0\ /ø H /Hþ HU 7R +XQWLQJWó %HDFK Dear Huntington Beach, I LOVE YOU! I love surfing and training in your consistent swells. You are where I started, and continue to do, much of my hard work. You are my home surf break. You delivered to me amazing waves and the chants of the HB community along the pier during my firstever win at the 2009 U.S. Open of Surfing. I will never forget the waves and support of the locals. When we’re together, I love our early mornings on the south side of the pier. I love paddling through the pylons with the familiar breakfast scents of Ruby’s Diner and the amazing backdrop of Paséa Hotel and Pacific City as the sun rises over the San Gabriel Mountains. When we're apart, I miss your waves and sunshine. I miss fueling up for my morning surf at Huntington Surf & Sport’s Java Point and refueling with a hearty Keppler’s special at the legendary Sugar Shack Cafe. I love Tuesday nights—sitting with the Toyota of Huntington Beach crew during Surf City Nights on Main Street, greeting the kids and families and seeing the sea of smiles. And most of all, I love your laid-back, sunny community. Huntington Beach, when I’m with you, I know I’m with family and friends. XO,

“Families looking for a quintessential beach city—complete with bleached hair, bare feet and unparalleled level of ‘stoke’—will find all this and more during a weekend in Huntington Beach, a Southern California hot spot that boasts 10 miles of uninterrupted coastline running parallel to the state’s iconic Pacific Coast Highway.” — Emma Weissmann, TravelAge West, March 2016

When my family and I initially volunteered for the 2016 Breitling Huntington Beach Airshow, it was to honor my dad’s memory. He fought in Korea and was a Thunderbird before they were organized. What I had no inclination of at the time was how amazing being a Wingman would be! We saw lots of dedicated volunteers, both local and far. We all came together and bonded over a daunting task. A huge thank you to the experts who oversaw us, the planning crew, the team leaders, the state and government branches who kept us safe, the amazing talent who performed, and the generous sponsors who made this dream a reality. The three days of the Airshow was humbling and very emotional. To see all of these complete strangers come together in a time of global uncertainty with so much love and pride in our country…I just can’t put the feelings into words. If you have a chance to volunteer for the upcoming Airshow, you won’t regret it. It’s work, but extremely rewarding.

Running Surf City was everything I anticipated! The crowd along the course provided incredible energy to push through those tough mental miles and finish strong. My favorite part of this course has to be the stunning views. Having a visual of the Pacific Ocean during a race is sure to give any athlete a thrill. There was great hydration and nutrition support on the course too. Another bonus to this gorgeous race is the after-party. People want to stay and hang out to enjoy our spectacular city. The vibe is fun and relaxed, with people genuinely wanting to share their experience while enjoying the beach. Runners of all backgrounds and abilities should experience the Surf City USA Marathon at least once; you will have an enormous appreciation for how peaceful the beach can be!

I knew surfers were relaxed and friendly people, but even that didn’t prepare me for the atmosphere of the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach. When they say “open,” they really mean open. The event is free to the public, and the best seats in the house— right there on the shoreline, in front of the action—are available to anybody. I loved the festival vibe, with fairgroundstyle games and massive bean bags to lounge on, and the shopping opportunities at the Hear Vans store were fantastic. Best of all, you more from Patricia at can even surf there. Not, of course, right sportsister.com/2016/08/ in the middle of the competition, but just 25/travel-head-to-theon the other side of the iconic pier while surf-californiapro surfers are strutting their stuff. A truly dreamin unforgettable experience.

BEACHES

Explore All 5 Beaches

Huntington Beach’s shoreline stretches for 10 uninterrupted miles/16 kilometers of wide, sandy beach begging aquaphiles and sun worshippers to come play. There are five distinct public beaches along the coast, each with its own amenities and charm.

From North to South: 1 SUNSET BEACH Rundown: Charming California beach community stretching 1.5 miles from Anderson Street to Warner Avenue. Features one of the widest beaches in Southern California and a parallel pastoral 14-acre park, the "Green Belt," where residents walk their dogs and children enjoy the playground. Amenities: Public restrooms, outdoor showers, and a playground. Hours & Parking: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Score free parking in the lot at Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway. Public parking also available along Pacific Avenue. Concessions: Go shopping and grab a bite at one of many local shops and restaurants along Pacific Coast Highway.

