PUBLISHER’S LETTER HAUTE DECORATION

I

PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER Christopher O. Schulz cschulz@orangecoast.com EDITOR Karine Monié CREATIVE DIRECTOR Andrew Hart • ahart@orangecoast.com EXECUTIVE VICE PRESIDENT Linda Wallis Goldstein • lgoldstein@orangecoast.com

am proud to present the latest issue of Design OC, Orange County’s décor and design magazine.

Just as a fine home deserves décor tweaks and updates, we have done the same with Design OC magazine. This issue has been edited by the talented Karine Monié, whose writing has been featured in Architectural Digest, ELLE Decoration, Interior Design, and Vogue editions in Mexico, Latin America, the UK, and the Middle East. Born in France and now an OC resident, Karine has turned her efforts to showcasing the best in décor and design in our community, which you will see throughout this issue. You will also see a new exuberance and elegance throughout the magazine, thanks to Andrew Hart, our new art director. A true Renaissance man, Andrew graduated from the Art Center College of Design and worked as a fashion photographer in New York, before turning his talents to magazine design. We are happy to welcome both Karine and Andrew to the Design OC team.

As always, this issue of Design OC showcases a variety of architectural styles, and diversity in design and décor. We take you inside a beach stunning beachfront contemporary, an urban loft in Santa Ana, and a $40 million mansion on Pelican Hill in Newport Beach. As well, don’t miss our Trends section, with the latest in color (purple, anyone?), products, and sources of inspiration. And speaking of sources, Design OC is proud to carry the messages of leading design and décor-related businesses in our community. Their knowledge, expertise and unique product lines will help bring beauty and functionality to your home, no matter what style you are considering. Give them a call, and tell them that you saw their work in Design OC. We welcome your feedback and ideas for future issues of Design OC. In the meantime, Orange Coast magazine will continue to showcase equally outstanding design and décor on a monthly basis. Subscribe, and you will receive future issues of Design OC as a bonus! MAKING A BIG STATEMENT THROUGH STRIKING FURNISHINGS WITH GEOMETRIC PATTERNS IS ONE OF THE SECRETS TO ACHIEVING THE PERFECT ART DECO AESTHETIC. Originated in France, Art Deco is a style of design, architecture and visual arts that gained popularity in the 1920s through to the 1940s. “Hygge is about an atmosphere and an experience, rather than about things. It is about being with the people we love. A feeling of home. A feeling that we are safe, that we are shielded from the world and allow ourselves to let our guard down. You may be having an endless conversation about the small or big things in life—or just be comfortable in each other’s silent company—or simply just be yourself enjoying a cup of tea”, Meik Wiking, CEO of the Happiness Research Institute in Copenhagen and author of “The Little Book of Hygge”.

Located in Pebble Beach, Monterey County, the Crocker-Fagan mansion was designed by architect George Washington Smith. The dining room’s wainscoting of carved Doria stone anchors the Byzantine mosaics, originally inset with precious stones, that cover the walls and vaulted ceiling. The present owner had Italian artisans restore the paintings.

onoring the architecture of California, this 304-page volume showcases iconic houses dating back to the mid-19th century up to the modern era. Spanish Colonial Revival, English Revival, Monterey Colonial and Italianate Victorian are some of the many styles featured in this book. Published by Rizzoli and written by Kathryn Masson, California Splendor includes 300 beautiful color photographs by David Glomb. Among the most impressive properties are Pasadena’s Gamble House, an Arts and Crafts masterpiece designed by Charles and Henry Greene from 1907 to 1909; Hearst’s palatial castle in San Simeon owned by publishing magnate William Randolph Hearst and completed after several decades of construction in 1947; and the Filoli house and garden built in 1915—which is now open to the public—in Woodside, situated about 25 miles south of San Francisco. The work of architecture and design masters Bernard Maybeck, Myron Hunt, Louis Comfort Tiffany, Lockwood de Forest and George Washington Smith—to name only a few—are part of this lavish book that celebrates the Golden State’s grandeur.

ased in Corona del Mar and founded in 2003, this interior design studio— that takes care of the very early architectural planning phases to the finishing touches—is led by Brooke Wagner. With her team, Wagner designs homes that feel cohesive through the use of clean lines, simplicity and an abundance of natural light. Layering neutrals and textures with accents of color and pattern is key in all of Wagner’s projects. “We always try to understand as much as possible the lifestyle of each client,” she says. “Good design needs to be as well thought out and functional as it is aesthetically pleasing.”

