GEORGE L ANG

I try to make my every action for that highest good With the altruistic wish to achieve Buddhahood So I pledge here before everyone who’s listening To make my every action for the good of all beings. — MCA and Beastie Boys, “Bodhisattva Vow”

Adam Yauch helped turn Beastie Boys into men, and for Beasties fans of a certain age, he was the example. The first time most people saw MCA, he beat himself in the head with his own shoe, kicked down the door to a nerd party, grabbed a beer out of a random partier’s hand, drank it, bounced it off his head, turned around and spit the beer into the next guy’s face. That’s the starting point for one of the great evolution stores in modern music. My first copy of Beastie Boys’ “Licensed to Ill” was a counterfeit cassette that sounded like it was about six generations removed from the original master and had been run over by a jitney on its way to the bogus tape store in the Philippines where I bought it. That was my pre-Napster, Pacific Fleet way of testing the waters: it was January 1987 and “Fight for Your Right” was blowing up back home. I needed to know, and two bucks was two bucks. And I know that every centavo went to some criminal in Manila running dual decks 24 hours a day, but I made it up to the late Adam Yauch and his bandmates, Michael Diamond and Adam Horowitz, by purchasing four distinct and legitimate copies of “Licensed to Ill,” including a digital version last year. Each track was designed to horrify authority, whether it was a parent, an early hip-hop purist or some uptight Led Zeppelin fan screaming, “Apostasy!” No other album in 1987 was played more at parties, and while “Licensed to Ill” is considered a fun but slight album compared to the ones that followed and the Beasties looked like the poster boys for future 1987 nostalgia, with beer in one hand and a hot ticket to oblivion in the other. But the combination of tightly crafted smart stupidity and Rick Rubin’s go-for-broke melding of classic rock with breakbeats makes it a classic. Although my first “Licensed” was unlicensed, it became the foundation for rabid fandom — the foundation, but not the cornerstone. That status belongs to “Paul’s Boutique,” an album that was such a colossal artistic leap beyond the bash-and-sneer punk-hop of “Licensed to Ill” that it still feels like a superhuman feat. Much is said about how the Dust Brothers’ production created a kind of aural mosaic so brilliantly constructed from found sounds that the form was practically outlawed within two years, but “Paul’s Boutique” is a masterpiece largely because Yauch pushed his group to think bigger and deeper. It was like going from “Meet the Beatles” to “Abbey Road” in one move. They lost a lot of fans that they would have lost anyway, but they traded them in for loyal ones. As they moved forward, Beastie Boys reclaimed the instruments they set aside prior to “Licensed” and Yauch became a Buddhist, a vegetarian, a human rights activist and entrepreneur. He renounced the misogyny of “Licensed to Ill” on 1994’s “Sure Shot” and explored his new consciousness on “Bodhisattva Vow” and “Namaste.” And through it all, Beasties never stopped making great albums, all the way through to last year’s “Hot Sauce Committee, Part 2.” Not many groups achieve such a constancy of excellence. Yauch became a music video director par excellence under the name Nathaniel Hornblower and started Oscilloscope Laboratories, the independent film distribution company that released “We Need to Talk About Kevin,” “The Messenger,” “Meek’s Cutoff,” “Exit Through the Gift Shop” and scores of other great small-budget films. He was a multidimensional talent, a man who couldn’t and wouldn’t and didn’t stop until the end. And that’s why dads all over the world were in such a bad mood on May 4, kids. Yauch did it all right and yet the cancer he struggled with for three years was too much for even a good man with a truckload of talent, instincts and money. I never got to talk to Yauch, but he set the example for so many of us. He showed us how to grow up but not grow boring. His death didn’t only affect those of us who were there at the start: a good friend of mine who was probably conceived around the time “Paul’s Boutique” began its initially underwhelming run on the charts was just as broken up about losing MCA. We all process differently. My baby boomer friends lost John Lennon in a different way than I did: they mourned his death based on everything he created and said during their lives, and it was horrible for them. I discovered Lennon’s art after he was killed, and then mourned him every time I bought a new Beatles album for the next three years. It will be the same for the kids my son’s age when they discover Beastie Boys. If they work their way through the seven canonical albums, they will get to the end of “Hot Sauce Committee” and hate the fact that there are no more. But they will know from listening, beginning to end and front to back, that MCA had the skills to pay the bills. Make some noise if you’re with me.

Some things just go together

S

eparation is a tricky process. Peanut butter sticks with jelly, and Zooey Deschanel preys on quirkiness like a lion chasing a zebra. Some things just go hand in hand. I know there’s a good chance I’ll live forever in an Oklahoma known for college football and tornados. You can’t help but think of one without the other. Rising Okie folkie John Fullbright makes me think about duality. I haven’t had a conversation concerning Fullbright, 24, without hearing the inevitable mention of two things: he’s an impressive folk talent and the next Woody Guthrie. As far as I can tell, Fullbright shares a few similarities with Guthrie. His car’s floorboard is littered with harmonicas. He’s quick with a joke or a wisecrack. He even owns a house in Okemah, Guthrie’s hometown. His new album cover looks like the kind of thing you’d find in a stack of vinyl in a dusty attic. On paper, he’s one step away from opening his sets with “This Land.” After spending time with Fullbright before his two sold-out shows at The Blue Door in early May and listening to the 12 tracks on his debut album “From the Ground Up,” I’ve decided Fullbright has more going for him than being the second coming of folk’s greatest icon. Fullbright is his own musician, and the opening track “Gawd Above” makes a strong argument. The blues-drenched track was written from the point of view of God as the Almighty One dishes a tongue-in-cheek review of humanity. Fullbright successfully separates himself from the song and lets the unique point-of-view control the track’s narrative. With its spare instrumentation and its earnest storytelling, “From the Ground Up” has a way of keeping one foot in the past while the other kicks up enthusiasm for Fullbright’s potential.

