AT THE BEACH

(BESIDES SURFING) With its 10 miles of uninterrupted coastline and consistent sunny skies, Huntington Beach is a beach lover’s paradise. As the offi cial Surf City USA, we pride ourselves on our vibrant deeprooted surf culture, but our beaches offer much more than epic surf.

1 » Embrace Your Inner Beach Lover There’s no shame in rolling out your towel, slipping on your shades, and soaking up some rays from dawn ’til dusk. Just don’t forget your sunscreen! Listen to the waves, inhale the salty sea, and feel the warm California sun kiss your skin. Go ahead and pinch yourself. Your daydream has come true.

2 » Make New Four-Legged Friends Dogs and dog-lovers alike flock to Huntington Dog Beach—the “pawfect”

3» Bonfire S’mores Just south of the pier in front of Pacific City, our coveted 500 concrete fire rings begin to dot the sand, beckoning beachgoers for a traditional sunset s’mores session. Grab a blanket, firewood, and your favorite fixin’s—like the traditional graham crackers and chocolate bars—and toast ooey-gooey marshmallows to your heart’s content. You can also beach barbecue at fire pits along Huntington State Beach to the south and Bolsa Chica State Beach to the north. If you prefer to skip all the prep and get right to roasting, beachside concessionaire Waterfront Adventures offers “beach butler” services that start and maintain your fire, and even provide blankets, chairs, and s’mores kits.

3) Favorite HB surf spots? I really like the pier because it’s the center of it all and where the best surfing is taking place on a day-to-day basis. There are a couple other nooks and crannies I escape to as well, but I’ll keep those a little secret.

TALK LIKE A PRO BARREL: When a wave breaks so as to form a hollow or tube in which a surfer can ride with water on both sides and overhead – a peak surfing experience.

DROP IN: When a surfer catches a wave by cutting off another surfer who is already riding it. Often done by kooks, it is considered a serious breach of etiquette.

BOTTOM TURN: Throughout a ride, a surfer will go down the wave face to get up speed, then turn off the bottom and travel along the wave face or back up to the lip.

DUCK DIVE: Pushing the nose of the board underwater and diving under a breaking wave while paddling out through the impact zone.

SET: A grouping of larger-thanaverage waves. Sets arrive at irregular intervals throughout the day.

FACE: The shore-facing slope of a wave – where surfers ride.

SWELL: A period of big waves generated by a storm offshore.

GROM: A young surfer – early teens or younger.

WIPEOUT: Falling off the board (especially in spectacular fashion) while trying to catch a wave or in mid-ride.

CARVE: Ride the face of the wave. CAUGHT INSIDE: When a surfer is paddling out through the impact zone.

COURTNEY CONLOGUE COURTESY BILLABONG

KOOK: A person who doesn’t know or disregards basic ocean safety and surfing etiquette. Usually, an inexperienced surfer.

LINEUP: The group of surfers hanging out just beyond the waveline, waiting for a good set. LIP: The upper edge of a wave that comes forward over the top when it breaks.

Huntington Harbour was formed in the 1960s as a series of harbors, peninsulas, and five man-made islands. Dating back to 1905, Sunset Beach became part of Huntington Beach in 2011. Together, these two areas combine to form a unique escape, where kayaking, paddle boarding, and boating are enjoyed by just as many who prowl the Sunset Beach shops, bars, and restaurants. The region is a relaxing, picturesque place that still

represents one of the better “secrets” in Southern California. It’s also a rewarding spot to ride bikes, thanks to the Sunset Beach back alleys by the water and the safe, serene Harbour neighborhoods that gently wrap around the many waterways and channels.

SIGHTS & SOUNDS Hit The Beach » Come here for the 1.5-mile stretch of quiet, notably wide beach, and stay for the dining, drinks, and window shopping. Starting at DON THE BEACHCOMBER

Those trunks are one of the, if not the, first surf trunks made in California, and the teen went on to become one of the first professional surfers. OLD SCHOOL MEETS LUXURY Look for the iconic Sunset Beach Water Tower, a replica of a historic Huntington Beach water tower that’s been towering over Sunset Beach since the 1960s. Charming, tucked away, and locked in another era, Sunset Beach and Huntington Harbour are throwbacks and a riddle of sorts. A place at the north end of town where old-school beach culture co-mingles with the mystique of waterfront estates and luxurious yachts. Secluded and seductive with both a slightly European flavor and a full dose of classic Southern California magic, a day or two spent in Huntington Harbour and Sunset Beach will no doubt slow the clock down and make for many postcard moments. Between both salty-aired universes, there is something for everyone.

The Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the largest saltwater marsh along coastal California between the Monterey Bay and the Tijuana River Estuary. It covers almost 1,500 acres of fresh and saltwater wetlands habitat, a boardwalk over the marsh, and five miles of trails through the lowlands and mesas. » BY MARY URASHIMA

HISTORY With over 8,000 years of human history in Bolsa Chica, visitors to the wetlands are on the original land of the Tongva, some of the first Californians. What Does The Name Mean? » Bolsa Chica got its name during California’s Spanish and Mexican Rancho period (18th century to mid-19th century). The name Bolsa Chica, or “little pocket” or “little bag” in Spanish, refers to the little pockets of land throughout the wetlands on which the early ranchers would graze cattle. Playground Of California Tycoons » By 1904, railroad baron Henry E. Huntington brought his “Red Car”—the Pacific Electric Railway—to the coast, with a stop near the famous Bolsa Chica Gun Club, a weekend duck-hunting lodge for the wealthiest of California tycoons at the dawn of the 20th century. Hollywood stars, Babe Ruth, and the Prince of Wales, later to be known as King Edward VIII of Great Britain, came to the Bolsa Chica Gun Club. Once A Military Defense Site » World War II brought the U.S. Army to downtown Huntington Beach and to Bolsa Chica. Underground bunkers

constructed during that time— now closed to access—lie hidden within the wetlands. Hikers with a keen eye will spot the remnants of gun emplacements installed on the bluffs. Today, the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve is the result of decades of effort by conservation groups to save one of the largest wetland areas on the Pacific Flyway, allowing visitors a chance to step back in time and enjoy the serenity of a pristine coastal environment.

SIGHTS, SOUNDS & SNACKING Parking » Both the north parking lot (3842 Warner Avenue) and south parking lot (18000 Pacific Coast Highway) can fill quickly on the weekends. Additional public parking can be found across from the north parking lot on Warner Avenue, near the Huntington Beach Fire Station. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy Interpretive Center is open seven days a week, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibits on marine and coastal wildlife are educational for everyone, but especially fun for the kids! Birding » Over 300 bird species have been recorded at Bolsa Chica, a favorite place for birders from around the world and a major stop on the Pacific Flyway. The Bolsa Chica Conservancy offers a bird checklist and a seasonal viewing guide at bolsachica. org. The site of migratory geese setting down at dusk to rest for the night is not to be missed. Visitors are reminded to stay on the paths to protect sensitive nesting areas.

Highway. The Amigos also offer a special bird talk and nature walk the last Saturday of the month, beginning at 9 a.m. and starting from the south parking lot. Longer, private tours can be scheduled at amigosdebolsachica.org. The Bolsa Chica Land Trust offers a tour on the third Sunday of the month at 10 a.m., starting from the south parking lot off Pacific Coast Highway. More information about the Land Trust at bclandtrust.org. Bring Your Camera » A walk in the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve brings the unexpected. You might see manta rays or halibut swimming underneath the boardwalk, egrets fishing in the marsh, bunny rabbits darting through the brush, or wildflowers blooming on the mesa. Almost everyone you’ll see walking Bolsa Chica has a camera in hand.

DINING There are no picnic sites in the reserve, but there are great places to dine—casual and upscale—just north and south of Bolsa Chica on Pacific Coast Highway and inland. Local favorites include Bolsa Chica State Beach’s new concessionaires, offering bistrostyle menus and libations; and Secret Spot, tucked inside a row of eateries near Warner Avenue and Pacific Coast Highway and serving up a diverse, mouthwatering menu of burritos, tacos, wraps, soups, salads, bowls, breakfast burritos, pancakes, and fresh juices—vegetarian- and vegan-friendly.

