ROBINSON CALCAGNIE, INC. Mark P. Robinson, Jr. has dedicated his legal career to protecting the rights of consumers — making people’s lives safer — whether they are working, driving or taking medication. As the founding and senior partner of the Newport Beach law firm, Robinson Calcagnie, Inc., Robinson has devoted his life to obtaining justice for thousands of people injured by defective products, dangerous drugs and negligence. “It has always been important to me to help people fighting an uphill battle,” said Robinson. “Consumer rights are a vital part of our nation, our legal system, and even our economy. Helping real people get the justice they deserve is what really matters to me.” Robinson’s work spans four decades, having obtained a $128 million judgment in the 1978 Ford Pinto case, Grimshaw v. Ford Motor Company. The landmark verdict is recognized by the Association of Trial Lawyers of America as one of the ten most significant civil trials of the past millennium. He was recently awarded a $46 million jury verdict on behalf of a man who lost his left leg and suffered multiple internal injuries after being hit by a Nissan parts delivery vehicle. Earlier this year he secured a $15.9 million settlement with the city of Anaheim in a lawsuit that involved a child who suffered life-altering injuries after she was struck by a car while walking to her elementary school. Peer groups and legal publications have recognized Robinson with various accolades, to name a few: the California Bar Association Litigation Section Trial Lawyer Hall of Fame; the American Association of Justice Lifetime Achievement Award; the Public Justice Champion of Justice Award; the California Lawyer magazine California Attorney of the Year (CLAY) Award; the Orange County Trial Lawyer Association Personal Injury Trial Lawyer of the Year. He has consistently been selected by the Los Angeles Daily Journal as one of the Top 100 Lawyers in California.

AITKEN AITKEN COHN A three year-old little boy lost the financial and emotional care and support of his mother when the driver of a military Humvee fell asleep at the wheel and veered into the 26-year-old mother’s car, killing her. Distraught and overwhelmed, the father came to Aitken Aitken Cohn for help. On behalf of this family, the firm took on the United States Government. After years of navigating through a complex public entity case, the firm was able to secure a much-deserved seven-figure settlement on behalf of the little boy. “It is always hard to represent a child following the loss of a parent,” says Darren Aitken, “Even so, it is extremely gratifying to be able to provide financial security to a child after such a devastating loss.” And that’s exactly what Aitken Aitken Cohn is known for: helping deserving victims persevere following unfortunate and tragic situations. Partner Chris Aitken adds, “Helping people in need and making a difference in families’ lives is the most rewarding thing we do.” In another case, expectant parents found themselves petrified when their doctor was nowhere to be found at the time of their first child’s birth.

Although frantic nurses screamed for assistance, the baby arrived unattended and due to lack of oxygen, the child is blind, wheelchair bound and severely brain damaged. With millions of dollars of anticipated costs for future attendant care and medical needs, the $4.8 million settlement Aitken Aitken Cohn secured for the family has helped ease their financial worries. “When we are able to take the economic burden off the shoulders of families in these catastrophic circumstances, it feeds our sense of purpose in practicing law and provides a ‘true north’ for our moral compass as lawyers,” says partner Richard Cohn who has specialized in medical malpractice for over 25 years. These are only a few examples of the ways in which Aitken Aitken Cohn has earned the respect of its clients, peers, the courts, and even opponents. The firm has been featured annually by U.S. News & World Report’s “Best Law Firms” and is regularly included on top tier attorney lists both statewide and nationally.

MATSEN LAW
“It’s terrifying what is happening out there. Many clients see me after it is too late. Time is of the essence and action has to be taken now.” The Orange County attorney, who has spent more than five decades protecting and managing wealth, assets and legacies for families across the globe, is now making these tools that were once only known to the “super rich” more widely available. The wealthy have long reaped the benefits of these closely guarded secrets that enable those so-called 1 percenters to pay less taxes and grow their net worth. Matsen has these tools at his disposal and is ready to share them with his clients. Matsen emphasizes that the tools are not for people with less than $1 million in assets; people making less than $100,000 a year; or people who do not own homes, or property. These tools are for: people with a lot of equity in their homes or business; anyone with assets that are at risk and people making over $100,000 a year. “Most of my business comes from referrals from attorneys,” said Matsen. “Most attorneys do not understand this work. Because we concentrate on high net worth planning in an integrated manner, we can be more cost effective and better protect our clients.” Matsen has received accolades from numerous prestigious publications and organizations. He was designated a “Top 100 Attorney”by Worth Magazine. He is designated a “Super Lawyer”and Avvo,a national organization that provides detailed information on lawyers and legal issues, ranked Matsen as a “10 Superb.”Martindale-Hubbell classified him as a “Preeminent Lawyer” and The American Bar Association commissioned Matsen to author the publication, ABA Consumer Guide to Asset Protection.

