ALL ABOUT ANAHEIM

Gaze farther south on Anaheim Boulevard and spot the Anaheim Packing District. The Anaheim Packing House, formerly a 1920s-era citrus-packing facility, is now a trendy, two-level food hall with more than 20 artisanal eateries surrounding communal dining areas. The 1925 Packard Building, once home to its namesake motor-car dealership, has been reborn with Umami Burger and the Anaheim Brewery. By night, downtown Anaheim hosts a thriving nightlife. By day, during its seasonal art shows and street fairs, Center Street Promenade transforms into an open-air gallery. On exhibit are not only the vibrant local art scene but also the transformation of Orange County’s most populous city. From its past, Anaheim creates its presence.

venues now hails the architecturally spectacular ARTIC, the Anaheim Regional Transportation Intermodal Center that opened in 2014 as Southern California’s transit hub. Anaheim’s location is central in Orange County, just 13 miles from the beaches and Orange County’s 42-mile stretch of scenic Pacific Ocean coastline and charming seaside cities such as Laguna Beach, Newport Beach and Huntington Beach (Surf City USA). With Los Angeles to our north and San Diego to our south, Anaheim is close to every attraction you might want to explore on your Southern California adventure.

EXPERIENCE ANAHEIM A RECORD 22.5 MILLION PEOPLE VISITED Anaheim in 2015, setting a mark for the third consecutive year. Hotel, restaurant and retail development has been booming, largely in the Anaheim Resort district, to continue to surprise and delight visitors with something new, distinctive and even unexpected in this dynamic destination. The Anaheim Convention Center, the West Coast’s largest venue for conferences, trade shows and mega events, is expanding to offer more than 1 million square feet of flexible, multipurpose space by late 2017. And just 3 miles away from the convention center, within view of Disneyland® Park’s fireworks display, Anaheim continues to embrace its small-town roots, its culture and its history in the Anaheim Packing District and Center Street Promenade.

Across the city, businesses are opening their doors to welcome residents and visitors.

Disney has committed to investing $1 billion in its resort located in the Anaheim Resort district. In 2016, Disney began construction on a “Star Wars”-themed land. Though a completion date has not been announced, several Tomorrowland attractions in Disneyland® Park, including Star Tours and Star Wars Launch Bay, reflect “Star Wars: The Force Awakens” updates, and Space Mountain is reimagined as Hyperspace Mountain for a limited time. And if your young Padawans feel strong with the Force, test their Lightsaber skills in a new immersive show at Jedi Training: Trials of the Temple. They will face Darth Vader along with the Seventh Sister-a new villain from the Disney XD series Star Wars Rebels.

FOR OVERNIGHT GUESTS Great Wolf Lodge Southern California, LEFT, has come to the Anaheim Resort, opening a family-friendly, wilderness-themed property in Garden Grove in 2016. The hotel includes a massive indoor waterpark, activity centers and a kid-friendly beauty salon. Great Wolf Lodge is part of the recent hotel development boom in the Anaheim Resort district, which now offers more than 22,000 rooms. The Hyatt House at Anaheim Resort Convention Center, Courtyard Anaheim at Maingate and Homewood Suites by Hilton — Anaheim Convention Center are among the newcomers.

CRAFTING A CULTURE It’s no accident that Anaheim is Orange County’s craft beer capital. Mayor TOM TAIT has championed the growth of the beer community since he was elected in 2010, introducing a number of initiatives that cut red tape and make it easier to open a small business in the city—greatly bolstering the industry’s growth. “We are enhancing freedoms so businesses can succeed, and an industry like craft breweries brings people together,” Tait explains. “The breweries have done a great job in forming a community. … The culture is here, and it’s growing. I think that’s exciting.”

Anaheim is already OC’s largest beer city, but Tait assures visitors and residents that there is more to come. “We are processing craft brew permits and business license applications,” he adds. “… We have our own water utility, which makes prices competitive. And, our brewers tell me that the mineral composition of our water is ideally suited for making beer.” For those eager to indulge, Tait suggests, “Take your time to research the breweries, find what you like, and enjoy.” As for the mayor’s top choice? “That would be like asking who is my favorite child! Each is unique and brings something special to the table—no favorites.”

