his is LOOKatOKC’s ﬁfth swimsuit issue, and by now I should be used to the stunning Oklahoma women who populate these editions and the beautiful photography of Chris Landsberger, and yet I think we reached a personal best this year. When we started receiving portfolios earlier this spring, I was immediately impressed with the response — we’ve always had gorgeous models in our pages every year, but this is a classic. These issues are also a ﬁne showcase for designers, and for David Downham, our lead project designer, this issue caps off a full year of spectacular work. David came on as our designer immediately after last year’s issue, and he has built his own acute design aesthetic into LOOKatOKC. Put David and Chris together with great models and amazing Oklahoma locations, and everything just works seamlessly. Furthermore, I cannot thank our friends at Fitzsimmons Architects enough for volunteering their homes every year for location shots. David will be leaving us after this issue to return to his native Indiana, and I cannot fully express the artistic impact his work has had on LOOKatOKC. ‘Trek’ reboot invokes shadowy conspiracy

n the second installment of J.J. Abrams’ “Star Trek” reboot, the crew of the Enterprise must face a danger to Starfleet that tests the Earth’s resolve to peacefully explore the galaxy. Chris Pine returns as Captain James T. Kirk, a roguish young captain with a tendency to bend — or ignore entirely — the rules of the organization when they conflict with his conceptions of right and wrong. His first officer, the half-human, half-Vulcan Spock (Zachary Quinto), follows the rules to the letter, and makes his decisions based on logic. A disagreement on a mission leads to Kirk getting in hot water with the Starfleet brass. But Kirk’s personnel issues quickly become secondary when Starfleet is

attacked by the shadowy John Harrison (Benedict Cumberbatch, “Sherlock”), who then flees to the Klingon home planet. Kirk, Spock and the Enterprise crew give chase but find themselves in the middle of a mystery that puts the entire crew — and perhaps the entire planet — at risk. Abrams is brilliant at moving along the action, and it’s riveting throughout. While some Trekkers might prefer a little more time spent on the philosophical underpinnings, they are nonetheless present. Each of the classic characters gets a moment or more to shine; Scotty (Simon Pegg) provides a moment of moral certitude; McCoy (Karl Urban) finds a solution in the darkest hour; Sulu (John Cho) shows his nerves of steel. Zoe Saldana’s Uhura gets to show

both her resourcefulness and her depth of emotion in a pair of scenes during a covert mission. While remembering these characters from their previous incarnations does help to fill in context, the movie works without that layer. Cumberbatch is simply fantastic as the villain; his gravitas gives this “Star Trek” a boost. Pine and Quinto’s chemistry as captain and first officer and as friends and crewmates drives the film. In many ways, it’s Quinto’s film to carry, and he does so marvelously. While the headstrong Kirk developing into a leader and captain is compelling, the development of Quinto’s Spock as a man of two heritages navigating a brave new world is, in a word, fascinating. — Matt Price, features editor

‘Gatsby’ is extravagant, eye-popping

Scott Fitzgerald meets Cirque du Soleil in director Baz Luhrmann’s extravagant, eye-popping 3-D adaptation of “The Great Gatsby,” an artful mash-up that blends Shakespearean tragedy with Roaring ‘20s razzmatazz, crisp Brooks Brother style with Art Deco opulence, and the classic Jazz Age swing of Bryan Ferry with the urban beats of Jay-Z and Beyonce. In an energetic, though often overwhelming and over-the-top effort to make Fitzgerald’s enduring 1925 novel feel urgent and contemporary, the producers have given free rein to Luhrmann to work his unique brand of screen magic. And the consummate Australian showman, whose resume ranges from the stagey “Red Curtain” trilogy of films — “Strictly Ballroom,” “Romeo + Juliet” and “Moulin Rouge” — to a plush, carnivalesque 2002 Broadway production of “La Boheme,” pulls out every trick in his repertoire. The director’s penchant for operatic excess often seems at war with his obvious regard for the lyrical, keyed-up brilliance of Fitzgerald’s language and his tragic love story. But behind all the visual filigrees and the pulsing rhythms of the movie, the core story of shady, self-made millionaire Jay Gatsby (Leonardo DiCaprio, looking like the starched and pressed Arrow Shirt man) and his obsessive love for flighty

