WELCOME TO SURF CITY USA

It Starts Here We hold Huntington Beach near and dear to our hearts here at Vans. The families, business owners, and local athletes continue to make all of us here at Vans feel welcome in the city, as they have for decades. Welcome Bienvenido Bienvenue Willkommen Bem Vinda Chào mừng Velkommen Benvenuto Välkommen

This community’s surf and skate culture holds a special place within Vans’ rich history. Huntington Beach’s advocacy of surfing, skating, and BMX is a testament to our action sports roots, beginning in a small custom shoe shop over 50 years ago. We’re a perfect fit in the Surf City USA community. Huntington Beach is home to the Vans U.S. Open of Surfing, with its nine glorious days filled with events featuring hundreds of world-class athletes riding the waves in competition next to the Huntington Beach Pier. If you want to soak up some sun at the end of summer and get a feel for the spirit that makes Surf City so alluring, then join us at the next U.S. Open! Surf City USA is also home to the Vans “Off The Wall” Skatepark, —a full city block of skating utopia, and it’s right in the heart of skateboarding culture. Want to skate a 40-foot, double-kinked handrail or a volcano? Huntington Beach helped us make it happen. We have been showered with an endless amount of support since our humble beginnings. Together, Vans and Huntington Beach will continue to be an iconic partnership for Southern California culture. Thank you, Huntington Beach! Steve and Kristy Van Doren

Visit Huntington Beach dedicates the 2018/19 Guide to local pastor, legend, and 2016 Surfers’ Hall of Famer, Blaine Hiroshi “Sumo” Sato, whose legacy of community caring and humanitarianism deeply touched this surf community. While his big grin can no longer be seen while charging the north side of the Pier on his colossal 12-foot longboard, his aloha spirit in the local surfing community of HB lives on. “Sumo’s…the kind of man our world needs more of.” — Aaron Pai Surfing Hall of Fame Founder Huntington Surf & Sport owner

DREAM & DO

10 WAYS A TRIP TO HUNTINGTON BEACH, CA WILL SURPRISE YOU | BY KELLY BRYANT, Matador Network

Sun, surf, and sand. Beach vibes and a laid-back lifestyle. If you want to put a pin in a city that best represents iconic California, all signs point to Huntington Beach—which rightfully touts itself as Surf City USA. Yes, you’ll find killer waves and sun-kissed beaches here, along with all of the luxuries Orange County has to offer, only without pretense or attitude (forget what you see on Real Housewives of OC—Huntington Beach folks are the real deal). But that’s just the start. Pack your bathing suits and board shorts, but don’t forget a pair of hiking shoes and a growler—you know, just in case you run into some surprises along the way. For the full article: https://www.surfcityusa.com/blog/post/10ways-a-trip-to-huntington-beach-ca-will-surprise-you/

1. YOUR DOG MIGHT LOVE IT HERE MORE THAN YOU. If all dogs go to heaven, they’re probably going to Huntington Dog Beach. This stretch of sand sits along the Pacific Coast Highway (PCH) between Seapoint Avenue and 21st Street, and it’s a great chance for Spot to stretch her legs and snag some play time with other beachlovin’ dogs while you catch some sun. And extra time along the PCH is never a bad thing.

2. THE BEST DAYS START WITH SOME SUGAR.

3. THERE’S SIMPLICITY IN SIGHTSEEING.

4. KIDS ARE ENCOURAGED TO GET A LITTLE MUDDY.

If there’s one local’s tip you get from reading this piece, it should be to start your day at Sugar Shack Café, in downtown HB. The vibes here are super mellow. Surf shops, open-air restaurants, skaters and joggers, miles of sand—and the Sugar Shack Café epitomizes this Huntington Beach feel. Here, breakfast is served all day and with good reason: It’s their specialty. This family-owned joint does all of the AM delicacies one could possibly want, from breakfast burritos to French toast.

Touristy as it may sound, you can’t visit this SoCal spot without a stop at the Huntington Beach Pier. You could, technically, but that would be depriving yourself of a quintessential HB moment. Don’t let that happen. For starters, the pace feels slower and simpler walking along the 1,850-foot concrete landing. Grab a shake at Ruby’s Surf City Diner, scout out your favorite busker, or rent fishing essentials to try your hand at casting a line.

