Spotlight Greg Wallace, President, Instant Jungle Instant Jungle International was established in 1980 and began as a company specializing in interior plant design, installation and maintenance. Customers included many hotels, restaurants and corporate offices throughout Southern California. Today, the company is a full-service wholesale/retail nursery that provides interior and exterior design, installation, and maintenance for residential, commercial and hospitality clients. Although they specialize in tropical foliage, Instant Jungle offers an extensive catalog of traditional plants and customized silk creations. Here, president Greg Wallace talks trends and creating living art.
Q. How has Instant Jungle evolved over the years? A. We began as an interior plant installation and maintenance company. Over the years we have grown and evolved by adding departments to serve new landscape markets. We realized there was a need for exterior plants and design, which is when we started growing large specimen plants. This led to us utilizing our interior and exterior plants to create environments for short-term rentals. In 1990, we implemented a silk department for creating beautiful faux plants for placement in areas that wouldn’t accommodate live plants. About 5 years ago we began creating living walls and have perfected the installation/design and maintenance of these as well. Q. What are some design trends influencing your company right now? A. The living wall phenomenon has really taken off. The possibilities are endless and are being used in both residential and commercial interior or exterior applications. We will hold our clients hand throughout the entire process beginning with design, installation and follow up through weekly maintenance. Properly maintaining the walls is vital to ensuring their success overtime. Q. Tell us about a recent project you are especially proud of. A. We are very proud of all of our installations, but the last living wall we installed into the Ritz Carlton in Orlando, Florida is especially unique. It was a two-sided wall installation that was arched to create a beautiful privacy screen inside of their Spa. It might be the best one yet, it is amazing to see how new ideas are creating innovative living art.

GREAT ROOM The transformation of this 1960 North Tustin, ranch style house to a contemporary farmhouse style home was accomplished by blending contemporary elements, with rustic and industrial features. From the white shaker cabinets with oil rub bronze cabinet hardware, to the focal point ceiling-height mortar-washed brick and reclaimed wood mantel fireplace. Bi-folding dining room doors open into the backyard creating a more open, fun and functional indoor-outdoor area that is centered around a 10-person dining table that is perfect for entertaining yet is functional for daily family use. Old World oak hardwood floors and industrial glass and metal light fixtures round out this uniquely blended design. Our vision at Jess Jones Design Group is to create and curate timeless and cohesive spaces that incorporate beautiful yet functional aesthetics, while providing the highest level of services, products and finishes. This Guest Bathroom was transformed from a dark, cavern-like space with no natural light to a bright and glamourous retreat by the skillfull use of design and materials. Known for her innovative design aesthetic, Deirdre chose a tonal white and gray marble and placed it in a variety of intricate patterns throughout the space with the goal of creating textural interest and visually opening up the small room. She also used a highly waxed Venetian plaster in the palest of gray with mother of pearl accent on the walls and ceiling, sleek chrome fixtures and touches of crystal in the lighting to add some sparkle. A curvy mirror over a custom designed vanity finished in gray completed the desired look. The seamless result leads the eye through the light-reflected room and gives a feeling of spacious, serene luxury. Whether Deirdre is designing a single room or a from-the-ground-up custom home, attention to fine detail, expert project management and unsurpassed client service are the hallmarks of her firm.

The floor, a design that blends marble, terracotta, and hard woods. A morning kitchen features a coffee center, with dual refrigerator drawers and microwave hiding inside built-in cabinetry. A luxurious spa tub couples with a frameless shower, alongside a built-in bench seat of white marble, and marble walls. On the opposite side, his and her sinks on either side of a large, built-in armoire that hides a lighted, vanity mirror, pull-out desktop, medicine cabinet, electric outlets, a television, and generous, vertical pull-out toiletry selves next to each sink, keeping everything you need right at your fingertips and never having to clutter the countertops.

Our clients’ design mantra was an edited “calm, rich and eyes to the view” for the total renovation of this original 1960’s 2117 s.f. space. A Los Angeles-based couple sold their Pasadena estate in preference of a pied-a-terre in the storied Sierra Towers building in West Hollywood. The glamour and convenience of high-rise living on the Sunset Strip with spectacular views from their 17th floor corner unit provides an exciting lifestyle change. An open floorplan with expansive views from every room was designed and implemented by the clients’ builder, including retractable glass doors to capture the terrace as additional living space. The new palette, finish selections, dramatic decorative lighting, Stark area rugs, furnishings and accessories are tactile and softly contemporary, complementing the interior architecture as well as lifestyle of the owners. A continuity of materials and finishes maintain the open living concept. Subtle wallcoverings enhance every wall that isn’t paneled with bleached rift white oak. Her love of everything “Alice in Wonderland” fueled the creativity for principal designer Gigi Harris to transform her bedroom from a dark, hard-to-maneuver space that lacked storage and functionality into an elegant, whimsical and fun haven, customized for her individual needs. “Kai” means continuous. “Zen” means improvement. Inside the restaurant, diners are met with an instant showstopper: a waterfront view. The open floor plan and full-height windows surrounding guests direct their gaze to the harbor and its many vessels docked outside. A coral motif runs throughout the beautiful space, outfitted with cream and tan leather upholstered booths, a mix of porcelain tile and wood flooring and a unique patterned metal ceiling. A glass wall wraps around the immaculate kitchen giving diners a view of its intense atmosphere.

This open, airy California kitchen feels like a sophisticated mix of “elegant cottage” with a twist of “French farmhouse.” The pale creamy color throughout creates an atmosphere of peace and tranquility. Not only was the original décor stuck in the ‘80s, a large peninsula and oddly placed island created a traffic maze, barriers to the family room and left little space for a breakfast area. The goal was to accommodate the next generation, including three little boys under four, and still reflect the clients’ passion for modern styling. The peninsula was removed and one long island was created. This now allows mom and dad to keep an eye on busy toddlers, provides work surfaces for multiple tasks and incorporates dine-in seating for six. Dark wood floors surround an elegant mix of neutrals, including contrasting dark and light cabinets and countertops. Three sleek Italian silver-glass light fixtures provide a “wow” factor.
