n no way can I take credit for Ben Folds performing with the Oklahoma City Philharmonic on Nov. 3– this city has the OKC Phil to thank entirely for this transformative event. But having Folds playing with our esteemed orchestra has been a dream of mine since 2005, when I first saw the DVD “Ben Folds and WASO: Live in Perth.” I reviewed the release for the Dec. 9, 2005 issue of The Oklahoman and was suitably knocked out by the arrangements – this was not a typical “pops” concert. Sometime the following year, I was talking with Michelle Winters, the marketing, sales and public relations director for the Philharmonic, and mentioned Folds as my ideal pops performer. I hoped it would happen someday, but several ducks must align in a row for something like that: the schedules of both the performer and the orchestra must fall into place, and furthermore, the Philharmonic had to decide whether Folds’ following dovetailed at all with the orchestra’s audience. Somehow, it worked. Now, here’s where you come in. BY GEORGE LANG In order for this to succeed and bring LOOKATOKC EDITOR more performers you love to the OklaGLANG@OPUBCO.COM homa City Philharmonic’s pops series, BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG this concert needs to be packed to the rafters of the Civic Center Music Hall. Tickets are reasonable – $35 to $70 – and the Civic Center is an amazing place to see a concert. The acoustics are nothing short of extraordinary: I still remember the pristine sound at Coldplay’s performance there on the “Rush of Blood to the Head” tour. For a piano-based performer such as Folds, this will be the perfect setting. And for those who just think of him as a judge on “The Sing-Off,” here’s a chance to find out what this guy can do in his natural environment. Tickets are available at 842-5387 or at www.myticketoffice.com. Do this: it is a rare moment to not only support the Oklahoma City Philharmonic and the important role this organization plays in the culture of our city, but to also show that high culture and alternative music can thrive together in Oklahoma.

SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE
It’s that time of the year again. I’m talking about the stretch of weekends leading up to the holidays where I can’t count the number of events on my fingers or toes. It’s the days where my calendar actively tries to give me paper cuts because of the event overload. No matter how busy I get, I still manage to find people whose busyness makes mine look comical. I ran into ACM@UCO student and Horse Thief frontman Cameron Neal during a lunch break. His Oklahoma City by way of Denton band caught my attention with the killer track “Warrior (Oklahoma).” In the middle of a cheese-drenched onion burger, Neal talked to me about the band’s plight. Multiple gigs as an opening band. Upcoming out of state shows. Music video ideas. An album due in December. He wasn’t slacking in the productivity department. Neither is another Okie by the name of Ryan Lawson. Drenched in folkie charm, Lawson has impressed me at multiple local shows and especially during his set at SXSW. In between his busy show schedule, he has managed to record two albums this year. His latest effort is “Hack & Saw Nation,” a country gem that’s not so much heavy on honky tonk but rather on heart. Lawson recruited a cast of his friends and new musical acquaintances to record with him inside of a Norman home back in February. The results were released this month, and I’m more than glad to have slowed down long enough to give the album a few listens. When Lawson performs live, he normally plays solo and has a one-sided shouting match with his audience. The newly expanded line-up beefs up his songs and gives them more character. “Hack & Saw Nation” is a solid effort from a dedicated Okie musician who’s only going to take bigger and bolder steps in the future. I know I’ll take some time to listen to these artists. Will you do the same?

‘ASHES & FIRE’ – RYAN ADAMS
hree years between Ryan Adams releases should not be unusual, but the former enfant terrible of alternative country released three albums in the space of 12 months in the mid-2000s, so the extended distance from his last formal album, 2008’s “Cardinology,” suggests that something will be different. Given his peripatetic nature, his fans always wonder which Ryan Adams they’re going to get: the modern-rock revisionist of “Rock and Roll,” the masterful altcountry balladeer who made “Heartbreaker” or even the cocky rebel playing slash-and-burn punk with The Finger. Given time to settle down, Adams finds himself in a classicist mode on his beautifully elegiac “Ashes & Fire.” There are no grand statements on the album, just Adams trying to discover, at long

last, who he has been all this time. On two separate songs, first single “Lucky Now” and album opener “Dirty Rain,” Adams makes allusions to sifting through the past in search of truth. “I feel like somebody I don’t know / are we really who we used to be?” Adams sings on “Lucky Now,” an elegant country ballad surrounded by similarly midtempo, contemplative songs, but “Ashes & Fire” does not sound like a songwriter stuck in a rhythm. Instead, Adams has proved for the first time since “Heartbreaker” that he can sustain a single mood, banishing interesting but often distracting quirks in favor of mature craft — his mournful pastoral ballad “Rocks” features some of his best vocals in years. Only on the surprisingly cliched “Chains of Love” does Adams sound distracted or uncommitted. “Ashes & Fire” was produced by Glyn Johns, whose son, Ethan Johns, pro-

