Buttercup’s Lovely Day

Spring 2009

n poetry that winds and wends like a creek through a farmer’s field, we journey through one lovely day in Buttercup’s life. Whether she is ruminating on the mud beneath her feet or the moon and the stars in the blue-black sky, she draws us deep into her rich and wonderful world.

Carolyn Beck spent her summers in fields and meadows. She spends as much time as she can at her cottage in the Muskokas. This is the second book she has worked on with her sister, Andrea. Carolyn lives in Toronto, Ontario. Andrea Beck, creator of the “Elliot Moose” series, loves animals. She had a beagle named Toby whose black spots reminded her of cow patches. She wishes all cows lived Buttercup’s life. Andrea lives in Unionville, Ontario. She created this book using acrylic paint on watercolor paper.

“The iambic rhythm makes the selections easy to read and recite aloud, and the poems would be wonderful additions to storytimes about cows, farms or even during Valentine’s Day programs. Buttercup provides the answers to life’s eternal questions—she loves the simple things and shares this joy with readers.” —School Library Journal

omething sinister happened to Mackenzie’s twin sister Breanne the last time the two girls were in Ireland. Now they’re back and the winter solstice is approaching. Breanne scoffs at their elderly relatives’ tales of fair folk and banshees and the thin barrier between two worlds, but Mackenzie remembers what happened to Breanne five years before—at the summer solstice. Mackenzie is convinced the Otherworld is real, but is it a place of enchantment or enslavement for humans?

Rachel Dunstan Muller is the author of two previous children’s novels: When the Curtain Rises and Ten Thumb Sam. The Solstice Cup was conceived while Rachel was living on the northeastern shore of County Antrim, Northern Ireland. She currently lives on the edge of a small Vancouver Island community with her husband and five children.

ake one prankster, put her together with the editor of the world’s most boring school newspaper, add one over-worked principal, and you’ve got a recipe for the most chaotic few weeks in the history of Upland Green Elementary. The unlikely duo of Martin Wettmore, editor and expert grammarian, and Trixi Wilder, prankster extraordinaire, is given the task of improving the pathetic sales of their school newspaper. Martin and Trixi clash over everything from journalistic integrity (Trixi has none) to imagination (Martin has none). But when the paper starts to wreak havoc at the school, Principal Baumgartner shuts it down and assigns Trixi to Saturday morning bus-washing duty. To redeem themselves, Martin and Trixi resolve to create one very special edition of the Upland Green Examiner. Chris McMahen is an elementary school teacher-librarian who has had a lifelong fascination with tabloid newspapers. He teaches media literacy to elementary students as part of their Language Arts program, and on occasion he uses tabloids for inspiration (and a good jolt of laughter). Chris lives near Armstrong, British Columbia.

“Photocopier malfunctions are not newsworthy,” Martin said. “Not newsworthy?” Trixi said. “Listen to me, Marty. This week at our school, you had the best stories any newspaper editor could hope for. Just think of the headlines you could have had! Photocopier Goes Wild! This Week Origami! Next Week, Paper Airplanes?” “That’s ridiculous,” Martin said. “Or how about Toilets Reciting Poetry at Upland Green School! What Will They Do Next? Sing Opera? Tap Dance?” “That’s even more ridiculous. In my newspaper, I just report the facts,” Martin said.

ealworms are small creatures that live in dark secret places. Jeremy is a bit like that when he leaves his home in rural Nova Scotia and moves to Toronto with his mother. Lots of things keep him from enjoying his new life, but the worst is his science partner, Aaron, who is more annoying than sand in a bathing suit. Jeremy is also burdened by the secret he carries about the motorcycle accident that injured him and killed his father. Although Jeremy is haunted by his past, he starts to feel at home in Toronto when he realizes he has some skills he can share with his classmates. And when his mealworm project yields some surprising results, Jeremy is finally able to talk about his part in the fatal accident. Anna Kerz loves stories that touch the heart and tickle the funny bone. Now that she’s retired from teaching, she fills her time by working as a storyteller, telling tales to audiences of all ages, and by writing books for children. She lives in Scarborough, Ontario.

“What’re we gonna investigate?” Aaron said. “You might want to investigate the art of listening,” Mr. Collins said. “The rest of the class will study mealworms.” There were snickers. If Aaron heard, he didn’t seem to care; he kept moving. His legs jiggled. He tapped his pencil on his desk. He hummed. His head bopped from side to side as if he was hearing music. Weird kid, Jeremy thought.

New Teen Fantasy

An invasion, a hostage-taking, an age-old secret... “It was a nightmare,” Robin said. “A—a vision, Your Highness. There was a man drowning in clouds...when I touched him, I saw things, things he’d seen, things he knew.” “What things?” I asked. Robin took a deep breath. “They've taken the baroness.” “Who? Where?” “Enemies,” she said simply. “He didn't know where. There was a dead woman...”

aurey, the half human, half Nightwalker Warden of Greyrock, and Annot, the dauntless Baroness of Oakhold, have settled down in Greyrock Castle, but those who still hate and fear the Nightwalkers threaten to destroy all they’ve worked for. While Maurey hunts for two outlaws who may guard an ancient secret, his liegeman Korby begins to uncover the truth about the cult of the Yehillon. Their enemies are always one step ahead of them though. Captured by the Yehillon and held as a hostage against Maurey, Annot struggles to survive and escape. A terrible choice lies before Maurey. If he abandons his defence of the border to save Annot, all Talverdin may fall as the Yehillon, led by their veiled prince, finally carry out a long-laid plan to wipe the warlocks from the face of the earth. “If one book has shaped what I think a book should do and what literature should be,” K.V. Johansen says, “it is Lord of the Rings.” As Tolkien was, she is thorough in her research as she creates other worlds for her stories. Readers will find themselves richly rewarded. Johansen, who has a master’s degree in Medieval Studies, lives in a bit of another world herself; she grows exotic trees indoors and seedling oaks and apples outdoors in what used to be the vegetable garden and hopes some day to have her very own forest, because both the house and the yard are getting rather crowded. K.V. Johansen lives in Sackville, New Brunswick.
