With a doctorate in counseling, Ellen Roberts implemented Social Emotional

Lessons at Evans Elementary School in Oviedo last year with the encouragement of School Principal Carol Darnell. Four days a week she visits classrooms among four different grades, helping students identify emotions and teaching them self-regulation and coping techniques. Each lesson is tailored to the students’ needs or issues, and she provides individual guidance to students who need it.

Her very important and relevant role and reasons behind wanting a makeover immediately impressed and secured her as this year’s makeover recipient. In her own words: “I am a school counselor responsible for teaching Social Emotional Lessons to an entire elementary school of 974 students! I love what I do, but I am afraid I am looking a bit tired, worn and worn-out! I have to be on top of my game at all times and in all situations. I know that if I look my best, I will feel my best, allowing me to address the many issues and questions these young students have. They look to me for answers, so I would like to ‘look’ like they can trust my answers and advice.”

Ellen’s makeover began with a visit by image consultant Lisa Maile to analyze and video her closet, which included “the five looks I wear to school, then repeat each week,” according to Ellen. Lisa found full skirts that add width and not-so-flattering shapes and colors. Ellen’s desired look was professional, yet approachable and engaging for young students, instead of her self-described “worn and worn-out.” Lisa suggested a wardrobe plan with narrow shapes in bright colors and black/white contrast to add height and grant presence, which Ellen loved. Lines close to the body offered a more appealing proportion and an immediate “tall-and-thin” look.

The second day’s shopping spree at The Mall at Millenia with Ellen’s plan was fast and effortless, as

Macy’s INC turquoise jacket and Lee trousers; White House Black Market sequin cami

Kasper cobalt jacket, Alfani petal skirt, JM Collection shell, all from Macy’s; Icing pearls

Lisa helped Ellen select 28 mix-and-match items (including designer pieces) in her chosen core colors, creating abundant options with her $500 gift card.

The third and final day of the makeover kicked off at Porte Noir Salon as hair stylist Ana Yebba gave Ellen her first-ever shoulder-length cut, as our winner confessed, “I’ve worn my hair the same way forever — at least 25 years!” Ana cut off 10 inches of her fine hair and added light blonde highlights and golden blonde lowlights for a natural, warm depth. Framing Ellen’s face with layers to showcase her strong features and pretty bone structure, Ana styled her new look with a blow dryer and large, round brush, using blow-out

cream to tame frizz.

Then it was off to Studio CARA for a makeup application with CARA Cosmetics founder Leslie Christin, who created Ellen’s personalized professional look with a neutral palette to complement her new wardrobe. Her beautiful green eyes were the focus with a smoldering liner, lash thickener and mascara, and modern brow design. For a flawless face, Leslie applied concealer, medium satin-based foundation and hi-definition powder; then completed the look with lipliner, lipstick, contour and blush. Ellen received her personalized makeup look ($350 value) compliments of Studio CARA, along with the personalized custom eyeshadow and blush palette

to continue her daily look ($135 value).

After hair and makeup, Ellen enjoyed a photo shoot with award-winning photographer Sharon Lundberg, wearing a few of her many new Back-to-Class looks from The Mall at Millenia. She was thrilled to receive a carload of school supplies courtesy of 90.7 WMFE. With its strong commitment to educators, the station is in its third year of the ContinuED School Supply Drive. Find out more at wmfe.org/supplydrive.

Of her experience and final look, Ellen shares: “I am so excited! I am grateful for everyone who had a hand in this. I’m excited to go back to school and see what the students think!”
