PUBLISHER’S LETTER

PRESIDENT AND PUBLISHER Christopher O. Schulz cschulz@orangecoast.com

INSPIRATION I am pleased to share the Fall issue of Design OC, Orange County’s décor and design magazine. In this issue, Editor Karine Monie showcases a variety of design styles, taking inspiration from around the globe and around OC. We start by highlighting the work from leading French furniture companies and designers, including the new Ligne Roset showroom, Roche Bobois, and Christian Liaigre. As well, we are proud to premiere the Louis Vuitton showroom at South Coast Plaza, featuring innovative furnishings and design from Peter Marino – don’t miss the amazing LV hanging chair on page 88.

We also focus on popular trends in home design: metallic accents, geometric shapes, the modern farmhouse, gourmet kitchen and spa-inspired bathroom. As always, all are inspirational, and available here in our community.

PRODUCTION DIRECTOR Sue Branica • sbranica@orangecoast.com

We are also proud to give you a look at great home design around our county: a nature-inspired home in the hills of North Tustin; an Irvine penthouse; a Laguna Beach vacation home; and more. Finally, we take inspiration from a commercial project as well – the nautical themed architecture at the fabulous new Lido House Hotel in Newport Beach.

SALES AND MARKETING ASSISTANT Brandi Yates • byates@orangecoast.com

As always, I welcome your feedback and suggestions of what you would like to see in future issues of Design OC and Orange Coast magazines. In the meantime, I encourage you to reach out and visit the showrooms and designers whose messages are in this issue – their support makes this magazine possible, and can help your design and décor ideas become a reality. third generation Californian, Grant Kirkpatrick, founding partner of KAA Design, is renowned in the architecture world with A-list clientele that includes actors Tom Hanks and Matt Damon, and fashion designer Paul Marciano, among many others. “As an architect, I spend my life looking at property, thinking about how the people who live there will use it and about how to connect them to their land”, Kirkpatrick says. In his new book, “California Contemporary: The Houses of Grant C. Kirkpatrick and KAA Design”, he presents 24 custom homes that exemplify the California dream, including his own property, a nautically inspired home perched on the edge of the Pacific Ocean, an art collector’s home, a soaring cantilevered hillside home and a “tree house” set on a plateau conceived as a series of linked pavilions interspersed with gardens. With over 160 beautiful color photographs, this monograph is an ode to sophisticated modern living in southern California. It explores several themes such as seamless indoor-outdoor living; form, scale and proportion; whimsy and imperfection. “It gives me a lot of joy to build homes that people love living in”, Kirkpatrick says. “It gives me even more joy when those homes also connect the owners with their love of nature—or even deepen it.” § FALL | WINTER 2018

few steps from the charming boutiques and restaurants of Lido Marina Village, the new member of Autograph Collection Hotels celebrates the Southern California lifestyle through its interior design. The EDG Design team combined nautical flair and Cape Cod architecture in this retreat, which is an ode to Newport Beach culture. “Lido House is a place that has been fully inspired by its surroundings, reminiscent of my

own home on Balboa Island”, says developer Robert D. Olson. “This is a passion project in every sense of the word; Lido House is a place where the very best of Newport Beach comes together in one sophisticated celebration. A true partner in our community, a place for locals to come together and for visitors to discover what makes Newport Beach a must-visit destination.” Featuring 130 rooms, the hotel comprises a spa, fitness facility, saltwater pool and cabanas, a 15,000-square-foot indoor/outdoor event space, the FALL | WINTER 2018

Each one of them spans over 1,300 square feet and includes a rooftop deck with a barbecue and a fireplace. Named after islands in Newport Beach, they were designed by five local interior studios, ensuring different and unique looks. Grace Blu Design reflected a retro-playful aesthetic mixing California and East Coast touches through Balboa. For Bay, Mehditash Design was inspired by a “Nantucket 30

meets Newport Beach” concept. In Harbor, Brooke Wagner Design highlighted the nautical origins of the place through the navy blue deck and floating oak shelves. With its blue-and-white color palette, the Linda cottage by Erica Bryen Design took cues from Newport Beach and East Hampton. In Collins, Blackband Design opted for a coastal bohemian feel with the use of whitewashed, reclaimed brick, hand-painted marble and tiles. Located in the heart of Newport Beach, Lido House is a place where visitors and locals are invited to feel the soul of this chic Orange County gem. § lidohousehotel.com