BEACH CRUISIN’

Hop in the car, roll down the windows and follow this roadmap through Orange County’s charming coastal communities. othing connotes a family vacation like a road trip. Some of the happiest childhood memories are made from the back seat of a car, and road trips also indulge adults’ sense of exploration and adventure as they navigate endless highways. One of the nation’s most breathtaking roads is California’s state Route 1, known in most parts of the region as Pacific Coast Highway. Running adjacent to the shore of the Pacific Ocean, the road guides drivers along Orange County’s 42 miles of coastline, often with unobstructed views. From Anaheim, a 19-mile drive leads directly to Orange County’s mecca for surfers, Huntington Beach, where an unforgettable daylong trip down the oceanfront highway awaits.

HUNTINGTON BEACH

LAGUNA BEACH

Ú In 2015, Time Magazine named Huntington—known as Surf City USA— the Best Beach in America for its perfect weather and water conditions. It’s only appropriate to reserve a surfing lesson with the company founded by former Hawaii State Surfing Champion Sean Louden. Visitors will also love fishing, swimming and body surfing at Huntington Beach State Beach.

Ú Though Laguna Beach gets its arts colony reputation from the many galleries the summertime festivals, the town’s pristine coves also are the perfect setting for snorkeling. SoCal Snorkeling Tours provides all the rental equipment, boogie boards and even will bring a GoPro upon request to document the swim.

NEWPORT BEACH

DANA POINT

visitnewportbeach.com

Ú With a peninsula, numerous islands and a bustling harbor, Newport Beach has one of the most dynamic coastlines in Orange County. See the coast from the harness of a parasail floating 1,200 feet above the ocean, or board a seafaring ship with Newport Landing Whale Watching.

Ú Believed to use Dana Point’s geography as a landmark during migration, gray whales can often be seen along the coastline. View them in their natural habitat by embarking on a one-of-a-kind catamaran with Capt. Dave’s Dolphin & Whale Watching Safari, or stay on land and visit Dana Point’s Ocean Institute for an interactive and educational experience.

SAN CLEMENTE

CRYSTAL COVE

sanclemente.com

Ú A visit to the Crystal Cove Historic District nestled along Newport’s coast takes road trippers back in time to a 1930s seaside colony with pristine beaches and preserved cottages. Treat yourself to lunch and a sundae at The Beachcomber, then explore the nearby tide pools to see ocean life in its natural habitat.

Ú Finish the seaside excursion on foot with a gentle walk along the San Clemente Beach Trail, a manicured walking and bicycling path that tours nearly all of the town’s neighborhood beaches. The trip is an easy 2.5 miles, and the experience even more spectacular at night, with the crashing surf and starry sky.

Ú Make dinner reservations at in-park restaurants. Many of the dining establishments fill to capacity during meal times, so save a table for your family, or opt for one of the packages that includes reserved viewing for a nighttime show.

Ú Use the Disney

especially for the bigthrill rides. Included in your theme park admission, the system allows visitors to ride an attraction during a specified window of time, reducing the wait.

Ú Ask a Cast Member about sending purchases to will call—or directly to your hotel room if you’re staying at a Disneyland® Resort property—so you can explore the park without the inconvenience of carrying bags.

Ú Both parks feature sites for charging lockers outfitted with regular AC outlets or specialized electronic plugs. Find them on Main Street, USA, in Disneyland® Park or Buena Vista Street in Disney California Adventure® Park.

All around the city, landmarks tell the story of Anaheim’s past and present. From multimedia installations to works by acclaimed names, these public artworks are worth seeking out. H a m m C lo c k

The public sculpture showing an eclectic array of illuminated birdhouses and other objects is the work of LA artist Peter Shire, known for creating pieces for his hometown and across the country. It’s also in front of Anaheim ICE, a building designed by acclaimed architect Frank Gehry. Find both masterpieces near the traffic circle on Center Street Promenade.

Daniel Martinez’s sculpture in the commercial district near the corner of Center Street Promenade and South Center Street pays homage to the hard work of Anaheim’s early blacksmiths. A clock is situated on the precipice of the hammer head, symbolizing time’s fleeting nature.

V i d e o Tr e e s Also related to Anaheim’s working professionals, Daniel Martinez’s Video Trees located along Center Street Promenade use technology to give an informative glimpse into the work that takes place in the buildings that surround the area.

Anaheim legend states that the main road near the Anaheim Resort district owes its name to two of the town’s early settlers. When seeking a moniker for their ranch, John and Margaret Rea combined their daughters’ names, Kate and Ella, into Katella. The name caught on, and the sisters are memorialized in side-by-side statues at Anaheim GardenWalk.

Some lifelong city residents can remember when buildings were deconstructed in the 1970s and 1980s to bring the city up to modern safety code. As a memento, Buster Simpson’s benches on the corner of Center Street Promenade and South Clementine Street incorporate remnants of Anaheim’s past.
