his is the last time I will tell this story — at least until I’m the oldest man in the retirement village and I’m telling it to the nurses every time they come to change my linens. In 1989, I was listening to Live 105 in San Francisco, which was arguably the best station in California back in the late-1980s because, unlike KROQ in Los Angeles, program director Steve Masters thought better of playing The Cult’s “Love Removal Machine” every single hour. Masters was the evening DJ at the station, and he staged a trivia contest every night in which he offered concert tickets to callers who could answer Masters’ notoriously difficult musicoriented questions. Prior to that night, my only victory in a radio trivia contest was as a teenager, when a Tulsa radio station asked which band was once known as the High Numbers. I knew it was The Who, and for my trouble, I was given a radio promo copy of Don Henley’s “Building the Perfect Beast,” which is kind of like getting a lifetime supply of Vienna sausages for winning “Iron Chef.” But the stakes for Masters’ trivia were considerably higher: tickets to see Pixies at San Jose State University. Masters’ question was strictly for freaks: which punk band recorded an album called “Give Daddy the Knife, Cindy” under the name Naz Nomad and the Nightmares? It was, of course, The Damned, and thanks to some fleet dialing and a brain crowded with minutiae, I won. Fortunately and appropriately, Bob Mould was opening for Pixies. The former leader of Husker Du, Mould had just released his solo debut, “Workbook,” a mostly introspective and entirely acoustic album. But in retrospect, I believe Mould knew that his “Workbook” material, which
sounded like campfire songs compared to “New Day Rising” or “Makes No Sense At All,” would not go over with an audience primed for “Gouge Away” and “Bone Machine.” So Mould played material from his next album, “Black Sheets of Rain.” And yes, the songs were as loud as that title makes them sound. Mould was unrelenting, pushing the decibel level as hard as he could until my ears felt like they’d been ice-picked. The pain was so intense that I was forced to leave before the Pixies set. The next morning, I went to the doctor, and the nurse wrote something in my record along the lines of, “Subj was at punk rock concert, sound is muffled, constant ringing.” About 70 percent of my hearing returned but the tinnitus persists to this day, and whenever the subject of either Pixies or my faltering hearing came up, I would dive into a Bob Mould rant. When Nathan Poppe texted me last week about his total immersion in all things Mould/Husker Du/ Sugar, it nearly triggered another one. The 1993 Pixies breakup added insult to injury, but then their reunion 11 years later gave me hope. Last year, my wife, Laura, took me to see the band at the Brady in Tulsa, and it was like a beautiful healing ceremony. It helped that it was the band’s “Doolittle” tour, in which they played that 1989 album in its entirety — the album they were supporting when Bob Mould broke my ears. Now, Pixies are swinging back around and picking up an Oklahoma City date on Nov. 15 at the Coca-Cola Bricktown Events Center (see page 21). The opening act is Imaginary Cities. Their debut album, “Temporary Resident,” is poppy, melodic and eminently listenable. Then again, they might sound like Mastodon by the time they get here. Bring the plugs. LOOKATOKC.COM

M
y legs looked like something Black Friday shoppers trampled across in order to snag buy one, get one free Blu-ray players. The cause of my black and blue shins was Justin Champlin, an Oakland-based rocker who fronts the band Nobunny. The punk quartet made a stop in Oklahoma City on Nov. 4, and I’ll never be quite the same. Describing Nobunny’s music to someone for the first time is like reading Shakespeare to a Juggalo: It’s going to take time for things to sink in. Champlin wears a bunny mask, underwear and little else besides a microphone while belting out songs resembling a mixture of The Ramones and Chuck Berry. Newly established record label Okie Dope Records is responsible for inviting Nobunny to a packed Conservatory two years in a row. I’m still trying to figure out why I’m so entranced by Nobunny, but the rowdy crowd was a few steps ahead of me. While I found cover on the top of a stack of amplifiers, patrons danced wildly and landed more beer on the ceiling than in their stomachs. Although my bruises are going to stick with me well into Thanksgiving, I applaud the efforts of Okie Dope. Hype and mystery are key elements to a great show. When you don’t know what’s going to happen at a concert then it’s a lot easier to build unanticipated levels of excitement. I’m already looking forward to rabbit season next year. Out of control Oklahoma shows aren’t in short supply. Broncho, The Boom Bang, Colourmusic and many others have filled that role expertly. However, I have to settle down eventually. Lucky for me, Norman-based dark rockers Depth & Current’s sent me its self-titled debut. The booming and spooky nature of the 10 songs was enough to paralyze the frantic pace of my fall season. The standout track “Lost” is a slow burning rock opus with a sweeping soundscape so big that it could use a mountain as a footstool. I also found calming refuge in electronic Okie artist Colin Nance’s album “Summer Fever.” The June release is a fresh and relaxing return to the warm glow of summer. The track “Come Alive” is the equivalent of stepping into a snowstorm and wrapping yourself in a dozen warm blankets. Whether you’re pushing and shoving or napping and relaxing, there’s a local song being made to satisfy any direction your mood swings.