‘BOOTLEG VOL. IV: THE SOUL OF TRUTH’ – JOHNNY CASH

ans of old-time country-gospel will find treasure for their hearts as well as their ears with the latest in the “Johnny Cash Bootleg Series,” “Vol. IV: The Soul of Truth.” As the old cliche goes, Cash’s distinctive bass-baritone voice would compel even if he were reciting from the phone book, but the country legend, who would have turned 80 on Feb. 26, pours soulful zeal into the 51 hymns and sacred songs on the two-disc set. The recordings were made in the 1970s and ‘80s, and as his son John Carter Cash writes eloquently in the liner notes, it was a happy time for Cash, when “his excitement for his faith is evident in his tone and timbre.” Several family and friends perform uplifting collaborations with the Arkansas-born and bred superstar, including his wife June Carter Cash, her sisters

Helen and Anita Carter, his daughters Cindy and Roseanne Cash, Roseanne’s then-husband Rodney Crowell, plus Jan Howard, Marshall Grant and Jack Routh. As usual, Cash does some of his best work with his songbird spouse as they pair for “This Train Is Bound for Glory,” “I’ll Have a New Life” and “Far Side Banks of Jordan,” and he and Jessi Colter team for a beautifully resonant rendition of the gospel chestnut “The Old Rugged Cross.” Much of the first disc is dedicated to the 20 tracks originally recorded for Cash’s rare 1979 album “A Believer Sings the Truth”; it also includes four tracks from the 1984 release “I Believe ...” Disc One closes with the spoken word piano spiritual “Truth,” a previously unreleased number that according to the liner notes is based on a poem initially believed to be written and given to Cash by Muhammad Ali. As it turns out, the poem apparently was penned

instead by Sufi leader Hazrat Inayat Khan; the set’s title “The Soul of Truth” is taken from a line in the song. More than half of the 26 tracks on Disc Two also are bowing for the first time, starting with 12 tracks that were cut in 1975 for an untitled LP that was never released. The remaining 14 were recorded in 1982 for Priority Records, according to the liner notes, but CBS closed the label before the album, “Johnny Cash — Gospel Singer,” could be dropped. In 1986, 10 of the tracks were released on World Records with the title “Believe in Him,” while the other four are debuting on the new set. Whether he is crooning one of his well-known spiritual originals like “Belshazzar” or “What on Earth Will You Do (For Heaven’s Sake)” or great old hymns like “Oh Come,Angel Band” or “Never Grow Old,” Cash’s legacy as a gospel singer is reaffirmed with his latest “Bootleg.” — Brandy McDonnell, Entertainment Writer

‘LITTLE BROKEN HEARTS’ – NORAH JONES

A

fter the massive commercial splash of 2002’s “Come Away With Me,” Norah Jones ran away from the torch songs and standards of that album, an unusual and artistically admirable move in an industry that values predictability. She collaborated with Outkast, Dolly Parton, Q-Tip, Jack White, Belle & Sebastian and Andy Samberg, performed in the all-star “Kidney Now!” benefit on “30 Rock” and generally defied all expectations. At this point, it is hard to name another current performer who has followed her muse so assiduously when many of her fans wanted to just come away with Jones again and again on similar-sounding jazz-piano albums. “Little Broken Hearts” continues Jones’ trajectory into artful indie pop that began with 2009’s “The Fall,” and <<<

despite a few moments when producer Danger Mouse covers the proceedings in too many layers of his trademarked murk, it is a satisfyingly adventurous exploration of lost love. Jones is thematically consistent on the album, whether exploring her facility with up-tempo R&B on “Say Goodbye,” delivering a lament on the other woman in “She’s 22,” or trying to make a clean break with the bouncy pop of “Happy Pills.” While Jones still possesses that great seductive jazziness in her vocal delivery, the sonic presentation on “Little Broken Hearts” is clearly designed to create distance from her early work. Even on traditional ballads such as “Miriam,” Jones and Danger Mouse shroud the tracks in dense, near-psychedelic orchestration. This approach can veer toward oppressive on some of the slower songs such as the closing “All a Dream,” when the compressed production creates dis-

tance in a track that would benefit from greater intimacy. But like the B-movie glamour of its cover art, which is modeled after the poster for the 1965 Russ Meyer film “Mudhoney,” “Little Broken

Hearts” has an element of horror to it. The end of romance is not pretty, and Jones clearly wanted to make a stark, cold-sounding album to mirror her — George Lang, LookatOKC Editor mood.

