K

erry Myers’ new column for LOOKatOKC is called “Sounds Like Oklahoma,” a title that captures our current melodic state. Her column will consistently provide a space not only for discovering homegrown live music, but will serve as a continually evolving definition of Oklahoma music. Kerry’s column gives instant answers for readers who need weekend music guidance and covers our scene from the perspective of a constantly engaged music head. I met Kerry (@jane4oh5 on Twitter) a few years ago at Norman Music Festival. She is always at the best shows and never fails to promote the most promising rock, hip-hop, pop and roots acts from this area. If a band is worth hearing tonight, Kerry is there. As you will see on the next page, “Sounds Like Oklahoma” is packed with instant musical gratification: Kerry includes mobile scans that provide concert, ticket and artist information, complete schedules for festivals, download sites for free independent albums and the latest local BY GEORGE LANG music videos. This way, she is backing LOOKATOKC EDITOR up her authority on these shows and GLANG@OPUBCO.COM acts by giving LOOKatOKC readers BLOG.NEWSOK.COM/ STATICBLOG instant access to the artists spotlighted in every issue. Most importantly, “Sounds Like Oklahoma” is yet another important asset in our state’s ongoing battle to self-define its culture rather than let outsiders interpret who we are. Like the people who live here, our music is wide-ranging and diverse. Yes, the most successful or acclaimed artists from Oklahoma tend to shape perception of our state’s music, but what “Sounds Like Oklahoma” is not only Woody Guthrie or The Flaming Lips or Carrie Underwood. Our music comes in multitudes. We are noise rock. We are freak folk. We are hiphop. We are electronic. We are 10 different styles today that we weren’t yesterday. Oklahoma likes sounds, and sounds like Oklahoma.

Capitalize fall with DEERPEOPLE, BRONCHO

H

ello fellow Okie music lovers. Are you aware of the musical revolution taking place in our Great State at this very

moment? My name is Kerry Myers, and I have spent my post graduate years digging into the Okie music scene. It all started with a degree in Public Relations and a handful of friends in semi-successful bands. I started booking small events and shows, and the activity snowballed. I couldn’t stop. I haven’t stopped. I am addicted to Oklahoma bred melodies. In the future months I will be providing suggestions on what bands to see, where to watch, and a reason to support these musicians. I plan on leading you to all of the right places. » DEERPEOPLE with Jacob Abello and The Wurly Birds, Friday Sept. 28 at Opolis, 113 N. Crawford, Norman.

OK, missing this show would just be silly. Watching Stillwater-bred society DEERPEOPLE is completely fulfilling to all of your senses, often including beautiful theatrics with their shows.

KERRY MYERS All about music and the shows you should see, and shouldn’t see around Oklahoma.

» Plaza District Festival, noon to 10 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, free, all ages.

The quaint art district located off of NW 16th Street and Gatewood, this one-day long festival has an impressive lineup. Take a little bit of extra cash to splurge on some locally made goods from specialty shops like DNA Galleries and Collected Thread. Don’t miss Chelsey Cope, The Grown Ups, Porch Mice, Kyle Reid, Zach Zeller or Brother Gruesome. If you didn’t have plans Saturday, now you do. Download full schedule here.

Oklahoma native BRONCHO bring their modern-day punk rock sound to Kamps Lounge in Oklahoma City Oct. 5. Photo provided.

If you have never heard of Jacob Abello, here’s your chance. Recently returned to his home state of Oklahoma from Austin, Texas, he is a modern-day Freddie Mercury. This man has a voice that was made for singing competitions, but he’s better than that. His first album was released through Blackwatch Studios in Norman in 2009. “Nothing But Gold.” Everything Abello touches turns to gold. For more on Abello go here. » Chelsey Cope and Black Canyon, 10 p.m. Friday Sept. 28, Kamps Lounge, $7.

Why you should go? Cope released her debut EP, “A Deeper Root,” over the

summer and has had a handful of solo shows recently. This Friday she will be playing with her full band, including members of Defining Times and other talented Oklahoma musicians. Her low-key, nearly raspy and beautifully powerful love/hate ballads will turn you into an instant fan. Preview Cope’s EP here. Black Canyon can’t be classified anymore. Not in my mind, anyhow. Its sound has been evolving from gentle country ballads to punk rock anthems powered by an acoustic guitar. Frontman Jake Morisse provides deep powerful lyrics that are definitely danceable.

» BRONCHO, Skating Polly, Early Beat, Oct. 5, at Kamps Lounge, $10, 21+

Modern-day punk rockers BRONCHO will be visiting their home state for two shows; one at Kamps Lounge in Oklahoma City and one at Fassler Hall in Tulsa. BRONCHO projects a hi-fi sound with intelligent lyrics — songs like “Pick a Fight,” “Get off My Reservation,” and “Try Me Out Sometime” are the key ingredients for a perfect record. BRONCHO has been supported on NPR music, and supporting act, Skating Polly, comprised of stepsisters Kelli Mayo, age 12, and 17-year-old Peyton Bighorse, will be the perfect precursor. The girl power punk-rock duo released their first album in 2010 and they have a new album well under way. These ladies may be young, but far from immature. Let them teach you how to rock. More from BRONCHO here.

