A Guide to Compassionate Support for People Living with Dementia

ementia affects not only memory but also cognitive abilities, making daily tasks more difficult for those living with the condition. Here are some essential tips for providing compassionate care for individuals with dementia.

Establish a Routine: Creating a consistent daily routine can offer comfort to loved ones living with dementia. Stick to regular mealtimes, sleep schedules and daily activities to provide structure and familiarity and reduce anxiety.

Communicate with Clarity: Use short sentences and simple explanations. Don’t argue or contradict and be patient. Allowing the person ample time to process information can help avoid agitation.

Create a Safe Environment: Keep the living space safe by removing tripping hazards, securing furniture and installing handrails. Labeling key areas can also aid in navigation and reduce confusion.

Encourage Independence: important to assist when needed, encourage your loved one to perform tasks independently. This fosters a sense of accomplishment and helps maintain their cognitive and physical abilities.

Engage in Meaningful Activities: in activities your loved one enjoys or used to enjoy. This could include listen ing to music, doing puzzles or reminisc ing through photo albums.

Provide Emotional Support: People with dementia often experience a range of emotions, from frustration to confusion. Offer emotional support by validating their feelings and expressing empathy.

Seek Support: Don't hesitate to seek professional help when necessary. Consult healthcare professionals, dementia specialists or support services to ensure the best possible care for your loved one. Family caregivers can find help for themselves as well through support groups, friends or family members. Taking care of yourself ensures you can provide better care for your loved one.

By implementing these tips, family caregivers can create a supportive and nurturing environment for loved ones with dementia, enhancing their quality of life and fostering a sense of connection and understanding.

How Nerve Renewal Clinics Are Making a Difference in Oklahoma

With five clinics open in the Oklahoma City metro area, a Shawnee location and a Broken Arrow location, Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinics are becoming available to more and more Oklahomans around the state.

“We are dedicated to opening these clinics because of the tremendous help many receive when they are able to regain their mobility and pain relief,” said Tim Bales, owner of Nerve Renewal Neuropathy Clinics. “We have worked hard so that patients with neuropathy can find genuine support with effective treatments without having to travel far from home.”

Peripheral neuropathy happens when the nerves located outside of the brain and spinal cord (peripheral nerves) are damaged. This condition often causes weakness, numbness and pain, usually in the hands and feet. Neuropathy can severely limit daily activities due to pain, numbness, and the constant threat of falls, essentially stealing away the simple pleasures of life.

Falls are a leading cause of physical decline among older adults. According to the Centers for Disease Control, falls among adults 65 and older caused over 38,000 deaths in 2021, making it the leading cause of injury death for that group. In 2021, emergency departments recorded nearly 3 million visits for older adult falls.

The prevalence of neuropathy increases with advancing age. Using data from the 1999-2004 National Health and Nutrition Survey and the 20162017 Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities Study, a recent report estimated that 10.4% of middle-aged adults and between 26.8% and 39.2% of older adults had peripheral neuropathy. It reported that in a large proportion of those suffering, the primary cause is never identified.

Numbness is typically the first symptom of peripheral neuropathy and can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected. It can stem from various causes like diabetes, chemotherapy, or nerve damage from an injury. The symptoms of peripheral

neuropathy can vary widely, ranging from numbness and tingling to severe pain and muscle weakness.

According to the American Geriatrics Society, 65% of seniors with peripheral neuropathy have at least one fall per year, and 30% of those falls resulted in an injury that required hospitalization. In a recent study, the society estimated medical costs attributable to fatal and nonfatal falls was approximately $50.0 billion.

Nerve Renewal’s goal is simple yet profound: to improve Oklahomans’ quality of life by offering convenient and effective treatments without additional medications. At Nerve Renewal, the approach to treating neuropathy involves targeted Neuromodulation. This technique uses high-frequency pulses to block pain signals at their source location in the body, allowing relief without surgery or medication. It has proven effective, with significant pain reduction in 80% of patients. Treatments are personalized and spread over several weeks, ensuring a gradual and steady improvement.

Those who visit Nerve Renewal find more than just medical care; they find a way back to their former selves. The combination of Neuromodulation and nutrient therapy not only provides temporary relief but also fosters lasting health improvements. These treatments help restore balance and reduce the risk of falls, enabling patients to regain their independence. Nerve Renewal’s website is filled with stories of patients from all walks of life who have moved from dependency to leading active, fulfilling lives.

