NORMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL
S
pring is the time for live music marathons and all-you-can-hear sonic buffets, and South By Southwest sets the standard for multiple choice impossible schedules — every hour of every day during Austin’s annual festival boasts an excellent musical option competing with an equally excellent alternative. But I get just as excited about Norman Music Festival, April 25-27, which features about 200 bands performing over the course of three days in downtown Norman and, in terms of showcasing Oklahoma talent, it cannot be beat. Just take a look at our schedule beginning on page 22: every single hour during this sixth installment of NMF guarantees a difficult decision. This is a great problem to have, since NMF provides continuing testimony to the impressive reserves of talent in our state. So we’re hitting NMF 6 just as hard as we hit SXSW, with many of our columnists and contributors blogging and Tweeting from the festival’s 22 stages. And as we did at SXSW, Dave Morris and I will be uploading performances and BY GEORGE LANG interviews on lookatokc.newsok.com LOOKATOKC EDITOR throughout the event. GLANG@OPUBCO.COM Attendance increases at NMF every BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG year, and while headliners such as The Joy Formidable (see page 19) and JD McPherson are the undeniable attractions for NMF 6, great things await you on the smaller stages, as well. From Thursday evening until the wee hours of Sunday morning, NMF 6 is formidably joyous, whether it’s the biggest stage on Main Street or the back alley at Guestroom Records.

Diplo displays definitive dance dexterity
A
t a point in history where a staggering amount of its recorded music is available to cratedig, nobody’s doing it as aggressively or to as much commercial success as Diplo, the moment’s non-hip-hop producer du jour (though he does do hip-hop when he’s in the mood). Diplo’s amazing level of output has afforded him commercial success, critical appreciation, and an extensive network of connections to pop stars, regional sounds, and underground darlings the world over. He might just be the perfect commercial artist for the age of free downloads and festival billings. I bring Diplo up as a topic because last week saw the release of the second LP from Major Lazer, an act he founded in 2008 with Switch, the producer he first pushed into mainstream awareness thanks to a ditty they produced for M.I.A. called “Paper Planes.” The new album’s called “Free the Universe” and my quick diagnosis is that it’s a lot headier and about half as much immediate fun as “Guns Don’t Kill People … Lazers Do,” the act’s 2009 debut. But rules of the traditional album don’t restrict Diplo’s frenetic, voluminous output, the best of which is often labeled under other artists’ names or surfaces as a remix or oddball collaboration. So here I’ll try to pick out Diplo’s greatest hits, because the amount of cross-pollinating he does from sound

malist, day-glo pastiches of regional dance styles, then “Express Yourself” will probably go down as his masterwork. It’s the perfect combination of New Orleans bounce and aggro-dubstep, meant for one purpose and one purpose only: twerking at a velocity that rattles spines. USHER — “CLIMAX”
Last year’s best R&B ballad was also its most distinct, mostly thanks to Diplo’s ticking time bomb production that lent an appeal to EDM fans and made good on the promise of the title. MAJOR LAZER — “HOLD THE LINE”
The opening spaghetti western guitar picking morphs into a Dick Dale surferdude riff that backbones Major Lazer’s first big single. It’s a perfect platform for some fast-paced reggae lyricism from Mr. Lexx, and I spat out my soda the first time I heard Santigold’s “I make your jeans vibrate like a Nokia” hook.

to sound is simply unparalleled. HOLLERTRONIX — “SO MANY SHRIMP”
The mash-up everybody seems to remember from “Never Scared,” Diplo’s 2003 collaboration party mixtape with a dude named DJ Lowbudget, comes early on when Missy Elliott and Ludacris trade verses from “Gossip Folks” over “Rock the Casbah.” But the way Lil’ Flip and David Banner’s “We ‘Bout Our Money” seamlessly flows into a shout fight on Miracle’s “We Ain’t Scared” before smoothing out into Three 6 Mafia’s “Sippin’ On Some Syrup” disguises how tonally and stylistically diverse each song is. M.I.A. — “HUSSEL”
Part of what made “Kala” sound so jarring and politically agitated was its assortment of tribal-influenced beats, and the one
Diplo and Switch engineer on “Hussel” packs an incredible wallop. Coupled with some found-sound bird whistles and a verse from the accurately named Afrikan Boy, it’s feels like you’re on a tour through a particularly menacing bush. Vampire Weekend sampled a snippet from it on “Diplomat’s Son” from 2010’s “Contra.” MAJOR LAZER — “HALO”
You can’t really call it a cover because Elephant Man’s dancehall version has totally different lyrics, but that solid-gold piano chord progression stays intact here and it’s just devastating. Beyoncé would repay Diplo by sampling Major Lazer’s “Pon De Floor” on “Run the World (Girls),” the first single on “4”. NICKY DA B — “EXPRESS YOURSELF”