Got kids? Then pack an extra set of clothes for the day. Huntington Central Park is home to Adventure Playground, a primitivelooking section of the park that lets kids ages 5–12 live out all of their muddy dreams. Like a real-life Tide commercial. There’s a mudslide prime for skidding, a small pond for rafting, and plenty of raw materials — like plywood — to build one’s very own fort (and to build some skills).

PRINCE CHARTERS’

5. YES, YOU CAN EAT CHEESECAKE AT A SPA.

6. WE’VE IMMORTALIZED OUR CULTURE.

7. IT’S NOT ALL ABOUT MAKING WAVES…

Because nothing says zen like eating dessert through the hole in a massage table. Fine, fine, fiiine — that’s a joke…but only barely. Pacific Waters Spa, located in the Hyatt Regency Huntington Beach, is a Mediterranean-inspired space that evokes a feeling of calm the minute you walk through its doors. The Aarna Spa, not far from Main St., also spells luxury. Whatever you schedule, leave time to ascend the glassencased staircase to the rooftop, over-theocean lounge and grab a drink.

Dude. Even if you’re not one to take to the waves yourself, visit the International Surfing Museum. It’s home to the world’s largest surfboard — this bad boy managed to carry 66 people on a wave for 12 whole seconds on June 20, 2015. You’re witnessing a legend in its own time. While here, also check out the museum’s new Surf 2 Skate exhibit. It showcases local SoCal legends and vintage boards of both the surf and skate variety.

Surf City, sure, but if waves aren’t totally your thing, take advantage of the calmer waters in Huntington Harbour and try your hand at SUPing. You can rent everything you need at OEX Sunset Beach — and if you’re a first-timer, they offer both lessons and group tours. You’ll work your core, test your balance, and get a photo-worthy view of both the boats sharing the waterway and those beautiful beach houses. Check out one of Prince Charters’ private boat tours. Captain Doug will take the wheel (err, helm) while you literally float on the Pacific on a private booze cruise.

BOLSA CHICA ECOLOGICAL RESERVE

RIIP BEER CO.

LOT 579 IN PACIFIC CITY

8. …AND WE DO INLAND, TOO.

9. THE BEER’S AS GOOD AS THE VINO.

10. EVERYTHING TASTES BETTER BY THE OCEAN.

Huntington Beach proper provides some truly gorgeous scenery, but dig deeper at the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve and you’ll find some seriously stunning wetland habitats. We’re talking mudflats, coastal dunes, freshwater marshes, and tons of views you had no idea were hiding in Southern California. If you’re a bird lover, keep your phone or camera ready to snap some pictures of the many feathery creatures that live within the reserve.

For a state largely known for its wine, California also brings it in terms of the fine art of craft beer. Four Sons Brewing generates some delicious options—try their Surf City Pale Ale for immediate transport to the tropics. And while their core beers are fixtures in the taproom, seasonal releases mix things up. Another to watch out for is The Dude’s Brewing Co. Go for Grandma’s Pecan English Style Brown (you know, just like grandma used to make). Riip Beer Company is another local brewer, and they take it up one very, very convenient and important notch: They deliver.

Imagine being on an island, okay? Now imagine someone walks up to you—as you’re watching the ocean advance and retreat on the sand—and asks what you’d like for lunch. You can have anything. That’s what it’s like dining at LOT 579 in Pacific City. Grab a latte or a cold one, depending on what time of day it is. Pre-game with an Aussie meat pie from Pie Not and then live out The American Dream with one of their epic burgers. Of course, there’s plenty of veg, seafood, and pizza options, too. And then Popbar (customizable gelato on a stick?!) and Petals & Pop for dessert and champagne. SURFCIT YUSA.COM • 23

TIMELINE

#SURFCITYUSA THE BIRTH OF THE LOCAL SURF AND SKATE CULTURES It began with locals shredding it up in the surf and rolling along city streets on boards made of discarded wood. It evolved into action sports with world-class competitions that captivate the masses. Here’s a look at how it all happened.

1930s - 1940s

1914

Surfing influences what later becomes the quintessential California style. Board shorts evolve from frayed cut-offs. Locals popularize white tees, beach-ready shoes, and hats to cover wet hair.

Locals play with boards in the surf, calling it “wave riding.” But it is Irish-Hawaiian waterman George Freeth who is the first to surf the Huntington Beach Pier.

