For some, the changing of the seasons is a time to refl ect on the long, carefree days of summer, when you could kick back and dress down, not worrying about styling your hair and getting your makeup on point.

For others, the approach of autumn is exciting because it means a change of wardrobe and fi nally getting to try out a hot new beauty style. There are a number of trends to try, but the one that’s causing a huge stir on TikTok is ‘soap brows.’ What are they and how do you do them Craig, I hear you ask in breathy anticipation?

Well, the concept is exactly as the name suggests: Instead of using a brow gel, you use a bar of soap to shape and set your brows in place. This hack is currently being raved about by beauty bloggers but it's been around for years, as a staple technique used by professional makeup artists and drag queens. Of course, the caveat before attempting to reap the benefi ts of softly styled brows that wow, is to remember that doing a spin class, going for a run or walking the dog in the rain might will almost certainly have consequences. Beforehand, don’t forget to do a patch test, as an allergic reaction is not the look you want.

How it works

FIRST, USE A QUALITY SOAP that contains an emollient ingredient. I’d recommend either a Dove Beauty Bar, Neutrogena’s original facial cleansing tablet or the classic transparent Pears gentle soap. NEXT, USING A MAKEUP BRUSH with a spoolie at one end, spray the spiral bristles with a facial mist to moisten them. NOW RUB THE SPOOLIE along the soap to create a soft, gel-like substance that coats the bristles and then comb it through the hairs if your eyebrows, shaping them as you go along. The soap won’t dry too quickly, so you have plenty of time to create the arch you’re most happy with. A BROW PENCIL CAN HELP YOU to fi ll in any sparse areas and be careful to apply foundation around your brows before combing them. The mantra to remember is that eye makeup and facial products mixed with soap equals ‘fl ake, cake and separate.’