CHRIS BROWN — “LOOK AT ME NOW”
He does hip-hop, too! “Look at Me Now” was a rare display of artistry in that its beat became immediately memorable while still leaving plenty of room for the rappers on it to do their thing. And, I mean, c’mon — Busta Rhymes! MAJOR LAZER — “GET FREE”
Diplo showed up on Jimmy Fallon a few weeks ago to promote his new record by playing this one with Dirty Projectors, whose Amber Coffman does the singing. That group’s frontman, David Longstreth, actually does a pretty impressive Usher impression, as they’ve done an impressively faithful cover of “Climax” a couple of times. The dub sound that nudges this one forward proves Diplo’s skill with subtlety, which EDM artists would do well to emulate.

hen I was in fourth grade, I remember wearing a white and gold polka-dot shirt and pants outfit — it was my favorite piece of clothing. I distinctly remember wearing it one day and deciding to pair my turquoise socks with it, knowing they didn’t match and that it was a weird thing to do, yet I did it anyway. It was such a style blunder that, to this day, it sticks with me like a handlebar mustache on Hulk Hogan. We’ve all committed a “What was I thinking?” moment in our fashion lives. Some people commit them on a weekly and even daily basis without even realizing they are making those around them want to turn them in for fashion crimes. I’m not talking about the trendy fashions that we know, in retrospect, looked dumb. That’s just the cycle of fashion. I’m talking about fashion mistakes that are never okay. I’m talking about pants that create a “muffin top” appearance, blazers where the button is holding on for dear life and outfits that match too closely like a child’s school uniform, and pigtails on any occasion are all missteps that should never be seen. I took to Twitter and Facebook to find out what you consider to be the biggest fashion mistakes. Here’s what you had to say. “Panty lines and pants that are too short.” — Amanda Viles “Flip flops and socks, or Crocs.” — Shaundra North Blundell “When I see women out shopping in public with those men’s flannel Jammie bottoms. After the age of 12, it’s just sad.” — Stacy Rippy “Uggs with anything summery. Yuck.” — Cacky Poarch “Honestly, I think it’s up to each individual to wear what he or she can afford and feels comfortable in. Clothing is a very individual choice. Having said that, I won’t date anyone who wears the button-up Hawaiian shirts guys tend to wear once they get older and get a belly.” — Ronna Lay Austin “Muffin tops, Brighton jewelry, rayon, Capri pants, eggplant hair, mom jeans, fake nails, and t-shirts w/ wolves, deer or Tweety Bird.” — Cheena Pazzo (Cpazzo on Twitter) “Mom jeans, hands down the worst.” — Diana C. Jones “Mom jeans.” — Victoria Jabara Williams It seems we have a near consensus on high-waisted, unflattering denim — Jessica Simpson proved mom jeans can have a hugely negative effect on self image. But by showing what not to wear, we are, in effect, saying what to wear. After all, there’s a time and place for pajamas, and it’s usually when and where hundreds of people can’t see them. Now I need to go into my closet and start throwing away the faux pas.

