GEORGE L ANG
Year 5 for NMF
I
n the early 1990s, my friend Taylor Wilken had an apartment above Mister Robert Furniture, the ultra-posh furnishings store on Main Street in Norman, and it was like a Brooklyn loft that was picked up and dropped into the middle of Oklahoma. There was a dividing wall between the bedroom area and the main living room, but essentially it was a big, blank space with an exposed brick wall, with two tall windows opening onto downtown. It was a great place to hang out — in our pre-married days, my wife rented one of the smaller studios toward the back of the building, and while Wilken never said it, we probably made complete pests of ourselves, treating his apartment like a communal living room. In those days, street festivals never happened in downtown Norman, and with the exception of Liquid Lounge and Kelly’s, the bars that regularly played host to indie acts, downtown Main Street was not a major destination for music. Wilken had a great apartment, but the only reason to lean out the window was to drop a key to a friend on the sidewalk. After both of those bars closed, the only music to be heard on Main Street was usually wafting from stereos above 109 E Main. For the college students who regularly rent those apartments, the advent of the Norman Music Festival in 2008 was like having a luxury box for one of the best live music events of the year. For the first three years of the festival, when the Main Stage was set up just east of the train tracks, I stood in front of Mister Robert’s to watch the Polyphonic Spree, Of Montreal and Dirty Projectors, but the best vantage point was clearly Wilken’s old apartment. The residents knew it, too — I could tell from the bodies crammed just inside the windows, taking advantage of a uniquely indooroutdoor festival view with a refrigerator full of store-bought beer and access to a familiar toilet. The Norman Music Festival, taking place April BY GEORGE LANG 26-28, is free, but you could charge for that kind LOOKATOKC EDITOR of hassle-free concert experience, and I would GLANG@OPUBCO.COM not be surprised if someone did it. I’m sure sevBLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG eral years’ worth of Gen Xers who attended OU in the early 1990s and lived above Mister Robert mourned the fact the festival did not happen during their years above the furniture store. Last year, the Main Stage flipped over to the other side of downtown, near Porter, probably to avoid the periodic noise that occasionally augmented the previous years’ shows. It was a solid decision — Portugal. The Man and Other Lives will not have to compete on the same decibel level as the Heartland Flyer when it comes barreling through the Santa Fe Depot. And yet, I feel bad for new residents of those Mister Robert apartments. They lost their luxury box. It’s possible that some of them are happy — they don’t care about amazing, free live music and like to get to bed before midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. But even without perfect sight lines for the Main Stage, people who live there have, at least for one great long weekend at the end of the school year, one of the best addresses in Oklahoma.

NATHAN POPPE
The perfect
guide for
NMF5 Spring has sprung, and it’s time for Oklahoma’s biggest free music festival to make its fifth appearance. Hipsters, weirdoes and people watchers will unite around bad carnival food and good music for three days. The Norman Music Festival not only showcases some of the nation’s indie heavyweights but also gives local bands much needed appreciation. So in order to make the celebration easier, I have made a short list of just a few exciting shows of NMF5. There are more than 200 acts to experience this year so this wasn’t a simple task. Here’s to a fun NMF5 and to an even bigger NMF6.
NATHAN POPPE All about music and the shows you should see, and shouldn’t see around Oklahoma.