orn in California, the husbandand-wife team of Brian Tichenor and Raun Thorp founded their eponymous practice in 1990. Since then, the duo designed over 350 projects across the country, emphasizing craft. Included in their new book “Outside In: The Gardens and Houses of Tichenor & Thorp”, this property features a living room loggia with welcoming outdoor seating, which encourages

social gatherings. “The lap pool brings an element of seclusion to the smaller space”, Tichenor and Thorp say. Inspired by the azulejos that adorn many Portuguese quintas (farmhouses), Tichenor painted a series of blue-and-white tiles and panels that border the pool and spa. “This home has elements of Mediterranean style tied into the ease and comforts of a California lifestyle”, the duo says. § Images by Roger Davies

have always been interested in creating organic environments, says Molly Wood, founder of Molly Wood Garden Design. “Nature is perfect, it is my playground and has been my inspiration from day one”. Based in Costa Mesa, the firm—which opened a retail showroom in 2008—has completed over 500 landscape design projects throughout Orange County. “This project was a complete re-do”, Wood says. “A cantina door was added to the

living room for easier access to the backyard and as the family often entertains, a pool was installed by Capaci Watershapes & Landscapes. With my team, we designed a custom, built-in bench to run along the back wall. It serves both the dining and fire pit areas and reduces the number of chairs needed at the table, which keeps the narrow space from feeling cluttered. Reclaimed wood was used behind the BBQ”. § Images courtesy of Molly Wood Garden Design FALL | WINTER 2018

n Costa Mesa’s South Coast Plaza, the recently reopened (July 11, 2018) Louis Vuitton store features a completely new façade made of laminated glass and shimmering copper. Renovated by architect Peter Marino, the largest single-level retail space of the maison in the Americas is modern, airy and bright, with an abundance of natural light thanks to three new skylights carved into the ceiling. French history and craftsmanship, as well as Southern California’s spirit and contemporary techniques—including the twisting, high-tech carbon fiber shelving which references the horizontal speed of travel—are at the heart of the concept. Colorful artworks by renowned creative minds such as Anselm Reyle, Aaron Curry, Serge Alain Nitegeka, Damien Hirst and Polly Apfelbaum are an integral part of the design. Among the most striking pieces is a 27-foot-long striped surfboard by Peter Dayton, embroidered beads on canvas by Farhad Moshiri and a large-scale photo by Richard Misrach. “We always work to select artwork that represents different countries and continents”, says Marino. “The choice of the artwork, which was driven by a desire to echo and play off the architecture and the immediate context, provides a link to Louis Vuitton’s heritage of travel and the climate and culture of Southern California.” Ready-to-wear, leather goods, shoes, accessories, textiles, watches and fine jewelry, fragrance, publishing and home: Louis Vuitton’s whole savoir-faire is showcased throughout the Costa Mesa store, which comprises exclusive products available only at this location. S

itting on a beautiful, hilly 35,500-square-foot lot in North Tustin, this 4,200-square-foot single-story home embraces its natural surroundings. “Being rooted in Los Angeles, I loved the thought of dipping my toes into the Orange County foothills and spreading my wings into the area,” says Christine Vroom, founder of Christine Kimberlee Designs. The owners—a working couple with four kids—immediately felt a connection with Vroom’s philosophy of “beauty meets function.” For this busy family, durability was essential, so Vroom used marble in small doses and some reclaimed wood to create an industrial and natural style with textures and patterns. “I didn’t want to separate the earthy surroundings of the exterior from the interior, so we

48

DESIGN OC

FALL | WINTER 2018

were able to pull in natural materials like reclaimed beams, split face stone and wire brushed oak, and had some fun with pops of encaustic tiles and ceramic pennies,” Vroom says. Always inspired by her clients’ vision, the interior designer starts every project by gathering information and inspiration, and then making changes to floor plans and layouts if needed. In this case, the open floor plan and vaulted ceiling helped to keep the space open and airy, “yet intentionally grounded with a solid foundation of French oak flooring and rustic beams,” according to Vroom. “In my opinion, the kitchen and the exterior design concepts dictate the direction of the house. The kitchen is the heart of the design and the rest streams out from there.”