It might not be the best collection of songs in his career, but after several years of uneven work, “Ashes & Fire” is the best album for Adams to make now. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

ueen’s second five albums have been reissued in deluxe two-CD editions collected in a box or sold separately, containing musical evidence of the band at its peak and at its most mediocre. “News of the World” (1977) features some of the band’s best songwriting, including their anthemic signature companion pieces, “We Will Rock You” and “We Are the Champions,” plus the hard-galloping “Sheer Heart Attack” and the overtly sexual rocker “Get Down, Make Love.” “Jazz” (1978) is one of their sleekest works, with Brian May’s multilayered guitars underscoring the irrepressible Freddie Mercury’s choirlike vocal effects on the fun-loving “Fat Bottomed Girls” and “Bicycle Race,” and then comes “The Game” (1980), easily one of their best and most accessible albums, toning
down the guitar-orchestra excess and operatic fervor in favor of straight-ahead pop on the piano-centered “Play the Game,” the disco-rock cross-pollination of “Another One Bites the Dust” and the rockabilly bounce of “Crazy Little Thing Called Love.” The same year, Italian producer Dino De Laurentiis tapped the band to dash off a soundtrack for his sci-fi epic, “Flash Gordon,” resulting in a glossy, mostly instrumental dud that the record label unwisely chose to put out as an official Queen album release. It’s included in the box but can be justifiably skipped by fans who opt to buy the discs individually. Finally, there is “Hot Space” (1982), an appallingly lackluster dance-pop album, with the band that once proudly denounced synthesizers now employing drum machines and candy-colored key-
boards on sappy tunes such as “Body Language” and “Calling All Girls.” The band’s classic duet with David Bowie, the eerily beautiful “Under Pressure,” is all that saves this album from being

Oklahoma City singer-songwriter Graham Colton talks about new professional independence, his new tour and new music. This is how it should have been from the beginning.
CLEAR EYES STORY BY GEORGE LANG, LOOKATOKC EDITOR
G
raham Colton is sitting on a couch in Norman’s Blackwatch Studios in early September while his voice comes out of a monitor panel six feet away. The Oklahoma City-born singer-songwriter is talking about his new professional independence while a burst of spontaneous creativity is taking place around him, and to hear him speak, this is the way it should have been from the beginning. “I’m not on my label anymore; I fired my management,” Colton said, but then his polite sensibilities take over. “Parted ways with my management. Obviously, the band that I got signed with early in the 2000s, I’m not playing with them anymore. These guys are my new band.” His new band includes Jared Evans, who co-owns Blackwatch with musician-producer Chad Copelin, and fellow singer-songwriter Brine Webb. A “scratch vocal” of Colton singing “You’re on Your Way” continues to emanate from the monitor while Webb lays down a new bass part and Evans plays atmospheric chords over the top. “The good thing is, Graham is a creative, open-minded guy,” Evans said. “He’s willing to come from a place that’s like, ‘Check this out. This is a different side of me.’ I think we’re consciously giving each song a different identity than it had, staying left-of-center for the sake of trying something new.” The result sounds radically different from the version released earlier this year on “Pacific Coast Eyes,” Colton’s first full-length album after leaving Universal Records. The new version of “You’re on Your Way” that came together in an afternoon, along with two more revamped “PCE” tracks and three new songs, are available on “Pacific Coast Eyes, Vol. 2,” released last week on GrahamColton.com and iTunes.