‘FEAR FUN’ – FATHER JOHN MISTY

ear Fun” is former Fleet Foxes drummer Josh Tillman’s declaration of independence after being obscured behind that group’s Graham Nash-sound-alike frontman Robin Pecknold for the last four years. It’s true that the Seattlebased, alt-folk Foxes had one of the best albums of 2011 with “Helplessness Blues” on the Sub Pop label, but Tillman had little to do with that beyond his excellent percussion work. Reinventing himself as the right trippy “Father John Misty,” and still recording on the leftward-thinking, potential-underground-star nurturing Sub Pop imprint, Tillman has released a solo effort of electrifying beauty and rocking originality written by his righteously inventive self. If his press notes can be believed,

he moved from Seattle to a spiderinfested tree house in Laurel Canyon with an ample supply of hallucinogenic mushrooms and came up with the dozen melodic dreamworks found on “Fear Fun.” The opening “Funtimes in Babylon” introduces his new persona in a supernal fashion; a slow, breezy ballad that incorporates a small orchestra of acoustic guitars, mandolin, piano, upright bass, strings and Leslie Stevens providing the multitracked female choir behind Tillman’s vocals, which bear a strong resemblance to the operatic stylings of Roy Orbison. John Bonham-heavy drumming on the mid-tempo, melodic dirge “Hollywood Forever Cemetery Sings” is a haunting three minutes of psych-pop reflection on death, while “I’m Writing a Novel” is a piano-rolling rocker reminiscent of John Lennon’s “Ballad

of John and Yoko,” with smoother edges and lyrics that seem to recount a creative crisis triggering a very bad Hollywood fever dream. The epic wall-of-sound folk-rock of “Only Son of the Ladiesman,” the orchestral “Sgt. Pepper’s”-like weirdness of “This is Sally Hatchet” and the hilarious and self-stinging commentary of “Now I’m Learning to Love the War” (“Try not to think so much

about / The truly staggering amount / Of oil / That it takes to make a record”) makes you love him all the more. This crazily elegant mix of eccentric folk, country, mid-period Beatles and Led Zeppelin influences and Tillman’s own odd muse make this one of the first really refreshing musical surprises of 2012.

Offbeat romance sparkles in ‘Five-Year Engagement’

A

s a creative team of actor-writer Jason Segel and director-writer Nick Stoller have made their romantic comedy reputations by gently tweaking the standard boy-meets-girl conventions of the well-worn genre and tilting them slightly askew. They did that quite winningly in “Forgetting Sarah Marshall” and they do it again in the offbeat and warmly funny, though slightly scattered, “Five-Year Engagement,” which pairs the dauntless romantic Segel with the stunning Emily Blunt and gives the British actress a chance to show off some surprisingly strong comic chops. With Stoller taking his sweet time (perhaps too much so) rolling out the story of nuptial interruptus, the movie piles on lots of oddball diversions and quirky supporting players to extend what’s essentially a pretty simple story. It goes like this: Segel’s Tom is an up-and-coming San Francisco chef who has finally summoned up the nerve to propose to his lovely girlfriend Violet (Blunt). But before their wedding, Violet, a smart psychology

grad student, is offered a prestigious position at the University of Michigan. Noble Tom agrees to forego his culinary career and follow Violet to the rustic North Country. There, she ends up spending too much time at work, under the fervent gaze of a too-interested supervisor (funny Rhys Ifans), and Tom falls into an increasingly sour funk as their wedding plans get put off time and again. It should be noted that the producer here is Judd Apatow, who is practically a brand name for this sort of R-rated relationship fare. (In fact, ad copy for this film boasts of its ties to the “Bridesmaids” producer, but that’s mostly a bait and switch ploy.) “Five-Year Engagement” contains the usual Apatow touches — lots of sexual frankness and streaming vulgarity, plenty of misunderstanding and miscommunication between men and women, hapless men struggling with issues of ego and maturity. But on its meandering course to “I do,” it contains some decidedly dark and emotional touches. As Violet is preoccupied with her research (something to do with stale doughnuts, believe it or not),

Tom devolves rather ludicrously from a gifted chef into a bearded backwoods yokel with a passion for hunting, smoking venison and brewing mead. The roster of supporting players, mostly TV mainstays, provides some engaging but largely tangential diversions. The standouts include Mindy Kaling (“The Office”) and Kevin Hart as Violet’s chatty U of M colleagues; Alison Brie (“Community”) as Violet’s sister and Chris Pratt (“Parks and Recreation”) as Tom’s randy, idiot pal; Brian Posehn as Tom’s deranged coworker at a hippie sandwich shop, and Chris Parnell (“Saturday Night Live”) as the sweater-knitting “faculty spouse” who gives Tom a chilling look at what his future might hold. Stoller does an admirable job of juggling this big cast of extras and dodging in and out of various subplots. But with Segel and Blunt holding center stage and sparking up loads of endearing romantic chemistry, “Five-Year Engagement” largely keeps its eye on the prized couple and keeps us cheering on its long and winding way to the altar. — Dennis King, Staff Writer