Before or after, leash your canine companion and stroll the various trails weaving through the rest of the picturesque park. More on Huntington Beach Central Park on p. 47. RUNNING OF THE WIENERS Traditionally held every second or third Sunday from 3-4 p.m. at Old World, and every Sunday during Oktoberfest, the popular wiener dog race places ambitious Dachshunds into four weight classes and sends them through an entertaining 22-yard dash. Watch from the beer garden. More on Old World on p. 45. SO CAL CORGI NATION BEACH DAY More than 1,000 corgis and dog lovers take to Huntington Dog Beach for this fun-filled “pawty” every spring and fall.

DOG-FRIENDLY DINING Main Street itself is lined with dog-friendly restaurant patios, including Baja Sharkeez, a lively mesquite Mex broiler, No Ka Oi, a casual Hawaiian-Asian fusion eatery, and Pizza Lounge, an upscale artisan pizzeria. Here are five local favorites: PARK BENCH CAFE Nestled inside Huntington Beach Central Park along Goldenwest Street, Park Bench Cafe reigns supreme as the best dog-friendly restaurant in town. It not only features abundant outdoor seating and complimentary water bowls, it also serves up an entire “Canine Cuisine” menu of sweet and savory treats. After a long stroll around the dog-friendly park, order up the Hound Dog Heaven (juicy ground beef) or the Wrangler Roundup (lean ground turkey) for that doggy on a diet, plus a Peanut Butter Puppy for good measure.

ZIMZALA The Kimpton Shorebreak Hotel’s mellow restaurant and bar welcomes pups on its patio and comes complete with a dedicated “Four Legged Children” menu. Treat your best friend to nutritious dishes by JustFoodForDogs, including Beef and Russet Potatoes with carrots, green beans, and green peas; Chicken and White Rice with spinach, carrots, and apples; and Fish and Sweet Potatoes with Pacific cod, green beans, and broccoli. TOP DOG BARKERY Pamper your pup at Pacific City’s dog “barkery,” offering treats like personalized cakes, pastries, healthy chew sticks, and packaged “Made in America” bites. Accessories, toys, grooming supplies and services, and doggie daycare spoil pups on every level. Visiting on your fur baby’s birthday? They’ll host the party for free, complete with sample treats and take-home doggie goodie bags.

THE “DOG HOUSE” SHOREBREAK HOTEL Pets of all types and sizes are honored at this boutique Kimpton hotel. Their promise: “If your pet fits through the door, we’ll welcome them in.” They’ll spoil your pup with outstanding amenities like front desk treats, plush pet beds, water bowls, cleanup bags, a dog-friendly restaurant and menu, and a nightly wine reception from 5-6 p.m. for guests and their pets who love to party—all at no extra cost. WATERFRONT BEACH RESORT Thanks to the Hilton’s pet-friendly program, “Wag It At The Waterfront” provides care packages, recognition by name on their “Doggie Reader Board,” pet beds, feeding bowls, treats, cleanup bags, petsitting services, and even a pet room service menu. HYATT REGENCY RESORT & SPA Dogs weighing 50 pounds or less are welcome in designated pet-friendly rooms at the Hyatt Regency. Amenities include food and water bowls, a pet pillow, and dog treats available for purchase. PASÉA HOTEL & SPA New in town, Paséa knew best to cater to pups, which is why the pet-friendly hotel also offers amenities for pooches, including treats, beds, feeding bowls, and more.

SIT STAY CAFE If the name doesn’t say it all, rest assured that this downtown Huntington Beach cafe loves canines and coffee alike. Conveniently located about one mile from Dog Beach at 11th and Orange streets, the cozy cafe invites dogs and their owners to refuel on the front patio. Sip a hot cup o’ joe and fill up on a breakfast sandwich while your pup sips from complimentary water bowls and nibbles on courtesy treats. If you’re visiting around the holidays, “Santa Paws” traditionally makes an appearance in early December. FRED’S MEXICAN CAFE Perched at the corner of Main Street and Pacific Coast Highway, Fred’s hosts “Doggie Date Night” every Monday from 6 p.m. to midnight on the patio—with a stunning view of the pier and Pacific Ocean. With your purchase of an entree, your pup scores a complimentary dinner, including generous bowls of kibble and water.

FAMILY

YOUR GUIDE TO FAMILY-FRIENDLY FUN

Coastal Playground BY MARCIE TAYLOR

Sunny weather makes Huntington Beach a wonderful, playful

VANS OFF THE WALL SKATEPARK

place to visit for the young—and the young at heart. Here you’ll find endless kid-friendly activities and destinations all year round. Explore our coastal playground with the entire family at these top places to play, and discover some local favorites while you’re at it.