Learning to love this ‘Giant’

I

’ve been excited to hear “Love This Giant,” the much-anticipated collaboration between Talking Heads demigod David Byrne and indie provocateur St. Vincent (the Tulsa-born and Polyphonic Spree-raised Annie Clark) ever since that unsettling album art first brought my daily inbox inspection to a grinding halt. At first glance I feared the pair —clad in matching black formalwear — were announcing their intentions to join a farm of Amish or perhaps a joint candidacy for the office of a New York federal judgeship. But my snark quickly evaporated when I realized the protrusion on my reigning indie crush’s jawline, an outward symbol of the unsettling but catchy music that’s her calling card. Now the editor, Mr. Lang, has already written a fine review of “Love This Giant,” in which he noted that it “sounds exactly like its constituent parts, with neither party dominating and each working to complement the other’s undeniable strengths.” Some other things that are important to know about it: “Love This Giant” is backboned by quirky brass arrange-

ments (a suggestion of Clark’s that I suspect was mostly directed by Byrne) and often intrusive digital drum beats from John Congleton, who served as co-producer to Clark on her two most recent records, “Acto” and “Strange Mercy.” It lacks any kind of comprehensive theme and instead listens like 12 elaborately designed set pieces in a modest drama. But being that each collaborator has built such a distinct character and body of work, I’m going to use this week’s column to parse through each song and speculate who’s doing what. Why? Because it’s fun and I’m wondering who winds up as the most propulsive creative force in this collaboration between a hero and a crush. 1. “Who” The record starts off with its best song, and it’s a push! Byrne’s opening cry of “Who’s this! Inside of me?” is about as playful and jaunty as he’ll get here, briefly evoking the whooping joy of “Thank You For Sending Me an Angel” and other songs that made Talking Heads fun. But more importantly, the pair quickly establishes that they’re a good fit vocally and musically. Clark’s pitch is higher, and it amplifies the sense of suspicious reservation over Byrne’s scene at song’s end, where everybody is staring at each other around the dinner table. Also, her chunky Robert Frippian guitar playing intersperses the brass arrangement with an excellent psychedelic punch.

2. “Weekend in the Dust” “Where’s the fun in holding all the cards? Everyone gets up when you sit down,” is Clark singing what sounds like a typical Byrne outsider observation. Ultimately this one belongs to St. Vincent though, who swings from chanting over a funky beat and tuba line to beautifully singing the hook. 3. “Dinner for Two” Fear of domesticity being one of the recurring themes of Clark’s songwriting (check out the music video for “Cruel”) I doubt that this song about a couple never having time for a quiet dinner together was envisioned by her. Plus, the trouble of recalling the name of a “famous author” guest is probably something arty David Byrne experiences in real life. 4. “Ice Age” There’s no way this song’s anything but a leftover from “Strange Mercy” with some brass grafted onto it. Points awarded to Clark. 5. “I Am an Ape” Byrne, 100 percent. The weird declarations and carefully painted scenes are a dead giveaway. 6. “The Forest Awakes” Clark does the singing here but Byrne’s credited as co-songwriter in the liner notes with the poet Walt Whitman, who Naders his way into a push. 7. “I Should Watch TV” This one’s got a gargantuan beat and is sung by Byrne, with the lyrics: “Wanted to know what folks are

thinking/to understand the land I live in.” Lang pointed out in his review that it plays like a sequel to “Television Man” from “Little Creatures,” and I couldn’t agree more. Point Byrne. 8. “Lazarus” After the gigantic title-earning stomping of “I Should Watch TV,” “Lazarus” opens lush but morphs into something with cold, lofty aims. It’d fit snugly into the middle of “Fear of Music,” right between “Memories Can’t Wait” and “Air.” 9. “Optimist” This would be a fitting end to any of St. Vincent’s three records. It’s the most beautiful song here, and completely free of any of her signature underlying menace. It’s a refreshing break from her typical shtick. All Annie. 10. “Lightning” And just like that, she’s back to her old menacing ways. 11. “The One Who Broke Your Heart” This one’s a few dancers short of breaking into a conga line, easily a choice of the world-music-conscious Byrne. For more, check out “God’s Child,” from Byrne’s 1995 collaboration with Latin pop star Selena. 12. “Outside of Space and Time” Byrne sings this one about a big cosmic house. “More Songs About Buildings and Food,” much? Final tally: Byrne 6, Clark 4. Age triumphs over beauty.

Our shoe obsession changes with the seasons

I

n the words of the viral music video “Shoes” by comedian Liam Kyle Sullivan, “Let’s get some shoes!” It’s time to pack those flip-flops in storage and get out the boots, booties and closed-toe heels. Fall is here. For so many people, especially women, shoes are an obsession. It’s the Carrie Bradshaw effect. Many women will spend hundreds of dollars on the perfect shoe. Jimmy Choo, Manolo Blahnik and Valentino run our closets into an organized pile of footwear. Why are so many people obsessed? Cosmopolitan wondered the same thing and published the article “Why Women Love Shoes - Obsessed With Shoes,” which reached a few conclusions. One reason is that shopping is a mood booster in general, with the added benefit of being able to wear this accessory multiple times within a week. It also creates a feeling of power because “like most animals, we’re wired to associate height with power,” said Helen Fisher, PhD, professor of anthropology at Rutgers University. The third is a sexual reason. Apparently the same area that communicates with the private parts is right next to the feet, according to cosmopolitan.com. So yes, we are obsessed with shoes, but what shoes will we be obsessed with this season? Masculine styles are huge for the fall from Oxfords to military boots. Even the flat shoes have a masculine touch. In particular, Tuxedo flats are the craze. They come in all colors, fun patterns and price ranges. Target has some in snakeskin, leopard and plaid for $15.99.

