ou just think you have everything you need. Andy Rooney, the “60 Minutes” contributor who died this month at age 92, complained about many, many things, but his key cranky talking points were the unnecessary things in life. He once railed against shampoo — all he needed to do was rub a bar of soap on his head in the shower, which cultivates a wonderful mental image. Rooney was not known for his thick, lustrous locks, but I’m sure there was a point in all this. Not all innovations are entirely necessary, sure, but in my lifetime, toothbrushes have evolved from straight pieces of plastic with bristles on the end to absolute delights in dental hygiene comfort. I might not need the latest innovations from Oral-B, but the ergonomics certainly take away the strain from my mouth-centered ablutions. In that sense, call me Anti-Rooney. I’m the wretched excess guy. When I replaced my iPhone 3GS last month with the 4S, my old model became a dedicated Spotify unit for the living room, which means that when my family unwraps Christmas presents in a few weeks, we’ll be soundtracked by 220 (at last count) holiday favorites. This obviates the need for the local allChristmas station or a Pandora channel, where there is always the danger of Elmo and Patsy showing up to ruin all the fun. Granted, endSTATICBLOG less bandwidth means that TruTV has room for Leif Garrett as a commentator on “World’s Dumbest,” but mostly I’m seeing positive outcomes. Other than the obvious sense of community kids enjoyed when discussing “Happy Days” in 1975 because everyone had the same four channels available, I don’t pine for old tech. Typing hundreds of strings of BASIC code into my ﬁrst personal computer so I could play a ﬂickering version of Zaxxon is my go-to “When I was your age” story. So this year, LOOKatOKC is offering its gift guide, which showcases the new and exciting ways for everything to be much, much better. Starting on page 24, you’ll see things that must be under the tree, otherwise 2012 will be the year you stayed bummed out until your birthday. I’m not saying you need everything. But isn’t it good to know that, in the Age of Everything, it’s all here?

Time to break the walls down

SHOWS TO SEE, OR NOT TO SEE

usic is out of control in Oklahoma. That’s one of my favorite things about music in our state. A majority of local talent is able to create whatever music it wants. There’s no one to tell musicians what songs they can or cannot create. I know the same can be said for music throughout the country, but my point remains the same. There aren’t many rules or restrictions to making music. I’ve seen enough ﬁreworks exploded and instruments shattered onstage to know that’s true. Every month, I think of Oklahoma’s music scene as a clean canvas. As the days pass and the amount of shows grow, I notice more musicians stepping up to mark the blank setting. I don’t see a limit on where music can take bands with talent and drive. Stillwater’s Other Lives are slated as the opening act for several Radiohead tour dates in March. Radiohead could have paired up with almost any band on the planet but they chose an Okie quintet with two albums under its belt. Incredible. Oklahoma Citybased punk band Red City Radio spent a considerable amount of time touring this year and even landed gigs in Germany. Not too shabby. Guestroom opened its third location in Bricktown. How amazing is it to have another channel to discover interesting music? I hope bands in Oklahoma aren’t afraid to try new things or sound unlike anyone else. Again, there’s no ceiling for weirdness or new ideas. The more risks taken the better. The more times something different is tried then people have more time to realize they have the chance to see something they haven’t seen before. And that’s what gets people to shows. The excitement that accompanies seeing something for the ﬁrst time. My column’s goal is focusing on who’s stirring the local music stew and what experiences are worth talking about. There’s no telling what can happen here, and I don’t see much evidence proving otherwise.

‘CEREMONIALS’ – FLORENCE + THE MACHINE

hile “Lungs,” Florence + the Machine’s 2009 debut, displayed a wide variety of styles, Florence Welch was most convincing while singing dramatic, chest-pounding Goth epics such as “Rabbit Heart (Raise It Up)” and “Hurricane Drunk” that suggested an R&B diva sitting in with the Mission U.K. or The Sisters of Mercy. On “Ceremonials,” Welch’s immaculately theatrical follow-up, she and producer Paul Epworth focus almost entirely on replicating those moments, which gives Welch ample opportunity to emote. But with most of the songs on “Ceremonials” operating at crisis urgency, Welch and Epworth almost forget to include those necessary low-key moments for reﬂection before the next storm of soul hits.