‘Beyond the Pines’ casts Gosling again as daredevil
T
he sins of the fathers are indeed visited upon the sons in “The Place Beyond the Pines,” an emotionally raw, hugely ambitious triptych of interwoven stories about love, loss, regret, revenge, family ties and the things we do to protect our loved ones. Written and directed by Derek Cianfrance, this grainy drama reunites the filmmaker with Ryan Gosling, his star in the working-class domestic drama “Blue Valentine,” and pushes the intense actor into a performance that’s similar to but at the other end of the existential spectrum from his celebrated role in 2011’s “Drive.” In “Drive,” Gosling was a cool character — a mechanic turned stuntman turned getaway driver. “The Place Beyond the Pines” again casts him as a macho daredevil, but this time with a tawdry carnival swagger, a tragic air of doom and a script of body tattoos announcing a lifetime of bad decisions. After opening with a brilliant, breathtaking tracking shot — one camera following Gosling’s motorcycle stunt rider Luke, clad in red leather jacket, <<<

through a raucous, neon-lit midway to a revving, earsplitting performance of his “Wheel of Death” cage act — the movie settles into a first chapter focusing on Luke’s devastating life path. Set in the rust-belt New York city of Schenectady (Iroquois for “the place beyond the pines”), the opening act heats up when Luke bumps into Romina (a de-glammed Eva Mendes), an old one-nightstand, and learns that he’s the father of her toddler. The discovery shakes him to the core and awakens an urgent urge to change his life and provide for his son. With few skills beyond motorcycle tinkering and breakneck riding, Luke takes a job with a seedy shade-tree mechanic, Robin (Ben Mendlesohn, wonderfully squalid). Desperate for money, Luke lets Robin talk him into helping pull off a series of unusual bank robberies, making their getaway with a motorcycle and box van. It’s a bad decision that reverberates in profound and tragic ways through the next two chapters of the story. It wouldn’t be fair to reveal too much about what follows, except to say that chapter two takes off from a brief encounter between Luke and a tenta-

tive rookie cop, Avery (Bradley Cooper, subtle and vulnerable), the straight-arrow son of a powerful politician (Harris Yulin) whose own ambitions clash with his corrupt police colleagues and his domineering dad. Then, chapter three focuses on two wayward, rebellious teenage boys (Dane DeHaan and Emory Cohen), struggling in the wake of their fathers’ misdeeds and veering precariously toward lives of crime. Cianfrance, who cut his filmmaking teeth as a documentarian, has a keen knack for capturing a rough, tactile sense of place and getting raw, naturalistic performances from his actors. And his storytelling ambitions here range from Hitchcockian to Shakespearean, although he relies a bit too much on coincidence and cosmic convergence and he soft pedals the final outcome. Still, “The Place Beyond the Pines” is literate, compelling and high-aspiring storytelling, bringing together a wealth of talent in front of and behind the camera to relate a tale that’s unusually potent in both its beauty and despair. — Dennis King, staff writer

‘42’ swings for the fences and hits standup triple
I
t may not rewrite the rule book, but the earnest biopic “42” does right by groundbreaking baseball player Jackie Robinson. Taking its name from Robinson’s number, which has been retired by every Major League Baseball team, the inspirational sports drama carefully and colorfully documents Robinson’s historic breaking of the sport’s color line when he made his Dodgers debut on April 15, 1947, blazing a trail for other black players. Writer-director Brian Helgeland, whose credits include “A Knight’s Tale,” “Payback” and the Oscarwinning screenplay for “L.A. Confidential,” follows the conventions of one of my favorite cinematic subgenres straight down the line, but the fact-based story is so uplifting and cheer-worthy, it works even if it doesn’t break any new ground in the storytelling arena. Helgeland and his lead actor, Chadwick Boseman, rightly portray Robinson as a talented, likable young man rather than lionizing him as an icon. The filmmaker chronicles Robinson’s historic rookie season through the eyes of his chronicler, now-legendary black sports journalist Wendell
Smith (Andre Holland), who sets the segregated post-World War II scene. To the shock of his staff, canny Brooklyn Dodgers general manager Branch Rickey (Harrison Ford, who takes a go-for-broke attitude, adopting a whole new look, voice and bearing) decides that the time is right for racial integration in baseball and begins the hunt for a black player to break the color line. He is looking for a youngster with a bright future, loads of talent, an affable but not-too-nice demeanor and, most importantly, the toughness to take the coming abuse without wilting or striking back. And he finds all that, although with a bit of a hotheaded attitude, in Robinson, who also has a faithful young wife, Rachel (Nicole Beharie), willing to back his play. The film tracks Robinson’s progress from the Dodgers’ minor league Montreal affiliate to his call up to the bigs, where a group of his teammates, led by hard-case right-fielder Dixie Walker (Choctaw native Ryan Merriman), sign a petition vowing they won’t play with him. To Helgeland’s credit, “42” doesn’t shy away from
depicting the era’s rampant racism to the extent the PG-13 rating allows. Robinson and Smith have to flee towns in the middle of the night because of lynch mob rumors, a small-town sheriff threatens to arrest the player if he doesn’t leave the field, and in a particularly stomach-churning sequence, Phillies manager Ben Chapman (Alan Tudyk) hurls vile insults like fastballs every time Robinson is at bat. Still, Robinson endures, his wife and Rickey sustain him, and with the exception of Dixie and a few other holdouts, his teammates grow to respect and support him. With the exception of Ford, Helgeland depends not on stars but on stalwart utility players like Christopher Meloni, T.R. Knight and Lucas Black to tell Robinson’s story. For the most part, they deliver the goods, with John C. McGinley darn near stealing the show with his turn as dry-witted sportscaster Red Barber. It may not be a cinematic grand slam, but “42” does a fine job sharing and celebrating Robinson’s legacy, which makes it a solid win.