Another hot trend for flats is the Oxford shoe. It’s a classic shoe you can find in every color imaginable. Pointed or round heels are in for fall, so take your choice. Make sure to stay out of the rain, because suede is in style for your wedges, boots and heels. Animal print is still big, especially snakeskin and make sure to include embellishments. Boots are made for walking in the fall, and it’s my favorite type of shoe to wear. This season, look for wedge boots in bootie, shoetie and boot form. And yes, booties are still in style. It’s the look women love and men love to hate. The “biker” look is also in, with any embellishment you can think to put on them, all the better from studs, buckles and spikes. In the same vein, you might be able to

dust off those old Doc Martens from the ’90s. Military boots are back! The lacier the better, and for me the most wearable boot trend is the riding boot. You can look like you belong on a horse without grabbing any reins. No matter what styles you choose for fall, it’s most important to be comfortable. Luckily, many of the styles on trend are not too high, strappy or bulky. Now, let’s get some shoes!

‘LOVE THIS GIANT’ – DAVID BYRNE AND ST. VINCENT

n its style and its substance, David Byrne and St. Vincent’s “Love This Giant” sounds exactly like its constituent parts, with neither party dominating and each working to complement the other’s undeniable strengths. True, Byrne and Tulsa-born Annie Clark are both oddball experimentalists who spike their avant-garde transgressions with just enough pop to make them go down smoothly, but they come from different corners of the art-pop world. Byrne is the visitor peering in on the pan-global traditions of rhythm, while St. Vincent is the Robert Fripp guitar disciple with a penchant for Grimm and noir. And yet, “Love This Giant” is seamless, a mind-melding of Byrne and Clark’s individual curiosities, as perfect a cross-pollination as Robert Plant and Alison Krauss’ “Raising Sand.” “Who” begins “Love This Giant” with

a flurry of brass, a big bundle of multicultural horn sounds that sticks around for most of the running time, whether it’s the complicated arpeggios of the Clark-led “The Forest Awakes” or the Afro-Cuban grooves supplied by the Dap Kings and Antibalas on the lovely “The One Who Broke Your Heart.” While “Who” is an even-split duet, most of “Love This Giant” has Clark and Byrne trading off on lead vocals while the other sings backup. Beyond her distinctively crystalline vocals, Clark is felt most in the chord progressions — she is never one to take the easy way through a song. Byrne is twice Clark’s age, and yet his voice is still as supple and idiosyncratic as it was during his tenure with Talking Heads. His fascinations with humanity’s quirks are little changed since those days. On “I Should Watch TV,” Byrne sings, “I used to think that I should watch TV, I used to think that it was good for me/ Wanted

to know what folks are thinking, to understand the land I live in.” It plays like a sequel to “Television Man” from “Little Creatures,” and in a sense, remote observation suits Byrne, then and now.

‘LOOK TO THE SKY’ – JAMES IHA

ormer Smashing Pumpkins guitarist James Iha may have been slow in coming up with a sophomore solo album, but “Look to the Sky” was worth the 14-year wait for those who appreciate his un-Pumpkin-like penchant for ‘60s-style folkpop and ‘70s-influenced soft rock. He hasn’t been idle since his 1998 solo debut “Let It Come Down” by any stretch, joining the ranks of metallic prog-rockers A Perfect Circle (featuring Tool vocalist Maynard James Keenan) in 2003, and forming the alt-pop supergroup Tinted Windows in 2009 with Tulsa’s Taylor Hanson (Hanson), Adam Schlesinger (Fountains of Wayne, Ivy) and Bun E. Carlos (Cheap Trick). The music on “Look to the Sky” continues in the easy-touch vein Iha

‘THE SOUND OF THE LIFE OF THE MIND’ – BEN FOLDS FIVE

early every song on “The Sound of the Life of the Mind,” the first album by Ben Folds Five in 13 years, illustrates the subtle but important differences between a Ben Folds solo album and what the pianist and songwriter does with his newly reunited partners, drummer Darren Jessee and bassist Robert Sledge. Classical concertos and the early work of Elton John figure heavily in Folds’ solo work, but with Sledge’s fuzz-bomb bass and Jessee’s spacious pop sensibilities on board, the songs flow on the power of Burt Bacharach-style chord changes and a different, more frenetic energy. His novelist’s eye for detail and indie comic’s vocabulary ensure that Folds is always the dominant personality, but “The Sound of the Life of the

Mind” would sound radically different without everyone on board. “The Life of the Mind” gets its punches in early and frequently, beginning with “Erase Me,” a nasty breakup song punctuated by Sledge and Jessee’s harmonies and Folds’ lacerating lyrics: “What was our home? Paper, not stone, a lean-to at most/And when you pulled your half away, gravity won.” The trio accelerates on “Michael Praytor, Five Years Later,” a hard-swinging pop track about a “frenemy” with a comet-like ability to regularly reappear, and then mellows with “Sky High,” featuring Jessee-penned lyrics and airy, 10cc-style background vocals. While the title track is a product of Folds’ recent collaboration with novelist Nick Hornby, the contribution of Jessee and Sledge gives the song an adrenaline surge that surpasses most of Hornby and Folds’ 2010

album, “Lonely Avenue.” After two more up-tempo songs, including the single “Do It Anyway” and “Draw a Crowd,” a hilarious track about a failed balladeer (“So smooth you can hear the beard”), “The Sound of the Life of the Mind” moves into softer territory, closing big with “Thank You for Breaking My Heart,” which begins with Folds solo, but