Welch is a belter par excellence, and on ﬁrst single “Shake It Out,” she’s given the space to soar as the choir launches her heavenward. “And it’s hard to dance with a devil on your back, so shake him off,” Welch sings on “Shake,” one of several times she mentions demons and spirits on “Ceremonials.” That single, along with “Lover to Lover” and “Spectrum,” veers closer to Welch’s church-bred soul side than to her mystical, wandering-the-moors tendencies: When she sings “No salvation for me now” on “Lover,” she sounds like she’s pounding on the cathedral doors, demanding forgiveness. Deny her at your peril. But “Ceremonials” can get bogged down in portent — the power ballad “Never Let Me Go” sounds like a Jim Steinman production without the run-on sentences — and Welch could use some opportunities to keep some lung power in reserve. Epworth, who also produced

the best parts on Adele’s “21,” is clearly bent on amplifying Welch’s strong suits, but despite its obvious great moments, “Ceremonials” often resembles what might happen if Epworth were to make Adele sing 14 variations on “Rolling in the Deep” on her next album, “23” or “24.”

Give Welch credit for singing out when so few performers even bother, but dynamic range and knowing when to hold back would make “Ceremonials” much more worthy of ardent celebration. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘DOWN THE HATCH’ – THE DAMN QUAILS

on’t let the title fool you: The Damn Quails fly high on their debut album, “Down the Hatch.” Norman-based singersongwriters Bryon White and Gabriel Marshall emerge as the premier duo of the red dirt music scene with their first album, which also marks the debut of 598 Recordings, the upstart new label owned by Great Divide frontman Mike McClure and business partner Chance Sparkman. The Damn Quails’ penchant for pretty melodies, poetic lyrics and fine musicianship becomes apparent from the first single, the folksy toe-tapper “Fool’s Gold.” As each of the 14 earthy tracks comes “Down the Hatch,” it becomes increasingly clear the fertile Oklahoma music scene has nurtured a pair of exceptionally talented country-folk performers.

They have developed a rootsy sound that is distinctly Oklahoman and uniquely their own. The album opener, “Better Place to Stop,” calls to mind the kind of road anthem Woody Guthrie might have penned right until the electric guitar solo starts wailing; even then you get the sense Woody would have appreciated the song’s everyman vibe. White and Marshall take turns on lead vocals and share guitar duties, and they are such a well-matched pair that their voices sound different yet cohesive from song to song. Although your ear can’t help but be caught by the lovely, layered instrumentation, both singers are adept at conveying emotion, such as the melancholy loneliness of the partiers in “Midnight Swagger” and the mournful resignation of the heartbroken suitor in “Another Story.” The sweetly pleading ﬁddle- and

mandolin-infused ballad “Through the Fire” isn’t just an album highlight, it may be my favorite love song of the year. The Damn Quails are playing weekly shows at 10 p.m. Mondays at The Deli through Nov. 28 and will perform a Thanksgiving concert at the Norman

venue. They also have several other Oklahoma shows planned through the end of the year. Since “Down the Hatch” is gaining the duo national attention, local red dirt fans should plan to catch the Quails in concert while they can. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘HURRY UP, WE’RE DREAMING’ – M83

83’s gorgeous and breathlessly nostalgic album from 2008, “Saturdays=Youth,” was ﬁlled with songs for imaginary John Hughes ﬁlms, gauzy synthesizer ballads for the culmination of Molly Ringwald’s yearning. Anthony Gonzalez, the 30-year-old French mastermind behind M83, obviously studied the songcraft, instrumentation and romanticism of the music that was popular in his childhood, and his followup, “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming,” favors the same era. But “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming” feels less like the synthesis of remembered melodies, and on guitarheavy anthems such as “Reunion” and “New Map,” Gonzalez makes synth-rock that truly rocks. Attribute part of that change to Gonzalez’s new vocal approach. Rather

than singing in lower, sonorous registers, he approaches stadium-busting tracks such as “Claudia Lewis” as if he was trying to reach the cheap seats. There is less input from vocalist Morgan Kibby this time — she is the singer who made “Saturdays=Youth” songs such as “Up!” sound like lost Kate Bush gems — but Gonzalez makes up for it by rattling the rafters on “This Bright Flash” and the pounding coda of “My Tears Are Becoming a Sea.” M83 can still weave nostalgia with the best. Like Cut Copy’s excellent 2011 album “Zonoscope,” echoes of childhood radiate through “Hurry Up, We’re Dreaming.” Take the main section of “Claudia Lewis,” which borrows its percussion and mood from New Order’s “Thieves Like Us,” or the twee-pop “Raconte-Moi Une Histoire,” in which a young boy talks about the

magic properties of a tree frog as Gonzalez ramps up the playful synths. If anything, M83 ﬁnds a satisfying balance between such backward-looking moments and the forward movement