The ‘Girlie Show’ is all about girl power
W
hat’s pink with a curve and lasts for two days? If you answered with “The Girlie Show,” you’re probably a regular attendee, and now I am a committed fan. I just encountered my first Girlie Show event. It’s kind of a disgrace that I haven’t been in the years it’s been around, but nonetheless it’s better late than never. This is the only arts event in OKC that I know of that is geared specifically toward women. All of the artists are women. The music is performed by women including Marcy Priest, Vivia Parks, Ruskettes, and Jane Mays. Even the food is somewhat geared towards women. By that, I mean cupcakes are everywhere. When cupcakes are involved, this girl is happy. The Girlie Show was started in 2004 by three artistic women wanting a place to showcase their art. What transpired was an annual party with 40 artists from Texas, Kansas, Illinois, Arkansas and of course, Oklahoma. In 2006 it became a two-day event. The Friday night show is a huge party with food, music, a massive crowd and some edgy art, all created by women. The Web site describes the massive occasion. “The Girlie Show is art, creativity, craftsmanship and funk. Hand-designed … sometimes refined … and all by chicks. It’s not stuffy like an art show or fluffy like a craft show. Think less haute, more hot.” That describes where their motto “Art with a Curve” comes from. Every year brings something new. This year they added belly dancers and an award for best booth presentation. There are booths featuring anything from Oklahoma-themed onesies to jewelry recycled out of guitar strings and pillow covers. I got out with an owl-shaped pillow by Bumblefluff, based out of Edmond. It’s the cutest thing ever and it’s all handmade. One artist told me she prepares for The Girlie show months prior to the event. A lot of art events get a lot of traffic, but not a lot sold. Everyone that I talked to at The Girlie Show had a bag of goodies they had just bought. I think it’s because it features handmade items that you can’t find at most stores if any stores at all, and it’s not insanely expensive like a lot of arts fests. Overall I had a superb experience. It’s a social event that both males or females gravitate to each year to celebrate the talented women the region has to offer. I haven’t enjoyed this much girl power since I was obsessed with the Spice Girls in 1997. Kudos to Dawn, Erin and Marilyn for a great show.

‘MYLO XYLOTO’ – COLDPLAY
ylo Xyloto” represents the moment when Coldplay stopped aspiring to be the next U2 and climbed into Jay-Z and Kanye West’s tricked-out Maybach. No, “Mylo Xyloto” is not a hip-hop album in the strictest sense, nor has Chris Martin traded in his aching voice for “luxury rap,” but it radiates the high-dollar gloss of the genre’s royal family and can be played next to “Watch the Throne” without inflicting much stylistic dissonance. And by leaps and bounds, “Mylo Xyloto” is Coldplay’s most carefree collection of songs — consider the weight of the world officially dropped. Producer Brian Eno scales back the strings and portent that suffused 2008’s “Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends,” a move clearly in play when

“Hurts Like Heaven” breezes forward on a crisp bed of synths as the bell tones of Jon Buckland’s guitar ring out. It’s anybody’s guess what “You use your heart as a weapon/ and it hurts like heaven” means, other than a somewhat more eloquent variation on “hurts so good,” and the dreams of “Paradise” on the first single might not amount to much, but the melodies float like clouds. “Paradise” is de rigueur Coldplay, but Eno’s slick musical chassis is the stuff of modern pop — the stuttering repetition of the title in “Paradise” recalls Rihanna, who shows up to duet with Martin on the lushly synthetic “Princess of China.” This champagne-room aesthetic does not completely devour the Coldplay of old: Martin is back in a comfort position for the piano ballad “Up in Flames,” and “Major Minus” lets Buckland and drummer Will Champion churn up a beautiful,