LOOKATOKC.COM

opens up when Sledge’s bass drops a few depth charges and choirboy harmonies swaddle Folds’ plaintive lead. It is a somber ending, but “Breaking My Heart” offers a statement both on the improved musicianship and important contributions of all three members of Ben Folds Five. — George Lang, LookatOKC

Clint Eastwood hits homer with ‘Trouble’

C

lint Eastwood steps back into the acting box for “Trouble With the Curve,” and connects for an out-of-the-park performance as an aging baseball scout who’s fighting to stay in the game. This in spite of the fact that he’s working with rookies — first-time screenwriter Randy Brown and longtime producing partner Robert Lorenz in his directorial debut — who throw easy and predictable narrative pitches to their players in a conventional and sometimes mawkish sports yarn with a troubled father-daughter relationship at its center. Fortunately, these players are heavy hitters who seldom foul the ball. Eastwood layers his temperamental Gus Lobel with just the right amount of crustiness, while three-time Oscar nominee Amy Adams (“The Fighter,” “Doubt,” “Junebug”) brings equal heat as Gus’ adult daughter Mickey, an up-and-coming lawyer who’s every bit as feisty and stubborn as her father and constantly at odds with him. It seems Gus struck out as a single parent after the long-ago death of his wife, leaving Mickey to be raised

by relatives she hardly knew. The two have never been close, and on the rare occasion when a breakthrough feels imminent, it seems Gus’ attention is always diverted by the one thing Mickey believes to be most important to him: his job. After all, she is named after his favorite baseball player, Mickey Mantle. But Gus is now entering his twilight years, and the veteran Atlanta Braves scout is starting to lose a vital tool of his trade — his eyesight. He’s doing his best to hide his failing vision, but the front office is beginning to doubt his judgment thanks to an ambitious young numbers-cruncher in the organization (Matthew Lillard) who wants to edge out geezers like Gus in favor of computerized scouting. Gus still believes that observing a potential player’s character, watching how he moves, and listening to the crack of his bat speaks volumes. With one of the country’s hottest batting wonders, blowhard Bo Gentry (newcomer Joe Massingill) up for the draft, scouting chief Pete Klein (John Goodman), who still has faith in Gus, persuades Mickey to tag along with her dad on his latest scouting trip and be his eyes. She reluctantly agrees, risking her own

career to save her father’s, and Gus has no choice in the matter. Along the way they encounter Johnny Flanagan (an engaging Justin Timberlake), a once-gifted pitcher discovered by Gus, who is now trying his hand at scouting after prematurely blowing out his arm. He’s immediately attracted to Mickey, but she, like her father, has problems letting anyone get close to her. As Johnny wears down her defenses, he also tackles the difficult role of peacemaker between Mickey and her father. In the bottom of the ninth, it all comes down to whether Gus can convince his bosses, despite the numbers, that boy-wonder Bo has trouble with curve balls that could prove disastrous in a moment of truth. But more importantly it comes down to dealing with life’s curve balls, and placing family and emotional fulfillment above everything else. This team, led by old pro Eastwood, brings all of that home for an easy win. If you’re a sucker for a feelgood baseball movie, this one won’t disappoint.

Gorgeous film ‘Master’ is no cult expose

V

iewers hoping for a juicy expose of the super-secretive Church of Scientology in “The Master” might want to adjust their expectations just a tad. Writer-director Paul Thomas Anderson has acknowledged that the cult leader of the film’s title — played with great bluster and bravado by Philip Seymour Hoffman, one of his longtime players — was inspired by Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard. And certain key phrases and ideas that are tenets of the church do show up in the film. There’s the notion that everything that shapes us is recorded from our earliest days and that people can dig deep into their pasts — into past lives, even — to purge negative experiences and emotions and achieve a state of perfection. “The Master” takes place in 1950 as Hoffman’s character, the charismatic Lancaster Dodd, is releasing an important new book outlining his bold <<<

philosophy; that’s the same year Hubbard published his worldwide best-seller, “Dianetics.” And Amy Adams, as Dodd’s true-believer wife, Peggy, makes this quietly forceful proclamation toward the end: “This is something you do for a billion years or not at all.” It’s a number that couldn’t possibly be random, given the billion-year contract the most devoted Scientologists sign. And yet, the church — or rather, “The Cause,” as it’s known here — emerges relatively unscathed. Dodd, whom his followers refer to as “Master,” is commanding and calculating and sometimes even cruel, but the bond he forges with a wayward Joaquin Phoenix reveals his inquisitiveness, his generosity of spirit and a love that can’t be defined. Meanwhile, Phoenix’s character, the troubled, volatile and often inebriated Freddie Quell, seems at his happiest once he’s safely ensconced within Dodd’s group. But “The Master” isn’t interested in anything so

clear-cut as joy vs. misery. It’s about the way people’s lives intersect. Anderson, long a master himself of technique and tone, has created a startling, stunningly gorgeous film. But it’s also his most ambitious film yet — quite a feat following the sprawling “Magnolia” and the operatic “There Will Be Blood” — in that it’s more impressionistic and less adherent to a tidy three-act structure. If you like answers, you will feel frustrated. And yet, as fond of ambiguity as I usually am, I still felt a bit emotionally detached afterward. Wowed, for sure, but not exactly moved. Adams has the least-showy part among the three leads but in some ways, she might just give the most impressive performance of all. Slowly, steadily, she reveals Peggy as the true brains and muscle of the operation. It’s frightening, and it demonstrates yet another facet of Adams’ great versatility. — Christy Lemire, The Associated Press

‘FOR A GOOD TIME, CALL ...’