‘TAKE CARE’ – DRAKE

rake’s second album, “Take Care,” could not exist without the hyper-confessional hip-hop of Kanye West’s “808s and Heartbreak” and “My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy” — West is the brilliant king of artful oversharing — but much of the spirit of Drake’s beautiful but viciously hurt “Take Care” comes from Marvin Gaye’s “Here, My Dear.” That 1978 double album, recorded while Gaye was emotionally lashing out during his divorce from Anna Gordy, is a brilliant train wreck, an exercise in total discomfort that feels like listening to Mom and Dad fighting. On the single “Marvin’s Room,” which was recorded in the same studio, Drake is just as blistering, attacking his ex’s choice of a lover while simultaneously trying to remind her of the good times: “I’m just saying that you could do better,” he sings after a hateful string of invective. The cover image depicts Drake surrounded by gold baubles but conspicuously alone at a dinner table: Money will not buy happiness, and it only amplifies the sadness. On “Doing It Wrong,” featuring Stevie Wonder delivering a plaintive harmonica solo, Drake raps to the woman in his faltering relationship: “We sure make it feel like we’re together, ‘cause we’re scared to see each other with somebody else.” The beautiful title track, a duet with Rihanna, is all about pleading for another try on one side and being pitied on the other. The mood on “Take Care” is almost uniformly dark, an album filled with passive aggression and drunk dialing. And yet “Take Care” is remarkably beautiful, filled with the sparse sonics hinted at with last year’s “Thank Me Later” and the atmospheric gloom that pervaded the much-admired mixtape “House of Balloons,” released earlier this year by Drake’s Toronto-based compatriots, The Weeknd. Drake’s rap flow has improved, and he barely indulges in the tiresome, hashtag-style raps that appeared on “Thank Me Later.” Other than unadulterated jams such as “Under Ground Kings” and his duet with Nicki Minaj, “Make Me Proud,” “Take Care” will not be the life of any party, but it feels uncommonly honest. Gaye, that great balladeer of conscience, passion and tragedy, would thank him now. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘J. Edgar’ full of stellar performances

or a public figure who made uncovering other people’s secrets his business, J. Edgar Hoover proved remarkably adept at keeping his own. Shrouded in notoriety and mystery, the founding director of the FBI is a fascinating and challenging subject to chronicle in a Hollywood biopic. But four-time Oscar-honored director/producerClint Eastwood (“Million Dollar Baby”) and Academy Award-winning screenwriter Dustin Lance Black (“Milk”) delve into the facts, the rumors and, most importantly, the relationships with the goal of getting to Hoover’s humanity with their new film, “J. Edgar.” Featuring strong performances from Leonardo DiCaprio, Judi Dench, Naomi Wattsand Armie Hammer, the biopic skips back and forth in time to touch on the highlights and low points in Hoover’s nearly half-century tenure leading the Federal Bureau of Investigation, a position that made him one of the most powerful people of the 20th century. Nearly 40 years after his death, Hoover’s closely guarded personal life continues to attract considerable speculation, while his long and controversial tenure as founding director of the FBI tends to draw extreme, often conflicting viewpoints. With all the wild stories and conjecture about Hoover’s sexual preferences and possible crossdressing tendencies, “J. Edgar” could have become a trashy, ripped-from-the-tabloids affair, but Eastwood is too classy a filmmaker to wallow in salacious tittle-tattle. In fact, one could argue that the <<<