Check for the right body language watched an episode of “Anderson Cooper 360” a couple of weeks ago — I was at the doctor, so I didn’t have much choice. The segment featured body language expert Janine Driver discussing how to tell if a person is lying. The subtleties of what your body is conveying to another person fascinated me. Small things like repeating a question could mean the other person is lying. Popping your elbow leisurely on the chair makes people think of you’re easy to talk to. Some think this is straight hocus-pocus, but if it was phony, why are so many FBI agents using it to catch criminals? Poker players wear sunglasses so the opponents can’t read their faces. I think this could be beneficial for singles frequenting bars and clubs looking for a match. Below is what your body language is telling others.
UPON FIRST ARRIVAL The first impression can be the most important encounter with a person, no matter if it’s a potential employer or a potential date. Driver says in a Huffington Post article that picking a location to be for the night is key. If you are at the bar, she says to move to the center to order a drink and then turn around and stay there. Consistently changing where you are throughout the night makes you appear livelier and more fun. How you hold your glass is particularly interesting. Dr. Glenn Wilson studied more than 500 drinkers. He found that people who use their glass of wine as a pointer in conversation and lean towards the drink could be gossip queens. Someone taking short swigs to not miss out on talking during a conversation might be a fun-lover.
KNOWING WHAT THE BODY LANGUAGE MEANS
LACEY LETT “A Night Owl” is focused on what’s going on in nightlife news for LookatOKC.
Once you’ve gotten through the initial phase and you find the person you want to talk to, look for signs if they’re into you or just being nice. If you’re a guy, check to see if the woman flicks her hair. Exposing her neck is a sign that she is vulnerable. Men tend to mimic women’s body language if they’re into the woman. Also, look down. Feet pointed towards you is a sign of positive body language, and if they are pointed away, you might look elsewhere. The touch is a key sign they’re into you. If they find ways to brush up against you or touch you, they might be ready to get your phone number. Driver says to never leave without a goodbye and hope for a second meeting. If you know there’s potential, then you don’t have to feel awkward about asking to see them again. Chances are, they’ll say yes.
WILL THERE BE A SECOND DATE? A second date is the next question in the grand plan. One way to tell is by knowing if they are lying. Driver calls herself the “Lyin’ Tamer.” The former federal law enforcement officer has used her skills to read criminals’ body language. There are sure signs someone is lying. She says frequent blinking is a sign of deception, as well as small shoulder shrugs and a person’s tongue protruding. If you see this, run. If you see a relaxed state and louder voice, you know they’re into you. Experts believe that what you say accounts for 7 percent of effective communication while body language accounts for 55 percent. This means if you’re into someone and you want them to notice you at an OKC bar, check your body and make sure you’re giving off the right signals.

‘THE FLAMING LIPS AND HEADY FWENDS’ – THE FLAMING LIPS
f you’re a Flaming Lips fanatic. Warner Bros. Records is only pressing a measly 10,000 copies of “The Flaming Lips and Heady Fwends,” the fearless freaks’ much ballyhooed collection of quirky collaborations with a crosssection of dizzyingly disparate players. Irreverent pop powder keg Ke$ha commands you to dance to the incessant pounding of a bass drum pedal and discordant chordbanging on “2012” as she declares “Well it’s 2012 / People going to hell / Put me under / Your acid spell,” and a robotic little voice keeps insisting “You must be upgraded ... You must be upgraded.” The irresistible handclapping noisefest seems about to build to freak-out levels before suddenly gliding into a hauntingly beautiful synthesizer soundscape with Ke$ha assuming a more
soothing vocal mode. Then the rhythmic raging rises anew in the final 30 seconds of the piece. East Coast rapper Biz Markie is also contributing to the din, but it’s uncertain what that contribution is. Autumnal, indie-rocking Bon Iver joins forces with Wayne Coyne and company for the eerily majestic aural edifice of distorted electronic keyboards and melancholy vocal harmonies that is “Ashes in the Air,” while Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros help fashion the shimmering acoustic guitar and synthesizer colors of the pastoral “Helping the Retarded to Know God.” Aussie avant-rocker Nick Cave brings his menacing spoken-word imagery to the behemoth-size buzz-guitar, heavenly-harp-and-chimes space-jam “You, Man? Human?” Yoko Ono brings sexual urgency to the primal beats and spacey twang of “Do
It,” which is exactly what she chants repeatedly throughout, throwing in a couple of strangled cries along the way. Her stylings are still an acquired taste, but so are several of the tracks from “Fwends,” particularly the cacophonous buzz and drone of “That Ain’t My Trip” with My Morning Jacket’s Jim James, and the willfully grating sonic muddle and monotony that makes up the better part of “I’m Working at NASA on Acid,” featuring stormy experimentalists Lightning Bolt. But the brighter moments make this brave new album worth owning, especially the moving, piano-accompanied ballad meditation on life and death, “I Don’t Want You to Die,” with Coldplay’s Chris Martin, and their devastatingly gorgeous, ethereal cover of “The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” featuring the mesmerizingly languorous and soulful voice of R&B songstress Erykah Badu. The 13 songs are pressed on two high-quality, multicolored vinyl platters packaged in custom art jackets and LOOKATOKC.COM
bagged together (and yes, you need a turntable). No two discs will look exactly alike. It’s a must-have for Wayne worshippers. But if you miss out on this limited Record Store Day treasure, don’t despair, kids. The Lips are working on an album of new music as you read this, due for regular wide release just months from now. — Gene Triplett, Entertainment Editor