Patients do not need a referral to start. Treatments are covered by most major insurers, including Medicare and Medicaid.

“Each patient’s success at Nerve Renewal contributes to a larger goal” Bales said. “We are committed to changing the narrative around aging and health in Oklahoma. We do more than treat symptoms; we are focused on rebuilding lives and strengthening the community, ensuring seniors can enjoy their lives with dignity and vitality.”

“Depending on the severity of the nerve damage, some patients may have relief after two or three treatments; however, it is important patients complete the full course as recommended since the results are individualized,” said Latrica Dorsey, APRN. “An aspect of the treatment plan includes balance tests and reevaluations to assess the level of improvement.”

To get answers about therapy and insurance coverage before scheduling and initial evaluation, call (405) 645-6468 to speak with the patient intake team. Scheduling an appointment is easy.

Veteran Advocates

SYNERGY HomeCare provides assistance with understanding your VA Benefits. Our office staff members are educated on VA Benefit information including who to call to get involved with VA Healthcare and once involved how to reach their VA PCP or Social Worker.

SYNERGY HomeCare has a deep love and concern for veterans and seeks out opportunities to reach them and serve their needs.

“They are the most loyal people to our country. Their needs must be a priority for us” Weama Kassem, owner said.

Many veterans live on their own and need assistance with basic needs of companionship, keeping their homes tidy, and having someone to check in on them. One of the first veterans I worked with was Thomas Cook.

Upon opening our doors in 2013, we signed on to service our very first Veteran client, Mr. Thomas Cook. Mr. Cook has been an incredible part of the SYNERGY Family, and is still a client to this day! Thomas Cook is a United States Marine Korean War Veteran. He began his overseas Duty in Japan at Iwakuni Air Base and was there for approximately 3 months working in the jet engine repair section for the Marine squadrons that were stationed at Iwakuni. Later, he requested transfer to Vietnam to be where the action was.

He was stationed at Chu Lai Air Base, where he was assigned to short air tactical support. He was put in charge of the two j79-10 jet engines, which ran the catapult. He also took part in the arrestment of all planes that came in with hung ordinance, like bombs, rockets, or anything explosive, which made it very dangerous for the man who had to stand out on the runway and signal the pilot to raise his hook out of the arresting gear. “The happiest day in Vietnam

was when I got my orders to go home. I boarded The Proud Bird with the golden tail Continental Airways. I remember when the plane touched off the runway heading home. Everybody in the plane let out a yell! We were all just happy to be going home,” Mr. Cook reminisced.

Later in life, Mr. Cook spent 2002-2003 volunteering at the VAD and completed roughly 1500+ hours driving their van. He would drive to Veterans homes, pick them up, drive them to the VA for their appointments, and then drive them home afterwards. Over time, he changed volunteer work and began driving their big golf cart in the VA parking lot to assist Veterans who had to park from the front doors. He loved volunteering at the VA while he was able to do so.

Weama described a special moment with Thomas when she took him some flowers for Father’s Day.

“I never had flowers before!” he said in astonishment and with a tear in his eye. That was 10 years ago and the beginning of our relationship. We become family to our clients. They deserve the gift of care.

This year our employee of the year has a powerful story of his own. Obed Mungunsi, caregiver said, “SYNERGY HomeCare is committed to providing seniors life affirming care through a show of true compassion and heartfelt empathy. Working in an environment such as this has blossomed my inherent personality as an empath and drives me to go over and beyond to provide top QUALITY care for our esteemed clients, which I always end up transforming into family.”

Obed grew up in Cameroon, one of 10 children. Obed took full responsibility for his grandmother’s care in her elder years. Given his background, we were thrilled to provide Obed with clients. With every paycheck that Obed earns, he sends a portion back home to his village in Cameroon.

Most recently, he funded the complete construction of a 2,642-gallon reservoir in his village which is the

Obed is just one stellar example of heartfelt care. Other clients share rave reviews about their caregivers as well.

“I, Larry Markowski, wanted to take a moment to express my deepest gratitude for the exceptional care and support I received from Aloysius Ateasong, my caregiver from SYNERGY HomeCare. In my time of need, Aloysius was a beacon of hope and compassion, and I feel fortunate to have had him by my side. Aloysius’s dedication, expertise, and kindness have been evident from the start. He went above and beyond to ensure my comfort, safety, and well-being, often exceeding my expectations. His patience, understanding, and gentle manner put me at ease, and I appreciated his willingness to listen and support me in any way he could.