While Vroom usually designs room-by-room, category-by-category, she always presents her plans as a cohesive vision. “I believe this method of full and complete design helps the client not to focus on a specific molding or faucet, but rather to embrace and digest it as the complete work of art it is,” she says. “Instead of pulling in the woodsy green and brown tones of the hills, we favored the softer, typical Orange County coastline and horizon,” Vroom explains. Blues and warm grays combined with classic white reflect a harmonious coastal feel in all the spaces. Craftsmanship, lighting, tiles— every detail contributes to this home’s both unique and cohesive look. Vroom adds, “I think of myself as an artist with a lifetime of unlimited blank canvases.” §

ith a backdrop that includes a scenic canyon and the Pelican Hill Golf Club, this house is enveloped in a dreamlike environment, just a short stroll from the beach, and the restaurants and boutiques of Corona del Mar Village. Hired by Adam Horowitz of Brixton Developers, Erica Bryen—owner and designer at her eponymous studio based in Newport Beach—worked on every detail of the project to ensure the final result evoked a sense of timelessness and warmth. “Our goal was to create a pitch-perfect home for the modern family— creating an immediate sense of place and welcoming for the future owners and their friends”, Bryen says. The challenge was designing everything from the inside out, with no current dwellers to consult. “We

wanted to create a turnkey home so the potential buyers could walk in, fall in love, and immediately feel at home”, Bryen says. Drawing inspiration from history, her extensive travels and love of fashion, the designer—a native of Southern California—knows how to combine different styles, materials and eras. She is also used to creating custom furniture that helps to shape contemporary spaces. “As we collaborated with Adam Horowitz of Brixton Developers, we not only got to select interior finishes, but also shared ideas on exterior finishes, windows and other architectural elements”, Bryen notes. “Thoughtful material selection allowed us to create distinct spaces that were inviting, and flowed from one [area] to the next—and to the outdoors—effortlessly.”

With soaring, double-height ceilings and huge volumes, the impressive entry immediately draws attention to the home’s airy spaces and out to the rear grounds. Every area has an element of surprise, like the shimmering subway tiles in the kitchen, which also features two expansive marble islands and wine cellar. A sculptural, freestanding bathtub is also unexpected in the master bathroom, a space adorned with differently shaped and patterned Carrara marble and floating cabinets customdesigned by Bryen. Bryen describes the results as “organic modern farmhouse meets coastal soft contemporary—with surprising touches of shimmer, shine and pattern to keep the overall feeling interesting, unexpected and fun”. § FALL | WINTER 2018

rom the first time designer Xander Noori met with this client, he knew it was a match. “We had great chemistry with the homeowner”, Noori says. “She has a very positive, energetic, upbeat outlook which we fell in love with right away. We really like being able to impact our client’s everyday life and felt we had a beautiful blank canvas.” A young American general practitioner with an active lifestyle, the dweller enjoys the coastal Southern California vibe. Located in Irvine, at the corner of Jamboree Road and Campus Drive, near the UC Irvine Ecological Preserve, her home is nestled in the 14th floor of 3000 The Plaza, a contemporary 15-storey high-rise tower. of amenities—including bike trails, restaurants, shops and the beach—are all within reach. Designed by MVE + Partners, the project features luxury floor plans with floor-to-ceiling windows and balconies. “This apartment is a restful urban escape with an of-the-moment rhythm and expansive views of Orange County; misty morning clouds transform into pictureperfect postcard days with city lights and stars by night”, says Noori. “We brought the elevated view indoors through a soft palette of warm neutrals for the backdrop, and juxtaposed a few pieces of furniture and art in bold colors to reflect the pace of our youthful homeowner.” Wood elements

(such as the floor) and metal finishes mix with pops of green and ultraviolet, plus a collection of photographs, creating an eclectic and sophisticated aesthetic. Textural grass cloth wall covering, clean lined upholstery and vintage lighting complement the look of the fluid space, designed for entertaining. “I love the late 1950s Kalmar ice glass chandeliers in the dining room that were refurbished from found parts, because they brought a special historic character to the space”, Noori says. What is traditionally a breakfast area was transformed into a low lounge, opening up the