‘BLUNDERBUSS’ – JACK WHITE
F
ollowing half a decade of side projects and the dissolution of the White Stripes, Jack White’s “Blunderbuss” is a knockout, a concise and remarkably focused distillation of White’s gifts as a multi-instrumentalist, songwriter and standard-bearer for rock ‘n’ roll. From the opening electric piano figure on “Missing Pieces” and the hard-bashing high school drama “Sixteen Saltines,” White is playing entirely to strengths: dispensing with the circumscribed musical format of the White Stripes sets him free to explore his fully realized notions of rock in its classic forms. From the songwriting structures to the production, “Blunderbuss” feels entirely organic and often bracingly primitive: during a passage of the female rebellion anthem “Freedom at 21,”

White rolls his vocals into one stereo channel, as if there were only four tracks at his disposal. His powerful duet with Ruby Amanfu, “Love Interruption,” powers forward with minimal percussion and a “Son of a Preacher Man”-style keyboard — not much is needed beyond the obvious passion at its core. White doesn’t seem to be obviously aiming for retro sounds on “Blunderbuss,” but it frequently sounds like the great albums Jimmy Miller produced for the Rolling Stones in the late-1960s and early 1970s, especially on the Southern pastoral ballad “Hypocritical Kiss,” the rambling pianorock of “Hip (Eponymous) Poor Boy” and the Jerry Lee Lewis/Stones barn burner, “Trash Tongue Talker.” Most of these songs could have worked as White Stripes’ tracks, but as a solo act, White is able to give these songs exactly what they need. LOOKATOKC.COM
The closing song, “Take Me With You When You Go,” bounces along on a 6/8 time signature reminiscent of Dave Brubeck’s “Take Five” before exploding in fuzztones and manic high harmonies, and its hard to imagine it being executed so exquisitely within the Stripes’
deliberately primitive structure. White is a classic overachiever with many irons in the fire, but on “Blunderbuss,” he concentrates all his creative heat. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘FROM WHERE YOU ARE’ – SUNDAY LANE
oth California sunshine and Oklahoma earthiness infuse “From Where You Are,” the full-length debut album from singer/songwriter/musician Sunday Lane. A Tulsa native now living in Los Angeles, Lane released last summer her first EP, “Bring Me Sunshine,” which helped her snag a gig at the 2011 Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival, a spot on Music Connection’s Hot 100 Unsigned Artists List and two featured songs on the season premiere of the CW show “One Tree Hill.” Showcasing her crystalline vocals, keen musicianship and insightful songwriting, “From Where You Are” seems bound to keep the buzz building around the 22-year-old chanteuse. A classically trained pianist, Lane
shows off her fleet fingers on the opening track, “Get to You,” which also spotlights her lovely, slightly twangy vocals. She acknowledges her precocious ways and her bubbly side with “A Little Too Young,” a track that proves a few well-placed horns and singalong-inducing “who ohs” can go a long way. From the casually naturalistic opening to the insistent galloping percussion, “Let Me Go” gives Lane a chance not only to stretch her voice but also to swap her sweet songbird persona for a sexy rocker chick attitude. Lane teamed with fellow songwriter Hannah Crockett for the foot-stomper as well as the piano power ballad “Waltzing with Fire.” The baroque, melancholy beauty of “Painted Blue,” a heartbroken ode to lost love, makes it one of the standout tracks of “From Where You Are.” In the spirit of the best pop music,
Lane’s debut LP works on multiple levels, with melodious guitar chords and earnest piano harmonies that tickle the

ears and intriguing, thoughtful lyrics that hold up to repeated, closer listens. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

ou might say music festivals are in John Gourley’s blood. You might also say the voice and songwriter of Alaskan neo-psych band Portugal. The Man comes from Woodstock stock. His father was there at the granddaddy of outdoor rock fests back in 1969. “He went there a day early and left a day late to help set up and help take it all down and clean up,” Gourley said of his dad in a recent phone interview. “He just wanted to be there and help out.” This weekend, Gourley will be helping out with Norman Music Festival 5 when Portugal. The Man headlines the three-day event that features 278 musical acts performing on 21 outdoor and indoor stages along the 100, 200 and 300 blocks of Main Street on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Other prominent acts on the bill include Stillwater cinematic rock experimentalists Other Lives, Texas singer-songwriter Hayes Carll, Ohio indie-rockers Red Wanting Blue and lo-fi dream-pop veterans Olivia Tremor Control, to name but a few. NMF5 marks the first time Portugal. The Man — newly signed to Atlantic Records — have ever headlined a music festival. “We’ll see how everything goes,” Gourley said. “But I feel good about the band. I feel like everybody’s worked really hard and always tried to be conscious of what’s happening around us. So hopefully we’ll take some tips from the bands that we’ve seen headline festivals, like Black Keys, Flaming Lips, Arcade Fire, all that.” >>> SEE STORY ON NEXT PAGE