stadium-friendly noise as Eno’s soundmanipulations peel in the background. Eno’s sonic touches enlarge the sound in all the right places on “Mylo Xyloto” and usher Coldplay into a style that is actually more revolutionary for the band than “Viva La Vida” was, principally because the band now sounds jet-packed for future travel. Some longtime fans
might mourn the loss of the more organic Coldplay atmospherics of a decade ago, but at a point in Martin’s career when he could issue simulacra of “A Rush of Blood to the Head” in perpetuity and make bank, the ambition of “Mylo Xyloto” feels right. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘FOUR THE RECORD’ – MIRANDA LAMBERT
klahoma singer-songwriter Miranda Lambert blasted into a whole new orbit two years ago with her third album, “Revolution.” With her follow-up effort, “Four the Record,” the Tishomingo resident proves she’s not content to just spin in place now that she has ascended to country music superstardom. She is seeking out new musical territories, and her bold explorations propel her to an even higher creative zenith. The Texas native’s “Revolution” reached the No. 3 spot on my top 10 albums list for 2009; it will take the arrival of a monumental out-of-nowhere musical achievement to keep her from seizing No. 1 this year. Lambert, who turns 28 on Nov. 10, has matured and improved as an artist from “Revolution” to “Four the Record.” The new album opens with “All Kinds
of Kinds,” a waltzing country-folk tribute to circus performers, a cross-dressing politician and a pill-popping pharmacist that sounds unlike anything on her previous three albums. She ups the creative ante even further with “Fine Tune,” a sensual blues-rock groove revving with sexy wonky vocals, distorted guitars and sly turns of phrase. For 14 straight tracks, she doesn’t drop one single dud, shifting sonic stylings and emotional states with casual confidence. Lambert lives up to her firebrand reputation with the boot-stomping breakup meltdown “Mama’s Broken Heart” and cheerily dares a guy to keep up with her wild-child carousing on “Fastest Girl in Town.” She says a final old-fashioned country goodbye to a nogood guy in “Same Old You” and feels the sting of watching her former lover take a new girl out on the dance floor
with “Nobody’s Fool.” Fans have long clamored for a power ballad duet from Lambert and her husband, Blake Shelton, and they deliver the goods with “Better in the Long Run.” The couple penned the heartbreaker “Over You” about the death of Shelton’s brother in a car accident, and Lambert poured all her newlywed ardor into

similarly mellow treatment from Civil Twilight, with a melancholy minor-cord piano line as its centerpiece, colored around the smoothed edges by atmospheric electric guitar fills and spacey orchestral drones and swells. Pretty, but sorely lacking the raw emotional power of the original. But Story of the Year’s hard-driving, wall-ofdistortion run at “Breed” will likely find favor with the faithful, as will Hawthorne Heights’ gargantuan-guitar swing at “Lithium,” although the production is rather slick by Butch Vig standards. ‘Rum Diary’ could use an extra shot of adventure
W
hen the hermaphroditic garbage-truck driver who moonlights as an oracle of the dead makes her (or would that be his?) first appearance at the 1-hour, 50-minute mark, it’s a sure sign a movie has significant pacing problems. That’s the case with “The Rum Diary,” Johnny Depp’s long-delayed second cinematic outing into the antiauthority, drug-addled writings of late Gonzo journalist and novelist Hunter S. Thompson. While Depp, who starred as Thompson’s alter-ego inTerry Gilliam’s 1998 adaptation “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” brings his considerable off-kilter charm to the lead role, “The Rum Diary” desperately needs a hefty dose of Gilliam’s visual ingenuity and gutsy storytelling. Writer-director Bruce Robinson (“The Killing Fields”) takes a fairly standard narrative approach to Thompson’s stream-of-altered-consciousness style, and the result is a film that rambles as badly as a drunkard’s journal. The story is packed with eccentric journalists, cockfights, rum, politics, ugly Americans, more rum, mob riots, pristine beaches, even more powerful rum, the aforementioned oracle and a bejeweled tortoise named Harry.
With all the sound, fury and drug-induced antics, it’s not surprising that “The Rum Diary” seems endlessly long and maddeningly unfocused. But considering the source and the chaos, the movie is shockingly and strangely perfunctory. Set in 1960, “The Rum Diary” stars Depp as young journalist Paul Kemp, who moves from New York to San Juan, Puerto Rico, to take a job at a failing Englishlanguage newspaper. Kemp, a Thompson alter-ego Depp seems too old to play, longs to become a novelist but is struggling to find his creative voice. However, his true passion seems to be consuming massive quantities of liquor, and he quickly divests the minibar at his hotel of 161 miniatures, to the consternation of his desperate editor E.J. Lotterman (Richard Jenkins). Kemp fits in well at the San Juan Star, which is less a journalistic enterprise than a sort of safe haven for odd, drunken American expatriates. Kicked out of the hotel, he moves into the ramshackle apartment of affable staff photographer Bob Salas (Michael Rispoli, a familiar character actor who makes the most of his largerthan-usual role), who would rather train and bet on fighting roosters than take pictures. Their apartment is also occasionally the home of semi-fired, decidedly brain-damaged crime writer Moberg (an over-the-
top Giovanni Ribisi), a Nazi sympathizer who deals in exotic drugs and brews extra-powerful rum from filters stolen from the local Bacardifactory. Although Kemp feels a greater kinship to the downtrodden locals than he does to most of the American expats and tourists, he still manages to fall in with Hal Sanderson(Aaron Eckhart), a slick and greedy businessman who gives the aspiring novelist a side job penning propaganda promoting his latest real estate scheme. Kemp’s misgivings about his new employer’s plot to spoil the island’s natural beauty in the name of profit and progress are no match for the attraction the writer feels for the Sanderson’s soon-to-be trophy wife, Chenault (Amber Heard), a stunning wild child from a high-classConnecticut family. As the story winds from its love triangle and drug hallucinations to Carnival debauchery and U.S. politics, Robinson’s film occasionally captures the imagination and elevates the pulse, particularly during the car chase sequences (yes, the movie has more than one). But “The Rum Diary” ultimately feels less like a gonzo period adventure and more like a dutifully completed laundry list of Thompson idiosyncrasies.