Featherheaded ‘Raven’ does Poe no justice

W

hat would Edgar Allan Poe be doing if he were alive today? Clawing at the inside of his coffin, desperate to get at the people who used and abused his ingenious, diabolical tales as the basis for the pile of cinematic bird poo that is “The Raven.” Like carrion feeders themselves, the filmmakers peck and gnash at Poe’s stories to fill out a plot that sounds sort of cool in concept — a serial killer using the author’s fiction as a blueprint for ghastly murders — but is featherheaded in execution. John Cusack makes a terrible Poe, the somber role as one of literature’s great tortured souls spotlighting his limitations as an actor. With his little goatee and his black cape, Cusack vaguely looks the part, but he’s a lightweight — voice too whiny, mannerisms too exaggerated, cadence too reedy to bring alive the movie’s

frequent passages of Poe’s lyrical writing. Other than some stylishly gothic visuals crafted by director James McTeigue (“V for Vendetta”), “The Raven” is an unimaginative mess whose superficial appropriations of Poe’s devilish yarns are deeply unworthy of the author. An introductory sequence establishes Cusack’s Poe as a garden-variety drunk, scruffy, squabbling, egomaniacal and perpetually penniless. Yet his popular stories of the macabre and his darkly romantic poetry keep him in favor with the ladies of Baltimore society. Particularly, with beautiful heiress Emily Hamilton (Alice Eve), whom Poe hopes to marry, over the dead body of her disapproving dad (Brendan Gleeson). Screenwriters Hannah Shakespeare and Ben Livingston then pull a “Saw” on Poe, taking that modern torture-porn franchise’s idea of savage gamesmanship by a serial killer and imposing it on poor Edgar. Baltimore police detective Emmett Fields (Luke Ev-

ans) enlists Poe to consult on a double homicide after recognizing it as a copycat of the author’s “The Murders in the Rue Morgue.” Soon, they’re faced with a pile of corpses dispatched in methods borrowed from “The Pit and the Pendulum,” “The Cask of Amontillado” and other Poe stories, the taunting killer forcing the author to play along to end the slaying spree. “The Raven” reinforces how fiendishly clever Poe was. The premises of his stories still resonate as a source of our modern collective nightmares — and as an endless source for Hollywood to plagiarize in contemporary horror tales. However, rather than taking Poe’s ideas and running wild, the filmmakers wring nothing more than a few moments of gore from them. They add no suspense or scares to Poe’s images, apply no originality to his plot devices. This is just a bore; quoth the raven, “Go see some— David Germain, AP movie writer thing else.”

Stillman’s ‘Damsels’ distresses and depresses

W

riter-director Whit Stillman established a singular tone of vermouth-dry urbanity in his 1990s indie films “Metropolitan,” “Barcelona” and “The Last Days of Disco,” movies filled with smart, amiably self-absorbed young people who seemed drawn from both the preppy culture of the recent past and F. Scott Fitzgerald’s Prohibition-era depictions of the upper crust. Then Stillman disappeared from the screen activity for 14 years, during which time he ran up against creative and financial brick walls. On its surface, Stillman’s fourth film, “Damsels in Distress,” has all the aesthetics of “Metropolitan” and “Barcelona,” featuring a cast that looks bred for a Stillman film — Greta Gerwig, Analeigh Tipton, Aubrey Plaza and Adam Brodyseem like they’ve been waiting most of their lives for Stillman to return. But “Damsels in Distress” is curiously devoid of spark or purpose,

playing like Stillman doing a Stillman parody. Gerwig plays Violet, the leader of a group of young women with floral names at Seven Oaks, a sub-Ivy League university attended by neurotic females and comically dumb males. Rose and Heather (Megalyn Echikunwoke and Carrie MacLemore) follow Violet around on her constant social engineering jag, running an unusually busy suicide prevention center and trying to improve the intellectual standing of the men around them. The trio spots the lost-looking Lily (Tipton) during the first week of classes and takes her under their wings, an occasion that mainly serves as a springboard for Stillman’s observations about campus life, most of which are voiced through Gerwig’s distressingly deadpan delivery. The key difference between “Damsels” and classic Stillman is subtlety. Fraternity boys such as smirky Frank (Ryan Metcalf) feel like momentarily amusing but ultimately flat versions of dumb collegians, and his dense buddy Thor (Billy Magnussen) might seem colorblind at first, but he actually doesn’t know

the names of colors. This broadness is wildly out of place alongside the character of Violet, whose social idealism is descended from Becky Sharp of “Vanity Fair” or Jane Austen’s Elizabeth Bennet, but Gerwig plays the central character as if she’s bored by her own philosophy. This tonal polarity makes “Damsels in Distress” play like The Three Stooges knuckle-heading around in a comedy of manners. There are actual characters named Freak Astaire (Nick Blaemire), Depressed Debbie (Plaza), Mad Madge (Alia Shawkat) andFred Packenstacker (Brody). Stillman used to be better than this, but he names his characters like denizens of an Adam Sandler movie. Toward the close, when Violet both stages a musical number and invents a dance phenomenon, it looks like an attempt to tidy up an out-of-control mess. Unfortunately, that sums up the formlessness of “Damsels in Distress,” a peculiar false comeback for one of the lost heroes of independent filmmaking. — George Lang, Staff Writer

‘The Avengers’ assemble for summer movie kickoff

T

The stars of Marvel Studios’ various movie franchises come together for “Marvel’s The Avengers,” which kicks off the summer movie season. A powerful energy source is stolen from the superspy organization SHIELD, led by director Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson). The Asgardian Loki (Tom Hiddleston) is behind the theft, in concert with a group of aliens with eyes on Earth. The potential danger leads Fury to restart his Avengers Initiative; that plan called for extraordinary individuals to act as a last line of defense for the earth. Tower, an innovative building powered by his clean arc reactor technology. He’s brought back into the Initiative by SHIELD Agent Phil Coulson (Clark Gregg), a mainstay of previous Marvel movies, including “Thor” and both “Iron Man” films. Eventually Fury rounds up his team, who he intends to have hunt down Loki and the power source, called the tesseract. Captain America (Chris Evans) joins up, as does the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), who recruits Bruce Banner (Mark Ruffalo). The team wants him for his scientific mind, though Tony Stark isn’t sure they couldn’t also use his other half — a green monster of rage known as the Hulk, which Banner turns into when angered. They aren’t the only ones on the hunt for Loki —

