WHY DID YOU APPLY FOR THIS ROLE? This is my second year in the role, so I guess I would have to say because clearly I love it! I applied the first year because of my experience working in Student Activities as a student and wanted to ensure everyone had an amazing experience like I did getting involved in the SU. WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY FOR THE ROLE? It varies depending on the day – some days I will be booking rooms, sorting payments out and doing the day to day admin and other days I’ll be out and about meeting with students and staff to help our Union develop and help our students get the best out of their university experience.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROYAL HOLLOWAY? I choose Royal Holloway because of the community feel this small university has. I grew up in schools where there were less than 10 people in a classroom – so attending a small university where I’d know people as I walked through campus really appealed to me. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CLUB OR SOCIETY? I like all our Societies & Clubs equally, but I suppose if I had to be biased it would be Dance Society, considering I was President in my second year!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SU NIGHT? My favourite SU night is usually Come in Your Socs – it’s a great night where all our Societies go out in their groups, dress up IF YOU COULD ONLY ACHIEVE ONE THING and have an amazing night out! BEFORE LEAVING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Ensure that space on campus is readily DO YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR available for our student groups and FRESHERS? individual students. One of the main Get involved! There are a million and one setbacks to our Societies, Clubs and things to join and everyone wants YOU to Media Outlets is the lack of purpose fit get involved, so don’t be shy, don’t worry space on campus and I hope to work on if you’ve never played lacrosse before or a few projects this year which will combat you’ve never sang a tune in your life – if you are interested have a go, try everything, this issue. that’s what your time at university is for.

Education and Campaigns

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THIS ROLE? I had been involved in the SU for years before I decided to run to be President (Education and Campaigns), the reason why I decided to run for this role was because I wanted to make a difference and change the way things were done at the SU.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO ON CAMPUS? The SU! (am I allowed to say that?) There’s always something happening at the SU, so if you ever have a few hours to spare, come by and say hello!

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CLUB OR SOCIETY? WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY FOR THE Absolute Harmony- The acapella choir. It was the very first society I joined ROLE? A usual day from consists of me when I got to campus and I enjoyed answering emails, attending various every minute of it. college meetings, and planning out the WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SU NIGHT? rest of the year. ACS. Hands down. The music is always IF YOU COULD ONLY ACHIEVE ONE THING on point and the atmosphere is great. BEFORE LEAVING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? It would have be updating our DO YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR constitution, and making sure FRESHERS? Don’t be afraid of meeting new people. everything’s up to date and relevant. Talk to as many people as you can, and WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROYAL HOLLOWAY? try and go to as many events as you Honestly, I ended up at Royal Holloway can during that first week. Everyone entirely by accident; I applied through else is also trying to make friends clearing and got in! But I’m glad I did, during that first week, so you won’t be it’s a great place to be and I don’t alone! regret my decision one bit.

Welfare and Diversity

WHY DID YOU APPLY FOR THIS ROLE? I really enjoyed the work I did as LGBT+ Society President over the last year and I wanted the chance to do this on a bigger and better scale. I had lots of ideas for what I wanted to do in the role, and now that I’ve started, it’s really exciting to see them starting to come together!

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROYAL HOLLOWAY? As an undergraduate I studied English and Creative Writing: there aren’t many courses like this in the UK, and Royal Holloway has one of the best. And Founder’s building, it’s hard not to fall in love with the place once you’ve seen Founder’s up close.

WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY FOR THE ROLE? At the moment, I’m going to lots of meetings and having lots of planning sessions for events I want to run throughout the year, but also working on mandates from students as well, so there’s lots going on. I also work as part of lots of groups that focus on student welfare and how to make the experiences of our students safer and more enjoyable while they’re here.

WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO ON CAMPUS? Tommy’s Kitchen. Great burgers. And jacket potatoes. And it’s in the Students’ Union so it’s a really great place just to sit and eat and chill, and get away from the more academic areas of campus.

IF YOU COULD ONLY ACHIEVE ONE THING BEFORE LEAVING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? One of my manifesto points is to bring regular (monthly) STI, and, especially, HIV testing to campus, not only for students, but also for staff and people from the local community. There’s often such a taboo about getting tested, and I want to try and tackle that, and to make it easier for people to access these services, by bringing them to their doorstep.

DO YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FRESHERS? Get involved in whatever you can. Be that a club or society, running to be a course or hall rep, standing for election as First Year Rep on the SU Executive Committee, or going for a part-time job on campus. Do something you could be awesome at outside of your studies, it’s a great way to meet different people and to build up your self-confidence.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SU NIGHT? Rainbow Rave down at Medicine.

Sports and Development

WHY DID YOU RUN FOR THIS ROLE? Sport has played such a large role in my university experience so far; I wanted to get involved in as bigger way as possible. WHAT DO YOU DO DAY-TO-DAY FOR THE ROLE? Everyday I interact with a different set of clubs, my main job is to work with all 37 of our clubs and make sure they have the resources and help they need to grow and succeed. IF YOU COULD ONLY ACHIEVE ONE THING BEFORE LEAVING, WHAT WOULD IT BE? Making sure we finish higher in the BUCS table than last year. WHY DID YOU CHOOSE ROYAL HOLLOWAY? It is very difficult not to after driving in to the entrance and

being greeted with Founders Building. WHERE IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO GO ON CAMPUS? It’s a close one between Founders, the sports facilities and the VK bar. If I had to choose one, I guess it would be the sports facilities. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CLUB OR SOCIETY? I have no favourites – I love all 37 clubs equally. WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE SU NIGHT? Come In Your Kit. DO YOU HAVE ONE PIECE OF ADVICE FOR FRESHERS? Make sure you head down to the Sport Fayre – engaging with our sports clubs has the potential to be the highlight of your university experience.

RHUBARB TV We are rhubarbTV. It’s an acronym. Royal Holloway’s Unique Broadcasting and Recording Brand. And that is exactly what we do, broadcast and record. We aim to cover an array of events both on and off campus in order for clubs and societies to reach a stronger audience with what it is that they do. Over the past year, we have recorded events for Absolute Harmony, filmed promotional trailers for Drama Society, as well as dabbled in the broadcasting side of things, by live streaming a talk hosted by Orbital Magazine and TedX Royal Holloway. We are hugely proud of what we achieved last year, but there is always room for improvement, and that is what this year is about. Coming off the purchase of industry standard live-streaming equipment and software, we are hoping to really step up with how we approach the production of larger scale events such as concerts and, one day, sports fixtures.

future productions. We have already begun planning for these workshops to focus on mastering our new live-streaming kit as well as the basics of camera work and postproduction. If you have any questions and want to know more about what we do or how you can get involved, you can tweet us @rhubarbTV and we’ll be sure to get back to you. If you have any questions and want to know more about what we do or how you can get involved, you can tweet us @rhubarbTV, visit us on facebook or visit our website rhubarbtv.com. TIM RICHARDS

On top of covering these events, we will also be holding workshops throughout the year in order to teach members all the necessary skills for them to be an important player in