biopic is more refined and sympathetic than Hoover deserves, given his penchant for illegal wiretaps and smear campaigns against those whom he perceived as a challenge to his power. For his part, Black mostly succeeds in presenting a fair but not especially flattering portrait of Hoover as both the patriotic law-enforcement leader determined to protect the public from Bolsheviks and gangsters and champion the development of forensic science, and the jealous, manipulative power-monger who kept blackmail-ready secret files on presidents and first ladies and considered Martin Luther King Jr. a dangerous liar. The film first introduces filmgoers to the elderly but iron-fisted Hoover, who has decided to dictate his memoirs and the history of the FBI to a series of young agents because “it’s time this generation learned my side of the story.” The flashbacks to the past start with a literal blast, with the 24-year-old Hoover taking a leadership role in the Bureau of Investigation within the Justice Department when his boss, Attorney General A. Mitchell Palmer (Geoff Pierson), is nearly killed in a bombing tied to communist radicals. The biopic continually shifts and finds parallels between his early days pursuing Bolsheviks and anarchists, leading the hunt for bank robbers and starting the first crime lab and federal fingerprint database and his later years clashing with Robert Kennedy (Jeffrey Donovan), illegally wiretapping John F. Kennedy and falsifying ugly rumors in an attempt to force King to decline his Nobel Peace

Prize. At the heart of Hoover’s relating of his professional exploits beats the “crime of the century”: the engrossing investigation into the kidnapping and death of Charles Lindbergh’s (Josh Lucas) 18-month-old son. But the soul of “J. Edgar” is the relationships with the few people closest to him: his domineering mother, Annie (Dench, who may well present the most chilling movie matriarch since “Psycho”), who will tolerate nothing less than greatness from her son; his loyal longtime secretary, Helen Gandy (Watts, who makes the most of her small role), who turns down Hoover’s marriage proposal but accepts his job offer, which includes keeping his secret ﬁles; and his faithful right-hand man and associate director, Clyde Tolson (Hammer, who is building an impressive resume after his twin turn in “The Social Network”), who becomes his near-constant lifelong companion. Since the 1940s, rumors have circulated that Hoover and Tolson were lovers; Black’s script speculates it was more complicated than that. Cinematographer Tom Stern creates an appropriately shadowy ﬁlm, and a team of makeup artists convincingly transforms DiCaprio, Hammer and Watts into senior citizens. But Eastwood’s surehanded direction, Black’s time-shifting storytelling and the stellar performances make “J. Edgar” worth watching. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

Visually, ‘Immortals’ is simply amazing

o the considerable credit of director Tarsem Singh, “Immortals” looks like no other swords-and-sandals epic, including its closest older cousin, Zack Snyder’s “300.” But indelible visuals mask a half-baked script and a dispiriting inertia during scenes that should have been moving. Henry Cavill, the next Superman, shows he can hold viewers’ attention as a stonemason who leads humanity in its war against a vengeful god, but he’s not given the necessary tools to truly climb Olympus. Cavill’s Theseus is the son of a fallen woman, a man born with too many strikes against him, but he is fortunate enough to be guided by a mysterious old man (John Hurt) who is wise in the ways of battle. Theseus prepares his skills at a moment when they are most needed. King Hyperion (Mickey Rourke) is bent on freeing the Titans from their rock-encrusted crypt to

unleash all fury on humanity, and so he leads his army on a bloody rampage through Greece in search of the Epius Bow, a powerful weapon that can free the Titans and keep a stranglehold on the mortals. Theseus is clearly the chosen one, an instrument of the Olympians (Luke Evans and Isabel Lucas play Zeus and Athena as supermodel-like gods) to put down the Titans, and he is aided by mortal ally Stavros (Stephen Dorff) and the oracle Phaedra (Freida Pinto) in his quest. But Hyperion and his legions take no prisoners — their campaign is characterized by vicious, unrelenting butchery. This means that Singh, a gifted visual artist who brought his baroque sensibilities to bear in ﬁlms such as “The Cell” and “The Fall,” sends half of his cast through a meat grinder in “Immortals.” Blood and guts becomes the dominant motif as bodies get bisected and viscera splatter on the rocky shores of the Aegean.