Loki’s brother Thor (Chris Hemsworth) also seeks the tesseract and his malevolent brother. Director Joss Whedon puts multiple elements and characters into play, and still manages to coalesce everything into a satisfying whole. Fans that have seen previous Marvel movies or read the Marvel comics will probably get up to speed sooner, but Whedon and co-writer Zak Penn have put everything necessary to understand the story on the screen. It’s got enough humor to make the danger that much more thrilling; it has enough humanity amid the CGI carnage to keep all but the most jaded viewer engaged. It’s a great way to kick off this summer of superheroes, and bodes well for Marvel’s heroes going forward. — Matt Price, Features Editor

ere is a number worth remembering: $207.4 million. That is the three-day opening weekend total for “The Avengers,” in which Marvelʼs heroes gathered en masse in this anticipated super-blockbuster directed by Joss Whedon and audiences gathered likewise, breaking the previous record set by “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows, Part 2.” “The Avengers” brought together actors from the casts of “Iron Man” (Robert Downey Jr.), “Iron Man 2” (Samuel L. Jackson, Scarlett Johansson), “Thor” (Chris Hemsworth, Jeremy Renner) and “Captain America: The First Avenger” (Chris Evans), adding in Mark Ruffalo as the new Hulk for good measure. The result is a massive kickoff for the summer movie season. The booming success of “The Hunger Games” and the mass enthusiasm for “The Avengers” has Hollywood hoping for a record 2012. If it makes it there, it will be on the shoulders of some of the summerʼs superheroes. “The Avengers” will be followed by “Amazing Spider-Man” in June and “The Dark Knight Rises” in July. “The Avengers” had already presold more tickets than four of the Marvel films that preceded it, according to MovieTickets.com, and Spider-Man and Batman are responsible for the two highest-grossing superhero films of all time (2008ʼs “The Dark Knight” and 2002ʼs “SpiderMan”), so expectations are high. Another film based on a comic-book series returns for an anticipated sequel: “Men in Black III,” with Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin.Thatʼs just one of the typical swath of summer sequels, reboots and reimaginings: Tim Burton returns with “Dark Shadows,” the Rock suits up for “G.I. Joe: Retaliation” and “Total Recall” gets a Colin Ferrellled remake. From the “who saw that coming?” department, there will be films based on everything from a board game to an instructional manual on pregnancy. But original concepts still have a chance: Pixar provides what looks to be another entertaining animated film with “Brave.” Donʼt forget that studios love to move around release dates, so check your local listings before heading to the movies.

Originally a Gothic soap opera that played on ABC from 1965 to 1971, Burton’s new version stars Johnny Depp as Barnabas Collins, the vampire who returns to his estate after 200 years to find the place in ruins and occupied by dysfunctional descendants. In addition to Depp, “Dark Shadows” also stars Michelle Pfeiffer, Chloe Grace Moretz, Eva Green, Helena Bonham Carter and Jackie Earle Haley.

“FOOTNOTE” >>> This drama from Israel written and directed by Joseph Cedar is a dual character study involving the rivalry between a father and son (Shlomo Bar-Aba, Lior Ashkenazi) who are both professors in Talmudic studies at Hebrew University in Jerusalem.

MAY 16 “THE DICTATOR” >>> Sacha Baron Cohen moves from ambush comedy to narrative comedy, parodying notorious Middle Eastern despots as Admiral General Aladeen, dictator of the fictional Republic of Wadiya. This time he actually acts with a cast, including Ben Kingsley, John C. Reilly and Anna Faris, under the direction of Larry Charles, who helmed the outrageous Baron Cohen mocumentaries “Borat” and “Bruno.”

>>> Inspired by The New York Times best-selling pregnancy guidebook of the same name, screenwriters Shauna Cross (“Whip It”) and Heather Hach (“Freaky Friday”) have created a comedy-drama about five expectant couples experiencing the trials and joys of the childbirth process. Kirk Jones (“Everybody’s Fine”) directs an ensemble cast that includes Cameron Diaz, Jennifer Lopez, Matthew Morrison, Elizabeth Banks, Anna Kendrick, Brooklyn Decker, Wendi McLendon-Covey, Rodrigo, Rob Huebel, Chace Crwaford, Dennis Quaid and Chris Rock.

“THE BEST EXOTIC MARIGOLD HOTEL” >>> An ensemble cast of British acting royalty — including Judi Dench, Maggie Smith, Tom Wilkinson, Bill Nighy, Ronald Pickup and Celia Imrie — star as a group of British seniors seeking golden-years serenity at a retirement haven in India in this comedy from “Shakespeare in Love” director John Madden.