Rating: R (Language) Running time: 1 hour, 26 minutes Starring: Lauren Miller, Ari Graynor, Seth Rogen, Justin Long, Mimi Rogers, Ari Graynor, Nia Vardalos.

stars

Phone sex comedy offers only small talk

E

ven when it is enthusiastically diving into hilarious filth, director Jamie Travis’ female-relationship comedy “For a Good Time, Call ...” feels like its nastiness is grafted on, that underneath all of its outer trappings of post“Bridesmaids” brazenness, this could be a “Felicity” episode. Well, only if Felicity were running a phone-sex line. During college, Lauren (co-screenwriter Lauren Miller) was a demure earth child whose run-in with campus wild child Katie (Ari Graynor, “Celeste and Jesse Forever”) is forever burned on her brain. A decade later, Lauren experiences a terrible breakup with slick and bland Charlie (James Wolk) and needs an apartment — fast. Thanks to longtime buddy Jesse (Justin Long), she finds out about a posh Gramercy Park brownstone, which is great, except it comes with the roommate of Lauren’s nightmares.

Katie is loud in most ways, but in her moonlighting job as a phone-sex operator, she is loud and paid for the privilege. Lauren’s attempts to secure a job at a publishing house run by blase editor Rachel (played in a cameo performance by Nia Vardalos) prove unsuccessful, and soon Lauren is lured into the business of making pleasurable sounds for fun and profit. The idea of a phone-sex comedy feels like a mid1990s concept, slightly quaint in view of the bold and nasty outer frontiers of streaming video, Chatroulette and everything else that can give its cyber-users unwanted viruses. But this antiquated setup fits “For a Good Time, Call ...,” because at its heart, this is a comedy about how female friendships are made and maintained. Fall down the icky rabbit hole of more modern hookups, and the comedy would lose the charming innocence that thrives under the veneer of in-your-face sex talk. Most of the laughs come from the cameos, including

Miller’s significant other, Seth Rogen, as a preoccupied airline pilot. As for the rest, “For a Good Time, Call ...” bides its time with off-the-rack jokes about Lauren hiding her new career from her parents (Mimi Rogers and Don McManus) and dithering over whether to forge onward with a publishing job or continue to talk dirty to men (and women). One memorable minor character, baby-voiced operator Krissy (Sugar Lyn Beard), gets an awkward exit when Miller and script collaborator Katie Ann Naylon stretch the jokes about her high-pitched lasciviousness to the straining point. “For a Good Time, Call ...” has no great ambitions and runs on the chemistry between the comparatively modest Miller and the ultra-brassy Graynor. And like its subject matter, this comedy finishes quickly, with few surprises and a predictable ending. It is a comedy with an easy allure but not enough substance to warrant a deeper relationship.

At the beginning of “Borderlands 2” (2K Games, for the Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC, $59.99), you’ve been left for dead on this godforsaken planet. Fortunately, Claptrap, the chatty robot from the original “Borderlands,” comes to your rescue and nurses you back into fighting trim. The bad news: You cannot escape. The good news: There are so many guns lying around Pandora you can dish out way more pain than you can take. You play as one of four “vault hunters.” Salvador, the “gunzerker,” can wield two firearms at once, while Axton, the commando, can deploy turrets. Maya, the siren, has psychic powers, and Zero, the assassin, can become invisible and blindside the enemy. They’re all fighting against the charismatic sociopath Handsome Jack, who wants to claim all the riches of Pandora for his Hyperion Corp. No matter which hero you choose, you’ll be able to wield any of the weapons in “Borderlands 2,” from pistols and sniper rifles to machine guns and bazookas. And you won’t just be filling your foes with lead: Certain guns will electrocute them, or set them on fire, or coat them with

corrosive goo. The diverse character lineup and the seemingly infinite arsenal allow you to play each mission in your own style. If you’re a run-and-gun type, arming Salvador with a couple of SMGs will get the job done. I prefer a more cautious approach, so I played as Zero, sniping from a distance and turning invisible when the action got too hairy. You can also join forces online with up to three other humans, combining all four vault hunters’ attacks in spectacular bursts of mayhem. The war against Handsome Jack gives “Borderlands 2” a spine the original sorely lacked. It’s hardly an original plot, but developer Gearbox Software has laced it with so much morbid humor that it feels completely fresh. From Claptrap’s frantic gibberish to Handsome Jack’s sneering putdowns, the dialogue is consistently hilarious. Indeed, the writing in “Borderlands 2” is so strong, particularly for its genre, that it took me by surprise. An awkward romance between two familiar faces comes off as endearing rather than sappy. A hyperactive girl named Tiny Tina — “the world’s most dangerous 13-year-old” — turns sympathetic while you’re helping her arrange a tea party. Even Handsome Jack isn’t quite the stock villain he first appears. 2K is advertising “Borderlands 2” as “a new era of shoot and loot,” and that’s the core of its gameplay. You fire off all your ammo, scavenge loot from the corpses and use it to buy deadlier weapons. It’s an insidiously addictive cycle, but Gearbox wasn’t content to let the series stand on that alone. With an expansive world, memorable characters and clever mission design, “Borderlands 2” elevates its franchise into one of the premium attractions in the video-game universe. ‘THE L AS T S TORY’