Paolo Leon is acutely familiar with the odds that are stacked against kids growing up in impoverished, crime-ridden areas like his former Shalimar/Costa Mesa neighborhood. As a fifth grader, Paolo joined the Shalimar Learning Center (which would later become THINK) with the simple goal of getting homework help. At the time, the seeds of his dream to become an architect had already taken root, and the program offered Paolo academic support, mentoring and even scholarship incentives when an anonymous donor offered “Scholar Dollars” for good grades. Paolo’s eventual academic success afforded him the opportunity to attend the prestigious college-prep Sage Hill School, where he served as student body president, and upon graduation, received acceptance letters from 10 universities. Paolo proudly earned his undergraduate degree from University of Southern California and went on to earn his MBA from Chapman University. Today, Paolo has achieved his career goals; he is Associate Partner at MVE + Partners, Inc., an architectural firm in Irvine. When not designing multi-family residential and mixed-use hotel and condo projects, Paolo enjoys raising awareness for THINK (he is the first alumni to serve on the organization’s Board of Directors). “I feel a tremendous amount of gratitude for the organization and it’s rewarding to share my experience and ensure the same opportunities that were afforded to me are available to a new generation of youth.”

As one of Orange County’s top agents at HÔM Sotheby’s International Realty, Lesher takes pride in quickly selling properties that have previously lagged on the market, often setting new pricing records for his sellers. Lesher’s love for his profession began at age 10 when he became intrigued with the beautiful cars parked outside a local real estate office. “It was the late ‘70s and real estate agents drove brand new Cadillacs. I went in there and I started talking to them and began to learn everything about that business,” he recalls. After forays in other professions, Lesher made the leap into real estate in 2007, selling $25 million his first year. In 2016, Lesher was awarded a coveted Five Star Professional designation based on client satisfaction surveys, and has been the number one agent with the most transactions in Corona del Mar since 2015. Clearly at the top of his game, Lesher’s early passions remain unchanged. Leslie Seigel of
CALIFORNIA CLOSETS When Leslie and Scott Seigel decided to purchase a company completely devoted to customizing closes, the idea of beautifying storage space was novel. That all changed when California Closets opened its doors. Originally founded in 1978 by a college student, the innovative notion of creating a special space for clothes, shoes and accessories launched an entirely new industry. The Seigels, who co-founded the first California Closets franchise 35 years ago, have spent all these years making customers dreams of a beautiful closet come true. If special lighting and glass-doored shelves for those Louis Vuitton handbags is the customer’s vision, then California Closets will deliver. For those with simpler taste, or a smaller budget, there are also an array of choices. That range in dollars translates to style too. Every closet designed by the Huntington Beach-based company is unique. Every project begins with an in-home consultation with one of their expert design consultants. The designers spend time getting to know the client. Does the client have a shoe collection befitting Carrie Bradshaw? Or maybe a Rockstar-size collection of sunglasses? California Closets will create the perfect storage space for those accessories. The result of all this collaboration? Leslie Seigel knows that a closet can transform lives. “The closet we install often becomes our client’s favorite room.”

Experiencing the unique cuisine that Mexico has to offer and seeing how there was nothing like that in Orange County inspired me to bring a small piece of Mexican culture here.” Javier’s love of “street food” has heavily influenced URBANA’s eclectic menu, which features natural and fresh ingredients including handmade tortillas, gourmet tacos and snapper ceviche, creatively prepared by Chef Ernie Alvarado. “My personal favorite are the Mole enchiladas, made with a house made Mole sauce that reminds me of home,” says Javier. Located in the Anaheim Packing House, the candle-lit ambiance at URBANA is inspired by the ‘Dia de los Muertos’ celebration, a nod to Javier’s October 30th birthday, and since opening, the restaurant has earned the Golden Foodie Award among other recognitions. “The fact that together with Chef Alvarado we were able to change how people see Mexican cuisine is a huge accomplishment.”

Dr. Lob is also a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist MFCC#39932 with a Doctorate in Clinical Psychology, and a Certified Eating Disorder Specialist through the International Association of Eating Disorder Professionals (IAEDP). With a practice that is one of the few DBT models in Orange County, Dr. Lob and her team treat adolescents and adults who struggle with emotion regulation, moods, self-harm, suicidality, relationships, self-image, and negative thinking patterns. “I love teaching and helping others and working within a team environment – it’s exciting when you get to see the patient making shifts in awareness and working to change their behaviors,” she says. “I love being on the journey with my patients and feel extremely fortunate to do the work that I do.”

For Richard, the art and craft of floor making is a family tradition. Richard and his wife oversee a flooring empire known for creating, refinishing, and maintaining the multifaceted beauty of natural wood. Gaetano’s unique offerings include many domestic and exotic woods, from intrinsically traditional to artfully avant-garde. Richard has spent time in Europe, and the company’s floors incorporate both old-world techniques and new innovations. “Creating a trend is better than following a trend,” says Richard. “I spend a lot of time mixing textures and colors to come up with fresh combinations.” Cheryll adds, “Customers come into our showroom and are amazed that we make all our floors by hand, right down to the bevel and brushed-on final coat.”