1. Sheffield – Newport Beach “This was a new ground up project in partnership with architect Bill Guidero. The clients are a young family. They wanted a large open floor plan with lots of space for entertaining and for their growing family. We used a lot of indoor/outdoor fabrics, as well as light color floors for durability and ease of use. This home is a great entertainment space for both adult and child.” 2. Seashore II – Newport Beach “This is an East Coast based family’s vacation home right on the sand! In collaboration with Bill Guidero, the house was built to accommodate the client’s immediate family, as well as host extended family and friends for weeks in the summer and long holiday weekends.” 3. Barmouth – Newport Beach “Having recently moved in, this is a space I designed for my own family with Chris Brandon Architects. The home has a very open floor plan with multiple pocketing doors for indoor/outdoor use. It was built with the intent for my children to bring friends over and have room for them to spread out. However, there are two ‘no kid zones’: the powder room and my dream master retreat with an abundance of natural light.” 4. Wheeler – Newport Beach “We made a full scale renovation in Dover Shores for a young couple ready to start a family. We worked hand in hand with Luke Showalter of Showalter Construction to open up the floor plan, add millwork, design new door systems and give the whole home a more current and transitional coastal vibe”.

FIND YOUR OWN STYLE 7. According to Designer Debbie Nassetta, from Roomscapes, these steps are important to choose the right kitchen design: • Don’t be impulsive, collect photos of kitchens you like and the right designer can help you to find your style. • Select appliances along with the cabinetry design and layout all at the same time. Don’t purchase the appliances until you have the kitchen design finalized. Consider your budget for everything. • Make a list of items that are important. For example, you may need lots of vertical storage for trays and cooling racks. Roomscapes, 1723 Westcliff Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92660.

Designer Debbie Nassetta, from Roomscapes, shared her three tips to create the perfect bathroom: A. Think about your favorite hotel or spa experience and add those touches to your bath design wish list. Towel warmers, heated flooring, rain showers, steam showers, comfortable benches, make up mirrors and great lighting can all help make your bathroom into your dream spa. B. Think about the long term use of the bathroom and how adding a great looking grab bar or designing barrier free access to the shower may help you to enjoy and stay in your home longer. C. Plumbing fixtures can range from average price to very high end, so determine the budget and make sure to consider this. Roomscapes, 1723 Westcliff Dr, Newport Beach, CA 92660.

2. Fontane Bianche by Manufacturer Salvatori + Fantini Designer: Elissa Ossino The design arose from research into archetypal forms, such as in Greek mythology, which were then translated into geometric precision and reinterpreted in a contemporary vein. A dialogue between circle and square runs through the entire collection—a metaphor for the relationship between psyche and material. 3. Calma Bathtub from Stone Forest The soft lines of this freestanding bathtub—carved from monumental blocks of Limestone and Marquina Taupe— calm the mind and soothe the soul. 4. Icona Classic by Manufacturer Fantini Designer: Vincent Van Duysen Icona Classic is a graceful, arched design accompanied by low-profile cross handles. Though the two differ in aesthetic at first glance, Belgian designer Vincent Van Duysen created a consistent rounded edge that feels ergonomic in your hand. It is available in chrome and 3 new PVD finishes (matte gun metal, matte copper, and matte British gold). Products 2, 3, and 4 are available at B&C Custom Hardware and Bath, 32 Tesla, Irvine, CA 92618