eave it to architecture student turned filmmaker Joseph Kosinski to conjure up a post-apocalyptic planet Earth that’s so Spartan and au courant, so beautifully desolate and elegantly shabby, that you half expect hipster haute couture models to come traipsing across its ruined landscape. Call it dystopian chic. That’s the oh-so-vogue scenario that Kosinski (maker of the visually lush but narratively sterile “Tron Legacy”) has designed for his sophomore film, “Oblivion,” Tom Cruise’s second outing in the past six months as a blandly brooding loner named Jack. Following up his turn as a noirish knight errant in “Jack Reacher,” Cruise now dons a New York Yankees cap and steps into a silvery leather jumpsuit as Jack Harper, a former Marine who patrols the devastated, radiation-poisoned precincts of Earth, circa 2077, after it was laid waste by marauding aliens. Surviving humans were evacuated to Titan, one of Saturn’s moons, leaving Harper and his partner Vika (Andrea Riseborough) ensconced in a stylishly

minimalist, hermetically sealed aerie above New York City to patrol around in a mosquito-like helicopter and mop up any rebellious human Scavengers, or Scavs. Jack is a broody fellow, haunted by images of a world before the apocalypse. He reminisces about the final Super Bowl (in 2017), listens to scratchy old vinyl albums (Pink Floyd’s “The Wall”) and is partial to the Victorian verse of Thomas Macaulay (“And how can man die better than facing fearful odds?”). Under the watchful computer eye of headquarters — personified by the chirpy digital image of Sally (Melissa Leo, wasted in a phoned-in performance) — Harper and Vika are about to finish their tour and return to Titan when events conspire to ... well, push the plot into some very convoluted territory. First, Harper happens upon a wrecked spacecraft containing several hibernating humans, and manages to bring back the sole survivor. She’s Julia (Olga Kurylenko, recently seen in “To the Wonder”), and as it turns out she just happens to be Harper’s long-lost former wife. Then, Harper and Julia are kidnapped by the rebel Scavs, who are commanded by the brainy

Morgan Freeman and the hotheaded Nikolaj CosterWaldau, and that leads to an unlikely series of twists, turns and betrayals that seem stale and contrived at best and that defy all logic at worst. Not surprisingly, the screenplay by Kosinski and Karl Gajdusek and a couple of other writers is based on an unpublished comic book, and that’s part of the problem. The story feels half thought-out, like a bunch of guys brainstorming cool ideas without any truly unifying narrative. It helps that Kosinski has a first-rate cast that elevates even the most sophomoric writing and that Cruise, though aging, is still cruising along at the top of his game with his cocky, movie-star mojo. And it helps that Kosinski is a visual artist par excellence. His movie looks devastatingly exquisite. But he lavishes so much attention on surface, texture, fashion and architecture that he forgets to attend to the essential details of storytelling. “Oblivion” is a lavishly wrapped package that contains only tatty, shopworn goods. — Dennis King, staff writer