SPEND A DAY AT THE BEACH Our miles of sandy beach offer a spot for everyone, whether your family prefers to play in the water, on the sand, or both. Spend a day by the world-famous Huntington Beach Pier building sandcastles, learning to surf, riding bicycles, and cooling off in the waves. On another day, head south toward Pacific Coast Highway and Magnolia Street to Huntington State Beach, which offers a relaxing vibe. Stay ‘til sunset and gather ‘round a fire ring for a quintessential Southern California beach bonfire experience. Local Secret Spot Mother’s Beach, aka Davenport Beach, is a small beach tucked inside a quiet neighborhood in Huntington Harbour. Its calm waters COURTESY VANS

make for an ideal spot for very young children.

GO SKATE Kickflip and grind at Vans Off The Wall Skatepark near Old World, featuring a large street course with two bowls—a flow bowl and a clover bowl. It’s free and open to the public, 7 days a week, weather permitting. Skateboarding is allowed every day, and BMX bikes are welcome on Wednesdays. The helmet rule is strictly enforced, and skaters under age 18 are required to wear knee and elbow pads.

MORE OUTDOOR FUN Rent a kayak or stand up paddle board (SUP) at one of the shops on Pacific Coast Highway and cruise down the smooth waters of Huntington Harbour. Purchase a kite from Kite Connection on the pier and fly it on the beach. Or try disc golf at Huntington Central Park’s disc golf course on Goldenwest Street. If real golf is more your speed, hit a few balls at the driving range at Meadowlark Golf Club, at Graham Street and Warner Avenue.

Looking for some indoor activities? Head to Fuzion at Edinger Avenue and Gothard Street for laser tag and arcade games. Jump around at Get Air Surf City indoor trampoline park near Bolsa Chica Road and Bolsa Avenue.

GO FOR A NATURE WALK With the sun always shining, it’s easy to have fun outdoors. Here in Huntington Beach, you can enjoy wildlife viewing and hiking at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. Encompassing approximately 1,400 acres of coastal estuary and housing more than 300 identified bird species, the wetlands are a popular destination for birders and photographers. Sunsets here are especially breathtaking. Incorporate an educational component by visiting the Interpretive Center just up Warner Avenue from Pacific Coast Highway. Visit bolsachica.org for a calendar of events. Another spot for nature tripping is Shipley Nature Center at Huntington Beach Central Park. Admission is free and donations are appreciated. Stop by the Interpretive Center to prepare for the family’s self-guided trail hike, which steers through several California native habitats. Children’s programs are frequently offered. Visit shipleynature.org for a calendar of events. Local Secret Spot The Urban Forest, north of Ellis Avenue between Goldenwest and Edwards streets, is a passive park featuring California native plants, trees, and flora. This “secret” trail is great for hikers and off-road bicyclists, and even those on horseback from the nearby equestrian center.

BEACH BASICS BEACH SAFETY TIPS The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring that Surf City’s beaches remain accident-free. Here are safety tips developed by the lifeguards in conjunction with the US Lifesaving Association. For more information, visit USLA.org. Check on Conditions. Before entering the water, ask lifeguards about conditions. Never Swim Alone. Use the buddy system so someone will always know where you are. Swim Sober! Alcohol increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability. Know Your Skill Level. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, especially on rough days. And stay ashore if you’re a nonswimmer. Don’t Panic in Rip Currents. Don’t try to swim directly back to shore. Calm yourself, then swim parallel to shore until the current eases and you can return to the beach. Swim Near Staffed Lifeguard Towers. Our lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much safer if they know where you are. Stay in Designated Areas. Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and piers too. Do the Stingray Shuffle. Shuffle your feet to scare away the occasional stingray.

SURF CITY USA SHUTTLE » Operating mid-June through Labor Day Weekend, this complimentary weekend shuttle program offers 5 stops throughout Huntington Beach. Check SurfCityUSAShuttle.com for the schedule and route map plus additional service dates such as during the Fourth of July and US Open of Surfing events. Friday and Saturday: 10am-10pm, Sunday: 10am – 8pm Extend a Hand Out in front of you in shallow breaking water when diving, body surfing, or wiping out on a surfboard. Don’t Dig Deep Holes.