Listening to the richness and warmth of the orchestral, Brit-pop inspired music from “In the Mountain In the Cloud” — their July 2011 Atlantic debut and sixth full-length album overall — it’s remarkable to find that Gourley and co-founding guitarist Zach Carothers came out of the icy rural wilderness around Wasilla, Alaska, a frigid no-man’s land bearing few signs of musical life whatsoever. “We really did,” Gourley said. “Like when I was a kid we lived in a cabin on an icy lake. I mean it was literally an icy lake. There was no town. It was just my dad had built this cabin on a lake. He went out there to train dogs, because he was going to run the Iditarod. And he eventually did.” Fortunately, when Gourley’s dad moved to Alaska not long after his Woodstock experience, he brought along his record collection, so Gourley’s younger years were not devoid of musical nourishment. “Pretty much all of the music he had with him was 1970 and before, even earlier,” Gourley said. “So we listened to a lot of Beatles, Sam Cooke, Motown, pretty much oldies radio stuff. So that’s kind of what we’ve been. “It’s so closed off that you’re not really introduced to things as quickly as people in the lower 48 ... So you kind of miss a lot.” Of course, there was newer stuff to be found on the radio if you searched the dial in the right places, and eventually some of the better music began to catch Gourley’s attention. “I think it was in high school when I started driving myself and actually doing my own thing. And I discovered things like Oasis, Nirvana. I mean bands making really, really good music, and some doing it with just, in Nirvana’s case, very extreme simplicity. Or what I thought to be simplicity. It’s pretty obvious it’s not as simple as that. “It just kind of became what I wanted to do. It was hearing other bands. I guess Oasis was the most obvious, doing what the Beatles had been doing, and making something new with it.” And a few “lower 48” bands sometimes did manage come within driving distance of home. “I had seen the Jesus Lizard there, which was crazy to me,” Gourley said. “There were 20 people there — may be. And I was just standing in the background going, ‘Man, I hope that naked guy doesn’t jump on me. I just wanna watch the show.’ It was really intense. I’d seen things like that. I’d seen Pantera come up there. Mostly metal bands.” Gourley and friends began tinkering with in>>> SEE STORY ON NEXT PAGE

struments and coming up with tunes, but after a while it became apparent that points south might prove more conducive to creativity, and maybe even some gigs. “We thought, ‘You know, maybe this band is bigger than our parents’ garage.’ So we left, and it’s worked out, man, but I think a lot of that was the work ethic that we got from growing up in Alaska. I think that’s all you do is you work. You build houses, work construction, plumbing, be an electrician, and I think those jobs set us up to be very dedicated to whatever we put our minds to, whether it was music or, like I said, construction.”
The band took up housekeeping in Portland, Ore., and it was there that Gourley learned song construction, drawing inspiration from other bands on the city’s lively music scene. In 2005, the band released an EP, followed in fairly rapid succession by “Waiter: ‘You Vultures!’” in 2006 and “Church Mouse” in 2007, both on the independent Fearless label. The band then financed their third record themselves, enlisting trombonists, trumpeters, and violinists to fashion their most eclectic album up to that time, “Censored Colors.” In 2009, the song “People Say,” from the album “The Satanic Satanist” found a measure of suc-
cess on alternative radio, and in 2010 ventured further into electronic experimentation with “American Ghetto.” In addition to churning out an album a year, Portugal. The Man has made good use of MySpace and PureVolume to promote themselves, and they’ve logged an incredible 1,000-plus shows in their short seven years together. Now, that Alaskan work ethic has paid off with a major-label deal. And Gourley won’t stand for any indie purists’ accusations of selling out. “It’s the opposite of the idea that people have, >>> SEE STORY ON PAGE 23

