Looking ahead… In 2009, Orca Book Publishers celebrated twenty-five years of publishing. After a party and a bit of reflection, we now turn our attention to the future. This is a time of great change in the publishing industry, and we are optimistic about the challenges ahead. At Orca Book Publishers we are always looking for novel ways to promote literacy and innovative ways to share the stories we publish. As we head into 2010, we are engaged in several exciting initiatives, including:
Our new series, Rapid Reads, under our new imprint, Raven Books—short, “easy-read” books for adult readers. In our increasingly fast-paced world we believe there is a market for well-written, well-told novels that can be read in one sitting. Raven Books will also appeal to those struggling with literacy challenges. The Rapid Reads series will feature titles from some of Canada’s best authors—great writing, great storytelling in a small package. See pages 54 and 55.
EBooks—In the past year we have been digitizing content and making it available for purchase in a number of venues. While the physical book is more popular than ever, there are a growing number of avenues and opportunities to make digital content available, and we intend to pursue them whenever and wherever we can. In the near future we expect to make eBooks available on our website and to explore other innovative ways of distributing content.
Classroom Collections—We have introduced new display packaging for our bestselling series fiction: Orca Soundings, Orca Currents, Orca Sports and Orca Echoes. The sturdy and attractive displays make these popular series easier than ever to use and organize in the classroom setting. The package also includes a professionally-written resource guide for each series.
In spite of all the changes occurring throughout our industry, there is also much that stays the same. Most importantly, we remain firmly committed to the belief that “good stories well told” is the secret to success. And that reaching readers is a noble calling. Here’s to the next twenty-five years!

Sandy’s encounter with the “Garbage Lady” on the beach leads to a lesson in environmental responsibility.
Sandy’s Incredible Shrinking Footprint Written by Femida Handy and Carole Carpenter Illustrated by Adrianna Steele-Card
March 2010 9781897187692 $15.95 hardcover 8.5 x 8.5 24 pages ages 4-8 Second Story Press
S
andy loves visiting her grandpa’s house by the beach every summer. She and her dog Pepper play in the sand and surf, chasing the seagulls. But on this day her walk on the beach is ruined when she comes across the garbage left over from someone else’s picnic—pop cans, halfeaten hot-dog buns, and even a yellow mustard container. Angry, Sandy can’t understand why anyone would want to dirty her beautiful beach. She and Pepper are startled by the arrival of the “Garbage Lady,” who helps pick up the mess. The Garbage Lady explains to Sandy that everyone has an ecological footprint—the mark they leave on the world—and that it is their responsibility to shrink it. Sandy is impressed and runs home to tell her grandpa. A wonderful introduction to environmental responsibility, the book ends with a list of everyday ways we can all shrink our footprint. Fittingly illustrated with a unique collage technique using recycled materials. Femida Handy is a professor of environmental studies at the University of Pennsylvania. Carole Carpenter is a professor and coordinator of the pioneering Children’s Studies program at York University in Toronto. Adrianna Steele-Card has created her own unique form of collage art using a combination of natural and recycled items, highlighted by paints and fibers. If you look closely, you will find fish made from leaves, clothes made from flower petals, people made out of birch bark, grass made from fiber and a host of other surprising materials. Themes: environment, responsibility, activism

While he waits to be claimed by the father he barely remembers or the mother who left him a good-bye note in his lunchbox, Kevin (aka Knuckles McGraw) tries to communicate with Breezy, learns to get along with his bunkhouse-mate Ice, and discovers that memories can be as deceptive as family secrets. Great bears need a great rainforest to survive.
The Salmon Bears
Giants of the Great Bear Rainforest Ian McAllister and Nicholas Read • Photographs by Ian McAllister April 2010 9781554692057 $18.95 paperback with flaps full-colour photos 7.5 x 9 96 pages ages 8+ Orca
E
xtensively illustrated with Ian McAllister’s magnificent photographs, The Salmon Bears explores the delicate balance that exists between the grizzly, black and spirit bears that inhabit the last great wilderness along the central coast of British Columbia and their natural environment. Key to this relationship are the salmon that are born in the rivers each spring, who then go out to sea as juveniles and return as adults to spawn and die, completing a cycle of life that ensures the survival of not only their own species but also virtually every other plant and animal in the rainforest. In clear language suitable for young readers, the authors describe the day-to-day activities that define the lives of these bears through the four seasons. But this is also very much the story of the Great Bear Rainforest—a vast tract of land that stretches from the northern tip of Vancouver Island to the Alaska border and contains some of the largest stands of old-growth forest left on the West Coast. The Salmon Bears focuses on the interconnectedness of all life in the rainforest and makes a strong case for the importance of protecting this vital ecological resource. Ian McAllister, a founding director of both the Raincoast Conservation Society and Pacific Wild, is an award-winning photographer and filmmaker. He has spent more than twenty years working to preserve the West Coast’s temperate rainforest. Ian lives with his family on an island in the heart of the Great Bear Rainforest. Nicholas Read, a lifelong lover of animals, works as a journalism instructor at Langara College in Vancouver, British Columbia. He has written on animal issues for the Vancouver Sun, The Globe and Mail, the Toronto Sun and other publications.