he owners of this 4,650-square-foot property—a couple who live in Austin, Texas—dreamed of having a relaxing beach home in Southern California. The project became a reality thanks to an all-star design team of Eric Olsen, Malia Grippo and Barclay Butera, and the experts at Tuscany Landscaping. Recently built a half-block from the beach in Corona del Mar, this threelevel contemporary farmhouse comprises spacious, open spaces including four bedrooms and five-and-a-half bathrooms. The white oak flooring and pristine walls, combined with black steel windows and doors, and Taj Mahal marble details make this house classic and clean at the same time. “We did the house in Barclay Butera blue and white to play off of the home’s coastal location,” says Raymond Langhammer, creative director at Barclay Butera Interiors. Inspired by the Southern California coast, the ocean and the beach, the interior design team played with these soft hues throughout the home and added some decorative elements that highlight the coastal-chic atmosphere.

“I believe there should be history in a room, whether it be a piece of art, a vintage rug or family heirloom,” says Barclay Butera, head designer for this project and founder of his eponymous studio launched in 1994. Bright and airy, the main living space is a mix and match of furnishings, objects and accessories that all contribute to a cozy feeling. “The most important room in a house for me is the family room, which has actually evolved into the great room that includes the kitchen,” Butera describes. Wood beams, stairs and pieces of furniture harmoniously blend with linens and

cotton textiles with different patterns, abstract paintings and photographs, unexpected chinoiseries and visual references to surf culture. Bi-fold moving glass walls open up to the downstairs outdoor patio (one of two courtyards) that has a water feature, which also serves as a spa. The elevator gives access to the rooftop deck, where an outside bar invites visitors to enjoy the ocean breeze. A three-car garage and an additional covered parking spot complement the many amenities of what has become a perfect seaside retreat.

or their first home, this family—an American couple with small children—jumped at the chance to purchase a coastal farmhouse with a modern twist: a new build by Graystone Custom Builders located in the residential area of Newport Heights. Divided into two floors and spread over 5,500 square feet, the property features large scale rooms with open floor plans that perfectly suit the dwellers’ needs for entertaining family and friends in a bright and fresh atmosphere thanks to the abundance of natural light. The owners trusted Costa Mesa-based studio Blackband Design—led by Greg and Wendy Blackband—to reflect their way of life and make the most of every corner of the home. “It is very important to figure out what the vibe is going to be,” the duo says. “From there, we envision the tones and fabrics.” Inspired by travel and always searching through the latest in design magazines and the web, the Blackband Design team took up the challenge to anchor each room to work on its own, In the living room, the sofas were designed by Blackband Design. Custom made pillows and ottomans covered in playfully patterned fabrics add character to the clean and custom nail head sofas and Sarreid Ltd. club chairs. while maintaining a cohesive flow with the rest of the house. Mixing clean lines with textured wallpaper, as well as wood tones with delicate fabrics, the design aesthetic is casual and polished at the same time. A blue demilune sofa in the living room, a reclaimed wood table in the dining room and the combination of blue tumbled limestone flooring with Carrara marble in the master bathroom are some of the elements that contribute to a laid-back yet sophisticated look. Keeping things bright and neutral, the white walls are

the perfect backdrop for furnishings and accent pieces that highlight details and provide rhythm. “We brought in color and texture with pillows and accessories to emulate what the client was looking for, which, in this case, was an earthy contemporary farmhouse that still had a coastal vibe,” explains Blackband Design. Designed as a retreat, the relaxing master bedroom is the owners’ refuge. Throughout the project, natural materials, oceaninspired hues and the open layout are an ode to the Orange County spirit that embraces the beauty of the coast. DESIGN OC | SPRING/SUMMER 2018

t took time and effort to find the right buyer for this exceptional mansion set on a 12.47-acre plot, the largest estate parcel in coastal Orange County. Situated less than a mile from the luxurious Pelican Hill Resort in Newport Beach, the 17,000-square-foot villa—plus separate two-story pavilion—offers panoramic views of the Pacific Ocean, the coast’s canyons and city lights. With no immediate neighbors, it provides the highest level of privacy. The gatehouse entry opens up to exceptional land that’s home to a cascading, 1-acre lake, vineyards, a horse stable and riding ring, a tennis court, and indoor and outdoor pools—all setting the tone for this ambitious project. Sold last November by John Stanaland of HOM