Wii goes out quietly with ‘Last Story’

T

he Wii created a bona fide frenzy when it was launched six years ago. Now, most Wiis are gathering dust on back shelves, if they haven’t been unplugged and thrown away. As Nintendo gears up for the holiday release of the Wii’s successor, the Wii U, new games for the old system have been nearly nonexistent. “The Last Story” (Xseed, $49.99) couldn’t have a more appropriate title because it does indeed appear to be the Wii’s last gasp. It’s an ambitious adventure that struggles constantly against the limitations of the underpowered console. And it’s quite a letdown, considering the track record of its creator. Hironobu Sakaguchi, the director of “The Last Story,” is best known as the creator of the landmark “Final Fantasy” series. He’s also the author of one of the finest role-playing games of the current generation, the Xbox 360 epic “Lost Odyssey.” I’m a huge fan, but I found his latest journey more exhausting than exciting. The protagonist is a young mercenary named Zael who dreams of becoming a knight. While visiting his empire capital, Lazulis City, he shares a romantic evening with a melancholy beauty named Lisa. If you’ve ever played a Japanese RPG, you won’t be surprised by the revelation that Lisa is really Calista, heiress to the throne. She’s betrothed to a creepy popinjay, and her brilliant uncle Count Arganan seems less than trustworthy, so it’s up to the kid to prove he’s a worthy suitor. Zael gets his chance when he and

his merc buddies find themselves on a mission to infiltrate the command base of the Gurak, a monstrous race bent on the destruction of Lazulis. But who’s the real monster: enemy Gen. Zangurak or the calculating Arganan? I haven’t spoiled anything here, because anyone familiar with the genre will see the plot twists coming hours before they actually emerge. Zael himself is a hoary RPG trope: the chosen one, granted supernatural powers by “the Outsider” and destined to become the savior of the planet. And with the exception of a few uninspired side-quests, the tale is relentlessly linear, eschewing the free-roaming exploration of Western RPGs like “Skyrim.” As hackneyed as the plot is, though, Sakaguchi and the team at his Mistwalker studio do make a noble effort to freshen up the gameplay. The frequent, random battles of the “Final Fantasy” franchise are replaced by defined scenarios at prescribed locations. As your party approaches, you get an overhead view so you can scope out the competition and plot out a strategy. Unfortunately, your companions usually don’t listen to a word you say, so the fights devolve into freefor-alls. Near the end of “The Last Story” you gain the power to pause the action and issue commands (as in “Mass Effect”), but your choices are limited. Despite the lack of control, most of the skirmishes are easy to win — although I often found myself triumphant without knowing why. Graphically, “The Last Story” barely matches the quality of Sakaguchi’s late-1990s PlayStation games. There are occasional glimpses of beauty in the non-interactive cut scenes, but much of the game is marred by muddy environments, blurry textures and clunky character animation. Sakaguchi fans fought to get “The Last Story” released in the U.S., but it’s a lackluster effort from the master. Let’s hope it isn’t really his last story. Two stars out of four. WASHED OUT, PERFORMS A FREE SHOW OF MELODIC LAPTOP POP ON OCT. 5 AT OPOLIS IN NORMAN.

echnology, style shifts and the demands of live performance set off a quick evolution process for Washed Out, the laptop-based music project started just three years ago by Ernest Greene in his Perry, Ga. bedroom. What was once created on a MacBook is now fleshed out by a full band, and Greene, flush from the success of 2011’s atmospheric alt-pop album “Within and Without,” now hears and plays his songs with a fresh energy. “I use a lot of layers on the record, especially with the vocals,” Greene said in a recent phone interview. “There’s a song on the new record called ‘Far Away,’ and on the record it has cello parts and a really stripped down sound, but we were having a hard time with the instrumentation we tour with. So we wound up just transforming it almost into a completely different song — there’s a lot more synth parts. “So we hope people have open minds about that,” said Greene, who is joined by his wife, Blair, on keyboards. “I know some fans like to come out to shows and hear what they love about the record. There’s certainly some songs that do sound exactly like the record, but on others we’ve rearranged things a bit.” But for Washed Out, which will perform a free show at Opolis on Oct. 5, the music was never limited by STORY CONTINUES ON PG. 22

CONTINUED FROM PG. 21 stylistic parameters and first gained notice because of its core melodies and do-it-yourself ethos. While earning a Master of Library and Information Sciences degree at the University of South Carolina, Greene became friends with Chaz Bundick, an undergrad who shared an enthusiasm for ambient pop created through multilayered laptop recording. Separately but on parallel courses, Bundick’s Toro Y Moi and Greene’s Washed Out became key exponents of a style commonly known as “chillwave.” Both performers released their first recordings as limitededition cassettes in 2009 and found recording deals soon afterward, and Greene’s “Life of Leisure” and Bundick’s “Causers of This” received positive reviews from influential online publications such as Pitchfork and Consequence of Sound. Then, in completely independent moves, both Washed Out and Toro Y Moi made sonic leaps with their respective 2011 breakout albums, “Within and Without” and “Underneath the Pine.” “When we first met, we listened to a lot of the same music and had both played in rock bands,” Greene said. “We’d both started recording by ourselves and used a lot of the same equipment. But it was a strange kind of coincidence. There was hardly ever any kind of technical conversations happening. We just had similar tastes.” While Greene took piano lessons as a child and later gravitated to guitar, he said his greatest influence was DJ Shadow, the Bay Area sampling artist whose 1996 album, “Endtroducing...” is frequently credited with broadening the stylistic palette of collage-based recordings. “That was a really big turning point for me,” Greene said. “I discovered that (“Endtroducing...”) around the time I started making music on my own on the computer. My dad had a pretty decent collection of jazz recordings and instrumental music from the ‘70s, and I was into that kind of stuff but I had never heard that kind of music STORY CONTINUES ON PG. 24 <<<

