CUBE AND SITING THE CUBE

CREATIVE WORKS BY JARED HOFFPAUIR

The idea is to have a structure that seems heavy on top but actually feels like it is floating above, almost like the branches and leaves of a tree. By extending the glass through the roof structure I am allowing light to penetrate the thickness of the glass and radiate down to the train platform below. This effect could be heightened at night with the use of lighting. DESIGN> AMTRAK station in downtown Springfield, MO STRUCTURAL COMPONENTS> Reinforced glass walls that support roof structure

Today is no different then the day before. Crossing the sidewalk, a majestic glow is illuminated onto the surface of the street nearby: a street more recently worn by the new visitors of this impending concrete jungle. With the cities' imperative history clinging to every surface; men, women, and children walk by ostensibly untouched by its importance. To them, a gathering place for the exhausted pedestrian or an isolated escape in the midst of the newly renovated lofts above.

I hear the distant voices of kids frolicking amidst the waterfalls and reflection pools in the hot summer sun. The reverberation of cars passing, children laughing, and the rhythmic click of a skateboarders four wheels as they hit the cracks along the sidewalk. But overwhelmingly acute from the collection of noises, the chirps of crickets ring through as the sun exits the muted sky. In these shadows, everyone gathers far away from what is probably the focal point of the area: seemingly fearful of their past. While all along, our memories fade as another day passes by.

GALLOWAY VILLAGE PROJECT

The idea behind this concept is to have three seperate buildings with different programs in each. Each piece would be connected to eachother in unconventional ways. There would be ramps, stairs, ropes, nets, and tunnels connecting each building to the next. At the core of these cubes there would be an elevator for vertical circulation. These cubes would glow at night with the use of translucent facades.

During the conflict of the civil war at Wilson’s Creek, the Union and Confederate armies fought for days struggling to gain ground on one another. This struggle led to a Union victory that marked a turning point for the war east of the Mississippi River. This struggle is the very focus of my design. In my design I have two buildings, one representing the North and one representing the South. The South building is constructed of concrete with only windows on the east side so that the auditorium can double as a meeting space. This constricted feel symbolizes the South’s position on slavery and the control that came from this act of cruelty.

WILSON'S CREEK NATIONAL BATTLEFIELD

The rest of this building is covered wholly or partially by earth thus keeping the temperature moderately regulated during the changing seasons. The western portion of the building will house the electronic Battlefield map and temporary exhibits that will offer interesting hands on experience for the visitors of this National Park. This building comes together in a sort of collision with the North building. The inner walls would follow parallel to the outside curved walls thus allowing the visitor to see the two buildings come together. This also symbolizes the result of the civil war when North and South came together as one nation. In the center of these buildings the visitor would find the information center where they could get directions and a site map of the Battlefield tour roads. The North building is open to the sight and to the Battlefield. Its windows open in all directions and give the visitor a sense of openness. The natural light comes in through a clerestory facing North on site and a series of large entry windows facing South. This building is constructed of polished limestone panels. The white color of this limestone (which is found naturally on this site and surrounding properties) would give this building a lighter feel than its concrete counterpart. These buildings would serve as a starting point for visitors to the park. The permanent exhibits would be housed separate from this stand alone building in the current visitor’s center and would be connected by a long corridor that would start the story telling of the events that led up to this great battle here in Missouri. The visitor would then continue in the visitor’s center where they would find the Sweeney collection of civil war artifacts. They could follow the path towards the exit and finish with a walk through the bookstore and gift shop. The groups or single visitors would then have the option to gather outside under the covered patios or head to their cars to drive the Battlefield.