holesale dismissal of dubstep, that velocity-driven electronic subgenre dominated by Skrillex-style bass drops and “wub-wub” instrumentation, is like throwing the baby out with both the bathwater and the hopelessly stupid, lowest common denominator jock jams. James Blake and Skrillex occupy the same musical territory in much the same way that John Coltrane and Kenny G are both jazz saxophonists. Blake’s second album, “Overgrown,” finds the 23-year-old continuing to write songs first and throw effects later. At the forefront is Blake’s voice, an elastic instrument suggesting a soulful middle ground between Thom Yorke, Antony Hegarty and Bryan Ferry. a moody piano-and-orchestra ballad in which depth charges and bursts of percussion are the seasoning, not the meal, and layers in multiple voices and haunting refrains on “I Am Sold” and the earworm ballad “Life Round Here.” And on “Take a Fall for Me,” Blake invites RZA into the mix for a magnetically attracted meeting of the minds, with Blake cutting and pasting himself around RZA’s verses about jealousy and romantic desperation. Perhaps even more so than Blake’s 2011 debut, “Overgrown” suggests that dubstep might only be applied to Blake for lack of a better term, and that he is built of more solid stuff than the latest permutation of electronic dance music. ‘THE TERROR’ — THE FLAMING LIPS
W
ith “The Terror,” the lights go out on The Flaming Lips’ psychedelic midway, leaving ringmaster Wayne Coyne to stumble and grope his way through the darkness. And predictably, he does not like what he’s feeling. While the brown-acid fuzztones of 2009’s “Embryonic” occupied a largely negative head space, “The Terror” is not hallucinatory in the least. It is bleak but frighteningly clear-eyed and confrontational, which makes for a more unsettling experience once Kliph Scurlock’s martial drums and Steven Drozd’s razor-funk guitar on the opening “Look ... the Sun Rising” give way to purgatorial drones and blips. It is an album powered by pulse and shaped by serotonin imbalance, populated by sad souls “walking away on a bridge to nowhere,” as Coyne sings on “Try to Explain.” At the dark heart of “The Terror” is “You Lust,” in which Coyne dishes out and takes close-to-thebone critiques about moral failings. “You Lust” goes on for nearly 10 minutes, with Coyne and guest vocalist Sarah Barthel, of Phantogram, backed by industrial blasts of static and Krautrock repetition as they exchange brutal truths. From there, “The Terror” never really gets easier, closing with “Always There, In Our Hearts,” a pretty title fronting a pretty defeated sentiment — Coyne finishes the album by repeating the word “overwhelmed” as the full force of the Flaming Lips’ drone machine gives way to crowd noise. “The Terror” does represent a nearly wholesale rebuilding of the Lips’ sound, offering the reward of frequently exceptional headphone music for those who can

brave the emotional undertow, and even while baring his fears and resentment for all to experience, Coyne takes an understated vocal approach — his singing is almost spectral, emanating from a far remove. “The Terror” will leave plenty of Lips fans as overwhelmed as Coyne feels in “Always There, In Our Hearts,” and these are people who have stayed with the group through both its ebullient reveries and its challenging experiments encased in candy skulls. But this is part of the bargain of being a career Flaming Lips fan: occasionally the race for the prize takes a dark detour. — George Lang, LOOKatOKC editor

album review ‘JUST FEELS GOOD’ – THOMPSON SQUARE
‘J
ust Feels Good,” the sophomore album from contemporary country duo Thompson Square, lives up to its title as well as the promise of the couple’s eponymous 2011 breakout. Over the past few years, the pairing of Miami, OK, native Keifer Thompson and his wife of 14 years, Shawna, has become one of country’s best feel-good success stories. The aspiring musicians moved to Nashville, Tenn., the same week, fell in love and toiled in obscurity for more than a decade before at long last earning a deal at Stoney Creek Records. Their debut album became a smash on the strength of the sweet Grammy-nominated single “Are You Gonna Kiss Me or Not.” “Just Feels Good” sticks with the couple’s strengths — namely their excellent harmonies and obvious chemistry — with all 13 tracks addressing various stages of romance. With the exception of the effectively somber lead single “If I Didn’t Have You,” already a top 10 hit and rising on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart, the tone of the album is overwhelmingly effervescent, dominated by bright melodies, catchy electric guitars and sing-along choruses. The Thompsons co-wrote six of the tracks, collaborating with Oklahoma-bred songsmith Brett James on the bouncy opener “Everything I Shouldn’t Be Thinking About,” with the couple playfully bantering about ignoring their mundane chores to sneak in some extra time between the sheets, and the equally appealing “Life of Me,” which revels in how a relationship can work despite divergent tastes and personalities. The couple, who won their second straight vocal duo of the year title at Sunday’s Academy of Country Music Awards, entwine faith and love on the anthemic “You Don’t Get Lucky,” affectionately look at how far they’ve come together with “That’s So Me and You” and celebrate the certainty of marital bliss with the closer “Home Is You.” Romance takes the backseat in the reggae-infused, backroads-cruising title track and the infectious live-in-the-moment rocker “Here’s to Being Here,” but for the most part, there’s a lot of love — and a lot to love — on “Just Feels Good.” — Brandy McDonnell, entertainment writer