debutante Daisy Buchanan (wispy Carey Mulligan in blonde bobbed hairdo) comes through clearly and faithfully. It’s all told through the eyes (and the voice-over narration incorporating Fitzgerald’s magical prose) of bright-eyed Midwesterner Nick Carraway (Tobey Maguire, whose face is an open book). Nick is a Fitzgerald-like Ivy Leaguer, an aspiring writer seeking his fortune in New York, circa 1922, in a postwar era of loosening flapper morals, flowing bootleg booze and intoxicating jazz music. Nick settles into a vine-covered cottage in Long Island’s nouveau riche West Egg, across the glittering bay from old-money East Egg, where his flighty cousin Daisy lives with her bullying, philandering, blue-blooded husband Tom Buchanan (blustery Joel Edgerton). Next door in the Xanadu-style mansion of Jay Gatsby, Nick is soon drawn by the glamglittery nightly parties and their decadent displays of debauchery. And before long, Nick is summoned by Gatsby and enlisted as an ally in a carefully planned effort to lure in and woo Daisy. As Nick finds himself pulled deeply into the world of the super rich and seduced by Gatsby’s intoxicating vision of romance and life reinvented, the stage is set for a harrowing tragedy that reveals the dark, decadent underside of the American dream. Luhrmann’s “Gatsby” stands in stark contrast to the last effort to film the novel — director Jack Clayton’s 1974 version, a prim and decorous period piece that had Robert Redford as Gatsby, Sam Waterston as Nick and Mia Farrow as Daisy. Employing occasionally effective but largely unnecessary 3-D effects and interspersing riffs of hip-hop and contemporary music into the period score, Luhrmann’s version is anything but period prim. It’s throbbing with energy and a jumpy, off-kilter vibe that aptly echoes the youthful impatience and yearning of the Jazz Age. While literary purists might balk at Luhrmann’s poetic liberties and his ringmaster style, his flamboyant film makes a strong case for the durability and timelessness of Fitzgerald’s classic. Even tarted up in the most garish of cinema finery, “The Great Gatsby” retains its essential dignity through all the frenzy. — Dennis King, staff writer

‘MODERN VAMPIRES OF THE CITY’ — VAMPIRE WEEKEND

he Internet trolls saw blood in the Hudson back in 2007, when the first pan-cultural Vampire Weekend sounds started trickling out and the images of an immaculately dressed band of Upper West Siders emerged. The commentariat didn’t want to be told what to like, and so Vampire Weekend’s first full album was met in January 2008 with a pre-emptive backlash. But that album and its better successor, 2010’s “Contra,” vanquished the trolls, and “Modern Vampires of the City” blows their dust off the Triborough Bridge. Most of the change evident on “Modern” can be chalked up to artistic maturity rather than any obvious redirections of course. The sonic nods to “The Royal Tenenbaums” and Paul Simon’s “Graceland” that dominated the first two albums are now part of the multitudes within Vampire Weekend’s sound, Ezra Koenig’s lyrical stance has

achieved more weight and delicacy, and lead orchestrator and musical force Rostam Batmanglij, sort of the Steven Drozd to Koenig’s Wayne Coyne, has become a master of musical dynamics and judgment. The thoroughly lovely “Step” might quote from the early-’90s Souls of Mischief track “Step to My Girl” and has subtle hip-hop undertones, but it is an example of Vampire Weekend absorbing more musical textures into its fabric rather than making a whole-cloth change. And “Diane Young” raves on like 21st century Buddy Holly — it isn’t ‘50s rock ‘n’ roll, but it doesn’t take a microscope to see the DNA. “Modern Vampires of the City” is filled with great examples of the band putting daring ideas to music: the shrill, flanged Chipmunk voice that dives into the chorus on “Ya Hey” sounds like a nightmare at first, but a few spins reveal it as a genius move — it’s hard to imagine the song without it. And ballads are becoming one of Vampire Weekend’s

strongest suits, just in time for Koenig’s lyrical skills to deserve an epic treatment like “Hannah Hunt.” Koenig sings about a pivotal college road trip with Hunt, who fronts her own band, Dominant Legs: “Our days were long our nights no longer, count the seconds, watching hours/ Though we live on the U.S. dollar, you and me, we got our own sense of time.” It’s Koenig’s “Born to Run” moment and, in LOOKATOKC.COM

a way, “Modern Vampires of the City” is a transformative third album in the way that “Born to Run” was for Bruce Springsteen. It is the album that takes Vampire Weekend, once a promising young band with plenty of people questioning their worth or longevity, and secures their place in rock ‘n’ roll’s future. — George Lang, LOOKatOKC editor I