And yet, there are moments of pure brilliance, such as a breathtaking tidal wave and a superimposed shot of Hyperion’s insectlike helmet over a Grecian ship. But for all of Singh’s visual ﬁnesse, “Immortals” falters when the humans are most involved. Dorff’s Stavros is far too modern, a surfer-dude wiseacre constantly putting the moves on Phaedra like a drunk at a bar, and Cavill, though mostly solid throughout, loses steam when he is supposed to be peaking, particularly during Theseus’ disappointingly wan “St. Crispin’s Day”-style speech to rally the mortal forces. That scene required a Henry V/William Wallace level of intensity that never materializes — at least Rourke’s Hyperion is fully committed to his carnage. The resulting ﬁlm is still a testament to Singh’s artistic acuity, but the dialogue, which too often sounds improvised and imprecise, deals a nearly mortal blow to “Immortals.” — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

irector Bill Condon gives “Twi-hard” fans the extravagant wedding and romantic honeymoon they’ve been longing to see with “The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn — Part 1.” Unfortunately, the Oscar winning director fails to deliver true terror or high-stakes drama in the birthing room or on the battlefield in the first of his two-movie finale in the blockbuster film franchise based on Stephenie Meyer’s best-selling paranormal romance novels. Summit Entertainment takes a page from the Harry Potter movies with “Breaking Dawn,” Meyer’s 750page fourth and final book in the saga, which Condon and screenwriter Melissa Rosenberg divided into two movies that were filmed at the same time. Although it would be easy to dismiss the split decision as a mere cash grab, Meyer’s book provides ample action for two movies, plus a natural breaking point between the two parts. The first part opens with the big moment the saga’s fervent fans have been eagerly awaiting since the book came out in 2008: Human heroine Bella Swan (Kristen Stewart) marries her chivalrous vampire fiance Edward Cullen (Robert Pattinson) in a lavish ceremony that gives face time to all the series’ periphery characters, from Bella’s high school frenemy Jessica (Oscar nominee Anna Kendrick) and her dad and mom (Billy Burke and Sarah Clarke) to the various members of the Cullen

clan and the fellow human blood-eschewing vampires in the Denali coven. Calling the wedding a “moment” might be an understatement, since Condon spends a solid half-hour on the nuptials. But considering the anticipation among “Twi-hards” and the furor over April’s royal wedding, it’s hard to fault the ﬁlmmakers for milking it. Hot-tempered werewolf Jacob Black (Taylor Lautner), Bella’s best friend and spurned suitor, shows up at the reception to give his best wishes to the happy couple. But he quickly retracts his blessing and nearly starts a vampire-lycanthrope throwdown when he learns that Bella and Edward are going to attempt to have a typical honeymoon before the bride’s transformation into a vampire. Considering Edward’s predatory instincts and superhuman strength, Jacob fears a human Bella might not make it through her wedding night in one piece. Once Edward whisks Bella off to a secluded tropical paradise, Condon again takes his time and fulﬁlls fan fantasies with the honeymoon. He takes the PG-13 rating as far as he can, conveying genuine passion and even some humor in the couple’s long-awaited consummation. Their marital bliss is short-lived. Bella soon learns that she is pregnant, and the half-human, half-vampire baby quickly proves that it is both superstrong and fastgrowing. Edward hauls his bride back home to Forks, Wash., vowing to get “that thing” out of her, but Bella is

determined to protect her unborn baby. As the fetus saps Bella of her vitality, prevents her from eating normal food and develops at an astounding rate, the Cullens wonder if even an emergency vampire conversion will be enough to save the determined mom-to-be. While Jacob is enraged to see the girl he loves bruised and emaciated from carrying “that monster,” werewolf alpha male Sam Uley (Tahlequah-born Chaske Spencer) has an even more dramatic reaction. The pack leader decides Bella’s baby poses an unacceptable threat to the community and declares war on the Cullens, forcing Jacob to make a difficult choice. The first half of “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” moves slowly, but at least it taps into the appropriate emotions. The second half zips along rapidly but remains alarmingly flat and lifeless. In particular, Jacob’s heart-wrenching decision is made so quickly that its import seems lost, and the pivotal birthing scene, so compelling in the book, comes across as devoid of any real desperation, danger or life-or-death consequences. Even the addition of a few fight sequences fails to generate any real excitement. Still the final moments of “Breaking Dawn: Part 1” live up to the hype, offering a crimson-hued glimmer of hope that the polarizing conclusion of “The Twilight Saga” will make for interesting viewing. — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘Modern Warfare’ delivers for third time

