REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD JOIN SOCIETIES
A CHANCE TO TRY SOMETHING NEW
Have you always wanted to complete a D of E Expedition? Do you sing Carmen in the shower? Joining a society is a fantastic opportunity to try something new. Royal Holloway boasts over 80 societies with everything from Computing to Tolkien, so there is something for everyone to try.
2
MEET NEW PEOPLE
Outside your flat and your course, Socs introduce you to like-minded people from across
Royal Holloway, especially useful if you’re living off campus or commuting. Socials (and all the games that go with them) are the perfect place to make new friends!
3
KEEP A BALANCED LIFE
4
BROADEN YOUR HORIZONS
5
EXPAND YOUR CV
Socs help you to balance your social life and your work. Weekly events, socials and SU events such as Come In Your Socs give you a break from the books and a chance to chill.
Societies often organise lectures or guest speakers to come in. These extra little things can help to boast your grades, how to see problems or discussions, and your approach to your work.
Many of the societies on campus offer opportunities which open doors to life beyond university. These can include internship opportunities, workshops, or courses which can expand your skills like First Aid courses. Similarly, holding a position on a committee gives you skills in teamwork, organisation, and contacting outside parties. Afterall, there’s only so much university can teach you.

Do you feel the pressure having achieved such success at last years societies ball, going into this year? Definitely. We have very big shoes to fill, however we have a lot of new innovative ideas to help push the society in a new and fresh direction, that we hope people will like. We have so many events planned from shows, workshops and theatre trips to charity, community outreach and volunteering projects. Why should freshers join RHUL Shakespeare Society? The society has so much to offer! Whether you’re the bards biggest fan, enjoy the performing arts or wish to partake in a charity project, we really offer something for everyone. The society is slowly becoming one of the largest and most successful on campus and welcomes students who are not just studying performance related courses or those who like Shakespeare. What would you say to those who might be afraid of joining a society at Royal Holloway? All societies at Royal Holloway welcome first year students with open arms. There are so many events planned during the first few weeks of term that we guarantee you will find something that you’ll enjoy, be THEORBITAL.CO.UK
it sports, performances, common interests or cultural societies. The best thing to do is to try and immerse yourself in as much as possible - after all, university is all about taking chances and trying new things.
“
What were your highlights from last year? 2014-15 was an incredible year for RHUL Shakespeare Society. Our biggest highlight came at Societies Ball, when we were awarded Most Improved Society, Best RAG Event, a Crest for former President Fay Breed, and a Freshman of the Year Award for current President, Dan Jones. We grew from a small performance society, with strong academic links to a huge presence on campus; producing 3 incredibly successful productions, raising over £600 for charity and creating new events and opportunities for members.
What can we expect to see from RHUL Shakespeare Society this year? RHUL Shakespeare Society’s 3 aims this year are simple: Bigger Bard, Better Bard, Bolder Bard. We’re hosting 3 shows, and
“
BIGGER BARD, BETTER BARD, BOLDER BARD.
a special performance event in recognition of our 5th Anniversary, which will also bring even more events and opportunities to our members. Our charity Read-a-thon, in which we will read the complete works of Shakespeare 24/7 will also return this February. Our Masquerade Ball will be returning in time for Valentines Day which will provide the perfect opportunity to dress up with your loved one in Founders Dining Hall! We’re also planning an Elizabethan Dance Workshop, ShakesQUEER; a Shakespearian Ru Paul’s Drag Race, radio recordings of Sonnets, projects with local community groups, a charity Shakespearian Sports Day, a ‘Play in a Day’ opportunity! What makes RHUL Shakespeare Society unique from other drama-based societies? We work incredibly hard to try and promote Shakespeare in a way that is accessible and exciting, and ensure that we provide our members with as many opportunities as possible. We exclusively perform the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries, in new and innovative ways.

We speak to Royal Holloway’s most sparkly society to talk about competitions, new members and what to expect this year... WHAT WERE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR?
There are so many, as a society we had such an amazing year! Our society grew substantially in size so as a result, our socials went from being good to absolutely sick! The Socs Ball was amazing because we were all just jiving and sambaing away together on the dance floor – complete takeover! We’re really proud about how although we’re quite a big society now, we still have a family feel across all dance levels, from beginner to intermediate level! Apart from the socials, we had some amazing competition results! In every competition, we reached a minimum of three finals for individual events and the team events. One of our couples placed 1st in the 1st division team match Jive and the 1st team placed 3rd overall – I can’t even tell you how genuinely fab this is when our team
12
is significant smaller than quite a few of the other teams from much larger universities – we’re still getting RoHo on the map in the Dancesport world!
WHY SHOULD FRESHERS JOIN BALLROOM AND LATIN DANCE SOCIETY?
Why shouldn’t they?! To be completely honest, I don’t think I would have survived my degree so far if I didn’t have this society and I know so many others who would happily tell you the same thing. Whether you want to compete or just get a wiggle on a couple of nights a week, Ballroom and Latin is the perfect way to blow off some steam, have a bit of a break from your reading or statistics and meet some amazing people while getting some good old exercise! Not to mention if you go to a party and you get a good old latin beat going on you can do some serious impressing (lads take note).