2012 SUMMER MOVIE PREVIEW “DARLING COMPANION” >>> In keeping with “The Big Chill” and “Grand Canyon” tradition, director Lawrence Kasdan brings us another of his boomer-centric dramas, cowritten with wife Meg Kasdan, this time about a longtime married couple who’ve slipped into taking one another for granted. Kevin Kline plays the self-absorbed surgeon and Diane Keaton is the wife who seems to love her rescue dog more than she does her husband. Watch what happens when he loses her mutt. Supporting cast includes Dianne Wiest, Mark Duplass, Elisabeth Moss, Ayelet Zurer and Richard Jenkins.

JUNE 1: “SNOW WHITE AND THE HUNTSMAN”

MAY 25

>>> Box office receipts did not reflect well on “Mirror, Mirror” this spring, but director Rupert Sanders’ feature debut takes a darker path into the same woods. Queen Ravenna (Oscar winner Charlize Theron) sends a Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth of “The Avengers”) to capture Snow White (Kristen Stewart of “The Twilight Saga”), so the evil queen can achieve immortality, but then the Huntsman has doubts as to who is truly the fairest one of all.

“MEN IN BLACK 3” >>> A decade after the last installment, the Men in Black are back. The movie series, based on the comic book written by Lowell Cunningham and illustrated by Sandy Carruthers, stars Will Smith as Agent J and Tommy Lee Jones as Agent K. The agents are members of a secret task force that monitors alien activity on Earth. In “MIB 3,” Agent J must travel back in time to the 1960s to prevent Agent K (played in the 1960s era of the film by Josh Brolin) from being assassinated. “Men in Black 3” also stars Alice Eve, Emma Thompson and Johnny Knoxville.

“MOONRISE KINGDOM”

JUNE 1

>>> Jared Gilman and Kara Hayward play young lovers who run away from their small New England town, shaking up the citizenry and triggering a major search party in this romantic comedy-drama from director Wes Anderson (“Bottle Rocket,” “The Royal

“PIRANHA 3D” >>> As this sequel’s ridiculously upfront and in-your-face title suggests, this killer-fish splatter comedy set in an infested water park aspires to be a

full-bodied success. The follow-up to the over-thetop, ultra-bloody naked hilarity of 2010’s surprise hit, “Piranha 3D” features David Koechner, Katrina Bowden of “30 Rock” and two names synonymous with quality entertainment, David Hasselhoff and Oklahoma’s own Gary Busey.

“BATTLEFIELD AMERICA” >>> No, this is not a sequel to John Travolta’s whacked-out Scientology-fi disaster “Battlefield Earth” — this battle takes place with dance, not “Dianetics.” The musical drama follows a young businessman and a choreographer in their efforts to turn a ragtag bunch of misfits into underground dance superstars. In other words, step up, because you got served.

JUNE 8 “PROMETHEUS” >>> Director Ridley Scott returns to the chestbursting excitement of the “Alien” universe in a new sci-fi adventure that follows a group of space explorers led by Charlize Theron, Noomi Rapace and Michael Fassbender in their quest to find the origin of life. Throughout filming, Scott kept his statements about the “Alien” connection to this new film as vague and elliptical as possible, but allowed that some of the “DNA” of the “space jockey” is present in “Prometheus.”

“MADAGASCAR 3: EUROPE’S MOST WANTED” >>> Thanks to the questionable navigational skills of monkeys and penguins, the “Madagascar” saga could go on forever. In their never-ending quest to return to their posh digs at the Central Park Zoo, Alex the Lion, Marty the Zebra, Melman the Giraffe, and Gloria the Hippopotamus (voiced by Ben Stiller, Chris Rock, David Schwimmer and Jada Pinkett Smith) wind up in a circus traveling through Europe.

In addition to Tatum, “Magic Mike” stars Matthew McConaughey, Oklahoma’s own Olivia Munn and Elvis Presley’s granddaughter, Riley Keough.

“MADEA’S WITNESS PROTECTION” >>> Tyler Perry offers his wisdom about Wall Street greed and the horrors of Recession-era swindling in “Madea’s Witness Protection,” in which an investment banker (Eugene Levy) and his wife (Denise Richards) learn a lot about something or other when they are sentenced to live with sassy senior citizen Madea (Perry) after being convicted in a Ponzi scheme.

uperhero characters from four separate film franchises come together in “Marvel’s The Avengers,” an ambitious comic-book adaptation directed by Joss Whedon. The film stars Robert Downey Jr. as Tony Stark, aka Iron Man; Chris Hemsworth as Thor; Chris Evans as Captain America; and Mark Ruffalo as Bruce Banner, aka the Hulk. Each of those characters has been the star of a solo movie; with the exception of Ruffalo, each actor headlined the movie introducing that character to cinemagoers. hit the screen with Samuel L. Jackson in an eye-patched cameo role as Nick Fury, hinting at a larger cinematic world with more superheroes in it. President of Marvel Studios and producer of “The Avengers,” Kevin Feige, had in mind to create the tapestry that would become “The Avengers” going back that far. “I’ve been a nerd my whole life and wanted to see this movie made for my whole life,” Feige said. “The real answer, though, is sort of towards the end of production of ‘Iron Man’ one, when Sam was gracious enough to spend three hours on a Saturday to come and break into Tony Stark’s house wearing an eye patch and tell him and the world that, uh, you’re part of bigger universe. You just don’t know it yet.” The success of “Iron Man” was the first step toward continuing to create an interconnected Marvel cinematic universe. “And the only challenge was to try to <<<