BOLSA CHICA STATE BEACH Rundown: Nirvana for newbies. Spanning south from Warner Avenue to Seapoint Street, this 3-mile stretch of beach attracts swimmers, novice surfers, surf schools, and surf fisherman alike, given the shallow water and smaller waves. Amenities: Public restrooms, outdoor showers, wheelchair accessibility, Visitor Center, beach volleyball and basketball courts, year-round RV camping (reserve via Reserve America), paved beach path, picnic 2

ramadas, barbecue grills, and 200 fire rings available on a first-come, first-served basis. Pro tip: Arrive early to claim one during peak season, or reserve a picnic area, which comes with a fire ring. Hours & Parking: 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. Ample lot space for $15 per day for standard rides and $30 per day for oversize vehicles. Rates subject to change at any time without notice. Concessions: The best in town. Choose from four new gourmet concessionaires, from north to south: SeaLegs at the Beach, SeaSalt Beachside Burger, Beach City Provisions, and Pacific Kitchen. Perks: The Bolsa Chica Lifeguard Headquarters and Campground Amphitheater host year-round educational programs for adults and children. 3 HUNTINGTON DOG BEACH Rundown: A 1.5-mile salty dog's paradise along the bluffs between Goldenwest and Seapoint streets. The only stretch of beach in Huntington Beach where dogs are permitted and allowed off-leash. Amenities: Public restrooms, picnic area with tables, and doggie waste bags. Hours & Parking: 5 a.m. to 10 p.m. Metered parking available for $1.50 per hour in two lots along Pacific Coast Highway. Rates subject to change at any time without notice.

Shout-out to The Preservation Society of Huntington Dog Beach, who makes it possible for pups to enjoy Dog Beach— which has been consistently voted the top Dog Park/Beach in Orange County by OC Register’s “Best of OC” list. 2 0 • H U N T I N G T O N B E A C H 2 0 1 7/ 1 8

4 HUNTINGTON CITY BEACH Rundown: Where the city meets the surf, not to mention the majestic Huntington Beach Pier. This 3.5-mile stretch of beach serves as Downtown’s pristine backdrop. It’s where the action is. Amenities: Public restrooms, outdoor showers, wheelchair accessibility, Visitor Information Kiosk (say hello to Kevin!), beach volleyball, surfboard and bicycle rentals, RV camping October-May, paved beach path, and 100 fire rings available on a first-come, first-served basis. Rates subject to change at any time without notice. Concessions: Dwight’s, Jack’s, Zack’s, and Naugles by the Beach—specializing in tacos and burritos—all offer beach concessions. Ruby’s Diner, Duke’s, and Sandy’s Beach Shack invite diners off the boardwalk and indoors—with killer views. 5 HUNTINGTON STATE BEACH Rundown: Sprawling over 121 acres, this long stretch from Beach Boulevard to the

Let’s Go Surfin’ Now EVERYBODY’S LEARNIN’ HOW

2 2 • H U N T I N G T O N B E A C H 2 0 1 7/ 1 8

We are the official Surf City USA—for good reason. Our rich surf heritage dates all the way back to 1914, when George “Father of Modern Surfing” Freeth first demonstrated surfing at the Huntington Beach pier. Since then, the city’s surf culture has evolved through decades of legendary surfers, surf shops, surfboard shapers, and surfing contests. Evidence of our epic history can be seen all over town: Surfing Walk of Fame along the sidewalk next to Jack’s Surfboards, Surfers’ Hall of Fame in front of Huntington Surf & Sport, and the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum at 411 Olive Ave., where you can witness the 42-foot long World’s Largest Surfboard. KANOA IGARASHI BY WAX SUZUKI

Surf City USA is home to numerous surf heroes—some currently competing! U.S. Open of Surfing champions Brett Simpson (2009) and Kanoa Igarashi (2015) are both current contenders in the World Surf League’s (WSL) Men’s Qualifying Series and Men's Championship Tour (CT), respectively. Igarashi, 19, is on fire! At the Billabong Pipe Masters—the 11th and final stop of the 2016 CT—he beat out legendary 11-time WSL Champion Kelly Slater in the quarterfinals.

Talk Like A Pro BARREL: When a wave breaks so as to form a hollow or tube in which a surfer can ride with water on both sides and overhead – a peak surfing experience. BOTTOM TURN: Throughout a ride, a surfer will go down the wave face to get up speed, then turn off the bottom and travel along the wave face or back up to the lip. CARVE: Ride the face of the wave. CAUGHT INSIDE: When a surfer is paddling out through the impact zone. DROP IN: When a surfer catches a wave by cutting off another surfer who is already riding it. Often done by kooks, it is considered a serious breach of etiquette. DUCK DIVE: Pushing the nose of the board underwater and diving under a breaking wave while paddling out through the impact zone. FACE: The shore-facing slope of a wave – where surfers ride. GROM: A young surfer – early teens or younger. KOOK: A person who doesn’t know or disregards basic ocean safety and surfing etiquette. Usually, an inexperienced surfer. LINEUP: The group of surfers hanging out just beyond the waveline, waiting for a good set. LIP: The upper edge of a wave that comes forward over the top when it breaks. SET: A grouping of larger-thanaverage waves. Sets arrive at irregular intervals throughout the day. SWELL: A period of big waves generated by a storm offshore. WIPEOUT: Falling off the board (especially in spectacular fashion) while trying to catch a wave or in mid-ride.