Show With Jay Leno,” “Today” and “The Ellen DeGeneres Show.” To top it off, “Best Days,” a song from Colton’s second Universal album, “Here Right Now,” was used in an “American Idol” sequence. But “Here Right Now” did not meet the label’s sales expectations, and Colton felt frustrated, lost in the shuffle in Universal’s stable of artists. In 2009, Colton parted ways with the label. His first step after getting dropped from Universal was to pour everything into writing and recording new songs, releasing tracks on GrahamColton.com as he completed them and issuing his “Twenty Something” EP independently in 2010. Then, he got to work on “Pacific Coast Eyes.” “Right after the time I was let go from Universal, I was kind of like, ‘Well, I’m an independent artist again,’ but I didn’t know whether to celebrate that,” Colton said. “I was making the album from the place of, ‘If the right label does come along and it’s a really good deal, maybe I should do it.’ But now, I’m celebrating the idea that I have this opportunity to do whatever I want.”
NATURAL EVOLUTION PHOTO BY STEVE SISNEY, THE OKLAHOMAN C O N T I N U E D O N PA G E 1 6
“I could have never gone to Universal and said, ‘I want to release the album again and offer alternate versions as bonus songs and maybe do some new ones,’” Colton said. “Right now is just a total experiment. I feel like I have the luxury to do whatever I want, when I want to do it.”
TASTE OF SUCCESS Colton’s first time in the spotlight had all the markings of an epic win, the launch of the next Oklahoma superstar. A star quarterback for Heritage Hall, Colton made The Oklahoman’s 89th annual All-State Football Team in 1999. After graduating, Colton attended Southern Methodist University in Dallas, where he developed his songwriting and performing skills and recorded a debut solo album in 2002. He and his band landed prime opening gigs for groups such as Train and Better Than Ezra, and that exposure led to being signed by Universal, which released the Graham Colton Band’s “Drive,” produced by Brendan O’Brien, in 2004. Suddenly, the doors swung wide open, and Colton was playing in front of huge crowds, opening for the Wallflowers, Counting Crows and the Dave Matthews Band. He played on all the major talk shows, including “The Late Show With David Letterman,” “The Tonight
What “Pacific Coast Eyes, Vol. 2” illustrates, Colton said, is the fluidity of songs. Before and after the initial release of “Pacific Coast Eyes,” Colton performed tirelessly, playing dates across the country and finding that those songs, when exposed to the give-and-take environment of live concerts, were still evolving. So now, songs such as “Everything You Are” sound quite a bit different from they did six months ago, and Colton said “Vol. 2” reflects that change. Those songs will be given more opportunities to evolve when Colton begins a tour partially designed to change how musicians take to the road. Colton recently began his “Go Natural” tour in Baton Rouge, La., and will travel using a compressed natural gas (CNG) vehicle instead of a conventional, diesel-burning tour bus. Throughout the tour, sponsored by CNGnow and Chesapeake Energy, Colton will report on his progress through video blogging and tour diary entries. Everything that happened with his major label contract forced Colton to rethink how he approached his business, but the most altered aspect of Colton’s new life as an independent artist is his connection to his music. He said that when he was promoting “Here Right Now,” he felt sealed off from the elements that mattered most to him. “I had the best and the biggest career milestones for my last album ... but I felt more distant in that process in terms of truly connecting,” Colton said. “I didn’t feel like I was on the ground. I am actively trying to reconnect on the ground level again.”

COVER STORY CONCERT PREVIEW 8 P.M., NOV. 3
BEN FOLDS
Ben Folds concert with a symphony orchestra is not just “Brick,” “Landed,” and “Zak and Sara” with strings grafted on top. The singer-songwriter, renowned for his piano virtuosity and razor wit, cannot abide using the talented musicians of the Oklahoma City Philharmonic as mere window dressing — he wants them to be his rock band. “My hang-up with doing these symphony orchestra shows had been that I’d seen a few where the rock band was on stage and the symphony orchestra were accompanying with really kind of ‘who cares?’ arrangements,” said Folds, who performs with the Philharmonic at 8 p.m. Nov. 3 at the Civic Center Music Hall. But Folds found a solution to the problem in early 2005, when he collaborated with several composers and arrangers in Perth, Australia for two performances with the Western Australia Symphony Orchestra. Those concerts, captured on the home video release “Ben Folds and WASO: Live in Perth,” showcased arrangements that placed the orchestra on a near-even footing with the performer, transforming songs such as “Annie Waits” and “Steven’s Last Night in Town” into true orchestral pop. That experiment led to a series of symphonic performances throughout Australia and the U.S., and since that time, Folds added several new arrangements by one of the most highly regarded orchestral arrangers in rock history. “A lot of that stuff has either survived, been revised or set aside, and then there have been a lot of other charts,” Folds said of the WASO material. “Over here, a lot of the charts we do now were done by Paul Buckmaster and a few others, but Paul does a very special thing — it’s his own thing.” Buckmaster’s “special thing” is a distinctively aggressive style of orchestral arrangement: his sound is all over Elton John’s albums from the early 1970s, particularly 1971’s “Madman Across the Water,” and he also wrote and conducted arrangements on David Bowie’s “Space Oddity” and the Rolling Stones’ “Sticky Fingers” — all before he was 30 years old. His recent work with Folds includes last year’s collaboration with novelist Nick Hornby, “Lonely Avenue,” and the Folds-produced “Who Killed Amanda Palmer?” by Dresden Dolls singer-songwriter Amanda Palmer. “He was a big fan of what I was trying to do, which was to not use a rhythm section — that is, not use bass, drums and SEE REST OF STORY ON PAGE 21