And then: What if you could watch the consequences of your actions on TV the next week? That’s the premise behind “Defiance” (for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99), a collaboration between the online game studio Trion Worlds and cable TV’s Syfy. By the time “Defiance” the TV show debuts Monday, “Defiance” the video game will have been out for a few weeks — enough time for players to make their own mark on this new universe. Both the game and the TV drama are set in 2046, some 30 years after the Votan collective of alien species arrived in the skies over Earth. After a brutal war, the humans and aliens have settled into an uneasy peace, but alien technology that crashed to Earth has drastically changed the landscape. The “Defiance” game shows the effects of these “arkfalls” on California’s Bay Area, now a wasteland packed with bloodthirsty mutants, hostile cyborgs and overgrown, fire-spewing insects. Your character — male or female, human or Votan — is an ark hunter who makes a living by scavenging from crash sites, and the search for a particular alien artifact brings you to the West Coast. Soon after your arrival, the game’s sprawling map opens up, letting you choose from dozens of missions. You can race dune buggies around the wilderness. You can infiltrate raider strongholds and steal their loot. You can rescue farm-
ers from “hellbug” infestations. Most missions can be handled solo, but if you stumble across a major arkfall you’re going to need help from other online players. You’ll also discover “episode missions” that relate to the next week’s installment of the “Defiance” TV show. In the first such adventure, you meet military veteran Joshua Nolan and his partner, an alien named Irisa. They ask for your help retrieving a lost Votan doohickey, which turns out to be a significant plot device in the premiere of the Syfy drama. The titular town of Defiance was built on the ruins of St. Louis, so I don’t know how many of its characters will visit us ark hunters out West. But both sides of the “Defiance” team have collaborated on building an impressive world, and I’m eager to see where they go from week to week. I was able to battle through the initial batch of episode missions in just a few hours, but there’s plenty more to do. As with any online shooter, you can engage in raucous death matches with your fellow humans. Or you can enroll in the Shadow War, in which huge teams of up to 64 players each battle for control of sites all over the map. Such massively multiplayer epics are popular among computer gamers, but we haven’t seen many on consoles. I’ve been playing “Defiance” on the Xbox 360, and I love being able to use an Xbox controller instead of a PC’s keyboard and mouse. On the other hand, I was frequently unable to log onto Trion’s servers during the first few days after the game went on sale. That problem has eased up, but there are still too many glitches, from unresponsive controls to disappearing inventory items. There’s also a wearying sameness to the bulk of the missions, which typically consist of racing to a location, killing a bunch of monsters and retrieving some object. The action is intense and challenging, often reminiscent of 2K Games’ fine “Borderlands.” But it’s missing that series’ twisted sense of humor, and I’m hoping Trion delivers more variety in future episodes. It’s a work in progress; for now, I give it two stars out of four. — The Associated Press

