Oklahoma City-born Andy Sipes has co-created (with Dana Snyder) a new animated Web series for AdultSwim.com called “Songs for Helping.” In “Songs for Helping,” two angels, Sharey and Carey, provide terrible advice via song. The show can be seen at www.adultswim. com/songs. Sipes also works on G4’s “Code Monkeys” as the art director and voice of Mr. Larrity. The 6’6’’ actor is frequently seen on “Last Call with Carson Daly,” playing an uncouth pal of Daly, a workman, or in one instance, David Beckham. He’s provided voices on series including “Minoriteam” and “Saul of the Mole Men” for Adult Swim. He parlayed his 5th-grade English assignments into an Adult Swim web series, as well. His “Sipes Stories” are illustrated versions of his writing assignments, which feature snakes in tuxedos, grade-school presidents and horror movie monsters. The series is online at adultswim.com/promos/201010_sipes/index.html.

Jarod Evans and Chad Copelin, Blackwatch Studios
Blackwatch Studios is becoming the nexus point for the music scene in central Oklahoma, a testament to the musicianship and extraordinary commitment of its principals, Jarod Evans and Chad Copelin. Operating just south of Norman’s Main Street at 103 W Comanche, Evans and Copelin’s studio first became a massive draw for local musicians such as Sherree Chamberlain, K.C. Clifford, Jacob Abello and The Non, and then their reputation went global. Seriously. In early 2011, Copelin and Evans were approached by a Ukrainian band after the group heard a copy of “Novels,” the Blackwatch-produced album by Fort Worth’s The Burning Hotels. Financial concerns made it prohibitive for the band to fly to Oklahoma, so the producers met the group in Prague, Czech Republic, recorded the album in April and returned, flying 20 hours just to hit the ground running and set up their stage for the Norman Music Festival. Evans and Copelin are both consummate musicians who can shift styles at a moment’s notice, and their collaborators, including singersongwriter Brine Webb, have become Oklahoma’s answer to the Funk Brothers, the backup musicians who played on all the classic Motown recordings. During the Buffalo Lounge, the Oklahoma Film and Music Office’s showcase for state talent at the 2011 SXSW Music Festival, Evans, Copelin and Webb essentially served as the house band, playing behind about three-quarters of the performers, including Graham Colton. And now the studio is coming to the attention of A-listers. Backing up rising Tulsa star Ben Kilgore, Evans and Copelin played a showcase for Akon, Dr. Dre and Timbaland in Atlanta in 2010, and during the summer of 2011, Kelly Clarkson recorded several songs at Blackwatch. There is simply more to a great studio than its sound — Blackwatch is a rapidly growing family thanks to Evans and Copelin’s commitment to the area’s musical talent. “There is a very conscious effort on our end to being much more than a recording studio,” Evans said. “We just believe in the concept of community, whether it’s in music or just any little thing. Just embracing the people around you.” – By George Lang, LookatOKC editor
Steve “Wampus” Reynolds and Suzy Thompson Creators of The Opolis and Forward Food Who would’ve thought the long gone and mostly forgotten Yippee Yi Yo Café could’ve been such an important brick in the foundation of our local music and food scene. If the 1990s hadn’t been so dead set on resurrecting the coffeehouse, perhaps Steve “Wampus” Reynolds and Suzy Thompson might never have met, which would’ve meant the void in our collective lives was the absence of The Opolis and Forward Foods. Suzy Thompson has an easy smile, superstar sense of humor and indefatigable passion for cheese. But her spirit of community is what makes her someone we love. As an aspiring young documentary filmmaker living in Los Angeles, Suzy took an internship with Food Network. Her love affair
with cheese and artisan foods began then and blazes on today. Rather than stay in L.A. and live amongst the culturally enlightened, Suzy and Wampus came home. And rather than forget the fuel that fired them, they embarked on a life of sharing what they learned about food and music and bring cultural enlightenment to Oklahoma. Despite a shiny new Whole Foods Market just down the street from their Forward Foods location on North Western, the little market with the big cheese selection has found a niche with its organic produce, locally baked bread vast array of legumes, grains, salts, olives, pastas and sauces from around the world. – By Dave Cathey, Food Dude

LACED UP,

THE COUTURE CORSETS OF NICOLE MOAN Heather Warlick Moore | Mood Publication Editor
Oklahoma City has a thriving community of artists that grows more diverse as the city carves out its new identity as a cultural center. That diversity is partly due to artistic Oklahomans such as Nicole Moan, 33, originally from Sacramento, Calif. The artist, who has lived in Oklahoma City for the past 20 years, creates extraordinary wearable ceramic corsets, wall hangings, sculpted tile murals and anything else her creative mind dreams up. Her work graces galleries from Melrose Avenue in Los Angeles across the country to New York City and even in Europe. She and her husband, Jason Moan (pronounced Mo-Ann), 35, a sculptor, and their three daughters live in what looks like an average northwest Oklahoma City home. Step inside, however, and it’s clear you’re in artists’ quarters. Nearly every inch of the family’s living room and main bathroom has been reimagined by the artsy couple. Bright, sculpted ceramic tile scenes inspired by Nicole Moan’s painter father, Albert Riddle, adorn the living room floor. Riddle paints in a cubist style the likes of Pablo Picasso with a surrealist twist reminiscent of Salvador Dali. “My first memory of actually working with art was drawing store plans. My parents used to do interior design for stores and restaurants,” Nicole Moan said. She also remembers building elaborate mud palaces for her Barbie dolls. Moan’s mother, Deborah Elders Riddle, paints primarily with oils and creates equestrian themes and realistic scenes of animals, gardens and people. Perhaps it was her mother’s sensibility for natural subjects that inspired Moan to transform her bathroom into a fantastic underwater world of handmade tiles. A ceramic mermaid’s tail sculpture slides up one corner of the room; a claw-foot bathtub is painted deep swirling ocean blue rimmed in gold, and a sculpted tile relief of cubist style hangs over the tub. LEFT | Model Stacy Saunders wears a ceramic sculpted corset and matching skirt, both by local artist Nicole Moan. Photos by Chris Lamdsberger | The Oklahoman.
C R E AT I N G C O R S E T S It was about 10 years ago that Moan created her fi rst corset. She needed something to wear to an art event. “I used to make fabric corsets, but I never really liked them very much because they just looked like everybody else’s corsets,” Moan recalled. So, Moan came up with the idea of making a wearable ceramic corset, but she wasn’t sure how to do it. When her husband came home from work that day, she asked him how he felt about wearing a ceramic corset — he rolled his eyes and said something like “Oh, God.” (“Now he wears my corsets all the time,” Nicole said.) And so the two found themselves the night before the event, lying on the floor, their torsos molded in two inches of wet ceramic material, blow-drying themselves. She remembers thinking, “This is the wrong way to make them.” Since then, Moan has improved her corset-making process, using her formal education in engineering. She found that dressmakers’ dummies weren’t very true to real women’s bodies, so she crafted her own ceramic bodies of varying sizes and torso lengths on which to design. Her corsets, more than 50 of which are for sale on her website, come in several styles and can be sized up to about a woman’s 20. Moan’s styles include keyhole corsets that dip low into the cleavage; some feature a fold-over collar style; some are waist cinchers; and some of Moan’s corsets are designed for men. Moan also sculpts ceramic wall hanging corsets and other wall art. All her art is shown on her website, www.nicolemoan.com.