Sotheby’s International Realty for $40 million, the mansion is the most expensive house in Newport Beach history and the second-most expensive in the county (bested only by the $45 million Twin Points property in Laguna Beach, sold in 2016). The interior spaces—which host eight bedrooms and 10-and-a-half bathrooms—are as spectacular as the exterior areas. Exquisite materials sourced from Italy and fine custom finishes—including marble, limestone, soaring ceilings, gold leaf and ironwork—contribute to the overall classic and sophisticated aesthetic that evokes the timeless feel of a European estate. Ideal for entertaining, the caterer’s kitchen has a roll-up door, which makes gatherings of family and friends easier. Formal and intimate entertaining

At night, the wood-paneled lounge with bar and boardroom is the perfect place to spend time before getting some rest in the master wing (which has its own living and screening rooms), or one of the guest accommodations. In the basement, an indoor swimming pool offers an alternative to the outdoor pool pavilion. A high-tech theater, gym and sauna, wine cellar, staff rooms, and an exceptional 14-car garage are also located on this floor. She immediately got along with the owners, a couple, of this two-level, 3,000-square-foot house located in a gated community on the ocean side of South Laguna Beach. Half of the duo comes from Massachusetts while her husband was born and raised in Laguna Beach. “It didn’t take much convincing to work with this lovely family, whose style is a blend of East and

West coast, like my own,” Ruddo says. With one daughter and one son, the couple is passionate about surfing, and has an active and casual lifestyle that guided the choice of items, materials and textiles in all the interior spaces. “We selected durable fabrics and decided to use white slip covers that are easily washable from spills and sandy feet that inevitably occur with small children,” Ruddo says. Perfectly in line with the wide plank oak floors, cotton and linen fabrics helped to create an airy feel in this house filled with natural light. “The gallery white walls were literally a blank canvas to wash the home in calming watercolors,” Ruddo adds. “Whether it was upholstery, wallpaper or artwork, we used just about every blue and green tone. relied heavily on me to introduce color and pattern into the home while staying true to the casual and relaxed vibe we were trying to achieve.” Accustomed to integrating classical elements with polished patterns and balancing East Coast sophistication with vibrant California tones, the interior designer shaped a calming sanctuary with coastal inspirations. Occupying the second floor, the kitchen, dining room, family room and master bedroom provide ocean views. “The family room is where we used deeper hues like royal blue, turquoise and coral because of the intense sun that floods the room during most of the day,” says Ruddo. Harmonious and serene, this full-time home feels like a perfect vacation refuge. This lucky family, however, enjoys it all year long. DESIGN OC | SPRING/SUMMER 2018

or the owners, who grew up and studied in Southern California, there is nothing like living in a region where natural light and coastal views abound. With the help of Brion Jeannette Architecture, they made their dream a reality—a 4,105-square-foot house divided into two levels, plus an exceptional roof deck that offers a spectacular panorama. “In Orange County, the climate lends itself to a rich relationship with the outdoors,” says Lead Architect Brion Jeannette. “The house has a wonderful open feeling with plenty of operable windows and doors so that the outside is always welcome within, and can be enjoyed from every room.”

Filled with natural light, the home’s kitchen incorporates state-of-the-art appliances into classic cabinetry. The floor plan also includes a family room, dining room and piano salon, three guest bedrooms with ensuite bathrooms, a master suite with two bathrooms, study, exercise room, wine room, butler’s pantry, laundry room, an elevator, and three-car garage and two patios. “The hand-carved limestone at the entry was carefully created by skilled local masons,” says Jeannette. Crafted in iron, the front door leads to elegant interior spaces that feature wood floors and stones walls—essential elements of French Country-style decor. Jeannette traveled extensively throughout France and Italy, strongly studying this particular style, and giving him a deep understanding of the architectural details of Mediterranean properties.