OTHER LIVES
RED WANTING BLUE
>>> American indie pop outfit Other Lives formed as an instrumental project in 2004 under the name Kunek. Based in Stillwater, Kunek (who eventually added vocals to the mix) released one album (Flight of the Flynns) for Play Tyme Records in 2006 before making the transition to the similarly themed Other Lives. The group’s eponymous debut album was produced and recorded by drummer/engineer Joey Waronker (Walt Mink, Beck, R.E.M.) and released in late 2008. After getting a boost by having songs appear on Grey’s Anatomy, the band released its second album, Tamer Animals, in May of 2011 for TBD Records. FROM ALLMUSIC.COM
>>> Red Wanting Blue formed at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, in 1995. The initial lineup consisted of lead singer Scott Terry, Michael Epp, Ryan Eisert, and Jerrod Myers. On September 6, 1996, they self-released their first album, Velveteen. The Image Trigger followed on April 4, 1998. Model Citizen (April 3, 2000) featured the rhythm section of Mark McCullough (bass) and Jonah Dolan (drums), replacing Eisert and Myers. The fourth album, Sirens, appeared in 2001, and Souvenirs of City Life was released in 2003. In July 2003, Dolan left the band to be replaced by Mark Stepro. Their sixth album, Pride: The Cold Lover brought them television placements on the shows Love Monkey and Life Is Wild. After the release, guitarist Greg Rahm joined, making the group a quintet. Epp left in October 2005, and John Kengla joined as lead guitarist, while Ed Davis was added as a percussionist. In 2010, the band finally signed to a record label, pacting with Fanatic Records, an imprint of EMI/Caroline, which re-released These Magnificent Miles on July 27, 2010. FROM ALLMUSIC.COM

which is ‘evil major label. They’re just gonna bring you down and water down your music.’ “And it hasn’t been like that. It’s been me growing, and I feel like it’s been such a positive experience to talk to people that love music and care about the music and let me really do more than a lot of the indie labels we’ve worked with allowed us to do. It’s been really, really great. “It’s the ability to actually sit down and make the record that you wanted to make, which Atlantic allowed us to do,” Gourley said. “It was having the right resources to make our record, having the confidence to make the record.” And it’s the opportunity to headline festivals like NMF5. When news went out that Portugal. The Man had signed to the event, Gourley heard from his friend Josh Berwanger of the Lawrence, Kan. Indie band The Only Children, who was ecstatic. “The second we got booked, he called us and was just sayin’, ‘Oh my God, you’re playing that festival,’ and his guitarist had texted me as well and they all seemed so excited ...Josh gave us a little bit of a rundown (on the Norman event). I didn’t get the history as much as it should be really cool and it’ll be a lot of fun. So we’ve all been looking forward to that.”
HAYES CARLL >>> Born Joshua Hayes Carll, Texas singer and songwriter Hayes Carll received his first guitar at the age of 15 and almost immediately began writing songs, influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, John Prine, Kris Kristofferson, Dead Poets Society, and the Beat novels and writings of Jack Kerouac, all of which continued to reverberate in his mature songwriting style. After a stay in Austin, he returned home and continued to play gigs in the Galveston and Houston area, picking up a loyal following. He signed to Compadre Records and released a debut album, Flowers and Liquor, which garnered him favorable comparisons to Townes Van Zandt, in 2002. Turning down a deal from Sugar Hill Records, Carll released his second album, Little Rock, on his own Highway 87 Records in 2005. Carll signed with Lost Highway Records a year later in 2006. Now firmly established as a next-generation singer and writer in the style of maverick country-folk, Carll released a second album for Lost Highway in 2011. FROM ALLMUSIC.COM
PEELANDER-Z >>> Attempting to stand out among your peers when you practice your art in the rather insane world of Japanese pop/ rock/punk is no mean feat, but New York City based Peelander-Z certainly made some serious waves. Blending elements of the Power Rangers, Japanese and American pop culture images, sci-fi, and pro wrestling, Peelander-Z won fans and friends from a wide cross section of the pop audience, appearing on a number of compilations, as well as festivals and conventions. The group, made up of Japanese born Kengo Hioki (aka Peelander Yellow – vocals, guitar), Kotaro Tsukada (aka Peelander Red – bass, vocals), and Kazuki Yamamoto (aka Peelander Blue – drums, vocals) came together in 1998. As “legend” has it the three were born on the Z region of the planet Peelander, and their colorful garb was not merely costume, but their “alien” skin. Their debut recording, the mini-album Peelander-Z, was released in 1999 the buzz the trio was creating led to their first American television appearance, on Comedy Central’s Upright Citizens Brigade that same year. 2001 would see the release of the debut full-length, Rocket Gold Star, as well as the band’s first appearance at the New York CMJ Music Marathon. After a busy 2007, which included the band’s first DVD release (Peelander Is Fun!), the band was shaken up in 2008, when it was announced that Peelander Blue (Kazuki Yamamoto) was being “called back” to the Planet Peelander, as he was next in line for the crown of the kingdom of his home world. The actual story as to why Yamamoto left the trio is far more mundane – family commitments – but Peelander-Z was able to soldier on, when Peelander Green (Akihiko Naruse) signed on to further the group’s momentum. In 2009, back to full strength, Peelander-Z released its fifth album, P-Pop-High School, and spent that spring touring their new collection. FROM ALLMUSIC.COM

