ere at Royal Holloway Students’ Union we have an incredibly diverse range of activities for you to get involved in - there really is something for everyone. We have over 100 societies and three media outlets (Insanity Radio 103.2 FM, Orbital Magazine, and rhubarbTV) on offer, check out the list on the SU website for more information. Throughout my three years as a student at Royal Holloway I met so many people, and made all of my closest friends, through the societies

I was involved in. I then had the amazing privilege of becoming a society president in my second year, a position which I held for two years. Being involved in societies and media through the SU meant that my time at Royal Holloway was spent making amazing memories, meeting inspiring people, and packing my CV with valuable skills.

I decided to run for the position of CP Societies and Media for a number of reasons, but the main one is because I love student opportunities and what students can Pippa Gentry (Societies achieve through them. There and Media) really is no limit to what you

How did you get involved? I’ve been following amateur rocketry for a few years and only recently decided to give it a go myself but I’m totally hooked. There are some really amazing amateur rocketry teams in the UK, if you want to check some out you should take a look at M.A.R.S.’ projects!

space could get together on a regular basis and create awesome rockets, technology and experiments. Can anyone make a rocket? There was nothing like it already so RHRS was born! Sure, you can find tutorials for making water rockets on the internet, they’re good What is your main goal for this year? We’d like to get certification for flying high power rockets. fun and you don’t need any special permissions to launch them. Beyond that, some fairly basic physics knowledge is all you need to get started designing your own. What type of events will Rocketeers be involved in? We’re planning workshops, socials, team hacking sessions (with pizza!), trips to aerospace and space technology companies and attending the National Student Space Conference.

Royal Holloway Student Magazine | ORBITAL

If you could tell students one thing about your society, what would it be? We’re not just about the rockets! We want to use our rockets to perform experiments and gather data too. The society is also a branch of UK Students for the Exploration and Discovery of Space (UKSEDS) and there will be many space themed projects and events during the year. There’s even a rover building competition that we’d like to put a team in for.

7

What would be your advice for any fresher wanting to join a society? Don’t go overboard and sign up to loads of societies, I’d recommend picking one society that you feel strongly about already and one society that’s something totally new. You can always pick up something else later if you have time.

In our society, we aim to make sure that your experience is no longer a minority experience. What are your plans for making your society bigger and better? We plan to collaborate with a range of other liberation societies on campus in the future, creating strong networks and links, which reflect our intersectional philosophy. We would also like to work together with other liberation groups to create safe spaces for men of colour on campus.