‘Harold & Kumar’ decks halls with 3-D egg fights
A
fter James Cameron revolutionized the 3-D process with “Avatar,” every major studio dumped a big, self-serious, three-dimensional popcorn epic into theaters, determined that every bit of action needed to be flung into the stadium seating. “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” is the long-awaited rejoinder to all those bloated event movies: An enthusiastically stupid comedy that makes the most of its technology in the service of a barrage of inventive sight gags. Those who take “enthusiastically stupid” as cutting criticism miss the point, because in the third installment of the “Harold & Kumar” series, the only stupidity worth having is the enthusiastic kind. The good news is that the slack tedium of 2008’s “Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay” is gone, replaced by a barrage of bad behavior and the constant prospect of a character flinging an egg or a beer pong ball into the theater or exhaling a ribbon of slightly green smoke into the faces in the audience. The bad news is that the film suffers from an uneven distribution of the good stuff, whereas 2004’s “Harold & Kumar Go to White Castle” still reigns as one of the best comedies in the stoner subgenre.

“Christmas” takes place six years after “Guantanamo Bay,” and Harold and Kumar aren’t the inseparable heroes they once were. Harold (John Cho) is now a Wall Street banker who has to worry about getting pelted with eggs whenever he leaves his office for the suburbs (screenwriters Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg should receive an award for prescient scripting on that one). Meanwhile, Kumar (Kal Penn) has broken up with Vanessa (Danneel Harris), failed a urinalysis for a hospital position and is bonging his life away in a pizza box-filled apartment. There is no movie if the boys don’t get back together, so a fateful Christmas package must be delivered, and the result is a series of misadventures involving Christmas trees, the daughter of a notorious Russian mobster (Elias Koteas), a toddler getting a jump start on her college-age party regimen, and of course, the illustrious Neil Patrick Harris. Harris’ arrival comes during an extravaganza of Christmas-themed Broadway badness, and it gives the film an adrenaline shot just when it needs it. “White Castle” portrayed Harris as the antithesis of his true self, an over-the-top womanizer with a nose full of drugs and a mean criminal streak. The first “Harold & Kumar” comedy to be made since Harris came out as

gay, “Christmas” finds a clever way to work that reality into this “Bizarro World” depiction of the star. None of these films would work if both Harold and Kumar weren’t such nice, relatable characters: If they were maniacally grinning madmen like Stifler from the “American Pie” franchise, no one would want to spend 90 minutes with these guys. They smoke a lot of marijuana and their emotional development peaked at age 14, but it makes sense that their sidekick in “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” is Wafflebot, a toy that operates a little like a cute Roomba dispensing waffles, syrup and good tidings. Sure, the movie is often too coarse and nasty for its own good, but Harold and Kumar are all about the love. If the whole Wafflebot concept sounds stupid, don’t forget — “A Very Harold & Kumar 3D Christmas” is enthusiastically stupid: After all, Harold and Kumar hallucinate that they have become Claymated after drinking eggnog spiked with belladonna root. And it’s not a great comedy — up until Harris’ appearance, first-time director Todd Strauss-Schulson seems to be huffing and puffing to make it all work. But then it all falls into place and it’s as if Wafflebot just gave all the arrested-adolescent fans an extra helping of the maple. — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor

‘Anonymous’ not just for intellectual doubters
G
ive “Anonymous” credit for one astonishing feat: It both ascends to the peak of intellectual snobbery and then power-dives to the depths of anti-intellectualism.Director Roland Emmerich and writer John Orloff are so bent on proving that William Shakespeare did not write his plays that they enthusiastically wash almost the entirety of Elizabethan history down the loo in the process. Having destroyed the world in “Independence Day,” “The Day After Tomorrow” and “2012,” now Emmerich is burning down the Globe with Shakespeare in it. The foundation for the pseudo-history in “Anonymous” is the ultimate snob story: Shakespeare, the son of a “glovemaker” (a word that Derek Jacobi spits out like curdled buttermilk in a bookending mock-stage performance) could never have written all those plays, and the most likely true author was Edward de Vere, the 17th Earl of Oxford. The conspiracy theory is that Oxford (played in later years by Rhys Ifans), was barred by the crown from publishing his plays under his own name, and because he had an ax to grind, the royal historical dramas always featured an undercurrent of then-relevant political messaging — always good for stoking a peasant riot. Therefore, Oxford asked Ben
Jonson (Sebastian Armesto) to engineer a subterfuge and smuggled his folios to Jonson for later production. Unfortunately for both Jonson and de Vere, the drunken actor, semi-illiterate glovemaker’s son and prostitute enthusiast Shakespeare (Rafe Spall) takes credit and takes bows before Jonson can hatch a better story. Spall plays Shakespeare as barely smart enough to control his bowels, bugging out his eyes as drool forms around his stammering mouth. It’s a terrible performance designed to ram the point home with a lance: Shakespeare wasn’t just a fraud — he was the dumbest man to ever emerge fromStratford-upon-Avon. There is no way he could write “The Tempest” with such obviously bovine intelligence. Plus, he’s the one who stabbed Christopher Marlowe(Trystan Gravelle) in the eye. How do like your Bard now? Elizabeth I doesn’t fare much better. In “Anonymous” “The Virgin Queen” is a moody nymphomaniac who bedded Oxford when the young man (Jamie Campbell Bower) was married to the daughter of Elizabeth’s trusted-but-corrupt adviser, William Cecil(David Thewlis). Casting the mother-daughter team of Vanessa Redgrave and Joely Richardson to play Elizabeth was inspired but never gains traction since Emmerich’s haphazard flashbacking between de Vere’s early days and his later, sadder years makes a complicated con-
spiracy nearly impenetrable. As some guy once wrote, “An honest tale speeds best, being plainly told,” and then there is “Anonymous.” The authorship of Shakespeare’s plays barely matters — the foundation of English literature and the root point for much of our language is unchanged regardless of author. But it’s the inherent snob factor of the Oxfordian theory that makes “Anonymous” so odious. History is filled with unlikely heroes. Yes, two mediocre students from a dank shipping town wrote the greatest songs of the second half of the 20th century. So it had to be a cabal of Cambridge poets who wrote “Strawberry Fields Forever,” “Eleanor Rigby” and all the others before stabbing the “real” Paul McCartney in the eye, right? But “Anonymous” is not just for the intellectual Shakespeare doubters. With its insistence on casting doubt on almost everything in its purview, this film will appeal to that seething strain of modern anti-intellectualism believing that higher learning institutions are not to be trusted. After all, why read Shakespeare when he didn’t write those plays anyway and Queen Elizabeth was a floozy? As Shakespeare — or whomever — wrote in “Hamlet,” “Though this be madness, yet there is method in’t.”