n a city known for being a surf paradise, this 4,200-square-foot property is not what one would typically expect in Southern California. Its parquet flooring, moldings and beautiful doors, which were all preserved during the renovation, have the charm of an old European house. Remodeled for a family of four—a couple and their two children—who needed more space, the home was extended by architect John Stützel, while interior designer Leanne Ford (who helms Leanne Ford Interiors) was in charge of the decoration. “The owner came to me with a ton of ideas and an inspiring creative vision,” Ford says. “We worked together to create her dream home. It felt more like an art project than an interior design project!” With its surprising, textured, glossy black front doors, the entrance sets the tone for what’s inside. “We commissioned artist Carolyn Kelly to splash paint the front steps,” says the interior designer. “I love how it all turned out”. Ford kept the neutral structural elements and focused on creating a visual tension through the juxtaposition of textures and materials such as the brick and wood. A former New York City fashion stylist-turned-interior designer now based in Los Angeles, Ford knows how to inject the right dose of style into a space with the help of vintage and reclaimed elements. Ford added some glamorous details, such as the Tom Dixon ceiling lamps in the breakfast area. Featuring a more casual feel, the upper level has a hallway with darker parquet flooring and French doors that lead to the master bedroom designed with a white-on-white theme in mind. In this clean and simple space, an 1840s-era Louis Philippe oak mirror and a metal pendant by Arteriors stand out. With a mix of vintage, contemporary and artistic details, this home holds many treasures. §

P

ushing the boundaries and thinking outside of the box are talents that not many people have. Fortunately, Melissa Vieira Palazzo, founder of Halo Interior Design—based in Newport Beach—does. Perfectly understanding different design periods and how to integrate traditional with modern, Vieira Palazzo is used to introducing a few vintage pieces or antiques in current interiors, creating her own style. Located near Victoria Beach, this 4,000-square-foot house spreads over three floors, offering magnificent views all day long 66

through floor-to-ceiling windows. “It was a great opportunity to do a contemporary style at the beach versus a more traditional beach look”, the interior designer says. The sophisticated interior spaces feature charcoal limestone and countertops with glass accents mixed with dark wood and ebony-stained white oak. “I was designing for a man, so I kept the foundation deeper with lighter colors like the white walls to add drama with high contrast to accent the gorgeous art collection”, Vieira Palazzo says. With their bright hues, the abstract

artworks immediately catch viewers’ attention, contrasting with the mostly black-and-white theme throughout. “Most of my work always uses a pop of color. In this home, I wanted to experiment with the deep blood orange and ocean teal blues.” Having complete freedom to choose every detail, Vieira Palazzo also managed all the phases of the project. “I usually enjoy the construction process but I am most thrilled when the curated art collection is installed”, she says. “That is what makes a project come to life.”

The use of masculine colors and materials is balanced with the softness and sexiness of the furniture lines. “My approach is similar in the beginning with each project”, says Vieira Palazzo. “There is a creative discovery process that I personally engage in. I find inspiration in fashion and art to develop my palettes and of course I do a lot of research for architectural reference and relevance. After I complete this stage, the house usually comes to life in my mind and I execute from there. I rarely veer from my initial vision for each project.” § 68

Robin Strickler, Founder and Principal at Design Works, shares six growing fireplaces trends. 1. Traditional “One way to update an old red brick fireplace is to paint the original brick white. From there, you can add a colorful trim around the sides or a reclaimed wood trim around the mantle to turn traditional into a more rustic, boho feel.» 2. Tile “Another fun trend is to incorporate handmade embossed tiles in different colors, sizes and patterns. To make it really clean, we like to run shiplap around the fireplaces.» 3. Two-Sided “You can install a floating fireplace with seating on one side and dining on the other.» 4. Linear “Fireplaces are now lower and more linear. They have become quaint and simple, more of a box shape and style.” 5. Anchors “Today we see more great rooms—large, open areas that serve the kitchen, dining and living areas. Fireplaces are anchored around the master bedrooms and the great rooms, which can help set the overall tone of the space.” 6. Outdoor “There are fireplaces under covered loggias, near seating areas, and even freestanding. Although fire pits have also become popular over the years, the outdoor fireplace is still a focus for many new and remodeled homes.”

FINAL TOUCH

COCOON

L

aunched in 2012, the Objets Nomades collection keeps alive Louis Vuitton’s long tradition of beautifully crafted travel objects. Some of the world’s most renowned designers have since imagined 25 Objets Nomades, including Cocoon by Campana brothers. See it swinging gently from its gilded steel and brass hook and the cocoon becomes an invitation to while away the day. A delicately perforated pod of vacuummolded fiberglass—the same material as surfboards—is then covered with calfskin on the exterior and quilted leather on the inside. With its broadcloth-covered cushions that are both warm and comforting, the cocoon is like a protective shell designed to enfold, envelop and reassure. It is available in dark blue, light blue, red, yellow, turquoise, purple, caramel, coral, grey or green leather. § Louis Vuitton Costa Mesa South Coast Plaza 3333 Bristol Street Suite 2500 Costa Mesa, California 92626 www.louisvuitton.com