make all the movies live on their own, even if we weren’t leading towards an ‘Avengers’ movie ‘cause ... if they’re all just interconnected puzzle pieces, that’s not as fun,” Feige said. “They need to be movies beginning to end.” After the success of “Iron Man,” Downey returned for a sequel, “Iron Man 2.” In 2011, Chris Hemsworth and Chris Evans launched their films, “Thor” and “Captain America: The First Avenger,” respectively. Clark Gregg’s Agent Coulson and Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury appeared in multiple films, creating the framework that these heroes live in the same world. Downey said he was impressed by the scope of the concept. “I just remember, I would get nervous about it and excited about it and doubtful of it,” Downey said. “And then by the time, um, you know, I already had a history with Sam, and I was really wanting LOOKATOKC.COM

to capitalize on that. And by the time, uh, Chris and Chris had launched their individual franchises with, uh, success and charisma. And by the time we had Mark, I was like, wow, you know what, this is really gonna happen.” Whedon said successful comics adaptations have to find a space between slavishly imitating the comic on the one hand, and going too far from what made the story successful originally on the other. “It’s capturing the essence of the comic and being true to what’s wonderful about it, while remembering that it’s a movie and not a comic,” Whedon said at a recent news conference about the film. “I think ‘Spider-Man,’ the first one particularly, really captured, you know, they figured out the formula of ‘oh, tell the story that they told in the comic.’ It was compelling, that’s why it’s iconic, but at the same time they did certain things that

only a movie can do and, um, were in the vein of the comic.” Downey said Whedon was able to give each character in the film his own moment to shine, while creating an overall movie that is even greater than the sum of its parts. “This is essentially a comic book movie, but you kind of buy into the reality of it,” Downey said. “So I think everyone has their moments, and I think Joss did a good job of finding everyone’s frequency.” Feige agreed that Whedon’s work on the film kept it from getting overwhelmed with spectacle and special effects. “My biggest interest in the Avengers is the interaction between these people,” Feige said. “And looking at Joss’s body of work and the scripts that he’s written and his TV shows, the characters never ever get lost. In fact, those are the ones — those are the moments that shine.”

‘Star Wars,’ Pixar characters boost Kinect

G

eorge Lucas’ sprawling “Star Wars” universe has always lent itself to games — even if they were as simple as pretend light saber duels in your backyard. “Kinect Star Wars” (LucasArts, for the Xbox 360, $49.99) is a light saber fan’s dream title. Using Microsoft’s Kinect camera, which translates your motions into onscreen activity, you start with training against floating droids shooting red rays. Eventually, you can challenge Darth Vader himself. It’s a good upperbody workout, and you get the signature hum of the famous movie weapon. Pod racing, though, really gets the blood flowing. Using your outstretched arms, you guide your hovering vehicle through a rocky, barren landscape. The racing controls are fairly intuitive, which is essential because there’s no steering wheel to hold in your hands. Racing as San Maxus, a devil-horned dude with red skin, I was able to earn enough alien cred to upgrade my pod with turbo speed. There’s also “Rancor Rampage,” which lets you take control of a huge, destructive beast. Or if you’re in a more peaceful mood, “Galactic Dance Off ” lets you bust some moves while Jabba the Hutt looks on. If you’re a fan of Harmonix’s “Dance Central” for Kinect, you’ll feel right at home. Three out of four stars. <<<

“Kinect Rush: A DisneyPixar Adventure” (Microsoft, for the Xbox 360, $49.99) immerses you in five animated movie worlds: “The Incredibles,” ‘’Cars,” ‘’Ratatouille,” ‘’Up” and “Toy Story.” After creating your avatar, you can stroll around Pixar Park before venturing off into one of the movies. In “Toy Story,” the goal is to reunite stuffed hedgehog Mr. Pricklepants with the little girl who dropped him. Woody the cowboy helps your robot character navigate a minefield of toys and playground obstacles as you chase the car in which the girl is traveling. The graphics are very smooth and the textures on various objects are impressive. In “The Incredibles” episode, you’re transformed into a strapping superhero. There is plenty of running, jumping, zip lining and sliding, and it’s a furious workout even in the comfort of your living room. A flying segment lets you glide with a sidekick through a cavernous facility, trying to track down some villains and bring them to justice. I crashed into a few walls early on, but in time I learned to spread my arms and twist my torso to better control my banking maneuvers. In the “Cars” world, of course, you control a race car; in “Ratatouille,” you’re a Parisian rat. In the section based on “Up,” you join forces with Wilderness Explorer Russell on a variety of missions. Overall, “Kinect Rush” is a lively alternative to watching your kids’ favorite Pixar movie for the 100th time. From The Associated Press

‘THE W I TCHE R 2: AS S AS S I NS OF K I NG S ’