ctivision’s “Call of Duty” releases are to video games what Michael Bay movies like “Transformers” are to cinema. They’re loud and ﬂashy, they deliver state-of-the-art digital effects, and they don’t have a coherent thought in their heads. If playing the latest “CoD” campaign doesn’t give you a headache, trying to make sense of its convoluted, preposterous story will. “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” (Activision, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99; Wii, $49.99) begins with New York City under attack from Russia. How did we get here? In the previous chapter, an American undercover agent got himself framed in a terrorist attack at the Moscow airport, and now the Russians are retaliating. Both sides, however, are merely pawns being manipulated by Vladimir Makarov, who’s bent on destroying the West and returning Mother Russia to its former glory. So begins a symphony of destruction that lays waste to cities and landmarks all over the world. Wall Street gets leveled. The Eiffel Tower is toppled. In one particularly manipulative moment, a little girl and her mother gawk at Big Ben before London gets its clock cleaned. One problem with the “Modern Warfare” series is that you cannot do anything to stop this. You control a cross section of elite warriors with seemingly inﬁnite resources at their disposal, yet a surprising percentage of “MW3” missions end in failure. Makarov got away again? Oops. What do you control? Guns. Pistols,

shotguns, sniper rifles, assault weapons, rocket launchers — if it has a trigger, it’s here. Occasionally you get to call in an airstrike or set off explosives, but for the most part it’s aim and shoot, aim and shoot until you’ve killed everyone. The gameplay falls into the familiar pattern for military shooters: You enter an area filled with enemies, eliminate them, then reload and move on to the next zone. There are occasional breaks — like an underwater mission tracking a nuclear sub — but they’re just brief diversions from the relentless gunplay. It all looks and sounds spectacular; developers Infinity Ward and Sledgehammer Games had a lot to live up to with this sequel, but all the behindthe-scenes drama doesn’t seem to have diminished the quality of the production. (In brief: Infinity Ward’s founders and dozens of their employees jumped ship last year, and Sledgehammer was recruited to help the restaffed studio complete the “MW” trilogy.) As always, “MW3” offers an exhaustive suite of online, multiplayer modes. There’s nothing radically new this year, but familiar modes like death match and capture-the-flag have been tweaked enough that online “CoD” fans will definitely want to update. Also returning is the Special Ops mode, a collection of brief solo or two-player missions that fill in some of the main campaign’s background. And there’s the new addition of “Call of Duty Elite,” a $50 add-on service that promises monthly downloadable content, prize competitions and other treats for the truly hardcore. The big question for this franchise is: Where does it go from here? Creatively, the entire military shooter genre has shown some signs of exhaustion this year. Sales-wise, however, “Call of Duty” is still doing blockbuster numbers, and Activision has already announced a new “CoD” installment for 2012. Next time, I hope the developers take a few more chances and try to breathe some new life into a series that’s at risk of getting stale. The Associated Press

klahoma is in the middle of a beer revolution. In the past few years, several craft breweries have emerged, with their beers dotting liquor store shelves. Pubs and bars have expanded their beer offerings into the hundreds and offer numerous special pint nights and cask beer events. The end result: Beer has emerged as a hot beverage choice in Oklahoma. Mirroring the growth of the state’s beer craze has been the TapWerks Beer Championship Series. Now in its fourth year, the Beer Championship Series gives Oklahoma’s beer fans a chance to name their favorite brew. Sixty-four beers have been selected to compete in a bracket-style tournament, with winners selected by popular vote at The Thirsty Beagle beer blog. The champion will receive the coveted Golden Taphandle Trophy and claim the title of Oklahoma’s favorite beer.