WHAT WERE YOUR HIGHLIGHTS FROM LAST YEAR?
There are so many, as a society we had such an amazing year!
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO THOSE WHO MIGHT BE AFRAID OF JOINING A SOCIETY OR TRYING SOMETHING NEW?
University is the time to try new things! The next few years are probably going to be the last chance you have to try new things at such a subsidised rate – it’s not all bad being a student. Our professional coach, Accursio Romeo, is currently ranked 6th for Professional Ballroom in the UK and we only charge £3/5, depending on your level, per lesson; this is the best you’re going to THEORBITAL.CO.UK
get anywhere and with such an amazing coach you’d be crazy not to give it a go for a couple of quid! If you do and you don’t like it (although I don’t think that’s possible) then you’re just a small Starbucks down. Alternatively, you can try it and discover a completely new love for something! Whatever you think you might want to try at uni, go and give it a go because I promise you won’t regret it.
WHAT CAN WE EXPECT TO SEE FROM BALADS THIS YEAR?
More victory!! Team Balad are the rising star of the Varsity Circuit and it’s great to see support for our team and our reputation for being a small but excellent team grow! You can also expect to see our annual charity event, Strictly Come Holloway, to be bigger and better than ever! The event is based on BBC’s popular television programme ‘Strictly Come Dancing’. Our campus celebrities battle it out on the dance floor to be crowned

the champions; it’s great fun and each year we’ve raised a great amount of money for charity thanks to our generous audience! It’s always a great night so look out for ticket sales on the SU website and at the SU itself! WHAT MAKES BALADS UNIQUE FROM OTHER PERFORMANCE-BASED SOCIETIES? I think one of the main things that makes us unique is that you can use what we teach you outside of competitions and performances. There are some styles of dance for example that, although require an immense amount of skill and look absolutely beautiful, you can’t really whip out on a dance floor in a club. For example ballet, which is without a doubt a skilful and beautiful style of dance, you can’t really demonstrate outside of competitions or performances cause if you smashed out a pirouette in the middle of Liquid I’m not sure how it would go down. However, if you’re wiggling in Liquid and you’re doing some Latin moves you’ll just look sick. Apart from that, you get to wear some stunning outfits! Girls, we have some
14
gorgeous dresses that will make you sparkle on the floor, I love putting my Ballroom dress on because I feel like an absolute princess! Lads, we have some gorgeous tail suits for you to whizz round in which could make Napoleon Dynamite look dapper as hell. Apart from that, the only thing I can think of is that it will really grow your confidence, I’ve seen this style of dance turn fairly quiet people into J-Lo when they get on the floor – the level of sass that some people bring to a Cha can literally be Beyoncé-Sasha-Fierce standard. It’s fantastic. IF YOU COULD DESCRIBE YOUR SOCIETY IN THREE WORDS WHAT WOULD THEY BE? Because we’re Latin and Ballroom, there really are two sides to our society as they’re such different styles of dance in themselves which is great because it means there’s something for everyone but it means 3 words is a tricky one! I’d have to go for Sass, Class and Pizazz!

Spotlight on... Following their amazing achievements last year we spoke to the President, Tegan Marlowe, of one of Holloway’s fiercest and most formidable societies: Femsoc. Femsoc had a brilliant year last year, what was the greatest moment? Probably when we accidentally started an international campaign - seeing our then president and social sec on an Australian breakfast show was pretty awesome! Do you feel pressure to live up to the great work the society carried out last year? Definitely, but I think we can do it! The committee will be smaller this year but hopefully we can encourage more people to get involved! What can we expect from femsoc this year? Lots! We’ve got a few events set up for freshers week, as well as an online THEORBITAL.CO.UK
FEMSOC photo campaign, monthly craftivism sessions, and possibly a charity single! Why should freshers consider joining your society? Because as well as being able to get involved with a bunch of fun events and great opportunities for helping create a more equal community, we are also a great support network of friends. When I first joined FemSoc everyone was honestly so caring and kind, I knew I could always message someone if I was stressing about something. We always try to be understanding! Is Femsoc just for women? Of course not! Anyone of any gender can join. There are no restrictions on who can and can’t join, it’s for everyone! And we hope to see as many of you as possible next year!

SPOTLIGHT ON... There are so many societies on offer at Royal Holloway from the more mainstream drama societies to more unusual societies such as Tolkein Society. We spoke to their President Anna Milon to find out what it’s all about. What was your best moment from last year? It was great to have a guest speaker, Joel Cornah, a published fantasy author, give a talk on Tolkien being his inspiration and on the perks of MiddleEarth.
Tolkein Society Why should Freshers consider joining your society? Apart from all that, we collaborate with Tolkien societies in other universities and the International Tolk Soc for all sorts of events. We hold several trips each year, including Oxford and Southampton, which both influenced Tolkien’ s writing. How often do you meet up as a society?
What can we look forward to from Tolkein Society this year?
We get together on a weekly basis, but also have special events on top of this!
We are planning to hold an SU night complete with costume competition, photo booth and Middle-Earth inspired prizes.
Finally, if you had to describe your society in three words, what would they be? Riders of RoHo.