hen director Brett Ratner (“Rush Hour”) began production for his comedy “Tower Heist” starring Eddie Murphy and Ben Stiller, he either had a crystal ball or some great luck. His film features a ragtag group of Anonymous working stiffs who decide to return the favor to the Wall Street titan who defrauded them, and it happens to be released during a great period of widespread populist outrage. “Tower Heist” is a comedic caper that channels “Oceans Eleven” but isn’t as smooth. His aim is to flee his impending prosecution for running a Ponzi scheme and stealing billions from his investors. The employees have unknowingly become victims as well because Kovacs asked Shaw to invest the pension account. satisfactory ending. In the movie’s defense, the one who hilariously pulls this motley crew together is Murphy, who plays the criminal “Slide.” We see the side of Murphy that in recent years has been overshadowed, literally, by fat suit costumes. His character’s exaggerated sense of self-worth, perhaps even thoughts of grandeur, balance out this ensemble that has no shortage of Hollywood talent. Without Slide, the individual personalities are an awkward bunch. If you yearn for the days when Eddie Murphy was synonymous with Axel Foley and Reggie Hammond, and you can get past the repeated breaking of the laws of physics for pure and simple comedic value, you’ll find “Tower Heist” an entertaining watch. — Tiffany M. he Pixies like to joke that they probably hold the record for the longest-running reunion in the history of rock. It’s been going since 2004. But they worry about the shelf life of the good old stuff they’ve relied on to please their fans these last seven years. The Boston-bred quartet hasn’t released an album of new material since 1991’s “Trompe le Monde,” and the tour celebrating the 20th anniversary of 1989’s “Doolittle” is now in its second year. “I mean, this reunion, we’ve been around longer than the first time around,” Pixies lead guitarist Joey Santiago said with a laugh in a recent phone interview from his Los Angeles home. “We can’t keep doin’ the same stuff. So we’re gonna have to, at some point or another, pony up something. Or call it quits.” Pixies fans don’t want to go through that again. In four short years and as many albums (plus one EP), singer-guitarist Black Francis (aka Frank Black, birth name Charles Thompson IV), bassist-singer Kim Deal (aka Mrs. John Murphy), drummer David Lovering and Santiago became the most influential alternative band of the late-’80s/early ’90s, melding jagged-edged fragments of punk, surf rock, power-pop and ferocious riffs into a stormy signature sound that ebbed and swelled in quiet verses and explosive choruses. Francis yelped, shrieked, shouted, whispered and occasionally crooned about everything from sex and religion to mutilation, love and death, with Deal adding touches of moody female harmony on tunes such as the Luis Bunuel tribute “Debaser,” the exhilaratingly unsettling “Gouge Away” and the uncharacteristically melodic and poppy “Here Comes Your STORY CONTINUED ON PAGE 23

Man.” But in-fighting — mainly between Francis and Deal over her desire to share more of the spotlight — finally took its toll. Francis announced the breakup in 1993 and launched his solo career under the Frank Black moniker, while Deal went off to turn her side band, the Breeders, into a fulltime project, Santiago composed music for a couple of TV and film projects and formed a band called the Martinis with his wife, Linda Mallari, and Lovering developed a magic/science act, dubbing himself a “Scientific Phenomenalist” and opening shows for Black, the Breeders and Camper Van Beethoven. “I got into magic,” the drummer said in a separate interview from his L.A. home. “I became a full-on magician, just learning everything. I needed to come up with a stage act, so it was my love of science and electronics and magic all combined. Basically I wear a lab coat and I come out and I start doing physics experiments, really neat ones. And then the line gets a little blurry because I’m doing some other weird experiments where it’s really magic but I’m trying to blur the line, just makes it seem very odd. “And that was the show,” Lovering said. “We had a blast doing it and I still do it once in a while when I’m not touring.” But mostly he’s touring, and has been since early 2004, when the Pixies agreed to a trial reunion and took their show back out on the road. “Yeah, you know, we tour, and then we take four months off, then we tour, four months off, so, whatever, you know,” Santiago said. The current “Doolittle” tour, coming Nov. 15 to the Coca-Cola Bricktown Events Center, features the Pixies playing their ’89 breakthrough album in its entirety, plus their most elaborate stage show yet. “Yeah, this is the biggest production we’ve had for any kind of a

show we’ve done, and it entailed a video screen behind us,” Lovering said. “Myles Mangino is our lighting designer. He had different video artists who would take a song from ‘Doolittle’ and do their interpretation of it video-wise. And that is what plays behind us for each song during ‘Doolittle,’ that little video vignette. And actually I don’t even know what it is ’cause I haven’t a chance to watch it with my back to it the whole time.” The concert will open with the Pixies performing B-side songs from the album’s single releases, and conclude with an encore of songs from their other albums, “Surfer Rosa,” “Bossanova” and “Trompe le Monde.” Meanwhile, on the prospects of a new studio album, both Santiago and Lovering are noncommittal. “Yeah, the constant touring and Kim and Charles, they keep doin’ their own stuff,” Santiago said. “And not only that, there hasn’t been a peaked interest yet, mutually. At one point, someone was into it, and then no one else was. We’re just trying to align the stars, as they say.” So far, Lovering said, the band hasn’t needed new material to hold their audience’s interest. “But I know we’re gonna wear out our welcome soon enough,” the drummer said. “I know we’ve been playing, I think, two casinos in the last two years, so that’s giving me a hint of what’s to be. So I think a new record would be good.” Until that finally comes to be, Santiago and Lovering are confident that peace among all Pixies will continue to be kept. “Oh, yeah, yeah, everything’s cool,” Santiago said. “The whole band was dysfunctional — as with most bands — back then,” Lovering said of the early days. “I think we’re just older and wiser now ... We’re all laid back and we’re just enjoying it.”