1920s

@RYAN_SCOTT

@MIKEHARRISVISUALS

The Hawaiians arrive in Huntington Beach and Olympian Duke Kahanamoku is among them. He surfs the pier on an 11-foot board. Inspired locals begin crafting boards from old telephone poles.

1990s

Huntington Beach officially becomes Surf City USA. Locals know it’s only a matter of time before the rest of the world embraces the moniker they’ve been using since the birth of SoCal’s surf culture.

24 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2018/19

2000s

Skateboarding goes global and is featured on ESPN’s Extreme Games. Today, it’s an almost $5 billion industry with over 11 million skateboarders around the world. The Vans U.S. Open of Surfing is now a nineday event attracting half a million people to Huntington Beach.

2014

Huntington Beach celebrates 100 Years of Surfing.

1950s

1970s

Southern Californians invent “sidewalk surfing”—aka skateboarding—nailing metal roller skate wheels to a board. In the late 1950s, surfboard shapers and small surf businesses set up shops along Main Street. The first West Coast Surfing Championship is held in 1959. It later becomes the U.S. Open of Surfing.

During a California drought, skaters discover that dry swimming pools are perfect for stunt skateboarding. Riding the curved bottoms is like surfing a wave—but on land. Hungry for more, skaters move to the streets in search of rails and walls.

1960s

Jan and Dean sing about sidewalk surfing on American Bandstand in 1964, teaching Dick Clark’s live audience how to “grab the rail.” Vans creates its iconic deck shoes, with sticky soles perfect for skateboarding. The 1964 West Coast Surfing Championship is broadcast on ABC’s Wide World of Sports, and in 1966, the surf film The Endless Summer is released worldwide.

2015

To celebrate over 100 years of surfing history, locals set two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS, one for the ‘Most people riding a Surfboard,’ and one for the ‘Largest Surfboard’, with 66 people on a giant 42foot board surfing a 12-second wave into history.

2017

Another GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS is set. This one is for the world’s largest paddle-out, with 511 surfers taking to their boards and paddling out to form a circle next to the Huntington Beach Pier.

2018

With skateboarding and surfing set to take the world stage for the first time at the Tokyo 2020 Summer Olympics, Vans Off The Wall Skatepark in Huntington Beach adds new terrain—similar to what will be used in the Olympics—for gold medal hopefuls.

BEACHES

Feel the Sand Between Your Toes Surf City USA is home to five beaches—each with its own vibe. 1 SUNSET BEACH It’s the charming California beach town many dream about. Stretching 1.5 miles (2.4km) from Anderson Street to Warner Avenue, it features one of the widest beaches in Southern California. Surfing the Swells HERE’S WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW AND WHERE YOU OUGHT TO GO BEFORE HITTING THE WAVES.

Legends of the Sport Huntington Beach International Surfing Museum pays tribute to the watermen who helped make surfing what it is today.

@MIKEHARRISVISUALS

Founded by local surfers, this museum holds a special place in our hearts. Just a short walk up Main Street from downtown, it’s filled with all things surfing—from memorabilia to art to the world’s largest surfboard, which was instrumental in earning Surf City USA GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS. Snap a selfie in front of the big board—and don’t forget to hashtag it #BigBoardHB #SurfCityUSA. Exhibits focusing on surf and skate history rotate throughout the year, and the museum also plays host to live music sessions. The museum is open noon to 5 p.m. every Tuesday through Sunday. (It’s closed on Monday.) Admission is $3. 411 Olive Avenue, north of Main Street. 714.465.4350, SurfingMuseum.org

A Wild Ride Catch Surf City USA’s endless waves or skate the iconic roads of where skateboarding began. Surf City USA is serious about fun, and there is no better place to experience authentic Southern California surfing and skateboarding culture than Huntington Beach. Find a spot on the Huntington Beach Pier and watch surfers paddle out to meet the waves, just as they did 100 years ago. At the corner of Main and Pacific Coast Highway a bronze Duke Kahanamoku statue stands guard, as if he’s watching the break. Just steps away, the Surfing Walk of Fame and nearby Surfers’ Hall of Fame on Main Street pay homage to legends of the sport. This is where skateboarding all began, with skaters showing off in emptied backyard pools. Show us your skills at Vans Off The Wall Skatepark and shred the metal rail saved from a long-gone skateboarder’s bowl at Huntington Beach High School. Who grabs a board to ride a wave through 100-foot pylons or hurls down a metal rail at 80-plus mph? We do.