Top left: New cellaring techniques were used in the wine cellar. Top right: The master bathroom has all the charm of country living. Bottom: The master suite captures morning sunrise and enjoys a charming patio.

“The home is Country French with an exceptional orientation and beautiful surroundings,” he adds. Among some of the biggest challenges: meeting the owners’ extensive list of spatial requirements while minimizing the environmental impact, particularly through the use of energy-conserving techniques. “Our objective was to achieve their needs without compromising the sense of openness and graciousness a home of this style should possess,” the architect explains. Charged with designing the building, floor plans and interior architecture, Jeannette’s team worked handin-hand with interior designer Lisa Henry (of Henry West Design) and the owner, making sure every corner of the interior spaces reflected a feeling of both serenity and grandeur. REINVENTING ZEN GARDENS TODAY MORE THAN EVER, HAVING A QUIET PLACE TO RELAX AND THINK, TO BREATH AND CONTEMPLATE, IS A LUXURY THAT EVERYONE—ESPECIALLY CITY DWELLERS–DREAMS ABOUT. AND LANDSCAPE DESIGN CAN HELP TO CREATE IT. by KARINE MONIÉ

o matter the size of the outdoor space, a sense of wellbeing and serenity can be achieved by finding the right components. Originating in Japan during the Muromachi period (13361573), Zen gardens are a great source of inspiration. Created to capture the essence of nature, their minimal aesthetic invokes relaxation. Simple yet carefully designed, Zen gardens usually combine rocks, which represent mountains; water features, which reference rivers and

waterfalls; moss, bushes, gravel and sand. At the heart of the concept are balance and harmony. Known for marrying creative aesthetic design with the latest sustainable products and practices, Studio H, which specializes in providing professional landscape architecture services, gives us two beautiful examples executed in Irvine houses. The projects prove that Southern California is the perfect place to create such a haven of peace.

Tuscan Zen Irvine Build time: 24 weeks “The clients are world travelers and wanted to have a unique combination of styles, including Tuscan, modern and Japanese influences,” says Warwick Hunt, Principal, Studio H. “We created a new balcony extension with solid overhead entertaining spaces below. In order to blend the new design with the landscape, we raised the existing spa, modernizing it with glass tile, and we added a two-way fireplace/water feature at the end of the existing pool. We incorporated the fireplace with a bar and barbecue area and veneered it all with the same limestone pavers as used on around the pool, which creates a clean modern finish. Gabon walls with rustic rebar cage, decorative water spills and Tuscan style planting such as lavender give a more rustic look. The ipe wood decks, bamboo and garden with sculptures add a Zen twist.” DESIGN OC | SPRING/SUMMER 2018

Modern Zen Irvine Build time: six weeks “This modern themed garden creates a softening effect by using ipe fences with a custom sheer descent fountain with an embedded opaque glass,” says Warwick Hunt, Principal, Studio H. “Stepping pads are placed in artificial turf to create a sense of elongated space. Black bamboo is used as a privacy screen and various rolled pebbles contrast with the ipe fence, turf and succulents.”

FINAL TOUCH TAILOR-MADE DESIGNED BY ZAHA HADID, THE LIMITED EDITION Z-CHAIR WAS COMMISSIONED BY MANUFACTURER SAWAYA & MORONI (BASED IN MILAN, ITALY).

Image: Enrico Suà Ummarino/Courtesy of Sawaya & Moroni, Milan, Italy

A simple three-dimensional gesture zigzags in the space as part of the continued discourse between form and function, elegance and utility, differentiation and continuity. Geometric abstractions inform the design’s linear look, which is articulated along its path in a language that alternates thin wire streams and large surfaces to provide both ergonomic affordances and inherent stability to the overall shape. The Z-chair echoes the calligraphic gestures of Hadid’s two-dimensional works; a controlled brush stroke on a canvas, the perfect synthesis of an idea: the sketch. For information on availability and price, contact Sawaya & Moroni (sales@sawayamoroni.com)