Shot blockers have plenty of fans
S
erge Ibaka was hosting an event a few weeks ago when a young fan sauntered up and shared his dream. It was no surprise that the lad wanted to be a pro ballplayer. What shocked Ibaka was the little boy wanted to be just like him. “He said, ‘Hey, Serge Ibaka, when I grow up I want to be a star. I want to play defense like you.’” Ibaka said. The exchange stood out to Ibaka. To theThunder’s starting power forward, it was a reminder that his role, albeit not the most appealing, still is one that others look up to. “That’s something good for the young kid to know. I might not get 30 points every night, but with my defense I can be a star, too,” Ibaka said. “Most of the time, young kids want to be like Russell Westbrook orKevin Durant … It was kind of a surprise for me.” Ironically, teammates and coaches at times still have to instill that mindset to Ibaka. But after a slow start to the season — a result of what some thought was his desire to be more offensive-oriented — Ibaka has been nothing short of sensational with his defensive effort. In just his third season, and still just 22, Ibaka has become the league’s best rim protector as a shotblocker. He’s registered at least 10 blocked shots in three games this season (the first player to do so since Shawn Bradley in 1995-96) and is closing out the season in grand fashion. In nine March games, Ibaka is averaging a staggering 5.3 blocks … and he’s done it despite averaging a mere 25 minutes this month. “Serge got the capability of being the best defensive (power forward) in the league,” said Kendrick Perkins matter-of-factly. Last year, Ibaka led the league in total blocked shots with 267. But his 2.41 average ranked third behind Andrew Bogut (2.58) and JaVale McGee (2.44) because they both played fewer games. This season, Ibaka has run away with both block categories. His 3.63 blocks per game not only lead
This season, Ibaka has run away with both block categories. His 3.63 blocks per game not only lead the league, but they are more than a block per game more than second-place McGee (2.33). Ibaka also is the only player who will finish with at least 200 blocks this season. Photo by SARAH PHIPPS, The Oklahoman
the league, but they are more than a block per game better than second-place McGee (2.33). Ibaka also is the only player who will finish with at least 200 blocks this season. “Last year, I was just trying to do the maximum

I can do. And I knew I could do better,” Ibaka said. “My goal is every year, I need to try to do better and better to get better and better at everything.” Slowly, Ibaka has done just that. He’s diversified his dominance and improved his defensive fundamentals to develop into more than just the league’s premier shot-blocker. A small example can be seen in Ibaka’s foul count. In 82 games last season, Ibaka committed 267 fouls, a 3.3-average. Through 60 games this season, he has just 163 fouls, a 2.7-average. Ibaka displayed flashes of his growing ability to contain his matchup in man defense when he helped hold All-Star Blake Griffin in check in each of the past two meetings with the Los Angeles Clippers. In both games, Ibaka did a terrific job of staying down and remaining square as Griffin went through his progression of pump fakes and pivots. On March 21, Griffin had just seven points on 3-of11 shooting in 33 minutes. Last Wednesday, Griffin scored just 16 points on 6-of-15 shooting in 35 minutes. Ibaka might get another chance at Griffin at some point in the playoffs. “He’s improved a lot on his individual defense, but he could get a ton better,” Perkins said. “His pickand roll defense is getting better, and I just feel like Serge don’t understand how much he can change the game if he gets, like, a wild African-type crazy.” In the meantime, Ibaka already has transformed into a Defensive Player of the Year candidate, joining a shortlist that includes reigning back-to-back-toback winner Dwight Howard, Miami forward LeBron James, Memphis guard Tony Allen andChicago forward Luol Deng. It’s a development few even figured possible at the start of this season, and definitely not when Ibaka was a mysterious selection with the 24th overall in 2008. “If you factor in the minutes, obviously his stats will increase,” said Thunder coach Scott Brooks. “I think he’s definitely in the conversation.”