I was impressed by the high level of care and professionalism exhibited

by Aloysius and the entire SYNERGY HomeCare Team. Your agency’s commitment to providing top-notch care is evident in the quality of your caregivers, and I feel lucky to have benefited from your services.

Please extend my heartfelt appreciation to Aloysius and the entire SYNERGY HomeCare Team for their hard work, compassion, and dedication. I am grateful for the care I received and will always be thankful for the positive impact it had on my life.”

Weama shared her thoughts about her caregiver team, “A few times in your life, you’ll find someone who is doing exactly what they were meant to do. When you run into these people, it’s breathtaking, especially in this line of work: home care. It means seeing caregivers form meaningful relationships with their clients and enabling someone’s independence at home.”

We lead the way in serving others with the focused goal of keeping life moving forward by creating a world of care at home for all.

Oklahoma Offices

Weama Kassam, Oklahoma SYNERGY HomeCare owner found her love for caregiving as she grew up among family members of all ages.

“I came to the US 16 years ago and I went to school to get my MBA, but I didn’t even know what Home Care was then. I grew up taking care of the elderly. When I graduated, I thought I would work in the food industry. I got to know a consultant and built a relationship with her. She said, “I feel like with your background this kind of business is where your heart is.” I care for people. The hospitality of the food business was something, but serving the elderly fit my passion. I fell in love with SYNERGY HomeCare when it was very small and had a vision of sharing it with the whole state.

Weama’s son Faisal spent his teenage years helping out or doing his homework in the office and has since joined the family business as Recruiting Manager after earning a degree in business at OU.

Together they are fulfilling Weama’s dream by growing the family business, which has now expanded to cover most of the state. Tulsa now has a physical office location with full-time office staff who are available to answer calls 24/7.

The growth means that we are able to serve more families in need of care.

Peripheral Neuropathy Breakthrough!

“My feet feel like they’re on fire.” “Each step feels like I’m walking through wet paint.”

“I live in constant fear that I’ll fall.”

“I can’t sleep, my hands and feet tingle all night.”

What do all of these people have in common? They suffer from peripheral neuropathy. It’s estimated that more than 20 million people in the United States have peripheral neuropathy. Unfortunately, this figure may be significantly higher as the disease is often misdiagnosed because of its wide array of symptoms.

Toni Twitty of Be Well Acupuncture in Edmond, OK shares this belief, “I’ve been treating neuropathy, in all its various forms, for over a decade and so often my patients come to me because of the symptoms, not because of the diagnosis. They saw one of my television specials, or read a testimonial of another patient and say to themselves, ‘hey, I feel the same thing’.”

Betty M. of Oklahoma City testified to this, “I remember my husband driving me to my consultation, and I saw a woman running just outside our neighborhood. I was so envious - I kept thinking, ‘I would give anything just to walk again.’ My primary care doctor told me my troubles with pain and balance were just symptoms of old age and gave me a prescription. I was so depressed.”

Fortunately, Betty would eventually see a review of Toni Twitty talking about similar symptoms and how she offers a real solution at Be Well Acupuncture. “I just knew I had to see her. She was my last hope.”

“Almost all of our patients come to us with a story similar to Betty’s. They’ve been everywhere else. They’ve been told there is no hope. They’ve been told, “its just part of getting older’,” shares Brooke, a Patient Care Technician at Be Well Acupuncture. “It just breaks my heart but I know that we can help people like Betty, so I’m always so happy when they walk through our door.”

Those diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy often face a grim reality. Western Medicine declares

there is no solution while cost alternative therapies carry huge price tags and offer little to no resolve. This is why Toni Twitty and the staff at Be Well pride themselves on being, ‘the last resort with the best results’.

Peripheral neuropathy is a result of damage to the nerves. This damage is commonly caused by low blood flow in the hands and feet. Low blood flow results in lack of nutrients; the nerves then begin to degenerate and die which causes pain ranging from discomfort to debilitating. Because neuropathy is a degenerative condition, once those nerves begin to deteriorate they will continue to do so until they completely expire, leaving those suffering with crippling balance issues. “In this case, the absence of pain is not a good thing,” shares Dr. Toni. “This usually indicates that your nerves are hanging on by a fragile thread.”