Surf’s Up! Few surfers take to the water without first checking the forecast from Huntington Beach-based Surfline. And now, Surfline is partnered with Amazon. “Alexa, ask Surfline for the full surf report at Huntington Beach.” Surfline.com LIVE HB CAM Want to watch the scene at the pier from the comfort of your home? Three for the Book A trio of GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS proves that Surf City USA locals rule the waves.

Talk about bragging rights. Surf City USA won two GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS honors in 2015 and another in 2017. First, in 2015, Surf City USA made the record book for having the World’s Largest Surfboard—it measures 42 feet and weighs 1,300-plus pounds. (That’s the big board displayed outside the International Surfing Museum.) Then, the 66 people who climbed on that board and rode a wave for 12 seconds earned the honor of Most People Riding A Surfboard At Once. Then in June of 2017, more than 500 surfers held hands in the ocean for the largest recorded paddle-out Circle of Honor, putting us in the GUINNESS WORLD RECORDS book again. Surfers gathered for a parade down Main Street wearing black, red, green, blue and yellow, the colors of the Olympic rings, to celebrate the addition of surfing to the 2020 Olympics. #HBISM

COURTNEY CONLOGUE

Born to Surf Huntington Beach’s Kanoa Igarashi was only 5 years old when he started surfing. When he was 18, he became the youngest surfer in the 2016 World Surf League’s Men’s Championship Tour, competing against 33 of the best watermen in the world. And in 2017, the hometown hero won the U.S. Open of Surfing. But he’s been a global celebrity for years, since he starred in a reality TV show airing in Japan (he was only 11), making him a celebrity on the streets of Tokyo, where he’ll be heading in 2020 to compete for Japan in the first Olympic surfing competition. @kanoaigarashi

Surfer Girl She’s the kind of home-grown athlete that little surfer girls dream of being one day. Courtney Conlogue ranks among the best female surfers in the world, and her home break is Huntington Beach. She began surfing at age 4, and by the time she was 14, she’d already won a surfing gold medal as a member of the U.S. Team in the X Games. Courtney won the biggest competition in the United States at the Hurley U.S. Open of Surfing at age 17. And locals can’t wait to see what she accomplishes next. @courtneyconlogue (Instagram) @neonboho (Twitter)

Bold as Love It’s not uncommon to spot former pro surfer and surfboard shaper Rocky McKinnon out in the water teaching kids and adults alike how to ride the waves. But if you’re lucky, you might just see him hauling his four-seat outrigger canoe to the south side of the Huntington Beach Pier. It’s part of his Bold as Love program, which treats people to a thrilling free ride in his custom-built outrigger and is accessible for the special needs community so everyone can ride the waves. To check outrigger session dates and reserve a spot, visit McKinnon’s Facebook page and follow him on Instagram. @boldasloveoutriggersurfcanoe (Facebook) @boldasloveosc (Instagram)

The surfers competing for waves at this year’s Vans U.S. Open of Surfing might also be on the podium at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo. Twenty men and 20 women from around the globe will compete for the gold. Among them, Huntington Beach’s Kanoa Igarashi—Vans U.S. Open of Surfing 2017 champion, who announced he will compete in KANOA IGARASHI 2020 at Shidashita Beach, or Shida, about 40 miles outside of Tokyo. Legendary surfer Duke Kahanamoku advocated for surfing in the Olympics. His Olympic gold medals in the Stockholm 1912 and Antwerp 1920 games were in swimming, but he longed to compete as a surfer. In 1923, he asked the International Olympic Commission to include surfing and now, a century later, his dream is becoming a reality for a new generation of Olympic athletes.

VANS OFF THE WALL SKATEPARK

Skateboarding Rolls Onto the World Stage A Language All Our Own WE’VE GOT A WAY WITH WORDS, ESPECIALLY WHEN WE’RE STOKED. HERE’S A FEW OF OUR FAVORITES.

Alley-oop: A skateboarder trick in which your body spins in one direction while your board is rotating the opposite way. Brah or Bruh: Not “bro.” Use liberally. California: This is the one word we use in its entirety. Never “Cali.” Dude: Anyone—guy or girl. Epic: Anything mega rad or massively cool.