CONTINUED FROM PG. 22 recontextualized in a modern way like the Shadow record. “For the longest time, I was trying to be DJ Shadow, I think. But I slowly developed my own style,” he said. “It was trial and error, for sure.” Signing to Sub Pop in early 2011, Greene worked on “Within and Without” with producer Ben Allen, who mixed Animal Collective’s “Merriweather Post Pavilion.” While “Life of Leisure” was constructed using the DJ Shadow template — almost completely from sampling — Washed Out’s higher profile prompted Greene to create more of his own sounds rather than warping and transforming samples. “So that was different,” he said. “The other thing was, it was

the first time I had mixed in a real studio.” Having recently contributed a cover of the 1982 Fleetwood Mac song “Straight Back” to the tribute album “Just Tell Me That You Want Me,” Greene is currently working on new Washed Out material for release next year. He said that his touring experience with guitar, bass, drum and synthesizer could impact the sound of the next album. “I do have the personnel that we use in the back of my head when I’m working, but I also don’t want to limit myself,” he said. “I know of some guitar-based rock bands that refuse to record anything that they can’t play live. But some of the best stuff I come up with are studio-based performances — bringing out whatever accident I had in the studio and building a song around that.”

Sandals have had their time in the sun. Cooler weather and shorter days signal a return to more substantial shoes, and fall styles are so tempting that your toes will be eager to slip into a pair.

Smoking slippers, lace-up oxfords, pointed-toe pumps and boots, tall and short, are grounded with ankle straps, bows, metal accents, rich colors, glitter, menswear influences and texture. “Footwear can instantly update your wardrobe and help transition your look from season to season,” said Melissa Merriman, regional communications director for Dillard’s. One of the most popular styles continues to be the smoking or tuxedo slipper. It’s a welcome alternative to the ballet slipper and just as versatile. The style looks good with pants and skirts. Slip into a pair of brocades and a satin skirt for a special evening out or just wear them with jeans and a jacket. Smoking slippers are available in a broad range of colors and patterns from burgundy velvet to calf hair animal print. Tassels, wing tips and patterns such as herringbone give a subtle nod to menswear, another strong look for fall.

“This season, there is also a masculine meets feminine vibe in footwear, from allover stud embellished platforms to more modest flats with a hint of metal,” Merriman said. “This fall-friendly style can be edgy and polished all at the same time.” That masculine touch is echoed on lace-up oxfords, in flat as well as heeled styles. To really step out in style, consider a pair dressed up in glitter or metallic. Like smoking slippers, oxfords are an easy way to transition from summer to fall.

While menswear is a recurring theme in footwear this fall, it’s strong in fashion as well. One way to soften the look of a man-tailored suit is with a pump. Upscale shoe brands are bringing back the classic pointed-toe pump, but plenty of other styles still get a boost from platforms and round toes. Ankle straps and bows give stilettos and more manageable heels a feminine touch, while a sprinkle of studs brings edge and attitude to the ladylike silhouette.

BOOTIES

Boots, of course, are the quintessential footwear when there’s a chill in the air. Styles range from equestrian to motorcycles to booties with stacked heels, wedges and platforms. “Booties make the mark again this season and look great in both bold and classic shades,” Merriman said. “What’s great about booties is that they can be paired with skinny bottoms or tights by day and-or with something fun and leg-baring by night.” A different take on the look is the clog bootie. “Clogs are experiencing a serious fashion rebirth, and Swedish Hasbeens top the list,” said Leigh Standerfer, owner of Heirloom Shoe. “It doesn’t hurt that they are a cult favorite among the Hollywood elite. See Sarah Jessica Parker for proof. This ‘50s-inspired rock ‘n’ roll wooden bootie is easy to slip into and looks great at the same time. Pair it with jeans and a sweater or dress it up with leggings and a dress.” Standerfer said texture also adds a lot of interest this season with shoes in lush velvet, calf hair, textured metallic and details such as fur pom-poms, capped toes and studded bows.

ong Rucker might well be the most forgiving mother in the Oklahoma City metro area. That’s because she holds no ill will toward her five adoring daughters for cajoling her into opening a restaurant without previous experience. Yong’s Jeon Ju, 217 S Sooner Road, opened in December 2009 and has developed a reputation for authentic South Korean cuisine surrounded by walls turned to art by an internationally renowned artist. Sune Hawkins is one of the daughters responsible for luring Yong into the notoriously difficult and all-consuming hospitality industry. Perhaps in penance, Sune recently returned to Jeon Ju to help her mother out. Sune says her sisters had noble motives. “We wanted to share the food we love with everyone,” she said. “We love our mother, and we love her food. We just wanted people to experience it.” The results of Yong’s toil are a pleasure to those of us lucky enough to find her little eatery near the corner of Sooner Road and Reno Avenue. “Our food isn’t Americanized,” Sune said. “It’s the food we grew up with. It’s food my mother grew up with in Korea.” Jeon Ju is named for the South Korean city of Jeonju, where Yong grew up and lived when she was whisked away by an American named James Rucker in 1970. AVENUE, OKC

