Overview
The Republic of the Maldives — an archipelago comprised of over 1,200 islands branched into 20 naturally forming atolls — is situated in the Indian Ocean. It lies southwest of India and Sri Lanka and the capital city of Maldives is Male’ located in Kaafu Atoll.
The main growth sector of the Maldives economy is the tourism industry whereas agriculture and fisheries industries are secondary contributors. Public policy initiatives set by the government and current legislation encourage foreign actors to invest particularly in the tourism industry and infrastructure projects.