2011-2012 NBA SEASON
28
T
As the playoffs approach, the key for the Thunder will be matchups. If they finish with the No. 2 seed, the matchups are favorable. S T O R Y B Y B E R R Y T R A M E L , S T A F F WRITER
he playoffs approach, and the Thunder has a championship-caliber roster. But the NBA postseason is not a crapshoot of a few capable squads. Not all teams, not even the elite few, are created equal. Several factors help determine the eventual king. Momentum. Seeding. Matchups. Which for the Thunder means uh-oh, uh-oh and ho-ho. A silver lining has emerged. The Thunder is 6-6 since that April Fool’s Day rout of the Bulls. A team that once seemed slump-proof now has stagnated twice. A 5-5 stretch immediately after the All-Star break, now this. Even in victory, the Thunder struggles, like its narrow escape at Minnesota against the injury-depleted T-Wolves, who haven’t won in April since 2009. Spurs mastermind Gregg Popovich often talks about finding the right rhythm for his team, going into the playoffs. Says how his team is playing is more important than where it finishes. Maybe so. If so, the Thunder flunks. The Spidermen have run hot and cold for more than a month. Their rhythm is off beat. The data doesn’t totally support Popovich. Going back to 2000, five of the 12 eventual NBA champs played at a winning percentage above .700 in April, two had losing records and five had winning percentages between .500 and .700. Four of the 12 NBA Finals losers played above .700 in April, three had losing records and five had winning percentages between .500 and .700. So teams with differing kinds of stretch-run momentum have >>> SEE STORY, CONTINUED ON NEXT PAGE
excelled in the playoffs. Plus, seeding seems to be a better indicator of playoff success. Of the 28 champs crowned since advent of the 16-team playoff format, 18 were No. 1 seeds (64 percent). Of the 56 conference champions, 32 were No. 1 seeds (57 percent). That’s a better ratio than the rhythm/momentum crowd. Not that it’s any better news for the Thunder, which once owned a hefty lead in the Western Conference. The Thunder likely has squandered homecourt advantage in a potential West finals against the San Antonios. But hope has emerged as the Thunder slowly slips. If OKC finishes as the No. 2 seed, its matchups look much more promising. Don’t underestimate matchups. Every team is equipped to combat certain teams better than others. I don’t claim to know the league-wide matchup problems, but I know the Thunder’s. The Thunder clearly wants to avoid Memphis. The Grizzlies were a tough out in the 2011 playoffs, upsetting the top-seeded Spurs, then taking the Thunder to seven games in the West semifinals. Defensive Doberman Tony Allen is a nightmare for Kevin Durant or Russell Westbrook or James Harden or whoever he decides to guard. Plus these Grizzlies have scoring punch with both Rudy Gay and Zach Randolph healthy; they have spent precious little court time together in the last 12 months. The Thunder, too, should want to avoid the Clippers, who bring out the worst in OKC. The Clips have won three of four from the Thunder this season, including two blowout victories. Chris Paul seems to get in Westbrook’s head, and even Durant lost his composure when the Thunder scored just 25 secondhalf points against a team not known for defense. Thus the good news. The Clippers and Grizzlies likely will finish fourth and fifth in the West. If the Spurs finish No. 1, the Thunder’s worst matchups are on the other side of the bracket. The Boomers would feel much more comfortable with a road that includes some combination of the Nuggets, Mavericks and Lakers to reach the West finals.

ECO-CHIC FASHIONS ARE FUNCTIONAL AND FABULOUS

Kermit the Frog of “Sesame Street” and “The Muppet Show” didn’t think it was easy being green. To him, green was just a color. Fast forward a few years, and “being green” has become a term synonymous with environmentally responsible. And it’s getting easier every day to be green, especially when it comes to the way we dress. Eco-chic, earth-friendly, green couture, upcycled and sustainable style are among terms used to describe clothing and accessories that are friendly — or at least friendlier — to the environment. It’s the result of a movement to protect the planet that started 32 years ago with the first Earth Day. Since then, technology and innovation have erupted with plastic bottles being melted down to produce yarn and fabric. Creative people turning old products into new ones with even greater value. Companies as large as Nike and as small as Juniper Ridge, which specializes in perfume, soaps, room sprays and essential oils, are finding ways to incorporate sustainability into their products. At the same time, more shoppers are learning the importance of organic cotton, raw denim, bamboo, cork, soy fabrics, hemp, dying processes that use fewer chemicals or vegetable colors, and fair trade practices. Shop Good in downtown Oklahoma City strives to educate its customers about products that are friendly to people and planet, and in the process it gives a percentage of each sale to a cause, community or charity. The store sells T-shirts made with water-based ink; all-natural rubber flip-flops that are recyclable, biodegradable and dyed naturally; organic cotton jeans; and totes and clutches upcycled from burlap coffee bags. “We try to make sure everything we sell is ethically made,” said Justin Falk, who owns the store with his wife, Audrey. Ethically made means fairly traded goods and services, healthy working conditions and environmentally responsible production.

