Letter from the Editor Welcome to our penultimate Freshers’ week edition: The Sports Issue. Sports are a massive part of the culture here at Holloway, whether you’re a pro athlete on the STARS programme, a complete gym addict or just enjoy the odd kickabout every now and then, there’s something for everyone here. With a shiny new logo and professional branding, this year the Bears mean business. In this issue you’ll find a few profiles of some of our many clubs searching for new members, but they’re by no means the only clubs on campus , so make sure you head to the Sports Fayre to check out what’s on offer, and try the taster sessions to find out which team’s for you. Don’t fancy playing competitively? There’s always the BeActive programme, flick through this issue to find out more! Sport at Royal Holloway isn’t just about winning (though it’s a pretty huge part of it) but about meeting amazing people, having some outrageous socials, and gaining some impressive skills you can chuck on your CV. So don’t worry about embarrassing yourself, or not being good enough, just get involved!

REASONS WHY YOU SHOULD BECOME A BEAR

1

4

Before university, the idea of meeting so many new people can be quite daunting, but here you quickly learn that when you all share a passion for a sport you will always have a conversation opener.

The pride of representing the university against opposition is hard to beat, no more so than on Bears Day. Bears Day is your opportunity to represent and support Royal Holloway in competitive fixtures against teams from other universities, with campus becoming a sea of green, purple and white.

THE PEOPLE YOU’LL MEET

2

WITH SO MANY CLUBS THERE’S SOMETHING FOR EVERYONE

Whether you’re a keen athlete or looking to try something new, there’s a place for you in one of Royal Holloway’s 37 sports clubs. Whether it’s Table Tennis or Club of the Year 2014-15 winners Swimming Club that takes your fancy, there are many benefits to becoming a bear.

3

A GREAT WAY TO KEEP FIT

5

THE PRIDE OF REPRESENTING ROYAL HOLLOWAY

IMPROVE YOUR EMPLOYABILITY

Royal Holloway’s sports clubs are very proactive in their volunteering and fundraising, and you can get involved in the running of your club by being elected as a member of the committee.

One of the most obvious advantages of joining a sports club, is that it’s a fantastic way to keep fit. Club membership often proves to be cheaper than joining the gym and training as a group is definitely more motivational than fighting off the alcohol of the night before alone.

SPOTLIGHT

Spotlight on...

LACROSSE

8

ORBITAL MAGAZINE: ROYAL HOLLOWAY’S STUDENT MAGAZINE

SPOTLIGHT What were your highlights from last season?

The Men’s team got there hard fought promotion and cup win double, which saw a very tense but enjoyable cup final against Kent 1st which ended 7-6 in sudden death. Another highlight was our amazing and memorable tour to Budapest where we had the opportunity to walk around the beautiful city and eat local delicacies. Our Royal Holloway Women’s entry beat the local Budapest Black berries and our mixed entry beat three UCL mixed entries.

What can we look forward to from lacrosse this year?

More tackles, diverse socials, exciting charity and volunteering opportunities. We have five teams who are committed and focused. We have a social calendar which has a day out to Thorpe park planned, along with several interesting themes. Also we have a Lacrosse charity week planned.

THERE ARE VERY FEW SPORTS LIKE US.

Why should freshers join lacrosse?

We are one of the largest and most competitive clubs on campus. Every year we take in a large amount of freshers who enjoy their competitive sport and meeting new people. If you want to meet a range of people, enjoy exercise and being competitive, Lacrosse are the sports club for you.

What would you say to those who might be afraid of trying lacrosse having never played before? If you never try, you will never know if you will enjoy the sport. We have a very open and welcoming club, most of whom are also only a year or two into the sport. Lacrosse is a passionate and friendly club which are THEORBITAL.CO.UK

focused on developing one another’s skills to make us a fun but also a competitive team to play.

How many teams to you have? Do you have mixed teams?

We have five teams to try and cater for all skill levels and interest in the sport. A Women’s Second team for members to learn the rules of the game whilst competeing and developing their skills to possibly play for the Women’s First team. Our Men’s team is also in South East League One for BUCS and also play in a Saturday league, both to teach and hone members’ skills whilst enjoying the sport. The club also has two mixed teams which both play in LUSL, are competitive and a way to socialise within the club.

What makes lacrosse unique from other clubs?

There are very few sports like us. The sport combines communication, agility, strength, speed, endurance and finesse in varying parts of play. Few sports can brag that they are a team sport which requires their team to pass a ball in the air and catch it in someone else’s stick. We are unique.

How often do you meet/train/play/have socials?

That depends on how much time our members want to invest into the club. We have socials every Wednesday during term time at our local sponsor the Happy Man. We have one Men/ Women training per week, with a BUCS match on Wednesdays. We also have mixed training so all members in the club have a chance to interact with each other on the pitch which play matches in LUSL on Sundays.

If you could describe the lacrosse club in three words what would they be? Passionate, Exciting, Unique.