So how exactly is Dr. Toni able to reverse the effects of this degenerative disease? “Acupuncture has been used to increase blood flow for thousands of years. It helps get the nutrients to the nerves. But the real magic happens when I integrate ATP Resonance BioTherapy™. This is tech that was originally developed by NASA to expedite recovering and healing,” said Toni.

“I just can’t say enough about Be Well,” Betty shared joyfully. “My husband and I moved here 3 years ago to be near our grandchildren. I always stayed home because of the pain and discomfort. I couldn’t keep up. Yesterday I walked around the park with him! Next week we’re taking the grandkids with us! I am truly living life these days.”

According to Betty’s test results, she has seen a 74% improvement in pain and functionality, which is on par with a majority of our patents,” shares Paige. “But more important than those test results is the joy she’s expressed being here and hearing about all the amazing

things she’s able to do because she feels great!”

By seamlessly blending the ancient science of acupuncture with unique modern medical solutions, Be Well Acupuncture has achieved a 90% success rate in reversing the effects of neuropathy. Dr. Toni starts each patient with an initial consultation during which a sensory exam is performed. “This not only aids in making a proper diagnosis, but it helps to define just how much nerve damage has occurred,” tells the doctor. “This is important because if a patient has suffered more than 95% damage, there is little that I can do to help them. I’m familiar with the medical miracle, but I know my limits as a practitioner and the limits of my medicine.”

When it comes to treating peripheral neuropathy, regardless of its origin, early detection greatly improves your chances of full recovery.

If you or someone you love is suffering from chronic pain that presents as burning, tingling, or ‘pins and needles,’ or you’ve recently been diagnosed with peripheral neuropathy, it’s important to know that there are options. There is hope.

What is BEMER?

BEMER is about changing the way we think about our health, about challenging our understanding of the human body, and about empowering us to reach optimal physical condition.

Blood flow plays a critical role in our general health. BEMER stimulates healthy muscles to improve and facilitate muscle performance. This stimulation temporarily improves local blood circulation — all in just 8 minutes twice a day!

For more than 20 years, the benefits of BEMER have impacted millions of people around the world. BEMER is an FDA cleared, Class II, consumer medical device that is non-invasive and easy to use.

Out with the Bad, In with the Good

As the blood provides a greater supply of oxygen to the cells, the cells can then transfer carbon dioxide away from the organs via the veins and lymphatics more effectively.

The BEMER Difference

BEMER stands for Bio-Electro-Magnetic-Energy-Regulation. BEMER sends a low intensity pulsed electromagnetic field into the body to safely stimulate healthy muscles which can temporarily increase microcirculation.* Additional benefits from regular use of BEMER may include reduced stress, improved relaxation, optimized physical performance, enhanced muscle conditioning and physical fitness, and a better overall feeling of wellbeing. *

How Does PEMF Therapy Support the Body?

PEMF therapy directly stimulates electrical activity within the muscle tissues that “the field” interacts with. It’s a lot like charging a toothbrush or cell phone wirelessly. The concept works the same within the body. But instead of charging a battery, you’re charging your cells! When your cells are “charged,” they can function at the highest level, allowing you to perform your best and recover faster. BEMER works in concert with your body, enhancing the vitality within.

Patented Signal

Enhanced Oxygen Delivery

As the flow of blood to healthy muscles increases, so does the delivery of oxygen, further strengthening the health, recovery, and performance of the muscle tissue.

The BEMER signal sets a new standard in the industry with its complex, carefully tuned configuration and timing. Nearly two decades of research and development have resulted in BEMER’s unique bio-rhythmically defined signal. This pulsed electromagnetic field is a feat of German engineering that’s protected by multiple worldwide patents and used exclusively by BEMER.

The BEMER Horse-Set

Yes, there is a BEMER for your horse too! The Horse-Set PEMF signal creates biophysical stimulation in the small-caliber precapillary arterioles, increasing blood flow.*

For many patients, the journey from hospital discharge to home can be a daunting one, especially when faced with the challenge of wound care. This is where HealWell Wound Care Solutions steps in, transforming the home recovery experience by providing expert wound care right at the doorstep.

HealWell Home Care Solutions was born from a desire to address a gap in the wound care system. Kari adds, “We wanted to bring expert care to people where they feel safest and most comfortable — their homes. The aim was not just to treat wounds but to support the whole person and their mental well-being.”