guitars, stuff like that,” Folds said. “He was excited about that, because of the challenge of turning the orchestra into the rock band and making it groove from the strings. “There are a lot of runs where the strings are very aggressive on the top and not so aggressive on the bottom, which I think is really interesting. Most all of the other arrangers have made it the double-basses and the lower brass and the percussion — they’ve leaned on them for the groove. Paul’s very opinionated about this. He says, ‘That’s not where the orchestra grooves,’” Folds said, affecting a patrician English accent. “So he makes it groove in the strings.”
THE ASCENT OF BEN
B
orn in 1966 in Winston-Salem, N.C., Folds developed a keen interest in piano when he was nine years old, but his earliest professional musical experience was as a drummer: he spent his junior high and high school years playing percussion in school orchestras, competing to play in regional and all-state symphonies. After high school, his percussion expertise led to band and session work in Nashville and a scholarship to the University of Miami’s Frost School of Music. While he excels at drums and piano and is proficient at bass and guitar, Folds has little love for including guitars in his mix — only a flirtation on 2001’s “Rockin’ the Suburbs” featured much six-string action. “Since I was 12 years old and writing songs and recording them on the jam box, I never used guitar,” Folds told this reporter in 2005. “Every time I heard guitar used, it added this ... nothing against Billy Joel, because I think he’s great, but it added an element of that that I didn’t want to hear. It sounds like a Burger King commercial.” In 1994, just as the grunge phase of the alternative rock revolution was cresting, Folds formed the guitaraverse Ben Folds Five, a trio featuring bassist Robert Sledge and drummer Darren Jessee. Early songs such as “Underground,” “Jackson Cannery” and “Boxing” drew from 1970s singersongwriters such as John, Joel and Todd Rundgren, as well as early 20th century

Tin Pan Alley traditions, but the trio’s energy and Folds’ penchant for barbed, profanity-spiked lyrics made them hits on college radio. The group’s second album, “Whatever and Ever Amen,” broke them nationwide: songs such as “Battle of Who Could Care Less,” “Kate” and “Song for the Dumped” became fan favorites, and a heartfelt ballad titled “Brick” crossed over into the pop charts and entered the Billboard Top 10. After one more album, 1999’s “The Unauthorized Biography of Reinhold Messner,” Folds parted company with Sledge and Jessee and embarked on a solo career with “Rockin’ the Suburbs.” Since then, Folds has released two official solo albums, 2005’s “Songs for Silverman” and “Way to Normal” in 2008, but much of his creative energy is funneled into side projects and short bursts of creativity such as the “Speed Graphic,” “Sunny 16” and “Super D” EPs, a collaboration with songwriters Ben Lee and Ben Kweller as The Bens, and his songwriting and production on William Shatner’s acclaimed “Has Been” album. Having discovered that songs such as “Not the Same,” “Landed” and “Selfless, Cold and Composed” had become favorites of college vocal groups, Folds embarked on an Alan Lomax-style recording tour, visiting campuses and recording groups performing his songs. He released these “field recordings” as “Ben Folds Presents: University A Cappella.” That record led to Folds appearing as a regular judge on NBC’s a cappella competition, “The Sing-Off.” When he was touring the country, recording the college groups for “University A Cappella,” Folds would critique the students and help shape their performances before committing them to the record. He said he is doing the same thing on “The Sing-Off,” only under more extreme conditions. “The difference now is that I now have to boil it down to 40 seconds,” Folds said. “The other difference is that someone’s going to get eliminated, and that’s really a drag — I don’t like that part at all. And then my Twitter blows up with people hating my guts because of who we’ve eliminated, and that’s going to happen no matter who goes. But that’s good, because they’re passionate about it.” Despite the new exposure, he said “The Sing-Off” has not greatly ex-