2 Gather ‘Round A Beach Bonfire Just south of the pier in front of Pacific City, coveted concrete fire rings begin to dot the sand, beckoning beach-goers for a traditional sunset s’mores session. Grab a blanket, firewood, and your favorite fixin’s, and toast ooey-gooey marshmallows to your heart’s content. You can also beach barbecue at fire pits along Bolsa Chica State Beach to the north and Huntington State Beach to the south. Prefer to skip all the prep and get right to roasting?

Beachside concessionaire Waterfront Adventures offers “beach butler” services that start and maintain your fire, and even provide blankets, chairs, and s’mores kits. 3 Bump & Spike Actively enjoy the sand by partaking in one of Huntington Beach’s most popular sports: beach volleyball. Nearly two dozen nets on either side of the pier await players of all skill levels, with more at Bolsa Chica State Beach to the north and Huntington State Beach to the south. Nets are free, and balls are available for rent at beach concessionaires.

Shhh, it’s a secret!

1 Stroll The Pier Measuring 1,850 feet in length, the iconic Huntington Beach Pier is one of the longest—and most photographed—piers on the West Coast. Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean at the intersection of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway, the pier symbolizes the heart of Huntington Beach. A leisurely stroll offers stunning panoramic views of Catalina Island, Newport Beach, Long Beach, and San Pedro, along with aerial scenes of the surf action. Step into Surf City Store for souvenirs, The Kite Connection for colorful acrobatic silks and ribbons, or Let’s Go Fishing for a rod, reel, and bait to cast your line off the pier (no license required).

4 Beach Yoga Stretch, breathe, and recenter with the ocean as your backdrop, and ocean waves as your playlist. All-level donation classes take place throughout the week, and some instructors will even bring you a mat if requested. Schedule a class through Toes on the Nose or find the most up-to-date class listings at meetup.com. 5 Huntington Beach Central Park Just five miles from the Huntington Beach Pier sprawls this lush 350-acre oasis, lauded as the largest city-owned park in Orange County. Explore its meandering trails, paved paths—great for leisurely bike rides

Inside Central Park awaits a Secret Garden, home to drought-tolerant plants, blooming flowers, and fluttering butterflies. Hundreds of volunteers have worked to revitalize the lush xeriscape—a landscape JAMES DOMBROWSKI requiring little or no irrigation—creating sustainable picture-perfect worlds like the Dry Stream Bed, Storybook Area, Butterfly Garden, and incoming Butterfly Bar. Wander through the oasis and enjoy the beauty created by the Huntington Beach Tree Society and its dedicated team. Hug a tree while you’re at it. I adored my stay and experience in Huntington Beach and would love to go back soon! The atmosphere is so laid-back, relaxed, and enjoyable. I did some surfing and even had s’mores on the beach after watching an incredible sunset. Doesn’t get much better than that, am I right? I've been wanting to learn how to surf for two years now. When I had a chance to learn in the most iconic surf city in the U.S., there was no way I was going to pass up that opportunity. From the first light of dawn to the last light at dusk, you can find people out there waiting for a wave to break. Being in that scene, even for just a little bit, was really inspiring. And hey, I even managed to catch a couple of waves myself thanks to Toes on the Nose!

Living in Southern California, we are spoilt for choice when it comes to beaches. However, Huntington Beach proved to be the perfect backdrop for a mother and son weekend getaway. With numerous hotel options, right on the beach, the Waterfront Beach Resort, a Hilton Hotel, won us over with its family-friendly offerings and welcoming staff. Spending our day riding bikes up and down the beach searching for the elusive sand dollar was the perfect way to disconnect and reconnect. Worn out after a day of pedaling, we relaxed in the sand watching a beautiful California sunset, while munching on s’mores at our very own beach bonfire. Apart from expansive and beautiful beaches leading to a vibrant surfing history and culture, there is even more to this coastal town in Orange County. Get off the beaten path at the canals of Huntington Harbour, where visitors can kayak, paddle board, or even drive their own electric Duffy boats like we did. I was a nervous wreck driving a boat for the first time, but it ended up being one of our favorite activities. The beautiful scenery, delicious food, and quality time we experienced as a family must be why my 6 year old continues to ask for a return trip.

