Contemporary sculptor Peter Shire’s installation of illuminated birdhouses are perched near the Frank Gehry-designed Anaheim ICE practice rink for the NHL’s Anaheim Ducks. New merchants, one-of-a-kind boutiques, Good Food Hall, outdoor cafes and chef-driven concept restaurants that have reclaimed and restored historic buildings on this two-block stretch between Harbor and Anaheim Boulevards. Modern residential lofts and retail stores share a five-story building with the MUZEO museum and cultural center, which houses its Main Gallery around the corner in the 1908 Carnegie Library.

The Anaheim Packing House, formerly a 1920s-era citrus-packing facility, is now a trendy, two-level food hall with more than 20 artisanal eateries surrounding communal dining areas. Across the city, businesses are opening their doors to welcome residents and visitors.

Disney has committed to investing $1 billion in its resort located in the Anaheim Resort district. In 2016, Disney began construction on a “Star Wars”-themed land. Though a completion date has not been announced, several Tomorrowland attractions in Disneyland® Park, including Star Tours and Star Wars Launch Bay, reflect “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” updates, and Space Mountain is reimagined as Hyperspace Mountain for a limited time. And if your young Padawans feel strong with the Force, test their Lightsaber skills in a new immersive show at Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple. They will face Darth Vader along with the Seventh Sister-a new villain from the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels.

FOR OVERNIGHT GUESTS Great Wolf Lodge Southern California, LEFT, has come to the Anaheim Resort, opening a family-friendly, wilderness-themed property in Garden Grove in 2016. The hotel includes a massive indoor waterpark, activity centers and a kid-friendly beauty salon. Great Wolf Lodge is part of the recent hotel development boom in the Anaheim Resort district, which now offers more than 22,000 rooms. Mayor TOM TAIT has championed the growth of the beer community since he was elected in 2010, introducing a number of initiatives that cut red tape and make it easier to open a small business in the city—greatly bolstering the industry’s growth. “We are enhancing freedoms so businesses can succeed, and an industry like craft breweries brings people together,” Tait explains. “The breweries have done a great job in forming a community. … The culture is here, and it’s growing. Anaheim is already OC’s largest beer city, but Tait assures visitors and residents that there is more to come. “We are processing craft brew permits and business license applications,” he adds. “… We have our own water utility, which makes prices competitive. And, our brewers tell me that the mineral composition of our water is ideally suited for making beer.” For those eager to indulge, Tait suggests, “Take your time to research the breweries, find what you like, and enjoy.” As for the mayor’s top choice? “That would be like asking who is my favorite child! Each is unique and brings something special to the table—no favorites.”

Anaheim legend states that the main road near the Anaheim Resort district owes its name to two of the town’s early settlers. When seeking a moniker for their ranch, John and Margaret Rea combined their daughters’ names, Kate and Ella, into Katella. The name caught on, and the sisters are memorialized in side-by-side statues at Anaheim GardenWalk.

Some lifelong city residents can remember when buildings were deconstructed in the 1970s and 1980s to bring the city up to modern safety code. As a memento, Buster Simpson’s benches on the corner of Center Street Promenade and South Clementine Street incorporate remnants of Anaheim’s past.

Interstate 5, which runs directly through Anaheim, takes drivers north to Los Angeles and south to San Diego.