panded the audience for his music. “Don’t think so. I don’t think people are buying my records or coming out because they see me talking on television. And I didn’t expect it to,” Folds said. “I was speaking to an AES (Audio Engineering Society) convention in New York last night. Somebody asked something similar, and I said, ‘Well, I didn’t buy Ted Koppel’s record.’ But it’s a good gig, first of all, and it’s really tied into music education and it’s really positive. I like that.”
‘THE BEST IMITATION OF MYSELF
O
n Oct. 11, Folds released “The Best Imitation of Myself: A Retrospective,” featuring over 60 tracks spanning the past 16 years of his career. Folds said it was an unusual opportunity for him to showcase his actual songwriting, which he said can get lost in the showmanship that has become his calling card on frequent tours. “I’ve always been a little understated about my presentation of my songs,” he said. “There aren’t, for instance, photographs of me being moody, sitting in a window with a pen and paper, or over the piano and shadowy — it’s always been about presenting the songs as an event. So I’m not often viewed as a songwriter. Someone who’s familiar with my music might disagree with that, but I’m viewed more as a performer, someone who plays universities a lot.” In an effort to properly bookend the collection, he reunited with Sledge and Jessee on some new Ben Folds Five tracks. The renewed collaboration went well: the reunited group will enter the studio in early 2012 to record a new album. “This December, I’m going to lock myself in a room and write,” he said. Throughout “The Best Imitation of Myself,” Folds showcases the best possible recordings of his work, whether it was live or in the studio. If he judged that a song had not been properly represented on a recording, it did not make the cut. “‘Narcolepsy’ is a good example,” he said, referring to the opening track
from “Reinhold Messner.” “It’s a really interesting song. I’m not sure I know of anybody who’s written a song quite like that — I think it’s really unique. But I still don’t think it’s been captured properly on a recording. So, it’s not on the record. I think it’s one of my best songs, but I can’t find a version of it that makes me happy.” A dozen years after the song was released, Folds is still fighting it, trying to perfect the tightly crafted orchestral pop song about uncontrollable sleeping. He continues to search for the perfect rendition. “I don’t know,” he said. “I think it may have happened at some symphony orchestra shows.”
MAGIC
“T
here’s so many people in the orchestra and they come from so many walks of life,” said Folds, who arrives two days early for most symphony appearances to rehearse and get to know his fellow performers. “Some of them have never heard pop music and some of them are big Kanye West fans.” Folds feels camaraderie with his peers in orchestras and he goes to great lengths to champion local symphonies and stress the importance of supporting these groups at each performance. It is, after all, where he got his start. But getting into symphonic mode requires some adjustment: he said it requires a different type of concentration to perform his songs with an orchestra than it does in a band or solo environment. “I pull from my experience as a kid playing in symphony orchestras,” Folds said. “I was on the total opposite side of the conductor, but that was one of the many ways I learned music: playing percussion in orchestras. “On the side of the conductor that I am now, he’s following me. So I’ve relaxed to that. I have a pair of monitors where I hear one of the percussionists, so I hear the basic latency between what that person is doing and the drag of the strings. “It feels right once you get used to it,” he said.

I don’t need to go from zero to 60 in 6 seconds; I’d rather have a good stereo. And yet, I’m a sucker for racing games like Microsoft’s “Forza Motorsport 4” (for the Xbox 360, $59.99). Sure, it’s built to satisfy the most demanding gearhead, but it’s accessible enough for even the most fainthearted Sunday driver. At its easiest level, “Forza 4” practically drives the car for you, adjusting your braking and steering so you don’t hurtle off curves. You start off the World Tour solo campaign with a low-horsepower vehicle (in my case it was a Volkswagen Fox), but once you start winning events you earn faster rides. If you turn off the computerized assistance you earn more experience points, which gets you behind the wheel of high-performance Ferraris and Lamborghinis faster. World Tour bounces giddily around the globe, presenting a nice variety of tracks from America, Europe and Asia. One race may be on a highspeed Japanese oval; the next may be on a twisting path across Spain’s Montserrat. There are a few gimmicky events — knocking down bowling pins or slaloming through traffic cones — but most of the time you’ll be testing your mettle (and metal) against a dozen or so other

cars in your vehicle class. Truly hardcore speed freaks will want to get on Xbox Live and challenge other humans, and “Forza 4” offers as robust an assortment of online modes as one could ask for. Naturally, you can race against up to 15 other drivers in relatively straightforward events. A new “Rivals” mode lets you challenge your friends’ best times even if they’re not online. And you can indulge in sillier, “tag”-like games where you’re just trying to avoid — or create — contact with other cars. There are hundreds of cars from more than 80 manufacturers. If you’re the type who drools over car magazines, you’ll spend hours in the Autovista showroom, where you can walk around a vehicle, open the door and take a seat in the cockpit. Jeremy Clarkson from the BBC’s “Top Gear” talks you through the highlights, and his enthusiasm for everything on four wheels is infectious. Even the most mundane cars look pretty in Autovista, but the graphics really shine when you hit the road; if Switzerland’s Bernese Alps are this breathtaking in real life, I need to reschedule my next vacation. And while the music is bland, the overall audio design is terrific. Every motor sounds different, and the racket produced by 12 race cars jockeying for position will rattle your speakers. “Forza 4” is compatible with Microsoft’s controller-free Kinect system, but it’s tiring to use for more than a few minutes. Besides, you need a controller to appreciate the game’s use of force feedback, which delivers an impressive sensation of having massive amounts of horsepower at your command. And that’s what this franchise is all about: simulating the kind of automotive thrills you cannot get on your daily commute. “Forza 4” fully delivers on that promise. – Lou Kesten, The Associated Press