NORMAN MUSIC FESTIVAL HEADLINER THE JOY FORMIDABLE BREAKS THROUGH ROMANTIC TURMOIL TO CREATE A POWERFUL SECOND ALBUM, “WOLF’S LAW”
R
STORY BY GENE TRIPLETT ENTERTAINMENT EDITOR, THE OKLAHOMAN
itzy Bryan and Rhydian Dafydd spent a cozy three weeks in January 2012 sequestered in a cabin in the snow-carpeted woods outside of tiny Casco, Maine, making beautiful music together in more ways than one. They were a couple, and they were bandmates, and they had their love and their songwriting to keep them warm. A year later, their powerful whisper-to-a-roar pop songs were released on “Wolf’s Law,” the sensational sophomore album from The Joy Formidable. And Ritzy and Rhydian are no longer a couple. But in the best tradition of Fleetwood Mac — which famously survived divorce and broken romance among its members — The Joy Formidable forges on, and Ritzy will be out front on vocals and guitar with Rhydian backing her up on bass and Matt Thomas bringing the story continues »

thunder on drums when the Welsh alternative power trio takes the main stage Saturday night as the headlining act at Norman Music Festival 6. “We decided to call time on our relationship in November, but we haven’t really talked about it that much,” the blonde, blueeyed frontwoman said in a phone interview from the band’s Salt Lake City tour stop. “I mean, I’m happy to mention it in interviews,” she said. “I think we definitely felt like, you know, we’ve known each other for a very long time. We grew up in the same area. And the music came first. We started the band before we actually became a romantic couple. I think, you know, we’re in a really good place now.” One wonders if those long winter days and nights in that isolated cabin on the northeastern-most tip of the United States might have caused romantic ties to unravel, but Ritzy credits the snowy peacefulness of their surroundings for much of the inspiration that went into the writing and recording of “Wolf’s Law,” which boasts richer instrumentation and production and more accomplished songwriting than The Joy Formidable’s wellreceived and aptly-titled 2011 debut, “The Big Roar.” The beauty and cruelty of nature, the brevity of life, familial breakdowns and the need to seize the moment are recurring themes throughout the album, from the towering, buzzsaw-edged beauty of “Cholla” to the elegiac acoustic ballad “Silent Treament,” the lofty, pulsing, wall-of-guitar anthem “Forest Serenade” and the stunning orchestral grandeur that is the album finale, “The Turnaround.” “I think we needed somewhere that was very peaceful and away from it all, so Maine and Casco definitely fit that description,” Ritzy said. story continues » <<<

The band’s 2011 tour had come to a premature end when a Portland, Maine, concert was canceled, and a friend recommended the forest retreat to the road-weary Ritzy and Rhydian. “We were really drawn to this little cabin in the woods, because we have a mobile kind of recording studio that comes with us everywhere,” the singer said. We really kind of liked the sense of peacefulness and we were there for a week over Thanksgiving and completely fell in the love with the surroundings and the little cabin and I think just the writing and the focus and the energy was just really powerful, so we just decided that we had to go back there in January and finish the record.” The couple began by capturing ideas on tape, recording the bulk of the album’s vocals and guitars at the hideaway. Drums, orchestrated sections and choirs would be added later at studios in London. “People have asked if we had cabin fever, because we got snowed in, in about nine feet of snow,” Ritzy said. “And there were just the two of us, just Rhydian and myself. And you know it was kind of nice because it was kind of like going back to a kind of a really basic way of living. You know, we actually managed to live off of one chicken for about two and a half weeks.” She laughed, adding, “There was a really good energy. We didn’t really see anybody else for those three weeks. And I think you kind of start to realize you’ve been isolated for a while when you start talking to all the animals that come to the doorstep. “There was like an opossum, he used to visit every night, he kind of caught on to the fact that I’d feed him, and the squirrels and the deer in the forest. ... I don’t know, it was like f - - - - - - Snow White or something.” Ritzy is proud of the music that

resulted from that time alone with Rhydian, and she admits that at least a couple of the songs on the album are deeply personal expressions of the feelings that have passed between them, such as the alternately tough and tender rocker called “Tendons.” “Yeah, it’s an incredibly difficult thing, to maintain a relationship
in a band,” she said. “And the thing we feel even more passion about is the band and the music. I think we definitely feel like we’ve got a new chapter ahead of us that’s a little bit less complicated. There’s such a lot of friendship and respect and it really hasn’t changed the dynamic of the band. “But it’s quite strange looking
back on some of the songs that we’ve written, you know, because on this album there’s definitely a song that celebrates our friendship but maybe preempted kind of our split and how difficult we were finding parts of the relationship. But it’s a real testament to how much we care about the band, and what good friends we are.”