‘BAT TL E FI E L D 3’
‘Battlefield 3’ offers intense multiplayer action
“C
all of Duty” games have been dominating the world of console online shooters in recent years, but another series that built much of its devoted following on the PC is making a strong push for its share of that space. “Battlefield 3” ($59.99, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3 and PC) is the latest installment from Electronic Arts and Swedish developer Dice, and its expansive maps, amazing selection of vehicles and intense gunfights are sure to keep gamers logging their online hours. Sure, it’s war, but the game makes war look as gorgeous as it possibly can with beautifully designed maps that come to life with incredible detail and lighting. The Xbox 360 version comes on two discs — one for campaign mode and one for multiplayer — and suggests installation of an HD texture pack to bring out its full visuals. It’s well worth the storage space. The game has a short campaign mode, but it’s clearly secondary to the online play so I’ll touch on that later. “Battlefield 3” really shines in online multiplayer, offering rush, squad rush, squad death match, team death match and conquest modes that are engaging and fun. The intense 24-person battles are particularly fun in some of the tighter urban maps such as Grand Bazaar in Tehran. My favorite is Operation Metro in Paris, particularly when your squad finds itself under heavy fire and has to duck into some of the nooks around the map’s subway section. The key to surviving and scoring some kills in the smaller maps is moving fast

and finding cover, but the game takes on a much different feel in expansive levels such as Operation Firestorm. Sure, you can hoof it on foot all the way to the oil refinery, but why not jump into a fighter jet or attack helicopter to save the wear and tear on those new boots? The selection of vehicles in the game is astounding: tanks, armored personnel carriers, Humvees, amphibious assault vehicles, rigid-hulled inflatable boats and the aforementioned aircraft. Having a few mixed into a firefight can feel like sheer chaos at times. Games in the “Battlefield” series and its “Bad Company” counterpart have always focused on teamwork, and this installment is no exception. The class-based system gets past the typical online shooter goal of simply firing on every bad guy that comes into the cross hairs. Players can take on different roles of providing suppressing fire, handing out ammo to comrades or reviving downed squad members. It’s nice to have a bad session in which you barely get a kill, yet still get some points for helping to secure an area or weaken an enemy before a fellow squad member gets the final kill. The brief campaign mode, which should take no more than six to eight hours to complete, follows a story told by Sgt. Henry Blackburn, a Marine under suspicion of treason with information on a potential terrorist attack. It jumps right into the action, throwing Blackburn into an intense battle with members of a militant Iranian insurgency on a moving train. But then it quickly slides into a military interrogation room with him recounting the events leading up to that scene. The game also offers co-op mode, allowing a player to team up with an online partner to tackle scenes loosely based on the campaign with the goal of unlocking some additional weapons. We’ll soon see what new bells and whistles “Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3” brings to the multiplayer online shooter arena, but until then, I’ll be spending as much time as I can playing “Battlefield 3.” – From The Associated Press