Earlier this year, the city of Jeonju won recognition for its culinary contributions. UNESCO’S Creative Cities Network named Jeonju a Creative City for Gastronomy, recognizing the city’s traditional home cooking handed down through generations, its active public and private food research, a system of nurturing talented chefs, and its hosting of distinctive local food festivals. Sune said it’s also a city noted for its Bibimbap, a bowl of beautiful ingredients awaiting the diner’s influence. The word literally means “mixed rice.” Bibimbap is a bowl of warm white rice topped with sauteed and seasoned vegetables and the lethal chile paste, gochujang. Topped with a fried egg and sliced meat of your choice, the ingredients are stirred together right before you eat it. Jeon Ju also serves Dolsot Bibimbap, which arrives in a sizzling stone bowl. Sizzling platters of fajitas have nothing on this presentation as a fresh egg just finishes cooking upon arrival. You’ll find a variety of vegetables in the dish, including daikon, mushrooms, doraji (bellflower root) and fresh bean sprouts. It takes about a sniff to fall in love with this dish, and once you start eating it, a new world opens up. As the rice on the bottom continues to sizzle in sesame oil, the dish evolves as you eat it. Jeon Ju also serves bulgogi in three varieties: beef, pork and chicken. Meat-eaters will rejoice over this platter of boldly flavored sizzling meat and onions served with steamed rice. No meal at Jeon Ju can be consumed without at least one of Yong’s homemade pancakes. The traditional name is Pajeon, and Sune said they are omnipresent at the Korean table. Yong’s Pajeon is served like a small pizza, cut into triangles. One bite, and you’ll find yourself unable to share. The pancake is derived from a batter of eggs, wheat flour, rice flour, green onions, and secrets Yong is not about to share. The most prominent ingredient is fresh jalapeno slices placed so each

triangle is adorned with one. The Pajeon is crunchy on the outside, soft on the inside and packs enough heat to warm the chilly heart of chef John Bennett, who has been known to dream of these flavor havens. Yong advised the Pajeon is to be eaten with a special soy sauce solution she mixes herself. A little vinegar and sugar turns the soy sauce into a balanced and inviting condiment. Speaking of condiments, the first dishes you receive at Jeon Ju are called banchan. They will arrive before you order. Seven small bowls containing various fermented and marinated chilled vegetables await your fancy. Kimchee, the condiment that is to Korea what salsa is to Mexico, is the heart of banchan and all Korean food. The national dish of Korea, kimchee is a combination of ingredients such as Napa cabbage, daikon radish, dried salted shrimp, ginger, garlic, red chili powder and green onions

fermented in fish sauce and brine. The flavor is big. It is not for the meek or fragile, kissing whatever it touches with fury and flame. Other condiments include what’s generally referred to as Namul, which is virtually any vegetable or combination of vegetables lightly pickled or seasoned in the manner of kimchee. At Jeon Ju, the Namul includes Do Chua, the Vietnamese combination of julienned carrots and daikon mildly pickled. Also in the circle of flavor is Dongchmi, also called water kimchee, a briny broth in which daikon floats with a little scallion, carrot and cabbage — the broth is intended to be spooned out, leaving the vegetables. Kkakdugi is a variation of kimchee consisting of kimchee-seasoned daikon cubes. Kongnamul is boiled bean sprouts, drained and seasoned lightly with sesame oil, soy sauce, chopped green onions, sesame seeds and a hint of garlic. Also included were chilled marinated potatoes and a lightly pickled carrot and broccoli combination. Banchan is to be eaten at the pleasure of the diner,

Jeon Ju is open from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Saturday at 217 S Sooner Road in Midwest City. Prices don’t reach far beyond $10, and family-style dining is a given. For more information, call 672-4644.

whether mixed with bulgogi and rice, dropped into bibimbap or added to a kimchee hot dog. It can also be added to Kimchi Soon Tofu, also known as Soon Dubu Kimchi, a soft tofu soup served with or without meat and plenty of gochujang chili sauce. For those who like to sweat when they eat, this is your weapon of mass perspiration. It’s served with steamed rice, which offers fleeting respite from the incendiary nature of this addictive soup. Yong also makes a handy dish called Kimbap, which will look a lot like a sushi pocket. ORIGINAL WORK OF ART While the food at Jeon Ju will demand your attention, the explosion of color that adorns the walls will guarantee no lull in conversation. Yong’s daughter Cindy lives in New York with her husband, noted German-born artist Markus Linnenbrink, who is known for his work with brightly colored streaks and drips, including a line of Swatch-brand watches. In August 2011, Linnenbrink turned the walls inside Jeon Ju into a site-specific work of art called “SUDDENLYEVERYTHINGMINDGOESONHOLIDAY.” Linnenbrink’s works are on permanent display at places such as San Francisco’s Museum of Modern Art, the Herzliya Museum of Art in Israel, The Hammer Museum at the University of California in Los Angeles and the Neue Galerie of Kassel, Hesse, in Germany.