‘The Witcher 2’ will satisfy adult cravings

T

here’s always an element within any role-playing game that fans of the genre will gripe about. While last year’s “The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim” was lauded for a beautiful and expansive open world, it was slammed by others for its somewhat bland combat. On the other hand, “Dark Souls” was hailed for a brutally difficult combat system yet dismissed by those seeking colorful characters and a tangled web of folklore. “The Witcher 2: Assassins of Kings” (Warner Bros., for the Xbox 360, $59.99), with a nearly flawless combination of deep, nonlinear storytelling and challenging combat, satisfies all around. One of 2011’s most popular and critically acclaimed PC games, it comes to the Xbox in a robust “Enhanced Edition” full of bonus content. Playing as the witcher Geralt of Rivia — a mutant who “slays monsters for coin” — you are quickly immersed in a complicated world of political intrigue where loyalties are tested and back stabbing is frequent. With only fragments of his memory intact, Geralt is accused of assassinating the king and seeks the true killer to clear his name. Beyond the main storyline are plenty of colorful characters who need help, so you can pick up monster-hunting jobs here and there — or you can just sit around drinking and arm-wrestling for money. The enjoyable quest log is written from an outsider’s perspective, and the pieces are slowly put together based on the decisions you make. These choices have significant weight, and even those that seem small could have a huge effect on the story as you battle your way toward one of 16 possible endings. Combat is fast-paced, and the Xbox

translation has very responsive controls. The magic spells, called “signs,” work well in tandem with the swordplay. You can cast a sign to protect yourself or throw a ball of flame, but the most amusing sign turns enemies against each other: Hit three foes in succession and enjoy the mayhem. As you gain experience, you earn talent points to spend on three skill trees: swordsmanship, alchemy or magic. The variations are many, making for high replay value. There’s also an intense “Dark Mode” that must be played to unlock even more quests and content. An “Elder Scrolls”-type alchemy system requires you to collect ingredients and formulas to make powerful potions, and you can also collect items to craft and upgrade weapons and armor. The world created by Polish developer CD Projekt Red is incredibly detailed. Sunlight shimmers off bodies of water; forests are hazy and full of shadows; towns and cities are teeming with activity. This is one of the best-looking games to hit Microsoft’s console. The vibrant music and sound effects add to the medieval-fantasy ambience, and with a good audio setup you’ll feel as if you’re actually inside a tavern hearing 10 conversations going on around you while a bard sings a lilting tune. “The Witcher 2” takes awhile to get going, and there are some slight limitations to traveling, though they never really hinder you. If you weather the early frustrations, you’ll meet a wonderful array of people and creatures, including scheming merchants, down-ontheir-luck warriors and hard-drinking dwarfs, all brought to life by strong voice acting. Early on, an elf maiden invites you to a waterfall, hinting at carnal delights — but be careful, because there is far more than meets the eye in the land of Temeria. “The Witcher 2” easily earns its “M’’ rating, with plenty of wild profanity, sexualized nudity and bloodshed. For all of you adult — and I mean adult — gamers out there who hungry for a mature story set within a fantastic world you can lose yourself in, “The Witcher 2” will satisfy your cravings. R& R MUST-HAVE RESORT WEAR FOR A STYLISH GETAWAY L ind Li nd n d a Mi M lll er | Fo F o r Th T h e Ok Okla laho hom man

Nod your head if you’re ready for a vacation. Will it be the beach or the mountains? A quiet resort or big-city excitement? A road trip along historic Route 66 or a leisurely drive on a coastal highway? Whatever you choose, eventually you have another decision to make. What goes in the suitcase? Luckily, this season’s clothing styles are easy to wear and, more importantly, fun to wear. Bold colors and patterns offer a playful mix. Lightweight dresses and tunics aren’t just for the street. Metallic sandals go with everything. Stor y cont inues

Often what you choose is a matter of personal preference or dictated by the locale or climate. But there are certain items that are just a good fit, no matter where you go. “You must have a great pair of white jeans,” said Alex Bratton, buyer for On a Whim at Classen Curve. Skinny jeans are still popular, but if skinny isn’t your style, reach for a pair of straight legs, a pair of white trousers or slimmer fitting crop pants. Bratton also suggests a printed tunic top that can be worn with jeans or as a swimsuit coverup. Try to pick one that will add some texture and color to your vacation wardrobe, she said.

Don’t leave home without a scarf, either, even if you’re heading to the islands. “You can use it to cover up your arms or provide warmth on the plane, or you can wear it as a sarong over your bathing suit,” she said. A little black dress, maybe a tank or slip style, and a white blouse are worthy of a place in your suitcase, too. The blouse can be worn with jeans or shorts, or layered over the dress. The dress is a nice option for dinner, but it goes casual when belted with that scarf you also packed.

“I think you also need an awesome straw tote bag for the beach, for shopping, for the flight,” Bratton said. “Finally, I think you need a flat metallic sandal so you can wear it dressed up at night or completely casual during the day with jeans or a bathing suit.” Shelley Cox, owner of Cayman’s in Norman, said she always grabs a lightweight jacket or sweater when vacationing. Not only is it perfect for the plane trip or in the car, it’s often needed for cool evenings and chilly restaurants. For double-duty style, don’t leave home without a maxi dress, especially one in a bright color or print. It can be worn with flip-flops or wedges and go from casual to dressy. A colorful maxi dress is also perfect as a beach cover-up. And most of the stretchy knit styles pack well and can make the trip without wrinkling, Cox said. A pair of shorts is another item that can be dressed up or down. Add a floral tie blouse and platform wedges, and those shorts can go almost anywhere. Opt for black or another neutral color for the shorts if you must, but what’s interesting and fun this season is the explosion of orange, yellow, lime, turquoise, cobalt and hot pink. Throw in fun colors, and it will brighten any vacation wardrobe. “Everything is bright and cheery. That’s how I would travel,” Cox said.