HealWell’s model is simple yet profound: deliver top-notch wound care services to patients in their homes.

HealWell employs a range of advanced wound care techniques, from conservative and excisional debridement to the latest in ultrasonic therapy. “We use evidence-based practices to ensure the best outcomes,” explains

Bringing Comfort Home: HealWell’s Approach to Wound Care and Wellness

Kari. “But what truly sets us apart is our focus on the patient’s overall experience. We aim to make them feel empowered and supported.”

Beyond the physical aspect of healing, the mental health benefits of receiving wound care at home are profound. HealWell’s approach reduces anxiety and promotes a sense of normalcy and control. Patients often experience a boost in their mental well-being, knowing they can recover in a familiar, supportive environment.

HealWell also focuses on educating and empowering both patients and their caregivers. “We don’t just treat the wound; we provide knowledge and tools so that families can feel confident in managing care,” says Kari.

HealWell’s mission is clear: to provide compassionate, comprehensive wound care that supports both physical and mental health, all in the comfort of home.

Start Your Day with 92 Nutrients

While working as a motorcycle funeral escort, a car was waved through the procession in the path of Noble Priehs while going 75mph. He was almost killed. He had broken his back in 3 places and required a 6 Level Spinal Fusion. For the next 10 years, he walked using a cane and became overmedicated with Opioids and PTSD prescriptions. The side effects of the medications together not only magnified his pain, anxiety, anger, suicidal thoughts and depression, they multiplied tenfold and he became a recluse. Doctors said he’d never play golf again or have a normal life.

In February of 2013, a friend introduced him to the most nutritious botanical known to man. (Please Google) Moringa Oleifera, The Miracle Tree as seen on the Discovery Channel. One serving of this changed his life. Noble’s pain went from a constant 8 to a Zero. Since that time he has been medication free, does yoga 5-7 days a week, plays golf on a regular basis, plus he is no longer using a cane!

Noble is now on a mission to share his story to empower as many people as possible to take charge of their own health, naturally!

Supermix is the only Moringa Oleifera that has ever been listed in the Physician’s Desk Reference and is proven by science to be up to 40 times stronger than anything on the market today.

Many doctors and health professionals use Supermix and Moringa Premium Detox Tea in place of harmful medications for over 320 diseases (Diabetes, Arthritis, Lupus, High Blood Pressure, Obesity, and Fatigue just to name a few).

Of course, we do not diagnose, prevent, treat or cure any disease, but when you give the body the most nutritious botanical ever discovered known to man it will heal itself.

It is often used as a meal replacement making it cost less than what is already in your current grocery and supplements budget. Plus it comes with a 100% - 30 day money back guarantee, so you have nothing to lose.

SuperMixTM is a delicious , moringa-enriched beverage that utilizes one of the most nutrient-dense botanicals on earth, Moringa oleifera. Please contact Noble for more information or to place your order today!

f you ask any vendor in the craft fair community, the most desired shows to partake in have large crowds, low booth rent, massive advertising and compassionate coordinators. This is exactly what the foundation of The Santa Market was modeled after.

Unhappy with the show choices available, Joan Clarke and Molly Nye decided to start a show of their own. Along with fellow coordinator Megan Nye, they found a few vendors, rented a banquet room at a local hotel, and The Santa Market was born. That one-room show has grown into one of the largest craft shows in the metro. Each year the show has added more vendors, expanded in location and increased in attendance.

By the third year, Molly, Joan and Megan decided that the amount of year-round work that goes into the show should benefit a cause very close to them. Joan’s husband and Megan’s father, Russ, passed away from Alzheimer’s in 2007. Molly suggested they make The Santa Market a fundraiser for the Alzheimer’s Association of Oklahoma. In the fourteen years since, the show has raised over $300,000.00 for Alzheimer’s. It is a Gold Level Sponsor of the OKC Walk to End Alzheimer’s; and in 2015, The Santa Market received the Channel 4 Pay It Forward Award. In 2019, The Santa Market, Inc. was formed and is now a certified 501(c)(3).

The Santa Market is one of the best holiday shopping events of the year. This year it will be held at the OKC State Fair, Park Pavilion Building. While it is three ladies who work tirelessly to run The Santa Market, it could not be done without all the help of the quality vendors, loyal customers, volunteers, sponsors and donors. The organizers call it The Santa Market Family, and we hope you will be a part of it.
