Probably the biggest mistake many people make when dealing with estates, or even their own surplus items, is to rush to the local jewellers with the gold, silver, coins and watches.

In reality, few jewellers these days carry much stock of old and secondhand items because the demand isn’t big enough to justify the investment, so when they price up for buying, they don’t think of long-term re-sale of the items just a quick profi t from melting them down. That means they tend to ignore any precious stones, any antique or intrinsic value and even dismiss the diamonds many pieces are set with.

They will usually add the justifi cation that nobody wants “that type of thing anymore”. Whilst they may be correct locally there are many buyers out there who want old and antique jewellery and watches of any style and certainly lots of them abroad, where fashion trends are very diff erent.