The Heart of Huntington Beach

DWIGHT'S CHEESE STRIPS @CUCAROO

Try Dwight’s Beach Concession’s famous cheese strips: a heaping pile of thin hand-cut tortilla strips topped with grated cheese and their famous secret red sauce.

Historic Main Street, charming Fifth Street, and newly minted Pacific City and LOT 579 blend classic and modern sights and sounds, mixed with delicious flavors and textures. Eminently walkable, bikeable, and surfable, the vibrant area caters to all visitors with rentals, lessons, shops, galleries, and an unwavering love for waves.

PACIFIC CITY

5 TO TRY 1 Live like a local and hit Surf City Nights, Downtown’s Tuesday night community street fair and farmers market from 5-9 p.m. 2 Visit the Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum for a lesson in surf culture and history, and to take a selfie with the World’s Largest Surfboard. 3 Behold local, regional, and national art exhibits at the Huntington Beach Art Center. 4 See which of your favorite surfers have the same hand and shoe (or flip-flop) size as you at the Surfers’ Hall of Fame in front of Huntington Surf & Sport at Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway. 5 Peruse local wares at the oceanfront Pier Plaza Art-A-Faire every Friday, and sample local fresh fruit at the neighboring Certified Farmers Market.

Pacific City keeps it playful with community ping pong and foosball tables, live music, outdoor movies, and other pop-up events throughout the year.

OLD CROW SMOKEHOUSE

BITES & SIPS Main Street begins with classic beach concessionaires like Jack’s, Zack’s, and Dwight’s—and leads along a drag dotted with diverse bites. Hit George’s Grill, one part Mexican grill and one part backyard grill; 2nd Floor, American-fusion fare served against a tattoo wall art backdrop; and Longboard Restaurant & Pub, straight out of “Cheers” with standard American grub, cold beer, and a chill back patio. Need a quick boost? Milk & Honey serves organic coffee, tea, and treats in a cozy, artsy space. THE BACKHOUSE

Running parallel with Main Street, Fifth Street offers a quieter strip of equally distinct eateries. Cut into a Belgium waffle sandwich at Bruxie, bite into the spirit of aloha at North Shore Poke Co., and be greeted by delicious southern spices at Ritter’s Steam Kettle Cooking. A short walk south brings you to Pacific City, Huntington Beach’s new restaurant-retail hub, and adjoining LOT 579, our new modern food hall. Here, you’ll find tastes from all over the globe, from Old Crow Smokehouse’s zippy southern barbecue to The Backhouse’s exquisite Japanese yakitori and sushi. Need a quick pick-me-up over here? San Francisco-based Philz Coffee makes a mean Mint Mojito Iced Coffee.

BEACH BASICS

BEACH SAFETY TIPS The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring that Surf City’s beaches remain accident-free. Here are safety tips developed by the lifeguards in conjunction with the US Lifesaving Association. For more information, visit USLA.org. Check on Conditions. Before entering the water, ask lifeguards about conditions. Never Swim Alone. Use the buddy system so someone will always know where you are. Swim Sober! Alcohol increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability. Know Your Skill Level. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, especially on rough days. And stay ashore if you’re a non-swimmer. Don’t Panic in Rip Currents. Don’t try to swim directly back to shore. Calm yourself, then swim parallel to shore until the current eases and you can return to the beach. Swim Near Staffed Lifeguard Towers. Our lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much safer if they know where you are. Stay in Designated Areas. Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and piers too. Do the Stingray Shuffle. Shuff le your feet to scare away the occasional stingray. Extend a Hand Out in front of you in shallow breaking water when diving, body surfing, or wiping out on a surfboard. Don’t Dig Deep Holes. Deep holes can cave in and create hazards for small children, so refill any holes you dig. Do Not Bring Glass to the Beach. Remember, there are all sorts of bare feet.

FINAL WORD Beach Digs With A My #SurfCityUSA Ambassador Casey Patterson is an Olympic volleyball player and a current contender on the 2017 Association of Volleyball Professionals (AVP) Tour—signature mohawk included. He can often be spotted on the sand in Huntington Beach during AVP events and practice sessions. Throughout his professional career, he’s earned 15 first place finishes. My family and I lived in Huntington Beach for more than 10 years. It’s my favorite place on the planet because it offers something for everyone, including me, professional beach volleyball player and family man. There’s always something exciting going on all year round. At the iconic pier alone you have the farmers market, drum circle, and annual U.S. Open of Surfing, as well as Surf City Nights every Tuesday along Main Street. I can’t explain how special of a place Huntington Beach is for my family and I. Thank you for exploring my #SurfCityUSA. I think you’ll love it just as much as we do.