‘DARK AND DIRTY MILE’ — JASON BOLAND & THE STRAGGLERS

ason Boland & The Stragglers keep steadfastly walking the classic country road with “Dark and Dirty Mile,” the renowned Austin, Texas-based band’s seventh studio album. Released Tuesday, the follow-up to 2011’s excellent “Rancho Alto” showcases the worn-leather baritone of singer/songwriter/guitarist Boland as well as the hardearned musicianship of his road-tested red dirt outfit, which includes guitar, pedal steel and resophonic guitar player Roger Ray, bassist Grant Tracy, drummer Brad Rice and fiddler/mandolin player Nick Worley. More than that, the album, which Boland coproduced with Shooter Jennings, son of the legendary Waylon Jennings, affirms the band’s dedication to its hard-core country sound, folk songwriting sensibilities and outlaw country attitudes.

A Harrah native and former Oklahoma State University student, Boland, 38, again proudly shows his deep Oklahoma music roots on the new album, which features a stellar rendition of red dirt pioneer Randy Crouch’s thoughtprovoking “They Took It Away.” Like the somber story song “Ludlow” and the snappy and sharply worded cautionary tale “Nine Times Out of Ten,” the cover expresses what the frontman considers a healthy suspicion of the powers that be. Even the two-stepping ballad “Electric Bill” includes the timely and darkly funny lyric “When they need to take a closer look at what it means to love, they can watch with a drone from miles above.” In classic country fashion, “Dark and Dirty Road” walks the line between topical and timeless. The gorgeous love song “Lucky I Guess” seems custom crafted for two-stepping, while the closing ode “See You When I See You” tenLOOKATOKC.COM

derly bids “happy travels my old friend.” The loping Tex-Mex anthem “Spend All Your Time” channels the elder Jennings while urging listeners to really live life. The rowdy rocker “Green Screen” cuttingly jabs at our society’s lies and false fronts, but authenticity isn’t a problem for the new album. Recorded to tape at Cedar Creek Recording in Austin.

“Dark and Dirty Mile,” like the title track that opens the 11-song collection, has a warm, live and real vibe. ‘HERE TONIGHT: THE “WHITE LIGHT” DEMOS’ — GENE CLARK

im (aka Roger) McGuinn is generally considered to be the chief architect of the Byrds’ electric 12-string, layered-harmony folkrock sound, and he was indeed the lead voice and guitar on that band’s ﬁrst hit single, their famous 1965 cover of Bob Dylan’s “Mr. Tambourine Man.” It was a sound that inﬂuenced a slew of artists — including the Beatles — during that revolutionary rainbow decade and beyond. But a solid argument can be made for Gene Clark, the second-most prominent and perhaps most distinctive voice in that L.A. band, as the best songwriter of the bunch, since he penned such heart-swelling tunes as “Feel a Whole Lot Better,” “Here Without You,” “She Don’t Care About Time” and “Eight Miles High.” He left after the second Byrds album (1966’s “Turn, Turn, Turn”) and went on to a series of country-rock collaborations

with the Gosdin Brothers, Doug Dillard, Carla Olson of the Textones, and even a couple of reunion projects with former Byrds partners — not to mention a series of brilliant but commercially ignored solo albums — before heavy drinking and ill health took their ﬁnal toll on him in 1991. Still, his amazing talent for songwriting and performing in his distinctive, quavering baritone never really diminished much, even toward the end of his life, and his legacy of recorded works is wondrous. The “White Light” demos contained hereon are previously unreleased examples of his emotion-stirring artistry, as he sings and accompanies himself on acoustic guitar and harmonica on a collection of 12 songs intended for his 1971 album, which ended up simply titled “Gene Clark,” considered by many to be one of the great singer-songwriter albums of the era, produced by Clark’s friend, Oklahoma’s Jesse Ed Davis.

It’s all Dylan-esque, to be sure, and melancholy as all-get-out, but excellent ﬁreside music for lovers of any generation from the ‘60s to the present. “Here Tonight” (which didn’t make the cut on LOOKATOKC.COM