oshua Valentine’s Divine Swine is an allegorical depiction of the worldwide hegemony of pork — not a barbecue joint. “I get asked what style of barbecue I make all the time,” Valentine said. That’s likely because he’s in the space formerly occupied by the star-crossed BBQ Chop Shop (May it rest in pork). But Valentine’s Divine Swine, 7801 N May Ave., is a breakfast and lunch cafe with a story to tell. Pork is the main character, food is the medium and the narrative is driven by the hands of a classically trained chef. “Everything in here is homemade, including the furnishings,” he said. Valentine, 32, won the local Taste of Elegance pork contest a few years ago, and was inspired by the many ways pork could be used. With the help of his fiance and partner, Courtney Evans — a full-time college student when she’s not toiling in the kitchen — and their immediate family, Valentine’s dream of sharing those possibilities is coming true. Using the training he learned in the Coach House apprenticeship program and in the kitchens of two Stephan Pyles’ restaurants in Dallas, Valentine is baking his own breads, curing and smoking his own bacon and ham, grinding his own sausage and burgers, and making gravy and ketchup from scratch. “Unless it walks on four legs or grows out of the ground, I make it in this kitchen,” Valentine said. “Nothing from a can or a box. experience food done right.” You’ll find cultural influences from China, Canada, France, Italy and Greece on the breakfast, lunch and brunch menus. Breakfast is a simple, hearty offering that includes the aforementioned cured meats plus farm-fresh eggs. Sandwiches are made with homemade English muffins. “I had a gentleman from Hinton tell me our bacon was the first he’d ever had in a restaurant that tastes the way bacon is supposed to,” Valentine said. “That’s the best compliment I can get.” The coup de grace is the Candied Bacon Sticky Buns, which are good enough to found a food empire. Brown sugar, butter, cream, bacon, apples and pecans go into a hot pan and out comes a thick, rich, robust syrup with hints of maple. This is poured over a homemade brioche bun and served with a dollop of homemade whipped cream. As the dish was put before me for the first time, I was surrounded by a table of chefs and gourmands. The Frenchman seated to my left, who had cautiously navigated the pork procession to maintain his diet up to that point, touched the gooey, rich topping with a fingertip and quickly tasted it. The word that sprang from the lips of my French friend cannot be printed in this family publication, but I can report he slapped a temporary injunction on the aforementioned diet and dove into dessert. For lunch, the menu is broken into appetizers, salads, sandwiches and entrees. Highlights include thee pork cracklings with white cheddar and esplette peppers. The Asian Ribs are delectable. The French salad is a simple frisee salad with vinaigrette, but add smoked pork belly and a poached egg and you have something inspired. If a burger sounds good, try Josh’s “My Burger” — don’t be afraid of red onion jam, it is your friend in flavor. You’ll be thrilled to collide with this tall, bulky delicious-berg, starting with its homemade bun and ending with the hand-cut fries and house-made ketchup. The Smoked Pork Loin blew me away. I never order this kind of dish at restaurants because it’s routinely served dry and flavorless. Josh smokes the loin ahead, then put a nice sear on it to order. The result was juicy and flavorful. The brunch menu is breakfast and lunch united with a couple additions. Exclusively on Saturday and Sunday mornings you’ll find the Seared Pork Belly with barley risotto, pickled blackberries and mushroom. The poutine started on the appetizer menu but has moved to weekends. This Canadian classic combination of French fries, pork gravy and crumbled cheese gets some fried eggs to make it feel welcome among the brunch crowd. If you go to Divine Swine, open from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday, be patient — the price of doing things right is time. Private dinners also can be booked. RED RULES
AS FALL’S HOTTEST HUE Emily Hopkins | For The Oklahoman
Renowned American designer Bill Blass famously declared, “When in doubt, wear red.” Red seems to have magical properties. The color has a distinct presence and energy, both on the wearer and on the people around her. There’s no hiding behind the color; throwing on a scarlet dress or even choosing a bright red lipstick shows everyone you have the confidence to pull off the boldest of fall hues. As Blass so aptly suggested, wearing red will always be the right choice. The color was splashed all over the fall runways this year, with nearly every major house, from Gucci to Lanvin to Diane von Furstenburg, featuring a statement look in fall’s hottest hue. Blush, at 566 Buchanan Ave., Suite E, in Norman, carries a wide variety of red pieces in numerous shades. Pieces include pants, tops, coats, dresses and a number of accessories. Owner Amanda Clark said starting with a red pant is an easy way to pull off this fall trend.

“The red skinny jeans are a great piece for fall,” she said. “You can wear them with a Tshirt or throw on a little leather jacket, so anywhere from dressy to casual, it’s going to be a statement.” If going with a bright red pant sounds a bit too adventurous, try layering a black leather jacket over a simple red chiffon dress. “You can pull it off all different ways,” Clark said. “Even a pair of red high heels or a red necklace would be a great addition to something like a little black dress.” For a simple look, try wearing a basic red dress under an open cardigan. “I would definitely stick to one piece” with red as the main color, said Stephanie Ott, owner of Savvy, 7632 Asp Ave. in Norman. “Like, if you’re wearing a really loud red top, you want to keep it simple on bottom.”
This large red leather handbag is available at Blush.
This red blazer and cream lace one-shoulder dress and gold jewel necklace are all available at Blush.
For the boldest of the bold, skip the addition of neutrals and take a note from Marchesa’s and Michael Kors’ fall lines: go straight for a red coat. Blush’s red wool peacoat easily adds a dramatic touch to a basic blue pair of jeans. “The beauty of red is that you can make it your neutral and build around it,” Ott said. “Some people tend to shy away from red and stick more to the browns and the blacks, but you can defi nitely make it your neutral. There really aren’t any colors I don’t like to see with red.”