he Meat House, 2249 W Danforth Road, is a throwback to the original Kamp’s Grocery Store, offering premium meats, produce and baked goods. Bill Kamp’s Meat Market is still alive and well and living in Nichols Hills, but the new Meat House is taking things to the next level while working hard to support local producers. “All the beef we sell is local,” said director of operations James Kraham, who graduated from Putnam City West High School before following a football career through West Texas A&M, Oklahoma State and finally the University of Nevada in Las Vegas where he majored in Hotel and Restaurant Management. “We’re committed to being a part of the community.” That means local produce, beef from various Oklahoma cattle ranches, pork and chicken from local farms and bread from Prairie Thunder Baking Co. Not everything is local, or you wouldn’t have a chance to get fish from one of Oklahoma City’s premier fishmongers, DeLancey Miller, whose commitment to sustainable fishing practices is the thing of legend among local chefs and gourmands. Steaks can be cut to order and come in a variety of grades and ages. You also will find lesser-known cuts such as tri-tip and hangars regularly. The store also offers high-end brands and exotic meats including $18-per-pound bacon from Nueske’s, pheasant, rattlesnake and duck. If it can be legally butchered, the Meat House has it plus all the things you need to make a complete meal. But if you don’t feel like cooking, the Meat House offers plenty of takeaway meals and foods prepared in its kitchen. You’ll also find Boar’s Head deli items and artisanal cheeses. The first store in Edmond also won’t be the last. Kraham says they are looking in the Moore area and have considered Yukon, too. “We want to have a presence all around Oklahoma City,” Kraham said. The Meat House is open seven days a week.

Whether you’re skiing at Breckenridge or snowboarding at Keystone in Colorado, roaring down a mountain coaster at Okemo or zip-lining through the snowy trees at Smuggler’s Notch in Vermont, or just lounging in the warm, toasty lodge of your destination of choice, here are the basics of dressing for the occasion. “The key to ski wear, snowboarding or any activity in cold weather is your base layer,” said Linda Robinson, apparel and hardgoods manager at Sun & Ski Sports 10109 N May. “No cotton. You never want cotton anywhere near your body.” The reason your base layer should be made of a synthetic blend rather than cotton, she said, is that base layers intended for extreme weather wick away moisture and perspiration and use the moisture to lock in body heat. Cotton just gets damper and colder. Some of these high-tech polyesters are hollow core, “like a polar bear’s fur. That’s how they stay warm and dry,” Robinson said.

T H E O T H E R L AY E R S Of course a good base layer only goes so far. Since you loose body heat faster through your head than anywhere else on your body, choosing the right helmet and under-helmet hats will help trap your body heat. Most good ski helmets are enough to keep your head warm, said Tim Thomas, floor supervisor at Sun & Ski Sports, but some people like the added warmth of a “helmet beanie.” Common base layer and helmet beanie fabrics are silk, brushed Poly Pro and other polyester blends and fleece. For your hands, you’ll need some good glove liners. Gloves tend to get extremely wet and are hard to dry overnight, Thomas said. Glove liners made from good base layer materials will wick moisture from your hands, keeping your hands safe from frostbite. Once you have all the technical base layers figured out, it’s time for the fun, fashionable and functional outerwear. There is ski wear, and then there is snowboard wear. Robinson said the main differences between the two are the fit, styles, prints and colors. “It’s the fit and the look. The snowboard wear is going to be a little baggier, a little lower slung. It’s like what you see the skate kids wearing. A lot of people like that fit,” she said. Snowboard outerwear is usually more edgy, brighter and comes in more interesting prints. FUN EXTRAS When shopping for your ski trip, there are a few cool gadgets you might want to make sure you have. Some helmets come with Bluetooth and speakers inside, so you can talk on the phone or listen to your music wirelessly. You can even ﬁnd helmets with sunroofs to open while you’re spring skiing, when you might need a cool-off. You can buy a camera to catch all the action and mount it to your helmet, snowboard, skis or wherever you want. Some are waterproof so you can even take them wakeboarding. Some of the brands Sun & Ski carries include Midland, Go Pro and Contour. “A lot of people like taking their walkie-talkies. That way if they get separated, they can use them and say, ‘Hey, I’m at the coffee hut,’ or whatever.” Thomas said. The downside to walkie-talkies is that so many people use them, the frequencies are often full of other people’s noise. For moderate snow enthusiasts, a trip to the lodge or coffee hut is all the hydration necessary, Thomas said. But for hard-core outdoors men, women and children, the CamelBak is known as a survivalist’s hydration pack. So load your MP3 player with ski tunes, charge up your action cam, get your high-tech undergear going on, suit up, stay warm and hit the slopes in style.