Two decades before Shop Good opened, another store across town already was focusing on products made of recycled components, items that were handmade and manufacturing processes that were chemical-free. “In 1989, our business plan included five principles that drive our buying,” said Jeanette Koenig, owner of Route 66 in 50 Penn Place. She said she continues to strive to find items that are handmade, made in America, made with recycled components that are chemical-free and made with personal care, and anything else that is a metaphor for the road of life.

One of the store’s standout fashion pieces is a sweeping lavender and pale yellow coat made from vintage curtains by Love Apples by Stephanie. Another is an Allison Parris coarse organic silk skirt lined with fabric made from recycled plastic bottles. It’s fun and flirty, eco-friendly and made in America. Koenig said about 80 percent of the store’s fashion is made in America. “I want to make sure people in the garment district keep their jobs,” she said, adding that customers are interested in products made in the U.S. as well. “It’s one of the ways we can rebuild our country.”
NAT I O NA L A P P E A L Environmentally friendly clothes and accessories aren’t just showing up in boutiques, thanks to large companies such as Nike, Eileen Fisher and every shoe manufacturer that’s embracing cork soles and uppers.
Material by Kellie Lewis bow ties, made from fine men’s silk ties, available at Route 66.
Nike takes materials from old shoes and shirts, grinds them up and transforms them into new products. It has expanded its use of recycled polyester and discarded plastic bottles to transform performance material. Even special yarns are used to reduce waste on Nike shoes. Eileen Fisher uses a dying process on its women’s clothing that requires fewer chemicals, less water and less energy. The company also uses organic cotton and other eco-friendly fabrics. Organic cotton is important to the environment because healthy soil and healthy plants attract fewer pests. Harmful insects are trapped rather than sprayed. Eileen Fisher also has a fair trade relationship with workers in Peru who knit organic cotton. “As consumers are becoming more aware of reducing our carbon footprint, being green has gained a strong following,” said Melissa Merriman, regional communications director for Dillard’s, which carries Eileen Fisher, Nike and Eco Swim by Aqua Green. Eco Swim suits are made from 100 percent recycled content. What’s more, they’re flattering, comfortable and stylish. While many people are willng to try green products including everything from apparel to toilet paper, if it isn’t as good as the original, few people will want to use it. Just try to tell the difference between naturally dyed silks and ones that use chemical processes. Or a swimsuit made of recycled contents versus one made with nylon and spandex. When fit, feel and function are good, it’s easy being green.

ack in the early 1990s, Sheree Holloway fell in love with artisan bread and left for France to learn how to make it. Once an accountant, she returned as a baker with enough passion to found, with her husband Peter, a restaurant concept called Cafe 501, which has been going strong — now in two locations — since 1996. But the passion for bread-making didn’t reduce to embers there. While Cafe 501, 501 S Boulevard in Edmond, has become a local mainstay for lunch and dinner, expanding with its second store at Classen Curve in fall of 2010, Holloway has spent the better part of the last two years developing a new bread for 501. The result is Cafe 501’s new rustic loaf, which looks a lot like a sourdough loaf but without the sour flavor because of the way the starter is stored. That’s important because this is a bread made from natural yeast. A little of the starter dough born about a year and a half ago is a part of every rustic loaf that emerges from the ovens in the 501 bakery. “This is bread with an old soul,” said bakery manager Kaci York. “It’s flour, water and salt. It’s amazing how those three simple ingredients can lend so much flavor.” The other thing about Holloway and York’s baby that differentiates it from a lot of fresh-made bread is its shelf-life. I took a loaf home and tried it the day it was baked and then again four days later and found little discernible difference. This artisan bread has a soft center with nice crusty edge, making it a prime sopping bread for serial soppers like me. Toasted lightly and streaked with butter, this bread doesn’t need a lot of help but that hasn’t stopped new chef Roy Erwin from implementing it into the considerable sandwich arsenal at Cafe 501, including a new meatball. It’s also ideal for bruschetta. Holloway said the rustic loaf is also available at Boulevard Steakhouse. “It’s bread made the way it’s been made and passed down for generations,” Sheree said. This bread is just further proof of the ongoing evolution of the food scene and its offerings in and around Oklahoma City metro these days. Don’t try the rustic loaf unless you’re prepared to make a long-term commitment because you’ll have a difficult time eating only one.