n an aging strip mall on the corner of NW 23 Street and MacArthur Boulevard, African flavor is taking root. Between a West Indian/African market and the Ethiopian destination Queen of Sheba, a new restaurant serving West African fare recently opened. The restaurant is Mama Sinmi’s Chop House, 2312 N MacArthur Blvd., specializing in allnatural, authentic cuisine from West Africa. In a small room off the kitchen at Mama Sinmi’s, owner/chef Ijeoma Popoola straddles a large wooden mortar carved from the trunk of a tree and works it with a pestle carved from a limb of the same tree. Wearing a traditional African skirt and a star-quality smile, Popoola is making traditional fufu, a staple of her home country of Nigeria. She is Mama Sinmi,
a name that comes from the Nigerian tradition of a mother honoring her firstborn by taking their name. Her husband, Andrew Popoola, who also was born in Nigeria, likes to talk about how they come from the same place but from wildly different cultures. Andrew Popoola, who moved to this country at the age of 12 and was educated in Florida and the United States Air Force, says there are hundreds of languages in use today in Nigeria alone. He describes a scene which doesn’t sound too different from the biblical tale of the Tower of Babel. “That’s why we had to adopt English so there would be one language we all understood,” he said. “Even though it’s pidgin English.” In this 22-seat cafe adorned with a beautiful mural by Bob Palmer on the south wall, the Popoolas are sharing
the story of a couple born in Africa and raised to contribute to Western civilization. Andrew Popoola served in the Air Force as an Air Battle Manager. Though not in active duty now, he maintains reserve status, meaning he still devotes a good portion of his time to the security of the United States at Tinker Air Force Base. While he’s protecting our freedoms, Ijeoma Popoola is back at her wood-carved mortar spinning their story through the simple dish called fufu. You’ll see restaurants advertise rustic Italian cuisine or rustic Southern cuisine. It doesn’t get anymore rustic than fufu. “The food in West Africa is truly natural and organic,” Ijeoma Popoola says with an enthusiasm impossible to prefabricate.

In her mortar are boiled yams and cassavas with dried oats and banku, a blend of ground, fermented corn and cassavas. The ingredients are ground and worked into a tacky paste hand-rolled into balls and served with a variety of dishes. Diners pinch pieces away from the balls of fufu and tamp them into discs fit for scoop or swiping. The fufu offers little flavor as it is built to balance the intensely spicy flavors of the dishes they partner with on the table. Those dishes include egusi, which is derived from shelled gourd seeds mashed with palm oil, and broth. The texture is similar to hummus. Ijeoma mixes in fresh spinach leaves and as much Scotch bonnet pepper as you can handle. The fufu menu also includes okra, which is served with spinach in a spicy tomato sauce with hot peppers, onion and palm oil. Ogbono is similar to egusi but rather than gourd seeds, mango seeds are used. Efo is a sauteed spinach dish and spicy broth. Mama Sinmi’s also serves a variety of pepper soups, which feature braised meats and bold, earthy flavors. For starters, Mama Sinmi’s offers suya, which is beef marinated in a ginger-peanut mixture and grilled. Moin-moin is a dish that’s similar to tamales, made with mashed beans rather than corn. Ijeoma Popoola also offers savory pastries filled with ground beef, potatoes and carrots. The menu also includes a variety of fried rice dishes for less adventurous diners. Andrew Popoola’s contributions to the menu are the beverages. “We’ve got some bottled drinks imported from Africa, and I also make some mixed fruit drinks,” he said. “We’ve got cappuccino on the menu. It’s not from Africa, I just make a killer cappuccino.” If you like ginger, try a Vita Malt Ginger drink. Like so much of the flavors at Mama Sinmi’s, there is no subtlety or bashfulness in these bottles. Malted drinks are preferred in West Africa over soda pop. Guinness even makes a nonalcoholic version of its stout in Nigeria called Malta Guinness. Mama Sinmi’s is called a Chop House not because they serve steaks but because “chop” is a generic term for food in Nigeria. You can get your chop on from noon to 9 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 10 p.m. Saturdays. The Popoolas warn you that West Africans like to commiserate, and aren’t shy about striking up conversation with strangers. “We are a little loud, and we like to have fun,” Andrew Popoola said. My kind of people ... and they cook.