‘Footloose’ has plenty of moves
I
t takes a fan like director Craig Brewer to bring an iconic and beloved movie of the ‘80s like “Footloose” dancing into the 21st century without trampling over the fond memories of those who grew up in the decade of Walkmans and legwarmers and thrilled to the music and gyrations of Kevin Bacon’s breakout film. Brewer was 12 when the 1984 original hit movie screens and soundtrack faves such as Kenny Loggins’ bouncy theme song, Deniece Williams’ anthemic “Let’s Hear It for the Boy” and the romantic power ballad “Almost Paradise” by Loverboy’s Mike Reno and Heart’s Ann Wilson shot into the Top 10. It’s the movie, Brewer says, that inspired him to become a filmmaker, and he’s publicly professed a love for the pop-culture phenomenon and a determination to get it right not only for the audiences of 2011 but for all his fellow children of the Reagan era who might be outraged that a remake has even been attempted. It undoubtedly helped that Brewer enlisted as his co-writer none other than Dean Pitchford, who wrote
the original 1984 story and screenplay, said to be based loosely on events that took place in 1978 in the predominantly religious Oklahoma farm town of Elmore City. The update is set in the present. This time, Ren McCormack (newcomer Kenny Wormald) is transplanted from Boston (not Chicago) to the home of relatives in the small Bible Belt town of Bomont after his single mother dies of leukemia, and he immediately experiences a jolt of culture shock when he discovers that loud music and unauthorized public dancing are prohibited by law. It seems the Rev. Shaw Moore (Randy Quaid), who also is a city councilman, demanded creation of the ordinance three years ago after his son and four other teenagers were killed in a traffic accident after a night on the town. Rebellious by nature and never willing to bow to unreasonable rules, Ren soon runs afoul of local authorities and city officials, particularly the Rev. Moore when Ren falls for the minister’s troubled wild child of a daughter, Ariel (newcomer Julianne Hough). Wherever Ren goes, spontaneous bursts of dancing
seem to ignite, set to rousing new arrangements from Blake Shelton, doing his own version of “Footloose,” Jana Kramer offering a fresh take on “Let’s Hear It for the Boy,” Big & Rich issuing “Fake I.D.” and tunes from Zac Brown, Cee Lo Green and The Smashing Pumpkins. Wormald’s experience as a Justin Timberlake backup dancer and Hough’s multiple wins on “Dancing With the Stars” result in fancier footwork than Bacon and Lori Singer were able to pull off in their lead turns, but for presence, chemistry and sex appeal, the ‘84 couple blow the newbies off the stage. Still, Brewer’s film works on two levels. It’s an homage to the original, with visual references and spoken sentiments that should please longtime fans. At the same time, the director of “Hustle & Flow” and “Black Cat Moan” brings his trademark grittiness to bear here, creating a fresh retelling of this tale of teenage rebellion vs. adult narrow-mindedness that contemporary teen audiences can understand.

‘Restless’ will leave you wanting more
G
us Van Sant tries moviegoers’ patience with “Restless,” a teenage drama that is both too precious for its own good and far more poetic than it initially seems. The celebrated director of “Good Will Hunting” and “My Own Private Idaho,” Van Sant has proved adept at making adolescent angst compelling on the big screen. In less skillful hands, “Restless” could well have been reduced to self-conscious hipster posturing. Van Sant’s track record alone had me suppressing an eye roll when he introduced his latest film’s 16-year-old protagonist as he lies on the sidewalk drawing a chalk outline around his prone form. The deliberately named Enoch (Henry Hopper, son of the late Dennis Hopper, to whom the film is dedicated) has become disconnected from the world since his parents died in a car crash that almost killed him, too. Physically recovered, the teen whiles away his days attending the funerals of strangers and playing Battleship with his only friend, Hiroshi Takahashi (Ryo Kase), the ghost of a World War II kamikaze pilot. At one memorial service, Enoch and teenage waif