Skateboarding—a sport that sprung onto the Southern California scene in the late1950s—is taking a world tour as athletes prepare for the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo. It begins in June 2018, when the Vans Park Series Pro Tour kicks off in São Paulo, Brazil, with the inauguration of South America’s first-and-only VPS-certified park terrain course, built and donated by Vans. The public São Paulo course will host four men’s and three women’s global qualifiers for the Vans Park Series Pro Tour,

which will span five countries on four continents. Vans added two more qualifying events to create park terrain skateboarding’s first Women’s World Championship global qualifying series. The Pro Tour hits Huntington Beach on Aug. 3, 2018— showcasing athletes we’ll likely see at the 2020 Olympics—then moves on to Paris-Chelles, France, in September, finishing with the official World Championships in China in October. #VansParkSeries, VansParkSeries.com

Goofy: Skating with your left foot on the tail of the board. Green room: If you’re riding inside the barrel of a wave, you’re in it. Grom: A young surfer or child—also, “grommie” or “gremmie.” Kodak courage: Pushing the limits when it’s time for photos. O.C.: Orange County. Never say “the O.C.” PCH: Pacific Coast Highway—saying the full name is too much work. Rad: Awesomeness Ripper: A really good skateboarder or surfer. Santa Anas: Our seasonal winds and the source of all sneezing.

@ERIC-M-CWIERTHY

Send it: To go nuts without regard to your own safety. Skadoozing: Skateboarding with style. Stoked: We say this when we’re excited. “I’m stoked to go to the beach!” 32 • HUNTINGTON BE ACH 2018/19

He’s living the dream with Ola Mexican Kitchen in Pacific City, with business partner, Tony Andrews. You’ll find authentic dishes like queso fundido, fresh ceviche, and an array of tacos—from lobster to carnitas. For a refreshing innovation, try the beet and watermelon salad with a craft margarita. Beach Safety Tips The Huntington Beach Marine Safety Division’s lifeguards are dedicated to ensuring that Surf City’s beaches remain accident free. Here are safety tips developed by the lifeguards in conjunction with the U.S. Lifesaving Association. For more information, visit USLA.org • Check on conditions. Before entering the water, ask lifeguards about water conditions. • Never swim alone. Use the buddy system so someone will always know where you are. • Swim sober. Alcohol is not allowed on the beaches in California and increases the potential for drowning by lowering body temperature, encouraging risky behavior, and impairing physical ability. • Know your skill level. Don’t overestimate your swimming ability, especially on rough days. Stay ashore if you’re a non-swimmer. • Don’t panic in rip currents. Swim parallel to the shore until you’re out of the current and then swim to the beach. • Swim near staffed lifeguard towers. Our lifeguards are the best. You’ll be much safer if they know where you are. • Stay in designated areas. Portions of the beach are set aside for swimming or surfing. Keep a safe distance from jetties and piers. • Do the stingray shuffle. Shuff le your feet to scare away stingrays. • Extend a hand out. Extend your hand in front of you in shallow breaking water when diving, body surfing or wiping out on a surfboard. • Don’t dig deep holes. Deep holes can cave in and create hazards for small children. Please refill any holes you dig. • Do not bring glass to the beach. Remember, people walk in their bare feet at the beach.

FINAL WORD

The Dream Lives On

I was thinking about how great it is here just the other day. My car’s sunroof was open—it was perfect sunny weather—and I had a burger and fries on the seat next to me as I drove through Huntington Beach. Just one of those moments. Growing up, my family rented a beach house nearby. I’d fill a pickup truck with surfboards and paddleboards and head to the Huntington Beach Pier. It looked like those images we’d see on television: zinc oxide on noses, everyone barely dressed, and miles of ocean. It is Surf City USA! Huntington Beach is comfortable and welcoming. We have miles of open, unobstructed beach, with full access for everyone. There’s great surf, a true beach culture, a real car culture, history, and a legacy. Huntington Beach is just totally different than 99.99 percent of the rest of the world. We have a true Southern California attitude—just laid back and more humorous. My favorite spots in Huntington Beach? The pier and the beach. You really don’t need much more. Our beach has got the goods! — Dean Torrence Dean Torrence was one half of the popular 1960s surf music singing duo Jan and Dean, whose hits include “Surf City,” “Little Old Lady from Pasadena,” “Popsicle,” “Dead Man’s Curve,” and “Ride the Wild Surf"—classic tunes reflecting SoCal’s iconic culture.
