About rien poortvliet Internationally acclaimed Dutch artist Rien Poortvliet considered himself as a drawing storyteller. His drawings told the story, supplemented by a short caption at the most. The oeuvre of Poortvliet can absolutely be called extensive. He became known to the general public with books like: 'He was one of us', 'In my grandfather’s house', 'Dogs', 'Horses' and 'Secrets of the Gnomes'. Although he passed away in 1995, his books remain classics, continuing to enchant both new readers and long-time enthusiasts.

Rien Poortvliet gave full rein to his love for nature, wildlife and animals and his skill in depicting them in all their glory. Boars, hares, deer, foxes, otters, beavers etc., he captured everything in a very realistic drawing or a painting that immediately highlighted his love for nature.

The book was first published in 1976 and the world became enchanted with the simple and diligent ways of these special creatures. Based on Rien Poortvliet's and Wil Huygen's 'scientific' observations, ‘Gnomes’ covers all areas of gnome culture: architecture, education, courtship, medicine, industry, and relationships with other mythical creatures. Now, forty years later, this beautifully illustrated book continues to bring joy to readers of all ages.

about francien van westering Francien can rightfully be called THE cat drawer of The Netherlands. With her precise colour pencil technique, she not only manages to express the appearance of the cats accurately, but also the character. In The Netherlands, her Cat Diary has been in the top three of best sold diaries for more than 20 years.

After she graduated at the Rietveld Academy, Francien van Westering regularly worked for the many magazines of Sanoma Publishing. For 14 years, she wrote and drew a weekly column on the adventures with her cats. Francien also often draws for the German weekly ‘Bild der Frau,’ the English cat magazine ‘Your Cat’ and the Danish family weekly ‘Hjemmet'.

ABOUT janneke brinkman-salentijn Originally, Janneke is a biologist. She knows how to combine her extensive knowledge of plants and flowers with her delicate sense of colour and composition. Janneke’s love for nature is clearly expressed in her watercolours, or, as she says: “The bright, brilliant colours of watercolour paint lens themselves well to display the fresh, delicate and transparent nature of flowers. I hope I can inspire you to enjoy what is really worthwhile and what manifests itself in the vulnerability of the flowers and plants around us.”

Janneke Brinkman is one of the best-known illustrators of The Netherlands. She has been illustrating calendars, diaries and stationery for over twenty years. Next to paper products, her flower watercolour paintings can be found on tableware, bath- and bed textiles, jigsaw puzzles, stamps and numerous other articles. Janneke is also known for her column in MARGRIET, one of the best-read magazines of The Netherlands.

Anton Pieck

About anton pieck Anton Pieck is the best-known Dutch illustrator from the twentieth century. The past, especially the 19th century, inspired Anton Pieck.

Anton Pieck has gained public fame with his drawings for the Efteling, his Christmas cards (‘the winter with ice and snow has my preference’) and the elaborate calendar images.

Romantic irony and comic scenes seemed to suit Pieck perfectly. He had an inexhaustible source of ideas and an eye for detail and nuances. His etchings, engravings, dry needles, wood engravings and lithographs drew the attention of art connoisseurs and fellow artists.

Jan van Haasteren

About jan van haasteren Jan van Haasteren is a Dutch cartoonist. For decades Jan has created highly detailed, colourful and, above all, humorous illustrations. Most of Jan’s fans will immediately search for his trademark – the shark’s fin – featured in every puzzle. But you can also look for other favourite images – Saint Nicholas, The Hands, The Dentures and Jan’s self-portrait which you will find in nearly all of his illustrations.

After graduating at the Art Academy in Rotterdam, Jan’s career took off at an advertising agency and he worked at Toonder Studio’s, the Donald Duck weekly magazine and many others. In the eighties Jan van Haasteren started to collaborate with Royal Jumbo and he designed at least three jigsaw puzzles a year. Last year other products were launched: greeting cards, calendars etc.