Annabel (Mia Wasikowska) meet cute at the snack table. Also aptly named, Annabel instantly identifies Enoch as a funeral crasher and is understandably intrigued. Despite his determination to ostracize himself, he is drawn to the girl’s whimsical demeanor, her fervent admiration of Charles Darwin and her passionate dream of becoming a naturalist. But Annabel’s lively spirit belies her dire physical condition: She has terminal cancer and is only expected to live a few more months. Rather than shrink from her, Enoch offers to help her prepare for death. Initially, the newfound couple is insufferably twee together, with his look-how-quirky-I-am black retro suits calculatingly matched with her adorable thriftshop chic ensembles. Even more off-putting are their quick, glib comments that are less whistling-througha-graveyard coping mechanism and more smug, aren’t-we-clever wisecracking. The palpable heartbreak Annabel’s nurturing sister Elizabeth (Schuyler Fisk, daughter of Sissy Spacek) is going through just barely keeps the first half of the film watchable. Oh so gradually, Van Sant peels away at the oddball artifice and unveils some genuine emotion, tempered
LOOKATOKC.COM
by the characters’ divergent experiences and personalities. As her final days draw near, Annabel subtly reveals her fear and sadness as she gently strokes the hair of a dead young woman, while a series of outbursts proves that Enoch’s pent-up anger and grief are beginning to harshly break free. She may be from Australia, but Wasikowska is quickly becoming Hollywood’s newest it girl. As with Cary Fukunaga’s electric adaptation of “Jane Eyre” and Tim Burton’s uninspired version of “Alice in Wonderland,” she is the best part of “Restless.” In his film debut as an adult, Hopper doesn’t have his father’s uncommon charisma, but his performance does show promise. First-time screenwriter Jason Lew’s story doesn’t present any new notions about mortality that could make the film truly memorable, though its otherworldly sensibilities provide an interesting contrast with the cancer comedy “50/50” and its air of authenticity While “Restless” doesn’t quite achieve profundity, Van Sant guides it beyond quaintness to poignancy. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘The Thing’ fails to frighten
T
hat classic “creature feature” “The Thing” earns its third treatment with a film that’s so enthralled with its actual “thing” that it forgets to be scary or suspenseful. A decent cast and a pristine glacial setting are wasted on a movie of alien transmutations and alien dissections that lacks urgency, or even a sense that it’s very cold in Antarctica. The Norwegians have found something Down There — beneath the ice. And they want to keep it secret. So they drag a too-young American paleontologist (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) with a bit of experience dealing with ancient frozen corpses and a few other folks in to figure out what it was. The Norwegians, led by the arrogant Dr. Halvorsen (Ulrich Thomsen), smell a Nobel Prize in this discovery, “our visitor.” Keep it quiet. No radio contact with other bases on the frozen continent, even though there’s a
storm coming in. The Americans — Kate Lloyd (Winstead) and the helicopter pilots, Carter (Joel Edgerton) and Jameson (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) — are instantly wary. Something big, with claws, is carved from the ice. And before you can say “You don’t know what you’re dealing with,” it’s preying on the Norwegians and the triggerhappy Americans. Here’s what works in Dutch director Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.’s version of the thrice-told tale, which they’re calling a prequel. The location, what they use of it (British Columbia and frozen corners of Canada), is stunning. The effects — a shape-shifting creature of teeth and tentacles — are on the money. The Norwegians are an amusing bunch, profane in English and in subtitled Norwegian. And hats off to Winstead (“Scott Pilgrim vs. the World”) for her wide-eyed reaction and breathless
alarm at this beast and the attendant peril. But it’s an infuriatingly static picture — actors walking around when they should be running, ruminating when they should be panicking, generally failing to convey fear and pick up the pace. That’s the director’s fault. Empathy for characters doesn’t build, nor does the paranoia Winstead’s character keeps putting into words. This alien can take on the form of its victims, so they don’t know who is real and who isn’t. Forget the obvious foreshadowing, the “logic” of an Antarctic base full of flamethrowers and grenades (no improvising a defense against this monster). Try to forget the earlier, superior versions of the tale. This “Thing” still doesn’t deliver much more than the odd jolt or provoke any praise, other than “cool effects.”

FOUNDATION

B E AUTI F U L
Heather Warlick Moore | Mood Publication Editor Shapewear can camouflage many figure flaws, but unlike the shapewear your mother or grandmother wore, today’s foundation garments don’t have to be unsightly or uncomfortable, says Rhonda Shear, an actress, comedian and longtime host of “USA: Up All Night.” In fact, shapewear can be downright beautiful, and every woman, regardless of her size, shape or style, can benefit from it. “Wearing the right foundation garment can eliminate unsightly panty lines, bra bulge and give the wearer the confidence to comfortably wear things in her closet she might not otherwise,” Shear said. As a television personality, Shear learned the art of illusion and camouflage in a fashion sense from some of Hollywood’s top costume designers. Her line is available on Home Shopping Network (http://fashion.hsn.com) and at www. rhondashear.com. “I am a woman, with curves, and I know what works and doesn’t in the market today,” Shear said. “Many brands out there are designed and manufactured by men, and let’s face it, they can’t always understand what women need and crave in intimate apparel.”