As she says her goodbyes, Theresa’s friend Martin gives her two gifts: a package of postcards and a stone he calls the gnome’s eye, which he says will “protect her from all things evil, living or dead.” Theresa is convinced the stone has no power, but she still keeps it close as they travel on the crowded immigrant ship and when they settle into a rooming house on Kensington Avenue in Toronto. At first Theresa is afraid of everything: the other tenants in the rooming house, the rat that lives in the kitchen, learning a new language. When his board is stolen, he discovers that his cousin, Kevin, knows more than he should about recent thefts at the resort. Kevin’s in way over his head, and soon Ryan’s involved, whether he wants to be or not. As Ryan prepares for the video shoot that could be his big break, he learns that Kevin’s in danger. A
fter losing yet another tae kwon do tournament, Jinho gives in to his anger and breaks his opponent’s fingers. While this gets him barred from competing at his dojang, it also gets him scouted by Austin, a trainer for an underground mixed martial arts club. At first the prospect of fighting without boundaries appeals to Jinho, but the more involved he gets, the more disturbing he finds it and the harder it is to find a way out. Unlike legal MMA, which has rules and regulations, underground MMA is a free-for-all: there are no weight classes and no referees to stop the fight should it go too far. When Jinho is set up to fight a boy known as The Ripper, he realizes that he doesn’t belong in this world, but the only thing that can save him is the ancient code of tae kwon do. Counting on Hope Sylvia Olsen
March 2010 9781550391732 $14.95 paperback 6x9 304 pages ages 12+ Sono Nis
Award-winning writer Sylvia Olsen’s sensitively drawn depiction of innocence lost and wisdom hard won, Counting on Hope tells the story of an English girl named Hope and a Lamalcha girl named Letia, whose lives are profoundly changed when their two cultures collide. The action is set against the backdrop of the confusing events surrounding the English colonization of British Columbia and an 1863 naval assault on Kuper Island. Alternating between free verse and prose, Counting on Hope follows the girls’ individual story lines before, during and after their meeting. The novel captures the wonder and joy with which Hope and Letia develop their friendship and describes the tragic events, suspicion, fear and confusion that characterize so many early encounters between Europeans and the First Peoples. Ultimately a story of hope, the novel follows the two girls out of childhood, off their island paradise and into the complex realities of an adult world.
Sylvia Olsen married into the Tsartlip First Nation when she was 17, and for more than 30 years she has lived and worked and raised her four children in the Tsartlip community. She returned to school at age 35 and earned a master’s degree in history, specializing in Native/white relations in Canada. As a writer, she often finds herself exploring the in-between place where Native and non-Native people meet. Themes: friendship, First Nations

n Book Four of the popular Warlocks of Talverdin series, the struggle passes on to the next generation. Betrayed by a member of his own family, abducted, poisoned and forced to recreate an ancient spell that might—if it doesn’t kill him—open the lost shadow road, Nethin, son of a Nightwalker lord and a human witch, is thrown into a struggle for survival in a dying land. In that land, he meets Alabeth, an orphan who is willing to trust him, but her people have rejected her. Capture means execution for both, but an even deadlier foe plans vengeance against Nethin, and the life of every Nightwalker rests on what Nethin does next. “If one book has shaped what I think a book should do and what literature should be,” K.V. Johansen says, “it is Lord of the Rings.” As Tolkien was, she is thorough in her research as she creates other worlds for her stories. Johansen, who has a master’s degree in medieval studies, lives in a bit of another world herself; she grows exotic trees indoors and seedling oaks and apples outdoors in what used to be the vegetable garden, and hopes some day to have her very own forest, because both the house and the yard are getting rather crowded. She lives in Sackville, New Brunswick.

Love You to Death Gail Bowen
Someone is killing some of Charlie D’s favorite listeners.
C
harlie D is the host of a successful late-night radio call-in show. His listeners have a particularly intimate relationship with him and often reveal much about themselves, confident that he will honor their trust and that he can save them. In their minds, he is perfect: one of life’s winners. But Charlie feels he’s something of a fake. His easy confidence on-air belies the reality for a man born with a wine-colored birthmark that covers half his face. Love You to Death covers one hour on “The World According to Charlie D”—an hour during which he must both discover the long-time listener who is killing the people who trust him and attempt to come to terms with the man behind the birthmark. What if Your Mom Made Raisin Buns?
Nana’s Quilt
A little boy has too much fun with his mom’s raisin buns. He starts taking raisins out of buns, sticking raisins to the walls, drawing arms and legs around the raisins on the walls to make raisin bugs. He removes the raisins from the wall while Gert and Harold, two real bugs, try to keep their distance but end up getting mixed into the mess.
Allie and her grandmother spend a summer exploring the city of St. John’s. They visit six tourist attractions that make the city unique, and begin to make a quilt that illustrates each place. By summer’s end, Allie appreciates the beauty and history of her city. The completed quilt is a lasting memory of her time with Nana.

A Puppy Story
More than anything else, Sebastian wants to see the whales. One night he hides away on a whaling ship headed for the New World. In a summer full of adventure and selfdiscovery, Sebastian realizes there’s more to hunting whales than he’d imagined.
Laura-Lou promises her mom and dad that her puppy will have perfect manners. Puppy has other ideas—like snacking on the houseplants and jumping out of the tub and sliding down the hall. Laura Lou knows that it’s up to her to teach him to be the very best puppy he can be.

Praise for Orca Book Publishers “The goal of [Orca books] is to encourage frustrated middlers and teens to read, and from my perspective, it is working. Teachers love the books as well, but the students will prove their value through a rapidly growing number of circulations...Any librarian who sees the light in a student’s eye when she says she read her Orca book in one day cannot resist immediately calling his or her favorite vendor and making sure that, in September, there are plenty of Orca books on the shelf. —Bruce Duboff, librarian in Pennsauken, NJ, on the Middler Books and More blog