SPOTLIGHT

SWIMMING CLUB and the Channel Challenge

12

ORBITAL MAGAZINE: ROYAL HOLLOWAY’S STUDENT MAGAZINE

SPOTLIGHT Regarded by many as the “Everest of Swimming”, the English Channel swim is one of the world’s toughest and mentally challenging events, and the RHUL Swim Team conquered it. On June 25th 2015, the RHUL Channel Swim Relay Team made history by being the largest ever relay team to successfully complete the swim, and completed it in the extremely respectable time of 12 hours and 28 minutes. The challenge was in aid of three charities: Surrey Dolphins Swimobility, Help for Heroes, and Centrepoint. The journey began in November 2014 with the successful application of the Alumni Fund, with who this adventure would not have been possible without. The money given to the challenge was used to fund the hire of the boat and pilot which was necessary for safety during the swim and travel back to England. As soon as the team were given the OK from the Alumni Fund, the team fully immersed themselves into the training for the not-sofar-off event. The biggest challenge for the team was not the swimming, but being able to endure the freezing cold water, and after the first training session, it became ominously apparent at how hard this was going to be. During training, swimmers lost the ability to talk, muscles were cramping all over bodies, and crippling hypothermia set in after exiting the water, our bodies were literally giving up. It became clear that not only was this going to be a physical test, but a test of mental strength and team spirit. After the shock start, team members committed by taking cold showers and baths, and with more time and practice, the shivering reduced, the lips were less blue, and the team were starting to look like they could actually do this. Common training grounds included weekly trips to Wraysbury Lake, Brighton Sea, Dover harbour, and various beaches in Kent. Finally, after months of training, the team set off to Dover the weekend before the swim was scheduled. Suddenly it was all very real, a little team from Egham were about to swim the English Channel. In the days leading up to the swim, the team got as much sea training as

THEORBITAL.CO.UK

possible by visiting the local beaches around Dover, significantly upping the calorie intake, and perhaps most importantly supporting each other, in and out of the water. On the Wednesday evening, the team got the call they had all been waiting for. It was official, we were due to swim the channel the following morning, and had to be ready at Folkestone Harbour for 3am. What followed was food prep madness. Kilos of pasta and chocolate bars were being prepped for the much needed energy the next day, and not to mention the scurry for all things thermal and fluffy for the anticipated shivers. After little to no sleep, the team were up at 1:30am to make it to Folkestone. Everything loaded on the boat, there was nothing left to do but swim the Channel. At 4:30am, a very nervous Ryan Hall was the first brave soul to jump into the dark 11’C water, and it was off. The team took part in multiple hour-long rotations wearing only basic swim wear (speedos and costumes) to the destination of Cap Griz Nez on the French coast. Other than actually swimming the channel, other challenges included navigating the busiest shipping lane in the world, with a few cargo ship collision scares, jelly fish, and the extremely strong currents and tides, with the team actually swimming more than the distance of the channel, but 28 miles instead as a result of tides. Aside from the obvious sinking feeling in your stomach before you jump in, and the absolute elation of finishing, what is most memorable is the heart-warming team spirit demonstrated by every single team member. During everyone’s swims, people were at the sides chanting, singing praises, shouting words of encouragements, and despite not being able to hear it in the water, it was so comforting to know it was there. Also not forgetting the cuddle teams with sleeping bags and towels in hand ready to congratulate and warm up. Touching down in France is a feeling that cannot be put into words. Despite how hard it was, and how at times there were

13

SPOTLIGHT

some who were not sure they were up to the challenge, it was worth every cold shower, every cold bath, every freezing lake swim, and the lingering aches and pains after. It was the hardest thing any of us have had to do, but we are so glad we did it. Isaac who led the challenge said, “It’s the greatest achievement that the swimming club has ever done, and for many of the team, this is their own personal greatest accomplishment. It was the most difficult swim any of us have ever done, exhausting us all to moments almost touching failure. However this team was extremely strong and we gave it our all to get there as quickly as we could and broke a record as the largest ever team to cross the English Channel in the process.’ The challenge was not all in vain, and was in aid of three very different, but phenomenal charities: Surrey Dolphins Swimobility helping the disabled population of Surrey swim in a safe and friendly environment,

14

Help for Heroes - helping those who have been wounded in Britain’s conflicts, and Centrepoint - aiding 16-25 year olds who are homeless in the UK. As well as swimming the channel, the team also organised one of the biggest club fundraisers, ‘Under the Sea’, an event on campus with all proceeds going to charity. This event helped the team meet and surpass their £2,000 goal and reach over £3,000, an incredible amount of money for incredible causes. A massive thank you is given to all the colleagues and contacts of the Students Union at Royal Holloway, the CSA, our three charities, the Alumni Fund, and every person who donated to us! Will we ever do it again? Yes, the club plans to rotate around a few large swims every year. Next up: the Gibraltar Strait separating Europe and Africa! ELENA GUTHRIE
