Who We Are Our School District
OCPS dates back to 1869. The state of Florida passed the first school law, which established Orange County as a school district, to be governed by an appointed board of three members and run by a superintendent. What sets us apart from the rest includes that we:
• Provide the highest quality educational and extracurricular opportunities
• Are nationally recognized for instructional and operational excellence
• Have state-of-the-art facilities and are leaders in digital learning
• Prepare students for career and college in a global environment
• Proudly serve a diverse community
We believe every student should have access to a high-quality education regardless of where they live or where they’re from; and that by developing and cultivating strong relationships with our families and the community, together, we can ensure the success of our students.
Logo Standards
The official OCPS logo is our primary brand identity. The logo is mandatory on all external communication pieces created and distributed by the district. The official logo consists of two parts: the “blocks monogram” and the “wordmark.” It is also essential that you add alternative text (Alt Text) to any use of the logo on web pages to provide accessibility to readers using voice-assisted software.
The blocks monogram must be used in conjunction with the wordmark but can be used alone in rare occasions when approved. Keep in mind that, depending on the use, the intended audience may or may not know what “O-C-P-S” represents.
Approved Logos
Horizontal logos are preferred and should be used on all apparel. However, vertical logos are acceptable when space requirements don’t accommodate horizontal versions.
EPS files are vector-based for professional printing applications such as Adobe Illustrator. PNG files are suitable for other applications such as web, Word or PowerPoint. Unlike JPG files, PNG files have a transparent background, which is useful on colored backgrounds.

Department Identifiers
OCPS departments are not permitted to have their own “logo” except in unique circumstances approved by the Communications Division.
Outward-facing communications or collateral produced to reach the general public (parents, community members, media, etc.) is strictly limited to use of the OCPS district logo.
For internal communications, it may be beneficial for a department to selfidentify. When this is necessary, the following examples show the approved format for all department identifiers.
Before requesting a specific department identifier, consider the following questions:
• Who is your primary audience, internal or external?
• When you communicate, are you only representing your department or OCPS as a whole?
• Does your unit require uniforms or a company vehicle?
See the OCPS Brand and Style Resources page near the end of this stylebook for information on how to request a department identifier.

School Mascots & Logos
It’s crucial that school logos and slogans comply with trademark and copyright laws. School logos cannot violate copyright or intellectual property rights (i.e. professional or collegiate sports team logos). Schools whose logos are found to be in violation will be required to make necessary modifications to their logos. Fortunately, the district graphics team can provide these services free of charge.
Logo Changes/Updates
The district graphics team can work with school administrators to develop/redesign school logos. Once logos are finalized, schools will receive a custom style guide detailing proper use of logos, school colors and fonts.
Schools may choose to work with professional third-party design agencies in lieu of having their logo created by an OCPS graphic artist, BUT the OCPS Public Relations Department will have final approval on any logos created.
Schools are required to provide the graphics team with all school logo files in various formats for storage on the official OCPS graphics server. New logo files can be sent to Graphics@ocps.net.
See the OCPS Brand and Style Resources on page 33 for information on how to request a new or refreshed mascot or logo.

The graphics department can assist with design for department signage. See the OCPS Brand and Style Resources section on page 33 for information on how to request signage.
Apparel Standards
Logo Placement
As part of overall OCPS brand management, it’s important to achieve a consistent use of the OCPS logo, especially on apparel.
When wearing apparel, you represent the district and ONLY the official OCPS logo should be used.
If necessary to identify an individual department, that department name should be embroidered or screen printed on the right side of the shirt, opposite the OCPS logo on the left.
Another option is to use an OCPS name tag as seen above.
To order name tags, please submit a graphics request form at https://bit.ly/OCPSGraphicsRequest

Writing Style
OCPS Voice and Tone
The voice for OCPS communications is professional, compelling and welcoming. We recommend refraining from academic jargon unless essential and keeping your messages clear and factual. Before composing, ask yourself these questions:
• What is the primary message I want to convey?
• Who is my audience?
• What is the purpose of this communication?
The tone we use depends on the audience. For instance, we may be more fun and casual on social media, but more formal in news releases.
OCPS Writing Style
The OCPS Communications Division follows AP Style, which was created by the Associated Press for journalists. In the last 50 years, AP Style has become the leading reference for most forms of public-facing corporate communication. Below you will find guidelines that are specific to OCPS.
Academic Degrees
Use lowercase and use an apostrophe for bachelor’s degree, specialist’s degree, master’s in psychology, etc.
Use abbreviations such as B.A., B.S., M.A., M.S., M.Ed., Ph.D., Ed.D. with a person’s name.
Dr. Jane Smith or Jane Smith, Ed.D. — use Dr. or Ed.D., but not both.
Acronyms and Abbreviations
Remember that not everyone is familiar with educationrelated acronyms. When writing, it is a best practice to spell out the program or title on first reference, followed by an abbreviation in parenthesis.
Community Partnership Schools
The name of each school must be followed with A Community Partnership School.
• Evans High School, A Community Partnership School
• OCPS Academic Center for Excellence, A Community Partnership School (Use OCPS ACE on second reference.)
Departments
Use lowercase for academic department names, except for words that are proper names. Capitalize all other department names.
• the history department
• the math department
• Payroll department
• Human Resources department
District Name
Capitalize the school system’s official name: Orange County Public Schools.
Variations of the name such as the Orange County public school system, Orange County school system or Orange County school district are acceptable, but each word should not be capitalized.
Example:

“Orange County public schools” is correct when referring to all of the schools in the district.
Example:
All Orange County public schools have guidance counselors.
Capitalize a school’s full name, but lowercase elementary schools, middle schools, etc. if two or more schools are mentioned.
Examples: The meeting will be held at Oak Ridge High School.
Palm Lake, Ventura, Rock Springs and MetroWest elementary schools have new laptops for their students.
K-8 Schools
“K-8” is only part of school names that have a magnet middle school. All others are {School Name} School without a level designation. Examples include:
Arbor Ridge K-8
Windy Ridge K-8
Audubon Park School
Blankner School
Lake Como School
Wedgefield School
Orange Technical College
Orange Technical College has five campuses:
Orange Technical College is used alone to refer to the campus in Orlando adjacent to the Ronald Blocker Educational Leadership Center. If necessary to distinguish between campuses, it may be referred to as the main campus.
Orange Technical College - Avalon
Orange Technical College - East
Orange Technical College - South
Orange Technical College - West
OTC also has two branches:
Orange Technical College - Apopka
Orange Technical College - Eatonville
School Board
The official name for our school board is the School Board of Orange County, Florida.
Orange County School Board or School Board of Orange County are also acceptable.
When listing board member names, list the chair first, followed by the vice chair, with remaining members listed numerically by district.
The current list of School Board members and the correct spellings of their names are available on the School Board page on the internet. Visit: https://bit.ly/OCPSBoardMembers
Capitalize Orange County School Board -or- School Board of Orange County.
Example: The Orange County School Board meets every second and fourth Tuesday.
Lowercase school board or board if used without the county designation.
Example: The school board will meet at 5 p.m. to discuss the new high school.
Use title and full name on first reference: Superintendent Maria F. Vazquez, Ed.D.
On second reference, use Dr. Vazquez.
Titles
Capitalize formal titles when they are used immediately before an individual’s name.
Example: School Board Chair Teresa Jacobs
Lowercase titles when they are used after an individual’s name.
Example: Teresa Jacobs, school board chair