SHAPEWEAR CONTINUED
Shapewear comes in many styles from bright colors with lace and embellishments to very simple and utilitarian. And there are several levels of shapewear strength, said Amber Brooks, manager of The Lingerie Store, 7636 N Western. “There’s light control, which is just kind of for smoothing. Someone who’s pretty small can

Today’s foundation garments are quite different from those of yesteryear. T The world of shapewear may have begun with binding, uncomfortable and obstructive lace-up corsets, but today’s shapewear is nott only beautiful but often even comfortable.

When she started designing her own line, Rhonda Shear Intimates, “I did so hoping to use the art of camouflage and illusion I learned from costumers in Hollywood in a line that was functional, fe feminine and comfortable. My line is all about comfort, support and flattering fits for all sh shapes and sizes.” SIZING UP BRAS SIZI Bras B Br as are the most basic of all shapewear, but often, o women are uncomfortable in their bras because they’re wearing the wrong size, Brooks said. “Actually, that’s just a starting place,” Brooks said. “It’s not scientific. And typically when women try to measure themselves, it’s wrong.” That’s why it’s important to get sized by a professional such as Brooks and the other employees at The Lingerie Store and at Women’s Health Boutique in Northpark Mall. Also, variations in brands and styles often mean you wear one size in one bra and another size in a different bra. “Every woman, regardless of size or shape has some bit she wishes were smoother, lifted, or smaller,” Shear said. “A great shaping garment compliments your unique shape by solving those problem areas and drawing attention to assets worth fl aunting.”

hile the east side of Norman has no shortage of residents, it’s long been bereft of great places to feed them. Perhaps it’s fitting that a concept based on the Far East — O Asian, 105 12th Ave. SE — has begun to change the thinking on which direction the hungry should turn as they travel north or south along the railroad tracks. And with football season going strong, Norman’s borders will be in town over the next few months. Historically, potential diners landed some place along the Ed Noble Parkway, in Brookhaven or even downtown for those unafraid to park and walk. But where others saw a bare cupboard, Dirk and Stephanie O’Hara — who had made the money to open O Asian in elder care and limousine service — saw opportunity. “Our research tells us most of the growth in Norman is going to have to go east,” Dirk said. So, how does an entrepreneurial Irish couple end up owning an Asian fusion restaurant? Enter chef Nui Chuntarasoun. “Nui joined my husband’s guy’s night out group a few years ago,” Stephanie explained. “He and Dirk got to talking, and the rest is history.” Nui learned his craft from working with his mother at Pad Thai on Campus Corner. “I learned everything about cooking from my mother,” Nui said. “But I have a passion for food. I travel around the world, looking for great flavors to bring back and share.” Taking over an old Pizza Hut, they gutted the building and started from scratch. “There was a barbecue place in here for a while,” Stephanie said. “They left literally everything in the restaurant.” O Asian opened in January 2008. The amount of work done to resurrect the interior is only exceeded by the amount of pas-

sion that goes into every plate coming out of the kitchen. This is a beautiful setting with matching beautiful food. These days, fusion has become a dirty word in some culinary circles. The negative connotation comes more from mismatched cuisines. The fusion at O is mostly performed between related Asian cuisines: Japan, China, Vietnam, Korea, Malaysia and Thailand. This is like fusing Oklahoma cuisine with Texas, or Arkansas — cousins if not siblings. That said, O Asian does serve filet, K.C. strip and rib-eye steaks. The hand-trimmed chops are beautifully cooked, but you won’t get them with a baked potato. Instead, your 28-day aged beef comes with a tamarind sauce on the side, steamed Asian-style vegetables and jasmine, fried or garlic rice. The restaurant also offers Bulgogi and Hibachi-style steak. The handmade Crab Rangoon on the appetizer menu looks like it’s stuffed with a golf ball, but inside is succulent, creamy crab. The spring rolls, also made daily by hand, are a great way to start your palate. The remainder of the menu contains a selection of Thai-style curries, noodle and rice bowls, wok-prepared items, soups and salads and sushi. Flavors are bold here and subtle there, and the food is edible art. The sushi, as prepared by Bao Lu, was fresh and approachable and served with aplomb. The Thai curry is simple, the heat adjustable. This is a great place to try it for the first time. Of course, that could be said for pretty much everything I tried at O Asian. There are some new, complex flavor combinations for the discerning palate and plenty of approachable standards expertly prepared. All of this in a beautiful setting with a full bar and impressive wine list, and you begin to wonder how long before east Norman becomes a culinary destination. Probably a while, but O Asian is a start. And a delicious way to start or finish your game-day experience.