DANCE
Jodie Gates, Founder of
LAGUNA DANCE FESTIVAL Ask Jodie Gates what she loves best about her job and she’s quick to set the record straight. “I have never felt as though dance education or performance or being a director was a job, it is part of my DNA and defines who I am as an arts leader and individual.” For 25 years, the acclaimed ballerina laced up pointe shoes and pirouetted on stages across the globe. When Gates decided to hang up those satiny slippers, she traded New York City for the sunny shores of California and founded Laguna Dance Festival. She is also currently the Vice Dean of the University of Southern California Glorya Kaufman School of Dance. The Laguna Beach based nonprofit was the essence of a grassroots startup. The group of founders envisioned a company that would not only bring beautiful dance productions to the Orange County stage but also provide an educational backdrop and thriving community resource for its residents. That vision was a self-fulfilling prophesy. City Council, local business leaders and other non-profits all made Laguna Dance Festival a reality. The company survives thanks to the support of the community. All of that is what runs through Gates’ veins. “I enjoy speaking to audience goers and dance students after they have attended a Laguna Dance Festival event. Very often it is life changing and impactful in ways I could have never imagined.”

BETWEEN THE SHEETS Paul and Sandra Marx understand the nuances of producing an amazing set of sheets. The husband and wife business partners established Between the Sheets in 1986, and since its founding, the company has become known as Southern California’s premiere retail destination for the world’s finest linens. As textile industry insiders, Paul and Sandra introduced Americans to European quality sheets, bedding, down comforters and pillows, table linens, bath towels, accessories and much more. Paul’s background includes actually working in high-end mills to develop the first 1000 thread count linens. “We are direct importers,” says Paul. “Our sheet sets and duvet covers are made from the highest quality Egyptian cotton and are made exclusively for us in Italy and Germany. We have the only true ‘no iron’ 100 percent cotton sheets in the USA. They are made for us in Germany. Our down products are made exclusively for us in Denmark using Siberian white goose down. Many of the Between the Sheets accessories are one-of-a-kind and not mass produced, and the company has recently branched into home furnishings, allowing them to better stage their products in luxury environments. Of course, with a tactile product like high-thread count linens, feeling is believing. It’s no wonder the company’s packaging in retail stores remain unsealed. “You’re invited to reach in and touch them, because you can actually feel the difference,” says Sandra. “To touch, feel and dream the difference is what truly fine sheets are all about.”

THINK TOGETHER
Randy Barth became a social entrepreneur long before the term became vogue. First as a volunteer and then as CEO, Randy led THINK Together through a large-scale expansion from a single community center in Costa Mesa to 422 program sites throughout California. Today, THINK Together is the trusted partner of 43 school districts seeking to improve academic outcomes for kids. The organization’s programs and services equip students, most of them living in poverty, with the tools they need to succeed. And its school improvement model empowers educators with solutions that transform teaching and learning from the boardroom to the classroom. “When I started THINK Together twenty years ago, my goal was to work with the local community to put an end to the gangs, drugs and prostitution that were quickly overtaking the neighborhood and the schools. The growth we have seen over the last twenty years is truly unbelievable; we have seen thousands of kids beat the odds. But I know our work is not done until we fundamentally change the odds for all kids.”

She and her husband Rick, a licensed general contractor, are the owners of Roomscapes in Newport Beach, a company dedicated to helping clients bring interior design projects to life. “Coming up with solutions to our client’s space problems and fitting in all the items on their wish list is very satisfying, says Debbie. “ I love to present those first designs to clients and see how amazed they are with the potential for their new kitchen or bath. According to Debbie, trends in the industry right now include the use of lots of white, giving rooms a clean expansive look. New textured woods are also popular design elements, including soothing grays and driftwood finishes in furniture and flooring. Noting that trends come and go, Debbie advises clients to consider timeless design elements when it comes to creating a beautiful kitchen. “I personally love to have balance and symmetry in my designs.  I think all kitchens need a compliment of color, texture and finish, she explains. “I love seeing the final results of a design project and how happy the clients are. I think that good design really improves your life!

KIDWORKS
When Steve and Susie Segerstrom began volunteering at KidWorks 20 years ago, they had no idea where the journey would lead. A nonprofit with four local neighborhood centers in Santa Ana, KidWorks provides year-round educational support, health and fitness programs, and spiritual and leadership development activities for low-income children. “When we got involved, a large part of our motivation was a desire to invest in our community. Although the Segerstrom family has invested generously in arts programs over the years, we saw an equally great need to invest in the development of children in Santa Ana, where Susie was raised,” says Steve. KidWorks is a collaborative effort supported by church, civic and corporate organizations. Susie notes that the program is holistic, addressing not only education but also character development to help children become positive and productive members of society. Many graduates go on to university and come back to serve as community leaders and mentors. Thanks in part to Steve and Susie’s support, KidWorks is undergoing a major expansion that will more than double it’s space. The additional square footage will feature four new learning labs, a multipurpose educational area, a fitness center and a learning garden. Although they’ve played an instrumental role, Steve and Susie say the “secret sauce” of KidWorks’ success has been the selfless service of numerous staff members and volunteers. “These are the people who journey with the children from preschool through high school. They provide encouragement, instruction, and mentoring, as well as serving as role models for what a life of gratitude and service looks like.”
